- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a rally house Football Monday on Altitude Sports Radio
- 0:02Speaker 1: ninety two five. Rally house shop every team in town.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Jeff Lakewall to ESPN is our guest on a Monday afternoon,
- 0:08Speaker 1: as he is every Monday afternoon. Leggy, the wind streak
- 0:13Speaker 1: was probably never going to last forever. But why did
- 0:18Speaker 1: in your mind, why did the Broncos see their eleven
- 0:22Speaker 1: game win streak get snapped yesterday against the Jags. Where
- 0:25Speaker 1: did it all go wrong?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well, no, that, you know, I kind of take it
- 0:30Speaker 2: in two segments of that. You know, it's interesting that
- 0:35Speaker 2: Cliff Kingsbury worked with Vance Joseph for a long time,
- 0:38Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator, and you know, he kind
- 0:44Speaker 2: of found a ripple in the defense, and other people
- 0:47Speaker 2: have followed it since, and I think Jacksonville followed it
- 0:52Speaker 2: the best of all. And they had the most talent
- 0:55Speaker 2: in the quarterbacks. Quarterbacks are very, very talented player who
- 1:00Speaker 2: they finally sort of unlocked. So, you know, we maybe
- 1:04Speaker 2: should have been seeing this a few years ago, but
- 1:06Speaker 2: we're seeing it now. And I thought in the seventeen
- 1:11Speaker 2: seventeen game from the fifty yard line, I thought that
- 1:13Speaker 2: was a weird time for a trick play and the
- 1:16Speaker 2: offense never seemed to be the same again after that.
- 1:20Speaker 3: We're just now getting the old estimated injury report and
- 1:23Speaker 3: it looks like Drake Greenlaw dealing with something yet again.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Out concerned for the status on Thursday.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Should we be I'll be stunned if he plays Andy
- 1:32Speaker 2: he pulled a hamstring with like two minutes to go
- 1:35Speaker 2: in the game, and I couldn't you know. He pulled
- 1:39Speaker 2: it running toward the Broncos sideline and he basically hopped
- 1:42Speaker 2: on one leg after he did it for all the
- 1:45Speaker 2: way to the bench. So that's not an injury I
- 1:49Speaker 2: would think would be super awesome, you know, by Thursday
- 1:53Speaker 2: or anything. It may cost him if it's what I
- 1:56Speaker 2: usually a hamstring is. And I don't know this yet,
- 1:59Speaker 2: so you know, don't take it to the bank or anything,
- 2:02Speaker 2: but it would shock me if he's not out for
- 2:05Speaker 2: a little bit because of it.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Seems extremely let's be honest, impossible for Pat Briant to
- 2:12Speaker 1: play this week, being in concussion protocol on a short week.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But Leggie, what do we know? We know he was
- 2:17Speaker 1: released from the hospital last night. What do we know
- 2:18Speaker 1: about the severity of the concussion?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, it's different for everybody, Nate,
- 2:24Speaker 2: So it's you know, you can't I can't really give
- 2:27Speaker 2: you like a number scale sure or anything like that.
- 2:30Speaker 2: But you know, it was serious enough to put him
- 2:33Speaker 2: in an ambulance to take him to the hospital, even
- 2:36Speaker 2: though he had ceiling and was moving as in the
- 2:39Speaker 2: extremities when they took him to the hospital, So they
- 2:42Speaker 2: obviously thought enough of it to get him checked out
- 2:46Speaker 2: and everything. And like, you know, you have to clear
- 2:48Speaker 2: so many hurdles even in the best of circumstances in
- 2:53Speaker 2: the concussion protocol, so he would have to like clear
- 2:56Speaker 2: multiple benchmarks every day to even have a chanceants to play.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And I just don't see even in a very minor concussion,
- 3:04Speaker 2: I don't think that's usually possible.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Laggy, As long as we're on the injury conversation, where
- 3:11Speaker 1: did you notice the absence of Brandon Jones the most yesterday?
