- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, friends from across the nation and around the world.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Martin, and you are listening to Dad's Bedtime Stories.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And tonight, I am broadcasting from a different place. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 1: not in the normal Dad's Bedtime Studios. Instead, I'm at
- 0:27Speaker 1: a conference in Toronto. As a result, I feel like
- 0:32Speaker 1: there's some extra background noise here because this place just
- 0:34Speaker 1: has a sort of hum to it. Hopefully I'll be
- 0:38Speaker 1: able to edit most of that out and the story
- 0:41Speaker 1: quality will be okay. But if you notice something different,
- 0:45Speaker 1: that's probably why. But now, as promised, we'll be heading
- 0:50Speaker 1: back into the Magic Costume Tree universe for our last
- 0:55Speaker 1: episode before Halloween. Let's check it out.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Hello, my name is Harriet and I'm from Charlottesville, Virginia.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I would like to suggest a magic costume tree episode
- 1:10Speaker 2: where you dress up as a dog and you can
- 1:13Speaker 2: understand all the dogs. And if not, you dress up
- 1:16Speaker 2: as a cat and you meet a stray cat called Rex,
- 1:21Speaker 2: who you find out is trying to stop a witch
- 1:24Speaker 2: that is trying to make everybody eat candy that will make.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Them Thank you to Harriet for that wonderful suggestion. Before
- 1:42Speaker 1: we get started, though, I do want to give a
- 1:45Speaker 1: few shout-outs to some of my newest Patreon sponsors. First
- 1:49Speaker 1: of all, thank you to David from Oregon. Thanks, David.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Really appreciate you being a sponsor. Next up, thank you
- 2:03Speaker 1: to the Smith fam, Zeke and Malachi. I really appreciate
- 2:09Speaker 1: the support, everyone in the, uh, in the Smith fam.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And last, thank you to Yvonne and Ira from Washington,
- 2:21Speaker 1: who apparently listen to my stories almost every night. And, uh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yvonne is turning six on November 8th, so happy birthday
- 2:34Speaker 1: pretty soon to you. If you like the podcast, there's
- 2:39Speaker 1: lots of ways to support it. You can join us
- 2:42Speaker 1: on Patreon, where you get ad-free episodes and that wonderful
- 2:47Speaker 1: feeling that you're supporting the podcast, as well as some
- 2:50Speaker 1: bonus content. I've also kept my dad's BedtimeStories.com website up
- 2:57Speaker 1: to date with all of the latest things you can purchase,
- 3:01Speaker 1: including the Cards of Power card game. Mine actually just arrived,
- 3:07Speaker 1: so maybe I'll have to do an unveiling of that somehow.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Maybe on YouTube. Beyond that, there are a whole bunch
- 3:14Speaker 1: of books, including some of our latest graphic novels, a
- 3:18Speaker 1: story by me, illustrations by... Our future robot overlords. Which
- 3:26Speaker 1: I say sort of as a joke, and also to
- 3:28Speaker 1: make sure you know that the pictures were done by
- 3:30Speaker 1: artificial intelligence, because I cannot draw. My favorite part is
- 3:34Speaker 1: making stories. So, uh, I outsourced the rest. Either way,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I think it turned out pretty well. Aside from those options,
- 3:45Speaker 1: just listening, as I always say, is the most important thing.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So keep on listening... And, you know, putting up with
- 3:54Speaker 1: ads like this one. Now it's time to get as
- 3:59Speaker 1: comfy as you can in that bed, close your eyes,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and imagine yourself doing what the kid in the story does. Oh,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and if you hear sirens in the background, it's probably
- 4:15Speaker 1: not you. It's me. They just keep happening here. Imagine
- 4:22Speaker 1: yourself waking up in your, you know, normal bed. You
- 4:28Speaker 1: get up, get dressed, have some breakfast, and then you
- 4:34Speaker 1: head outside. And that's when you start to notice some
- 4:39Speaker 1: strange things. First, you notice a boy who just sort
- 4:46Speaker 1: of stops laughing halfway through a joke. One moment he's
- 4:52Speaker 1: standing there beside two other children, holding a purple candy
- 4:57Speaker 1: of some kind. And the next, his smile just disappears.
