- 0:03Speaker 1: Lot in lots of news today, four guests.
- 0:06Speaker 2: If you're listening to us via podcast, you'll see those
- 0:08Speaker 2: in different episodes. Sometimes people ask, but if you're on YouTube,
- 0:12Speaker 2: just get the straight two hours of Bronkratz and KPTE,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Kevin Polar KP before we start. I guess this is
- 0:19Speaker 2: how we should start. Did you see and feel for
- 0:24Speaker 2: Orioles manager Craig Albernas the other day?
- 0:27Speaker 3: The answer to both is yes, I saw and I felt.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Obviously what happened to him is probably. It's different when
- 0:34Speaker 3: you're a player, you're kind of expected to go out
- 0:36Speaker 3: there and play. We're not expected. I wanted to go
- 0:38Speaker 3: out there and play. There's some limitations, the fact that
- 0:40Speaker 3: he gets to sit in the dugout and not have
- 0:42Speaker 3: to go compete a little easier to bounce back. But
- 0:45Speaker 3: when you're talking about you know, facial and eyebones, it's
- 0:48Speaker 3: a little bit different than a shattered nose.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So his report was broken jaw hit by foul ball,
- 0:55Speaker 2: at least seven fractures in the cheek area, and no surgery.
- 1:01Speaker 2: The jaw doesn't need to be wired shut, but it
- 1:04Speaker 2: did sound like a baby food diet was in the works.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I just read stuff. So I don't know if anything
- 1:12Speaker 2: was said in jest, but I actually think that's probably
- 1:15Speaker 2: the case.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So it's tough times.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean luckily no, Luckily no surgery because the
- 1:22Speaker 3: jaw can be you know, obviously very difficult if you
- 1:26Speaker 3: get wired shut. Probably his ability to manage, communicate, obviously
- 1:30Speaker 3: go argue with the umpires is a little bit more limited.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think there's some of us that you know, get
- 1:36Speaker 3: a little bit older, would not would benefit from.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Being on that liquid diet.
- 1:40Speaker 3: But also the the the cheek area in the face,
- 1:42Speaker 3: the fact he doesn't have to have surgery, because that's
- 1:44Speaker 3: it's pretty serious when your your face gets cut open.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So what was a really scary situation, which is still
- 1:50Speaker 3: kind of a scary situation. You're so close to you know,
- 1:54Speaker 3: the batter's box when you're there in the dugout, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 3: the best case scenario for him plain years what happened
- 2:03Speaker 3: to me, I was very lucky, Yeah, I was very
- 2:08Speaker 3: lucky that it was a direct shot strictly to my nose,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and I just I mean, I can't even tell you
- 2:15Speaker 3: how many different sorts of breaks I had in my nose,
- 2:18Speaker 3: but it was only my nose. You know, I had
- 2:20Speaker 3: no concussion symptoms. I had no like blurry vision, I
- 2:23Speaker 3: had no facial fractures. I mean that also played into
- 2:27Speaker 3: the part while I was able to come back so quickly,
- 2:29Speaker 3: as you know, A couple of days after, I went
- 2:31Speaker 3: and had what they consider a closed reduction surgery where
- 2:34Speaker 3: they don't cut me open. They basically, you know, put
- 2:37Speaker 3: you out and they smush it back together to kind
- 2:39Speaker 3: of form a nose, and once the once, the uh
- 2:44Speaker 3: you know once, I I think it was like seven days.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I just couldn't get my heart rate up. Once I
- 2:49Speaker 4: was cleared from that, I was fine to play.
- 2:51Speaker 5: You know.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I didn't have a lot of use of my nose
- 2:53Speaker 4: for breathing.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And then in the off season when the season was over,
- 2:56Speaker 3: I went and had like a full you know, reconstruction
- 2:59Speaker 3: of my airwait and my nose and everything. And honestly,
- 3:02Speaker 3: it was a blessing in the sky because look at
- 3:03Speaker 3: this thing now, Crats.
- 3:05Speaker 4: I don't know if you remember before, but much improved.
- 3:09Speaker 6: It was terrible. I was thinking about when when you
- 3:11Speaker 6: were gonna pop on the show. I was like, I
- 3:13Speaker 6: just remember how ugly you were before you had like
- 3:16Speaker 6: a you know, you had like a like a nose
- 3:19Speaker 6: like mine, super huge and like kind of tilted. And
- 3:22Speaker 6: we used to talk, you know, hey, who's getting set
- 3:24Speaker 6: down today because one of our relievers, one of our leaves,
- 3:27Speaker 6: just went three innings, so they got to bring someone
- 3:29Speaker 6: else up. So it was either you or me because
- 3:31Speaker 6: they were never sending totally down.
- 3:35Speaker 3: He's not wrong, he's not wrong. I mean, it's it's
- 3:38Speaker 3: the truth. The truth hurts. And you know, all all
- 3:41Speaker 3: kidding aside. You know, that was kind of like, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you kind of have to laugh at yourself in certain situations.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And I always, you know, say it was a blessing
- 3:49Speaker 3: in the sky, so that I got hit in the nose,
- 3:51Speaker 3: you know, if it was like a different part of
- 3:53Speaker 3: my body, I could have. You know, there's other parts
- 3:55Speaker 3: of my body that we were fine. But if there
- 3:57Speaker 3: was one area on my body pre getting hit in
- 3:59Speaker 3: the face that I would have liked to change, it
- 4:01Speaker 3: would have been my nose.
