[upbeat music] [laughs] I was, I was sort of debating about just drinking and listening to the whole song- [laughs]...
• 0:28
but I'll break in and start this. The Chewy's Lawn Chair Number 24. Um, went with the quiet music tonight. Lots to talk about. We haven't done this for a while. It's been... Since we did...
• 0:40
It's been almost two months since we've done one, and probably longer than that since you've been on. Yep. Um, it's just Brad and I tonight in the, in the shop, in the studio. Uh, Brad is in the chair.
• 0:49
I'll get a picture of him posted with Brad in the chair, because that's a first. You've never sat in the chair, have you? I don't think I've sat here during a podcast, but I've definitely sat in the chair.
• 1:00
Oh, you're probably right. You've probably been in there. Everybody just, everybody just comes in and plops their ass down in the chair automatically. It's just the way it goes.
• 1:06
Well, it's actually a pretty comfortable chair. It is. And then, and then, uh, there was a couple that came out to, to... I fixed a couple bikes for them, and they're actually thinking about buying a couple clunkers.
• 1:15
And she sent me, I don't know where the hell they're, they're at someplace in Wisconsin, and they, there was like a whole shitload of old school barber chairs. That'd be pretty cool, too. Oh, I know.
• 1:25
And they're, and those are even, like, uh, what's the bar in Superior that's got those? Uh- Anchor? Is that what it's called, The Anchor? The Anchor, yeah. Yeah. So, that's, that's got like a bunch of them.
• 1:38
And I thought the same thing, but you know how small it is in here. There's not room for it, really. Yep. Um, tonight, let's see. Well, since we haven't talked for a while, we've got shit to go over.
• 1:47
Um, uh, first thing I'm gonna throw out there is that last night, [laughs] on, when I was talking to the boys from Milwaukee, we have set a date. Uh, Rochester is gonna do a Santa Rampage December 3rd.
• 2:01
Uh, it's the same weekend as Milwaukee. Uh, I wasn't gonna do one. I was actually gonna go to Milwaukee this year, but we do it for Toys for Tots.
• 2:09
Um, I think that's an important thing and, and I, we get a freaking bob trailer full of toys, so- Yeah... not gonna back out on that. We're gonna do that again. You- Yeah. You guys, you guys have really grown that to be
• 2:22
something pretty special, so. Well, it's not a lot of riders. We're still at, like, a dozen or so. I mean, the first year was probably the most.
• 2:27
We had 40-some riders, but- Well, I think it's pretty cool to see the, the amount of toys and shit that you bring in, though, too, so. And I had to buy a new...
• 2:36
And so now this morning I'm scrambling to buy a new, uh, uh, Grinch outfit. Oh, yeah. 'Cause that's- Wonder why you gotta get a new one of those. [laughs] Yeah, that's kind of a gone deal.
• 2:45
[laughs] Well, that would be podcast number, probably number 13. Yep. I think. Wait, no. Chex is 13. Chex was 12. So, before that, so it'd be like- 12 or 11... 12 or 11, 12. Yeah.
• 2:57
Uh, if you wanna hear the story about how we wound up losing the mask. Yeah. Um, so yeah, we're gonna, we decided to do it. I mean, it's, it's a good thing. So, um, d- to, to...
• 3:08
Rochester and Milwaukee and some of the other bigger ones are December 3rd. December 10th is Madison, Wisconsin. And I think we're gonna do one in Decorah, although I won't be able to. I'll have a game. Yep.
• 3:22
So, um, that kinda screws that. We're- That one's right in the middle of hockey season. It is. And, and, and it's always worked out that that first weekend in December, I'd, I've never had a game.
• 3:30
That even when I had a game, it got canceled because of the snow storm, so. [laughs] Um, so- Perfect Santa Rampage weather. [laughs] Was. That w- the first one was a wreck.
• 3:39
[laughs] 'Cause we started out, it was like 40s, nice, and by the end of the night we had eight inches of really wet snow- Oh, boy... and three cracked ribs. I'm not doing well on this.
• 3:51
If you think about it- So, were all three of those yours? What? Or was there other people that cracked a rib? No, no, those are all mine. Oh. Those are just mine, yeah. I- You made it sound like it was- No...
• 3:59
three people that- Well, there might've been other injuries, but mine... Well, Spinner lost his pants when we rode up to Douglas. Why am I not surprised?
• 4:06
[laughs] How he, how he doesn't have frostbite is beyond me, but- [laughs]... um, yeah, that was another mess. It was, uh, yeah, I'm not doing well. Well, that should be a good time.
• 4:15
So, we just need to find a bunch more riders, is what you're saying. It'll be... And I, I'll get, I'll get stuff set. Um, I'll, I'm assuming we'll start at Brother's like we always do.
• 4:22
Um, Schmoot's really good about getting us a table and places to sit, and then we'll, you know, and LTS opens early for us, so we can, we can kinda keep on the regular schedule.
• 4:32
I haven't looked at the weather that far out. It's, you know, it's a month away, so. Mm-hmm. Um, we always adjust according to the weather. I'd like to do a little bit more riding through neighborhoods.
• 4:40
And I think people are ready for us to be in the public. God, during pandemic it was ridiculous. Yeah, I bet. We just did three of us. It was me and Jake.
• 4:47
I don't know that anybody should be ready for you people to be in public. There is a problem with that. [laughs] But the reason we're not going to Milwaukee, Milwaukee is 2,000 people at least. Wow.
• 4:59
And it's gonna be just a giant loop, and there's no stops. How long has that one been going? Oh, gosh, I don't know. A long time. The Bike Federation runs... I think they actually run both of them.
• 5:07
They run the one in Milwaukee and the one in Madison. Okay. Um, Wisconsin's like, when it comes to that kinda stuff, Wisconsin's way more organized than Minnesota is. Hmm.
• 5:15
As far as, like, their bike federation does a ton of shit. How come our bike community doesn't come out as big? I don't know. Well- Because it's not advertised as much? I, well, I don't know.
• 5:26
We advertise it pretty well, as far as I'm concerned. We know we're on... Toys for Tots puts it out there. We tell people. We post it, all the, all the bars. It's on Facebook. But I, I, I just, it's...
• 5:36
Here's the thing, Ro- it's Rochester, and there's a s- well, I shouldn't say there's a small group of us that drink and ride bicycles, but there is. Mm-hmm. Uh, as a social aspect, there is.
• 5:48
There's another group that, um, that says they do the We Bike Rochester people, who have a group that goes out and they ride the paved trails, and then they wind up at Th- Thistle or Thesis and they have a couple beers.
• 5:59
But it's not the stupid shit we do. Mm-hmm. You know, and then you've got t- g- then there's some road teams like Jackhammer and Rotor Group.
• 6:08
You know, those guys, um, they do some pretty hardcore rides and some pretty hardcore drinking, but they don't usually participate in this kind of stuff. This is, uh- That's weird. Yeah, I don't know.
• 6:18
I- 'Cause a lot of those guys ride year-round. Well- Most all of them do, don't they? Yeah, but I, I, I think it's more, um, those two groups, their group goes out and rides.
• 6:26
The Jackhammer guys, that group goes and does a ride together. Oh, okay. You know, and it's just, it's just them. So they're basically doing the same thing we're doing, but it's them, you know? Sure.
• 6:36
And, and that's cool. I mean, they [laughs] they do... I've seen, uh, Kayla send me a bunch of snaps from those guys, [laughs] and they do a lot of really cool shit. There's no getting around it.
• 6:44
But, uh, yeah, I mean, so we're gonna do it again. I'm, I'm excited to do it. I really, I really wasn't, and I don't know why. It wasn't because of my accident last year. There was just like, I was like, "Eh."
• 6:55
But now, I don't know. Uh, Greg kind of, I don't want to say Greg pushed me into it, but, or, uh, um, Sven pushed me into it a bit. But I'm like, "Yeah, I'll do it again. I'll do it."
• 7:04
Well, you guys were top story on evening news last year. [laughs] That's right. It was like the first story. That's why he pushed it, because he wants to be- Yeah... on TV again.
• 7:13
I don't have to go find somebody to put that sucker on TV again. [laughs] So and then we're all gonna stay, what's the hotel down below? Might as well get that out right now. We're all gonna stay in the same hotel.
• 7:23
The hotel down below. The behind wh- um, it's, uh, the suites below the 63 Club to the, toward the rinks. Oh, yeah, that's that new one. No, no, no, no, no. The old one that was behind the Holiday Inn South.
• 7:39
I'll put it out there. Yeah. Don't worry about it. We'll get it out there. Because if anybody else, if anybody else, the other three people that listen to this want to come and stay- [laughs]...
