- 0:00And eggs and issues travel, things have gotten in the way of
- 0:05me see and Jesse Fairbanks for a while.
- 0:07And it's nice to see you once more, Sir.
- 0:08How are things on this fine Thursday?
- 0:10Very good you. Good, thank you for asking.
- 0:12It's a little chilly out. I'm wearing a hoodie, not a big
- 0:14fan of that. What'd they say?
- 0:16We got another three weeks of this weather at.
- 0:18Least Yep, it's not going to be summer until July.
- 0:20I know apparently, so we'll we'll muddle on through.
- 0:23But I appreciate you being here as always.
- 0:25Jesse Fairbanks, Maine vintage choice, 650 Main Street.
- 0:27Make sure you stop by and say hello to Jesse and the fam there
- 0:30and buy yourself a whole bunch of stuff while you're while
- 0:33you're in. There, got everything.
- 0:34You are cooking and I imagine. Now, yeah, we got even got we
- 0:37just got got in hacky sacks. Oh, hacky sacks and squish
- 0:41butter. I'm sorry, what?
- 0:43The they're like a viral sensation thing.
- 0:47It looks like a stick of butter, but it's like a squishy memory
- 0:49foam type thing. Yeah, very interesting.
- 0:52Squish butter. The hacky sack.
- 0:53And hacky sack. That is, do you have any double
- 0:55sticks? I don't, but those are back
- 0:57around. I just yes, yeah, they call them
- 1:01juggling sticks now is the. Juggling.
- 1:03Well, proper term sticks, can't say.
- 1:04That, Yeah. OK.
- 1:05How about I'm thinking of like moon shoes?
- 1:08I'm thinking of everything from back then, right?
- 1:11What was the Oh yeah Pogs? You must have been.
- 1:13Pogs, at some point I did. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:14Actually, when I first opened the store, I bought a gentleman
- 1:18came in that was a competitive player of Pogs and he played in
- 1:21all these tournaments, well, back then, back then all over
- 1:24the country. So I bought his competitive POG
- 1:27set. I got briefly sucked into that
- 1:28for about like 2 months. Yeah, in like 1995 or whatever
- 1:31that was, whatever. That was great.
- 1:32I think I bought the the big pod pad plus all the pods and then
- 1:38nobody really played it like it's like nobody cares about
- 1:42this. It's.
- 1:42Like it was like the slammers were the coolest thing.
- 1:44I guess, but you didn't even use them, you were just collecting
- 1:46them. It was.
- 1:46Like a collector. Oh, exactly.
- 1:48I didn't know how to play it. Yeah.
- 1:49Well, Jesse Fairy, it's always good to talk to you.
- 1:52We love doing trivia every time you join us, so Jesse always
- 1:55brings a fun question for the audience to ask.
- 1:59If you get the question right, of course you are the proud
- 2:01recipient of a Maine Vintage Toys T-shirt, some swag from MVT
- 2:08as we like to call them, and you can stop by after the show and
- 2:11go visit ME and Vintage Choice to go pick it up.
- 2:13But you got to win to get it. So call in now, 879-9426, That
- 2:18is the phone number if you'd like to get in the running here.
- 2:20The question for this week, Jesse Fairbanks, is what?
- 2:23All right. Released in 1986 by Worlds of
- 2:26Wonder, the same company behind Teddy Roxpin, this futuristic
- 2:31toy craze used infrared light technology and became one of the
- 2:34hottest neighborhood games of the decade.
- 2:37Kids and adults battled each other, while arenas and special
- 2:41places to play started popping up everywhere.
- 2:45No, you look puzzled. I do look puzzled.
- 2:49OK. I thought it was going to be
- 2:50easier every time, you know? Well, I'm sure when somebody
- 2:54gets it, I'll probably be like, Oh yeah, that makes sense.
- 2:56Yeah. 879-9426 if you think you know the answer to this
- 2:59question. So 80.
- 2:59Six definitely probably played it.
- 3:02Oh, I have no doubt that I did. Yeah, definitely played.