- 4:02Speaker 4: So thank you, Jacob Web, thank.
- 4:06Speaker 2: You for that ninety four to the face. I am
- 4:08Speaker 2: now beautiful.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Stop, welcome for a slider, Stay on the heater, KP.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I was in change up. I'll be honestly, I was
- 4:15Speaker 4: in change.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Up leaning out. This one's gotta break right, break my nose.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Wow, it broke. It just broke something else.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you're our baseball to the face specialist, among other
- 4:27Speaker 2: specialties that you have.
- 4:29Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Top news in terms of what happened in Thursday's slate,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and then, of course we'll get to some news that
- 4:37Speaker 2: broke this morning.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But let's start with the near no no charge out. Yeah,
- 4:43Speaker 1: charging the mound with Parker Messick.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Eight innings, two hits, two walks, nine strikeouts, gave up
- 4:49Speaker 2: a couple knocks in the ninth. He carried that bad
- 4:52Speaker 2: boy into the ninth inning and no, No. At one
- 4:54Speaker 2: hundred and six pitches. It was not dramatic. In the
- 4:58Speaker 2: ninth it was one pitch from Leodi Tavares knocks it
- 5:02Speaker 2: through the right side Kratz, and it gives attention to
- 5:06Speaker 2: someone who has looked really good in limited time so
- 5:10Speaker 2: far in his career, with Cleveland coming up last year
- 5:13Speaker 2: and looking like he's carrying that momentum into this season.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Did you know what his era was before the game?
- 5:21Speaker 5: Raise your hand career if you.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Know, just this season, nobody had heard about Parker Messi's
- 5:27Speaker 6: start to the season. Everyone was talking about Jose Soriano,
- 5:31Speaker 6: sho hey o Tani Parker Messik had like a point
- 5:34Speaker 6: seven ERA in his first three starts, and he goes
- 5:40Speaker 6: out there and I thought he was gonna do it. No,
- 5:44Speaker 6: no jinx is aside, no like it's it just felt
- 5:48Speaker 6: like the way he was doing it, I thought he
- 5:51Speaker 6: was going to be able to get it done.
- 5:53Speaker 5: And I thought it was gonna be quick.
- 5:54Speaker 6: I just didn't think it was gonna be the first
- 5:55Speaker 6: pitch he was gonna lose it in the ninth and
- 5:58Speaker 6: then two hits all crap, and then the two runs crap.
- 6:02Speaker 6: His era goes up. He almost has a historic night
- 6:05Speaker 6: and then his ERA goes up.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be honest with you. I was watching the
- 6:12Speaker 3: game too. Good buddy of mine, Cody Allen. Those were
- 6:15Speaker 3: his first games he was doing for the broadcast. I
- 6:19Speaker 3: didn't message him during it, but I'm thinking to myself,
- 6:21Speaker 3: what if the hell of a first game of the
- 6:23Speaker 3: season to be there for.
- 6:24Speaker 4: But I kind of just got this. I kind of
- 6:27Speaker 4: felt I kind of.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Felt for him a little bit because that inning leading
- 6:30Speaker 3: up to the ninth, which would be the bottom of
- 6:33Speaker 3: the eighth, kind of just dragged on a little bit,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and you know, as a pitcher, they just want to
- 6:37Speaker 3: get back out there, get into a routine. But I
- 6:39Speaker 3: didn't know much about him, you know, I just happened
- 6:41Speaker 3: to turn the TV on. It was I think it
- 6:44Speaker 3: was the only game going on at the time, so
- 6:46Speaker 3: I had watched him throw maybe three innings up until
- 6:49Speaker 3: the ninth inning. And you know, as a guy who
- 6:52Speaker 3: at the back end of his career was you know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: called upon to hit lefties, that change up that he
- 6:57Speaker 3: has would have given me an absolute problems. I would
- 7:01Speaker 3: have lost sleep thinking about his change it because he's nasty.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But and then the other thought I thought about too,
- 7:06Speaker 3: is and krats. You could probably speak on this a
- 7:09Speaker 3: little bit too, But I was thinking, younger guy. You
- 7:13Speaker 3: know the pitch count, you know up to one hundred.
- 7:15Speaker 4: How many different.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Organizations would allow him to go out there, a young
- 7:19Speaker 3: pitcher to go out there and you know, kind of
- 7:21Speaker 3: pass that one hundred pitch threshold. I think it was
- 7:23Speaker 3: a kind of a blessing that he was in Cleveland,
- 7:25Speaker 3: because they've been known to just know how to manage
- 7:28Speaker 3: their pictures.
- 7:29Speaker 4: They have good feel for Were those inning stressful? You know?
- 7:32Speaker 4: Is he in a good rhythm.
- 7:33Speaker 3: You know, they kind of are one organization that feels
- 7:35Speaker 3: like they kind of throw the pitch count out a
- 7:37Speaker 3: little bit.
- 7:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think I think it's less the organization.
- 7:42Speaker 6: Some organizations are very helicopter parent. I think it's good.
- 7:47Speaker 6: As his manager was Steven Vote, I think Voter understood it.
- 7:52Speaker 6: I think Voter also understood that you have Austin hedges
- 7:56Speaker 6: behind the dish and he'll let you know if, like, hey,
- 7:59Speaker 6: I think were taxing this guy too much. Everybody wants
- 8:03Speaker 6: the no hitter, but at what cost?
