- 2:53Speaker 2: hook you up. All right, y'all, We got aj Murphy
- 2:56Speaker 2: from ten thousand takes State of Skull, real good conversation.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We delved into the Timberwolves, the new ownership there. We
- 3:06Speaker 2: obviously jumped on the vikings and the offseason and some
- 3:10Speaker 2: things that they may need to do. But before we
- 3:13Speaker 2: get into that interview here and that's about thirty minutes long,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I wanted to touch on one thing here, and it
- 3:20Speaker 2: really hit me was there's a lot of talk at
- 3:23Speaker 2: the University of Minnesota about either tearing down Williams Arena,
- 3:28Speaker 2: building new, remodeling Williams Arena, whatever it is, or with
- 3:37Speaker 2: the new ownership of the Timberwolves, let's say they get
- 3:39Speaker 2: a new arena downtown, do you move the Gophers in there.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I don't see that working, because you know, from the
- 3:46Speaker 2: Timberwolves point of view, they're not building an arena to
- 3:49Speaker 2: share it with another entity at all. So I don't
- 3:53Speaker 2: see that happening. But I do see either remodel happening
- 3:58Speaker 2: on campus or there are reports as well. I heard
- 4:01Speaker 2: from Guardsy when I was listening to Kfan and him
- 4:04Speaker 2: and Dan Barrero were talking about this. And by the way,
- 4:07Speaker 2: if you go back a few days they had the
- 4:10Speaker 2: first hour of Dan Barrero show, he spent on this
- 4:14Speaker 2: topic as well. And that's what got me thinking about
- 4:17Speaker 2: it actually, and also my recent visit over there. I
- 4:22Speaker 2: haven't been over to a Gopher game. Last year. I
- 4:26Speaker 2: was cut the games I went to. I was covering
- 4:28Speaker 2: for gopherhole dot com. So I was sitting up in
- 4:30Speaker 2: the press area and I had a friend of mine
- 4:34Speaker 2: who won tickets from his job company works aut And
- 4:43Speaker 2: I mean, best seats out there, eleventh row, dead center court.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I mean my seat was right on the half court line.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You know, this is the seat you want for a
- 4:55Speaker 2: basketball game. And I couldn't believe how small these seats
- 5:02Speaker 2: are to begin with. I mean, I'm looks, I'm a
- 5:04Speaker 2: big guy. I'm six four, six ' five. You know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm a big, bulky dude. I get that, But man,
- 5:11Speaker 2: I've had people that have, you know, that are basically
- 5:14Speaker 2: six feet tell me that you know, the leg room's tight,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and God forbid that if you are a bigger dude,
- 5:21Speaker 2: you know, scrunching into those seats to begin with is ridiculous.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So what I would like to see from the Golden
- 5:28Speaker 2: Golphers is some type of remodel or new arena with
- 5:36Speaker 2: a reduced capacity. I think you got to realize we're
- 5:39Speaker 2: in a new day and age that the you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Minnesota doesn't really need a fourteen thousand, five hundred seed
- 5:49Speaker 2: arena that technically Williams Arena is right now. You know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: this arena, the seating is so bad. Those prime seats,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, the seats, the actual seats, not the benches
- 6:04Speaker 2: that we gave up prime mid court seats at halftime
- 6:08Speaker 2: because we couldn't move and I mean could not move
- 6:12Speaker 2: once you sat down. You know, it took forever just
- 6:16Speaker 2: to move your knees, maybe an inch or two. Just
- 6:19Speaker 2: it was ridiculous. So we went and sat in some
- 6:23Speaker 2: bench seating after, you know, at halftime. You know, so
- 6:30Speaker 2: I don't know who designed this current Williams Arena, but
- 6:33Speaker 2: they did a horrible job. Those seats are ridiculous, and
- 6:37Speaker 2: you're you know, you're bringing in alumni. I don't know
- 6:39Speaker 2: how these tall basketball players sit down there. I mean,
- 6:45Speaker 2: it is nuts. So I'm all for either a new
- 6:49Speaker 2: Williams Arena or whatever. It may not even be called
- 6:52Speaker 2: Williams Arena. Who knows it remodeled with reduced capacity so
- 6:58Speaker 2: we have much more comfortable and we go from there.
- 7:04Speaker 2: But I think, you know, in this day and age,
- 7:06Speaker 2: we just got to realize that the Gopher basketball program
- 7:09Speaker 2: is in a different position. Obviously, we talk about Saint
- 7:13Speaker 2: Thomas and what they're doing and their Division one status,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and you know, they're just literally a ten minute drive
- 7:20Speaker 2: from the campus of the University of Minnesota. So will
- 7:24Speaker 2: they finally start playing here in the future, I don't know.
- 7:29Speaker 2: But in terms of arenas, because again the Saint Thomas
- 7:33Speaker 2: has a new arena coming online here later this year,
- 7:38Speaker 2: Gophers got to figure something out, man, because it is
- 7:42Speaker 2: as I heard on a few other radio stations and podcasts,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and I didn't think about this, but it is very
- 7:49Speaker 2: hard to go to a Gopher game, and when your
- 7:53Speaker 2: fan base is older folks to begin with, it's doubly hard.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And again, I am vns Right, host of the Sports
- 8:01Speaker 2: num Right podcast. You know you're asking people the closest
- 8:06Speaker 2: parking is reserved for season ticket holders, of which there
- 8:09Speaker 2: aren't a lot. So the parking ramp right across the
- 8:13Speaker 2: street from the arena. Yeah, you gotta have a parking
- 8:17Speaker 2: pass to park right outside the arena. Gotta have a
- 8:20Speaker 2: parking pass. They make it so hard and make people
- 8:23Speaker 2: park blocks away in the winter to walk to an
- 8:27Speaker 2: arena to watch a you know, mediocre at best product,
- 8:32Speaker 2: And that's just not good so Athletic Department, the administration
- 8:38Speaker 2: over there, University of Minnesota, border regents, everybody's got stuff
- 8:42Speaker 2: to figure out because the current state of getting to
- 8:47Speaker 2: a go for basketball game just ain't happening either. And
- 8:50Speaker 2: people go, well, sports gov winning cures everything. And I
- 8:54Speaker 2: get it. I've been fortunate enough to see go for
- 8:58Speaker 2: basketball teams that have that arena, and I get it.