• 7:46
we get, we'll get everybody [laughs] in the same room and, or the same, the same hotel whether they like it or not. Yeah. The three people that listen- And I'm staying-... so it's me, you- And, uh... and who else?
• 7:53
And I'm walking to the hotel from the 63 Club this year. [laughs] There's no riding bike there, I'm pretty sure of that. Maybe just not down the hill while putting beer in your backpack or trying to open one or whatever.
• 8:02
How about if we have beer in the room so we don't have [laughs] to mess with that later? [laughs] God, that's ridiculous. Um, let's see what else is going on. Uh, oh, by the way, uh, you can join in this.
• 8:14
Today is, uh, even though who knows when this is gonna be posted, but this is Thursday the, uh... The 5th? The 5th? No. What is today? 3rd? I'm surprised you know it's Thursday. I'll give you [laughs] that much.
• 8:29
It's the 3rd today. Okay. It's Thursday the 3rd, and it's, it's s- it's, uh, Happy Singlespeed Day. Oh, cute.
• 8:36
[laughs] There's, there's actually some really, there's actually some really nice bikes posted on, on Facebook of guys that, you know, some of the singlespeed guys, like Dave Butler has this really super pretty titanium bike out there.
• 8:49
And yeah, there's a lot of- So do the gear changers get a day too? No, fuck those guys. [laughs] They don't get anything. How about the carbon bikers? Oh, yeah, they have a day. It's- E-bikers?
• 8:58
It's called, it's called Burn in Hell Day for the carbon fiber guys. [laughs] Um, and then, and then, and then, and then the other thing that's going on, by the way, December 3rd is Global Fat Bike Day.
• 9:10
Oh, that's pretty cool. No, it's not. It's stupid. [laughs] But, [laughs] but so, so you're gonna have to... Well, I suppose you can ride your clunker and consider it a fat bike. It's got kind of wide tires on it.
• 9:21
I do need a fat bike. I thought we figured something out for you. Um, well, when we did, nothing was available. Oh. Because it was- There's, there's one-... last order... there's a lot of stuff out there now.
• 9:34
I haven't checked, like, Surly or any of those places in a while. Oh, there w- at one time, there was onesies out there, but you might like a, you might like a, uh, ice cream truck better.
• 9:42
I think I like the ice cream truck. Yeah. I'm, I need to build a n- Didn't I borrow your ice cream truck? The pink one? No. Before it was stolen? What did I, which one did I borrow?
• 9:50
No, you'd borrowed my, you borrowed my Pugsley. Pugsley. Pugsley. Yeah. That's what it was. Yeah. So. But I think that was when you told me that, uh, the ice cream truck is should be what I'm riding on. Mm-hmm.
• 10:00
I still haven't built mine. I have the original frame up here. I still haven't built it yet. An ice cream truck? Yeah. Uh, uh, right there. That blue frame is- Oh, yeah... the ice cream truck.
• 10:07
I think I asked you that last time. Yeah. I get the wheels are out in the shop made. That's actually a sweet color too. Yeah.
• 10:12
Uh, I think they're, I think they're, uh, a purple or a merple, whatever the hell they're calling it now. I know Surly's not as cool as it used to be. Somehow all some names now, they're kind of funky. [laughs] But, um-
• 10:24
Yeah... so yeah. So we'll get you a fat bike. Um, you can, you can take your turn pull- I could, I could give up the trailer this year.
• 10:32
No, I'm gonna keep pulling the trailer, 'cause if I don't pull the trailer, I'm gonna get too fucked up. [laughs] So if I pull the trailer, I, I realize I have to behave myself a bit. And I, and I found a new mask.
• 10:41
I thought you were going prosthetic this year. Oh, I was thinking about it, but I don't- They're expensive. Well, no, they're not bad price, but you have to paint them, and I, I don't paint.
• 10:49
How hard are they to get on and off? You, no, there's no on and off. It's on, and then once off, it's done. It's done, right? Yeah. Right. Yeah. So yeah.
• 10:57
So that's why I found one that I think the jaw moves, so I can, I can talk. I'm gonna try to modify it a bit so you can at least talk a little bit out of it, 'cause that's, it's, it's a bitch otherwise. Yeah.
• 11:08
You know, and this is, like, a just a face one with a hood. Mm-hmm. So I can't just, like, pop the mask off like, like I was doing before. Uh, that's, this is gonna be on, and it's gonna be on for the, the duration.
• 11:18
That might be a pain in the ass. It might be. I guess as long as you can drink beer and talk shit. Well, the talking shit- I mean-... is what I'm more worried about than anything else.
• 11:25
[laughs] That's, that's, that's, that's my biggest problem. [laughs] Heaven forbid you can't shit talk. [laughs] I haven't done it for a couple days anyway. Bullshit. [laughs] I'm just checking.
• 11:37
So what do you, so what do you, uh, what do you get for Singlespeed Day? Is it like a- I don't know. I guess I didn't know it was Singlespeed Day until I saw [laughs] Dave Butler's post.
• 11:46
I don't, I just, I just threw it on the show notes 'cause it's like, "Oh, it's Singlespeed Day. Better put that in there," 'cause I don't have anything but singlespeeds.
• 11:54
So while, while you're doing your three hours of prep for today's show, you mean? I spent 15 minutes prepping today. [laughs] So bite me, would you? [laughs] Oh, yeah. I'm just curious.
• 12:03
I mean, is it like a, "Hey, Singlespeed Day"? It's kind of like- Yeah... your birthday?... kind of Let's raise a glass Yeah, I don't think... Yeah, I think so.
• 12:08
A toast to the single speed people Is there a big, like, single speed race or ride or something somewhere? I didn't- no. No, I think it's- I- Maybe we should change that... No. Next year.
• 12:17
I got [laughs] enough other shit to do. I don't need another fucking... Espe- well, you couldn't help because you have hockey practice- Yeah... 'cause you guys are already in season. Tough time of year.
• 12:25
And I'm dealing with it. I'm dealing with my head coach and his... He's got his, coaching his kid's team, so he, he, it's double duty with him now. Mm-hmm. Which is all right. I don't mind, it's kind of fun.
• 12:34
I mean, yeah, I, I don't wanna do it, but if it gives me something to listen to you bitch about- [laughs] Well, I, I-... it becomes more enjoyable... I was, um, so okay, so we'll just jump to that then.
• 12:45
So the reason we're just starting this now, and this is rather late tonight, but we got a late start because a buddy of ours who, um,
• 12:53
James has been on a podcast, but I don't think Gomez posted it because he didn't like the content. It was, [laughs] it was all GL stories. It was fricking hilarious. What? Stop it.
• 13:03
And, but, um- Should we put a mic on him? Yeah. Yeah, I think he... Oh, no. What do you want? Yeah, he can, he wants to talk. Clarky. Do you need to talk? [laughs] The show dog is here. Yeah. Yep.
• 13:15
Um, so James is a good buddy of ours. He's a really good writer, doesn't write as much as he does because he has five fucking kids. He just had another one today, yesterday. I'm sorry, yesterday.
• 13:26
Yeah, so you had to go- So we had-... drink away his sorrows? Well, he was at the...
• 13:29
Him and, he took the kids up to the hospital to see mom and the baby, and then dropped them off and came down and had a beer with us, [laughs] then he had to go back. [laughs] So, so he was behaving himself.
• 13:39
Had a little bite to eat. We went to, uh, Brick House. That place is pretty cool. That is a cool place. Yeah, that was awesome. Yeah. They have a, they make a really good house old fashion.
• 13:48
I recommend it if you're- Oh, well, I-... old fashion guy... no, I just did the shot of Jameson 'cause I had to get, come, come back here. I'm not surprised. They do...
• 13:55
Well, I'm not a Jameson guy, but they have it chilled. Yeah. It comes out of the tap chilled and that, it was actually tolerable I guess. You know, I wasn't really ever a big whiskey guy until actually I went there
• 14:08
and I had ordered, I ordered a beer and I, I think I ordered, like, a Busch Light, so it was, you know, my typical, right? Do they have it? They have it on tap. [laughs] They have Busch Light on tap?
• 14:19
So and they- [laughs]... and, like, their tap beers are, like, super cold, so it's like- Oh...
• 14:23
I mean, for certain beers it's not good, I guess, but if you're drinking, like, a shitty light beer, you want it really cold, so- Yes... I had a, I, I had [laughs] ordered a Busch Light.
• 14:34
He doesn't like Busch Light either it sounds like. Yeah. See. You bring up bad stuff like that.