- 8:06Speaker 5: And I when I.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Went back and watched it, all the balls that were
- 8:09Speaker 6: put in play, all the striker, it just didn't feel
- 8:11Speaker 6: like it was that taxing. To me, it wasn't. He
- 8:14Speaker 6: didn't have any traffic. I think he had two walks.
- 8:18Speaker 6: It just felt like he was cruising to those one
- 8:21Speaker 6: hundred pitches. I didn't even I should have looked. I
- 8:23Speaker 6: didn't even see what his other pitch counts were. The
- 8:26Speaker 6: rest of the year. I mean, you know, he got
- 8:29Speaker 6: up to eighty four, ninety one, and seventy six, so
- 8:33Speaker 6: he's kind of kind of built up from his first
- 8:35Speaker 6: start where he was seventy six all the way up
- 8:37Speaker 6: to ninety one, so it's okay to throw a little
- 8:40Speaker 6: bit more.
- 8:41Speaker 5: I thought he could have finished it.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Shoot Kratz. The world has a cord problem. Wires everywhere.
- 8:49Speaker 2: It's twenty twenty six and it is time to get
- 8:51Speaker 2: a Ridge wallet.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Five and one. It's not a wallet, it's a charger.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Look at this thing. It sticks to your phone. Push
- 9:00Speaker 6: the button. It charges your phone while you can charge
- 9:03Speaker 6: two different items at the same time. Oh and don't
- 9:06Speaker 6: forget while it's charging. You got at a little lean
- 9:11Speaker 6: to John that'll help it sit right there. Appreciate your
- 9:14Speaker 6: Ridge wallett. This is so nice, which.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Is great for me.
- 9:17Speaker 2: If I'm at the airport and I'm watching a game,
- 9:19Speaker 2: I can charge five devices and then I can just
- 9:21Speaker 2: watch something on the phone.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Of course, they still.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Have the wallets that are money too, and we know
- 9:25Speaker 2: the code.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It's nice and simple.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It's foul foul one thing to pack. Five ways to power.
- 9:31Speaker 2: You can find Ridge's power bank at best Buy or
- 9:33Speaker 2: our listeners can get ten percent off at Ridge dot
- 9:35Speaker 2: com by using code foul at checkout. Head to Ridge
- 9:38Speaker 2: dot com use code foul and you're all set. After
- 9:40Speaker 2: your purchase, they'll ask you where you heard about him.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Please support ft untel them we sent.
- 9:44Speaker 4: You you mentioned Stephen vote to.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Another thing that I really like too is you've seen
- 9:49Speaker 3: it so many times where if they allow a guy
- 9:52Speaker 3: to go out there and kind of chase the no no,
- 9:54Speaker 3: as soon as they give up a hit, they take
- 9:55Speaker 3: him out. He gave up that hit on that first pitch,
- 9:58Speaker 3: they brought the pitching coach out, more than likely to
- 10:00Speaker 3: get the bullpen ready, but also maybe to just settle
- 10:03Speaker 3: him down a little bit.
- 10:04Speaker 4: I love that they allowed him to face another hitter.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Then he give up the second hit and it's like, Okay,
- 10:08Speaker 3: your day's over. But so many times they kind of
- 10:10Speaker 3: pull the cord. You know, you lose the no hitter.
- 10:13Speaker 3: But being able to go CG and a shutout is
- 10:16Speaker 3: also a huge accomplishment for a young pitcher. So I
- 10:19Speaker 3: love the fact they allowed him to face another batter
- 10:22Speaker 3: after he gave up the hit.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And you know, unfortunately it didn't work out.
- 10:25Speaker 3: But I think he just put himself on the map,
- 10:27Speaker 3: you know, in the baseball world.
- 10:28Speaker 4: You know he's going to be a guy. At least
- 10:30Speaker 4: for me. Next time he touches the mound, I'm going
- 10:32Speaker 4: to be tuning in.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Then they we're in trouble. I mean, Kate Smith is
- 10:36Speaker 2: one of the best relievers in the game. Yeah, became
- 10:39Speaker 2: a game really fast. It's like, oh oh, Basis loaded
- 10:42Speaker 2: nobody out sidefly double and then he was able to
- 10:47Speaker 2: shut the door Kaid Smith. But it got a little
- 10:50Speaker 2: dicey there in the four to two win for Cleveland.
- 10:52Speaker 2: The other thing that's crazy is just how long it's
- 10:54Speaker 2: been since the organization has had a no No KP
- 10:57Speaker 2: forty five years May of nineteen eighty one, Len Barker.
- 11:01Speaker 2: That's and it's not like the organization has never had them.
- 11:04Speaker 2: And also the organization has been around forever. If you
- 11:07Speaker 2: root the franchise back, there's been fourteen of them, including
- 11:10Speaker 2: three from Bob Feller, but none since the early eighties.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Well, and I just think about, you know, the time
- 11:15Speaker 3: that I was competing against you know, Cleveland, and.
