- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Waffer, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland, County
- 0:12of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37God's still answering prayer, and you might say, well, why was
- 0:40James martyred and Peter was set free?
- 0:42I don't know. God does everything according to
- 0:45the counsel of his own will. Why do some people get healed
- 0:48and other people don't? God does everything after the
- 0:50counsel of his own sovereign will, we conclude.
- 0:55And what happens to Herod? You know you can get mad at
- 0:58whoever it is. It's messing things up in the
- 1:01world right now. One thing to be encouraged, the
- 1:04Bible says vengeance belong to the Lord.
- 1:07Amen. I will repay evil for evil.
- 1:11Every dog has its day, right? When we look out over the
- 1:14landscape of culture right now, it's challenging not to feel
- 1:17completely hopeless. The division we see in our world
- 1:21feels like it's at an all time high.
- 1:24Not to mention the political polarization.
- 1:27We want to see the justice of God rain down.
- 1:30We question why God allows certain things to happen.
- 1:34As you just heard from Pastor Clark, you need to put your
- 1:37trust in God's perfect will as perfect.
- 1:41You can't always see the justice of God, but you can know that
- 1:45beyond the shadow of the doubt, it will come.
- 1:47God will have his day of vengeance now.
- 1:50Here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts Chapter 11 with today's
- 1:54edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:57Now Barnabas, he is now on the scene.
- 2:01You remember Barnabas, He's the guy that gave the property to
- 2:05the early church in the beginning.
- 2:08He donated property and Anis Anias and Sapphira was sort of
- 2:12jealous of what he did and they wanted to be recognized like
- 2:15Barnabas. So they they lied and they said
- 2:17they were given whatever to God that they didn't give and ended
- 2:19up dying and getting dragged out of the church.
- 2:22The Lord just dealt with her. They're lying and quite sobering
- 2:26experience in those early days. Barnabas was a, a man of great
- 2:31comfort and he was an encourager.
- 2:34And this is just the way he always was.
- 2:36A matter of fact, whenever Paul, Saul got converted on the on the
- 2:41road there to Damascus and, and everybody's afraid because Paul
- 2:45was a persecutor of Saul was a persecutor of Christians before
- 2:48he was called Saul. Barnabas was able to meet with
- 2:53Saul and see that his conversion was legitimate, that what
- 2:58happened to him was a miracle, and that he really got saved.
- 3:02And then he was able to go up with Barnabas to Jerusalem later
- 3:06to meet the religious leaders at the time, the Judaizers, and
- 3:13tell them, hey, don't be afraid of Saul.
- 3:16He's one of us now. He's our brother.
- 3:19And so Saul also is aware of the fact that whenever Saul was
- 3:23called into the ministry that the Lord told him he would take
- 3:28the gospel to the Gentiles. The Jewish member of the
- 3:32Sanhedrin, a Pharisee now born again, becomes an apostle
- 3:36because he's an eyewitness of Christ on that road.
- 3:40And he goes up after his meeting in Jerusalem and they sent him
- 3:45to Tarsus for they figure, 8 to 12 years.
- 3:49So he's up there by himself, not with anybody else, studying,
- 3:54learning. He didn't go into the ministry
- 3:56the next day after he got saved. He was used the next day after
- 4:00he got saved. He did speak in the synagogues,
- 4:02but there was a lot for him to learn and hear from the Lord.
- 4:04Eventually he wrote most of the New Testament.
- 4:07So Barnabas in his mind, they're sending him.
- 4:11We'll continue to read here. Now verse 19.
- 4:13Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose
- 4:17over Stephen, you remember Stephen was martyred few
- 4:20chapters back, the first martyr, Christian martyr in the, in the
- 4:24New Testament. These people then were
- 4:27persecuted and they travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and
- 4:31Antioch. So they're, they're spread out
- 4:33and they're preaching the word to no one but the Jews only.