• 14:38
So I ordered a Busch Light, and I'm sitting there and I'm, like, fucking around on my phone and, like, five minutes go by and I'm like, "Sh-," I was like, "What'd they have to change the keg here? What's going on?"
• 14:48
So next thing I know, there's a, an old fashion that the bartender slides in front of me, and I'm like, "What the hell is this?" She's like, "Well, it's an old fashion. Didn't you order one?"
• 14:58
I'm like, "No, I ordered a Busch Light." She's like, "Oh, I'm sorry." So she goes and gets me a Busch Light. Well, you know, kind of like the bartender restaurant thing, like, they're not gonna take it from you.
• 15:11
So she gave it to me, and I drank it, you know? But I, I had never had one prior to that. It was really good, and now I'm kind of a- That was your first old fashion? I w- I shouldn't say my first one.
• 15:22
I'd never had one that I enjoyed, you know, 'cause, uh, it was usually always, like, shitty whiskey or, like, it wasn't the proper ingredients. That's- But they make a good mix there. It's a house mix. Oh, really?
• 15:34
And I forget what whiskey she poured, but I don't think it was a cheap one either. They have quite a selection of whiskey there. Like, quite a bit of- Yeah, yeah... whiskeys and scotches there.
• 15:42
So I drank it, and she's like, "How was it?" And I'm like, "That was actually really good," 'cause she's like, "Good, 'cause that was an expensive ass whiskey, so you're welcome."
• 15:49
[laughs] But ever since then I've kind of been like- Oh, so let's brag about-... dabbling... let's brag about this place and put our podcast over there so they, like, give us free drinks. Actually, it wasn't bad.
• 15:57
That, that- Have you eaten there? No. No. The food looked fantastic. Food is really good. But, but my shot of Jameson was only four bucks. Like, I was getting, I was, I was ready to drop down eight, nine bucks.
• 16:06
Yeah, that ain't bad. No, not at all. I think that was- I mean, normally you can't even get, like, a shot of, like, Dr. McGillicuddy's for- Right... less than five bucks. Es- especially in downtown Rochester. Yep.
• 16:15
It's ridiculous. Yeah, at a place like that. And, and I'll tell you this, that's probably the first time I've actually been downtown since the pandemic. I fucking- It is a cool bar though.
• 16:21
It is, and I don't like downtown. I don't either. But I could see going back there again. Yeah. I think- The c- the, the clientele was cool. Yep. The bartenders are cool. It's a cool little location there- Yeah...
• 16:30
like under that skyway thingy and... Yeah. That ar- that little area's kind of like ipsey pipsey downtown-y. Yeah... but it was- Parking kind of sucks, but you rode your bike, so that's fine Yep.
• 16:38
And well, did you see the bike racks they have across the way? Yeah. They're really nice now. There's a bunch of them there. Yeah. Yeah. So it's, like, decent to lock up to. And you can see them from the bar. Yes. Yep.
• 16:46
Yeah, which is huge. Yep. Especially because, well, this is perfect segue, so we might just go... Well, let's just go to that first. Look at us go. Well, yeah, I know. This is, like, we're professionals.
• 16:57
[laughs] Um- Let's not get carried away... let's, uh, talk about bike stealing- Yeah... in the city of Rochester. So you've been victim. Uh, so I had a bike stolen. Um, my bike was stolen right after the pandemic.
• 17:09
It was sitting outside of a bar, locked to itself. There was nothing to lock it to. That was your ice cream truck. Yes. Yep. And w- yeah. No, no, that was my Moonlander. The, the- Oh, okay... pro tape Moonlander. Yes.
• 17:18
The pink one. Yep. So that was that. That was back then. So lately, and we play hockey on Sunday nights and, and, um, we'll throw some pictures up there, but honest to God, we played hockey on Sunday night.
• 17:29
We come walking out, um, three of my buddies, I hate to say this, they ride electric bikes. Yep.
• 17:36
But they, but they haul their hockey stuff in a trailer behind their bikes, and they park them inside, and they lock them up to a pole inside the building. Can we address that first? What's that?
• 17:44
That now, like, they park in the rink where we can see them, and it looks like the fucking daycare is there- [laughs]... 'cause everybody's got their child trailer behind their bike.
• 17:54
[laughs] Well, and I had my big fat dummy there last week, so it looked really bad. We had Roller Dogs. Well, yeah, we had to do Roller Dogs. Yep. Um- So anyway, this guy comes in- So, so
• 18:05
th- the, how the story went, I mean, then w- bringing it all, um, I come walking out 'cause I'm always the last one being a goalie, the last one to change, the last one to shower. Come walking out and, and-
• 18:14
Our buddy Mike Alcott's going, "Ha ha, joke's funny. Where's my bike?" Yeah. I'm going, "What are you talking about?" He goes, "My bike's gone." I goes, "I, I didn't take it."
• 18:22
He goes, "Well, somebody must've come in and grabbed my keys, took the lock, and then took and hid my bike." So we're kinda looking around, and then pretty quickly it dawns on us that nobody took his bike.
• 18:31
Nobody took his key. Yeah, this guy was ballsy. Yeah, so [laughs] true to form, we all go up to the 63 Club and call the cops. [laughs] Let's go to the bar.
• 18:43
Well, Mike ac- Mike actually went home, but the rest of us went to the bar. Yeah. And then I called the rink manager and said, "Hey, there's cameras." I said, "Can you go look at the cameras?"
• 18:52
I didn't hear back from him right away. He was on the road. He says, "But as soon as I get home I'll, I'll do this." So you know, this is crap. This is 10:00, 11:00 at night- Yeah... at least.
• 19:02
Um- Well, 'cause I got the text like around midnight. No, it was that night. Yeah. Yeah. It was early... Yeah, so we, so we- Maybe it was early in the morning... So Mike filed a report.
• 19:11
The cops talked to him, and he goes, "As soon as you get the video can you send it to us?" Or the, the- Yeah... the film from the camera.
• 19:16
Sure as shit, Bob had him, our other rink manager, had video of him riding up to the building, and he eventually put it in sequence for the cops. He had him riding up to the building, kinda like checking the place out.
• 19:28
There's a five-minute gap where he rides away and then walks back in. And then it goes to the cameras inside, which are literally pointing at that spot. You see him. You can...
• 19:38
And I'll put the, I'll put that video out there. You can actually watch him, uh- Cut the lock... pull all those cables out of his backpack, cut the lock, throw it in the bike, in the bike thing, and then ride off.
• 19:46
And then, then we've got him riding away on the bike. Mm-hmm. So, and, uh, this is kinda secondhand so the sequence mightn't be exact, but
• 19:55
Mike immediately s- I send it to Mike, and Mike immediately sends it to the cop 'cause he's working the night shift, right? And I think they kinda knew who the guy was.
• 20:02
Yeah, it sounded like they'd, they'd been dealing with this guy. Well, it's not surprising. Or he had- Yeah. So-... previous cases... so he, um... The cop says yes. So the next day,
• 20:18
I think it was the next day, or next day or the next day after that, whichever it was, it was Sunday, Monday or Tuesday anyway, that was Sunday was hap- it was stolen.
• 20:24
Monday or Tuesday they arrest the guy stealing a bike from fucking Walmart. Yeah. So it was- Not inside the store, but outside, like an employee's bike... so it was, that was Tuesday. Like, 'cause Monday- Yeah...
• 20:32
is when the, all the videos and pictures came out. Right. And oh yeah, maybe- Or maybe it was Monday night. No, it, well- It all happened pretty quick...
• 20:39
no, no, no, it was Monday because, because I, I, I, I text Mike and I said, "You know, when can I put this on Facebook?" We're, we wouldn't...
• 20:48
We, there's, there's a couple different sites on Facebook we post stuff for about stolen bikes. Minneapolis has a really good one. Yep. You know, and that kinda stuff. And there's, the one in Rochester's okay.
• 20:55
We put it in a couple different spots in Rochester. And I put it out there, and I'm not kidding you, 20 minutes after I posted it a kid called me and says, "I know who it was. I know that guy." Yeah.
• 21:05
Well, it was a pretty good shot of his face. Yes. And he goes, "I know that guy," and he goes, "And this is his name." So we, so Mike called the cops, but again told them who it was.
• 21:12
They go, "We know who it is," and they'd arrested him later that afternoon. Yeah, he was already in jail, wasn't he? No, no, no, no, no. I thought that- He had, he was, he got caught stealing another bike- Gotcha...
• 21:20
so on that pre- he went to jail. And the cop interviewed him that night, that next night, and he's like, "No, I already sold the bike." So Mike doesn't get his bike back.