- 11:17Speaker 4: There was probably there was great pitching before that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: But I'm thinking in like the twenty tens, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 3: you got primetime Corey Klueber there, you know, multiple Cy
- 11:25Speaker 3: Young Award winner, you got a guy and Danny Salazar
- 11:28Speaker 3: who just had stuff. You know, you had Cookie Carrasco
- 11:31Speaker 3: there just to name a couple guys, the fact that
- 11:33Speaker 3: they haven't had one in so many years just speaks
- 11:37Speaker 3: to the difficulty of you know, and there's a huge
- 11:39Speaker 3: element of luck that goes into it. You obviously have
- 11:41Speaker 3: to have your a game on. You know, sometimes guys
- 11:44Speaker 3: are gonna hit the ball hard, you gotta have some
- 11:46Speaker 3: you know, defense behind you. But you know, I think
- 11:49Speaker 3: that's why we all tune in, is the you know,
- 11:51Speaker 3: the rarity that they they they happen, you know, and
- 11:53Speaker 3: when you get a guy going, you know, eight innings
- 11:56Speaker 3: no hits, you know, I think the entire baseball world
- 11:58Speaker 3: tuned in and was rooting for him.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And you get the signature defensive plays too. Kratz Quan's
- 12:05Speaker 2: catch against the wall. Jose Ramirez made some nice plays,
- 12:09Speaker 2: including the catch against the netting. You got you had
- 12:12Speaker 2: some signature moments if it ended up completing itself.
- 12:17Speaker 5: For sure, you had.
- 12:18Speaker 6: I mean you didn't have the like robbed home run
- 12:21Speaker 6: or the ridiculous diving play in the hole, but there
- 12:24Speaker 6: was he needed his guys behind him, and you know,
- 12:28Speaker 6: some people were like we even talked about in our
- 12:29Speaker 6: production meeting, like oh man, that ground ball that was
- 12:33Speaker 6: you know the base hit, the first base hit was
- 12:35Speaker 6: right to where the second basement should be.
- 12:38Speaker 5: But you go back and there was two.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Or three, definitely two balls that the shift helped him,
- 12:47Speaker 6: including Pete Alonso hit one up the middle that the
- 12:51Speaker 6: second basement was almost exactly where we just had it
- 12:53Speaker 6: on the screen, basically right behind second, just a little
- 12:56Speaker 6: to the right of second, and he just he made
- 13:01Speaker 6: the play routine and the no hitter would have been
- 13:03Speaker 6: broken up earlier had they played a complete, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 6: no shift, just a regular straight up. So look, the
- 13:11Speaker 6: shift giveth and the shift taketh away.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yeah, if we.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Knew where the guys, if we knew where the guys
- 13:18Speaker 3: were going to hit it, then we would have more
- 13:19Speaker 3: no hitters. Right Like, we're playing the probabilities of where
- 13:22Speaker 3: we believe the guys.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Are going to hit it.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And to crass this point, we never talk about when
- 13:27Speaker 3: a guy's in a shift and they do take the
- 13:29Speaker 3: hit away. It's always the one where oh man, he
- 13:31Speaker 3: should have been playing, you know, in his normal position,
- 13:33Speaker 3: he would have had a no hitter. It's like, no,
- 13:35Speaker 3: if the second baseman would have played his traditional spot,
- 13:39Speaker 3: we wouldn't be talking about, you know, him going eight innings,
- 13:41Speaker 3: he probably would have lost the no hitter in the
- 13:42Speaker 3: second or third inning.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Shifting works. The entire league does it. It's not even
- 13:49Speaker 2: a debate. Yeah, shifting works. You don't play straight up
- 13:53Speaker 2: old school baseball style on everything. We had to make
- 13:56Speaker 2: roles to adjust it so that it didn't look insane,
- 13:59Speaker 2: and I like the but shifting still occurs in a
- 14:02Speaker 2: different way and it works.
- 14:04Speaker 3: And if you look at that overhead, they showed to
- 14:06Speaker 3: where the positioning were. I mean, you can notice the
- 14:08Speaker 3: outfielders were also shifted to.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You know, they had a little bit more pull.
- 14:11Speaker 3: They had a little bit more pull, you know, traditionally
- 14:14Speaker 3: in the infield, and it looks like the outfielder is
- 14:16Speaker 3: playing a little bit more opposite field gap. So that's
- 14:19Speaker 3: that's just the nature of the game we play. We
- 14:21Speaker 3: have so much information where it's not like, you know,
- 14:25Speaker 3: we used to just say.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Hey, this guy's a poll hitter. We move everyone to
- 14:27Speaker 4: the pull side.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Like they know, Tavares against left handed pitching is more
- 14:32Speaker 3: likely to pull the ball on the ground, but he
- 14:33Speaker 3: might hit the ball to right center a little bit
- 14:35Speaker 3: more in the air. So it's just, you know, it's
- 14:38Speaker 3: just what happens. You know, baseball is a crazy game.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Sometimes guys, you know, find holes.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Massa leading or hitting not hitting.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Walking the lead off man to start the game is
- 14:49Speaker 2: always a classic too. I just picture somebody either probably
- 14:52Speaker 2: fan in the ballpark.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Being like, oh, here we go, and then they're like, yeah,
- 14:56Speaker 1: here we go.
- 14:57Speaker 6: Then that fan hadn't been watching Parker Messic pitch this year,
- 15:01Speaker 6: because this dude's been in control, not even just this year,
- 15:05Speaker 6: like coming up last year, he's got a eleven starts,
- 15:08Speaker 6: twelve starts.
- 15:09Speaker 5: This was his twelve start, like a two e RA
- 15:13Speaker 5: and don't like, don't get it twisted. He keeps this up.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Another Rookie of the Year candidate. So obviously he's got
- 15:20Speaker 6: a long way to go, as all the rookies do.
- 15:22Speaker 6: But that's a good start.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And there's just a stupid amount of competition this year
- 15:27Speaker 2: on the on the rookie list.
