- 0:00Reformed thinking. Welcome to the deep Dive.
- 0:03This is where we aim to bring clarity to crucial scriptural
- 0:05doctrines, and we do that by taking a careful look at the
- 0:08source texts. And our approach today, as
- 0:11always, is guided by what we understand as reformed thinking.
- 0:14That's right, We're focusing today on, well, the certainty of
- 0:18God's final verdict and the security that's found only in
- 0:21Christ. It's a heavy topic, but
- 0:23foundational. It really is.
- 0:25The subject we're diving into is that final universal
- 0:28accountability. It's the moment, really, when
- 0:32human history wraps up with an absolute judicial reckoning.
- 0:36Our focus is that scene at the Great White Throne Judgment
- 0:39detailed in Revelation chapter 20, specifically verses 11
- 0:43through 15. The end of the line, so to
- 0:44speak. Exactly.
- 0:46This is where the records are opened, the dead are gathered,
- 0:49and the eternal status of every single person is finally
- 0:52determined. And there's that one verse that
- 0:53just crystallizes the whole thing.
- 0:55Revelation 20.15 It hangs over the entire scene and if anyone's
- 1:00name was not found written in the book of Life, he was thrown
- 1:03into the lake of. Fire.
- 1:04Stark, inescapable language. So our mission today is pretty
- 1:08surgical. We need to distinguish the roles
- 1:11of those two different sets of records, the books of works and
- 1:15the single book of life. Right, they serve very different
- 1:17functions. And then show how Christ alone,
- 1:20the Lamb who is slain, is the only guarantee of eternal
- 1:24safety. Yeah, and you know that verse,
- 1:25Revelation 20.15, it really provides the ultimate frame for
- 1:30understanding salvation itself. How so?
- 1:32Well, you can't really grasp the sheer magnitude of grace until
- 1:35you understand the gravity of this final court, OK?
- 1:38Our sources really stress that eternal safety is completely
- 1:41tied to the truth. That justification comes by
- 1:43grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone.
- 1:46It's entirely separate from any human performance or works.
- 1:49So this scene really puts that doctrine into sharp relief.
- 1:53It does. It's a final courtroom that
- 1:54demands absolute theological precision.
- 1:57There's no room left for, you know, last minute bargaining or
- 2:00hoping your good deeds somehow outweigh the bad.
- 2:02I'm keeping the scales. None at all.
- 2:05The security for eternity doesn't rest on what's in those
- 2:08ledgers of our performance. It rests solely on the status
- 2:11recorded in that one single register, the Book of Life, The
- 2:14Book of Life. And that status, it's achieved
- 2:18only through union with the crucified and risen Lamb.
- 2:21The verdict, you could say, is already fixed before the court
- 2:24even convenes. All right, let's start by
- 2:26setting that scene. John describes Revelation 20
- 2:29versus 11 to 15. Yeah, it's it's an awe inspiring
- 2:33picture, almost terrifying in its majesty.
- 2:35It truly is. First, let's talk about the
- 2:36physical context the the bench itself.
- 2:40John sees a great white throne. Great and white.
- 2:43Right. The whiteness immediately
- 2:44signals perfect, unblemished holiness and justice.
- 2:48There's no possibility of error here, no compromise, no sort of
- 2:52ethical Gray areas. It's the absolute standard.
- 2:54Cure righteousness. And the text emphasizes its
- 2:57greatness that points to unmatched ultimate universal
- 3:00authority. No other court nor the tribunal
- 3:03has ever had this kind of standing.
- 3:04And the effect of the one sitting on it.
- 3:06Yeah, the atmospheric effect is just cataclysmic.
- 3:10John notes that heaven and earth fled away from his face, and no
- 3:14place was found for them. Think about that.
- 3:16Creation itself dissolves. It's fascinating, isn't it?
- 3:20It seems to indicate that the entire physical realm, you know,
- 3:23the creation that needed renovation after the fall, it
- 3:26just cannot endure the raw presence of this judge.
- 3:28It literally flees, displaced, dissolved.
- 3:32It really establishes the unparalleled authority of this
- 3:35court. Absolutely.
- 3:36And then when we move from that cosmic scale to the individual
- 3:39level, the summons, the authority is just as absolute.
- 3:43John sees the dead, great and small, stand before the throne.
- 3:46The dead. So everyone who has ever lived
- 3:49and died. Everyone since Adam, the
- 3:51entirety of human history and that distinction, great and
- 3:53small, it means every human marker we rely on, titles,
- 3:57wealth, power, fame, even complete obscurity.
- 4:01It's all totally irrelevant. Our distinctions just vanish.
- 4:04Gone. Every single person, whoever
- 4:05lived must be there. It's a mandatory personal
- 4:08meeting. You can't send a representative.
