- 0:20Andrew to check oh for the Inside the Birds podcast.
- 0:23Inside the Birds dot Com is here for today's Football
- 0:26at four. It is a rematch of the Super Bowl,
- 0:29which the Eagles won forty to twenty two overall. This
- 0:32is the eleventh Super Bowl rematch in the following season,
- 0:36the third straight year it has happened, actually, by the way,
- 0:39and the defending champions are seven to three in those
- 0:43ten rematches. And let's bring in Andrew to check. Oh.
- 0:46We saw these two teams in February. It was not
- 0:48a fair fight, Andrew. How different are the two teams
- 0:52this time around? They're facing in week two as opposed
- 0:55a little deeper in the year. But how different are
- 0:57the Eagles and the Chiefs.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not loving the Week two matchup. It sort
- 1:03of takes away the luster, the allure of this game. Mike,
- 1:07But This is a different Kansas City Chiefs team, and
- 1:10it's a different Eagles team, as you might expect than
- 1:13the ones that met in Super Bowl fifty nine. I
- 1:15don't know that Kansas City has the same offensive firepower
- 1:18that they once had. Now they do have Patrick Mahomes,
- 1:20and as long as Travis Kelsey's there, they're going to
- 1:23find ways to move the football. Isaiah Pacheco a good
- 1:26downhill running back that I think adds an interesting element
- 1:29to their offense. But even defensively, they're not quite what
- 1:33they've been. I'm expecting this to be sort of one
- 1:37of those games where Patrick Mahomes looks to try and
- 1:40test the Eagles second level and really even the third
- 1:44level with the safety play which with Kelsey, and try
- 1:47to get some of those offensive weapons going. Jehad Campbell,
- 1:50I thought, had a really good game against Dallas and
- 1:54that had a nice play down the seam there on
- 1:56Brevin span Ford the tight end down the field, and
- 2:00I think they're going to try to find ways to
- 2:03pepper his side of the field with Travis Kelcey. But
- 2:06I get the sense that Jehi Campbeill be ready to
- 2:08answer the bell.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you look at Travis kelce recording a receiving touch
- 2:12on consecutive games dating back to Week seventeen last season,
- 2:16and he was a guy last week had a big
- 2:18play there. You'll see how the Eagles match up with him,
- 2:20because I want to kind of zone in on that.
- 2:22Do you think that Kelsey is still their best offensive
- 2:25weapon in the past game, they don't really have that
- 2:28stand out wide receiver with a couple of injuries.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, so I think that that kind of paints
- 2:34the picture of the state of the Kansas City offense.
- 2:37Travis Kelcey, to answer your question, he is still the
- 2:39focal point of that passing attack and I'm expecting him
- 2:43to be force fed with targets. Again. They still have
- 2:46Patrick Mahomes and he's kind of like Houdini back there.
- 2:49He can find ways to maneuver the pocket. I mean,
- 2:53they do have the RPO game, the boot game, and
- 2:55they can. It's an offense that is multiple, so you
- 2:59have to always account for that. But the passing game
- 3:01starts with Travis Kelcey, and if I'm looking at it
- 3:04from just a matchup perspective, I would imagine that they're
- 3:07going to try and test your hot campbell and coverage
- 3:10and Drew mccooba and Sydney Brown as well.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, obviously Dori Jackson had his struggles last week,
- 3:17and do you anticipate Andrew, I know what Vic Fangio
- 3:19said on Tuesday. Does Dori Jackson get another full gain
- 3:23to prove himself or do you think this is a
- 3:24game where they start to phase him out and maybe
- 3:27phase a guy like Jaquorian Bennett in.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's a great question, and Vick Fanjaiel on
- 3:33Tuesday said right now, yes, he is the Eagles starter
- 3:36at corner. That if depending on how you interpret that,
- 3:40that leaves it fluid and they could obviously change, But
- 3:43Vick Fangaiel, a couple of weeks ago, Mike mentioned that
- 3:46whoever was that cornerback to oppositely QUINNYA. Mitchell was going
- 3:49to get sort of a long leash. Now we'll see
- 3:51how long that leash could be if a Dory starts
- 3:54to have some more struggles to start the game. But
- 3:56I think the right decision would be to plug him
- 3:59in as the starting corner. There's been a lot of
- 4:02folks who are willing to give grace to a lot
- 4:05of the other players on the team because the first
- 4:09four weeks of the season more or less is an
- 4:11extension of the preseason. So if you're going to give
- 4:13grace to others, I think a Dori Jackson deserves that
- 4:16as well. The Eagles haven't had well. They don't play
- 4:19their starters in the preseason, so there's very limited opportunities