- 3:04It Yeah, I'm sure I did. But yeah, you've, you've cooked
- 3:06my brain enough today that I don't know.
- 3:08So 879-9426, if you think you know the answer to this question
- 3:11and keep calling in too because often times first person gets it
- 3:15wrong. So we need to go 235 or 9 deep
- 3:19to get to the actual answer. And I would love to know it
- 3:22because now I'm curious. So people are calling in right
- 3:25now. So we'll go to, we'll go to the
- 3:27phones as soon as Danny gives me a name.
- 3:29As soon as Danny gives me a name, I will call on whoever's
- 3:31there and then we will hopefully have a winner of some main
- 3:37vintage toy swag. So that's coming up here in
- 3:39just. Well, we're setting up our toy
- 3:41room. We have like a toy room and it's
- 3:42kind of pop culture room and this was one of the first things
- 3:45I bought to put in there 'cause I just loved it so much when I
- 3:48was younger. You've intrigued me, you said.
- 3:5219. 86 yeah 1986. Worlds of Wonder was the company
- 3:56the same company that did Teddy Roxpin, but variously different
- 4:00I. Was going to say that doesn't
- 4:01sound like a Teddy Roxpin S type of type of thing.
- 4:05And I think they still have some of these places to go play this.
- 4:08OK, well, let's find out what we're talking about here.
- 4:10I mean, I do actually have an idea, but I feel like it's too
- 4:12easy or, or too simple. We'll see.
- 4:15Ray. Ray is our first guy.
- 4:17So let's do. Ray.
- 4:18Sir, what do you got for a guess?
- 4:21Yeah, my guess would be laser tag.
- 4:22It is laser. Tag OK so that was my thought
- 4:24that's I see that was so they definitely still have places.
- 4:27I was like, Oh yeah, my kid went to go to, I feel.
- 4:29Like there's a bowling alley right In Portland, yes.
- 4:32Yeah, Yep, spare time does it, yeah.
- 4:33OK. Spare time does it.
- 4:35It's a good place for a birthday party.
- 4:36Yeah, it is. Ray, you have won.
- 4:38Congratulations. Yes.
- 4:39Thank you. Well done, Sir.
- 4:41Stop by 650 Main St. Pick up your shirt and you'll
- 4:44enjoy wearing it around town. Thanks a lot, Ray.
- 4:47Yeah, no, laser tag is not only is it still a thing, but they
- 4:50sell it like in like home. Like you can buy it for your
- 4:53kids and they can run around and get 'cause mine and have them.
- 4:56And you, you get like the gun you have like the little chest
- 5:00piece or whatever that you put on and it just it, you know, you
- 5:03shoot it or whatever and you run around my house screaming like a
- 5:05crazy man does. That gun look less like a gun
- 5:07now. Oh yeah, it's, it's definitely
- 5:09like a plastic white thing with like a lot of glowing lights on
- 5:13it. Yeah.
- 5:14So you can sort of. The one I had was all like black
- 5:17and it definitely looked a little futuristic but definitely
- 5:21could be mistaken for. There's a reason they don't want
- 5:25you to do that. Anymore they had it in a in a
- 5:27black version and a white version so you could.
- 5:30Yeah. The ones they sell for like you
- 5:31to pick up for home use or whatever are pretty.
- 5:33I think they're white now. Yeah.
- 5:35And they're, they they look like what you would imagine a science
- 5:38fiction space laser beam gun or something like that would look
- 5:42like. So it doesn't look anything
- 5:43like. Anything and they must vibrate.
- 5:44I don't remember them vibrating. They make a lot.
- 5:46They definitely made a lot of noise.
- 5:48Yeah, they make a lot of noise. I think when you get hit it goes
- 5:50it like a crash noise happens and it starts blinking and yeah,
- 5:54whatever. But no, that's, that's always
- 5:56pretty popular gift. And I think literally, I think
- 6:00my son just did that last his, you know, like in December for
- 6:03his birthday party. I think one year kind of floats
- 6:08into the next for me. I don't really remember all this
- 6:09stuff, but he just did one and there's a lot of kids there, so
- 6:12good times were had by all. You mentioned to me, by the way,
- 6:14that the new He Man movie is coming.