- 4:10You can't escape the summons. Which brings us naturally to the
- 4:13critical question, Who is sitting on this throne?
- 4:16Who has this terrifying absolute authority to command creation
- 4:22and judge all humanity? Yeah, the judge and the sources
- 4:25are crystal clear on this. Who is it?
- 4:27The judge is unequivocally identified as Jesus Christ the
- 4:31Son. The Son of God.
- 4:32Yes, and this authority isn't self appointed, it's appointed
- 4:35by the Father. Scripture clarifies this
- 4:38elsewhere. Acts 17.31 is key here.
- 4:42God fixed a day to judge the world righteously by a man He
- 4:46specifically appointed. And the proof?
- 4:48The proof he gave was raising him from the dead.
- 4:50Christ is the risen man who has the authority to execute
- 4:53judgement because, as John's Gospel says, the Father has
- 4:56given all judgement to the Son. So the resurrection and the
- 4:59judgement are intrinsically linked.
- 5:01Profoundly linked. The one who conquered death
- 5:03itself. The one who holds the keys of
- 5:05death in Hades. He's the only one qualified to
- 5:07preside over this final court. OK, now here's where the
- 5:11theology gets really, really captivating for me because the
- 5:14judge holds this unique dual role.
- 5:17Yes, that's crucial. He's judged by right of his
- 5:19deity, He is God Incarnate, and by formal appointment from the
- 5:23Father. His authority is absolute right.
- 5:26But at the same time, this very same figure is the Redeemer
- 5:30because of his finished work on the cross, and he's the
- 5:33advocate, continually pleading for his people.
- 5:36Judge Redeemer, Advocate, all in one person.
- 5:40So how does that fact that the Lamb, the sacrifice, is now the
- 5:42judge, how does that change our view of this whole scene?
- 5:46It changes everything, because if this judgement were just
- 5:49presided over by some impersonal force, some abstract law, the
- 5:52terror would be well unmitigated.
- 5:55Just cold, hard justice. Exactly, but because the one on
- 5:58the throne is the Lamb, the verdict isn't just about a legal
- 6:01code, it's about your relationship to him.
- 6:03Oh, OK. The judge is the very one whose
- 6:06blood paid the price for the names written in the Book of
- 6:09Life. So this courtroom isn't just a
- 6:11display of clinical law, it's the final revelation of whether
- 6:14a life was lived in union with the one who now sits as judge.
- 6:17So he knows both sides. He knows everything.
- 6:19He's the one opening the books, he discloses his own register,
- 6:23he confesses the names of his people publicly, and he
- 6:27righteously executes the final sentence on those who rejected
- 6:30him. He is uniquely qualified.
- 6:32He knows human sin intimately, having borne its penalty, and he
- 6:36knows divine righteousness, being divine himself.
- 6:39OK, the scene is set, the judge is identified.
- 6:42Now the proceedings begin and there's documentation.
- 6:45God doesn't forget anything. All the evidence is presented.
- 6:48We need to unpack these two distinct sets of records that
- 6:51are open. They serve very different
- 6:53purposes. Yes, this distinction is
- 6:54absolutely vital. Let's start with Ledger one, the
- 6:57plural books. John just calls them books,
- 6:59implying multiple volumes, comprehensive records.
- 7:01These are the ledgers of deeds. To transcripts of life.
- 7:03Exactly. Full, detailed transcripts of
- 7:06every human life. They register every deed, every
- 7:08work, every secret thought, every careless word, every act.
- 7:11Good, evil, public, private. It's exhaustive.
- 7:15And the passage says, the dead are judged from these books
- 7:18according to what they had done. Right, which shows God's justice
- 7:21is meticulous, it's comprehensive, nothing is
- 7:23missed. But why, if the ultimate
- 7:26deciding factor is the other book, the Book of Life, why this
- 7:30meticulous review of potentially billions and billions of
- 7:34individual deeds? That's a crucial question, and
- 7:37the answer demonstrates God's perfect righteousness.
- 7:41The purpose of this review isn't to tally up a score to see who
- 7:44gets rescued. Rescue is settled elsewhere, as
- 7:46we'll see, the works are weighed precisely because they reveal
- 7:50the internal state. They show the loyalty or the
- 7:52lawlessness of the individual heart.
- 7:54They expose the truth of how a life was lived.
- 7:57They establish allegiance or guilt.
- 8:00So they function as evidence. Exactly.
- 8:02Our sources talk about the probative value of works.
- 8:05They don't save you, but they prove the reality of your
- 8:07condition before God. So for the condemned.
- 8:10For the condemned, this review demonstrates the absolute
- 8:12fairness and equity of God's judgement.
- 8:15It shuts every mouth. No one can stand there and claim
- 8:18you miss my good deeds or my intentions were pure.