- 5:04Speaker 1: His arms drop to his side. He turns and walks away.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Where are you going? His friend asks, but he doesn't answer.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Then she eats a piece of the same purple candy.
- 5:20Speaker 1: and her face goes blank too. More candy must be made,
- 5:29Speaker 1: she says. She follows him down the pavement. The third
- 5:35Speaker 1: child looks at the sweets in his hand. You open
- 5:39Speaker 1: your mouth to warn him that maybe it's not such
- 5:43Speaker 1: a good idea to eat that, but it's too late.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He chews, swallows. and also straightens. More candy must be made.
- 5:58Speaker 1: He drops an unfinished chocolate bar and walks after the others.
- 6:04Speaker 1: You stare. Dropping perfectly good chocolate seems particularly worrying. You
- 6:12Speaker 1: follow the three of them around the corner and nearly
- 6:16Speaker 1: walk into a tree. Not a little roadside tree. An
- 6:21Speaker 1: enormous ancient tree with twisting branches, thick roots, and a
- 6:28Speaker 1: small wooden door. You look behind you to see that
- 6:33Speaker 1: the street is completely gone. Forest stretches in every direction.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The magic costume tree. You hurry to the door and
- 6:46Speaker 1: pull it open. Inside, costumes hang along carved wooden racks.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You pass feathers, glittering scales, silver helmets, and something with
- 7:00Speaker 1: far too many elbows for some reason. A beam of
- 7:05Speaker 1: light shines into a cat costume. It has soft gray fur,
- 7:12Speaker 1: pointed ears, little paws, and a long tail. There's a
- 7:18Speaker 1: dog costume beside it, but for some reason the cat
- 7:23Speaker 1: costume is highlighted. A cat, you ask? You want me
- 7:29Speaker 1: to dress up as a cat? What possible problem could
- 7:34Speaker 1: a cat help with? Well, hopefully cats are good at
- 7:40Speaker 1: whatever problem's going on. You quickly put on the suit.
- 7:46Speaker 1: It settles around your body immediately, adjusting until it fits perfectly.
- 7:52Speaker 1: A tingling feeling travels through your fingers. Your ears twitch.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Something scratches against the floor behind you. You turn quickly.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Your tail. You turn again, trying to see it properly.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And it follows you. It's... Not a costume tail, it
- 8:14Speaker 1: actually feels connected. You can wiggle it around and stuff.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You head outside the magic costume tree, feeling rather nimble
- 8:27Speaker 1: compared to how you felt before you put on the costume.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You crouch and jump. You spring much higher than you'd
- 8:37Speaker 1: normally expect and land on a low branch of the tree.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Your feet settle neatly beneath you, no wobbling or grabbing
- 8:49Speaker 1: wildly for balance. You look toward the next branch, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: your body seems to know exactly how to reach it.
- 8:59Speaker 1: You leap from branch to branch, again and again, until
- 9:04Speaker 1: you're looking down from halfway up the tree. Climbing suddenly
- 9:10Speaker 1: feels as easy as walking up stairs, and somehow you're
- 9:15Speaker 1: just confident you're going to hit the next branch. You
- 9:20Speaker 1: swing down and drop toward a lower branch, twist into
- 9:25Speaker 1: a backflip, and land lightly on your feet. Nice, you say.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Then you start to get another feeling. a strange tingling
- 9:39Speaker 1: one rising inside you. You let the magic work, and
- 9:45Speaker 1: your body starts to shrink. Your back bends, your hands
- 9:51Speaker 1: become paws, and the ground draws closer until you're standing
- 9:57Speaker 1: on four small feet. a gray cat. You've turned into
- 10:04Speaker 1: an actual cat. Walking feels different at first, but you
- 10:11Speaker 1: begin taking steps, one and then another. Your tail lifts
- 10:16Speaker 1: naturally behind you, and you trot down the forest path,
- 10:22Speaker 1: away from the costume tree, listening to birds moving through
- 10:27Speaker 1: branches above. Before long, the trees open into a familiar street.
