- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, Uh, Leggy, breaking news in the last ten
- 0:04Speaker 1: minutes that you had to go and jump out and cover.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Thank you for getting on board the program.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Leggy.
- 0:10Speaker 1: First off, tell us what do we know about dra
- 0:14Speaker 1: Greenlaw's actions after the game? The flag that was thrown
- 0:18Speaker 1: that I should note was not even denoted in the
- 0:21Speaker 1: official play by play, the suspension that has come down.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Tell us everything you know about the situation.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Well, he can still appeal this.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Okay, we feel somehow that this is a mistake, but
- 0:33Speaker 4: I there is almost certainly video evidence everywhere of it.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I had heard it it might be an issue this morning.
- 0:44Speaker 4: That you know, there had been some kind of confrontation,
- 0:47Speaker 4: but the league says that green Law actually pursued, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 4: the referee, Brad Allen as he left the field, which
- 0:55Speaker 4: is a mega no no. Coaches sometimes do it, and
- 1:00Speaker 4: they give it a little leeway if they're not too
- 1:04Speaker 4: you know, offensive. But this was a case where you know,
- 1:09Speaker 4: a player has who's much bigger than the official, I
- 1:13Speaker 4: might add, has pursued the referee and the league used
- 1:18Speaker 4: the word threatened, So I think that was part of
- 1:20Speaker 4: it as well.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Jeff, there was so when we watched the video, the
- 1:25Speaker 1: official threw a flag. Does that tell me what that
- 1:31Speaker 1: flag means? If it means anything? Was it merely symbolic?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Because like it's it's one of those things where you
- 1:39Speaker 1: look at and you're like, okay, because last time I checked,
- 1:42Speaker 1: like a football game can't end on a penalty, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: so it's like, well, then, was there supposed to be
- 1:46Speaker 1: like an ensuing kickoff that gets pushed back fifteen yards
- 1:49Speaker 1: on it or something like that as a result of
- 1:51Speaker 1: what happens right there? You're a longtime pool reporter, like,
- 1:55Speaker 1: did the flag have any bearing on anything? Or was
- 1:58Speaker 1: it just a symbolic gesture?
- 2:01Speaker 3: To my knowledge that of the rule book. I you know,
- 2:05Speaker 3: I didn't go.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Look weef, trust me. I'll give you. I'll give you
- 2:10Speaker 2: some leeway on it, to.
- 2:12Speaker 4: My knowledge, because the game is concluded and the referee
- 2:16Speaker 4: is actually they often waved their hands to the clock
- 2:20Speaker 4: operator to make it clear the game is formally over,
- 2:24Speaker 4: since it's at that point the flag is still real,
- 2:28Speaker 4: but it is a post game and it's subject to
- 2:33Speaker 4: this discipline, you know, it's not it's not subject to
- 2:37Speaker 4: in game discipline because the game has officially ended. So
- 2:42Speaker 4: that's my understanding now if it's something different, That's not.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Something I've come across in all my years of doing this.
- 2:50Speaker 4: But to my what I've always been told is when
- 2:54Speaker 4: the referee officially waves to the clock operator that the
- 2:58Speaker 4: game is concluded, then that's it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So weird, Like think about that, guys, like if what
- 3:02Speaker 1: if there was one second left on the clock, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: like it changes a lot of things right there.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Yeah, because because you know, often teams are shaking hands
- 3:11Speaker 4: in the middle of the field, then the clock is
- 3:13Speaker 4: technically still running. And we've seen that happen where flag
- 3:17Speaker 4: is thrown, you know. You know, Randy Gregory got a
- 3:21Speaker 4: flag in one of those sort of scrums before, so.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It can happen.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But yeah, I think when the League used the word threatened,
- 3:32Speaker 4: I would be surprised if Greenlaw appeals, But sometimes players
- 3:37Speaker 4: and their agents and the PA always want them to
- 3:39Speaker 4: appeal no matter what, just to make sure the process is,
- 3:44Speaker 4: you know, done the way they want it to be done.