- 8:21The books show that the final condemnation is perfectly, just
- 8:24perfectly warranted based on the life they actually lived.
- 8:27OK, so the plural books provide the undeniable evidence.
- 8:31They prove why the judge is acting justly in his sentencing
- 8:34precisely. Now let's move to Ledger 2, the
- 8:36singular another book. This is the single unique
- 8:40register specifically called the Book of Life.
- 8:42Exactly. And this book is entirely
- 8:45different. It doesn't record performance
- 8:46data, it records names. Just names.
- 8:48Just names. And this is the decisive
- 8:51checkpoint. The final sentence isn't based
- 8:53on weighing the works in those plural ledgers.
- 8:56It's based exclusively on whether your name is found in
- 8:58this single register. And the structure of the passage
- 9:01emphasizes. This it does quite
- 9:03intentionally. John presents the review of
- 9:06works the plural books before he gives the final verdict clause
- 9:09in verse 15. Why is that sequence important?
- 9:12The literary placement itself pushes back against that
- 9:15persistent human assumption that maybe, just maybe, our deeds can
- 9:19secure our rescue. The review of works establishes
- 9:22guilt for the unsaved, and it demonstrates the reality of
- 9:25faith for the saved. We'll get to that.
- 9:28But the works never become the ground of acceptance or life.
- 9:31Rescue is secured elsewhere. Rescue is secured only through
- 9:34the pre written inscription in the Lamb's Book of Life.
- 9:36Which fits perfectly with the Reformed view that human works,
- 9:40even the best ones, are always tainted by sin and fall short.
- 9:44They can't contribute to justification.
- 9:46That's exactly right. Justification has to be based
- 9:49entirely on the imputed righteousness of Christ received
- 9:52by faith. So the plural books actually
- 9:54confirm the need for the Book of Life.
- 9:56They do. If salvation depended on those
- 9:59ledgers of deeds, every single person standing there would be
- 10:03condemned. Everyone, because all have
- 10:05sinned and fall short of God's glory.
- 10:08The Great White Throne is terrifying precisely because
- 10:11those plural books condemn everyone when opened.
- 10:14But then there's the other book. Then there's the single,
- 10:16separate book and the beauty, the relief, the wonder of
- 10:19salvation shines through because that book exists, and its
- 10:22contents depend entirely on the Lamb's work, not ours.
- 10:25OK, let's really hone in now on this specific language of
- 10:28Revelation 20.15. This is the verse that delivers
- 10:31the verdict the. Bottom line.
- 10:33And if anyone's name was not found written in the Book of
- 10:35Life, he was thrown into the Lake of Fire.
- 10:38It's binary. You're either in or you're out.
- 10:41No middle ground. And the sources highlight the
- 10:44deep theological meaning packed into the original Greek grammar.
- 10:48Here we need to 0 in on that phrase was found written.
- 10:52Yes, eherti Gov minos harithi gagraminos.
- 10:58This is where the technical details become incredibly
- 11:00practical for assurance. OK, break that down for us.
- 11:04So you have this combination. An aorist passive verb arithi
- 11:08was found paired with a perfect passive participle geremy knows
- 11:12having been written or written. The perfect tense that usually
- 11:15means something completed in the past with ongoing results,
- 11:18right? Exactly.
- 11:19The perfect passive participle here points to a settled
- 11:22inscription. The writing happened before this
- 11:25courtroom moment and the result, the name being written, remains
- 11:28fixed and permanent. So the court scene isn't the
- 11:30moment the names get written down.
- 11:32No, not at all. It's the moment the existing
- 11:34record is checked. It's an act of discovery or
- 11:36revelation, not creation. Think of it like checking the
- 11:40official Land Registry. The court looks up a deed that
- 11:43was properly filed, signed, sealed decades ago.
- 11:47That's a good analogy. They aren't asking you to
- 11:49quickly fill out the paperwork right there based on how well
- 11:52you behaved last week. The grammar itself resists any
- 11:56idea that the individual can somehow influence the record at
- 12:00that last moment through performance or negotiation.
- 12:03The judgement reveals it doesn't create the status.
- 12:06Precisely, it reveals the preexisting status, a status
- 12:10established by divine choice. And notice the passive voice too
- 12:15was found written. The person didn't write their
- 12:17own name in the book. The inscription was done to them
- 12:20by an authority, God Himself. This grammatical point is a huge
- 12:24anchor for the doctrine of assurance.
- 12:26Then it takes human merit completely out of the final
- 12:29equation. It does.
- 12:30The verdict isn't determined by our struggle, but by God's prior
- 12:33registration. And what about the action taken
- 12:36against the condemned? The verb was thrown.
- 12:39Eblytha. It signals A decisive,
- 12:41authoritative judicial act carried out by the judge.
- 12:44It's not accidental. Not at all.
