- 0:00Take your Bible if you would please, and turn to John Chapter
- 0:021. And we are looking at the legacy
- 0:04of John the Baptist. It's a lasting legacy.
- 0:09It's lasted some 2000 years because what John lived before
- 0:17the world, he left behind for all of us to read and see and
- 0:24hear and understand. His legacy made a tremendous
- 0:29impact. Although his ministry was only
- 0:32for 18 months, but this is the greatest man ever born of a
- 0:39woman. And so if that's the case, what
- 0:43kind of legacy did he leave behind?
- 0:46And how do we evaluate our life in light of his life that we
- 0:50might understand our legacy today?
- 0:55The Bible tells us that that John came to testify to the
- 0:59light, came to give a testimony about the light.
- 1:06He said I am not the light, but I've come to testify about the
- 1:10light. And six times in John chapter
- 1:14one it talks about His testimony, how He would testify
- 1:19before the world. Jesus would sum it up this way.
- 1:25In John 5 verse #33 says you have sent John or you have sent
- 1:31to John, and He has testified to the truth.
- 1:36Verse 35 He was the lamp that was burning and was shining, and
- 1:42you were willing to rejoice for a while in His light.
- 1:48John was burning brightly. John was shining splendidly.
- 1:55There was something about John that that made him the man that
- 1:58he was as he came to testify. And he would become the first of
- 2:05eight witnesses in John's Gospel that John would refer to.
- 2:09The Apostle John would refer to when it came to a testimony
- 2:13before the world, and John was that great prophet, that great,
- 2:18that great priest, that that great protester of life.
- 2:24He was a prophet. Everyone who knew he was a
- 2:26prophet that gave him credibility.
- 2:29He was in the line of of the priesthood.
- 2:31Everybody knew his father Zacharias, who was a priest.
- 2:34And so for all practical purposes, John was a priest that
- 2:37gave him believability, but he was a protester.
- 2:42He lived a life that was the antithesis to the religious
- 2:48establishment of the day. The way he dressed, the way he
- 2:52spoke, the way he lived was a protest against all of that.
- 2:58And that that gave him integrity, which allowed him to,
- 3:02to be the kind of testimony, the kind of witness that would speak
- 3:05volumes for the claims of Christ.
- 3:11So this is the man John the Baptist and his legacy can be
- 3:13wrapped up in 3 words, 3 words that you can apply to your life
- 3:20as you will see as we go through this, this week or last week,
- 3:24this weekend and next week, of course, to help you understand
- 3:27the legacy of, of John the Baptist.
- 3:32The first word is simply presentation.
- 3:36Second word is preparation, and the third word is proclamation.
- 3:44He presented #1 the preeminence of the light #2 He prepared the
- 3:51pathway to the Lord, and #3 he was the one who proclaimed.
- 4:00He proclaimed the person of the Christ.
- 4:05That is the legacy of John the Baptist, but it all begins with
- 4:10the presentation. Because he was the one who
- 4:13presented the preeminence of the light.
- 4:19He was the one who would show how great the light was and he
- 4:25would shine brightly. He would shine splendidly as he
- 4:33lived his legacy. So the question we asked last
- 4:38week was how did he present the pre eminence of the light and
- 4:45why did he present the pre eminence of the light?
- 4:50Those are the two questions we ask.
- 4:53So the first question, how we began last week.
- 4:58But by showing you that he presented it lovingly and
- 5:01longingly, that there was a, a, a, a loving message that John
- 5:07would give. Love is giving people what they
- 5:09need, not what they want. They needed the gospel.
- 5:13They needed to know who the king was.
- 5:15They needed to know that the Kingdom was upon them.
- 5:20They needed to know what it meant to be in the Kingdom.