- 15:30Speaker 4: It's it's you just think, I mean.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And it's so fitting that it's a pitcher in Cleveland
- 15:36Speaker 3: too that probably not a lot of us had heard
- 15:39Speaker 3: of up until this point. But they just do something
- 15:41Speaker 3: over there and you have to credit you know, their
- 15:43Speaker 3: pitching department, their they're pitching coach that's been there for
- 15:46Speaker 3: you know, in eternity.
- 15:47Speaker 4: But they just have a knack for finding great pitching.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And this is just another guy that's you know, putting
- 15:54Speaker 3: a Cleveland uniform on and is going to probably go
- 15:56Speaker 3: on and do great things in his career.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Hey, one more thing from that game before we get
- 16:00Speaker 2: to Ken. Stephen Vote has friends and he likes to
- 16:07Speaker 2: prank his friends. The Guardian Skipper pranked his former right
- 16:13Speaker 2: hand man, very good friend, Craig Albernas, who's running the
- 16:16Speaker 2: Oriols dug out these days, and Albertnaz went into the
- 16:19Speaker 2: visitors manager's office where the desks and the chairs were
- 16:23Speaker 2: all kid sized. Also a Spider Man shower curtain, bluey stuff.
- 16:29Speaker 2: This from Jake Rill, who I think covers the Oriols
- 16:32Speaker 2: for MLB. So that's fun, well played.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I love it.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Shout out to Chrestie what's his name is it? Willy
- 16:40Speaker 3: Willy on the visiting side, you know, because that takes
- 16:45Speaker 3: that takes a little bit of work from the you know,
- 16:46Speaker 3: visiting clubhouse guy to be on board move the furniture out.
- 16:49Speaker 3: But I love it, you know, it just it just
- 16:51Speaker 3: kind of speaks, you know, the game is still bigger.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Than baseball, like friendships last forever.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Obviously they had a great relationship, you know, learning under Stephen,
- 17:00Speaker 3: you know, allowed him this opportunity. You know, just because
- 17:02Speaker 3: they're competing on the field doesn't mean they can't be
- 17:04Speaker 3: friends and make light of the situation. And you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: obviously everything kind of changes when and it just goes
- 17:11Speaker 3: into perspective too. You know, he gets hitting the dug
- 17:13Speaker 3: out there, you know, that's where you know the game's bigger,
- 17:16Speaker 3: you know, but hopefully you know, after getting hit in
- 17:19Speaker 3: the face, he has to go back and sit in
- 17:20Speaker 3: the kid size desk. Maybe it's not as funny then,
- 17:22Speaker 3: but it still just kind of makes light of a
- 17:25Speaker 3: fun situation.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Show me the money.
- 17:37Speaker 2: We look at that footage of anyone that has any
- 17:39Speaker 2: sliver of equity in the San Diego Padres this morning
- 17:42Speaker 2: as we get the news that they are going to
- 17:45Speaker 2: be sold.
- 17:45Speaker 1: There's approval processes.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And all of that, but we'll learn a lot more
- 17:49Speaker 2: right now with our friend Darren Smith. Darren, great to
- 17:51Speaker 2: see you again as we have you back and really
- 17:53Speaker 2: appreciate the time to talk about what's going on with
- 17:56Speaker 2: this three point nine billion dollar number and to learn
- 18:00Speaker 2: more about who this owner is. So is a Feliciano
- 18:03Speaker 2: connected in the soccer world?
- 18:04Speaker 1: What do you know?
- 18:06Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 18:06Speaker 8: Unfortunately, what I know is I am not one of
- 18:08Speaker 8: those people that has invested in the San Diego Padres.
- 18:11Speaker 8: So I have missed my window. So yep, I'm outside
- 18:15Speaker 8: looking in. So I would be doing Friar territory until
- 18:17Speaker 8: the day that I died. But thank you for the invite.
- 18:20Speaker 8: What we know is he was one of four finalists,
- 18:23Speaker 8: and you know, people had varying opinions about who it
- 18:27Speaker 8: was that they wanted to end up winning the bid
- 18:30Speaker 8: for ownership, and there were arguments made for and against
- 18:33Speaker 8: all of them. For instance, Joe Lacup is the owner
- 18:35Speaker 8: of the Golden State Warriors, and people are familiar with
- 18:38Speaker 8: the Warriors' success having won four NBA championships, so that
- 18:42Speaker 8: was appealing for a lot of people. There was another
- 18:44Speaker 8: guy named Dan Friedkin, who is another private equity guy
- 18:49Speaker 8: who owns a couple of European soccer clubs and had
- 18:53Speaker 8: roots in southern California. Had roots in San Diego in fact,
- 18:55Speaker 8: was born here as father ran a business here. So
- 18:58Speaker 8: people were interested in that. Feliciana was not one. I
- 19:02Speaker 8: think that many people were saying, oh, yes, absolutely, let's
- 19:06Speaker 8: make the case for him. But you know that he
- 19:08Speaker 8: ends up winning this bid, per the Athletic in the
- 19:11Speaker 8: Wall Street Journal. I think now we're all learning a
- 19:13Speaker 8: little bit. Since the news broke this morning, It's been
- 19:15Speaker 8: three hours of everybody heading up Wikipedia and trying to
- 19:20Speaker 8: learn as much about Chelsea Football Club and trying to
- 19:23Speaker 8: learn as much about clear Lake Capital as they possibly can.