- 12:46The condemned person is actively cast into the place of penalty
- 12:49by the judge's authority. It's not like they just drift
- 12:52over there or fall in. It emphasizes that the
- 12:55condemnation is a righteous judicial act enforced by the
- 12:59highest authority in the universe.
- 13:01OK, this brings us to the absolute core of Reform
- 13:04Security, the ownership of the book.
- 13:07The verdict doesn't hang on the person's performance Ledger, but
- 13:10on who owns this decisive register.
- 13:12Yes. And the text is explicit.
- 13:14It's called the Lamb's Book of Life.
- 13:17That possessive Lambs is theologically crucial because it
- 13:21means inclusion in that book is tied directly and irrevocably to
- 13:24the Lambs purchase price. His sacrificial death, his blood
- 13:28shed on the cross. He bought the names in the book.
- 13:30He bought the people whose names are in the book with his own
- 13:32blood. Those he purchased are the ones
- 13:34whose names are settled in that register.
- 13:36The cross secured the names within the book.
- 13:39So final safety rests entirely on.
- 13:41On union with the crucified and risen Lamb, not on your own
- 13:44Ledger of deeds. The inscription itself flows
- 13:47ultimately from God's grace alone, rooted in His eternal
- 13:50purpose, which we call election. Election God choosing a people
- 13:56in Christ before creation. Yes, that eternal choice is the
- 14:00origin of the fixed status recorded in the book.
- 14:03The names are there because of God's sovereign grace, not
- 14:06because God foresaw some merit or worthiness in those
- 14:10individuals. And this connects directly to
- 14:12the ultimate assurance for the believer, doesn't it?
- 14:14Because the judge himself is the one who dealt with the penalty.
- 14:17Exactly. The final welfare of the
- 14:19redeemed is absolutely guaranteed because the Lamb, the
- 14:22judge on the throne, he himself bore the wrath that the
- 14:26condemned are about to experience.
- 14:28He drank the cup. He drank the cup of God's fury
- 14:30in the place of his people. Since the penalty was fully paid
- 14:33by the judge himself, there's no possibility of double jeopardy.
- 14:36So for those united to Christ. For everyone truly united to
- 14:39Christ by faith, the verdict was already declared in this life.
- 14:43There is therefore now no condemnation.
- 14:46That present reality is simply confirmed publicly, finally at
- 14:49the Great White Throne. OK, that naturally shifts our
- 14:52focus to the destination. For those whose names are absent
- 14:55from the Lamb's book, the penalty is just as crucial to
- 14:58understand as the security of the redeemed.
- 15:01It is. We can't shy away from it.
- 15:02The term used is Acetylene to oppose ice tone limine to pyros
- 15:08into the lake of fire. Right.
- 15:10And our sources emphasize that the lake of fire isn't just a
- 15:13place, it's a theological state of finality.
- 15:16Revelation 20, verse 14 explicitly defines it.
- 15:19It says this is the second death, the lake of fire.
- 15:22The second death, What does that imply?
- 15:24It implies final, complete, irreversible separation from the
- 15:28life giving presence of God and the experience of His righteous
- 15:31wrath forever. It is the absolute final place
- 15:35of penalty. There's nothing after.
- 15:36It and the execution of this sentence, it actually begins
- 15:39even before the the individual verdicts are read for humanity.
- 15:42Yes, that detail in verse 14 is significant.
- 15:45Before the judgement of individuals based on the Book of
- 15:47Life, the hostile powers themselves, Death and Hades are
- 15:51thrown into the Lake of Fire. Death, the concept of mortality,
- 15:54and Hades, the temporary realm of the dead.
- 15:56Exactly. They are personified hostile
- 15:59forces, enemies of God and His people.
- 16:03Their destruction signifies the complete abolition of all
- 16:06enemies. The interim holding places are
- 16:08gone because they're no longer needed.
- 16:10Death itself, the last enemy, is finally destroyed.
- 16:14All that remains is the fixed, eternal state, the blessed in
- 16:18the New Jerusalem, and the condemned in the Lake of Fire.
- 16:21Now, regarding the nature and the duration of this penalty,
- 16:25the text is severe. We can't gloss over that.
- 16:28What are the sources say about the experience of the condemned?
- 16:31The descriptions are consistent and sobering.
- 16:34It's described as conscious, unending punishment, and
- 16:38specifically unending torment. This is a state of active
- 16:41suffering, not just, you know, ceasing to exist.
- 16:43And the duration, how do we know it's unending we?
- 16:45Look at the parallel fate of God's chief enemies.
- 16:48The lake of fire is the place where the devil, the beast, and
- 16:50the false prophet are thrown, and Revelation 20.10 specifies
- 16:54their fate. They will be tormented day and
- 16:57night, forever and ever. Forever and Ever.
- 16:59Estos Sabinas, Tony Bano. Estos Sachinas, Tony Junch.
