Transcript
- 0:00The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Hey what's up.
- 0:04This is Tom Arnold and you're listening to uh tech talk Radio. They're
- 0:08really great and I love them. Hey how about a copy of Windows?
- 0:11Uh? Can I get a laptop? Welcome to another episode of tech Talk
- 0:16Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanda Weird, and I'm Justin Lemmy.
- 0:21And you know, we've been kind of waiting for a couple of weeks for
- 0:23this one because so Justin, you've been kind of busy and you know,
- 0:27I had to step away for a couple of weeks. But when we last
- 0:30on the last episode of tech Talk Radio, actually we were talking about you
- 0:35were going to take the plunge and get a Tesla. That's why. And
- 0:41I actually, I'll be honest with you. We've had a couple of listeners
- 0:43that have asked, did Justin ever get a Tesla? And how come we
- 0:47haven't heard him on the show in a couple of weeks. Let's what happened.
- 0:53So we're we're glad that you're back, but we wanted to know,
- 0:56like, how how has this experience been for you? You actually get you
- 1:00ordered? It is where we last left and then you were just in the
- 1:03waiting game, and what got you to order it was taking a test drive.
- 1:08Well, okay, so we'll we'll we'll start from the very beginning.
- 1:12We Mesa's cars getting old and we wanted to get our new car. And
- 1:19with the federal income tax rebates and the state of Colorado income tax rebates seventy
- 1:26five each, fifteen thousand dollars right off the bat, discount off the car.
- 1:33I said, let's look at Tesla because we can't get these kind of
- 1:37discounts anywhere else. Yeah, so we look, we looked, and a
- 1:42quick recap. We we went up to the Tesla dealership, which is amazing
- 1:47because Tesla is not a dealership. They're not a car dealer. They're a
- 1:53retail store. And and and I'll make that point clear soon because when we
- 1:59want in there, we were like, hey, we're interested in this in
- 2:01the model, why we want to take it for a test drive. And
- 2:06this was on a Friday evening, and the guy was like, yeah,
- 2:08no problem, here's the keys, take it for the weekend. I'm like,
- 2:13uh wait, what don't like, don't aren't you concerned that I might
- 2:17like, like steal the car. He's like, dude, we have GPS
- 2:23on every single car, and these cars are self driving. We can turn
- 2:27it around and make it drive itself back. Really yeah, oh yeah,
- 2:32And I was like, oh, okay, touche all right, So we
- 2:37took the car, great car right off the bat that was amazed. Which
- 2:40model again, Model why so so so just a recap real quick, on
- 2:46the bottom of the line, the bottom of the test the line. You
- 2:49get the Model three. Then you go to Model Y, which is a
- 2:53little bit more of an suv. It's a more of like a hatchback kind
- 2:55of a crossover vehicle. Then you go Model X, which is the one
- 3:00with the goal wing doors that kind of raise up like the DeLorean, right,
- 3:05you know, and the Model X, and then you go to Model
- 3:08S. Those two, the Model X and Model S are considered the luxury
- 3:15tesla's the Model three in the Model Y are considered consumer grade teslas. However,
- 3:22it's still amazing. I mean the car just feels luxury already off the
- 3:28bat. Now obviously ride smooth ride, interiors amazing. I mean, controls
- 3:35are I mean, it's okay, I'm just gonna get into controls. The
- 3:38controls are insane because you don't have any physical buttons anymore. Like you've got
- 3:45your your your left and your right uh steering wheel, clicker thingies whatever you
- 3:52want to call it. Right, but that's for your turn signals on the
- 3:55left side and on the right side is your neutral part drive you know,
- 4:00reverse whatever right that's on the right side. Other than that, everything else
- 4:04is done through the app on the screen. Okay, it takes a little
- 4:10bit of getting used to, but once you get used to it, it's
- 4:13amazing. And we drove that car. I was super impressed because, first
- 4:19off, the torque on the car zero to sixty three seconds, and the
- 4:26fact that the car doesn't have a transmission. It is just an electric motor.
- 4:30It just goes, goes, goes, goes, goes. It doesn't
- 4:33have to go stop, change gear, go faster, stop, change gear,
- 4:39go faster. It just keeps going. Wow, it's like a roller
- 4:45coaster. I mean, it's like a go kart. I don't know.
- 4:48I mean, it's it's hard to explain. I don't know. I would
- 4:53be happy you comparing is Tesla why to a go kart? Well, elon,
- 4:58if you want to talk to me, call Okay, but seriously,
- 5:01this car is amazing. I mean everything about it, the features of the
- 5:04car. We brought it home, we parked in the garage, we plugged
- 5:09it into the charger. We got the mobile charger, which is just the
- 5:14standard one hundred ten volt you know charger. That is a little bit upsetting
- 5:20because it doesn't really give you that much. It gives you like two miles
- 5:24per hour on the charge. So it's great. It's not great, but
- 5:28it gets the job done. The problem is when we went back, we
- 5:32returned the car, we said, look, we're gonna buy the model Why,
- 5:35and they're like, okay, So we went ahead and pre ordered it.
- 5:39We put the two hundred and fifty dollars down for a deposit. We
- 5:44got the app. The app shows us every everything you do with a Tesla
- 5:48is done through the app. We got the app, we started following the
- 5:53whole process. It said the cars being manufactured, it was actually made for
- 5:59us, So it was it was done in Giga Texas where they have factory
- 6:05in Austin and Austin, Okay. So it was manufactured in Austin. And
- 6:12we got the premium model. So we got the model Why, but we
- 6:14got premium. So we got the premium interior, which is white leather interior
- 6:20cost us an extra thousand dollars. Right, then we got the premium red
- 6:26exterior. Because every single Tesla I see on the road is either white or
- 6:30black, we wanted gray. There's a graphite gray, yes, but we
- 6:36wanted some to stand out, so we went the premium red. So that
- 6:40was an extra two thousand dollars. So we got the car. The cars
- 6:44being so, this is not like when I bought my Chris or I bought
- 6:47it brand new. I know that I just picked a color. It wasn't
- 6:53made for me. They just had it and said here, here you go.