- 4:37So initially these people that are in in Jerusalem are, are
- 4:40being spread out because of the persecution, but their focus
- 4:43again is just Jewish people. But some of them were men from
- 4:47Cyprus and Cyrene who when they had come to Antioch spoke to the
- 4:51Hellenists. You remember the Hellenists were
- 4:53the Greek cultural Jewish people preaching the Lord Jesus and and
- 4:59the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed
- 5:02and and turned to the Lord. Now now recognize in this
- 5:05section of Scripture here that these were people like you and
- 5:08me. They weren't, I'm not an
- 5:10apostle. You aren't either.
- 5:11You know, we're, we're just like normal believers.
- 5:14We all have different spiritual gifts, but we're just like
- 5:16normal everyday people, right? These people were normal
- 5:19everyday people that were pressed out because of the
- 5:21persecution and they were out there telling other people about
- 5:26what Jesus did for them and as a result of their communication in
- 5:31their marketplace and their neighborhoods where they live,
- 5:34that kind of stuff. A great number of people
- 5:36believed and turned to the Lord. None of them said, well, we got
- 5:39to wait till the apostles come up or wait till Peter comes up
- 5:42or Barnabas or Saul or James or whatever.
- 5:45No, like it was so infectious the the work of God's Spirit and
- 5:49the lives of people like you and me, which it should be that way
- 5:52still right? That's why we're studying Acts
- 5:54to get revived, to learn more about how we can be used by Lord
- 5:58in these kind of situations, right?
- 6:01That they had an impact and all these people believed and turned
- 6:05to the Lord. Then news of these things came
- 6:08to the ears of the church in Jerusalem.
- 6:10So they're hearing what's going on.
- 6:12The Lord is bringing a harvest. People are getting saved.
- 6:16So they think about who they sent out already that God has
- 6:21used. Now Barnabas is going to go as
- 6:24far as Antioch. They're sending Barnabas up
- 6:27there as a leader. And when he came and had seen
- 6:30the grace of God, the grace of God, right?
- 6:34When you see the grace of God, it attracts you.
- 6:38I want the grace of God to be poured on in here, that there's
- 6:42not enough room for people to come, not because of us, but
- 6:46because of the grace of God. I'll tell you an interesting
- 6:50story. I was on a Zoom call this week
- 6:54and I was with a man who is a devout Roman Catholic.
- 6:57Him and his wife, they happened to live in a garden apartment up
- 7:02in North Jersey, right by the Calvary Chapel, the large
- 7:05Calvary Chapel up in North Jersey.
- 7:07Pastor Lloyd Pulley, who's on our radio pastor's at church,
- 7:11and they would watch every Sunday these cars come and there
- 7:15was an overflow so people would park in the garden apartment
- 7:18parking lot. And he said to his wife, this
- 7:21guy Nix's name, he says, honey, what's what's going on here?
- 7:27Is that like a cult up there or what?
- 7:29These people, they get out of their car and they have an aura
- 7:32about them. He, the Holy Spirit, was helping
- 7:34them to see the glory of God on the faces of these families.
- 7:40And it was attracting him, the grace of God on these people
- 7:43like us just getting out of their car, walking into church.
- 7:47He said, you know, we had to go over there sometime.
- 7:49She says, yeah, why not? Why don't we go over there?
- 7:51So they went over and the first Sunday there for the first time
- 7:56in their lives, he told me this after the business Zoom call.
- 7:59He said, I want to talk to you about something off the record.
- 8:02I see you're involved. Involved with Calvary Chapel.
- 8:05Yeah. And I said, yeah.
- 8:06And so then he begins to open up.
- 8:08Well, I want to tell you what happened.
- 8:09He said he went in. And for the first time in their
- 8:12lives, they heard the simple gospel.
- 8:15They got saved. Then they began to develop all
- 8:17these friends and all this stuff.
- 8:19And the story goes on. And I said, well, the business
- 8:22conversation was interesting, but this made my day.
- 8:26This is what it's all about, isn't it?