- 19:26Speaker 8: And and you know, I would say the there's a
- 19:30Speaker 8: cautious level of optimism here in San Diego. And you know,
- 19:34Speaker 8: fans I think are right to be a little bit curious,
- 19:38Speaker 8: maybe a little apprehensive because they they don't know, and
- 19:42Speaker 8: you know what you don't know sometimes can you know,
- 19:45Speaker 8: it could could set off some alarm bells. But you know,
- 19:48Speaker 8: I do think there's there's like a couple of range
- 19:51Speaker 8: of emotions. You know, people I think also just wanted
- 19:53Speaker 8: to find out, well, what is next, like like we
- 19:56Speaker 8: sort of can't be in this limbo state forever. With
- 19:59Speaker 8: the Sidler family announcing back in November that they were
- 20:03Speaker 8: going to sell the club, I think people are anxious
- 20:06Speaker 8: for a resolution, and now it appears like we're getting it.
- 20:09Speaker 8: So as we're learning a little bit about Jose Feliciano
- 20:12Speaker 8: as we're learning about his wife, Kwanza Jones. I think
- 20:15Speaker 8: people initially are liking what they hear. Jared Diamond of
- 20:18Speaker 8: the Wall Street Journal has been making the rounds here
- 20:20Speaker 8: in southern California. I just got off the phone with
- 20:22Speaker 8: them fifteen minutes ago. Sounds like this is a bit
- 20:27Speaker 8: of a legacy play for Feliciano and his wife. They're
- 20:32Speaker 8: interested in moving a ton of their philanthropy to the market,
- 20:35Speaker 8: which I think is hitting the right note early on.
- 20:39Speaker 8: So early on, I think people are blown away by
- 20:44Speaker 8: the sale price, like wow, three point nine billion dollars,
- 20:47Speaker 8: But early returns seem like there's more optimism than there
- 20:51Speaker 8: is pessimism. But you know a healthy amount of well,
- 20:54Speaker 8: let's wait and see as well.
- 20:57Speaker 7: Guys, you ever get it from your children all the time, Dad,

- 21:58Speaker 2: to know, is this a winner? Is this gunslinger? Is
- 22:00Speaker 2: this someone who understands what it takes to win in baseball?
- 22:04Speaker 2: So it's all happening fast. But from what you've read
- 22:07Speaker 2: or heard so far, the only comparison we can use
- 22:11Speaker 2: is his involvement with Chelsea football.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Right, I know almost nothing.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Actually, this would have been a day to have aj
- 22:17Speaker 2: Persinskim and his seat and he likes to follow all
- 22:19Speaker 2: of that.
- 22:19Speaker 1: So what is the perception of that club. It's not great.
- 22:25Speaker 8: There's a massive protest scheduled for tomorrow's Chelsea Manchester United
- 22:29Speaker 8: game by Chelsea's fans, and you know, the reason being
- 22:33Speaker 8: is Chelsea fans were sort of spoiled. They had a
- 22:35Speaker 8: Russian Oligark as an owner from the early two thousands
- 22:38Speaker 8: till you know, whenever it was that we decided Oligark's
- 22:41Speaker 8: Russian oligark sh shouldn't own things in other parts of
- 22:44Speaker 8: the world. So just a couple of years ago, and
- 22:46Speaker 8: he was an owner who didn't care. He just spent, spent, spent,
- 22:49Speaker 8: and you know, was just all about trying to win.
- 22:51Speaker 8: Won five Premier League titles, won a couple of Champions
- 22:53Speaker 8: League's titles, so you know, he just would fire coaches
- 22:56Speaker 8: left and right, like it was always just action, you know.
- 22:58Speaker 8: And then this group came in and they were a
- 23:00Speaker 8: little bit more asset private equity, venture capitalist Todd Bowley,
- 23:05Speaker 8: who's part of the Dodgers' ownership. He's been the chairperson.
- 23:08Speaker 1: For a little while.
- 23:10Speaker 8: You know, clear Lake Capital, which is Jose Forliciano's his company.
- 23:14Speaker 8: He's he's you know, he's he's sort of been in
- 23:16Speaker 8: the background. You know, I pay attention to this sort
- 23:19Speaker 8: of stuff, and and I know that the fans don't
- 23:21Speaker 8: really like the club. They don't really like that it's
- 23:23Speaker 8: it's being run like a business.
- 23:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 23:25Speaker 8: They want to be and run like it used to
- 23:27Speaker 8: be run with this crazy Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, where
- 23:32Speaker 8: you just spend money and like just just go win.
- 23:34Speaker 8: Like we don't care. We don't want to hear about
- 23:36Speaker 8: financial responsibility and fiscal responsibility.
- 23:38Speaker 1: We don't care about that stuff.
- 23:40Speaker 4: We don't you know, we don't want to.
- 23:41Speaker 1: We don't want to.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Hear about how you're managing your assets and capitalizing on player.
- 23:46Speaker 1: We don't.
- 23:46Speaker 8: We don't got interested spend and win. That's all we
- 23:49Speaker 8: care about here. So you know, they don't like this group.