- 6:56They actually made this is gonna be Justin and Mesa's car were building it
- 7:00right now. Yep, that's pretty amazing. Yeah. So it took about
- 7:04three and a half weeks for them to make it, and then they shipped
- 7:08it to Superior, Colorado, which is just basically halfway between here and Boulder,
- 7:15between Denver and Boulder, not too far. So we get the notification
- 7:19your car's here. Awesome, go to pick up the car, get in
- 7:24it. Actually, no, I'm sorry, I take that back. It
- 7:27was shipped to Aurora, Colorado, Eastern Denver. Anyway, we go to
- 7:31Aurora. We pick up the car. Beautiful, it's washed. Everything is
- 7:35beautiful about it. Oh my god, the car looks amazing. I get
- 7:40in it to drive. I pull out onto the street, onto the highway,
- 7:46and all of a sudden, but on it, I get a notification
- 7:50speed limited to fifty nine miles per hour. I was like safety, Well,
- 7:58okay, okay, well that's what I initial thought about, Like,
- 8:00I know they do this with the rental the loaner cars in the in the
- 8:03in the test drive cars, they limit the speed. But I'm like,
- 8:07no, no, no, no, no, this is this is my
- 8:09car, Like, I can drive as fast as I want. So I'm
- 8:11kind of like driving and I'm trying to look through the settings to try to
- 8:15figure out where the speed limitter is right, and it's not. It's not
- 8:18turned on. The speed limitter is not turned on. But I cannot drive
- 8:22any faster than fifty nine miles an hour on the interstate. Oh that's that's
- 8:28actually more dangerous, isn't it. It is extremely dangerous because nobody drives less
- 8:35than seventy on the interstate. So here I am on the interstate driving fifty
- 8:39nine miles an hour in the low lane in a red Tesla. I've got
- 8:46a semi on my butt honking is horn and I'm just like, I can't
- 8:52go any faster. It was large march. I was I was freaked out.
- 8:58I was like, what the hell is going on? I finally pull
- 9:01back into the house. I get to the house, I pull back in,
- 9:05I go in. I start looking on YouTube and I start doing all
- 9:07these things, and there's like there's a there's a secret maintenance mode. So
- 9:11I'm like, all right, So I go in. I get into the
- 9:13secret maintenance mode and I can see the error code and the error code says
- 9:18bad coolant sensor rear drive unit. And I'm like, oh, I literally
- 9:26pulled this car off the lot. It has seven miles on the odometer,
- 9:31and I've got a bad coolant sensor right just for you. So it wasn't
- 9:35a limiting It was wasn't limiting because of like a breaking period. It was
- 9:41it was maybe it was it was limiting because it couldn't check the temperature of
- 9:48the battery pack. Why didn't they Why didn't they test that it? In
- 9:52Texas, Tesla is doing the Microsoft approach. Build the product, let the
- 9:58consumers be the beta testers. Oh, that's not good when you're talking a
- 10:03vehicle. Well, yeah, exactly. So yeah, at this point,
- 10:07I'm like sitting at like a two out of ten on my rating of Tesla.
- 10:13I just got a brand new car. This thing's got three miles on
- 10:16the or seven miles on the odometer. After I drove it home and I'm
- 10:18already getting a bad sensor. Yeah, So I called Tesla. They're like,
- 10:22oh, just go through the app, file a service claim. They're
- 10:26gonna diagnose it remotely and then let you know. Okay, all right,
- 10:31So I go and file a service claim. Wait wait, wait, wait,
- 10:35you have to plug it like a cat five no car, No,
- 10:37no, no, no, no, no, it's got it's got five
- 10:39G. It's got five G Internet wow built into it. All right,
- 10:43So I file a claim and they come back a couple of days later though,
- 10:46oh yeah, we found it. It's a it's a bad it's a
- 10:48bad rear what do they call it? Rear drive unit? Right? Okay,
- 10:56what does that mean? Breaking in for service? Oh man, oh
- 11:00my god, are you are you serious? Yeah? So yes, I
- 11:05took it up to Tesla. I take it up to Tesla Superior, where
- 11:07we first initially met with those guys. Take it up there, I drop
- 11:11it off, I demand a loaner. We like, well, I mean
- 11:15I've got other cars, I've got other cars to drive. But I'm like,
- 11:18no, I just paid this much money for a car. I want
- 11:22one of your cars to drive around while I'm waiting for my car to get
- 11:26fixed. So they gave me a Model three, which is fine. It's
- 11:30fine that a lower lower on the scale lower, it's a lower k Yeah,
- 11:33the Model three is okay. I'm sorry, Elon, but the Model
- 11:37three is literally a go kart. It's like, you mean, it's so
- 11:43low to the ground. It's it's like a low rider. I feel like
- 11:48like I should be like bumping my like my hydros or something because it feels
- 11:52like a low rider. I need to google this our listeners if you if
- 11:54you want to know, you can google Model three Tesla and you can see
- 11:58what it looks like. But okay, but really low to the ground.
- 12:01So anyway, I drive that thing for like a week and a half.
- 12:03I'm waiting for my car to get fixed. It keeps saying it's parked in
- 12:07so and so, but it's in service. I keep messaging the service guys
- 12:09like, are you guys gonna look at this or anything? Yeah, and
- 12:13they're like, oh yeah, well we'll get to it. We'll get to
- 12:16it. We gotta keep it over the weekend. Just just keep the loaner.
- 12:20Well, the loaners got like ten percent battery and I'm not gonna I'm
- 12:22not gonna pay for you know, I'm not gonna charge the loaner. So
- 12:26I just like, wait a second, this car, this loaner car is
- 12:31owned by Tesla. It's not owned by me. Right, what if I
- 12:37take it to a supercharger? What would happen? Right? So what explained
- 12:41to us what a supercharger is? Sore. Okay, So across the United
- 12:46States there are super charging stations, and this is kind of like if you're
- 12:52driving a Tesla, it's kind of like your gas station. The Teslago logo
- 12:54on them, right, yeah, they do, they have the Tesla logo.
- 12:58But this is your gas station. This is where you go to fill
- 13:01up your Tesla. You simply plug it in and it charges the car.