- 17:02That's the strongest possible expression of absolute unlimited
- 17:06perpetuity. In Greek it means without end.
- 17:10So this directly counters the idea of annihilationism, the
- 17:13belief that the wicked are eventually just extinguished or
- 17:16ceased to exist. It does.
- 17:18The sources strongly caution against interpreting the Lake of
- 17:21Fire as merely a figure for extinction.
- 17:24The explicit parallel between the unending torment of the
- 17:27devil and his cohorts and the destination of all whose names
- 17:30are missing from the Book of Life really guards the biblical
- 17:33description of hell as everlasting punishment.
- 17:36If the wicked were just extinguished, the language of
- 17:38torment day and night, forever and ever, wouldn't make sense.
- 17:41Exactly. The penalty is described as
- 17:44eternal separation and conscious suffering.
- 17:47It's punishment experience away from the presence of the Lord
- 17:50and from the glory of his might. As Paul puts it elsewhere, it's
- 17:53the metaphorical cup of God's fury being paid out forever.
- 17:56The judge is righteous, and the punishment is portrayed as
- 17:59fitting the offense of rejecting the eternal God.
- 18:02OK, we need to step back for a moment and show that this great
- 18:05White Throne scene with its Book of Life isn't something John
- 18:08just invented. It's actually the culmination of
- 18:11a theme that runs throughout the Bible.
- 18:13Yes, that's vital for seeing the continuity of God's plan.
- 18:17The idea of a divine register, a book kept by God with names in
- 18:22it, goes way back. Where do we first see it
- 18:25clearly? Explicitly in Exodus 32, right
- 18:28after the golden calf incident, Moses is interceding for Israel
- 18:32and he makes this incredible plea to God.
- 18:35If you won't forgive them, then lot me out of your book that you
- 18:38have written. So Moses assumes God has such a
- 18:40book. He assumes it exists and that
- 18:42being in it is linked to life and covenant blessing.
- 18:45It's a register kept by God. We see it in the Psalms too,
- 18:48right? Sometimes used negatively.
- 18:50Yes, like in Psalm 69 where the psalmist prays against the
- 18:53wicked, let them be blotted out of the Book of the Living.
- 18:55Let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
- 18:58This suggests the book in that context might represent those
- 19:01currently alive within the covenant community whose status
- 19:04could seem dynamic based on faithfulness.
- 19:06But then it takes on a more final end times meaning.
- 19:09Definitely in Daniel 12 verse one, speaking about the ultimate
- 19:13time of trouble, it says, But at that time your people shall be
- 19:16delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the
- 19:19book. Now it's clearly linked to final
- 19:21deliverance at the end of history.
- 19:23It confirms God knows and preserves His true people.
- 19:26And the New Testament picks up this thread.
- 19:28It does. Jesus himself affirms it.
- 19:30In Luke 10.20, after the disciples return, excited about
- 19:34their power over demons, Jesus redirects their focus.
- 19:37He says, don't rejoice just in that, but rejoice that your
- 19:41names are written in heaven. So it's a present reality for
- 19:43believers even now. A.
- 19:45Present reality providing pleasant assurance.
- 19:48Paul clearly believed it too. In Philippians 4.3 he mentions
- 19:52his Co workers Clement and others whose names are in the
- 19:55book of life. And Hebrews.
- 19:57The writer to the Hebrews describes the heavenly reality
- 20:00believers are approaching. He calls it the assembly of the
- 20:02first born who are enrolled in heaven.
- 20:04Hebrews 12.23 enrolled like citizens on a city register.
- 20:08It's citizenship granted by grace.
- 20:10So when John writes Revelation, he's drawing on this long
- 20:14established theme. Exactly.
- 20:16He's not inventing the Ledger. He's bringing all these earlier
- 20:20references to their ultimate fulfillment.
- 20:23And crucially, he consistently redefines the book through the
- 20:26sacrifice of Christ. It becomes the Lamb's book of
- 20:29life. And it appears throughout
- 20:31Revelation itself. Repeatedly, always confirming
- 20:34the secure destiny of those belonging to Christ.
- 20:38Remember the promises to the churches, to the Conqueror in
- 20:41Sardis. Jesus promises in Revelation
- 20:433.5. I will never blot His name out
- 20:46of the book of Life. I will confess His name before
- 20:48my Father and before his angels. That's ultimate security right
- 20:52there, the judge himself promising to confess your name.
- 20:54It is, and the book functions as the great divider throughout the
- 20:57book. Those who worship the beast, the
- 20:59inhabitants of the worldly system, are described in
- 21:02Revelation 13 and 17 as those whose names have not been
- 21:05written from the foundation of the world in the Book of Life of
- 21:08the Lamb who was slain. And finally, it controls entry
- 21:11into the New Jerusalem. Right.