- 23:51Speaker 8: You know, this group is run like a like a
- 23:54Speaker 8: venture capital like a private equity company, where they you know,
- 23:56Speaker 8: boost a bunch of assets and sell them at their
- 23:58Speaker 8: highest peak, and and you know they do it for
- 24:00Speaker 8: the bottom line. They treat it like an ATM. Now
- 24:03Speaker 8: the understanding is that that Jose Feliciado is not using
- 24:08Speaker 8: this company necessarily to buy the podres that this is,
- 24:13Speaker 8: you know, a three point nine billion dollar valuation on
- 24:16Speaker 8: the team. It doesn't mean he's buying it for three
- 24:17Speaker 8: point nine billion dollars, but whatever percentage he's getting, he's
- 24:20Speaker 8: buying in at the price of three point nine billion,
- 24:23Speaker 8: which still needs to be sorted through. Maybe there's some
- 24:25Speaker 8: some part of the current ownership that sticks around, or
- 24:28Speaker 8: maybe you know who knows, but it's it's not his,
- 24:32Speaker 8: his clearly capital group that's buying it. It's Jose Feliciano
- 24:37Speaker 8: and his wife Kwanza Jones. That's an important distinction because
- 24:42Speaker 8: if it's just going to be run like a private
- 24:45Speaker 8: equity company like Chelsea, then then maybe Pottery fans end
- 24:48Speaker 8: up feeling like, we're not into this or what's this
- 24:52Speaker 8: all about. Maybe someday they end up building a level
- 24:56Speaker 8: of symmetry with with Chelsea fans or one of the
- 24:58Speaker 8: other Europeans soccer teams that this group owns in France.
- 25:03Speaker 8: You know, they're not too happy with ownership either, but
- 25:06Speaker 8: it sounds like they are separating from that group, that
- 25:09Speaker 8: this is about Feliciano and his wife Kwanza Jones, that
- 25:14Speaker 8: this is them, This isn't the private equity group. And
- 25:18Speaker 8: you know, if that's the way the reporting is, and
- 25:21Speaker 8: Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal, who had this first,
- 25:24Speaker 8: just told me this twenty five minutes ago, then I
- 25:28Speaker 8: think that sounds a little bit more palatable, that there's
- 25:31Speaker 8: a personal connection to these owners who are moving their
- 25:37Speaker 8: philanthropy to San Diego, which is so important here. Now
- 25:40Speaker 8: are they going to move here? Nobody knows that, but
- 25:42Speaker 8: are they going to be part of the community here.
- 25:45Speaker 8: It sounds like those are their intentions. And I think
- 25:48Speaker 8: that's a really good place to start for podre fans
- 25:52Speaker 8: that they want to feel a connection. I don't want
- 25:53Speaker 8: to have some owner who's like where is he? He
- 25:56Speaker 8: lives someplace else, he doesn't live here, He's not connected
- 25:58Speaker 8: to this community. I don't think, after after what the
- 26:02Speaker 8: Sidlers and Ron Fowler have delivered in this market, I
- 26:06Speaker 8: don't think that that would be really appealing for pottery fans. So, uh,
- 26:10Speaker 8: it sounds like early on, you know, for for what
- 26:14Speaker 8: it's worth, just based on this reporting that that you know,
- 26:18Speaker 8: it's on a scale of Peter Sidler or you know,
- 26:22Speaker 8: just completely sort of soulless private equity. It sounds like
- 26:26Speaker 8: it's much closer to the Peter Sidler side than it
- 26:29Speaker 8: is the other.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You keep mentioning his wife. Do we know anything more
- 26:34Speaker 3: about her? Or is the cell with her? Is the
- 26:37Speaker 3: philanthropy that they plan on bringing to San Diego.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And the second part.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Of the question is was this them outbidding or was
- 26:45Speaker 3: this a decision that the previous owners of the Padres
- 26:49Speaker 3: made because they felt like it was in the best
- 26:51Speaker 3: interest of the Padres organization and also the city of
- 26:54Speaker 3: San Diego.
- 26:56Speaker 8: I we just just asked the same question myself and
- 26:59Speaker 8: and you know, I think we all would probably believe
- 27:02Speaker 8: that this is just about the highest price, right. This
- 27:04Speaker 8: is about three point nine billion dollars. And you know,
- 27:07Speaker 8: part of this maybe if it was really really close,
- 27:09Speaker 8: or maybe if they were two bids there at three
- 27:11Speaker 8: point nine you would say, hey, listen, we have an
- 27:13Speaker 8: opportunity here, you know, to to pick somebody you know
- 27:20Speaker 8: who's going to be dialed in the community. You know,
- 27:22Speaker 8: maybe there were some things there that would put this
- 27:25Speaker 8: over the top if it were closed, But it sounds
- 27:26Speaker 8: like it just came down a three point nine billion
- 27:28Speaker 8: was the most money spent. Now, for the first question,
- 27:32Speaker 8: about Kwanza Jones. Not a name frankly that I knew
- 27:35Speaker 8: much of when I woke up today. She is an artist,
- 27:40Speaker 8: a philanthropist, runs her own business.
- 27:43Speaker 1: There's lots of.
- 27:44Speaker 8: Things I'm not I don't know her music, so you'll
- 27:48Speaker 8: have to forgive me. I'm sure people in San Diego will.
- 27:51Speaker 8: We'll be learning a lot about her music today. But
- 27:53Speaker 8: you know, it sounds like she is carved out her
- 27:55Speaker 8: you know, certainly her own name, her own career, her
- 27:59Speaker 8: own success. You know, she does a lot of philanthropy herself.