- 13:05But this is a super charger. It charges at four hundred and eighty volts
- 13:13I think like fifty six amps or something. Basically, Okay, here's the
- 13:18what it is. I pulled into a Come and Go, which is the
- 13:24franchise that we have around here. There's a Tesla supercharger station. They got
- 13:28ten bays. I pulled into one of them. I literally backed in,
- 13:31grabbed the plug off the supercharger. I plugged it into the car. The
- 13:37supercharger itself started humming. It was like and I'm like, wait what.
- 13:43I look at the car. It went from ten percent battery. By the
- 13:50time I walked in, got a cup of coffee, walked back out to
- 13:52the car, it was already at forty percent. Wow, that's pretty good,
- 13:56right. It was charging at six hundred miles per hour. Now you
- 14:03hear that miles per hour, you think, oh that's fine. No no,
- 14:05no, no no, I'm talking about six hundred miles of range per
- 14:11hour of charging. Wow, that's cool. It was charging it insanely fast.
- 14:16I sat there for thirty minutes and the car was one charged. Wow.
- 14:20That's good on Tesla's dime. On Tesla's Dimeah that makes sense. Yeah.
- 14:26So anyway, although tonight, although justin to be fair, when you
- 14:31know, my car was burned up in the auto shop. The rental they
- 14:35gave me, I still had to pay for the gas it went in it.
- 14:37Yeah, we didn't that so tonight. Side note, right, so
- 14:41quick side note is that, Okay, the test the plug for the Tesla's
- 14:45has become the standard for evs going forward. Yes, yes, I just
- 14:48want to put that out there. So if you're thinking, oh, the
- 14:52supercharging network could become available to other manufacturers, it is. Yes, Tesla.
- 14:58Tesla beat everybody to the punch. They are now making that that charger
- 15:03is going to be that I think they're called the Neema charger or something like
- 15:05that. Right, that's going to be the standard for all evs. Okay,
- 15:11because Tesla was the first one to do it. Anyway, So today
- 15:16I'm working at water World and I'm I'm I'm so quick side note. Yeah,
- 15:22this week I'm working like I'm I'm slinging burgers right because all the kids
- 15:24are going back to school, I have to work the food stands. I'm
- 15:28listening to Spotify on our speaker, and all of a sudden, I noticed
- 15:33that the Spotify cuts out, and I'm like, wait, what's going on?
- 15:35And I look at my phone and it says now playing on mesas Tesla,
- 15:39And I was like wait what, Oh, they finally grab the car.
- 15:43They're looking at it. They're they're driving it. Yeah, they're driving
- 15:46it. They're finally doing something with it. So then then I'm watching it
- 15:50and I see them. I see them opening the doors. Because I got
- 15:54centry mode, I got centry, I can see the cameras of the car.
- 15:56I can see them working on it. And then all of a sudd
- 16:00all of a sudden, I see them lift the body of the car off
- 16:06of the car and set it down next to the frame. Oh my god,
- 16:11that's a trip. It's like looking at your skeleton. And I'm looking
- 16:18at this, I'm like, oh my god, there's the guts of my
- 16:22car. And they're taking out the rear drive motor. They're replacing the entire
- 16:29motor of the rear wheels because what exactly that what was bad? It took
- 16:36them an hour? Wow, literally from the time they took the frame of
- 16:40the car off, put the motor out of the car, put the new
- 16:42one in, put the frame back on. Boom done one hour. What
- 16:48I've never heard of a car being replaced or fixed that way, you take
- 16:51the whole I've never heard of that either. This is insane, right,
- 16:56and then they're like, your car's fixed. I'm like, are you Are
- 17:00you sure you fastened the things to the thing, because like I'm watching you
- 17:04guys, and you're like doing stuff that I didn't think was possible with the
- 17:08car. And they're like, oh no, no, no, don't worry,
- 17:11it's it's fine. So I go to the car. Here's the two
- 17:12bolts that they didn't Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh yeah, by the
- 17:15way, we found these two extra bolts. You guys. Great, you
- 17:18guys, just see you Now I fixed computers. There's always bolts laid around
- 17:22going yeah, where did that go too? Yeah? Whoop? See.
- 17:25But no, we go to pick up the car and I'm like, I'm
- 17:26walking around, I'm getting underneath the car. I'm looking at it. I'm
- 17:30like, well, I can't, I can't tell anything's wrong. Like,
- 17:34all right, let's get in the car. We get in the car.
- 17:37We drive It works great, a nice finally. Yeah, yes, we
- 17:42went ninety five miles an hour around the interstate. Oh boy, oh boy.
- 17:49And guess what that ninety five miles an hour took four point seven seconds.
- 17:55Wow, amazing. So the ride is a nice way. Is that
- 17:57the smoothest ride you've ever had up any cars. Well, no, I
- 18:02wouldn't say that because the Model X, the models have a better suspension,
- 18:04better springs and all that other stuff. It's still a very snice smooth ride.
- 18:10But when you get up to the Model X or the Model S,
- 18:12you're gonna get even better. But honestly, out the door this car,
- 18:17after the federal and state income tax rebates, this car is gonna be thirty
- 18:22two thousand dollars. And that's a pretty good deal that you're getting a ton
- 18:25of. That's for a new car. Yeah, yeah, for a new
- 18:29Tesla. Yeah. Like, seriously, I don't know what Arizona is offering
- 18:33as far as rebates. I know that they're doing different things. But I
- 18:38mean, that's that is a tremendous deal, especially if it's you know,
- 18:41if it's it's riding good. My big concern, of course, would be
- 18:45on range and is that gonna vary depending on is that gonna vary depending on
- 18:49heat? Cold deal in the winter snows of Denver. Well, i'll let
- 18:56you know in about four months. Oh you'll find out, right, what
- 19:00about what about for now? If they told you, like, oh,
- 19:03you're gonna be able to go on a full charge four. No, that's
- 19:07a huge thing right now. The Tesla's being a class act. I think
- 19:11it was a class action lawsuit against Tesla because of the mileage range. Basically,
- 19:18it inflates the mileage range until you get to about fifty percent battery and
- 19:22then it tells you the true mileage range. And people are upset about that.