- 3:15Speaker 2: In the red zone communication Jaggs caught him twice that
- 3:20Speaker 2: I've seen so far, trying to make a change that
- 3:25Speaker 2: the touchdown Trevor Lawrence ran for was there looked to
- 3:30Speaker 2: me like a communication bust. And then the touchdown throw
- 3:35Speaker 2: in the south end zone left corner when you're facing
- 3:40Speaker 2: the end zone. That that looked like a communication bust too.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And after the game a few of the defensive guys
- 3:47Speaker 2: said there were a few more communication issues than they've had,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and that's where you're going to miss, you know, one
- 3:55Speaker 2: of the most veteran guys in the defense and one
- 3:57Speaker 2: of the smartest you know, to boot. And I also
- 4:01Speaker 2: think that, like we were talking earlier, you know about
- 4:04Speaker 2: the Kingsbury thing, that people are attacking the same players
- 4:09Speaker 2: over and over again. They you know, like Cirtan got
- 4:13Speaker 2: very little action last night, and the Broncos couldn't shift
- 4:16Speaker 2: around to get them, uh, get them toward where the
- 4:20Speaker 2: ball is, because they don't have the same number of options, uh,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know with PJ. Locke and then they were they
- 4:27Speaker 2: were using JL Skinner and some of the the red
- 4:31Speaker 2: zone dime short yardage looks uh and that's just not
- 4:35Speaker 2: the same and it's not gonna be the same, and
- 4:37Speaker 2: then they're gonna have to vance. Joseph has made great
- 4:41Speaker 2: adjustments all year, and he's got big ones to make
- 4:43Speaker 2: now because you know, I don't think Bradon Jones's coming
- 4:46Speaker 2: back anytime soon. If green Law's injured and Stern are
- 4:49Speaker 2: both injured. That puts linebacker down very thin. Uh, They're
- 4:54Speaker 2: gonna have to make some decisions about how much they
- 4:57Speaker 2: can do on defense, uh, and what that mean for
- 5:00Speaker 2: what the coverage looks like. I think, uh, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 2: given the rookie John Ay barn Uh, some run at
- 5:09Speaker 2: safety may be the solution, but I don't know yet
- 5:12Speaker 2: if they if they think that's a legitimate option.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Why did the offense look clunky yesterday, Jeff? Basically after
- 5:20Speaker 3: maybe the first quarter?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Again, you know, you know, I'm not you know,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I know it's awesome if it works and everything, and
- 5:28Speaker 2: you know, I'm not second definant because you guys know
- 5:32Speaker 2: how I feel about that stuff. But I don't think
- 5:34Speaker 2: a trick play from the fifty is awesome at that
- 5:36Speaker 2: time of the game. And I think when it doesn't work,
- 5:39Speaker 2: it puts you, uh, sort of in a mood. And
- 5:43Speaker 2: that was not a good accuracy game for bo Nicks.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You know, we've got a metric at ESPN off target throws,
- 5:50Speaker 2: which basically are our throws outside the you know, common
- 5:55Speaker 2: arm reach circle on your body, and you know, it
- 6:01Speaker 2: was his third highest off target performance of the year,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and on all three losses. He's had at least twenty
- 6:10Speaker 2: percent of his attempts are off target, So it was
- 6:14Speaker 2: one of those games that fits the profile. And I
- 6:17Speaker 2: think the yardage is empty. I think it's empty yardage.