- 4:22for them to get game reps with one another training
- 4:25camp as a different ballgame. So yeah, I think you
- 4:28put them out there, you try to keep some sort
- 4:30of continuity. You put Drue mccooba back there as well,
- 4:32and try to get that secondary in place for a
- 4:35second consecutive game and see how they fare. Now, I'm
- 4:38not suggesting that if Dori Jackson isn't struggling that they
- 4:41should turn that they shouldn't turn to Jacoreyan Bennett. You
- 4:44have to see what he can do as well, especially
- 4:47if you're not getting the production from that spot. Before
- 4:50you go out and look elsewhere down the line before
- 4:53the trade that lined, I think they have to see
- 4:55what they have in Jacorey and Bennett first. But yeah,
- 4:57I would start at Dory Jackson.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Sunday, all right, Andrew to check us with his football
- 5:01at four A big factor in the game in the
- 5:03Super Bowl obviously was the Eagles pass rush, but they
- 5:06didn't blitz. Forty two dropbacks sacked six times. No blitzes
- 5:11in the game, but two and a half by Joshua
- 5:14two by Milton Williams. They're not here anymore. Can the
- 5:17Eagles have to seem a similar game plan get to
- 5:20Mahomes without blitzing.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yes. With Jalen Carter in the mix, that obviously changes
- 5:26this dynamic and the whole complexion of the Eagles defense
- 5:29pushing the pocket from the middle, moving him off his spot,
- 5:31forcing him to be hasty with his reads. But I
- 5:36mean the pass rush in totality, it turns at the
- 5:39edge rushers. They do leave something to be desired. It's
- 5:42something that we've talked about dating back to training camp,
- 5:45even before training camp. I'm bullish on the two starters
- 5:48and Nolan Smith and jaloks Hunt, but they just signed
- 5:51it in the league in his eleventh season right now
- 5:54to bolster that group because they weren't getting enough inspired
- 5:58play from josh who I thought had a good opener,
- 6:02aziz O Julari obo Okoronkwell, and they're trying to fortify
- 6:05that area that's gonna be key. But I think Jalen
- 6:08Carter rather opens things up for everyone to really feast.
- 6:12So it's kind of hard to really base the the
- 6:15edge rusher group without Jalen Carter in the mix. In
- 6:18a game setting, I think you're going to see a
- 6:20lot more pressure on the homes and that's gonna have
- 6:22to be key to get off to a fast start
- 6:24offense defensively.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Andrew, like, I don't know how much of the
- 6:28Pro football focused numbers you're into or take stock in,
- 6:30but josh ushe was the number one pass rush win
- 6:34rate guy this past weekend, and Nolan Smith was in
- 6:37the top like ten as well. So does that tell
- 6:40a better story that the Eagles pass russ was better
- 6:42than maybe the Naked Eye says.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there is something to be said for that.
- 6:48I don't weigh the PFF grades too heavily. I kind
- 6:53of go based off the tape and what I've seen,
- 6:55But I do believe that that the Jalen Carter effect
- 6:59is obviously very real and you're going to see other
- 7:02players be able to reap the benefits as a result,
- 7:04because teams have to account for Jalen Carter I thought
- 7:07josh Hushe, to your point, just based solely on the
- 7:09eye test and not looking at any other metrics, had
- 7:12a good game, and he didn't play a ton, So
- 7:14sometimes I think that skews the numbers. He didn't play
- 7:17a ton. The Eagles don't use a lot of rotation
- 7:19in terms of their edge rushers. But when he was
- 7:22out there, I saw the first and explosiveness that you
- 7:26were hoping to see that josh Ushe of twenty twenty
- 7:29two perhaps, and Nolan Smith I thought had a better
- 7:32game than Jayalox Hunt and the opener, but that's gonna
- 7:36I think the more reps that that group gets, that
- 7:38young contingent of Nolan Smith and Jalox Hunt, the more
- 7:41reps that they get, the better they're going to be
- 7:43and the faster they'll play, and they'll have a different
- 7:46ways to combat offensive tackles. So I'm not necessarily worried
- 7:49about that, and I do think that Jalen Carter and
- 7:51having that full complement of defensive lineman should open things
- 7:55up for them as well.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You anticipate Zadarius Smith having a big role. How do
- 8:01you kind of view him in that signing and fitting
- 8:03in here well?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Minor role to start. Yesterday, he mentioned that he hadn't
- 8:08put pads on since January eighteen. Seemed to be chomping
- 8:11at the bit. Of course, that was in the playoff
- 8:13game with the Lions when they lost at the Commanders.