- 9:01Speaker 2: When the place is filled and the place is rocking,
- 9:05Speaker 2: sure the magic happens, and honestly that's when it becomes
- 9:09Speaker 2: a top five arena. But I just think that in
- 9:12Speaker 2: terms of comfort and you know, new bells and whistles,
- 9:16Speaker 2: it's time. So that's what I got to say about that.
- 9:21Speaker 2: It's time Golden Gophers make it happen new Williams Arena,
- 9:26Speaker 2: whether it's a completely new building or like I said,
- 9:30Speaker 2: remodeled to just make it more comfortable with more bells
- 9:34Speaker 2: and whistles, getting rid of troughs in the bathroom. And
- 9:38Speaker 2: I get it, a events, it was built in you know,
- 9:40Speaker 2: almost one hundred years ago. Yeah, but you know, update
- 9:44Speaker 2: the trops. That's what I'm saying. All right, quick commercial
- 9:48Speaker 2: break here in the Sports Don't Right podcast. Then we
- 9:50Speaker 2: are back with our interview, we are going to be
- 9:52Speaker 2: talking sports with aj from ten thousand takes our friends
- 9:56Speaker 2: over there at Minnesota's favorite sports media company. I'll be
- 10:00Speaker 2: right back. I am Vince Right, sports Governor. This is
- 10:03Speaker 2: sports done right.

- 11:09Speaker 5: Get you some.
- 11:16Speaker 2: All right, everybody events right, Sports Governor, Sports Don't Write podcast,
- 11:20Speaker 2: And it is my honor to be joined by mister
- 11:24Speaker 2: AJ himself. You can find him at AJ Murphy seven
- 11:29Speaker 2: six three on Twitter. He also does some work with
- 11:34Speaker 2: State of Skull over there at TENK and our friends
- 11:37Speaker 2: over there. So first off, AJ, thank you for making
- 11:40Speaker 2: your debut and joining us here on Sports Done right.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Of course, Man, glad to be on the show. Finally,
- 11:46Speaker 5: it's been s been a long time coming, but.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah it has, man, it has. So let's get to it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Man.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So before we get into the vikings, I want to
- 11:55Speaker 2: talk about our Minnesota Timberwolves. We got some new owners
- 12:00Speaker 2: in the mix with the decision that came down last
- 12:03Speaker 2: week finally from the arbitration folks, Mark Lourie a Rod officially,
- 12:09Speaker 2: well I shouldn't say officially just yet, right, Yeah, a
- 12:15Speaker 2: little bit pumped the breaks Minnesota sports Man. Nothing can
- 12:18Speaker 2: ever just you know, be straight and whatnot. But as
- 12:21Speaker 2: AJ says, people, it has to go through the vote
- 12:25Speaker 2: of the Board of Governors and Glenn Taylor. You know,
- 12:29Speaker 2: let's not be you know, stupid here. He has a
- 12:31Speaker 2: lot of friends on those you know, in that board.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So who knows, does he have enough sway? Does he
- 12:38Speaker 2: want them to pull a power trip, so to speak,
- 12:41Speaker 2: and try and put a little break on this sale.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Who knows? But aj just give me your thoughts initially
- 12:48Speaker 2: on the new ownership and what you think it may
- 12:50Speaker 2: mean for the Timberwolves.
- 12:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean it means a ton You know, Glenn
- 12:56Speaker 8: Taylor has brought this franchise to what it is right now,
- 13:00Speaker 8: but in his thirty year tenure, I mean only two
- 13:04Speaker 8: seasons with a playoff win or a playoff series win.
- 13:07Speaker 5: That's that's pretty bad, right.
- 13:09Speaker 8: So when you look at, you know, the totality of
- 13:11Speaker 8: the history of his work, you know, it's kind of
- 13:13Speaker 8: time to move on in getting splashy owners like a
- 13:17Speaker 8: Rod and Mark Laurie. Uh is just insane for the team.
- 13:21Speaker 8: And it's what this team needs around Anthony Edwards and
- 13:25Speaker 8: really what this whole this whole city and the whole
- 13:27Speaker 8: Timberwolves hepe machine is like, you know, ever since they've
- 13:31Speaker 8: come back into prominence, you know, the last two or
- 13:33Speaker 8: three years, SAW has been about you know, Wolves back.
- 13:36Speaker 8: You know, you hear people say that all the time,
- 13:38Speaker 8: Wolve's back, Wolve's back. Well, this is this is the
- 13:41Speaker 8: final stamp on it. So you know, there's a lot
- 13:44Speaker 8: of things that go with it.
- 13:45Speaker 7: You know.
- 13:46Speaker 5: One of the things that's come about is a new arena.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Uh.
- 13:50Speaker 8: I have no idea how that's gonna work, but that's
- 13:52Speaker 8: something that's super exciting because you know, Target Center, they've
- 13:55Speaker 8: they've touched it up a little bit, but it's it's
- 13:57Speaker 8: kind of still ugly duckling. So I'm excited to see
- 14:01Speaker 8: what they can do. But you know, we still gotta
- 14:03Speaker 8: wait until it's officially official.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Right exactly. And that's the thing, man. So assuming everything
- 14:10Speaker 2: goes according to plan, which I think it will, let's
- 14:14Speaker 2: talk about that new arena because that's gonna be kind
- 14:17Speaker 2: of first and foremost Target Center. Yeah, they did some
- 14:21Speaker 2: touch ups, like you said, but it's still lacking, and
- 14:26Speaker 2: you know, I've kind of you know, I've talked with
- 14:28Speaker 2: some people who are like, you know, downtown business interests
- 14:32Speaker 2: are gonna be hardcore to keep it downtown. I understand that,
- 14:35Speaker 2: but if you can maybe bring it out to one
- 14:37Speaker 2: of the suburbs. I know there's been some talk about
- 14:39Speaker 2: a spot over an Egan kind of doing doing what
- 14:43Speaker 2: the Vikings are doing with their headquarters, or maybe even
- 14:46Speaker 2: making it part of the land over there. You know,
- 14:49Speaker 2: they've already kind of got a basic intrastructure and can
- 14:53Speaker 2: maybe do something with the parking. But do you think
- 14:56Speaker 2: that the our vikingscuse me, Timberwolves will ever play the
- 15:00Speaker 2: suburbs as opposed to downtown AJ.