- 21:13Revelation 21.27 is explicit. Nothing unclean will ever enter
- 21:17it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only
- 21:21those who are written in the Lambs book of life.
- 21:24It's the final citizenship roll call.
- 21:27The consistent theme is that final welfare hinges on this
- 21:30prior established bond with the Lamb who bought them.
- 21:33OK, this biblical tracing really confirms that the Great White
- 21:36Throne Judgment is the final public confirmation of something
- 21:39decided much earlier. Let's try to pull this together
- 21:42now into a kind of doctrinal synthesis, connecting this scene
- 21:45to standard Reformed theological categories.
- 21:48Yeah, the core room scene really is a powerful illustration of
- 21:51God's sovereignty and his grace. And the core foundation where it
- 21:54all begins has to be election. God's sovereign choice.
- 21:57Yes, the very existence of a fixed list of names written
- 22:00before the foundation of the world, as Paul says elsewhere,
- 22:03confirms that God eternally chose a people for Himself in
- 22:06Christ. The Lamb's Book of Life is the
- 22:08outworking of that eternal, unchangeable purpose.
- 22:11It's not based on anything God foresaw in us.
- 22:13Not foreseen faith or foreseen merit.
- 22:16No, the father gave a people to the son, and the son, who is
- 22:20also the judge, guarantees he will lose none of them.
- 22:23That's the bedrock. And flowing from election comes
- 22:26justification. You mentioned earlier the
- 22:28verdict is already spoken now for the believer.
- 22:31Can you clarify that link between justification today and
- 22:34judgement then? Sure.
- 22:36Justification is the legal verdict God declares now in the
- 22:39life of the believer the moment they place their faith in
- 22:41Christ. It's an act of God's free grace
- 22:44where He pardons all our sins and accepts us as perfectly
- 22:48righteous in his sight. Based on Christ's work, not
- 22:50ours. Based entirely on Christ's
- 22:52perfect obedience and His substitutionary death.
- 22:55It's a present forensic, meaning legal reality.
- 22:59You are justified now. The Great White Throne isn't
- 23:01where justification is earned or achieved.
- 23:04It's where that prior legal status is publicly confirmed and
- 23:06announced before the entire universe.
- 23:08So when the judge checks the Lamb's book.
- 23:10He finds the name of the justified person confirming the
- 23:13no condemnation status they've possessed ever since their
- 23:16conversion through faith. OK, that makes perfect sense.
- 23:19Now back to those other books, the books of deeds.
- 23:22Let's connect this to sanctification, the ongoing
- 23:26process of becoming holy in the believer's life.
- 23:30If salvation is secure based on the Lamb's book, why open the
- 23:33believers deed Ledger at all? Right.
- 23:36Why drag out all our imperfect actions?
- 23:38It's because sanctification, growing in holiness, is the
- 23:41necessary and inevitable fruit of genuine new life in Christ.
- 23:45It has to show up. It has to.
- 23:47A truly saved person, regenerated by the Spirit, will
- 23:50inevitably produce deeds motivated by love for God and
- 23:53empowered by the Spirit. So when the books of deeds are
- 23:56open for the saved, they aren't weighed to determine acceptance.
- 23:59That's already settled. So why look at them?
- 24:01They are displayed to show the reality and the authenticity of
- 24:04the living faith that justified them in the first place.
- 24:06They serve as evidence the good works done imperfectly but
- 24:09genuinely out of faith and love, demonstrate publicly that their
- 24:13faith wasn't just an empty claim.
- 24:14It was a living, operative faith that produced real, though
- 24:18imperfect, obedience. Evidence, not grounds.
- 24:21Exactly. Evidence, not the basis for
- 24:23acceptance. OK, and that brings us to the
- 24:25question every believer wrestles with when they think about
- 24:28Judgement Day, Preservation and assurance.
- 24:32If the book is fixed based on election, how can the believer
- 24:35who feels weak and faltering today maintain certainty until
- 24:39that final day? Yeah, that's the practical heart
- 24:42of it. For many, the security, the
- 24:44preservation, is maintained entirely by the power and
- 24:47faithfulness of Christ Himself, not by our own grip.
- 24:50We're kept by him, not keeping ourselves.
- 24:52Precisely. We're not preserved by our
- 24:54ability to hold on to Christ, but by his unbreakable grip on
- 24:57us. He promises he will confess the
- 24:59names of his people. Hebrews tells us he lives
- 25:02forever to make intercession for us.
- 25:03He's our constant advocate. And his promise in John 10.
- 25:06I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no
- 25:09one will snatch them out of my hand.
- 25:10That's an absolute guarantee from the Shepherd.