• 21:27
And I guess this is the whole point of bringing this up. Everybody has done everything they can. Yep. Like, the cops did everything they could. Um, our friends, people, just people in Rochester- Yep...
• 21:37
like going, "Hey, we know who this guy is," blah, blah, blah. In the meantime, let me just bring up one other thing first. Um, so that was that bike. Um, that one was stolen. He tried stealing from Walmart.
• 21:48
That Wednesday night I'm playing hockey with Keegan. Yep. And Keegan shows me video. It's the same fricking guy stealing a bike from Northwest. Now, when that one happened- Yeah... I don't know. Yeah.
• 21:58
But there, so there's three for sure. And sure as shit, two weeks ago somebody posts on Facebook and spotted in Rochester, "Hey, my friend lost her bike and here's a picture of it." Same fricking guy. Jesus.
• 22:09
So in this last month, I know of four bicycles that he's stolen. Yeah. And, and, and, and no offense against the place. The guy is a drug addict. He's not- He's a career criminal.
• 22:18
Yeah, and he's stealing bikes, and he's making quick profit off of them. And, and you know they're not, they're not selling them in, in Rochester. Yeah. They're, they're going to the cities or wherever, you know?
• 22:26
But it's just like this is bullshit. I mean, and, and again, not faulting anybody. I don't know what we do about this. I'm, this is like the most... My hands are tied the most that they've ever been. Mm-hmm.
• 22:35
Because here's a guy, we have clear video of him stealing three or four bicycles, and they've caught him ki- stealing the fourth one. And then, and then, and, and we still can't do anything about it.
• 22:46
And that's the problem, is they're probably only able to charge him with the one they caught him with.
• 22:51
They, they charged him with stealing Mike's and the, and the bike at Walmart, so there was a f- there was a- What'd they charge him with, just like a petty theft?
• 22:58
No, the first one was because it was under, and the other one was, was a federal one because it was over $1,500. Yeah. So he got two charges against him. He pleaded- So how is the guy not in jail?
• 23:07
I suppose he paid his bail or whatever. I don't know why- Pays his bail with all that bike money. Yeah, well, yeah. Or yeah, whatever. I mean, but if- "If you let me out I'll sell- But it-...
• 23:15
this stolen bike and pay you my bail." But it's- [laughs]... but it's, it's like the cops did what they were supposed to do. So I'm not, like I said, I'm not blaming anybody. No, it's just- I don't know what you do...
• 23:22
the system's failing. Yeah. It, it's, uh- It's tough... and I'll guarantee you... And there was talk about that. I mean, you know the hockey guys. Oh, yeah.
• 23:29
They're like, "Let's go find this fucking guy and beat the shit out of him." And then- That's what he needs... and then, well, yeah, but at the same time we'll all be in jail if we did that. Yeah, exactly.
• 23:36
Then you're in jail. So that doesn't work either. So it's, I don't know. But it's, uh, so we, we go back to talking about locks.
• 23:43
You know, um, we've talked to a couple friends about locks and, and seriously the only thing that's gonna save you right now is those god dang giant chains. Mm-hmm. You know, it's easy to break a U-lock.
• 23:53
There's several ways you can break into a U-lock, so they're- Well, I've seen people using like the, like the wart freeze spray. Yep. Yep. And then you can break them that way. Yep.
• 24:02
And, and, and, and I, I'm, I'll, I'll bet money that that guy would, that would've been his next move on, on- Right... because even in the thicker cables you, you freeze them and then you can snap them- Yeah...
• 24:11
with a, with a, with a bolt cutter. Right. And you can get all that shit anywhere. You can buy the
• 24:17
You know, you can go buy all that shit, freeze spray shit anywhere Right, and then bolt cutters are just, you know Yeah, they're bolt cutters Yeah. They're just at, they're, they're at any, any- Hardware store...
• 24:28
any, yeah, you know, Northern Tool- Buy-... they all carry them I can go to Walmart and buy them Probably, but all the, all the places carry good ones. It just- Yeah...
• 24:33
it just bugs the shit out of me that there's, in my entire lifetime, so I've been riding a bicycle since I was a kid, without, with hardly a gap, right? And I've had, I've had three bicycles stolen. That's crazy.
• 24:49
Yeah, and, and, you know, and the three, and, and, and I never had any stolen when I was a kid. Right. They're all when I was an adult.
• 24:55
I had one stolen in RAGBRAI, and that was, and that was a ring that was stealing bikes up there. Mm-hmm. They didn't catch anybody, but it was- They knew who was doing it, or knew who was behind it... Oh, yeah.
• 25:03
It was, it wa- it, it made total sense to me. So if you go to RAGBRAI, um, there's 100 Ryder Vans or, you know, whatever- Yeah... are on the ride. So these guys come in with a Ryder Van, and then you wear
• 25:16
SPDs and I'll wear Times, and somebody else wears Looks, and you just, everybody leaves their bike sitting around. Like, we would, I went to the C-Store to buy a couple cases of beer, and I walk out and my bike is gone.
• 25:28
And I had SPD pedals on it, so they just jump on it and take away and ride it. Nobody's gonna say anything. They just see you just walk up to a bike and jump on it and ride it. Right.
• 25:37
You got the right shoes, nobody's gonna say anything. It looks pretty normal. Yeah, right. So, you know, and then they just throw them in the back of a, of a Ryder truck. Why? Every- So everybody's bike- Yeah...
• 25:45
is in the back of them. So I, it's- That's the, and that's the problem with those settings, and I've even seen them where people steal them, like, in front of h- like, several people in broad daylight. Oh, yeah.
• 25:59
I guarantee you, like, that lobby could've been full, and unless somebody knew that that was Mike's bike, if the guy walks up there and just, like, acts like nothing happened...
• 26:10
Like, I've seen it where, like, on videos where people will walk up and cut a lock in front of people, and then just jump on the bike and take aw- take off. And it's like, to non-bike people,
• 26:23
it's m- it's just another person riding a bike. Right. Right. You know? But to a bike guy, you're like, "That guy's eyeing that bike up pretty good. Oh, now he's, now he's cutting that lock. Okay, this is a problem."
• 26:34
But it, it's crazy. Yeah. And, and like I said, you feel so helpless because there's, everybody's doing as much as they can- Yeah... which, which isn't getting your bike back. No.
• 26:45
You know, and, and for those of us that, I mean, I've got lots of bikes. Right. But even so, I lose a bike, I've lost a part of me. And it, it's, it, it bugs the shit- Well, it's-... out of me, you know?
• 26:56
And that's, you know, and like anybody that's ever had anything stolen, especially something that means something to them, it's like, you see those posts all the time where people are like, "I don't care.
• 27:06
No questions asked, just bring me my shit back." Well, it's- You know what I mean? It's like- Especially, like, the one that bugged me the most was the last one. They stole an old Murray, which is a nothing bike, right?
• 27:16
Right. But it was that person's transportation. Exactly. And, and that's, you know, I, fu- uh, if, if a guy stole it because he needs to ride a bike, I will find... I, I get bikes from Junk Be Gone. Exactly.
• 27:29
I will donate a bike to you. I'll, I'll fix it up and give it to you. But you know that guy's targeting certain bikes. Yeah. Maybe. I don't know. I mean, there's no way, like...
• 27:40
First of all, they're inside the building, so when he stole Mike's bike- Right... and it's an e-bike, so it's almost like he knew that bike- Oh, stop it... was there. He knew that bike was there, right?
• 27:53
Well, I don't think so. I think he just came in looking to... Which makes me wonder, you know, they've, at the ring- And it kind of falls in the same line, you know?
• 28:00
They've got the, they've got the, uh, the um, uh, what do you call it? The, uh, change box, right?
• 28:07
Well, they're, they, they're, they have video of a guy breaking in, stealing it, sitting out on the street, going, breaking it open and stealing the money out of it, and they couldn't do anything to him.
• 28:15
They knew who it was. The cops knew- Crazy... who the guy was. They're like, "Eh, nothing we can do with him, sorry." Yeah. It's, uh, yeah, it's, it's frustrating.
• 28:24
And, and, and I think it- I feel for them, it's not worth the resources to go find somebody's- Oh, no, they found the guy Yeah, I know, but it, in, in the event that they didn't find him, and the only reason they did find him is because he got caught stealing another bike.
• 28:38
Well, that guy, but the guy with the change machine, they didn't even steal who he was. They're just like, "Eh, he's-" Well, right. You know? But you see it a lot. Like, I guarantee you if
• 28:47
that same situation with Mike's e-bike happened and that guy hadn't been arrested for stealing another bike, like, they'd be like, "Yeah, we know who he is." And it's like, okay, you can't do anything about it.