- 10:35Speaker 1: The children are still walking in that strange zombie-like state,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and several more have joined them. On a nearby wall,
- 10:48Speaker 1: three cats watch the walking children. I don't like it,
- 10:55Speaker 1: says a black and white cat. Neither do I, says
- 11:00Speaker 1: an orange one. They aren't even stopping to admire us. Nah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I don't think that's really the problem, says the third.
- 11:10Speaker 1: He's a scruffy brown tabby cat with one bent ear.
- 11:16Speaker 1: You jump onto the wall beside them. What's the problem?
- 11:20Speaker 1: You ask. All three turn toward you. You freeze. You've
- 11:27Speaker 1: just spoken to cats, and somehow you understand their answers.
- 11:34Speaker 1: You open your mouth again, wondering if it's really working. Hello?
- 11:42Speaker 1: To your ears, it sounds like you've spoken a word.
- 11:45Speaker 1: the word hello but to a passing woman apparently it's
- 11:50Speaker 1: a meow hello kitty she says and she keeps on
- 11:56Speaker 1: walking you glance down at your paws useful costume if
- 12:02Speaker 1: you well want to talk to cats the scruffy tabby
- 12:07Speaker 1: cat studies you uh i'm rex do you know what's
- 12:13Speaker 1: happening here you ask His whiskers twitch. Yes, and we
- 12:21Speaker 1: need to stop it. He jumps down. You follow him.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I used to be human, he says quietly. Although you're
- 12:32Speaker 1: probably not going to believe that. None of the other
- 12:36Speaker 1: cats do. You used to be human? Years ago. Ugh.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I ate some candy close to Halloween that somebody left
- 12:50Speaker 1: outside a shop. My parents always told me not to
- 12:54Speaker 1: take candy from strangers, but it was purple and it
- 12:58Speaker 1: looked really delicious. Next thing I knew, I was walking
- 13:04Speaker 1: toward a strange house in the woods. Ahead, the children
- 13:10Speaker 1: turn onto a narrow trail. It was a candy house,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Rex continues. And inside it, if you can believe this,
- 13:21Speaker 1: was a witch. She made us work for her. Cooking, cleaning,
- 13:28Speaker 1: making more sweets. What happened? Well, she got upset with
- 13:36Speaker 1: me when I broke something once and decided to test
- 13:40Speaker 1: a spell on me. Eh. This was kind of the result.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You look at the cat's bent ear. Rex notices. That
- 13:52Speaker 1: part happened later. Argument with an alley cat. They're not nice.
- 14:00Speaker 1: He leads you beneath a fence. After she turned me
- 14:04Speaker 1: into a cat, I squeezed through a gap and escaped.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Something about the transformation broke the spell she had over me.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But I couldn't leave the others forever. I've been watching
- 14:20Speaker 1: carefully ever since, trying to find a way to help.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And unfortunately, it looks like she's up to her old tricks.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So you haven't really been successful in helping yet? Well... NO.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I KNOW WHERE SHE KEEPS THE ANTIDOTE, I JUST CAN'T
- 14:43Speaker 1: GET IT WHILE SHE HAS HER WAND. AS SOON AS
- 14:46Speaker 1: SHE SEES ME COMING, SHE'LL TURN ME INTO A NEWT
- 14:50Speaker 1: OR SOMETHING. YOU LOOK TOWARDS THE CHILDREN DISAPPEARING AMONG THE TREES.
- 14:57Speaker 1: THEN MAYBE WE SHOULD GET HER WAND AND SAVE THESE CHILDREN.