- 19:26It's like, why not just tell us right off the bat, like,
- 19:30yeah, here's how many miles you got. But they're not doing that.
- 19:33So I don't know the answer to that question right now. What about
- 19:38the technology that's inside obviously a camera system, the cameras, what do they
- 19:44actually watch? So here's a quick picture if anybody's watching. This is a
- 19:47quick picture of our Tesla right now, okay, And you can see the
- 19:49charging cable coming from it, so it's telling me it's charging right now.
- 19:53That's cool. I can actually open the trunk. I can open the fronk
- 19:57because they call it the fronk. Why do they call it that because there's
- 20:02a front trunk. Okay, all right, because there's no engine in the
- 20:06front. I can turn on the climate. I can make the car dance
- 20:11like literally, like I can play a song and the windows and the doors
- 20:15will open and close to the beat of the song. Well that's needed.
- 20:18It's yeah, I know, it's totally unnecessary. I could even make the
- 20:22car fart. I've heard about that one. Yes, yes, I was
- 20:27okay. The first day we had the Tesla, I parked it at work.
- 20:30I parked it at work and I got a sentry mode alert said somebody's
- 20:34near your car. And I looked at the camera and there was this guy
- 20:38leaning on the Tesla leaning did not And so I'm looking at this and I'm
- 20:45like, well, that's kind of rude. I'm like, okay, well,
- 20:48I can flash the lights, I can honk the horn, or oh,
- 20:52I can make the car fart. Great. So I was like,
- 20:56oh, yeah, let's try this. I pressed the button. All of
- 20:59a sudden, I see the guy jump away from the car, and then
- 21:02I see he's got like five daughters around him that are just pointing and laughing
- 21:06at him, and he's like, no, no, it was the carr
- 21:07foar to God, and I can hear them They're like, yeah, right,
- 21:11dad, yeah, that yeah right dad, Yeah you far did not
- 21:14the car and the guy ran away from the car. Is there something kind
- 21:17of different about having an electric vehicle pass gas a little bit, but it
- 21:23is hilarious. It is hilarious. Eric. Eric loves the Tesla, all
- 21:30right, I mean he he's he's playing around because it's got an arcade built
- 21:34into it. You got Netflix Disney. So now as far as rear seat
- 21:41for the passenger being Eric, uh, does he have like is that standard
- 21:45to have a screen like a mounted in the seat or is that something you
- 21:49add or how in the Model X you have a standard screen, but in
- 21:53the Model Y you do not have that. So no, we're gonna have
- 21:56to stick to the you know, standard tablet. How about for because I
- 22:00know you when you think of a tesla, I would think because it's electric,
- 22:04you would think about it as you know, just passengers. What about
- 22:08for storage like you're say you're going on a vacation. You got storage is
- 22:12pretty good. I mean you've got a massive trunk because again there's nothing out
- 22:18there to there's no spare tire on it. By the way, they also
- 22:22told us don't ever put a jack if you have a flat tire, don't
- 22:26put a jack in the Tesla because you'll crack the battery back. So you
- 22:30get unlimited roadside assistance from Tesla. What they do is they come out with
- 22:34a truck that has an air bag, and the air bag lifts the car
- 22:40and then that's how they change the tire. So you got that whole trunk
- 22:44to yourself. You got a trunk and the deeper trunk, plus you got
- 22:48the frunk, like I said, the front a trunk, right, and
- 22:53you've so you've got a ton of storage, a ton of storage. And
- 22:56the best part is the model. Why can tow up to thirty five hundred
- 23:03pounds? Whoa really can to a full trailer? Right? But isn't that
- 23:07gonna a decent size trailer? Not a full trailer? Yeah? Okay,
- 23:12shush, a decent size is camper guy over here, he knows. But
- 23:18isn't that gonna affect your battery life in the vehicle? Of course it will,
- 23:23yeah, of course it will. Like you leave the parking lot.
- 23:26Okay, we're done, Ye sold five feet? What happens justin if you've
- 23:30made plans, you're driving down the road and all of a sudden, you
- 23:34know, with a hybrid, at least you can switch and still put gas
- 23:38in it. Well, what happens in the electrical situation where suddenly you have
- 23:44no electricity and the vehicle is you know, needs a juice, well,
- 23:48I mean a portables. Well, I think roadside assistance would come and give
- 23:55you a jump or whatever. But honestly, when it gets to like ten,
- 23:59I've never done it. I've never done it. But I've heard that
- 24:03when you get down to like ten or fifteen miles left on the battery,
- 24:07it's gonna just keep barking at you. It's gonna be like baby, baby,
- 24:11baby, baby, like you gotta pull over, you got a charge
- 24:15now, Like it's gonna keep bothering you. Right, But I've never I've
- 24:18never gotten it down that low. So I don't know. Well, this
- 24:22sounds like a good experience if somebody is thinking about it. Yeah, but
- 24:29again it's all been fixed in. I mean, this would never happen though
- 24:33with a standard vehicle you're driving off a lot and suddenly having apart. I
- 24:37don't think that's ever happened to anybody I know. Yeah, you know,
- 24:40so, I mean this this kind of stuff when you're buying a car,
- 24:44that can be kind of scary. I've been, I'll tell you be honest
- 24:45with you. I looked at the Avaya, is it the Aiva or Avaya,
- 24:49the one that Nissan puts out and I thought that was the leaf.