- 3:46Speaker 5: And then maybe you get him for Dallas and on Houston.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I guess we'll just wait and see how this goes.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Sometimes they they if the league, you know, I'm not
- 3:53Speaker 4: sure that they would officially announce this Andy, but if
- 3:57Speaker 4: the league thinks it's right, sometimes you're on the appeal call,
- 4:00Speaker 4: you know that.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Day immediately there? Yeah, yeah, all right, Look, bigger issues
- 4:04Speaker 5: lie here, I mean, and Jeff, you and I talked
- 4:08Speaker 5: a lot after the.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Talk about it. Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Well, but it also was one of the most fun games,
- 4:14Speaker 5: just one of the most unlikely games because.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Both teams kept doing stuff right.
- 4:17Speaker 5: It's just like both teams kept doing things too.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Is crazy.
- 4:21Speaker 5: But Sean Payton's been He's been asked the temple thing
- 4:24Speaker 5: comes up, and I heard the opening of his presser
- 4:26Speaker 5: where he immediately says, I don't want to hear about tempo.
- 4:28Speaker 5: This that the other is Sean going to have to
- 4:31Speaker 5: accept that some of his preseason plans may need to
- 4:35Speaker 5: change in order for BO to function at an optimal level.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Well, you know the danger with tempo, no matter how
- 4:42Speaker 4: good your quarterback is at it is what you you
- 4:47Speaker 4: know what You're exposing your defense and your special teams
- 4:51Speaker 4: too at that point. I mean, that's that's really the issue.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Sean Payton knows bo Nicks can run a high temple
- 4:59Speaker 4: offense with aiciency. He knows this, but you can't have
- 5:03Speaker 4: one minute possessions after one minute possession that that's just
- 5:08Speaker 4: not going to be survivable. I mean, the Giants lost
- 5:11Speaker 4: the game yesterday, you know, historical loss because they had
- 5:16Speaker 4: too many one minute possessions, one thirty one.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You know, you just can't have those.
- 5:24Speaker 4: And I think that's the issue, you know, and I
- 5:26Speaker 4: think that's why they've run tempo when it's like, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 4: break the glass time in the game. Is that, okay,
- 5:34Speaker 4: we we have to take this risk and just do it.
- 5:38Speaker 4: You know, I think you'd certainly prefer it to be
- 5:41Speaker 4: a change of pace once in a while, Like Shanahan
- 5:44Speaker 4: always liked to use tempo as kind of a you know,
- 5:48Speaker 4: I got the defense right where I want them, so
- 5:50Speaker 4: now I'm going to really run them around for a while,
- 5:53Speaker 4: especially at home. You know, every Broncos coach in history
- 5:56Speaker 4: is believed they have an advantage here at altitude running
- 6:01Speaker 4: at tempo over the defense. So I think they'll use
- 6:05Speaker 4: it more. You know, are they going to go all
- 6:08Speaker 4: in like some folks would like them too. I don't
- 6:10Speaker 4: think you can do that in today's league and survive
- 6:14Speaker 4: unless you're just gonna score every time.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of Jeff's point right there. I'm looking back
- 6:19Speaker 1: at the at the ball possession and drive chart right now.
- 6:22Speaker 1: First three quarters, six of eight possessions were three minutes
- 6:27Speaker 1: or fewer. But the Broncos had the football. There's including
- 6:30Speaker 1: a twenty two second possession in which bo Nicks had
- 6:34Speaker 1: three incompletions.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Early one too. That was the first possession.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Of the first possession of the game.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, they had a minute fifteen in the second quarter.
- 6:43Speaker 1: They had the last possession of the half, which is
- 6:45Speaker 1: only a minute four. They had a fifty eight second
- 6:47Speaker 1: possession in which they went three and out and punted
- 6:50Speaker 1: in the third quarter like that, that is a part
- 6:53Speaker 1: of it. And then it does get to the like,
- 6:55Speaker 1: how much are you killing your defense? By the way,
- 6:57Speaker 1: guy special teams R J. Hart catching the ball at
- 7:00Speaker 1: the six yard line and stepping out of bounds.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Cost you how much brutal thirty four yards of field position? Yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 5: because that's that's at the forty into Jeff if he
- 7:10Speaker 5: leaves it alone.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Yeah, if it goes out of bounds, you're hitting the
- 7:13Speaker 4: you're hitting the ball at the forty Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 1: No, and mistakes like that, like you kind of to
- 7:17Speaker 1: that point of of just right now with this team,
- 7:20Speaker 1: is is that the offense is having its issues. The
- 7:23Speaker 1: special teams are clearly having their issues, although the Giants
- 7:28Speaker 1: would like a word on that, but still, yeah, right
- 7:32Speaker 1: right now, Jeff, like, like, how how do you think
- 7:34Speaker 1: Sean Payton is balancing that whole part of it? Of like,
- 7:39Speaker 1: my defense has to win me football games right now
- 7:42Speaker 1: because I'm just not getting it from anywhere else.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Well, I mean, you know, two things they are the penalties.