- 15:03Speaker 1: REX LIFTS HIS EARS. for a cat I met about
- 15:08Speaker 1: a minute ago. I think I like you. Deep in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the woods, you eventually find a cottage in a clearing.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Its walls look like they're made of gingerbread. Its windows
- 15:24Speaker 1: are made of clear sugar. Thick icing runs along the roof,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and striped candy sticks frame the doorway. It smells wonderful,
- 15:36Speaker 1: but Looks exactly like the kind of house that fairy
- 15:40Speaker 1: tales told you to stay clear of. Through an open window,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you see the children filing inside. A witch stands beside
- 15:52Speaker 1: an enormous cauldron, stirring a purple mixture of some kind
- 15:57Speaker 1: with a big wooden spoon. She's wearing a pointy hat
- 16:02Speaker 1: that droops over one eye and makes her look Well,
- 16:06Speaker 1: exactly how you'd imagine a witch to look. Aprons on,
- 16:13Speaker 1: she says. I need the floors scrubbed, wrappers folded, and
- 16:20Speaker 1: somebody better polish that licorice over there. The children just
- 16:26Speaker 1: silently obey. The witch points at two newcomers. You two, welcome.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You can help with tomorrow's experiments. Beside you, Rex's claws
- 16:42Speaker 1: press into the earth. Not this time, he whispers. He
- 16:49Speaker 1: nods toward a high shelf. A glass jar sits above
- 16:53Speaker 1: the cupboards, filled with little golden fish-shaped sweets. Its label reads...
- 17:01Speaker 1: Not for children or anyone else. That's the antidote, Rex says.
- 17:09Speaker 1: She keeps it for, uh, well, mistakes. Or in case
- 17:14Speaker 1: the candy gets on her. Does she make many? Rex
- 17:19Speaker 1: looks at himself. Some. The witch sets her wand on
- 17:25Speaker 1: the table and turns toward the cupboard. You crouch. Alright,
- 17:32Speaker 1: I'll get the wand, and I'll get the fish. You
- 17:37Speaker 1: slip through the window. Your paws land without a sound.
- 17:42Speaker 1: You dart beneath a chair, climb a hanging tablecloth, and
- 17:47Speaker 1: creep across the tabletop. The wand lies beside a stack
- 17:52Speaker 1: of purple candy wrappers. You close your teeth around it.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Behind you, A cupboard door bangs. What are you doing here?
- 18:06Speaker 1: You turn and the witch stares at you. Then at
- 18:11Speaker 1: the wand in your mouth. Oh, no, you don't. You jump.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Her fingers close on empty air. You land on a
- 18:22Speaker 1: chair and spring up onto a shelf. Hey, come back here,
- 18:28Speaker 1: she yells as she charges at you. You race past
- 18:32Speaker 1: jars of sprinkles, duck beneath a cupboard, and the witch
- 18:37Speaker 1: drops to her knees. Here, kitty, kitty. You stare at
- 18:42Speaker 1: her from the shadows. She stretches a hand toward you.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Nice kitty. You draw your claws, scratch her on the hand. Ouch!
- 18:55Speaker 1: Horrible kitty, she says as you slip out through the
- 19:00Speaker 1: other side. You leap onto the kitchen counter. Behind her,
- 19:06Speaker 1: you see Rex climbing up a curtain. You knock a
- 19:10Speaker 1: wooden spoon onto the floor. The witch whirls toward the noise.
- 19:16Speaker 1: You hop onto a hanging pot. It swings. Another pot
- 19:22Speaker 1: clangs against it. You spring away just as she reaches up.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Her hat catches on a hook. For a moment, she
- 19:32Speaker 1: keeps running without it, but then she realizes it fell off, stops,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and snatches it back. You are going to be turned
- 19:42Speaker 1: into a tea cozy when I catch you. Above the cupboards,
- 19:48Speaker 1: Rex reaches the antidote. He pushes the jar carefully onto
- 19:53Speaker 1: a folded apron, then noses off its loose lid. Golden
- 19:59Speaker 1: sweets spill onto the fabric. Good. Now you just have
- 20:05Speaker 1: to stop the witch so you can, well, use it.