- 8:30As a man in the industry that I'm part of that started the
- 8:33largest manufacturing frame company in Italy many years ago
- 8:37in his early 20s. His name is Leonardo de Vecchio
- 8:41and he rags to Rich's story. He was worth billions of
- 8:45dollars. I have no idea about his
- 8:47spiritual life, never met him, but he's dead now at 87 years
- 8:51old. He died last week, left
- 8:53everything behind. The only thing and I said to
- 8:56Nick, it's going to matter when we leave this world is our
- 9:00relationship with the Lord, whether we had one or not,
- 9:02right? And he said Amen to that.
- 9:06All the sudden the business conversation wasn't important.
- 9:09What was important was our conversation about Jesus and
- 9:12what he's done for us. And so Barnabas is seeing the
- 9:21job that needs to be done. It says when he came and he saw
- 9:26the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all that
- 9:30with purpose of heart, they should continue with the Lord.
- 9:33And that's what we do here every week, right?
- 9:34Wednesday, Sunday, whenever meetings gather. 1 Encourage
- 9:37each other to keep, keep on keeping on with the Lord, right?
- 9:41We need that encouragement, all of us.
- 9:45And he was a good man. The Bible says about Barnabas,
- 9:48full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and a great many people
- 9:51were added to the Lord. I mean, the importance again, we
- 9:54hear over and over and over again the importance of being
- 9:57filled with the Holy Spirit in our lives.
- 10:00And then Barnabas departed for Tarsus in verse 2025 to seek
- 10:04Saul. He's got to find Saul.
- 10:07Because I remember this guy was specially called by God to
- 10:11preach to the Gentiles, and when he had found them in verse 26,
- 10:15he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year
- 10:19they assembled with the church and taught a great many people
- 10:23and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
- 10:26This is the first time they were identified by the unbelievers as
- 10:31Christ's followers, Christians, Jesus freaks, people who belong
- 10:37to the Lord didn't say this is where first, where they were
- 10:40called Catholics or Orthodox or Calvary Chapel or Baptist or
- 10:46Methodist or Luther. We're Christians, for crying out
- 10:48loud. We're Christians, right?
- 10:50We attend this church, but bottom line is we're Christians.
- 10:54And Christians should be able to relate to Christians everywhere,
- 10:57no matter what church you're in or where they're from, right?
- 11:00We're one body, one church, Jesus Christ the head.
- 11:06And so this is the beginning of this ministry of Paul.
- 11:10And in verse 27, in those days, prophets came from Jerusalem to
- 11:14Antioch. A lot of stuff going on in
- 11:16Antioch. Antioch was a Pagan city.
- 11:19It made Las Vegas and New York look calm.
- 11:23Immorality, Pagan worship, prostitution, that's all kind of
- 11:29Pagan rites. A very, very difficult place to
- 11:32be a Christian. Nonetheless, the spirit of God,
- 11:35the power of God, was saving souls in the midst of a society
- 11:39and culture that was godless. They weren't depending on a
- 11:43leader in government as Christians at that time because
- 11:47there was no leader in government to have special favor
- 11:50with, right? I mean, in our country, we have
- 11:53the privilege of electing officials.
- 11:55Hopefully that can be believers. It can make things a little bit
- 11:57easier for us. But right now things aren't real
- 12:01easy for us. But doesn't mean that God isn't
- 12:03in control or God still can't work, or God still can't move,
- 12:07right? We need to depend on that
- 12:10authority, the authority of God on the throne in His Kingdom,
- 12:15that nothing happens outside of His will.
- 12:18And so they had no one to depend upon but the Lord, and they did
- 12:21this ministry and the power of God and salvation and the life
- 12:25of the Holy Spirit was so alive in that early church in this
- 12:29city of Antioch, about 300 miles north of Jerusalem.
- 12:33So this prophet comes up, one of them named Agabus.
- 12:37He stood up and showed by the Spirit there was going to be a
- 12:40great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in
- 12:43the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each
- 12:47according to his ability, determined to send relief to the
- 12:50brethren dwelling in Judea. There was no pressure on tithe
- 12:54or you give this amount or give that.
- 12:56They gave as they were able to and and that's what we do here.
- 12:59We give as we're able for the glory of God and the furtherance
- 13:03of his Kingdom. And they were able to provide
- 13:06relief to these people struggling in the area of Judea.
