- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning from the porch.
- 0:30It's raining this morning and it's dark, so we're going to
- 0:33shoot from the porch this morning.
- 0:35So let's talk about opinions from other people.
- 0:39You know, it's interesting how things show up and everyone
- 0:42wants to share their opinion, and it comes from everything.
- 0:46Everyone wants to give you opinions on things, and
- 0:49sometimes we want them and sometimes we don't.
- 0:51Let's be very clear about that. Sometimes we don't want opinions
- 0:55and sometimes we do. The question always comes in two
- 1:01ways. One, did I ask for your opinion?
- 1:04That's a big one. Now lots of people will tell me.
- 1:07Talking to them, hearing it over and over and over again.
- 1:10Well, I never asked for their opinion.
- 1:12I never asked for that to come my way.
- 1:14Yet you heard it anyway. So the question is what?
- 1:17What drives people to share their opinion when ultimately
- 1:21you didn't ask for it? You know, my opinion on this and
- 1:25I purposely want you to think of it that way because it's my
- 1:28opinion on this is that most people want to be heard.
- 1:31They want to have value. They want to know that what they
- 1:34think matters. So they will share what they
- 1:38think. Because ultimately most people
- 1:41have very good intent and they think by sharing their opinion
- 1:44they may help you. Now we look at that and we say,
- 1:47oh, I don't, I didn't ask for that.
- 1:49Why would I want that? That doesn't feel good.
- 1:51And. You might not be wrong with
- 1:54that, but it doesn't change the reason that they do what they
- 1:57do, what they're the reason they're doing what they do is so
- 2:00that they can feel good about themselves or feel good about
- 2:05how how they're going to help you, even though they're not
- 2:08helping you. If that makes sense because you
- 2:11didn't ask for it and it just showed up and they gave it to
- 2:14you. So you'll find this in things
- 2:17like if you're saying, oh, I'm going to go to a certain
- 2:19restaurant or oh, we're headed here on vacation, or oh, I
- 2:22bought this kind of car, or oh, I'm seeing this movie and
- 2:26everyone, especially movies lately, everyone has opinions on
- 2:29them, always had opinions on movies, but the more things
- 2:33become politicized, the more people want to share their
- 2:36opinions of things. And as we know, an old school
- 2:39rule when I grew up was you don't discuss religion and
- 2:43politics and mixed company. My parents were very strict on
- 2:46that rule, and I always thought that, you know why?
- 2:50I didn't understand it when I was a kid?
- 2:51And as an adult, I totally understand it because it doesn't
- 2:54make for building bridges. Most of the time it just makes
- 2:59for an uncomfortable conversation.
- 3:03But again, that comes from people unwittingly or
- 3:06unconsciously sharing their opinions with the intent to
- 3:09really help. Now the other thing about
- 3:12opinions is you know. When someone gives you an
- 3:17opinion and you have your own opinion, and you start sharing
- 3:23your opinions and you have to, you know, realize are you doing
- 3:27the same thing? Are you giving your opinions and
- 3:31not asking? Is it appropriate for me to
- 3:34share my opinion at this point in time?
- 3:37And that comes back to the same thing you're trying to be
- 3:41helpful in the moment. Nine times out of 10, that's
- 3:45what goes on with people. They want to be helpful in the
- 3:48moment. Then you have the times where
- 3:51sometimes people, they just give you their opinion and they're
- 3:55trying to be destructive, they're trying to be hurtful.
- 3:58But I truly don't believe that That's most of the people.
- 4:00Most of the time. I truly believe that most people
- 4:03have very good intent and just go into that phase of trying to
- 4:07be helpful. But.
- 4:09You don't have to accept those opinions because they're just
- 4:13that they're opinions. They're nothing more than
- 4:15someone else's thought on something.
- 4:18And you get to decide. And there's a very powerful,
- 4:21powerful quote from Buddha. Don't believe anything I say.
- 4:26Find out for yourself. And I have always gone back to
- 4:30that quote because I have to decide what things mean for me.
- 4:35I have to decide, do I like the restaurant?
- 4:38I have to decide. Do I like the vehicle?
- 4:40I have to decide. Do I feel good when I go on that
- 4:44hiking trail, when I see that movie, does it add value?
- 4:47Does it not add value? And everybody has slightly
- 4:52different. Views on things.
- 4:54Think of it like fingerprints. Everyone has different
- 4:57fingerprints. Amazingly, as many humans as
- 5:00there are, we all have different fingerprints.
- 5:03So just like a fingerprint, we all have different opinions and
- 5:07different views. Can we find people that have
- 5:09some that match us? Sure.
- 5:12But even those matches won't be identical.
- 5:15There will be tweaks in them. There will be.
- 5:19Think of her as like a restaurant.
- 5:21You go to a restaurant and Pete, your family agrees, OK, we can
- 5:25go to this restaurant and there will be somebody who will say,
- 5:28yes, we're all in the same restaurant, but really, does
- 5:30everyone get the same exact meal?
- 5:32And even when they do, they order it differently.
- 5:35And I was thinking about this last night.
- 5:36We went to a burger place that we go to often and my son just
- 5:42loves burgers, and each one of us ordered the bar burger.
- 5:47That's what it's called. But we did it differently.
- 5:49And as I was listening to everyone around us order,
- 5:52everyone around us ordered differently.
- 5:54So when you take into the consideration how varied we are,
- 5:59you can appreciate the fingerprint theory of opinions.
- 6:03So don't let them weigh so heavy on you.
- 6:05They're just opinions and they're only one person, so try
- 6:10to go out there and before someone even gives you a chance.
- 6:15Ask if it's okay. Say, you know, I mean, I'm happy
- 6:19to share my thoughts. That's what I always say.
- 6:21I'm happy to share my thoughts. And then people say sure, and
- 6:24then you share your thoughts. But it's always great to ask and
- 6:27it's always great to have the sense of about what's going on
- 6:31around you. All right, my friends, I will
- 6:33talk to you tomorrow. And I hope you have a blessed
- 6:35day. Bye.