- 24:53No, that's a that's a Chevy, isn't it Chevy Leaf? No,
- 24:56Nissan Leaf? Okay, Nissan, isn't another one? Or is it Toyota
- 25:02thinking up that it's that sounds like a Toyota. Yeah, it's uh,
- 25:07it's the one I had a picture of where the poll the pole where they're
- 25:10doing the ev ride from the North Pole to South Pole and they've made their
- 25:15way to Mexico and it's a really cool looking vehicle. I've been following them
- 25:19on X and it's it's it's pretty cool to see. So, I mean,
- 25:23you know, if you've been thinking about it, you your experience so
- 25:26far has not been that bad. Now I have a question for you,
- 25:30and we're gonna take a break and come back because we want to find out
- 25:33a little bit about DTI's big announcements that they've put out. But solar panels
- 25:38are did you go that route? Oh? Absolutely, we have Tesla Solar,
- 25:44then you did Teslas Solar well, so so we did Solar City Solar
- 25:49before Tesla bought them, and then Tesla bought them, and so we are
- 25:55technically Tesla Solar. The only thing we're missing is the Tesla power wall,
- 26:00right, and that's like ten thousand dollars and we don't we don't have How
- 26:03was that expert could believe it or not? Some guy came to the door
- 26:07and he was, of course pitching Solar, right, and Gloria was home.
- 26:11I wouldn't home, and she told him, oh, my husband would
- 26:14be home tomorrow. Come on by and talk to him. And I said,
- 26:17to where I go? But I got home and she told me,
- 26:18I said, why don't you do what I just said? We say we
- 26:22rent. Just tell him we rent that we you know, we don't own
- 26:25the house. We do. But I thought that's a good way to get
- 26:27them not to come back. But she said, well, maybe it's a
- 26:30good idea. And that surprised the heck out of me that thinking about it,
- 26:36it's actually a really good idea. I mean, considering where you're at
- 26:38in Tucson, dude, Solar would would just absolutely decimate your electricity bill.
- 26:47I mean, it's when we got Tesla Solar. It's amazing. I mean,
- 26:51we generate up here in Denver. I don't know exactly we generate like
- 26:53twenty killer watts per hour or whatever I mean. It's it's insane. I
- 27:00can't even imagine how much you could generate down in Arizona, especially if you
- 27:04have a perfect facing house to the sun, which you covered your entire roof
- 27:08with the solar panels. Oh my god. And then I especially if you
- 27:14you know, during monsoon season, if you ever got hail, the Teslas
- 27:18solar panels will protect you from having to get a new roof, right,
- 27:22what about what about costs? Well, the way we did it was we
- 27:27got the Solar City my power agreement, which basically means Solar City, which
- 27:33is now Tesla, becomes our electricity provider. We pay them how much we
- 27:41generate, and it's basically less than the electricity company offers. So what they're
- 27:48doing is we generate the electricity and then whatever we don't use. If we
- 27:53generate more than we use, which we don't, it would get fed back
- 27:59into the grid okay for other people to use it. Basically make our meter
- 28:03take backwards, which has never happened. Does your solar panels then also use
- 28:10your your Tesla car charger? Then well, no, I mean, well,
- 28:15whatever I mean, if if I'm charging during the day, yes,
- 28:18using the solar panels. But if I'm charging at night, it's using the
- 28:21grid. All right, good, all right, Well, we gotta take
- 28:23quick break. We come back. We're gonna find out about dji's big announcements.
- 28:26Sewan is all the info on that. We'll be back with more of
- 28:30tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm sean to Weird and I'm justin.
- 28:33Let me find us online at tech talk radio dot com. We'll be
- 28:37right back and now back to tech talk Radio. Out of all the technology
- 28:44companies that are out there, DJI is probably one of the ones that we
- 28:47talked about a lot on the show. Yeah, and with Wise and go
- 28:51Pro and a couple of the ones because I like cameras, right, So
- 28:55a couple of weeks ago on the show, Andy and I talked about dj
- 28:57I was teasing a new camera, so they finally released it. It is
- 29:03the DJI Osmo four. Now, a lot of people when they hear d
- 29:07g I right away they think drone and they don't know too much about the
- 29:14Osmo line, although it's been growing in popularity because they are gone, they
- 29:18have they're go Pro's biggest competitors. Do you have an Osmo I have.
- 29:22I have an Osmo pocket too, the Osmo Pocket, that's that's one that
- 29:26has the It actually has a it's got a gimbal on it a gimbal.
- 29:30Yeah. Right, So now this this Osmo four what is what is the
- 29:34coolest thing about this it's the price is cheaper than the new Go Pro.
- 29:41I believe it's four twenty nine, which is a little bit cheap. Actually
- 29:45it's it's actually it's actually quite a bit of a jump from their Osmo Action
- 29:49three. Uh. And I'm trying to get to the right page. So
- 29:53like I tell you more about the Well, I know that the newest Go
- 29:59Pro is three ninety nine, and I thought Dji was going to put the
- 30:03introductory price the same. Three nine. Yeah, four twenty nine, I
- 30:07believe is what the price is right now. If I ordered it now,
- 30:14it has it's got It uses a different mounting system than the Go Pro.
- 30:18It relies on a magnetic mounting systems. You can click them in much faster
- 30:22and a lot easier. And both Go Pro and the Awesomo the DGI have
- 30:29gone to a caseless waterproof system, so it's waterproof as is. You don't
- 30:34so you don't have to have that big white bark clear, you don't have
- 30:37to have a case, but you have to make sure all you know,
- 30:40you get all of these things have to be sealed and all that stuff.
- 30:42And one of the things that they did with this is they increased the sensor
- 30:48size. So they increased the sensor size, but they reduced the megapixel count.
- 30:55Okay, so you have a larger sensor with larger piel. Okay,
- 30:59what does that mean? No? Right, so sorry, you have a
- 31:03larger sensor, right, you can get more light. Okay, there's more
- 31:07light for the camera to capture, more space for the camera capture light.
- 31:14And then when the pixels are larger, they each individual pixel can capture more
- 31:18light. So it's more sensitive, so meaning you get better low light performance
- 31:22without added noise. Okay, so that's good for action environments underwater where you're
- 31:30it's you're just craving for more light. You get better results with a larger
- 31:37sensor. Sure, so it has a one and one point three inch sensor.
- 31:41And I'm trying to figure out what the go pro size was, and
- 31:45you mentioned the megapixel size on that. You know, megapi megapixel is so
- 31:52misunderstood because for a while. There are some you know, digital camera companies
- 31:59would put out this shoots eight megapixel, this shoots twelve, and so people
- 32:02would just go with oh, the bigger the better. Didn't realize it necessarily.