- 5:23When you love people, you tell them the truth about the King
- 5:27and his Kingdom. So he gave it to him lovingly
- 5:30and he gave it to them longingly because there was a longing in
- 5:33his heart, in his soul, because he had waited a long time, some
- 5:3830 years to present the Messiah and he was longing for the
- 5:43Kingdom to come. He would say repent, for the
- 5:47Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Like every Jew was longing for
- 5:51the King to come and and set up his Kingdom.
- 5:55That's why in Luke 3 it says they were, they were living a
- 5:57life of expectation. They were expecting the the
- 6:02coming one, the expected one to arrive the Messiah so that the
- 6:07Kingdom would come. And that's why they, they came
- 6:10down from Jerusalem and from all Judea in in the thousands to be
- 6:15baptized by John of the Jordan River that they were expecting
- 6:20the king and his Kingdom. And so John who, who longingly
- 6:25was, was wanting to present this king to them.
- 6:28He had lived in anticipation his whole life for this very moment,
- 6:33not knowing that it would only be 18 months.
- 6:35He had no no clue that would be the length of his ministry.
- 6:43Just think, spending 30 years preparing to be the forerunner
- 6:48for the Messiah, only to last 18 months and then be beheaded.
- 6:59That was his life. And yet he would present the
- 7:04preeminence of the light lovingly and longingly.
- 7:09He would do it #2 instinctively and incessantly.
- 7:13Talked about these last week. Instinctively, because he was
- 7:15filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb.
- 7:18He was controlled by the Spirit of God.
- 7:20It became part and parcel to his everyday living.
- 7:24So by by by natural instinct, he would, he would just bring forth
- 7:30with the gospel because the Spirit of God would move him to
- 7:34do so. He would do it incessantly.
- 7:35We showed you last week where in John one there are three days in
- 7:39succession, in John one day, one day, 2 day three, and every day
- 7:43this is what he was doing. Why?
- 7:44Because this is what he did all the time.
- 7:48John just gives us a glimpse of his daily routine.
- 7:52This is something he did incessantly.
- 7:53It was something he did just once a week or or once a month.
- 7:56It was something he did every single day.
- 7:58This was his ministry. This was his life.
- 8:01For him to shine brightly, he had to shine every single day.
- 8:06So he did it lovingly and longingly.
- 8:08He did it instinctively and incessantly, and he did it
- 8:12graphically and gracefully. Graphically, he would say in in
- 8:19Matthew chapter 3, when he saw the Pharisees and Sadducees
- 8:23coming to him, he would call them a brood of Vipers.
- 8:25You, you pack of snakes. That's a very graphic way to to
- 8:30describe the the religious establishment of the day.
- 8:34He would tell them who warned you to flee from the wrath to
- 8:37come. Why?
- 8:39Because I baptize you with water.
- 8:40But there's one who's going to come and baptize you with with
- 8:43fire, and you need to be careful.
- 8:48He would call out Herod in a sin.
- 8:51Herod was the king, but he would call out his immoral
- 8:55relationship with his wife that he stole from his brother and
- 8:59said that you're living in sin. And Luke's account tells us that
- 9:04he reprimanded the king. Why?
- 9:10Because he would graphically expose the sin that was before
- 9:14him. You know, we don't do that
- 9:17today. We, we want a soft coat sin.
- 9:20We instead of calling adultery adultery, we call it an affair,
- 9:26as if to, to give it some kind of soft coding to sin.
- 9:33We, we don't, we don't call homosexuals homosexuals.
- 9:36We call them people with an alternate lifestyle, but the
- 9:41Bible calls them homosexuals. The Bible calls them effeminate
- 9:44persons. The Bible calls out the immoral
- 9:47person. It calls out the the the
- 9:49slanderer and the gossip. In fact, it says in in Ephesians
- 9:535 and in Galatians 5 and in Revelation chapter 22, it gives
- 9:56the list of those who who will not inherit the Kingdom of
- 10:00heaven. And they're named graphically in
- 10:03the Scriptures. In fact, this is what Jesus
- 10:06says. I think this is very interesting
- 10:09about our our Lord. In Matthew 23 He says woe, woe
- 10:14to you scribes and and Pharisees hypocrites, for you clean the
- 10:19outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full
- 10:24of robbery and self indulgence. The blind Pharisee first clean
- 10:29the inside of the cup and of the dish so that the outside of it
- 10:33may become clean. Also.