- 13:10This they also did and sent it to the elders by the hands of
- 13:13Barnabas and Saul. So this offering was collected,
- 13:16and then Barnabas and Saul were then responsible to take it.
- 13:20So this violence now begins to occur in chapter 12.
- 13:25Now about that time, Herod the king stretched out his hand to
- 13:28harass some from the church. Now this is the descendant of
- 13:31Herod the Great who was responsible for having all those
- 13:35babies killed back in the days when Christ was born.
- 13:38This whole family of Herod is evil and wicked and all they
- 13:41want to do is come against the Kingdom of God.
- 13:45And and so he's going to harass some from the church.
- 13:50And what happens verse 2? Then he kills James the brother
- 13:53of John with the sword. This isn't James the brother of
- 13:56Jesus who was head of the church in Jerusalem.
- 13:59This is the James and John whose mother went to Jesus and said,
- 14:03can they sit on the right and left hand side of your Kingdom?
- 14:08And Jesus said in order to to have any kind of experience in
- 14:13the Kingdom that is of some exciting value, you have to
- 14:18suffer much for what it is you believe.
- 14:21And sure enough, they did suffer and James was beheaded, the
- 14:26first apostle that was martyred. And because he saw that it
- 14:30pleased the Jews, Herod saw the Jews were clapping all excited.
- 14:34He wants popularity. He proceeds further to seize
- 14:38Peter also. Now it was during the Days of
- 14:40Unleavened Bread this is. And so when he had arrested him,
- 14:44he put him in prison and delivered him to 4 squads of
- 14:46soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people
- 14:49after Passover. So it's Passover, Peter's
- 14:52probably thinking about what Christ went through again,
- 14:56remembering this, he's in prison.
- 14:59They this time remember before he got out of prison in the 4th
- 15:04chapter, they're thinking this guy's, he's got some tricks, he
- 15:08can get out of prison. We better put more people with
- 15:11him. So, so many hours a day.
- 15:14There would be 4 soldiers. One would be chained to the
- 15:19handcuff and 1:00 on the other side to make sure he wasn't
- 15:22going to get loose. There'd be two by the door to
- 15:24prevent him from escaping. So four people Peter in verse 5
- 15:29was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered
- 15:33to God for him by the church. So we pray, we intercede.
- 15:37We have groups that in Church of pray about every possible thing
- 15:41you can imagine. It comes through the prayer
- 15:43chain. We're we're praying all the
- 15:45time. I know you're praying too for
- 15:48the work of God and the and the movement of God's Spirit.
- 15:52So Peter's in trouble and James, this was martyred and Peter's
- 15:56probably thinking I'm going to be next tomorrow morning.
- 15:59My life is over. And when Herod was about to
- 16:02bring him out that night, Peter was sleeping bound with two
- 16:06chains between two soldiers. And the guards before the door
- 16:09were keeping the prison. So Peter, he's not like
- 16:12obviously uptight or nervous. If it was me, I'd be like, I
- 16:15can't sleep. But Peter was trusting God, no
- 16:18problem sleeping. And he's between these guards,
- 16:22it says, now behold, an Angel of the Lord in verse 7 stood by
- 16:26him. Angel comes in, a light shines
- 16:28in the prison. He struck Peter on the side and
- 16:31raised him up. So Peter had to actually be hit
- 16:33to sort of come to consciousness from his sleep.
- 16:36And he tells him arise quickly and his chains fell off his
- 16:39hands. And no sooner did he stand up
- 16:41miraculously these chains fall off.
- 16:44This is a result of the move of God, the prayers of God's
- 16:47people, the will of God, the purpose of God.
- 16:49Peter's ministry is certainly not over yet.
- 16:51The Angel said to him, Gird yourself up and tie on your
- 16:54sandals. Now the Angel could have
- 16:56obviously made sure everything was put together miraculously,
- 16:59but no, there was some work that Peter had to do.
- 17:02He had to get down and tie his sandals.
- 17:04He probably never thought of forgot about this story, right,
- 17:07this experience. Every time he tied his shoes.