- 6:16Speaking of nostalgia. I think it was this Thursday
- 6:18maybe? Oh, it's so it's like I.
- 6:19Thought it was this week sometime.
- 6:21So like today, today, maybe tomorrow.
- 6:22Is it today? Tomorrow I just saw another
- 6:24preview for it, so I have to imagine we're.
- 6:26Getting it was coming close. Right down to it, you have had a
- 6:29pretty universally consistent collection of of he man stuff
- 6:34since I first met you, so that's one of your sweet spots.
- 6:37Right, that and GI Joe Yeah, I keep a good.
- 6:40You got a bunch now because I got to imagine that would be a.
- 6:42High end event of of he man GI Joe I'm wiped.
- 6:46I could just just put them out and they fly.
- 6:48So, which is a good problem to have, but I'd like to have a
- 6:50nice beautiful full looking case this four times you.
- 6:54Know, of course. Did you know, by the way,
- 6:55Speaking of trivia, that he, man would not exist if it wasn't for
- 6:59Arnold Schwarzenegger? Yes, I have heard.
- 7:01That yeah, I saw this yesterday actually, So it must be somehow
- 7:04tied into the movie or so. I don't know.
- 7:05But I guess what ended up happening was I think Mattel,
- 7:09which is the ones that did he, man, right?
- 7:10That's Mattel, Right. So I guess for the Conan the
- 7:14Barbarian movie, when that came out, of course, starring Arnold
- 7:18Schwarzenegger. And I hear, by the way, there is
- 7:20a new Conan, King Conan movie that's going to come out
- 7:23relatively soon with Arnold in it.
- 7:25Oh, yeah. And I will be there on day one
- 7:28for that. But anyway, they do this movie,
- 7:30right? And obviously it's, you know,
- 7:32it's, you know, sword and sandal kind of thing.
- 7:34And you got this big gigantic monster of a dude and and so
- 7:38they wanted to market it. So they made a toy and I guess
- 7:41something happened with the toys where they either didn't release
- 7:43them or there was a mistake or something.
- 7:45So they made all these like muscle bound, like barbarian
- 7:49esque kind of figures or whatever.
- 7:51And they ended up like having to do something with it.
- 7:54So they're like, screw it, let's make a toy line.
- 7:56Freaking he man, let's do that. And that's how he made Bikini
- 7:59Man. And if you think about it,
- 8:01looking at him, he's like, yeah, that is kind of Schwarzenegger
- 8:03esque, isn't it? For sure.
- 8:04Looks like he's on some tests. It was definitely like a
- 8:07company, Remco that did kind of, they were always kind of doing
- 8:10knock off type toys of the thing and they definitely had a line
- 8:14that looked even more like going in.
- 8:16Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, very similar.
- 8:18So. Well, you can, you can thank
- 8:20Arnold for that, I guess. See, I always liked with those,
- 8:23with those things, it was not just the toys, but like they had
- 8:26like they had like companion books that went with them.
- 8:29So you had like a story to go with it.
- 8:30You obviously had the cartoon. Show audio, put the cassette in
- 8:33and read along. But.
- 8:34That's true. I do remember that.
- 8:36Wow. That's yeah, that's a flashback.
- 8:37Yeah, yeah, I definitely remember that.
- 8:40I'm just, I'm just trying to think of all the, all the
- 8:44different, you know, sort of like stories that came out of
- 8:47it. It was a lot of fun to go
- 8:48through that kind of thing. And then have you ever, have you
- 8:51ever actually tried rewatching the cartoon?
- 8:52Show because it's not in a lot of it's terrible, yeah.
- 8:54It's really bad. Yeah.
- 8:56It's not good. Like I remembered it being a lot
- 8:58more entertaining than it was. Yeah.
- 8:59It just was like you, you can go watch a rewatch an episode of
- 9:02Transformers. And I think like, Oh yeah, that
- 9:04actually is, you know, for a kid, it's really good.