- 10:34Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you
- 10:38are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear
- 10:41beautiful, but in the inside they are full of dead men's
- 10:44bones and all uncleanness. So you 2 outwardly appear
- 10:48righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and
- 10:52lawlessness. Jesus called out sinners because
- 10:59of their hypocrisy. John would do the same thing, so
- 11:04when he would shine the light, he would do it graphically
- 11:08because man needs to know that he's separated from God, that
- 11:11that he's a Sinner. For without knowing that, you'll
- 11:14never see your need for a Savior.
- 11:18You must understand that you are separated from God and that your
- 11:21works are are worthless before him.
- 11:26And John made sure of that instead of Jesus.
- 11:29But he did it gracefully. He didn't do it arrogantly,
- 11:35proudly. He didn't do it in a way that
- 11:39that would that would be harsh, but he did it in a way that
- 11:46would show grace. Why?
- 11:50Because Herod needed to repent. Herod needed to know that his
- 11:56relationship was immoral, that he was an adulterer.
- 12:01So he called him out the Pharisees needed to know that
- 12:04they were hypocrites that they lived one way on the outside,
- 12:09but on the inside they were like dead men's bones and they they
- 12:15needed to know the truth and and grace is is showing them that
- 12:20look it once you know that you're a Sinner, it's only God's
- 12:22grace that can save you. That's it can't save yourself.
- 12:28That's what I love what it says over in in the book of
- 12:30Colossians the the 4th chapter when Paul would say these words.
- 12:35Colossians 4 verse #5 Consider yourselves with wisdom or
- 12:39conduct yourselves, excuse me, with wisdom toward outsiders,
- 12:41making the most of the opportunity by redeeming the
- 12:44time. Let your speech always be with
- 12:46grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how
- 12:53you should respond to each person.
- 12:56Graceful speech is grace that is is seasoned with salt.
- 13:02And salt's a preservative salt, salt's a purifier.
- 13:06But salt also causes great pain in open wounds.
- 13:11And so when you speak the truth and love, and you speak the
- 13:14truth gracefully, those whose wounds are open, it's going to
- 13:18sting badly. And yet they need to understand
- 13:23the truth about how our Lord has come to save them from their
- 13:27sin. That was all of last week.
- 13:32That's John the Baptist. How did he do it?
- 13:35Lovingly, longingly. He did it instinctively,
- 13:39incessantly. He did it graphically and
- 13:42gracefully, but he also did it heartily and humbly.
- 13:49Heartily and humbly. He he was crying in the
- 13:53wilderness. John didn't do things half
- 13:57heartedly. He did them full heartedly.
- 14:03He was all heart. He was all in.
- 14:06He he wasn't partially into his ministry.
- 14:08He wasn't partially into into into preaching the gospel.
- 14:11He was all in for the Messiah. He was all in and what God
- 14:16called him to do. So you do it with all of his
- 14:20might. That's what Solomon says in
- 14:22Ecclesiastes 9 verse #10 whatever your hand finds to do,
- 14:26do it with all of your might, all your might.
- 14:30Paul would say it this way in the book of Colossians,
- 14:34Colossians chapter 3, verse 23. He says, whatever you do, do
- 14:40heartily. As for the Lord, not unto man,
- 14:47knowing that you will receive a reward from the Lord heartily
- 14:55with all of his heart. So when he came as a voice
- 14:59crying in the wilderness, when he would speak forth the truth
- 15:02of the gospel, he did it in such a way that he would, he would
- 15:07shout the truth. He wanted people to know the
- 15:10truth, and so he did it with all of his heart.
- 15:13But he did it humbly. Humbly.
- 15:17He says I'm just a voice. I'm just a voice.