- 15:04Speaker 8: You know what I think about it, I just don't
- 15:08Speaker 8: see it in It's one thing to compare you know,
- 15:12Speaker 8: football stadiums versus basketball teams, because you know, football, you
- 15:16Speaker 8: have such this big footprint. The stadium is that much bigger,
- 15:19Speaker 8: So it kind of makes sense to put it in
- 15:22Speaker 8: you know, a quote unquote suburban area, right. You know,
- 15:25Speaker 8: there's all that footprint and you can build a massive
- 15:28Speaker 8: parking lot, you can build you know, shops and movie
- 15:31Speaker 8: theaters and restaurants and blah blah blah whatever. But when
- 15:35Speaker 8: you look at the NBA, it's always kind of like
- 15:37Speaker 8: in you know, an area, you know, a downtown. So
- 15:41Speaker 8: I think the Timberwolves hoop for them to jump over
- 15:45Speaker 8: right now is how are they going to because I
- 15:49Speaker 8: think they benefit from me being downtown. I've also seen
- 15:52Speaker 8: something where it would be, you know, if they kept
- 15:54Speaker 8: it in Minneapolis, their reredom would go over by the
- 15:57Speaker 8: Farmers Market, which is kind of a weird area in
- 16:00Speaker 8: sketchy area. I'm always saying that because I got my
- 16:03Speaker 8: car broken into there when I was here.
- 16:06Speaker 5: But whatever, not that I mean to laugh at you, brother,
- 16:09Speaker 5: but I get what you're saying.
- 16:10Speaker 8: I get what you're saying, just my unbiased opinion, but
- 16:14Speaker 8: I just feel like that's that's an interesting area, Like
- 16:17Speaker 8: there's not really anything around there. There doesn't really see
- 16:22Speaker 8: like you could probably build, you know, enough parking lot infrastructure.
- 16:25Speaker 8: But again, it's kind of a sketchy area, away from everything,
- 16:28Speaker 8: away from North Loop, away from all the good stuff.
- 16:31Speaker 8: So that's definitely a hoop that they're gonna have to
- 16:34Speaker 8: climb over. But I think they'll be able to get
- 16:36Speaker 8: it done. And it sounds like it's gonna be privately funded,
- 16:39Speaker 8: so I mean, the the getting a money part probably
- 16:42Speaker 8: isn't gonna be a problem, which people in Henimon County
- 16:45Speaker 8: love to hear because that's always.
- 16:46Speaker 2: As yeah, exactly, because you know, I mean, the city council,
- 16:50Speaker 2: and you know, there's no way in hell I can
- 16:52Speaker 2: see them giving money or at least substantial money uh
- 16:57Speaker 2: to uh for a new arena there the way that
- 16:59Speaker 2: they're looking. And then, like you said, I mean, you
- 17:03Speaker 2: know that area is interesting over there because you know,
- 17:06Speaker 2: it's kind of it is. It's sketchy Bardline over on
- 17:10Speaker 2: the north side over there, and honestly not the easiest
- 17:14Speaker 2: to kind of navigate too because they do have some
- 17:17Speaker 2: new apartment buildings over there, so there's less of a
- 17:21Speaker 2: blueprint to work with or a footprint to work with
- 17:24Speaker 2: over there. Then you know, maybe there was just you know,
- 17:27Speaker 2: a year and a half ago. So I think if
- 17:29Speaker 2: it is downtown, they're gonna keep it, you know where
- 17:31Speaker 2: it is. You know, maybe they put them in US Bank,
- 17:35Speaker 2: move them over to Excel to play for a year
- 17:36Speaker 2: or two while you know it gets built. But yeah, man,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I agree with you. Sorry to hear about your car
- 17:42Speaker 2: getting jacked over there.
- 17:44Speaker 8: Hey, I had it coming putting my backpack in my
- 17:47Speaker 8: back seat in Minneapolis, Like, yeah, yeah, you get what
- 17:49Speaker 8: you deserve.
- 17:50Speaker 5: I guess come on, AJ, you know I guess I don't.
- 17:55Speaker 2: All right, folks, AJ joining us here, stay to school
- 17:58Speaker 2: ten thousand takes. We are talking about the Timberwolves new owners,
- 18:02Speaker 2: Mark Laurie A Rod. I don't want to bash on
- 18:06Speaker 2: Glenn Taylor, because you know, he did save the franchise.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we gotta give him perhaps for that.
- 18:13Speaker 2: You know, this team would not have been in Minnesota
- 18:15Speaker 2: if it was not for him, So you know, definitely
- 18:19Speaker 2: props to him for doing that. But like you were
- 18:21Speaker 2: saying earlier, a mediocre run. You know, obviously you got
- 18:26Speaker 2: Cage in the early part of it. But outside of that, man,
- 18:30Speaker 2: a lot of just very bad basketball. So I am
- 18:35Speaker 2: glad his tenure is done. He's in his eighties now,
- 18:39Speaker 2: he has health problems, and you know, I personally, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 2: it's just like, hey, why don't you just go enjoy
- 18:45Speaker 2: you know, those billions dollars that you've made in your
- 18:48Speaker 2: life and then you know, enjoy the family. But like
- 18:51Speaker 2: you were saying, man, I'm very excited for a Rod
- 18:53Speaker 2: and Marklorie. I think they're exactly who we need because
- 18:57Speaker 2: at first off, if they can do like you said,
- 18:59Speaker 2: that privately funded arena, then yeah, that's a dune deal
- 19:03Speaker 2: because it's privately funded. But you know, they'll probably need
- 19:07Speaker 2: some some tax breaks, some work with you know, the
- 19:09Speaker 2: infrastructure around the place, and you know that's where the
- 19:12Speaker 2: city comes in stayed all that stuff. So at least
- 19:15Speaker 2: kind of some new owners. A Rod brings celebrity pizazz.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Whether you love them or hate them from his baseball days, you.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Know, it is what it is.