- 32:08Yeah, right. You ran into this issue with cell phones MHM,
- 32:15specifically the higher end cell phones you would get. These companies said are saying
- 32:21like, oh, our camera shoots forty eight point nine megapixels. Yeah,
- 32:25that's a lot of megapixels. Yeah, but your pixels are like tiny,
- 32:32so it doesn't matter. Yeah, because you're just getting I thought a pixel
- 32:38was defined. I thought a pixel you couldn't adjust the what a pixel means.
- 32:45No, Pixels are essentially a dot on a sensor that absorbs data.
- 32:50So the more dots you have so nineteen ten eighty whatever. But you can
- 32:57cram more pixels in, that is by making them smaller. So you do
- 33:02that, right, your your image becomes more clear because there's more to work
- 33:08with. But there's not enough smaller and there's not as much light going to
- 33:14each one. Each pixel doesn't get as much data because they're smaller. So
- 33:20if you increase the pixel size, you get more data per pixel that it
- 33:23can work with more color data, more light data, all that, and
- 33:29then you increase the sensor size. You can still get as many pixels in
- 33:32there, maybe a little less megapixel size than the Copro, but you just
- 33:37get better better, better light sensitivity, and a little bit better quality based
- 33:44on the size of the pixels. When you think about a shun. We
- 33:47had so many different drone manufacturers just about what five six years ago, maybe
- 33:52even a little longer, but you had so many and the one that always
- 33:55stood out though as being the best Dji, even when GoPro kind of entered
- 34:01the market to try and do you know their own drone. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:06you had. We can jump back a little bit, so I got
- 34:09into drones in around twenty eleven, two twelve when I really started getting into
- 34:14drones justin You were kind of there when news stations started using them and stuff.
- 34:19And then I respect to Michigan and actually bought one. And the big
- 34:23one was you had Dji. You had another company that started with an age,
- 34:30I can't remember it. It was another Chinese manufacturer that made drones and
- 34:32they were actually very popular. Also. Then you had one called three D
- 34:37Robotics. Oh yeah, I remember them now. Three D Robotics had it
- 34:42right. They built a drone and they stuffed a gimble on the front and
- 34:45said, hey, buy our drone, put your go prol on it.
- 34:49Yeah. Then go Pro said, yeah, we don't like that you guys
- 34:54are telling people to buy your drones, so we're gonna make our own drone
- 34:59instead. And if you don't know, GoPro made a drone. Yeah,
- 35:07it was. It was overly priced. It was expensive. I think it
- 35:10was like fourteen ninety nine or something. Didn't have a long flight time either.
- 35:15Uh, it had a miserable flight time of like eighteen to twenty minutes
- 35:19or something. Yeah, and you still have you still had to put your
- 35:25GoPro on it. So it had this cool feature. It was a cool
- 35:29feature, I'll tell you that. Right. So you had a gimball that
- 35:31you mounted your GoPro that you could use with your hand and then it flipped
- 35:36vertically and then or horizontally and then slid into the front of the drone and
- 35:39that was your gimbal. Yeah, and it SYNCD up with your GoPro and
- 35:43did all the stuff so you could use the remote and out of the box.
- 35:50I think it was like eighty to eighty five percent of the drones had
- 35:53battery failure. Kah, that's not a good thing. No, And the
- 36:00GoPro karma was wiped off the face of the planet. That's what's karma.
- 36:05It was called the karma. You cannot find information. It's it's almost impossible
- 36:07to find anything about it because it was such a bad product. Well because
- 36:13it was probably just rushed to the market. They were like, go,
- 36:15go, go, we gotta do this, we gotta do this. Now
- 36:17everybody was selling drones, so right, everybody was telling drunes that was the
- 36:21next big thing. Right, So I I told people you could probably find
- 36:28information about me saying this out there. Is go Pro was stupid not to
- 36:32buy three D Robotics. Yeah, they should have just said, you know
- 36:37what, we're gonna buy three D Robotics. Make it part of go pro,
- 36:39and they're gonna be our They're they're gonna be our drone arm are the
- 36:44arm of our business that makes drums. Yeah, better thing, three D
- 36:47Robotics. They fell off the face of the planet. Yeah. So now
- 36:52Dji comes along and they said, well, heck, you know, GoPro
- 36:58once kind of went into the market, so why can't DJI has some great
- 37:01optics on their cameras, So why not make an action camera with a gimbal
- 37:06that people can use and get some great resolution. I love my awesomele pocket
- 37:12too, Right, Yeah, it's a great Those those little pocket cameras are
- 37:16great if if you're on a trip and you want to just toss it in
- 37:21your pocket. Toss it in your backpack, doesn't take it out of space.
- 37:23You power it up. It's got a little screen on it. You
- 37:27start recording. It's gimbaled. It looks great. It's great for traveling.
- 37:31I should get one. I want one, right, I'm just haven't got
- 37:35one. Well, Sean, if you want to borrow mine, I'll mail
- 37:37it to you, all right, take it on trip. It's like,
- 37:42okay, yeah, I'll shoot all sorts of stuff with it. Yeah.
- 37:45But so you have to go back again and look at what defined an action
- 37:51camera. Right. Go Pro was the first one to really make an action
- 37:53camera, right, and then it was widely successful. They were used all
- 37:58over the place. But then you start getting cameras from Nikon, Kodak,
- 38:02Vivatar, Garmen, Vivatar. They all made these action cameras, but they
- 38:10couldn't compete at the price because you had these companies, these big camera companies
- 38:17Cannon, Sony, Nikon, that were like, we're not going to sacrifice
- 38:22image quality to get a small form factor quality piece of equipment. And you
- 38:30had all the industry, the action sports industry, the motorsports industry, and
- 38:34the film industry looking for how can we get this really cool shot of this
- 38:39car crash in this really tight spot. Well let's toss in a three hundred
- 38:44doper, but we don't care if it gets destroyed. Yep, we gives
- 38:50you a decent result. So you had all these camera companies that were so
- 38:54far behind the ball that tried to rush out action cameras that didn't go so
- 38:59well. Right, the Garment Verb, the Nikon, I don't remember.