• 28:59
You have all the video proof, but the only proof you don't have is that he physically has the bike. Well, he admitted that he stole it. Right. And then, and then, and then he didn't have it, he sold it. But then what?
• 29:11
Well, then that's just it. Then, then- Exactly. He gets- Dude, they're, yeah... he gets a ticket. Yeah, he got a ticket, and now Mike would have to take him to small claims court- Right...
• 29:17
to get the, get the money out of him. And- There's nothing that says, like- There's-... "Hey, you owe this guy- Yeah, he's got n-... $1,300, $1,500."
• 29:22
Well, they can say that, but he's, uh, there's nothing, he's never gonna get the money back out of it. Right. You know? So insurance winds up paying for it.
• 29:28
And you know that guy is not gonna show up to small claims court. Oh, fuck no. No. No, no. And then, but like I said, that's, that's the- It's a shitty situation...
• 29:37
the kicker being, yeah, I mean, it's, and it's, and you know, so I lost my bike. I never found that one. I'll, I'll guarantee you is they, they cut that thing up into parts 'cause we never...
• 29:45
Well, you thought you might've saw it riding around, but I, we, we scoured that p- trailer park and we didn't ever see a thing. Yeah.
• 29:51
It's- I mean, it's just kinda weird that you see somebody riding a pink- Yeah, there's not a lot [laughs]. Well, there is a few others.
• 29:58
That's the worst part is now there's- Well, now that I start poking around, I start seeing a, well, now there are a, like a ton... Well, there's more companies now that make those type of bikes. Right.
• 30:07
And there are all sorts of different colors. Well, and, and then the worst part is, for me, is now, like, that, the day after that, his bike was stolen, um, I
• 30:17
When I posted it on Facebook, uh, I was getting emails, I was getting Facebook messages from people going, "I might've saw it here. I might've saw..." Yep. I, I drove and rode around this town like you can't believe.
• 30:30
And, and, and, and don't forget, I know the name of this guy. Alls I wanna do... Alls...
• 30:35
To this day, alls I wanna do is just see him someplace, yell out his name, and then just watch him freak out and chase him down the street. [laughs] I just... I, uh, I don't even wanna touch the guy when I catch him.
• 30:47
I just, I just want to make his life so miserable. I would, I would love to just follow him around for, like, a week. [laughs] We can still now. We can still now. It just sucks that they're...
• 30:58
And it- they're everywhere, but there just sucks that there are people out there that just- Yeah. I, I, I, uh, yeah, I, uh, I don't know. I, it...
• 31:06
It's something I've been waiting to talk about it 'cause this, but this was a month ago. Yeah. And I've been wanting to talk about it because I just, I feel absolutely helpless on what to do.
• 31:13
Well, there's just nothing you can do. No, there's gotta be something. I mean, the only thing you can do, like you said, is invest in,
• 31:18
you know, some sort of really nice chain lock that, you know- Yeah, well- And now, all of a sudden, you're carrying a 50-pound chain around while you're riding, you know? Well, that's why, that's why you see those locks.
• 31:31
Like, it's... If you go to, go to, like, downtown, you'll see those locks on, um, on bike posts and, and, and, and, and, and- Yeah... and, like, so at St.
• 31:41
Mary's where they've got the railing around the bike, bike lot, you'll see them hanging there. Oh, okay. That way they don't have to carry them.
• 31:46
They just leave them there all the time, then they just unlock them- Just lock their bike up... come get on their bike, yeah. Then their bike is safe. Which makes sense because we've had bikes stolen from there.
• 31:53
Oh, I bet. Some... Well, not a lot. I mean, a couple of them are guys didn't lock them up. Yeah, that's weird. And like you're, you're on 2nd Street. Mm-hmm. You know, it's not, it's not, it's not a horrible place.
• 32:04
It's, it's a good part of town, but it's not, it's not secure in any way. Right. You know, there's, there's 50 bikes in that spot, you know? Yep. Somebody walking up and taking a bike is no big deal.
• 32:14
But- Well, and I, I remember when my mom used to ride her bike to Methodist, there's that area out back where everybody parks them. Yep. And she said, actually, one day she didn't ride her bike.
• 32:27
Um, but you know, she knew, she knew all the people that were hanging their bikes on the rack there,
• 32:32
and they came out after their shift and, or came out for lunch or something like that, and, uh, like five out of the seven bikes were vandalized. Really? And, and one of them stolen.
• 32:46
So it was like, it looked like they tried to cut locks.
• 32:50
And when they couldn't get the lock free or cut the lock, they, you know, and they vandalized them, like kicked in the spokes on one, you know, like took the other one and, like spun it around and jammed it into the, the rack and...
• 33:05
You know, it's like they're just angry people that were trying to steal the bike, but couldn't and then got mad and they're like, "Well, I'm gonna kick your rim in.
• 33:13
You're gonna, you know, taco your front wheel and then you're not gonna be able to ride it." Yeah, "If I can't steal your bike, you can't ride it." Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And see- And so she started bringing in- It's-...
• 33:22
her bike into her office. Well, and- And that was, like, a no-no. Oh, no- Yeah... because you don't... I did that at St. Mary's for, oh, God. Yeah, she did it for a long time for- Oh, I did, too. I, I'll bet...
• 33:33
Well, Sue did, too. Sue worked in the Bass Building. Yeah. We carried our bikes inside for, oh, 20 years at least. Yeah. And all of a sudden, one day I get a cop that goes, "Where you going?" "To my shop."
• 33:43
And he's like, "You can't bring that bike in here." I go, "Why not? I've been doing it [laughs] I've been doing it- Yeah... longer than you've been alive probably."
• 33:50
[laughs] And he's like, "Well, you can't do that anymore." So I'm like, "Okay." And, uh, he, he's like, "Yeah, because if I let you do it, then everybody has to do it." And, and, like, I can kinda see their point. Right.
• 33:59
But at the same time, it's like, well then, do what we asked you to do in the first place. Yeah. Instead of just putting down a slab of cement and putting the bike racks in fucking backwards- Mm-hmm...
• 34:09
put it, build a little building or just take a part of the parking ramp- Yeah... and make it lock and key. Do it for every other thing around here. It's not gonna- Yeah, a nice little bike shed. Yes. Yeah. Yes.
• 34:18
I mean, and, you know, uh, you could do the, you could do the, you could, like they do over in Europe, do the two-story thing. Yep.
• 34:24
You put your bike in, you put a button, and it goes to the top, and it's locked, and it's in place, and nobody's gonna touch your bike. Right. I mean, it's... I,
• 34:32
I suppose if you look at it, if you look at- Maybe that's your retirement gig. You can sell those. Millionaire.
• 34:36
No, I was just gonna say the other way, it's like I could be a real dick and just, uh, encourage those guys to steal bikes so I can sell more commuter bikes, right? [laughs] Um, but I don't wanna... I, I just, I just,
• 34:48
I... It's just- I've never, I've never been... Always pissed me off about stealing, and just maybe because we're in the bike industry or, or I'm, because I'm a cyclist, the stealing of bicycles pisses me off to no end.
• 35:01
I guess because I think bicycles to most people that, that are big into bicycling are, it's a piece of them. Yeah. It's not just their, it's just not their mode of transportation. It's, it's- It's not their hobby.
• 35:11
It's not their mode of transportation. No, it's- It's a part of their life... it's them. It, it's involved in every as- Right... aspect of their life. And so, uh, yeah, so it, it just bugs...
• 35:20
Maybe that's why it bugs me more than anything else. It's, you know- Mm. You know, you've got, you've got, um, Edith and McGowan, there's a bunch of guys in town here that fix bikes up and give them to kids.
• 35:31
And then somebody- Right... goes and steals them. And then those are the ones that you see laying alongside the bike trails.
• 35:35
They ride them as far as they wanna go, and then they- Yeah, where they just, you know, need a ride home and- Yeah, yeah... steal some, steal some poor guy or poor kid's bike and- Right.
• 35:43
Well, and you look at that, I mean, there are [laughs] people are always calling me, "Hey, there's a bike sitting on so-and-so's street. You know, you should go get it." I'm like, "No, it's a piece of crap."
• 35:52
Like- Yeah... they usually break them- Yeah... before they, before they junk them or junk, you know, do something to them before they quit riding them. So they're just w- absolutely...