- 25:13Those united to Christ are kept by God's power through faith, so
- 25:17assurance ultimately rests on a Christ's character and his
- 25:20finished work, which is reflected in the fixed status in
- 25:23the book that he owns. OK, we've established the scene,
- 25:26the judge, the books, the verdict, the penalty and the
- 25:29doctrines. Now let's turn towards
- 25:31application. When that final summons comes,
- 25:34what's the central practical question that gets settled by
- 25:37the judge? Well, it's clear the court isn't
- 25:40a place for theological debate or trying to argue about the
- 25:43entries in your personal Ledger. Forget that the plural books
- 25:46established guilt for all. The singular book provides life
- 25:49for some. So the fundamental question is.
- 25:52The fundamental question settled by the judge who is the Lamb is
- 25:56really singular and deeply relational.
- 25:58Do you belong to him who died in Rose?
- 26:01Is your name among those He purchased with His blood?
- 26:04Is your life united to his? Everything else flows from the
- 26:07answer to that one question. The implications, then for
- 26:10someone listening who is not converted, who hasn't trusted in
- 26:13Christ? They are immediate and, frankly,
- 26:16severe. Absolutely.
- 26:18If the verdict hinges on a name being found written, implying it
- 26:21was written beforehand, then the time to seek that inscription to
- 26:25flee to Christ for refuge is now.
- 26:27There's an urgency here. A profound urgency.
- 26:31God commands all people everywhere to repent now
- 26:33precisely because he has fixed a day for judgment and appointed
- 26:37Jesus as the judge. This whole scene is the ultimate
- 26:41warning against spiritual procrastination or indifference.
- 26:44The Bible is starkly clear. There's no second chance for
- 26:47repentance after death. If someone dies apart from
- 26:50Christ, they face this judgment seat without an advocate,
- 26:53without their name and the Lamb's book.
- 26:55Now, for the believer, this scene provides deep, solid
- 26:57assurance because the judge is our Redeemer.
- 27:00But there's also a call to sobriety, isn't there?
- 27:03We mentioned earlier warnings in Scripture, like the possibility
- 27:06of names being blotted out in Revelation 3.5.
- 27:09How do we reconcile the absolute security of preservation with
- 27:12warnings that sound like security could be lost?
- 27:14Yeah, that's a classic point of tension, and Reformed theology
- 27:18addresses it through the doctrine of means, the warnings
- 27:20in Scripture about enduring, about falling away, the threat
- 27:23of judgement. They don't imply that God's
- 27:24promise to preserve his elect is fragile or might fail.
- 27:28So what are the warnings for? The warnings themselves are the
- 27:30the means God uses to keep His people persevering.
- 27:34The person whose name is genuinely written in the book
- 27:36sealed by the Spirit will hear those warnings and by God's
- 27:39grace heed them. They take sin seriously.
- 27:42They pursue holiness. God preserves His people in the
- 27:46path of obedience and vigilance, not apart from it.
- 27:49The warnings keep us alert and dependent on His grace.
- 27:53OK, So what specific comfort does this whole picture provide
- 27:56to the believer who feels weary, Whose conscience accuses them?
- 28:00Maybe someone who feels like their personal deeds Ledger
- 28:03looks pretty grim. The comfort is immense and it's
- 28:06grounded outside of ourselves. Your safety, your eternal
- 28:09security, does not depend on the quality or quantity of entries
- 28:12in your personal Ledger. It depends entirely on the
- 28:15identity and faithfulness of the Lamb who owns the book and who
- 28:17guarantees the security of every single person he purchased.
- 28:21Remember his promise? Remember His promise.
- 28:24All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever
- 28:27comes to me, I will never cast out.
- 28:29When guilt rises, when you feel the weight of your sin, the
- 28:32answer isn't to try harder to clean up your Ledger.
- 28:35The answer is to run immediately back to His blood, back to the
- 28:38cross, trusting that the judge himself, because of his own
- 28:42justice and his own sacrifice, must forgive and cleanse you
- 28:45when you come in faith and repentance.
- 28:47The verdict is already in for the belief.
- 28:49The verdict is already in. There is therefore now no
- 28:52condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 28:55That's the reality you stand in today, and that's the reality
- 28:58that will be publicly declared on that final day.
- 29:01Now the precision of this passage.
- 29:03Revelation 20 point 11115. The clear distinction between
- 29:06the books, the identity of the judge, the nature of the
- 29:08penalty, it provides really firm ground for refuting several
- 29:12common theological errors. Doesn't.
- 29:14It it really does. It cuts through a lot of
- 29:15confusion. First, as we touched on, it
- 29:18clearly refutes both universalism and
- 29:20annihilationism. Remind us how?
- 29:22Universalism, the idea that everyone will eventually be
- 29:25saved, simply cannot stand against the explicit statement
- 29:28that those not found in the Book of Life are cast into the Lake
- 29:31of Fire. There is a final eternal
- 29:34division. Annihilationism.