- 6:20Speaker 2: It's maybe a career high for him, and I get that,
- 6:22Speaker 2: but none of that was very meaningful, especially in the
- 6:26Speaker 2: second half. So when his accuracy goes, their offense isn't
- 6:30Speaker 2: the same. And you know, it makes sense your quarterback's
- 6:33Speaker 2: got to be fairly accurate for things to work, but
- 6:36Speaker 2: it really impacts them. And I thought they bailed on
- 6:41Speaker 2: the run. I mean, you know, Julia McLoughlin goes sixteen
- 6:45Speaker 2: yards and nine yards on his first two carries of
- 6:47Speaker 2: the game and then touches the ball three more times
- 6:51Speaker 2: the rest of the day. I don't get that, and
- 6:55Speaker 2: I'm not going to get it, and I don't you know, Look,
- 6:57Speaker 2: people aren't excited about the run and all that stand.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But the teams that Jacksonville is bullied has given up
- 7:04Speaker 2: on the run game and that was their sixth game
- 7:07Speaker 2: this year where the opponent didn't attempt twenty Rushes talking to.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald as we do every Monday afternoon on the
- 7:14Speaker 1: Craig Man Lindahl Show on Out Dude Sports Radio ninety
- 7:17Speaker 1: two five. Yeah, clunky game offensively for the Broncos. You
- 7:21Speaker 1: mentioned the trick play right there, Jeff, hear me out
- 7:26Speaker 1: on this one. Defensively, the Broncos have just they have
- 7:29Speaker 1: not been as as sturdy as of late. And some
- 7:33Speaker 1: of it is just look, they're playing better quarterbacks, but
- 7:35Speaker 1: like you can see a pretty definitive switch since the bye,
- 7:39Speaker 1: they're giving up more yardage, especially through the air. Sean
- 7:44Speaker 1: Payton has gotten pretty conservative with some of his calls
- 7:49Speaker 1: this season in terms of punting and plus territory, when
- 7:53Speaker 1: to go for it on fourth down, et cetera. If
- 7:57Speaker 1: this Denver defense is going to be a little leakier
- 8:01Speaker 1: down the stretch here, does Sean Payton maybe need to
- 8:04Speaker 1: give some consideration to getting a little more aggressive in
- 8:07Speaker 1: those situations and try and win some higher scoring games.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Maybe, I think that's always a consideration. I think
- 8:15Speaker 2: if your defense is leaky and I'm a coach, I'm
- 8:19Speaker 2: always going to be worried about field position, you know.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So if I go for it and I don't get it,
- 8:25Speaker 2: am I giving a short field to the other offense
- 8:29Speaker 2: with a leaky defense? I think that's always a got
- 8:33Speaker 2: to be in the back of your mind. But you know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: there were a couple of yesterday where you're kind of wondering,
- 8:37Speaker 2: you know why he kicked or you know, the you know,
- 8:42Speaker 2: why he didn't go for it or any of this.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I think there were a few yesterday, especially in this
- 8:46Speaker 2: day and age, when the you know, sort of the
- 8:49Speaker 2: metrics tell you to go for it almost all the time.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But I think some of it is a field with him.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I think people should know he's still very much for
- 9:00Speaker 2: his reputation as this offensive, you know, sort of this
- 9:04Speaker 2: flamboyant offensive guy. He's very much a gut field guy
- 9:07Speaker 2: in those situations, you know, kind of not old school,
- 9:11Speaker 2: but it's a it's an older way of thinking that
- 9:15Speaker 2: it matters to them, you know, like Sean Paige. It
- 9:18Speaker 2: matters to Sean Payton who they're playing, how the other
- 9:21Speaker 2: quarterback is playing, how he thinks his own offense is playing.
- 9:25Speaker 2: You know, it all factors in the math for him
- 9:30Speaker 2: more than it might like just in this simple arithmetic
- 9:34Speaker 2: of it. So and I think sometimes he's very comfortable
- 9:38Speaker 2: with his decisions and people can't understand because the numbers
- 9:42Speaker 2: don't match but you know, his math is a little
- 9:45Speaker 2: different than the real math. Maybe.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Like it'll not surprise you at all to find
- 9:50Speaker 1: out that the punting on a fourth and fourth from
- 9:52Speaker 1: the plus forty six I hated, and I hated the
- 9:55Speaker 1: twenty one yard field goal. I hate the chip shot.
- 9:57Speaker 1: When you're at the three yard line and you're down
- 9:59Speaker 1: three school like you're you're right on the doorstep, you've
- 10:02Speaker 1: got to try and get six right there. Again, Ultimately,
- 10:05Speaker 1: it did not matter, like the Broncos didn't make the
- 10:07Speaker 1: kind of rally that they had to. I just I
- 10:10Speaker 1: thought that there were some decisions being made by Sean
- 10:13Speaker 1: yesterday that it was like, dude, you've you've got to
- 10:16Speaker 1: try and get some points right now because that other
- 10:17Speaker 1: guy's dealing.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean to me when you're watching and
- 10:23Speaker 2: you know, I guess and I don't look. My mortgage
- 10:25Speaker 2: isn't riding on it, So I understand the thinking. But
- 10:29Speaker 2: to me, if you're gonna lose by fourteen, what's the
- 10:33Speaker 2: difference if you're gonna lose by twenty one if you
- 10:35Speaker 2: don't get you know, if you go before you don't
- 10:37Speaker 2: get it, that's you know, That's how my mind is
- 10:40Speaker 2: but again I'm not you know, I'm not betting the
- 10:43Speaker 2: mortgage on it, like like these guys are, and you
- 10:46Speaker 2: know it's their livelihood. They're gonna get fired if they
- 10:48Speaker 2: they make too many bad decisions. But so it's a
- 10:52Speaker 2: different mindset. But yeah, I thought, you know, the three
- 10:55Speaker 2: yard line. I think if he's feeling good about the offense,
- 10:58Speaker 2: they go for it there. I think that was more
- 11:00Speaker 2: testament of how he felt about how things were going.