- 15:22He never referenced his father as a priest to give him some
- 15:26kind of clout with the other priests.
- 15:29He could have done that. Well, I'm a son of a priest,
- 15:32just like, just like you are. No, he didn't say that.
- 15:36So I'm just a voice of one crying in the wilderness.
- 15:40He says. I'm not worthy to to loosen the
- 15:43straps of my Savior sandals. I'm not even worthy to do the
- 15:48most menial task. And in John chapter 3 verse #30
- 15:52he says he must increase and I must decrease.
- 15:56What a great testimony. The reason he he he would shine
- 16:01so brightly is because he didn't want the light to be focused on
- 16:06himself. He wanted the light to be
- 16:10focused on the Christ. He wanted to put forth the
- 16:13Christ today. We, we, we get so enamored with
- 16:18us. You know, I'm always leery of
- 16:21those people who name their ministries after their own name,
- 16:25that that's a very dangerous thing to do.
- 16:28Shouldn't do that because it's not about you.
- 16:30It's about the ministry of Christ.
- 16:31It's about putting Christ on display.
- 16:35There's so many times we want to take credit for someone coming
- 16:37to faith or take credit for someone's spiritual growth or or
- 16:41take credit for this or take credit for that.
- 16:44You can't take credit because it's a spiritual work done by
- 16:48the Spirit of God in a supernatural kind of way in the
- 16:51lives of people. We are just voices in the
- 16:54wilderness. We are just vessels to be used
- 16:58by God. And here is John very heartedly,
- 17:03but yet very humbly presenting the preeminence of the Messiah.
- 17:12And then, then lastly, he did it truthfully and tenaciously
- 17:21truthfully. The Bible says in in Luke 3 that
- 17:25he, he preached the gospel. What's the gospel?
- 17:30The gospel is about the king of his Kingdom.
- 17:33And so he, he spoke the truth about the king.
- 17:37He spoke the truth about the Kingdom.
- 17:39He spoke the truth about entry into the Kingdom.
- 17:42You got to repent and he was the one who who with many
- 17:48exhortations. The Bible says in in Luke's
- 17:50account that he would speak to the people he would he would
- 17:56quote Isaiah 40 verse #3 Why? Because He wanted to speak
- 18:00truthfully as to what he was doing and why he was doing it,
- 18:04that he had the support of the authority of Scripture behind
- 18:07what he was doing. And so John was one who who came
- 18:11to speak the truth. That's why in John 533 we read,
- 18:14we read earlier that Jesus said that John came to testify to the
- 18:18truth. By the way, in John 1837, Christ
- 18:23before Pilate said these words, I've come to testify to the
- 18:29truth. You see, when you shine brightly
- 18:34for the Lord, it's all about the truth.
- 18:37And Christ came and John came to testify to the truth.
- 18:40The truth about what? Truth about heaven, Truth about
- 18:44hell, Truth about mercy and grace and justice, the truth
- 18:50about sin and salvation. The truth about the Christ
- 18:55Christ is the truth. So you want to present Christ as
- 18:59the truth. So John would, would shine
- 19:02brightly, truthfully as well as tenaciously.
- 19:07In other words, he never backed down, he never quit, he never
- 19:12gave up. He was resilient, he was
- 19:17tenacious. He, he was holding on for dear
- 19:20life because as John one says, he came to testify to the light
- 19:28so that all may believe. And he knew that if he didn't
- 19:32stand strong and didn't live a courageous life and speak forth
- 19:39the truth tenaciously, without reservation, without backing
- 19:44down, it would not be effective. That's how he did it.
- 19:52He came to testify as a prophet, as a priest, as a protester.
- 19:56How? By By speaking lovingly and
- 20:03longingly. By speaking instinctively and
- 20:07incessantly, graphically and gracefully, heartily and humbly,
- 20:15truthfully and tenaciously, you want to leave a lasting legacy.
- 20:19You need to present the pre eminence of the lights.