- 17:09I remember when the Angel was telling me to tie my shoes.
- 17:12And so he did. And he said to him, put on your
- 17:14garment and follow me. So the angel's helping, helping
- 17:17them get together there and get ready to go.
- 17:19So he went out and followed him and did not know that what was
- 17:22done by the Angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.
- 17:26So I'm sure it was sort of like, is this some kind of like thing
- 17:29I'm thinking has happened? But it really isn't happening.
- 17:31You know, you can have a dream sometimes and you're like, wow,
- 17:33that was amazing. And then you find out it was
- 17:35only a dream. Sometimes you're thankful it was
- 17:37only a dream. Other times you wish it was real
- 17:39because it turned out to be a good, good story, right?
- 17:42So when they go by the 1st and 2nd guard posts, and they come
- 17:47to the iron gate that leads to the city, it opens to them of
- 17:50its own accord. Miraculously this door opens and
- 17:53they went out and went down the street.
- 17:54And immediately Angel departed from him.
- 17:57And when Peter had come to himself in verse 11, he said,
- 18:00Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent his Angel and has
- 18:03delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the
- 18:06expectation of the Jewish people.
- 18:09So when he had considered this, he came to the House of Mary,
- 18:12the mother of John. This is the mother of John Mark,
- 18:17who's going to be a missionary to cousin of Barnabas that we'll
- 18:19catch up later on in the weeks ahead, whose surname was Mark,
- 18:23where many were gathered together praying.
- 18:25So there's this prayer meeting going on on behalf of Peters
- 18:28Deliverance. And as Peter knocked at the door
- 18:30of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer.
- 18:33And when she recognized Peter's voice because of her gladness,
- 18:37she didn't open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter
- 18:40stood before the gate. She's so blown away and excited.
- 18:43You think she would open the door?
- 18:44Peter can't even get into the prayer meeting for himself.
- 18:47He's still outside and I'm sure he's looking around thinking,
- 18:50man, one of these guards going to know that I'm out of prison,
- 18:53that someone's going to come down the street.
- 18:54Hey, that's a guy that we just arrested, you know, so he's
- 18:56probably paranoid. He's standing at the gate and
- 18:59they they said to her, you are beside yourself, basically.
- 19:01You're crazy, lady. And she kept insisting that it
- 19:04was so. So they said it is his Angel.
- 19:07They think it's just a reflection of who Peter really
- 19:10is, his guardian Angel, whatever.
- 19:12Now Peter continued knocking. I'm sure he was desperate.
- 19:15And when they opened the door and saw him, they were
- 19:18astonished. Isn't that encouraging?
- 19:21You ever pray and God does something and you're just like,
- 19:25you just don't get it. You're, you're almost like, I
- 19:28don't believe this happened. I mean, that's just the way we
- 19:30all are. These are deep prayer warriors
- 19:33here. They're asking God to do a
- 19:35miracle. God does a miracle and they
- 19:38just, they just can't grasp everything that's happening
- 19:42here. They open the door.
- 19:43They're astonished, but motioning to them with his hand,
- 19:47he's telling him keep silent, be quiet.
- 19:49He declares to them how the Lord had brought him out of the
- 19:52prison and said, Go tell these things to James.
- 19:56That's the guy that's leading the church in Jerusalem, not the
- 19:59one that was martyred. And he departed and went to
- 20:01another place. Then, as soon as it was day,
- 20:07there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had
- 20:10become of Peter. But when Herod had searched for
- 20:13him and not found him, he examined the guards and
- 20:16commanded that they should be put to death.
- 20:18That's a serious crime that they've committed, letting Peter
- 20:22get free. And they were all put to death,
- 20:25all 16 of them. And when he went down from Judea
- 20:28to Caesarea and stayed there. So we see all this stuff going
- 20:35on, these wicked rollers, God's doing these miracles in spite of
- 20:39the culture, in spite of the society, in spite of the things
- 20:42not being fair in the world at that time.
- 20:46But God's still answering prayer.