- 11:03Speaker 3: All right, Jeff, we don't have to belabor the point,
- 11:06Speaker 3: and I'm not saying it necessarily change the game, although
- 11:08Speaker 3: I'd be curious to see the other way. What does
- 11:11Speaker 3: the NFL have to do that we can actually have
- 11:13Speaker 3: a uniform. I mean, again, the clock hit zeros in
- 11:18Speaker 3: the stadium and there's still like another second, half second.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Are we going to get any solution towards the actual
- 11:25Speaker 3: real delay game or is it just gonna stay in
- 11:28Speaker 3: another world?
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think it's always up to the crew. You know,
- 11:31Speaker 2: there's always that an official will always tell you there's
- 11:36Speaker 2: the gap of time between you know, the umpire or
- 11:41Speaker 2: the referee seeing it hit zero and making the call
- 11:45Speaker 2: and then checking the ball.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Well, the gap doesn't even consistent yesterday. Man, they have
- 11:51Speaker 3: like three times.
- 11:53Speaker 2: All right, you know, I get it, but I'm just
- 11:55Speaker 2: telling you what officials say, that the clocks don't always
- 11:59Speaker 2: line up with the ball and they got to see
- 12:01Speaker 2: both to make the call, and that there's always a
- 12:03Speaker 2: gap there. Uh. I know it was pretty obvious, but.
- 12:07Speaker 1: You know, again, a buzzer, A buzzer show sire.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Could it be something lights up? Can we get something
- 12:15Speaker 3: to light up?
- 12:17Speaker 2: We're talking about a league that still uses the chain people.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I mean, you know they're not They're not asked to
- 12:25Speaker 2: move very quickly. I've always felt like it should be
- 12:27Speaker 2: like the NBA, like the yes the the outline of
- 12:31Speaker 2: the clock should just light red when it hits zero
- 12:34Speaker 2: and that makes it pretty easy. But you know, again,
- 12:37Speaker 2: they're still using the chain and they still use the
- 12:41Speaker 2: old play clocks.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's it's it's one of the dumbest things in in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the freaking sport. My god, he is Jeff Legwald. Everybody
- 12:49Speaker 1: ESPN dot com read Leggy stuff right there. Uh. He
- 12:52Speaker 1: has got updates on Pat Bryant and everything else happening
- 12:55Speaker 1: this week on a short week, uh for the Broncos
- 12:58Speaker 1: as they take on by the way, Leggy can you
- 12:59Speaker 1: give us any scouting report on Chris Aluta kun a
- 13:04Speaker 1: lot of Kuhn. I'm not sure how to say his name,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but I know he played at South Dakota State.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I did do a draft work up on him, so
- 13:12Speaker 2: I had to look at that.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Of course you did.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I'm still going through the Chiefs game right now, so
- 13:18Speaker 2: I don't have a good one for you. I certainly
- 13:21Speaker 2: think the Broncos will believe it's better than facing Mahomes
- 13:24Speaker 2: for Minshew in the game.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I would certainly think so. He was a seventh round
- 13:28Speaker 1: pick of the Steelers back in twenty twenty two. But again,
- 13:32Speaker 1: if anybody was grinding that Jack Rabbits tape, you know
- 13:35Speaker 1: it was Jeff Legwaald. Everybody Leggy great stuff is always buddy,
- 13:38Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I appreciate you guys.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Say it all right, Chris a lot of a lot
- 13:43Speaker 1: Aluta Kuhn, Sure, a lot of kun. Why not? Yes,
- 13:47Speaker 1: run with it South Dakota State.
- 13:50Speaker 3: He will be a guy you forget after Thursday night,
- 13:53Speaker 3: although watch you'll they'll win and he'll never forget him.