- 20:25Let's see the second question. Why?
- 20:28Well, using the same outline LIGHT, if you were following
- 20:34along and you didn't get that, I'm sorry, you should have got
- 20:37that, but use the same word, light, LIGHT.
- 20:40Let me show you how he did this and why he did it.
- 20:46Why did he do it #1 because he loved.
- 20:50He loved the person of God. He loved his God.
- 20:57Paul would say that the love of Christ compels me.
- 21:02Paul knew Christ. I mean, excuse me, yeah.
- 21:06Paul didn't know Christ, excuse me, but he didn't know Christ.
- 21:08But John knew Christ. John was the cousin of Jesus.
- 21:14He was his cousin, so John knew him.
- 21:18I'm sure that they would get together as they were growing up
- 21:20at different times. The Bible didn't tell us that,
- 21:22but because they were related. I'm sure that the different
- 21:24times that they got together, but he loved them outside of a
- 21:30familial relationship. He loved them because of who God
- 21:35himself was. He loved the person of God.
- 21:42That was his motivation. Why would he do all this?
- 21:47Why would he speak against the religious establishment?
- 21:50Why would he protest against all that was that was taking place?
- 21:53Why? Why would he speak so loudly and
- 21:56so graphically against sin? Because he loved the Lord, he
- 22:01loved him. We love him because he first
- 22:04loved us and John loved the person of God.
- 22:11You know one of the the greatest hindrances to to you and me in
- 22:15presenting the preeminence of the light is there is there a
- 22:18lack of love for the Lord? If you love him, you want others
- 22:24to love him. You want others to see him as
- 22:27you see him, know him as you know him because you love him so
- 22:31and so you tell others about him.
- 22:33This is John. He loved his God.
- 22:39He wanted others to love him and that that's why, that's why at
- 22:45the end of Christ's ministry, after his death, burial,
- 22:47resurrection, he appeared to, to Peter on the on the shore of the
- 22:52Sea of Galilee. And he asked him, what question,
- 22:55Peter, do you love me? Why Peter, you're going to be
- 22:59carrying the gospel to the Gentiles, to the Jews.
- 23:04You're going to open the door to the Gentiles.
- 23:06But I got to know, do you love me, Peter?
- 23:09Because if you don't love me, your, your motivation is going
- 23:12to wane. You're not going to be able to
- 23:14stand strong for me. Do you love me, Peter?
- 23:18Because I want you to follow me. You're going to die for me.
- 23:22But you got to represent me. Do you love me?
- 23:26And that's what Christ asked us. Do you love me enough to present
- 23:31me the light in a World of Darkness?
- 23:37Because if you want to leave Alasia Legacy, that's what you
- 23:39got to do. But you won't do it if you don't
- 23:43love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul, all
- 23:45your mind and all your strength. That's why Christ said in
- 23:51Matthew's Gospel, the 10th chapter, that he who loves
- 23:56father and mother more than me is not worthy of me.
- 24:00He who loves son or daughter more than me is not is not
- 24:03worthy of me. Do you love someone else more
- 24:06than you love me? Because if you do, you're not
- 24:10going to present me accurately, you're not going to present me
- 24:13graphically, you're not going to present me truthfully because
- 24:16you don't want to upset anybody, but I need you to love me more
- 24:21than anything else. Christ asks.
- 24:26Christ demands. This was John.
- 24:32The Bible says in Luke 144 that when Mary came to Elizabeth,
- 24:38when Elizabeth was six months pregnant, that John would leap
- 24:45in his mother's womb. I mean, that is a unique and,
- 24:51and supernatural kind of thing, but but he would leap in his
- 24:54mother's mother's womb. He was saying, John 134, this is
- 25:00the Son of God. This is not, he's not my cousin,
- 25:04somebody I'm related to. This is the Son of God.
- 25:07He, he, the Son of God, is the Lamb of God.
- 25:11He understands the the importance of the atonement.
