- 0:00SPEAKER_01: So many good texts about the church and uh if you're a chorchard family or not.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And this started legitimately.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: We were talking about this post-show yesterday, and we were with a colleague and we said, Are you a church art family?
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And he goes, Yeah, yeah, whiteboard on the side.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: Some are digital, some are are just the white, you know, dry erase.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what I think is really good about this conversation is is like you're gonna start to make Lydia, not Mick, but well, yeah, Make.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: You're her parent, of course.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Sure, it's important.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: You still gotta make your kids do something until a certain age.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Okay, Lydia, you're gonna get all the garbage from the bathrooms.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: Like that's an easy one, but it's still something responsible and she can learn to do that stuff.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: And then like Gavin, because you said you were you were doing the lawn around Gavin's age, right?
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Now, here's the thing about that.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: I grew up in an era there wasn't short charts.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: In my era, back in my day, uh, it was your your parents showed you or told you this is what you're gonna do.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: I showed you.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I showed you.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: That's a good one.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I would assume that my dad or my mom, I think it was probably more my dad, showed me the whole garbage trick.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Um now, of course, I made them feel horribly guilty because one time I slammed my finger in the uh garage door as it was coming down those seams and flat.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: You did it on purpose.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: And we had to go to the ER.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, oh yeah, see, making Scott do these chores.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Real good move there, parents.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: That's a true story, by the way.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: It was this finger right next to the middle one.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, is that why it's crooked?
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's actually what it is.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: No, it is.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: So, that all being said, uh, I think it was that era.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Then we moved to the era of the handwritten little notes.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: You had those.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: We we had a text message on that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: My theory behind this chore chart, it became the in thing somewhere in the 90s.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: It had to have been, and I don't know, but it had to have been either in one of those magazines, because we all still used to use magazines back then.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: It was either in a magazine, do this, because we didn't have the YouTube, we didn't have TikTok, we didn't have Instagram to influence.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: If it was today, if there was no chore charts until today, it would be a TikTok influencer that would have launched this trend.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I said it was the British nanny, and I can't remember, it was a reality show.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: She was like, you know, nanny 911 or something like that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Emergency nanny or nanny or whatever.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: It's just funny how we've evolved this whole lifestyle of how we get kids to do things.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: But then you go to a store, you go to like Target or Big Lots, whatever, they've got all the chore chart accoutrements.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Lots of money-making opportunities.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: They're not looking for they don't care if your kids do the charts or the do the chores.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: They just want you to buy their charts.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Buy the magnets, buy the stickers.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Buy the$500 electronic chore chart.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Did you set it up?
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's go back to showing the chores really quick.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: This is an audio message that we got on our app.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Get on the Wink 106 app, click the microphone, and you can do this too.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I remember when I had to do the dishes, and if they weren't all clean, I had to redo all of them all over again.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: All of them.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: All of them.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Just to say that you gotta get them right.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: But that's part of the chart is how to do the chores.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Teaching your kids.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Not many of the charts have that.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: More of it is uh under alley.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Make your bed.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: It doesn't say make your bed.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: And this is how you do a hospital corner.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: It doesn't say that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: What I'm saying is you you usually have like dollar amounts.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, if you've done all these chores, you get like, let's say five dollars, or you get a new toy.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: So if you don't do the chore right, because you know every kid's gonna be like, yeah, I'm gonna have asses.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: And if you don't do it right, you don't get the money.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: And that's also the lesson that comes with it.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Let me read a couple more.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm a millennial mom and grew up with a list from my mom, so naturally I've introduced that to my seven and five-year-old, especially after school, before they got before they get technology.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: So that's their their reward, you know.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: By the way, that person was born in 89, kind of on the not elder millennial, but like, you know, before we move to the, hey, this is now the in thing is the chart.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Here's what they do.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: You need to check off the five boxes on your list before you can watch TV or use your tablet, which includes doing a chore, making sure their toys are picked up and their room is picked up.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: Beds are made, dogs are fed, dishes are put away from the dishwasher.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, what do you do?
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: You're making your kids do everything.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Get off your ass.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Born in 87.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I'm kidding.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I'm kidding.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: I'm totally kidding.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Never had a chore chart.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: However, my mom would show us once how to do it right, and then would have us continue to redo it.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: What is with everyone's mom being like, do it again?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's keep doing it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Um, wait, hold on a second.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Um okay, when my daughter was in therapy, she changed the chore chart from a chore chart to a daily living activities, and that's when it fizzled out.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: And it that's when it fizzled out! And it and then now it became the get the stuff done or you get no internet.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Sometimes you just gotta go right to the core of the problem.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: It's either money or in or internet, either one.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Um, let me see if I have another one that I wanted to read.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Um, bum bum bum bum bum bum.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, we got somebody that wanted to give us credit.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that was for.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: I should read that before uh Oh, this is a okay, this is just a bonus thing.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: By the way, I just want to give you guys some credit where credit is due.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Your A and V energy commercial you did is one of the best I've heard.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're welcome.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Yes, well, tooth decay?
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, you'll get it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Anyway, uh I th oh super nanny, not nanny 911.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Super nanny was it, yes.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: It was super nanny.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: There was a nanny 911, and it was on like A E when the Super Nanny was on ABC.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: So you had Super Nanny right in front of your face, and then if that wasn't enough for you, you had nanny 911 on the sub channel.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Honestly, what I'm hearing though is the chore chart does work as long as you use technology as the reward.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: That's exactly the answer.