• 36:00
Even to the person who owned it, they're not worth anything- Right... too much to expect to fix, but that's horrible. Yeah, I think I had one bike stolen as a kid, and it was, it was a gear shifter. I had wanted this,
• 36:13
I was probably seven, eight. I had wanted this Gary Fisher, I remember seeing at the bike shop And then I finally got it one year for, like, Christmas or birthday, and I rode it over to my buddy's house and, you know.
• 36:26
That was, uh, you know, the old school social media. Like, you just drive the neighborhood and look for all the bikes in the yard, and that's where you knew where all your buddies were. Yeah.
• 36:36
And I'd, you know, dump my bike in the front yard and went inside or went out back or did whatever, and I came back out, and out of the six bikes that were there, mine was the only one that went missing.
• 36:47
Well, and I, and I still think there's, I still think there's pockets of that. Like, I, I, I mean, you can see where I live, but the kids across the street never... Their bikes are always sitting in the front yard.
• 36:56
Right. And they never, and they never, they never tie them, they never lock them a- away. Um, you know, they're... And, and it's, it's nice out here. You know, you just... We're- Yeah...
• 37:05
I mean, we're f- maybe we're far enough out of town that that's not gonna happen. I think so. There's not a lot of riffraff around in your neighborhood? [sighs] If you'd met many of your kids, they're horrible.
• 37:14
Yeah, but they're not bike stealing horrible. Baskets of- Well, no, because [laughs] if they stole them, they'd come over here to fix them, but that's not gonna work. [laughs] No. No, they're good. They're...
• 37:22
It's a really good bunch of kids out here, but maybe we're just far enough out of town, but that's just, you know, I- I mean, even in my neighborhood. I mean, you wouldn't leave your bikes outside here,
• 37:32
like out front of your house. Well, not out front, but out back I do [laughs] all the time. Yeah. Well- I, I just, I- You've got a couple of, uh- I-...
• 37:38
security systems that are four-legged, long-looking creatures that might not allow people to get close enough That, that bark a lot. [laughs] Yeah, that's true. [laughs] Clark is just, he's a killer dog, that's for sure.
• 37:49
Right. He's a, he's a, he's an animal. I don't know what he wants to get outside for. There's probably, uh... Oh, the deer are probably out back. He heard something. He's- The deer are back out back.
• 37:58
He- He saw a leaf move and he needed to bark at it. No, no, he likes the deer. Yeah. The deer don't play with him like they used to.
• 38:02
When they were younger, they used to go out there and just, like, play games with him outside the fence. On the other side of the fence? [laughs] Yeah, they'd just run back and forth like the dogs, [laughs] like dogs do.
• 38:10
He'd- Yeah... the deer was doing the same thing. It's like, this is dumb. [laughs] So anyway, uh, we killed the bikes, the bike theft thing. We fixed nothing. Talk about that for a long time and go nowhere.
• 38:22
That's the hard part. I know. That's just it. That's what bugs me about it. It's like, it's like we can talk about it till we're blue in the face, but I don't have even, even a dumb answer for how to take care of it.
• 38:31
Yeah. Well, and even the people that get punished, you know, like the guy that stole Mike's, it's just gonna- He's not doing it 'cause he likes bikes. He's doing it 'cause he needs money for drugs.
• 38:39
'Cause he's making money, right? No, he needs money for drugs. Well, he's making money to buy drugs. Yeah. Yeah, right. Yeah. And, and, and, and then you're supposed to feel bad for him? I can't. No.
• 38:47
I just fucking can't. No, I can't feel bad for that. No. It's ridiculous. Uh, uh, well, it's ridiculous that I feel that way, and it's ridiculous that we can't do anything about it. Yeah.
• 38:59
But all right, last thing is- [laughs] Fucking can't do it... fucking do it. [laughs] So, uh, episode, was it 13? Yeah. Yeah, 13. Episode 13, uh, with Chuck Sulceth, um, firefighter.
• 39:18
Um, really good friend of ours, amazing person, hockey guy. It was the greatest podcast we ever did. Yep. Um, if you haven't listened, you should. Amazing stories as a first responder firefighter, but, uh,
• 39:35
he lost his, lost his fight against, uh, esophageal cancer, um, so- On the 19th... on the 19th. So, um, obviously we felt hard-pressed to talk about him, 'cause that's, uh, as hard as it is, that's
• 39:52
how, how I feel better about it. Um, but, uh, definitely one of the... You know, when people pass away that there's always, "Oh, it was a, it was a great person, you know, a great man." And Chuck truly was.
• 40:09
When you call Chuck a great person, a great man, it's, it's not even scratching the surface. I mean, the guy was amazing. Yeah. Um- It, it, it's, it's, uh, um... You're right.
• 40:21
Everything, everything you'd say about that guy was him twice, and it was genuine. It wasn't like, "This is my job and this is how I have to act." This is just how he was. Yeah. It's like if you met Chuck,
• 40:33
you know, first of all, he wouldn't be the first guy to, to jump out and tell you that he's a firefighter,
• 40:39
um, and had been doing it for a long time, and not to mention teaching, I mean, hundreds, thousands of firefighters how to be a good firefighter. He would never tell you that.
• 40:50
But if you met him, you'd be like, "Wow, this is an amazing human being." And then you would find out later that he's a firefighter, and you'd be like, "I couldn't think of a better profession for such an amazing human."
• 41:05
Oh, right, exactly. I mean, saving lives- Yeah, yeah... all the time, and then training the next generation of people to, to train, to save lives and, and fight fire. I mean, it's just, uh- And-... amazing...
• 41:18
and, and the, uh, [laughs] not that you should ever go to one, but the, uh, fireman's funeral they had for him- Oh, it was unbelievable... it is. And, and, and he's deserving of every second of it. Absolutely.
• 41:28
Um, it was, it was pretty amazing. And, and it was, and it was... It helped a lot of people I think, but it- Yep... tore me apart. 100%. I mean, that was, uh, um, that was one of the hardest that I've ever- Yeah...
• 41:45
gone through. And I, I think of it as, you know, and it's just what we knew of Chuck is how everybody knew Chuck, you know? I mean, it was just- Right. Yeah. Yeah... he was... It didn't matter. He was the same
• 42:00
person to everyone. It didn't matter who you were. And, and we can tell stories about him doing his fireman... I don't know how you wanna put it. Um, at the club- Oh, yeah...
• 42:13
or, or just anywhere we were at on a bike ride, and somebody was maybe in need and doing something stupid, and he was on top of it. Like right now he was like right into
• 42:25
Firefighter mode, if that's what you wanna call it Right And he was so fantastic about it. And, a- a- and I think as hard as it's been, so it's been, you know, almost two weeks now, um, and as hard as it's been, I think
• 42:40
to lighten things up a little bit so it's more like our podcast, um, [laughs] Sunday night was the best we da- we could have done for him. Um, we got all the hockey guys up there to have a beer and toast him.
• 42:50
We toasted him quite a bit. Yep. And then we get Randy to tell jokes. Yes. And, and there's... We're not saying a single freaking joke here now because even though we can swear all we want in this- [laughs]...
• 43:00
we're still not telling those jokes. No, it's not going there. But Chuck would've been so proud of us- Yeah...
• 43:05
because we had the bartender, Kira, and uh, Ally, the girl that plays hockey with us, he basically said, "I'm gonna tell these jokes. You're gonna cry." [laughs] And he...
• 43:16
And, and I think they were thinking they're either gonna be mad and cry because of the jokes. No, because they were so obnoxious that they made you cringe and laugh your ass off. Yep. And it was right...
• 43:26
It was like, it was like Chuck was right there with us laughing. Uh, you can just see it now. Yep. And it was just a, you know, kinda just a normal night. You know? Like, since, since his passing, it just...
• 43:41
hockey didn't feel the same. And actually, since he had gotten really sick and when he couldn't skate with us anymore, it was just... It just wasn't the same. You know?
• 43:49
And that's a, a great group of people that I'm glad to, to skate with. I mean, you guys have been skating a lot longer than- Well-... I've been there.
• 43:57
But- And just take, and just to take that another step, so after the funeral,
• 44:02
um, and, and I'll tell you this, so we're talking about h- firefighters and, and, and right now, but I'll tell you th- because you don't know this is that when we're talking about this, we're also talking about the cycling community's exactly the same way.
• 44:16
So you know, fireman's funeral, all these guys come down. So there's also, in Minnesota, there's also a fireman's hockey tournament where all the firemen fr- from the state of Minnesota get together and play hockey.
• 44:26
And I'm a, I'm a volunteer fire department or fireman three days [laughs] a year because I play goalie for them. [laughs] And uh,
• 44:33
but those guys all came down, all the guys he played hockey with, and they wanted to know all the haunts that, that, that Chuck hung out at, so they were, they were at the Legion, they were at the, they were at the 63 Club.