- 25:14He understands the importance of sacrifice.
- 25:16He understands the importance of the fact that this one he grew
- 25:20up with is God in the flesh. He loved the person of God #2 He
- 25:33was inspired by the call of God. He was inspired by the call of
- 25:41God. You can even say he was incited
- 25:45by the call of God. The word of the Lord came to
- 25:49John where in the wilderness. The word of the Lord came to
- 25:54John and God would call him into the ministry like Jeremiah, like
- 26:04Elijah, like Isaiah, those great prophets of old, they they were
- 26:09called by God into the ministry and and knowing that John had
- 26:14been personally called by the living God to now go preach
- 26:22about the king and his Kingdom, present the preeminence of the
- 26:27light. This is your job, John, Go do
- 26:30it. It would inspire him because He
- 26:36was simply called by God. The Bible tells us that we had
- 26:43to proclaim the excellencies, excellencies of Him who has
- 26:47called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.
- 26:53The reason we do it is because of Our Calling, hand picked,
- 26:57hand chosen by God to be used by Him.
- 27:03That in and of itself is a motivating factor.
- 27:06This is why John did it. He was inspired by, by, by the
- 27:10call of call of God upon his life.
- 27:13We told you earlier that that the Bible says that that call is
- 27:17a heavenly calling. Hebrews 31.
- 27:20It's a holy calling. Second Timothy one verse #9 and
- 27:24it is a high calling. Philippians 3 verse #14 we've
- 27:30been called with the heavenly high and holy calling that
- 27:36should inspire everyone of us to present the preeminence of the
- 27:41light. And this was John, John the
- 27:47Baptist. Romans 11 verse #29 says that
- 27:51the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.
- 27:57God has gifted you and called you.
- 28:01He's not going to go back on that call.
- 28:02Thank you. If He's called you into His
- 28:06Kingdom, He's going to use you for His glory, because that call
- 28:09is irrevocable. So #1 he loved the person of God
- 28:16#2 he was inspired by the call of God, and #3 he was guided by
- 28:22the Spirit of God. He was guided by the Spirit of
- 28:27God. This is how He did it.
- 28:30This is why He did it. Why?
- 28:32Because he was filled with the Spirit of God from his mother's
- 28:37womb. No other creature, no other
- 28:40individual has ever had that happen to them, but John has.
- 28:44But when you, when you are called by God into his Kingdom
- 28:47and you're born again, the Spirit of God infuses you.
- 28:53The Spirit of God takes up residence in you and therefore
- 28:57we we have this spirit, Paul says and second Timothy one
- 29:00verse #7 God has not given us the spirit of timidity, but but
- 29:03of power and of love and of of sound mind or self-discipline.
- 29:08Will we have this spirit that's one of power, this spirit that's
- 29:13one of love and self-discipline and it moves and and guides us
- 29:18each and every step of the way. That's why the Bible says walk
- 29:21in the spirit so you don't fulfill the lust of the flesh.
- 29:24We are to be filled with the Spirit of God.
- 29:26Ephesians 518 controlled by God's spirit, dominated by God's
- 29:30Spirit under the the operation of the Spirit of God.
- 29:34Because when God's spirit is guiding us, everything around us
- 29:38changes because we are to respond to people in the way the
- 29:42Spirit will respond to them. Here's John filled with the
- 29:46Spirit from his mother's womb. Remember the Old Testament, the
- 29:50Spirit of God would would come upon people in the Old Testament
- 29:53to do certain things and accomplish certain objectives,
- 29:58but didn't dwell them. But in the New Testament, the
- 30:03whole mystery that was concealed in the old but revealed in the
- 30:06newest Christ in you, the hope of glory that the triune nature
- 30:10of God dwells within us and lives within us and moves us to
- 30:14action. This is how we we know we can
- 30:17accomplish what God's called us to do.
- 30:19He's given us all the resources to accomplish the objective
- 30:23because He is the resource. The Spirit is God himself who
- 30:31lives within us. It doesn't.