- 19:25Speaker 2: So I'm excited to man, and I think this is
- 19:28Speaker 2: nothing but good news for the Minnesota Timberwolves. So very
- 19:31Speaker 2: excited and we will see what happens there. Your thoughts
- 19:35Speaker 2: real quick before we get into the vikings on just
- 19:38Speaker 2: the Timberwolves this year. You know, we got a couple
- 19:40Speaker 2: of new players and right now seventh place, fourteen games
- 19:45Speaker 2: out of first place. I don't think we were really
- 19:47Speaker 2: expecting that, But here we are Timberwolves looking at the
- 19:50Speaker 2: play in game again.
- 19:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I think they really just kind of have to
- 19:55Speaker 8: tread water and just do what they can with the bench.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Union and tel Dante de Vincenzo and Julius Randall find
- 20:02Speaker 8: the way back into the lineup. It seemed like he
- 20:05Speaker 8: was kind of starting to come together, especially more so
- 20:08Speaker 8: with Randall before he got hurt. And you know, I
- 20:13Speaker 8: say what you want about the whole cat trade. It
- 20:15Speaker 8: kind of needed to happen as much as you know
- 20:18Speaker 8: last if you go back your calendar year, everyone was like, oh,
- 20:21Speaker 8: we need a trade cap, blah blah blah blah. It was,
- 20:23Speaker 8: you know, everyone was knocking on the wood, you know,
- 20:26Speaker 8: all this stuff. And then we kind of got through
- 20:27Speaker 8: the year and we were like, Okay, well maybe this
- 20:29Speaker 8: can work. And everyone kind of convinced themselves that, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 8: this whole thing with Kat and Ant both on the team,
- 20:34Speaker 8: especially with Rudy and all the spacing and all the
- 20:37Speaker 8: issues could work. And then they decided to ship him out.
- 20:40Speaker 8: And I think it was just a shock for everybody,
- 20:42Speaker 8: including Julius Randall.
- 20:44Speaker 5: He kind of saw it.
- 20:45Speaker 8: You know, he maybe had to warm up to the
- 20:47Speaker 8: team a little bit and find his groove, and I
- 20:49Speaker 8: think he was starting to before he got hurt. So yeah,
- 20:53Speaker 8: it's just about getting those guys back in the lineup
- 20:55Speaker 8: treading water. I mean, you look at you know, the
- 20:58Speaker 8: last two games before the start break, losing to the
- 21:01Speaker 8: Bucks shorthanded, no dame no. I was at that game
- 21:05Speaker 8: that sucked, and then the next night beating the number
- 21:10Speaker 8: one seed in the West, the OKC thunder who have
- 21:13Speaker 8: had our number. They destroyed us pretty well the first
- 21:16Speaker 8: time around, so now we've got to come out to
- 21:18Speaker 8: break and see them, you know, a couple more times.
- 21:20Speaker 8: The February schedule was pretty tough, but I think if
- 21:22Speaker 8: they can treadwater win enough games to get to March
- 21:26Speaker 8: and just really kind of get everyone back and get
- 21:28Speaker 8: the chemistry going, I think it's I think it's gonna
- 21:30Speaker 8: be good. I think they could definitely find themselves in
- 21:33Speaker 8: the top six and hopefully not find themselves in the plane.
- 21:36Speaker 5: That's my prediction. But I'm I'm gonna say anywhere from
- 21:39Speaker 5: like that four to six seed.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Range, right, And yeah, I mean, you know, that's what
- 21:43Speaker 2: I was hoping for too. I'm realistically, I'm hoping from
- 21:46Speaker 2: like third to fifth, if they can just kind of
- 21:48Speaker 2: find a way, like you said, when these guys get back,
- 21:52Speaker 2: Randall was hopefully finally, like you said, starting to kind
- 21:56Speaker 2: of fit in, because everybody was really starting to question
- 21:59Speaker 2: the trade in terms of the Randall selection, the Vincenzo
- 22:03Speaker 2: obviously the sharp shooter from the outside. So if we
- 22:07Speaker 2: can get these guys back and you know, just like
- 22:10Speaker 2: you said, tread water and just kind of build on
- 22:12Speaker 2: that and just my goal for them. Honestly, AJ is
- 22:16Speaker 2: to finish in the top five and just kind of
- 22:18Speaker 2: go from there. I'm not so much concerned anymore. I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 2: home court is great, obviously, but I think we've seen
- 22:26Speaker 2: enough recently. You know that, you know, teams are able
- 22:29Speaker 2: to win on the road here and there as well,
- 22:31Speaker 2: So you know my opinion, better teams always are are
- 22:35Speaker 2: going to win in general. So hopefully our Wolves will
- 22:39Speaker 2: be one of those teams. Man. So let's do this,
- 22:44Speaker 2: folks again. We got AJ as you see on our
- 22:46Speaker 2: screen here AJ Murphy seven six three on Twitter. Let's
- 22:52Speaker 2: talk about these Minnesota Vikings because I want to give
- 22:54Speaker 2: them the kind of the majority of the time while
- 22:56Speaker 2: we got you here, man, So you saw what happened
- 23:00Speaker 2: at the end of the season. Sam Darnald kind of
- 23:06Speaker 2: regressed when we did not need him to regress. Season
- 23:11Speaker 2: comes to an end, Okay, So now it's hit Man
- 23:14Speaker 2: Harry all intense purposes. He's gonna be done. So we're
- 23:18Speaker 2: gonna have some new faces and the defense. I hear you, man,
- 23:22Speaker 2: I hear you, hit Man. Hit Man was my dude,
- 23:25Speaker 2: and you can talk about him in a second, but
- 23:28Speaker 2: you know, just give us your thoughts kind of the
- 23:31Speaker 2: end of the season, what you saw in those last
- 23:33Speaker 2: few games and into the playoffs, and did you see
- 23:37Speaker 2: maybe the regression happening because a lot of folks were worried,
- 23:42Speaker 2: I think, just kind of being Minnesota sports fans in general,
- 23:45Speaker 2: it's like, oh my god, the playoffs, We're gonna lose,
- 23:47Speaker 2: and blah blah blah. Obviously that's what happens. So AJ
- 23:50Speaker 2: give us your thoughts on that end of the season
- 23:52Speaker 2: for the Purple.