- 39:02I don't remember the names of them. They were so far, so far
- 39:05back. But then it was just go Bro. Yeah, who who was
- 39:09the guy that made or who was the company that made Gobro? Wasn't it
- 39:13like a guy in a couple of his buddies that did this like the initial
- 39:17I don't remember the actually the guy's name, I'd have to look it up.
- 39:21But he wanted to make a risk mountable camera for surfing. Oh yeah,
- 39:27yeah, yeah, that's right, and he did that. It came
- 39:30up with something it ran on. You know, it was just really it's
- 39:35really rinky dink thing. It mounted your wrist. It was really big,
- 39:38and then it just kind of took off. I don't really know exactly how
- 39:40it got introduced, but he sold it. He sold it to another company
- 39:45then, right, that made it to the go Pro that we know now,
- 39:49No, it's he's he he During the break, I'll look it up
- 39:53and we'll come back to that. But it started with if you go back
- 39:57and look at the I keep saying go back, but it started with that
- 40:00camera. Then it was a the go Pro Hero. Yeah, actually it
- 40:06was just actually it was just the go Prop and I'll pull up. I
- 40:09have him sitting on the shelf behind. It was a tiny one ran on
- 40:14a full sized SD card, powered by three triple A batteries. Right.
- 40:20It had a a V output so you can still get a VY is shot
- 40:23four by three and recorded in uncompressed a VII, so the quality is not
- 40:30that great. Uh, but it worked and it recorded, and all of
- 40:36a sudden you got all of this amazing footage from all these places that nobody
- 40:39ever thought they were going to see all of a sudden, you were seeing
- 40:43remote skip. You know, you were seeing all this epic skiing footage and
- 40:45this BMX footage and dirt bike footage and water all of these extreme sports,
- 40:55but from the perspective of the user, and it like you were there,
- 41:00but you had what you had though in that early the early ones, that
- 41:04fish I, which bothered a lot of people, Yeah, you know,
- 41:07and that Yeah, that was the thing that they had to kind of adjust
- 41:10to to get people to be bored. Oh look at this, now I'm
- 41:15a part of it. Where it was fish I gave you that feeling you
- 41:17were a separate from it, right, So if you could go and look
- 41:22at the items that kind of have been the challenges for these companies, the
- 41:28flag the benchmarks of like what's the main competitive point? Okay, First it
- 41:34was size and portability. Okay, Then it was waterproofing, right yep.
- 41:42Then it was image quality and video size. Right. Then it was battery
- 41:47life because now you're increasing this the size of the videos you need the processing
- 41:52powers, your battery life is increasing. So you started seeing this trend of
- 41:57they were chasing each other down this path. So then we got into stabilization
- 42:01Yeah, so Dji had amazing stabilization in their drones and go Pro didn't have
- 42:08a great stabilization platform. Yeah, it was. It was all like after
- 42:13after effects, like after editing. Go Pro built there. I believe it's
- 42:19called hyper laps or hyper I don't remember what's called hyper or something a software
- 42:25based hype. It's called hyper smooth, I think. And it worked really
- 42:32really well, and it was done on camera, so you didn't have to
- 42:37post edit any of your footage, where as DJI had their stabilization platform already
- 42:44that was doing a great job hardware within hardware and actual optical stabilization. But
- 42:51then they had to flip it and compact it into an action camera. They
- 42:54had to build a whole software too. So we get into the story.
- 43:00We gotta take a quick break. But I want to know, in your
- 43:01opinion, Sean, better optics DJI or go Pro with this DJI because they
- 43:08partnered with known quality lensmakers and they did with their drills Possi blod Zeiss.
- 43:16Oh, they bought in and said we don't want to sacrifice quality for price.
- 43:23We'll be back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 43:27I'm Sean Deward and I'm justin let me send us a tweet on x at
- 43:31tech talk radio. We'll gray back now back to TikTok radio. We were
- 43:37talking about Dji and go Pro. I do have to tell you, and
- 43:42I showed it on television. The Acasso. Acasso was a kind of an
- 43:46offshoot brand of action camera. You can find them at Target, they're online.
- 43:52What they tout is an action kind of experience similar to what you would
- 43:58find with GoPro. Do not buy expecting to get the results of GoPro or
- 44:02DJI. I got a chance to test one out. A little clunky.
- 44:07It does have on screen. It is waterproof down to one hundred and thirty
- 44:10one feet. I try used the EK seven thousand, which is nice.
- 44:15They have a Brave model which even has better resolution. You can go up
- 44:20to to four K with this. You could do ten ADP, which is
- 44:23what I'd recommend. But the picture just wasn't that sharp and there were some
- 44:29sound issues that a lot of people were having. I got on one of
- 44:31the message boards on Facebook to see like some of the video that people were
- 44:37shooting with it, and it was okay again, but again for the price
- 44:40difference, we're talking eighty dollars. So if you know, if you've here's
- 44:45what I recommend and this this came from a listener. If you've got a
- 44:51child that wants an action camera, you don't have to go spend you know,
- 44:55four hundred dollars oh for their first camera for the first camera, Please
- 44:59don't. I would recommend this. Get the Picasso brand, you know as
- 45:04an offshoot brand, and let them play around with it, let them have
- 45:07fun with it, play with the mounts. There comes a bunch of amounts
- 45:09on him. I do like they didn't have these on the go Pro because
- 45:14well, with go Pro you don't change the battery out, you charge it
- 45:16and it's sealed. Now with that, you don't use that case. This
- 45:20one still uses that white kind of plexiglass case for it to be waterproof,
- 45:24and it's not sealed. You can actually pull the battery, put another battery
- 45:29in, and they give you two batteries in a charger. But that's the
- 45:31kind of thing you've got to give your kid. It's like getting a remote
- 45:35control car. You're not gonna go spend eight hundred dollars on a remote control
- 45:38car as their first remote control car. Get one for you know, forty
- 45:43fifty bucks for them to play with and see if they like it there,
- 45:46Like me, I just got one hundred and fifty dollars. One for Eric
- 45:50one hundred and fifty dollars or remote control car and he's never played with it.