- 20:47And you might say, well, why was James martyr and Peter was set
- 20:51free? I don't know.
- 20:52God does everything according to the counsel of his own will.
- 20:55Why do some people get healed and other people don't?
- 20:58God does everything after the counsel of his own sovereign
- 21:01will, we conclude. And what happens to Herod?
- 21:06You know you can get mad at whoever it is.
- 21:08It's messing things up in the world right now.
- 21:11One thing, be encouraged. The Bible says vengeance belongs
- 21:15to the Lord. Amen.
- 21:17How will we pay evil for evil? Every dog has its day right now.
- 21:22Herod had been very angry with the people of Tyre inside and in
- 21:25verse 20. But they came to him with 1
- 21:28accord, and having made Blastus, the King's personal aid, their
- 21:31friend, they asked for peace because their country was
- 21:34supplied with food by the King's country.
- 21:36So everybody's want to kiss up to this terrible leaders just so
- 21:39they can have their food and prosperity, whatever.
- 21:42So on a set day, Herod arrayed in royal peril.
- 21:45He's sitting up there like a big shot with all his robes and, and
- 21:47regalia. He's sitting on the throne and
- 21:50they're giving ovate oration to him how great he is and what is
- 21:54this and that? I mean, it's disgusting, right?
- 21:56And the people kept shouting the voice of a God and not a man.
- 21:59So they're attributing Herod as being like a God, the voice of a
- 22:05God and not of a man. Then immediately, and this is
- 22:08how God deals with judgment, an Angel of the Lord struck him
- 22:13because he did not give glory to God.
- 22:16What's going to happen to those in our own government?
- 22:19One day there will be a judgement.
- 22:21If it isn't in this world, it will definitely be in the next.
- 22:25No one's going to get away with this godless agenda and this
- 22:29immoral in the face of God. And look what's happening in our
- 22:32country. But they're not going to get
- 22:34away with it. God's going to be faithful.
- 22:37And this is what, you know, what would happen if this happened
- 22:39right now in Washington? I don't know, man.
- 22:41It would be pretty exciting. I think immediately an Angel
- 22:44Lord struck him because he did not give glory to God, and he
- 22:47was eaten by worms and died. That's so gross, isn't it?
- 22:52Like, like worms are coming out of him, man.
- 22:55It's like yuck. Yeah, he's ugly.
- 22:57You know, this. I don't want to think.
- 22:59I don't want to have lunch next after reading that but what was
- 23:03beautiful in verse 24 it says, but the word of God grew and
- 23:07multiplied. Jesus said he will build his
- 23:11church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
- 23:15How exciting the book of Acts is.
- 23:17It's a living book. The Lord is still moving by his
- 23:20spirit. A man in a prison.
- 23:22Here's Grace FM other prisoners here in Grace M passing notes
- 23:27talking about the Lord pretty much all day long listening to
- 23:32certain teachers on there being encouraged.
- 23:35Someone told me this morning they turned it on this and then
- 23:39it happened to hear a thing about family and she said it was
- 23:41really encouraging because she wants her family to be a family
- 23:44that walks with God and be blessed by by God.
- 23:47You turn that thing on any time of day and you're going to be
- 23:50blessed. You're going to hear something
- 23:51that's going to encourage you. The Word of God.
- 23:54The word of God. Amen.
- 23:57We're so glad you joined us today on this edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching through
- 24:03the Book of Acts, which is the only book that chronicles the
- 24:06history of the early church immediately after Jesus's
- 24:10ascension. It gives us a front row seat to
- 24:13how the Gospel began to move outwards, starting in Jerusalem
- 24:17and reaching into the heart of the Roman Empire.
- 24:20In just three decades, a small group of frightened ordinary
- 24:24believers became a bold, spirit empowered movement that
- 24:27transformed the known world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson. It's a reminder of what God can
- 24:34do when His people are surrendered, obedient and filled
- 24:38with the Holy Spirit. Their perseverance still
- 24:41inspires us today. May we follow their example and
- 24:46live faithfully for Christ in our own time.
- 24:49We hope today's message encouraged you.