- 23:54Speaker 8: You know, it's really sickening when you kind of take
- 23:57Speaker 8: a step back and look at the whole picture. You
- 24:00Speaker 8: bring in Sam Donald at the beginning of the season,
- 24:04Speaker 8: like we're at stay to school. We had no idea
- 24:07Speaker 8: and I think a lot of Vikings fans really had
- 24:10Speaker 8: no idea how the whole thing was gonna go with
- 24:12Speaker 8: Sam Darnald and the fact that he came in and
- 24:15Speaker 8: bought out, especially in that first month, and just really
- 24:19Speaker 8: like whoa like I mean, it was. It was an
- 24:21Speaker 8: amazing season. It was a really fun season. It was
- 24:23Speaker 8: an awesome season. We got what we needed out of
- 24:28Speaker 8: Sam Donald. We mailed to that for all it was worth. Unfortunately,
- 24:32Speaker 8: it just came crashing down the hard part about it
- 24:36Speaker 8: is kind of the two pieces put together. So, you know,
- 24:39Speaker 8: aside from the Jacksonville game, up to that point, we
- 24:42Speaker 8: hadn't really seen Sam Donald struggle or do bad. So
- 24:46Speaker 8: I think people would kind of, maybe myself, convinced themselves
- 24:50Speaker 8: that that wasn't going to happen and that he'd be fine.
- 24:53Speaker 5: And then you take you know, the vikings part of it.
- 24:55Speaker 8: You know, oh primetime, Oh playoffs, they show up their purple.
- 25:00Speaker 8: I've had to hear all the insults from my dad,
- 25:02Speaker 8: who's a Packers fan, blah blah blah.
- 25:04Speaker 5: I get I have thick skin.
- 25:06Speaker 8: I don't care, you know, because I don't play on
- 25:09Speaker 8: the team, But just to see it go down the
- 25:11Speaker 8: way that it did in prime time, you know, Sam
- 25:14Speaker 8: couldn't do anything, and when you watch the games, you
- 25:19Speaker 8: kind of come away from me and you're like, Okay,
- 25:21Speaker 8: who can we blame?
- 25:23Speaker 5: It was all him?
- 25:25Speaker 8: Like wide receivers were getting wide open, the play calls
- 25:28Speaker 8: were there, but Sam just wasn't. But also I think
- 25:33Speaker 8: part of it too, and this kind of goes into
- 25:35Speaker 8: a problem that I've had with KOC and it's really
- 25:38Speaker 8: the only problem that I've had is that the run
- 25:40Speaker 8: game is not consistent. That took a big step this
- 25:45Speaker 8: year with Aaron Jones. He was fantastic again, much like
- 25:49Speaker 8: Sam Donald, I think he did a lot better for
- 25:51Speaker 8: the Vikings than a lot of fans expected him to.
- 25:54Speaker 8: But there was some moments where you're like, you see
- 25:56Speaker 8: him on the sideline, He's like, he's got the helmet off,
- 25:59Speaker 8: he's touching at the hammy, like, what's going on here?
- 26:03Speaker 8: And the backups you know, cam Akers got blessed Ty Chandler.
- 26:07Speaker 8: They just couldn't get it done. So I think the
- 26:10Speaker 8: lack of a regular run game is what hurts this
- 26:13Speaker 8: team and what needs to be worked on moving forward,
- 26:15Speaker 8: along with the trenches.
- 26:16Speaker 5: But you know Sam Donald crashing and burning, that really sucked.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, exactly, And that goes to the trenches
- 26:23Speaker 2: because that was kind of my next question. The offensive line,
- 26:27Speaker 2: on which obviously, for again the majority of the season,
- 26:30Speaker 2: like the rest of the team, played very well. I
- 26:34Speaker 2: think they played, you know, above what a lot of
- 26:36Speaker 2: people were gonna give them credit for. And then yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 2: these last couple of games going into the playoffs, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 2: Sam Donald was getting sacked for a reason. You know,
- 26:47Speaker 2: a big chunk of it. Sam Donald of course, but
- 26:51Speaker 2: you know, some of this offensive line just went a
- 26:54Speaker 2: wall as well. And then obviously you know the Ram
- 26:56Speaker 2: game and everything, But man, what do we gotta do
- 27:00Speaker 2: You talk about consistency with the running game. I want
- 27:03Speaker 2: more consistency with the offensive line. So do we hit
- 27:07Speaker 2: it hard in the draft this year? What do we
- 27:10Speaker 2: do sat look for some you know, the worthy free
- 27:13Speaker 2: agents or maybe a mixture of both.
- 27:16Speaker 5: You know, I think at this point you really got
- 27:19Speaker 5: to hit it in free agency.
- 27:21Speaker 8: Yeah, and that's not a knock on Quezy, but we've
- 27:24Speaker 8: been I feel like we've had this problem for like
- 27:26Speaker 8: a really long time where interior offensive lineman has been
- 27:30Speaker 8: a massive struggle. Now there's you know, there's not any
- 27:34Speaker 8: you know, world beaters this year in the free agency class,
- 27:36Speaker 8: but there's enough guys out there where if you give
- 27:38Speaker 8: him a pretty penny, they can help you out and
- 27:40Speaker 8: make a big difference. You know, we talk about Trey Smith,
- 27:43Speaker 8: Will Fryes, guys like that that can come in play
- 27:46Speaker 8: the guard position in be nasty like Dalt Reisner did
- 27:49Speaker 8: what he could.
- 27:50Speaker 5: I think he was solid. And then ed Ingram yeah yeah,
- 27:55Speaker 5: and then everyone knows Garrett Bradberry, but he's you.
- 27:57Speaker 8: Know, he's had his upside downs, undersize of the center whatever.