- 45:52So yeah, well you're gonna say, shout no, there are great
- 45:58cheap options shine these knockoffs. Yeah, go pros like you can spend as
- 46:04little or as much as you want on an actual don't but don't expect you're
- 46:07gonna get the fewer dollars you spend, the worst the quality. Yeah,
- 46:15exactly, of course, Yeah, expect that. All right. So justin
- 46:20we were talking earlier about Balder's Gate, which is a video game, and
- 46:22a lot of people have been talking about tell us about this and you've got
- 46:27a chance to play it. Well, yeah, so the new one came
- 46:30out. It's Balder's Gate three. Uh. This is the first new release
- 46:34of this franchise for twenty two years. Wow that yeah, the last No,
- 46:42I'm sorry, twenty four years. The last one was in nineteen ninety
- 46:45nine. But it's it's basically it's basically Dungeons and Dragons in a video game
- 46:52format and when I talked about Dungeon Dragons. If you know what Dungeon Dragons
- 46:58is, it's like you know, paper and pen. You create a character,
- 47:00you roll a bunch of dice. Every time you want to do something,
- 47:04you gotta roll a dice to see if you succeed or not. This
- 47:08is literally that. Like, it is not a typical RPG game where you
- 47:14can just walk in there with your character and start bashing things around. No,
- 47:17you gotta plan your strategy. You got a party of four people with
- 47:22you. Each person has their you know, strengths. You got a rogue,
- 47:27a warlock, a barbarian, a bard, you know, and you
- 47:34got to plan your strategy. So you got to know what you're doing.
- 47:37But this game, when it came out Steam, you know, the big
- 47:43primary PC game conglomerate. I guess you could say they they expected five hundred
- 47:51thousand people to be playing the game. Okay, on launch weekend they got
- 47:57over nine hundred thousand people. This has quickly become the best and biggest game
- 48:02of twenty twenty three so far. This is the ad actually surpassed Diablo four.
- 48:08Diable of four is another huge franchise, yeah made by Blizzard, which
- 48:15and Sean has had a place a chance to play that too, right,
- 48:17Yeah, for I've probably put ten hours and yeah it's not good. Yeah,
- 48:24I I I beat the game. I beat Diabolo four. I mean
- 48:28I beat the campaign, which people say, oh, I wats you beat
- 48:31the campaign. That's when the real game starts and I'm like, yeah,
- 48:35no, I'm good. Yeah, but I beat Diablo four, But yeah,
- 48:39it's not that great. Balder's Gate, though, is different because it
- 48:45makes you, well, I should makes you think. It makes you rethink
- 48:49how you should play a game again. Like I said, going into a
- 48:52room with a bunch of goblins, you would think, oh, I'm just
- 48:55gonna send my barbarian and then smashed them all to pieces. No, because
- 49:00it's turn based. You got one turn per character. You gotta position your
- 49:06character, tell it what you want it to do. Now you gotta wait
- 49:09for the enemy to go and the enemy is gonna do their turn. It's
- 49:13like chess, right you think. I mean if you think Chess is a
- 49:15one player game where you could just be like, oh, move, move,
- 49:19move, move, move, checkmate, you're done. Well, that
- 49:21that's a typical RPG. No, this RPG is like Chess. You make
- 49:27one move, your enemy makes one move, and you've got to plan your
- 49:31strategy out. Okay, it's just like Dungeons and Dragons, but in a
- 49:37video game format. Now's yeah, No, it's not free fling the bags.
- 49:40Part about it is it's got one hundred and seventy five hours of cut
- 49:46scenes recorded like full full on movie rendition cut scenes, CGI animated everything.
- 49:59So it is a really really really good game. Awesome. Uh where can
- 50:05I listeners find that? Uh? Well, Baldi's Gate three right now is
- 50:08on PlayStation five and Steam for PC, and right now it is the second
- 50:14most played game on Steam? Is it early? Five hundred and eighty five
- 50:17thousand, five hundred and eighty six players playing Baldris Gates. I'm gonna did
- 50:22you give that a shot? I don't think what's the number one game?
- 50:24Yeah? What is Counterstrike? Go? I've ever heard of that one?
- 50:29No? I want to you know, I built, I built, I
- 50:31got a new graphics card, so now I got But I will I need
- 50:35an intense graphics card to play this one? Oh god, yes, yeah,
- 50:37so I got that new lattome. Go go ahead, Sean. I
- 50:42was say, you definitely need a decent system to play it. I was,
- 50:45well, Justin's talking, I'll look up with the with the base.
- 50:47So I got that new laptop that I used for work, right, but
- 50:51I also used it on my personal time. I used it for a gaming
- 50:52computer. This just got a I nine processor. I told you about it
- 50:58before nine th gen processors got sixty four gigs of RAMP. It's got an
- 51:02Nvidio RTX thirty seventy t I and when I play that game, those fans
- 51:09are going at full blast. I mean that laptop is I mean it is
- 51:16hot. The bare minimum or bather skate three sixty four bit broncessor Windows ten
- 51:27until five four gen and d FX eighty three hundred all right, eight gigs
- 51:32of RAM graphics card. They're saying a nine seventy will run it or r
- 51:39X four eighty. And you need one hundred and fifty gigs of space.
- 51:45Man, I remember you could play a game with ten megabytes of space.
- 51:49Yeah no, this game. But well, because you think about one hundred
- 51:51and one hundred hours or whatever of cut scenes, one hundred and seventy five
- 51:54hours of cut scenes, Yeah, it takes a lot of space. So
- 51:58the recommended specs were Balder's Gate three, Windows ten, Into seven, eighth,
- 52:05Gen m D Rising five thirty six hundred sixteen gigs RAM gt X twenty
- 52:13sixty right or am d r X fifty seven hundred and one. Wow,
- 52:20amazing they should why why are they even recommending like the recommended They should be
- 52:24like, just just empty your bank account, like seriously, just empty your
- 52:30max out your credit cards, money to sell your house. Take just just
- 52:35just everything you got put into this game, because that's what's gonna take.
- 52:38Taking a quick break, Justin has a really cool game that we can all
- 52:43play online and it's free. So again we're gonna find out all about that.