• 44:44
Yeah. They went everywhere they needed to go to celebrate his life. Yeah.
• 44:50
Yeah, I think it was pretty cool, you know, and then the, you know, the hockey community is, is deep, and I, I thought it was really cool how they made mention about, uh, you know, obviously he, he's a firefighter, big firefighter funeral.
• 45:05
Um, you know, but hockey was a big, a big part of Chuck's life, too, and I think it, it speaks a lot to our group and, uh, you know, Chuck's a core member of that group. But um,
• 45:19
it speaks a lot to that group because, I mean, we're, we're not, we're not pros, but uh, there's a big chunk of our, our group missing now. Right. And that's the, that's the hardest part. Well, and, and I still laugh.
• 45:31
Kelly... Was it Kelly that said- Mm-hmm... we're sitting in, we're sitting in the... And she goes, "Thank God they're not asking the fire-," they're at, not asking... 'Cause they had firefighters get up and talk. Yep.
• 45:39
And they go, "Thank God they're not asking the hockey people to get up and talk." She goes, "That'd be too embarrassing." They... Nobody... She couldn't even handle that. Oh, man.
• 45:45
It would've been, it would've been- Yep... long and yeah. And it's like they all know the story. They kinda know the story of, uh, uh, how he was called Big Daddy. [laughs] So episode 13, Chewit's Lawn Chair- [laughs]...
• 45:58
uh, good piece on that, um, of how he, [laughs] how he became Big Daddy. But uh, they all knew and called him Big Daddy, but they didn't know the story, so- No. Yeah, that was-...
• 46:08
it was kinda cool to share it with the, you know, especially the Cedar Rapids guys. Oh, yeah. You know? They were great. Yeah. That was fun. And there, it, it's, it's, uh, uh, it's a interesting way to honor somebody.
• 46:21
Yeah. I li- I liked it. I mean, the cycling c- the cycling community kind of does a lot the same. I mean, it's like, uh, we've lo- we lost riders to car accidents and that kind of stuff, and it's, it's, it's less
• 46:35
of a parade. It's more of just, you know- Yep, mourning and- Uh, well, it's probably done-... raising a glass. Yeah, raising, and like everybody raised a glass at 6:00 tonight. You know? Yeah.
• 46:44
We did the hockey stick thing for, for Chuck. For Chuck, yep.
• 46:46
You know, and it's kinda, kind of along the same lines as that because we're scattered all over the place, you know, and, and firefighters I think are the same way. It was- Yep...
• 46:54
you had every fire department within I don't know how many miles of Rochester- Oh, man... were here. Yeah, it was- It was amazing. Yeah, it was. It was, uh, I, I didn't think I would ever
• 47:06
say those two words, you know, funeral and amazing in the same- Right... sentence, but it was, uh, I mean, it was a perfect homage to, to Chuck 'cause it just hit on so many levels, but man, yeah, it was, it was tough.
• 47:20
Well, yeah. I mean, I mean- It was tough to, to go through, but it was beautifully done. And the cool thing about Chuck was, um, he was able to perform the wedding for his stepdaughter? Stepdaughter. Yeah. Yeah.
• 47:32
So you know, he, he, he fought hard enough so he was able to do that and on. He's just- Yeah... that's how he is. You know, the crazy thing about Chuck is, and this, this is Chuck, is
• 47:45
I think a month before he passed was, was when I last saw him, and uh, he came in and we put some rims and tires on his Jeep, and, uh, great spirits, um, happy to, to have time to,
• 48:03
you know, s- end up saying goodbye, I guess. But, uh, you know, even up until his, you know, his last moments, it was- Yep... just all about family and,
• 48:14
you know, his friends, and he was more worried about, [laughs] you know, letting, letting other people down other than, uh, you know, losing his life, and that's just the guy that he was. I mean- Right. Absolutely Okay.
• 48:27
Um- Sorry to end it on a bad note No, we'll figure out something else to talk about. We got- Yeah... a few more minutes here. Um- But to Chuck. To Chuck. Oh, I could get another beer. Oh. Better get another beer.
• 48:39
[laughs] Time to drink more beer. Yeah. [laughs] I like that idea. And he'd be proud of us. Chuck would be pissed if you weren't drinking more beer. So you better, you better crack one into the mic too.
• 48:49
I think that was, uh... Chuck did that a couple times on that, uh, that one. Oh, that's the berry patch. Enjoy that. Nice. So yeah, to Chuck. I'll crack one in the mic for Chuck.
• 49:02
Yeah, you crack it on the mic for Chuck, yeah. [beer can opens] He would probably bitch about that, but that wasn't bad. This one, this one's fruity. He probably wouldn't touch this one. [laughs] No, he likes that shit.
• 49:16
No way. Yes. Oh, he does. Yes. Yeah, he was the guy that was always ordering the fru- the fruity drinks and shit. Fuck yeah. Oh man. He's that's, that's right up his- This one's definitely for Chuck...
• 49:24
that's right up his alley. Yep. Well- All right, so we got that. So you have to get ready for Santa Rampage. It's gonna be- Are you gonna be able to ride bike at all this winter? You got two kids playing...
• 49:34
Well, that was... So the last thing I was gonna bring up was hockey practice for you, 'cause you just started hockey practice. Yeah. So- That go well?... two kids, uh, going separate directions.
• 49:45
Um, every hockey parent knows how that goes. Chu is no exception. But, um, yeah, so talking about free time. He can't even open his beer. What's going on? I got no fingernails left. [laughs] Gotta quit eating them.
• 49:59
Chu, I've chewed them all off. [laughs] So I was, uh, the reffing coordinator got ahold of me and was like, "Hey, you know, you're, you got a different job. You're not working as late. Are you able to ref?"
• 50:11
And I'm like, "Yeah, you know, it shouldn't be a problem. Let me, uh, plug both kids' hockey schedules into the, the old calendar and see what it spits out." [laughs] It was like three hours a week.
• 50:27
[laughs] But yeah, so I'm like, "Uh, you know, I'll get ahold of you. There's a few days in there where, that are open, but at the same time, I'm probably... It'd be nice to get a...
• 50:36
You know how it is, it's nice to get away from the rink a little bit." Oh, God. I, I find myself going to the rink every day now. It's crazy. It's just... It, it's like I need to go for a bike ride.
• 50:46
Oh, well, for a bike ride, I'll stop by the rink. Yeah. It's, it's, it's become, it's become a new job. Well, and you, and you work there. Well, and this time- Kind of...
• 50:52
this time of year because there's this transfer of the guys from... The, the seasonal guys are just starting to come into the rink and work. Yeah. So, like, I'm filling in when they can't, but they're not there yet.
• 51:01
So... Parky, what the hell are you doing? He absolutely destroyed that ball. He did. Yep. Don't give me that look. [laughs] But so yeah, so I was like, "All right, into work" you know?
• 51:13
And then, and then so by the way, the rink manager is my assistant coach now. Yeah. [laughs] Which is, which is the weirdest thing ever. I bet. So my boss is my assistant coach. That's nice. When...
• 51:22
The first game, I'm gonna get fired. [laughs] And I'm gonna fire him, so neither one of us will have a job- There you go... after we get done with that. [laughs] Exactly. That's... But it's, you know, it's funny and I...
• 51:32
It's probably more so for you, because you have keys to the building, so you know, there are days where it's like I'm, you know, driving by and I'm like, "Oh shit, I gotta go do this" you know?
• 51:42
And it's like, you know- Oh, I know. Yeah... it's like noon, and I'm like, "Oh, Bob's here. Hey, Bob. You mind if I, uh, [laughs] pop in here real quick? Yeah, yeah, fine."
• 51:51
It's like you find yourself, even when you don't have practice or games or whatever, you find yourself at the rink. Well, it's... Yeah. Even when it's, once, just once the season gets going it's better- Yeah...
• 52:01
but it's not... It, by no way it's, it's easy. No. You're there and you always forget something. Yeah. And now we've got, we've got... We have a... It's kinda cool this year.
• 52:13
We have got a big volunteer group that wanna come out and help. Yeah. That's- Which-... kind of been, uh, the theme for us too. If we're- Which-... talking parents or yeah? Yeah. No, no, no. Play- Or just in general?
• 52:21
Uh, guys that are coaching. Guys that wanna come out and help coach. Like- Oh, cool... a guy wants to come out and work with the defensemen, you know, that type of stuff. Yeah.