- 20:10Speaker 1: You race toward the cauldron. A purple mixture fills it
- 20:15Speaker 1: almost to the rim. The candy is thick and glossy,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but it doesn't have any steam rising from it. And
- 20:25Speaker 1: that's when you get an idea. Maybe it's time to
- 20:30Speaker 1: give the witch a taste of her own candy. You
- 20:36Speaker 1: jump onto a stool beside the rim. The witch rushes
- 20:40Speaker 1: toward you. Got you, she says, but at the last second,
- 20:46Speaker 1: you leap sideways, instantly transforming back into a, well, sort
- 20:53Speaker 1: of human cat, leaving your foot stretched out, perfectly in
- 21:00Speaker 1: the position to trip the witch. The witch hits your foot, stumbles...
- 21:07Speaker 1: spinning her arms in the air like a windmill, and then,
- 21:12Speaker 1: with a splash, she falls straight over the edge of
- 21:16Speaker 1: the cauldron. For a moment, two boots are all that
- 21:22Speaker 1: sticks out of the thing. The rest of her body
- 21:25Speaker 1: is buried in the purple liquid. Soon, she grabs the
- 21:31Speaker 1: rim and hauls herself upright, dripping with all sorts of syrup.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You land on the table and set down the wand.
- 21:41Speaker 1: The witch opens her mouth, and her expression goes completely blank.
- 21:50Speaker 1: What would you like me to do? She asks. You
- 21:56Speaker 1: look over at Rex, and Rex looks at you. Well,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I guess that worked. Wasn't exactly my plan, but It worked.
- 22:09Speaker 1: You pick up the wand with your hand. Climb out carefully,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you tell the witch, and she obeys. Now I want
- 22:21Speaker 1: you to make enough antidote to free everyone who's ever
- 22:26Speaker 1: eaten your candy. She reaches for a clean mixing bowl,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and no more spells on anyone, you say. Yes, she
- 22:39Speaker 1: says flatly. No more spells. Rex nudges the apron towards you.
- 22:48Speaker 1: You carry the golden sweets to the nearest children. Here,
- 22:53Speaker 1: eat these, you say. And the children just seem to
- 22:58Speaker 1: sort of listen. Perhaps without the witch giving orders, they
- 23:03Speaker 1: need someone else to take the orders from. They quickly
- 23:08Speaker 1: down the candy and then, well, they look stunned. Why
- 23:15Speaker 1: am I holding a mop? one of them says, or asks. Eh,
- 23:22Speaker 1: long story, you respond. Last thing I remember, I was
- 23:28Speaker 1: just outside a candy shop. Before long, the kitchen fills
- 23:34Speaker 1: with confused voices. confused voices that are no longer under
- 23:40Speaker 1: the witch's control. You do your best to explain exactly
- 23:44Speaker 1: what happened while passing out the antidote. Here, take these
- 23:50Speaker 1: and give them to any child who, well, who looks
- 23:55Speaker 1: like they're under the control of magical candy. It might
- 23:59Speaker 1: not sound obvious, but when you see it, it's honestly
- 24:03Speaker 1: pretty obvious. Before long, everyone is fully awake. Everyone except
- 24:10Speaker 1: the witch, of course, who is busily making golden fish
- 24:14Speaker 1: candy once again. You look down at Rex. You know,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I think there's still one more thing we need to fix.
- 24:24Speaker 1: His tail becomes very still. You turn to the witch.
- 24:31Speaker 1: You will undo every transformation you put on Rex, you say.