- 28:02Speaker 8: We could probably do without him too, to be honest,
- 28:04Speaker 8: but you know, when you have, you know, great tackles
- 28:07Speaker 8: at the end and then bullshit in the middle, it
- 28:09Speaker 8: kind of just all equals to mid. So I think
- 28:12Speaker 8: they really got to try and hit it in free
- 28:14Speaker 8: agency just because of the fact that you know, getting
- 28:17Speaker 8: it in the draft getting it right is really hard,
- 28:20Speaker 8: and that's something that you know, the Vikings just haven't
- 28:23Speaker 8: been able to do. So I feel like, you know,
- 28:26Speaker 8: you got to put your money where your mouth is,
- 28:28Speaker 8: putting it towards the trenches and see what happens.
- 28:31Speaker 2: No, I totally agree with you. I think if you
- 28:36Speaker 2: do hit it hard in free agency and just kind
- 28:38Speaker 2: of get that message out there that the time is
- 28:40Speaker 2: now because it is, which leads me into obviously the
- 28:44Speaker 2: big question in terms of quarterback. If you're gonna invest
- 28:48Speaker 2: in the offensive line, are we gonna keep Sam Darnold? Aja?
- 28:51Speaker 2: Are we gonna go with the rookie? Does somehow Daniel
- 28:56Speaker 2: Jones work his way into this conversation what's happening man?
- 29:01Speaker 2: Because it is starting to get it's starting to get
- 29:03Speaker 2: real interesting with this Vikings quarterback talk, because for a
- 29:07Speaker 2: quick minute, it was like, you know, obviously right after season, man,
- 29:11Speaker 2: I think we got to get rid of Donald. It
- 29:13Speaker 2: was a nice little run, but you know, we got
- 29:15Speaker 2: jj blah blah blah blah blah. Then all of a sudden,
- 29:19Speaker 2: Daniel Jones's name pops out of nowhere as he works
- 29:22Speaker 2: his way off to practice squad into the number two position.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And now, I mean there's a few people out there.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I'm mean, not the sports governor, there are a few
- 29:33Speaker 2: people out there that are throwing mister Jones's name into
- 29:37Speaker 2: this mix all of a sudden, at least to get
- 29:40Speaker 2: a fair shot AT's starting. So listen, you're the expert, bro,
- 29:45Speaker 2: Let's hear what you got to say. AJ talk to
- 29:47Speaker 2: us about these Vikings quarterbacks.
- 29:50Speaker 8: I mean, I think it really comes down to this
- 29:52Speaker 8: is what the Vikings have been building towards having a
- 29:55Speaker 8: rookie quarterback on a rookie deal to you know, you
- 29:58Speaker 8: build the super team around him and then you go
- 30:01Speaker 8: you let it run. And that's honestly, the ultimate hack
- 30:04Speaker 8: to winning the Super Bowl is you build a team
- 30:07Speaker 8: around a quarterback on a rookie contract and you'll let
- 30:10Speaker 8: the thing fly, So I think that's what has to
- 30:13Speaker 8: happen here. You know, Sam Donald came in, he like,
- 30:17Speaker 8: like we said, he did well above expectations. It was
- 30:21Speaker 8: a fun season, and then when it mattered, he kind
- 30:23Speaker 8: of crashed and burned. I think if he had performed
- 30:26Speaker 8: differently in the playoffs and you know, maybe had gone
- 30:28Speaker 8: up with more of a fight, then we could have
- 30:30Speaker 8: a different conversation, and I would be down to have
- 30:33Speaker 8: a different conversation. But also it's like the money part,
- 30:36Speaker 8: Like you know, to hear that they were pretty close
- 30:38Speaker 8: to bringing kirkback at a high number is a little
- 30:42Speaker 8: scary to me, which is why the Sam Donald coming
- 30:45Speaker 8: back situation is worrisome. And you know, I don't me
- 30:49Speaker 8: saying this is like, oh I don't want Sam Donald
- 30:50Speaker 8: back at all, but it's got to be for the
- 30:52Speaker 8: right price, and like he's got to be the backup,
- 30:54Speaker 8: like it's J J.
- 30:55Speaker 5: McCarthy time. So here's what I'm thinking. You let Sam ride,
- 30:59Speaker 5: you let him go. JJ McCarthy's the guy.
- 31:02Speaker 8: Then you let Daniel Jones be the backup in case
- 31:05Speaker 8: if you know, something goes wrong with McCarthy or you
- 31:08Speaker 8: know he has a bad game, whatever, you bring in
- 31:10Speaker 8: Daniel Jones. You kind of are walking into the same
- 31:14Speaker 8: situation that you were with Donald a year ago. So
- 31:16Speaker 8: I think, you know, just kind of kicking the tires
- 31:19Speaker 8: on those guys that you know, our backups and have
- 31:21Speaker 8: kind of lost their way. You reel them in, you
- 31:23Speaker 8: make them right again, and then you know, you kind
- 31:26Speaker 8: of have something on your hand. So that's that's my
- 31:28Speaker 8: hopes for the Vikings quarterback situation.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Now that's your hopes. Do you see that happening? Because
- 31:38Speaker 2: I think that I think you're pretty close on man,
- 31:42Speaker 2: because if you would have asked me this question maybe
- 31:44Speaker 2: a week and a half ago, aj I would have said, yeah,
- 31:47Speaker 2: you know, maybe Sam is here still. They worked something
- 31:53Speaker 2: out with JJ to just kind of like, hey, be patient,
- 31:56Speaker 2: your time is coming, but we know, just chill out.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe restructure a contract or something, give
- 32:03Speaker 2: him a little bit of money somehow. I don't know
- 32:04Speaker 2: how it works. I'm not going to pretend like I do.
- 32:07Speaker 2: But like you just said, I don't know, man, because
- 32:10Speaker 2: if Donold's out of here, I don't really see any
- 32:13Speaker 2: you know, game changing quarterbacks that at least the Viking's
- 32:15Speaker 2: going to have a shot out of the draft and
- 32:18Speaker 2: then man, yeah, all of a sudden, for all the
- 32:21Speaker 2: crap I've given Daniel Jones and everybody's given Daniel Jones,
- 32:25Speaker 2: all of a sudden, he may be in the mix
- 32:26Speaker 2: to start for this team. Obviously, huge health question mark
- 32:31Speaker 2: with JJ, you know, promising before he got injured in
- 32:36Speaker 2: the preseason last year, so obviously you know, the fans
- 32:40Speaker 2: were ready for him to actually jump in last year
- 32:43Speaker 2: obviously before he got injured. So I think it's going
- 32:46Speaker 2: to be very interesting. I think that I don't know, man,
- 32:50Speaker 2: there's something that's just irking me that I they for
- 32:56Speaker 2: the right price, like you said, if they can keep
- 32:59Speaker 2: Donald around, I think they would like to do that.