- 30:34It's not a spirit of timidity, of fear, but one of power, one
- 30:40of love and one of self-discipline.
- 30:45That was John. He was guided by the spirit of
- 30:49the living God because he was inspired by the call of God.
- 30:56But the heart of it all, he loved the person of God.
- 31:02But know this number four, his hope or he hoped in the promises
- 31:09of God. He hoped in the promises of God.
- 31:16Hope is a is a is a word of anticipation, knowing that God
- 31:21will fulfill his promises. If you go back to to Luke's
- 31:26gospel in Luke chapter 1, remember the the song of
- 31:31Zacharias. It was all about the fulfillment
- 31:35of prophecy. It was all about the hope of
- 31:38Israel. It was all about the hope of the
- 31:40Davidic covenant and it's fulfillment, the Abrahamic
- 31:43covenant, it's fulfillment, the new covenant and it's
- 31:47fulfillment. The king is coming.
- 31:52He's coming to present the Kingdom, and my son is a
- 31:55forerunner to the king and his Kingdom.
- 31:58That means Davidic truth is going to come about.
- 32:02That means Abrahamic truth is going to come to fruition.
- 32:05That means that the new covenant is here.
- 32:10That's how he speaks. So he says in verse 68 of Luke
- 32:161, blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us
- 32:22and accomplished redemption for his people.
- 32:29He's visited us. That was the hope that the
- 32:33Messiah would come. And it's raised up a horde of
- 32:37salvation in the House of David His servant, as He spoke by the
- 32:40mouth of the holy prophets from of old salvation from our
- 32:44enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
- 32:46To show mercy toward our fathers and to remember His holy
- 32:49covenant, The oath which He swore to Abraham our Father, to
- 32:54grant us that we being rescued from the land of our enemies,
- 32:58might serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness
- 33:01before Him all our days. And you, child, will be called
- 33:06the prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the
- 33:11Lord to prepare His ways, to give to His people the knowledge
- 33:14of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, Because of the
- 33:17tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise from the High
- 33:21will visit us to shine upon those who sit in darkness in the
- 33:27shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
- 33:32All that was in hope of all the promises that God had given the
- 33:38Old Testament. And so John is is raised that
- 33:43way. He knows his father son song.
- 33:46I'm sure by now John is John's father is, is not alive.
- 33:51I mean, John's father was in his 80s when he was born.
- 33:54So 30 years later, that would make him over 100 years of age.
- 33:57I'm not sure that Zacharias lived that long.
- 34:00And so he would remember the, the, the song of his father.
- 34:03He'd remember the words of his father.
- 34:06But as he studied the Old Testament, he would know during
- 34:08those 10 years plus in the wilderness and communion with
- 34:12his God, he would begin to understand the great prophetic
- 34:16fulfilment of the coming king. This Kingdom he was inspired by,
- 34:22by hope. He hoped in the promises of God.
- 34:27He believed in the promises of God.
- 34:31The king is here. He's coming with his Kingdom.
- 34:35Repent and believe in him. And This is why in Luke 7, John
- 34:41was so confounded. When he's in prison, he says the
- 34:45disciples to to ask Jesus are are you the Messiah?
- 34:49Are you the expected one? Are you the coming one?
- 34:51Or should we look for somebody else?
- 34:53Why? Because he was so certain that
- 34:55that the Messiah was there and the Kingdom would be presented
- 35:02and he would establish his Kingdom.
- 35:05But John did not know about how they would slay the one he
- 35:11pointed to. John didn't understand the whole
- 35:17second coming of the Messiah. He just knew about the coming
- 35:21King. This Kingdom, you and me, we
- 35:26present the premise of the light.
- 35:28Why? Why?
- 35:31Because we hope in the promises of God.
- 35:34That's why we pray. Our Father, who art in heaven,
- 35:39hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come.
- 35:43We're in hope of the coming Kingdom, the promises of God.