- 9:07He man was. But I'll give this movie a lot
- 9:10of credit though, because like this is this movie that that is
- 9:13coming out, which perhaps is today, as Jesse said, is seems
- 9:17to be making a good faith effort to actually make it fun.
- 9:21I mean, if you look at they actually have like Mecca neck in
- 9:23that thing, that guy with the long neck, the metal neck thing,
- 9:26like he's in it and he's got the long neck when he looks like the
- 9:29figure, like they're doing it the right way.
- 9:31I always hated it when like Michael Bay did the Transformers
- 9:34movies, he made them all look different like it.
- 9:37Was not He didn't like the Dolph Lundgren adaptation.
- 9:41OK, so that movie is so bad. It's good, though, you got to
- 9:44admit, right? It's so bad it's good.
- 9:46Wasn't Courtney Cox in that? I think so, yeah.
- 9:48She was one of the teenagers, right?
- 9:49There was like two teenagers from the, you know, real Earth.
- 9:52Yeah. That ended up going into the
- 9:54parallel dimension. Dolph Lundgren, not a bad he
- 9:57man, but he's he to me. He was always too tall.
- 10:00Like. He man looked like he was like.
- 10:03And it, yeah, he's more tall, kind of thin, you know, he's
- 10:06well built, but like, thinner right now 'cause yeah, he may
- 10:09know. He's obviously muscular, but
- 10:11like I like, I mean, I hate to go back to Schwarzenegger, but
- 10:14like that's the kind of like more square, you know, than than
- 10:18long. So I didn't think Dolph was
- 10:20really the best guy, but that movie was who who played
- 10:23Skeletor in that movie? That was.
- 10:25Oh, I can see the guy too. Was it I?
- 10:27I try. I feel like it's a really good
- 10:29actor. I can't remember the guy's name.
- 10:31Because he did a lot of voice over work too.
- 10:33I did he Yeah. Well, this is going to be a
- 10:36different movie. I, I think.
- 10:40I think this is actually going to be fairly good.
- 10:42I mean, they got a Street Fighter movie coming out.
- 10:44They got that more combat thing came out, didn't it?
- 10:46Isn't that already out? I think so.
- 10:47The Mortal Kombat movie, I think that was well received because
- 10:50he got Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, which is fantastic.
- 10:53That's a great idea. That's a fantastic idea.
- 10:56And then of course, you got a couple more more movies coming
- 10:59out this winter that I think are pretty good too.
- 11:00So it might actually be a halfway decent movie here for
- 11:03those of us who like nostalgia. Plus you mentioned that other
- 11:06movie, The Chris Hansen movie, so.
- 11:08Right. I was telling Jesse on the on
- 11:09the lead up here, I saw the IT was just a teaser.
- 11:12It was just a teaser. But Robert Pattinson, Robert
- 11:15Pattinson, he of Twilight and, you know, 18 different
- 11:18Christopher Nolan movies is playing Christopher Chris Hanson
- 11:22from to Catch a Predator fame. And the teaser is really just
- 11:25him talking to one of the people that was, you know, in the it's
- 11:28always the kitchen. You know, it's like they watch
- 11:30take a seat over there to, you know, sit.
- 11:32Down what? Exactly were you intending to do
- 11:35here, Sir? You know, like nothing, nothing.
- 11:37I wasn't doing anything that. I don't know what their angle is
- 11:40though, because it's made by a 24, which is that horror studio
- 11:43that that does a lot of very interesting and creative spins
- 11:48on the genre. So they might maybe Chris Hansen
- 11:51secretly murdering people or there might be a lawsuit coming
- 11:55on this movie. But yeah, so maybe it's going to
- 11:58be a good year for movies overall.
- 11:59But make sure as you go to the movies, friends, you stop by 650
- 12:02Main St. in South Portland, visit Main vintage toys, pick
- 12:06up. Apparently not any GI Joes
- 12:08'cause they're out now, but he always gets a new supply of
- 12:10them. So whenever you see him, grab
- 12:11them. But got lots of other stuff
- 12:12there that you always want. And you get to mingle with a
- 12:15tourist now because it's getting to be that time of year.
- 12:17I love it.