- 24:38Speaker 1: She looks toward the wand. I require the wand. You're
- 24:46Speaker 1: not sure that's a good idea. On second thought, just
- 24:52Speaker 1: tell me how to do it. So the witch explains.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It's not really any particular series of words. It's more
- 25:05Speaker 1: the feeling, the thought inside your head that matters. You
- 25:12Speaker 1: must imagine the result as clearly as you can. Point
- 25:18Speaker 1: the wand, flick it, and allow the energy from your
- 25:23Speaker 1: own body to power it. You try to do just that.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You point the wand down at Rex. You focus on
- 25:35Speaker 1: the cat turning back into, well, a normal kid. And
- 25:41Speaker 1: you feel a strange tugging sensation coming from the wand.
- 25:47Speaker 1: You allow the energy from your body to pass into
- 25:50Speaker 1: the thing. You flick it, and a blast of orange
- 25:55Speaker 1: light shoots out. hitting the little scruffy cat. Immediately, a
- 26:02Speaker 1: warm golden shimmer surrounds him. His paws lengthen, his ears shrink,
- 26:09Speaker 1: his scruffy fur starts to disappear underneath ordinary clothes. And
- 26:17Speaker 1: a moment later, a young man about your age sits
- 26:21Speaker 1: on the kitchen floor. He looks at his hands. turns
- 26:26Speaker 1: them over, wiggles his finger, and laughs. Thumbs, he says.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I have thumbs. He grips the edge of the table.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I missed thumbs. Thumbs are the best. Thank you, he says.
- 26:49Speaker 1: You simply smile back at him. You did the difficult part,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you say. Not really. You're the one who tripped the
- 26:59Speaker 1: witch and put her under your command. Good point, but
- 27:06Speaker 1: I wouldn't have known to do it if I hadn't
- 27:08Speaker 1: met you. The witch soon finishes the antidote. You pack
- 27:15Speaker 1: it into bags and take it with you in case
- 27:17Speaker 1: you run into any more controlled children walking around in
- 27:23Speaker 1: zombie-like states. All right. Next, you must destroy the enchanted candy,
- 27:32Speaker 1: all of your recipes, and any spare magic things or
- 27:37Speaker 1: wands you can find. Finally, you break the wand in
- 27:42Speaker 1: your hand, and the witch starts making her way all
- 27:47Speaker 1: through the house and gathering things, throwing them into her
- 27:53Speaker 1: little fireplace one by one. REX OPENS THE DOOR COME
- 28:03Speaker 1: ON LET'S GET YOU HOME OUTSIDE HE PAUSES ARE YOU
- 28:11Speaker 1: COMING IN A BIT I HAVE SOMETHING TO RETURN FIRST
- 28:17Speaker 1: YOU SAY REX ONLY SMILES THEN HE LEADS THE CHILDREN
- 28:24Speaker 1: OUTSIDE AND HEADS HOME HIMSELF You're not sure how long
- 28:30Speaker 1: he's been away for. His parents may have quite the
- 28:34Speaker 1: surprise coming. You soon head outside the witch's cottage, and
- 28:41Speaker 1: a strange tugging sensation appears on your costume. It lifts
- 28:47Speaker 1: you up into the air, and soon you find yourself
- 28:52Speaker 1: floating out over top of a forest. over top of
- 28:58Speaker 1: your neighborhood, to a clearing where the magic costume tree
- 29:04Speaker 1: now stands. A clearing where it did not stand before.
- 29:10Speaker 1: This place was definitely somewhere else before, but, well, the
- 29:15Speaker 1: costume tree just looks natural there. You gently lower down
- 29:21Speaker 1: towards the tree. The door opens up. You fly inside,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and you unzip the cat costume. Immediately, your newfound sense
- 29:35Speaker 1: of agility disappears. You step out of the costume. hang
- 29:41Speaker 1: it back up where you found it and walk outside
- 29:47Speaker 1: you head back down the trail knowing that you'll soon
- 29:51Speaker 1: appear right where you need to be and sure enough
- 29:57Speaker 1: You come out of the little forest clearing, directly beside
- 30:02Speaker 1: your house. You turn around to see everything returned to normal.
- 30:09Speaker 1: The path to the magic costume tree has disappeared once again.
- 30:17Speaker 1: You head inside, straight to your bedroom, and climb into