• 52:26
And guys that we, guys that we, we've for years we've been talking to about- Trying to get them to come coach... not even that, just bending their ear about- Yeah... how you would do this, how you do that.
• 52:35
And so they're all coming out and helping now, and it's like [laughs] we've... Our coaches' room is like a big closet. Yeah. You know? So there's not room for anything in there. And Noteman is, is a...
• 52:44
My head coach is, is an absolute pig, so there's like zero room in there at all for anything. [laughs] Yeah. Well, that's pretty cool. I mean, we've had just... I don't know what it is, if it's just a,
• 52:57
a gap or, like, a generational thing, but, like, I mean, we had too many volunteers this year, you know? And even coaches for that matter.
• 53:08
Like, we're kinda, we're kinda glad that Claire ended up pregnant and couldn't come help us, because it was like, you know- Well, who all do you have? Well, I mean, it's me, Case, Nikki, Cora are, like, the main coaches.
• 53:22
Yeah. But then we have, um, Maddie Sawyer, when she's in town, wants to help. Oh. I mean, she's deployed. Sure, yeah. She's deployed again. Yep, she's in Poland. Uh, Nicole Rawlings. Oh. Um,
• 53:35
Megan Adair, Jesse Johnston, you know, some former players. Uh, Brooke Leon is back in town, and it's like all of a sudden- [laughs]...
• 53:43
you know, it's like we got all these people, but then I can guarantee you, like, three years from now or two years from now when we're scratching for coaches we're- Well, your problem is, your biggest problem is you're coaching girls- Yep...
• 53:53
and then the pregnant thing comes into play. The, that's the problem. Marriage and pregnant comes into play, and you got really good coaches that you lose because of that.
• 53:59
Yeah, and then Claire and Nicole Rawlings were... She's the... They're both pregnant, and, you know, they both- Yeah... both played Division I hockey, so it's like tough miss on those girls. [laughs] Oh.
• 54:12
So are you and I running the U15 group this year then, 'cause they're all gonna be pregnant? Probably. [laughs] All right. So let's see what else we got. I think that's about it. I think we killed the list.
• 54:22
I think we covered everything. It didn't take us two hours. No. Well, no. We did good. Yeah. Well, um, we do need to bring a couple of the other ones in. We, we...
• 54:30
James and the, the Tuesday night guys- I thought they'd actually stop out by now. They're, they're actually downtown drinking high-class whiskey and- Well, they planned on stopping out. Well, they were talking about it.
• 54:40
Or they're gonna show up... I would say they're... It's probably too late for them to show up now. People have to work in the morning. Yeah. I know they're bitching, "Well, I have to be up at 5:30." For what? Coffee.
• 54:50
[laughs] Fuck you. [laughs] Hey, I... That, that's one thing that I, like, I haven't given up is my Friday morning coffee. You're such a dick. I know it. Where do you go? Uh, Caribou now. Okay. I'm not happy about it.
• 55:03
We used to go to Dunn Brothers, which was fantastic coffees. I liked Dunn Brothers. I do too, but- And they had good food. Oh, yeah, but the people that...
• 55:09
Well, I, I, I'll be honest with you, I haven't been there in probably a c- a year or two. Okay. Uh- Yeah, it's been more than that for me... the South one. The South one, yeah. Yep.
• 55:16
Um, when, when, uh, Jill and Martha left- Oh, I didn't realize... the place went to shit. I didn't realize that happened. Yeah, when they w- when they left they went to shit- Yeah...
• 55:24
and the people that, that were running it were, no offense intended, but they were horrible. Yeah. So, like, and like, and, and that one was a big bicycle stopping. Like, the, the- Oh, sure... the one group, um...
• 55:36
Well, there's more than one group, but I know for sure the one group that, that rode on, um, uh, New Year's Day- Yep... that was the starting place. Like, that Dunn Brothers was...
• 55:46
Their parking lot wasn't great, but it was, it was the starting place for a lot of rides because the roadies could go south out of town- Yeah... from there and do a decent, you know...
• 55:55
Fuck, you could do a nice 50-mile ride and hardly see a car. Right. So it's a great place to go. However, that didn't work out, so with these new people working there, I don't know, I don't know what's happened to the...
• 56:06
I, w- we got so disgusted with it that we just quit going. Yeah. Is it... They're still open, right? Well, yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's still there. I just don't know what's going on there.
• 56:14
I mean, I don't know how it's- 'Cause we always used to go to the north one by the rec center. Yeah. Well, yeah, we still... We'll, we'll stop in there occasionally. We'll go for...
• 56:22
We can go do, like, a about a 30-mile ride and end up there. Yep. So, which is kinda nice. But, but then now what's happened is, so [laughs] beer drinking or, uh, coffee drinking, bicycling, we go to, we ride to S- St.
• 56:34
Charles and go to, uh, Cabin Coffee instead. Cabin Coffee's got good coffee, too. And they got good food. And Sue can get gluten-free. Yep. So we go there a lot. Oh, that's a... They got a gluten-free joint there. Yeah.
• 56:45
Oh, cool. Yeah, so it's, it's good for her, so she's, she's a happy camper and- Yeah... and we jump on the tandem and it's, well, it's what? 26 miles each way. And they got a Hardee's there now. In St. Charles? Yeah.
• 56:56
It's at the, it's at the truck stop. So you gotta go up the hill, up by 90. Oh, I'm no [laughs] sorry, I'm not riding up the hill to 90 to go to, to go see a Hardee's for God's sake. You're missing out. Oh, yeah. Right.
• 57:06
You're missing out. Yeah, right. Well, as s- The last time you had Hardee's. I couldn't tell you. I don't, I don't go to... Sue's celiac. We don't go to any fast food places anymore. Yeah.
• 57:12
Like, like- I'm a fat guy, so, like- [laughs]... you know, something like a, like a Frisco Melt just hits different, you know? When they take away- No, I don't know. When they take away, like, certain fat-kid- [laughs]
• 57:26
... fast food joints, like, I never really ate it until it was gone. And then, like, one night we drove all the way to Austin just to get Hardee's. Did you really? [laughs] We did.
• 57:40
There may- I may or may not have had beers involved on that one... Okay. So, so I got one more quick story. So do you do White Castle? Are you- I will. I will.
• 57:46
Are you, are you a concert in the cities, have to hit White Castle afterwards guy? If I, if I am in an area with a White Castle, I feel like I should hit it. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And it's not great, but it's like a...
• 57:56
it's just- No, it's White Castle. You have to go. You just have to go. Yeah. You just have to do it. Right. Yeah. We- When in Rome. Yeah.
• 58:01
We, uh, uh, again, till Sue got celiac, when we would go to Frozen Four, the first thing she would look at was, is where's the Cl- I mean, we would- [laughs] Where's the Whitey's... seriously.
• 58:10
We would get off the airplane and go grab our luggage, and we always had bikes. We would, we would- Yep... take our bikes with, right? And we would go.
• 58:18
So the first thing we'd do is load up her car, get the bikes, put the bikes in the car, and then [laughs] find the fucking closest White Castle. [laughs] How stupid is that? Oh, you gotta do it, though. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 58:27
So this year I'm making, uh, Thanksgiving. We d- we have a tournament right afterwards, so Thanksgiving is gonna be, like, nothing. Yep. It's gonna be, like, a quick meal, and so I'm making the dressing. Nice.
• 58:39
Did you know there's a White Castle dressing? No, there is not. Yes. And you are not doing it. [laughs] Dude, yes, I am. [laughs] It's, it's literally you cut up a bunch of White Castle burgers- No...
• 58:49
and, and, like, I don't remember. It's, it's like White Castle burgers and something, and you just, like, literally bake it. Oh, my God.
• 58:55
Oh, dude, don't tell me you're not coming over for s- I was gonna say you better save some. [laughs] So we're definitely gonna do that. Yeah. It'll be awesome, yeah. Good.
• 59:06
I'm glad y- I'm glad you're not totally- [laughs]... [laughs] not totally a- No... a, a, a, uh, 'cause you're, you know, Seville high school coach now. Oh, God. I don't know what that means. I don't either.
• 59:18
[laughs] All right. Just save some Whitey's, uh, gravy for me, I guess. Oh, my God. All right. Um, I think that's it. We need to get out of here. We've done enough damage for one night. Maybe.
• 59:29
We're back at w- uh, well, we're gonna get back on schedule. Yeah. Even though hockey season's on, we've got bike stuff to talk about. There's other stuff coming up in the next few weeks. So yeah, we'll be back.
• 59:39
All right. Thanks, man. Talk to you later. Yep.
• 59:43
  [outro music]