- 8:16But what I think is going to happen is it's
- 8:20going to take maybe a I do think he's going
- 8:22to play Sunday, but I think it may take a
- 8:24little bit of time for him to get fully onboarded
- 8:27into the finer intricacies of that defense. And yes, this
- 8:30is a player who on a six different team, He's
- 8:33played a lot of different schemes. But I still think
- 8:36that you have to account for that quote unquote ramp
- 8:39up period. He mentioned that he was a little bit
- 8:41winded during individuals yesterday, but then once they got to
- 8:45team period, he was rounding back into form. So he's
- 8:48a veteran, he'll be ready to go. I just don't
- 8:50think initially right off the bat, he's going to play
- 8:53a ton, But when the dust settles, he's going to
- 8:56be the Eagles third edge rusher, and I do believe
- 8:58have a pretty prominent role.
- 9:01Speaker 1: All Right, Andrew, Let's flip over and look a little
- 9:04bit on the offensive side of the ball here. Dallas Goddard.
- 9:07Obviously on the injury report, there's some thoughts that he
- 9:10may not be able to play. How big of a
- 9:12loss would that be. He did have seven catches in
- 9:15the game on Thursday night.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a big loss. For if he
- 9:21can't go, that's going to be a big loss. I
- 9:24feel like we say this every year, but it felt
- 9:26like we were primed for the Dallas Goddard awakening and
- 9:29we still very much well may see that. But to
- 9:33not have him we talked about seven targets, seven receptions,
- 9:36forty four yards. He was building on that training camp
- 9:39chemistry with Jalen Hurts. He adds another dimension to the
- 9:42passing attack because you have to be mindful of the
- 9:44middle of the field. Thought Jalen Hurts showed some willingness
- 9:48to throw the ball over the middle of the field
- 9:50in between the hashes there and Dallas got it is
- 9:53going to be a big part of that. But to
- 9:54not have him there, now you're looking at Grant Calcatira,
- 9:57who is a five pass catcher, doesn't give you much
- 10:00as a blocker. He's played plenty over the years because
- 10:03Goddard Smith's time. But then you have Kylon Branson who
- 10:07can be a movable piece offensively. They don't have a
- 10:12third tight end. They have a couple on the practice
- 10:14squad and Cameron Latsu, who by the way, is wearing
- 10:16number thirty six now and EJ. Jenkins. So that yeah,
- 10:20I mean, I think from a passing game perspective, Grand
- 10:24Calcata is going to be able to be just finding
- 10:26a spot filling, but they're going to miss the blocking
- 10:29prowess in the overall well roundedness of Dallas Goddard's game
- 10:33if he can't go Andrew.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Obviously Bigsby's here as well, another running back, but that
- 10:39means Shipley's out now not a big role. But does
- 10:41Bigsby step into the Shipley role? Does Dylan get bumped
- 10:45up and have a bigger role? How do you read this?
- 10:47Tank Bigsby trade in the impact he might have for
- 10:50this offense in this team.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so kind of similar to Darius Smith. I'm expecting
- 10:56initially Aj Dillon to take on a more expanded role,
- 11:00but eventually have that become Tank Bigsby because he just
- 11:03gives you more dynamic qualities. He's someone who has two
- 11:07years remaining on his contract, so he's going to be
- 11:10part of the team for the foreseeable future. That's why
- 11:12they gave up what they gave up to get them.
- 11:14But you know, we're joining the team with just a
- 11:18handful of days to go. I'm not so sure that
- 11:20it's realistic to expect an expanded workload from a running
- 11:24back perspective, but Mike, I am expecting him to get
- 11:27the looks as the primary kick returner along with John Metchi.