- 7:49Speaker 4: They're the second most penalized team in the league. Now,
- 7:52Speaker 4: you know, they were fourth going into the game. Now
- 7:54Speaker 4: they're two, So they're heading the wrong way. And you know, offensively,
- 8:01Speaker 4: I'm looking, I'm clicking it right up now they're you know,
- 8:04Speaker 4: they're they're tied for third offensively and offensive penalties.
- 8:09Speaker 3: So they just got way too much.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Going on there on that side of the ball, and
- 8:14Speaker 4: I think that's contributed. You know, yesterday was a defensive
- 8:18Speaker 4: uh lollapalooza. Penalties. You know, the offense was actually pretty
- 8:23Speaker 4: well behaved. But you know, I it to me, that's
- 8:28Speaker 4: a huge part of it. Those pre snap things. You know,
- 8:32Speaker 4: how many times do you have you seen drive stall
- 8:35Speaker 4: because they get the false start or the hold or
- 8:38Speaker 4: just you know, things that are not that are technique
- 8:42Speaker 4: issues and functional issues. Yeah, but offensively, you know, I
- 8:48Speaker 4: still don't think we know what they're good at because
- 8:51Speaker 4: we don't see it anything enough to make any any
- 8:56Speaker 4: sort of judgment about that.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I know what they're trying to do.
- 8:59Speaker 1: They're they're trying to utilize the horizontal passing game in
- 9:02Speaker 1: the screen game, despite the fact if they don't block
- 9:04Speaker 1: for it.
- 9:06Speaker 5: No, they're terrible at blocking for screens.
- 9:08Speaker 2: It's brutal.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I'm not sure they've blocked the first defender on any
- 9:12Speaker 4: screen they've they've run this year.
- 9:15Speaker 2: It's it's been unbelievable.
- 9:16Speaker 1: By the way, only the Cleveland Browns have punted more
- 9:18Speaker 1: than the Denver Broncos so far this year.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And last year they were they were among the league leaders,
- 9:24Speaker 4: and three and out possessions they were down. They were
- 9:27Speaker 4: a playoff team, down with like the three teams who
- 9:31Speaker 4: led the draft, you know, in three and outs last year.
- 9:34Speaker 4: So they're they're running in bad company. And I you
- 9:38Speaker 4: know again, I you know, I don't want to sound
- 9:40Speaker 4: like let's go back to you know, nineteen eighties, but
- 9:45Speaker 4: Dobbins has been the one consistency in this offense. I mean,
- 9:49Speaker 4: he performed and maybe they're nervous about it. Maybe they're
- 9:53Speaker 4: nervous about his injury history and you know, twenty carries
- 9:57Speaker 4: is they don't want to get up you know, much
- 10:00Speaker 4: above that. But he has been the one really consistent
- 10:04Speaker 4: person and Sutton Portland. Sutton's having a you know, had
- 10:08Speaker 4: the drop yesterday, but he's having a really good year
- 10:11Speaker 4: with some really important catches for this team. And he's obviously,
- 10:17Speaker 4: you know, the only one Nicks really trusts. And you know,
- 10:21Speaker 4: I think Mims is getting there. Yeah, I think Sutton
- 10:24Speaker 4: is the one, But I think Mims, Sutton and Dobbins
- 10:28Speaker 4: are really the three guys they should be dialing in
- 10:30Speaker 4: on with Ingram as a nice you know bonus in that.
- 10:35Speaker 4: But I think there's just too much.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Of four guys on four guys off one.
- 10:42Speaker 4: You know, this personnel grouping, this personnel grouping, and there
- 10:45Speaker 4: there is no rhythm to that. But that's also something
- 10:48Speaker 4: he really believes in as an offensive strategy, is make
- 10:53Speaker 4: it hard for the defense to know who's in the game.
- 10:55Speaker 2: By the way, on the the throat of Marvin Mims
- 10:57Speaker 2: on the game winning drive which they got twenty nine yards,
- 11:01Speaker 2: who was that ball intended for?