- 35:47We are in hope of his, his return again.
- 35:50That's that's why we, we tell others about, about the Christ.
- 35:54We want them to be a part of that coming Kingdom.
- 35:56We want them to know that Christ is going to come again.
- 35:59And so we tell them with passion, with drive and with
- 36:04sincerity, the King is going to come.
- 36:07He could come at any moment. Are you ready for him to arrive?
- 36:11That's how John and why John was so strong in this presentation
- 36:16of the King's Kingdom. We live in anticipation of the
- 36:21coming of the king. We long for his coming again.
- 36:26Our our hope is rooted in God. He is the God of hope and he
- 36:31gives us this glorious promises that tell us what's going to
- 36:36happen when he arrives again. Those are things that that move
- 36:41us to present the pre eminence of the light so important.
- 36:50So here is John. Why did he do what he did?
- 36:54He loved the person of God. He was inspired by the call of
- 37:00God. He was guided by the Spirit of
- 37:03God. He hoped in the promises of God.
- 37:09And lastly, he trusted in the Word of God.
- 37:16He would trust that God's Word would not return void.
- 37:23He trusted that what he would say concerning the king of this
- 37:27Kingdom would bring forth grapefruit.
- 37:32He trusted in God's Word. He believed what God's Word said
- 37:38I I love what what the Bible says and Psalm Psalm 39, verse
- 37:50number 7 and now Lord for what do I wait my hope is in you.
- 38:02John's hope was was in the Lord, but but he trusted in the word
- 38:09of the Lord. Remember Psalm 119, verse 4042?
- 38:18I will have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust
- 38:23in your word. Psalmist.
- 38:27Do that trust in the Word, verse 66 of Psalm 119.
- 38:35Teach me good discernment and knowledge, for I trust in Your
- 38:39commandments. Verse 1114 of Psalm 118.
- 38:47You are my hiding place in my shield.
- 38:49I trust Your word. I trust Your word Over in Second
- 38:59Samuel chapter 22 verse #31 David says As for God, his way
- 39:06is blameless. The word of the Lord is is
- 39:09proven, tested. He is a shield to all who take
- 39:14refuge in him. I would I would assume that John
- 39:21the Baptist knew about King David and knew about the words
- 39:25of Second Samuel 22. He could read them in the
- 39:28scrolls and he would trust in the word of the Lord.
- 39:37How about you? You want to leave a a lasting
- 39:40legacy. You got to shine bright for the
- 39:45Lord. You got to you got to present
- 39:51the light as preeminent in your life.
- 39:56And how do you do that? You do it lovingly and
- 40:00longingly. You.
- 40:02You do it instinctively and incessantly, graphically and
- 40:06gracefully. You do it in a way that's
- 40:11heartily and humbly, truthfully and tenaciously.
- 40:15Why? Why would you do that?
- 40:19Because you love the Lord. The love of Christ compels you.
- 40:25You love the person of God you're inspired by by the call
- 40:29of God, and you're guided by the Spirit of God.
- 40:35Therefore, you hope in the promises of God and you trust in
- 40:43the Word of God. You're not trusting in yourself,
- 40:47you're not trusting in your presentation, you're not
- 40:50trusting in the brightness of your light.
- 40:53You're just trusting in the Word of the living God, and you will
- 40:59be well on your way and leaving a lasting legacy that will last
- 41:04for generations to come, simply because you have presented the
- 41:08preeminence of the light #2 you prepare the pathway of the Lord.
- 41:21How do you do that? That's next week.
- 41:25Let's pray together, Father. We thank you Lord for today and
- 41:29the opportunity to give us to come before you.
- 41:32Our prayer, Lord, is that we would be the kind of people that
- 41:37present you brightly if you are preeminent.
- 41:41We are not your king, we are your subjects.
- 41:46Maybe we used by you in a way that honors your name until you
- 41:49come again, as you most surely will in Jesus name, Amen.
