- Cubs spoil the debut! This is The Sports Reset for Wednesday August 5th In MLB, the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 1, and the story started with Tarik Skubal’s first Dodgers start turning into a Wrigley Field reset for Chicago. Nico Hoerner drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning infield single, then added a solo homer in the eighth, while Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong helped the Cubs hand Los Angeles its fifth straight loss. The New York Yankees also had a tight 2 to 0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, with George Lombard Jr. homering for his first big league hit and helping turn two double plays in his debut. In the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries beat the Toronto Tempo 92 to 81, as Janelle Salaun scored 21 and Kayla Thornton added 20 while Golden State steadied the game after Toronto’s hot second-quarter push. Looking ahead, MLB rolls right back into a full slate, and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs gets the first look because Los Angeles is trying to stop that skid one day after Skubal’s debut got spoiled. Eric Lauer is listed for the Dodgers against Shota Imanaga, so the Cubs get a chance to close the series behind a lefty who has been one of their steadier starters. The St. Louis Cardinals at New York Yankees also carries over cleanly, with Andre Pallante set to face Will Warren after New York’s shutout and Lombard’s debut changed the feel of that series. In the WNBA, the Seattle Storm visit the New York Liberty, while the Phoenix Mercury visit the Atlanta Dream in the top early-evening windows. In other sports news, the Los Angeles Rams locked up running back Kyren Williams on a three-year, 33 million dollar extension after two productive seasons as Sean McVay’s lead back.