- 11:03Speaker 3: You know, I've looked at it about ten times.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I can't figure that sure. Yeah, No, it's because I
- 11:08Speaker 2: think he was.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think initially that's what you're gonna think,
- 11:15Speaker 4: because that's his tight window throw guy.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I mean, it's that metric.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Sutton is so far ahead of all the of the
- 11:22Speaker 4: other Broncos that it's hard for me to believe that
- 11:25Speaker 4: wasn't to him. But you know, by the construction of
- 11:30Speaker 4: the route, it also looks like Mims's ball there too,
- 11:34Speaker 4: So I'm not sure.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So Jeff Uh, Garrett Wilson, Uh, Chris olave, Rishi Jihad Uh,
- 11:42Speaker 1: Jalen Wattle, there's gonna be there's gonna be wide receiver
- 11:44Speaker 1: names that are gonna be bandied about at the trade deadline.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Is based on your conversations, do you feel as though
- 11:51Speaker 1: the Broncos acknowledged that the need of another pass catching playmaker.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Do they view that as something that they've got to
- 11:59Speaker 1: take care this year?
- 12:01Speaker 3: You know, I don't. I don't get the sense that
- 12:03Speaker 3: that's on.
- 12:04Speaker 4: The front burner. Certainly they will listen, yeah, uh, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 4: they'll participate like every team does. It wouldn't matter how
- 12:13Speaker 4: good they are this year or if they were scoring
- 12:16Speaker 4: thirty five a game, they would still participate. And I
- 12:21Speaker 4: think that's the biggest thing in covering the trade deadline
- 12:23Speaker 4: that gets warped is, oh, they made calls. Everybody makes
- 12:28Speaker 4: calls every year. Everybody makes calls. They get calls. That's
- 12:32Speaker 4: that's doing business. So they they will certainly listen. And
- 12:35Speaker 4: I would think, if you know, depending on what the
- 12:38Speaker 4: demand is and what people are asking, you know, I
- 12:43Speaker 4: think I think they were sure they would listen because
- 12:45Speaker 4: I think the head coach believes they're good enough to compete,
- 12:50Speaker 4: and you know, it's they're a nutty team. I mean,
- 12:54Speaker 4: we we're talking about all this stuff and they're in
- 12:56Speaker 4: first place, you know, for the first time since tooenty sixteen.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I believe Week four, I think is the last time
- 13:04Speaker 4: they were sitting where they are now.
- 13:06Speaker 5: All Right, well here's one you wouldn't have to trade
- 13:08Speaker 5: four because your pal Adam Scheffer just broke this. Tyler
- 13:11Speaker 5: Lockett has requested his release from the Titans. Is that
- 13:14Speaker 5: a guy that would make sense for them?
- 13:16Speaker 4: It makes sense for a lot of people. Andy, that's
- 13:18Speaker 4: the thing, you know, that's you know, if he gets
- 13:21Speaker 4: his release.
- 13:21Speaker 5: He did, they did granted, according to Adam, sorry, should
- 13:24Speaker 5: have thrown.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Out now it's just money and who wants to do?
- 13:28Speaker 4: What you know in terms of that.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Is Tyler Lockett still fast enough to run over run
- 13:34Speaker 1: under an overthrown deep ball?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Can he do that? If the Broncos, if they get
- 13:39Speaker 2: one of those guys, we got something.
- 13:41Speaker 4: It's hard for me to believe they would have let
- 13:43Speaker 4: him go trying to get a young quarterback squared away.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But maybe they just thought this is gonna be too
- 13:49Speaker 3: big a problem.
- 13:50Speaker 5: They would like you to acknowledge of the overthrow problem
- 13:53Speaker 5: when he made that count, Yeah, Jeff.
- 13:54Speaker 1: To the According to true media, bo Nicks is the
- 13:59Speaker 1: least act a thrower of the football unthrows ten yards
- 14:02Speaker 1: or more down the field. Okay, and by the way,
- 14:07Speaker 1: that's a stat that you can notice both by the
- 14:09Speaker 1: data and anecdotally. So so Leggy to that point, what's
- 14:14Speaker 1: your read on what's happening with bow at the moment?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Is is there a regression? Is it simply stagnation? Is
- 14:22Speaker 1: it the way the defenses are playing him? Or is
- 14:25Speaker 1: it just all of the above.