- 29:36The idea that the wicked just cease to exist fails because of
- 29:40the language of unending conscious torment associated
- 29:43with the lake of fire paralleling the fate of the
- 29:45devil. It's eternal punishment, not
- 29:48extinction. OK, what else?
- 29:50It seems to cut against errors related to human effort too.
- 29:53Yes, it addresses 2 opposite errors here.
- 29:56Works righteousness on one hand and antinomianism on the other.
- 29:59How does it refute works righteousness?
- 30:00Works righteousness is just fatally undermined because it
- 30:03misunderstands the purpose of the books.
- 30:05Deeds are evidence. Yes, they reveal the heart's
- 30:07allegiance, but rescue, acceptance, life That rests
- 30:10exclusively on the inscription in the Lamb's book, which is by
- 30:13grace. The whole structure confirms
- 30:15salvation isn't earned by deeds. And the opposite air
- 30:18antinomianism. Antinomianism, basically the
- 30:22idea that since we're saved by grace, our behavior doesn't
- 30:25matter, is also shown to be gravely wrong.
- 30:28While works don't save us, the Bible consistently teaches that
- 30:31genuine saving faith is never alone.
- 30:34It necessarily produces the fruit of holiness and good
- 30:37works. The books of deeds are opened
- 30:40for believers precisely to display the reality of that
- 30:42living faith. If someone claims to have faith
- 30:45but their life's record shows only consistent lawlessness and
- 30:48rebellion, the evidence contradicts the claim.
- 30:51True grace always transforms the life.
- 30:53It also seems to strongly refute any idea of conditional security
- 30:56or maybe last minute changes to the Book of Life.
- 30:59Absolutely. That Greek grammar we discussed
- 31:02in EKI Govanus was found written with the perfect participle
- 31:05points to a settled inscription done before the court convened.
- 31:09It pushes back hard against any idea that names get written in
- 31:12during the judgement based on some final plea or performance.
- 31:15Or that a genuinely written name could be erased.
- 31:18Or that a name truly written there by God's grace,
- 31:21representing someone united to Christ, could somehow be blotted
- 31:24out due to later failure. Christ gives his sheep eternal
- 31:28life. He promises to confess their
- 31:30names. He says no one can snatch them
- 31:32from his hand or the Father's hand.
- 31:35Our security is anchored firmly in Christ's sovereign keeping
- 31:38power and the unchanging nature of God's elective grace recorded
- 31:42in that book. And this understanding shouldn't
- 31:44lead to carelessness either. No, quite the opposite.
- 31:47Understanding the certainty of the judgement and the reality
- 31:49that our lives are recorded should profoundly chase in our
- 31:52conduct now. We're urged everywhere in
- 31:54scripture to live self controlled, upright and godly
- 31:57lives in this present age, setting our hopefully on the
- 32:00grace that will be brought to us when Christ returns.
- 32:03If Jesus himself said we'll give account for every careless word,
- 32:06how much more should we govern our speech, our thoughts, our
- 32:09habits with godly seriousness? This clarity really compels us
- 32:13towards, well, plain and urgent speech and sharing the gospel
- 32:16too. It has to.
- 32:17The world may dismiss the lake of fire as some archaic myth,
- 32:21but Jesus spoke about it more than anyone, and Revelation
- 32:24confirms it's awful reality. As the second death, God has
- 32:28fixed the day for judgement. We must therefore preach the
- 32:31gospel, the good news of rescue through Christ, with both
- 32:34compassion and clarity, urging people to repent and believe
- 32:37now, because final destinies hinge entirely on being rightly
- 32:41related to the Lamb before that day arrives.
- 32:43So, to summarize, the court stands, the books are opened,
- 32:46and the book is read. Revelation 20, Point O1, one for
- 32:5015 reveals this final public righteous judgment.
- 32:53Every deed is accounted for. Every name is checked.
- 32:55The deeds disclose who we truly are, revealing the allegiance of
- 32:58our hearts. But it's the Lamb's book that
- 33:00announces to whom we belong and final safety.
- 33:03Eternal life in God's presence rests entirely on that prior
- 33:06inscription, secured by the cross of Christ alone.
- 33:08So let me leave you with this thought to consider The Judge of
- 33:11all the earth is also the Redeemer.
- 33:13The one with the absolute authority to condemn is the very
- 33:16one who bore the wrath for sin. And the final judgment hinges
- 33:19entirely on this prior fixed union with him, with the
- 33:22crucified and risen Lamb. How does that conviction that
- 33:25the old time Judge is bound by his own covenant love and his
- 33:28own shed blood? How does that change the way you
- 33:30speak about Christ to others and maybe more personally?
- 33:33How does that unchangeable reality shape your desires, your
- 33:37choices, your conduct today?