- 11:31But Tank Bigsby, that's one of his allures is that
- 11:35they're going to explore that area of his game. So
- 11:39for a week two I would say Aj Dillon, we'll
- 11:41see more of a workload out of the backfield, But
- 11:44eventually Bigsby and when everything, when all players are fully healthy,
- 11:48I would expect will Shipway to still be the two
- 11:51because he just adds something different in terms of the
- 11:54receiving element.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you know, you saw right off the
- 11:57bat in week one Andrew the effect of new kickoff
- 12:00rules and why a guy like Bigsby was probably targeted
- 12:03by Philadelphia.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I always say like that was part of it.
- 12:08But you don't give up a fifth and a sixth
- 12:10round pick purely for a kickoff returner, obviously having two
- 12:13years remaining on this rookie deal, and he's a player
- 12:17who is younger and has similar dimensions or as similar
- 12:21skill set. I should say to aj Dillon, so that
- 12:25you know you're looking towards next year. You have Saquon
- 12:28Barkley willship Way in Tank Bigsby. That's a pretty good
- 12:30staple of running backs. I think it was also made
- 12:33with that in mind. But also you're right, Mike that
- 12:35that that inside zone look that you get on kickoff
- 12:38returns that the Eagles run it and getting that downhill
- 12:42approach I think is certainly something that Michael Klay seemed
- 12:45excited about, the Eagle special teams coordinator, and the I
- 12:48mean that that the Eagles are looking to really maximize
- 12:51that role. It's not just because of the new kickoff rule.
- 12:55There's ways that you can have an advantage and field position,
- 12:57and they're going to leave no stone unturned and doing
- 13:00that in Tank, bigsh He's going to be a big
- 13:01part of it, all right.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Last one, we're looking at the offense here, Landon Dickerson.
- 13:05He was back at practice, he was on the injury
- 13:07report as a limited participant, but losing him would be
- 13:10probably a big blow. He's, you know, obviously a key
- 13:13cog in there, but Brett Toath would he be the
- 13:16left guard if they could not, if Dickerson could not go,
- 13:18Where do you expect Dickerson to give it a go?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, at Thursday. We're at Thursday right now, so I'll
- 13:24have to see how the rest of the week plays out.
- 13:26But right now, I mean Landon Dickerson as tough as now.
- 13:29It's just when you think that he may be sidelined
- 13:31for a few days or even a game, he gives
- 13:33it a go. So as long as he's out there
- 13:36in a limited capacity, he doesn't have any setbacks leading
- 13:39up to the game. I'm expecting him to give it
- 13:41a go. It's certainly encouraging to see him out there Wednesday,
- 13:45and yeah, if he can't, Brett Toath would be the
- 13:49logical replacement. You saw that the Eagles in game solution
- 13:53was Brett Toath in the opener. And he's a veteran,
- 13:55he's entering his he's in his seventh NFL season and
- 13:58a trusted option for the team and Jeff Stotlin. He's
- 14:01really taken to Jeff Stotlin's coaching. So for a game,
- 14:05or even a handful of stabs in a pinch, I
- 14:07think Brett Toath would be the guy.
- 14:09Speaker 1: All Right, Super Bowl rematch. Of course you could listen
- 14:11to it right here on ninety seven three ESPN Football
- 14:13at four Andrew to check O, what is the biggest
- 14:16key in this game that you have your eye on
- 14:18this week? Eagles Chiefs the rematch.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Bearing down on Patrick Mahomes and not allowing him to
- 14:24create yards with his legs, but also not making the
- 14:27same mistake that the Dallas Cowboys made, Mike and having
- 14:31contained with your past Russ, not getting too wide because
- 14:33that's where you tend to surrender bit those big plays
- 14:36that that's going to be paramount playing discipline and fundamentally
- 14:39sound against someone like Patrick Mahomes who could make a
- 14:42ton of plays outside of structure.
- 14:43Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on that. And of course, Andrew
- 14:45to Checko on the guys football at four. All next week,
- 14:47we're getting you ready for Chiefs this week, Rams next week.
- 14:50Pretty big game. The loser, Chiefs would go to zero
- 14:53to two. Philadelphia has to follow up with the Rams
- 14:56and the Bucks. Big game for both these teams on
- 14:58Sunday in Arrowhead. Listen to it all right here on
- 15:01ninety seven three ESPN. That's Andrew to Checko and you
- 15:03can listen to him on the Inside of the Birds podcast.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Thanks Bud, Thanks Mike.