- 33:03Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I think it's in his best interest
- 33:06Speaker 8: to think about that too, because if you go somewhere
- 33:09Speaker 8: else where, is he really gonna go where he's gonna
- 33:12Speaker 8: make a splash, Like he's not gonna go to the
- 33:15Speaker 8: Raiders or the Giants or the Titans in win ten
- 33:20Speaker 8: games and be in the thick of it like that.
- 33:22Speaker 8: That just doesn't seem like something that's super viable to me,
- 33:26Speaker 8: Like it's probably just in his best interest to stay
- 33:28Speaker 8: and be a backup.
- 33:29Speaker 5: And sometimes like.
- 33:31Speaker 2: You just gotta accept that role, and the more willing
- 33:35Speaker 2: that you are to do that, the better off you'll be.
- 33:37Speaker 2: The very good point, and also the coaching staff, I mean,
- 33:40Speaker 2: because people are like that. You know, if a quarterback,
- 33:44Speaker 2: let's just obviously we're talking about Darnold. You know, it's
- 33:47Speaker 2: not guaranteed that that success is obviously gonna carry over.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Take a team like the Raiders, they've sucked forever. You know,
- 33:54Speaker 2: I keep saying on my show this that the Raiders
- 33:57Speaker 2: won't win again until Mark Davis sells the team. Horrible
- 34:00Speaker 2: owner puts together mediocre at best coaching staffs, And you know,
- 34:06Speaker 2: I don't see a coaching staff that's better than what
- 34:09Speaker 2: we got being able to help Donald if he goes
- 34:12Speaker 2: elsewhere into a you know, a Vegas situation or something
- 34:16Speaker 2: like that. So yeah, at that point, maybe it's just like, look, man,
- 34:20Speaker 2: I got a great situation here. I'm probably gonna get
- 34:24Speaker 2: an opportunity to play here and there. Maybe he can
- 34:28Speaker 2: be talked into a backup role on this team.
- 34:33Speaker 8: That would be interesting, Yeah, it really would. But it's
- 34:37Speaker 8: also kind of awkward for him too, because you know,
- 34:39Speaker 8: last year he was a starter. Now he's the backup
- 34:41Speaker 8: he's kind of watching the cliffboard. But it could have
- 34:44Speaker 8: been what last year was if JJ McCarthy hadn't gotten hurt.
- 34:47Speaker 8: I mean a lot of people were saying that he
- 34:50Speaker 8: was on that inside track to get, you know, the
- 34:52Speaker 8: starting job, and he was cooking. Personally, I was like,
- 34:56Speaker 8: let's pump the brakes. I really always wanted him to
- 34:58Speaker 8: sit that first year. I mean, it didn't matter like
- 35:02Speaker 8: what Sam did, like right, you see it with you know,
- 35:05Speaker 8: you saw it with Jordan Love all these other guys
- 35:07Speaker 8: that have gotten the time to kind of sit in
- 35:08Speaker 8: the simmer and just you know, learn the game because
- 35:11Speaker 8: as a quarterback, you gotta learn the game. You gotta
- 35:13Speaker 8: be cerebral, yeah, you know, you know, you need time
- 35:17Speaker 8: to kind of absorb everything.
- 35:19Speaker 5: So that's kind of my take on it. Really.
- 35:21Speaker 2: No, that's now. You know, I am way older than
- 35:24Speaker 2: you are, So that's what That's what I grew up
- 35:27Speaker 2: with with, you know, backup quarterbacks. You know, I was
- 35:29Speaker 2: talking with uh, you know, I've had the opportunity to
- 35:32Speaker 2: get to know Tommy Kramer here over the past few years,
- 35:34Speaker 2: and I was talking about that with him, you know,
- 35:36Speaker 2: coming up behind you know, legendary fran Tarkington and you know,
- 35:41Speaker 2: I asked him, I said, hey, did Frand ever give
- 35:43Speaker 2: you any grief? I mean, obviously you're drafted to be
- 35:45Speaker 2: his replacement and blah blah blah, And he's like, nope,
- 35:48Speaker 2: I just buy it. In my time, friend was always
- 35:51Speaker 2: there to help me. And that's what you don't get
- 35:53Speaker 2: to see nowadays because either, you know, the quarterbacks make
- 35:56Speaker 2: so much money coming into the league that it's hard
- 35:59Speaker 2: to just if I sit in them, or situations happen
- 36:02Speaker 2: obviously where they have to play right away. But I
- 36:05Speaker 2: totally totally agree with you, bro. If you could sit
- 36:09Speaker 2: a quarterback a JJ McCarthy for a couple of years
- 36:11Speaker 2: coming out of school and just learn that playbook and
- 36:14Speaker 2: all that, I you know, I think quarterbacks in general
- 36:19Speaker 2: would be a lot better suited and they would play
- 36:22Speaker 2: a lot better.
- 36:23Speaker 5: But that's just me. Yeah, I agree.
- 36:26Speaker 8: You know, it's a crazy game and you need time
- 36:29Speaker 8: to adjust, and the really good ones could come in
- 36:31Speaker 8: there and rip it up. And that's kind of what
- 36:34Speaker 8: we saw from a lot of the guys in the class.
- 36:36Speaker 8: Bow Knicks got thrown in right away. It took him
- 36:38Speaker 8: some time, but he was decent. Jaden Daniels was, you know,
- 36:42Speaker 8: rookie of the Year. I mean, I don't think anybody
- 36:45Speaker 8: saw that coming.
- 36:46Speaker 5: That was awesome.