- 14:27Speaker 4: It's a lot of how defenses are playing him. I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 4: I was talking to you guys in the spring every
- 14:32Speaker 4: defensive coach I spoke to about him was gonna try
- 14:36Speaker 4: and push him to the outside.
- 14:38Speaker 3: The numbers and down the field. They want to they
- 14:42Speaker 3: want him.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Throwing those balls, because that is where when he came
- 14:48Speaker 4: into the draft that it was felt like those were
- 14:50Speaker 4: going to be the concerns moving forward. I will say
- 14:54Speaker 4: this has every ear mark to me of a quarterback
- 14:58Speaker 4: who has been you know, and you know rightly so.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Turnovers are horrible in the NFL. You want to lose
- 15:05Speaker 4: a lot of games in the NFL have some turnovers.
- 15:08Speaker 4: So but I think his mindset is if I'm gonna miss,
- 15:14Speaker 4: I'm gonna miss beyond beyond the beyond the defender. If
- 15:18Speaker 4: you notice, his back shoulder stuff is really reliable, but
- 15:24Speaker 4: it's when the receiver's facing him.
- 15:26Speaker 3: You know. The last play to Courtland Sutton to.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Kick the field goal is a great throw and a
- 15:32Speaker 4: great ket, but the receiver is facing him, and I
- 15:36Speaker 4: think that's where his comfort level is on those plays,
- 15:40Speaker 4: and when the receiver's moving away, I think his his
- 15:44Speaker 4: default is I'm gonna try and get it as close
- 15:47Speaker 4: as I can, but if I miss, I'm gonna miss
- 15:50Speaker 4: long And I think, you know, he just isn't in
- 15:52Speaker 4: the right flow in that regard, because you know, I
- 15:57Speaker 4: think in his mind he thinks an inner exception is
- 16:01Speaker 4: really awful because A that's how he plays and B
- 16:05Speaker 4: that's what he's being told.
- 16:06Speaker 5: All right, we got about a minute, but I got
- 16:08Speaker 5: to find out from your longtime NFL writer, soothsayer Scout whatever,
- 16:15Speaker 5: where is that stack up as improblem because again, Leggy,
- 16:18Speaker 5: we can't they not been talking about you can't go Tebow.
- 16:20Speaker 5: They didn't need thirty three They scored thirty three points.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I don't remember Alway doing that there, Leggy.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Well, it's the reason you don't remember. It never happened
- 16:30Speaker 4: Broncos history before.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Uh right, the NFL.
- 16:37Speaker 4: We're talking a century over a century worth of NFL football,
- 16:42Speaker 4: and it's it's the third highest or tied for the
- 16:46Speaker 4: second most points ever scored in any quarter of any
- 16:50Speaker 4: NFL game ever played. I mean that's where you're at
- 16:53Speaker 4: in this. I mean, bo is the first NFL player
- 16:57Speaker 4: of any kind, quarterback or otherwise, to have two passing
- 17:02Speaker 4: touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the same in a quarter.
- 17:09Speaker 4: And you know, everybody's seen the stat of the sixteen
- 17:12Speaker 4: hundred consecutive games that were lost by the team trailing
- 17:17Speaker 4: by eighteen with six minutes to play. So it'd be
- 17:22Speaker 4: hard for any of us, even I don't care how
- 17:25Speaker 4: curmudgeoningly you want to be, it'd be hard for anyone
- 17:28Speaker 4: to say, oh, this, does you know.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Unbelieving I've seen them.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of these. But no, you haven't.
- 17:34Speaker 2: No, we saw a lot of these.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Saw We saw a nineteen point comeback in the fourth quarter,
- 17:38Speaker 1: a team score thirty three points, and by the way,
- 17:40Speaker 1: on the same weekend, Jeff lagwold that we saw a
- 17:43Speaker 1: guy throw six shutout innings with ten strikeouts and go
- 17:46Speaker 1: up and hit three home runs. This single greatest baseball
- 17:49Speaker 1: game ever played.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Baseball game. That will timey thing.
- 17:52Speaker 5: I'm not even a big baseball guy.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I'll see it.
- 17:55Speaker 5: That might be the coolest athletic feet I've seen. That
- 17:57Speaker 5: was incredible because he kept hitting home runs too. Let
- 18:00Speaker 5: me hit three homers and then not let you have
- 18:02Speaker 5: any that's that.