- 36:47Speaker 2: I did not, And I got to apologize to Jaden
- 36:50Speaker 2: because you know, I wasn't the biggest fan of his
- 36:53Speaker 2: coming out of school. Wasn't really and even though he
- 36:56Speaker 2: was the Heisman Trophy winner, you know, coming out of
- 36:58Speaker 2: a blue blood pro like LSU, I still wasn't, like,
- 37:03Speaker 2: you know, overly impressed with him. And then what he
- 37:06Speaker 2: was able to do to get these commanders and Washington
- 37:09Speaker 2: back in the mix. Obviously, man just took me by surprise,
- 37:12Speaker 2: So mad props to him. Folks. This is Sports Don't
- 37:17Speaker 2: Right Podcast with Vince Wright, Sports Governor. A couple of
- 37:20Speaker 2: minutes left here with AJ's I want to keep them
- 37:22Speaker 2: all night. He was nice enough to join us here,
- 37:24Speaker 2: so let me ask you this, AJ, your thoughts on
- 37:29Speaker 2: this Super Bowl here? You know you're a football guy,
- 37:33Speaker 2: football mind, So before we get you out of here tonight,
- 37:35Speaker 2: I just wanted to get your thoughts on the Super
- 37:37Speaker 2: Bowl Kansas City. For me, it was like I got
- 37:42Speaker 2: to see somebody beat them, Like I just couldn't pick
- 37:45Speaker 2: against them because of what we've seen the past few
- 37:48Speaker 2: years with mahomes and able to pull things out of
- 37:52Speaker 2: his yazoo and make things happen and everything else. But
- 37:56Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, who, by the way, should have been a
- 37:58Speaker 2: Minnesota Viking. I will say that to the day I
- 38:00Speaker 2: died when they had picks twenty three and twenty five.
- 38:03Speaker 2: But no, we gotta have mister cool guy Kirk Cousins. Anyway,
- 38:08Speaker 2: don't get.
- 38:08Speaker 5: Me gone, but Hurts he.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Quote unquote hurts, yes, but just you know, let me
- 38:18Speaker 2: what were your thoughts on the Super Bowl? And because
- 38:21Speaker 2: I don't think anybody expected the blowout that we saw.
- 38:25Speaker 5: No, I don't think anybody saw the blog coming.
- 38:28Speaker 8: But honestly, it's kind of a microcosm of the whole
- 38:32Speaker 8: twenty twenty four NFL season, Like all these games that
- 38:35Speaker 8: we were super excited for. You know, you get rampsed up,
- 38:37Speaker 8: you get seate on the couch, you kind of blow
- 38:40Speaker 8: off your plans, and then it's a blowout or it's
- 38:42Speaker 8: like a seventeen to ten game, Like it's just how
- 38:46Speaker 8: the whole year went. Like like, give me something exciting,
- 38:50Speaker 8: give me something good, Like I feel like we don't
- 38:52Speaker 8: have good games anymore, and I feel like that's attributed
- 38:54Speaker 8: to how defense is played in the NFL. But that's
- 38:56Speaker 8: the whole other RNT that I can get into a
- 38:58Speaker 8: whole nother day. But you know, the Super Bowl. As
- 39:02Speaker 8: time came closer, I was a little bit skeptical on
- 39:04Speaker 8: the Chiefs, and you know, people were saying it, like
- 39:08Speaker 8: when I thought about it the day of, I was like,
- 39:10Speaker 8: you know, this Eagles team, are they better than they
- 39:12Speaker 8: were two years ago? I think they were, because, yeah,
- 39:15Speaker 8: the offense was pretty much the same except you throw
- 39:17Speaker 8: in Saquon Barkley, who had probably literally the best year
- 39:21Speaker 8: running back could ever have. And then that defense, who
- 39:24Speaker 8: was a monster unit like Jalen Carter, the Williams guy,
- 39:29Speaker 8: Josh Sweat, Cooper, Ejen all those guys, absolute dogs. Zach
- 39:33Speaker 8: Bond who came out of absolutely nowhere was a DePoy finalist.
- 39:37Speaker 8: Like just crazy what they were able to do. But
- 39:40Speaker 8: I didn't think they would shut down Kansas City like
- 39:43Speaker 8: they did. Yeah, yeah, that just made things so boring,
- 39:46Speaker 8: like Kansey couldn't do anything. And I feel like that's
- 39:49Speaker 8: how it would be if the Vikings made the Super Bowl.
- 39:51Speaker 8: Is we would not cross midfield until the third quarter
- 39:54Speaker 8: with five minutes left, man, and.
- 39:56Speaker 2: You bring up ugly stats, you know, listening to K
- 40:00Speaker 2: and here the past few days, because what was the
- 40:01Speaker 2: Vikings in their four Super Bowls? And I think Buffalo.
- 40:05Speaker 2: No Buffalo scored, but the Vikings that did, they didn't
- 40:07Speaker 2: score in any of the first halves of those four
- 40:11Speaker 2: Super Bowls that they were in.
- 40:12Speaker 5: That doesn't surprise me.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Minnesota bullshit right there. I mean, that's that Minnesota sports fan.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Only here do we get a stat like that. You know,
- 40:24Speaker 2: we've been in the Bowl four times, haven't scored in
- 40:27Speaker 2: the first half in any of those games. So I
- 40:30Speaker 2: get you, man, So all right, but hey, let me
- 40:34Speaker 2: let AJ get to his life people. He has joined us.
- 40:37Speaker 2: He will be back AJ before we get you out
- 40:40Speaker 2: of here. Tell the folks where they can find you,

- 40:59Speaker 8: trying to do a little bit more short video stuff.
- 41:02Speaker 8: Staate of school. We're trying to pump out stuff when
- 41:04Speaker 8: it comes about. Obviously, this is the quiet time, so
- 41:07Speaker 8: not a whole lot going on over there. But you know,
- 41:10Speaker 8: we kind of had to do some retooling with the podcast.
- 41:12Speaker 8: We kind of had to cut it off late in
- 41:13Speaker 8: the season. But I think we're gonna, you know, behind
- 41:17Speaker 8: the scenes, put some stuff together, put it back together.
- 41:20Speaker 5: And get it rolling again.
- 41:21Speaker 8: But yeah, at State of School ten k and at
- 41:24Speaker 8: AG Murphy seven sixty three, that's where you can find me.