- 28:04Speaker 8: And it sounds like they're going to be again what
- 28:08Speaker 8: Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal said that they're
- 28:10Speaker 8: going to be pretty equal in all of this. You
- 28:12Speaker 8: know that it is going to be them. It is
- 28:14Speaker 8: going to be Jose Feliciano Junior and Kwanzi Joe. Now,
- 28:18Speaker 8: only one can be the chairperson obviously that's for major
- 28:21Speaker 8: League Baseball roles, and that will be Feliciano, so he
- 28:24Speaker 8: will be the one sitting at the table. But it
- 28:27Speaker 8: sounds like like what we would expect is for the
- 28:29Speaker 8: two of them to be really involved in the operations
- 28:33Speaker 8: of the club, both baseball business and philanthropic.
- 28:39Speaker 1: One more on this front.
- 28:41Speaker 2: What was the perception of Joe Lacub and you know
- 28:44Speaker 2: what he's been able to do.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I know you mentioned it.
- 28:47Speaker 2: If you had to pick, would you say he was
- 28:50Speaker 2: the fan favorite based on the success that he's had
- 28:54Speaker 2: with the Warriors franchise and the familiarity factor for people
- 28:58Speaker 2: in California.
- 28:59Speaker 8: Probably, I mean, I think just because of the familiarity, right,
- 29:02Speaker 8: because it's easy to sit and say, you know, Scott
- 29:06Speaker 8: like listen, like he's he's won four NBA titles and
- 29:09Speaker 8: we all, you know, even we're still watching Steph Curry
- 29:11Speaker 8: and Draymond Green do their things. And yeah, I think
- 29:14Speaker 8: there's been some you know, some good healthy conversation about well,
- 29:18Speaker 8: how much of it is la like Up. But Lakeup's
- 29:20Speaker 8: success speaks for itself.
- 29:21Speaker 7: You know.
- 29:21Speaker 8: We had Dave Fleming, the Voice of the Giants on recently,
- 29:25Speaker 8: and you know, Dave is a Bay Area guy, and
- 29:27Speaker 8: we asked him if the Potteries end up with Joe
- 29:29Speaker 8: Lacup as their owners, it's a good thing. He said, yeah,
- 29:31Speaker 8: it'd be a great thing because look at look at
- 29:33Speaker 8: how the ownership valuation of the Warriors the skyrocket, and
- 29:38Speaker 8: they're ahead of everybody They're ahead of my next the other,
- 29:40Speaker 8: ahead of everybody in the NBA. So it's an incredible
- 29:43Speaker 8: success story. Now does he deserve all the credit for that?
- 29:46Speaker 8: Or you know, did they get Steph Curry going and
- 29:49Speaker 8: Steve Kerr and Draymond Green?
- 29:50Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:50Speaker 8: So whatever, you know, he gets a ton of the credits.
- 29:53Speaker 8: So I think people probably were most familiar with that.
- 29:55Speaker 8: There was a story in Forbes not too long ago
- 29:58Speaker 8: that Joe Lacup might move it, and that resonated for
- 30:02Speaker 8: a little while around here that there was some you know,
- 30:04Speaker 8: some apprehension maybe Joe Lacup just wanted to move it
- 30:06Speaker 8: to the Bay Area. I don't think that was really
- 30:09Speaker 8: going to happen, but he he did pick up a
- 30:11Speaker 8: little bit of that stink, not enough that that I
- 30:14Speaker 8: think people would have would have not been happy with
- 30:17Speaker 8: it today, But yeah, I think he was probably the
- 30:20Speaker 8: most familiar candidate. And people also like this other name,
- 30:23Speaker 8: Dan Friedkin, just because he was born in San Diego
- 30:26Speaker 8: and had some roots here, so that matters, you know,
- 30:29Speaker 8: because you wanted somebody who would be connected to the community.
- 30:32Speaker 8: Feliciano did you know, spend a lot of time in
- 30:34Speaker 8: his life. He was Puerto Rican born, but he did
- 30:36Speaker 8: grow up in southern California, so understands you know, it's
- 30:40Speaker 8: it's not going to be Southern California's different than it
- 30:44Speaker 8: is a lot different than London, right, So you know,
- 30:46Speaker 8: if you're just dealing with some guy who only understands
- 30:48Speaker 8: business in London, this is a different place. So I
- 30:51Speaker 8: think it's good that that Jose Feliciano and his wife
- 30:54Speaker 8: have that understanding. So but yeah, to answer your question
- 30:57Speaker 8: in the most long winded way possible, I do think
- 30:59Speaker 8: the people probably like the idea of Lake Up just
- 31:04Speaker 8: because we're sort of flying blind here and that's the
- 31:06Speaker 8: name that most people knew.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Padre's question for you, I don't know if you
- 31:12Speaker 3: saw these rumors, if there's any legs to these rumors,
- 31:15Speaker 3: and you cover the team, was there any talks to
- 31:18Speaker 3: Fernando that he's playing second base during spring training?
- 31:21Speaker 4: Because the rumors I saw was.
- 31:23Speaker 3: They were potentially showcasing him to potentially move his contract.
- 31:27Speaker 3: And does that change with a new ownership group coming in.
- 31:32Speaker 8: I don't think so. I mean, the rumors about showcasing
- 31:35Speaker 8: him really kind of came out of no place.
- 31:37Speaker 1: You know.
- 31:37Speaker 8: I think that Fernando does a lot of things. I think,
- 31:40Speaker 8: you know, there now there's a ton of video that
- 31:44Speaker 8: has popped up of Fernando taking ground balls at shortstop.
- 31:48Speaker 8: He still does that on a regular basis. You know,
- 31:50Speaker 8: he still does take a lot of ground balls. And
- 31:53Speaker 8: you know, the idea, according to craigs Dam and the
- 31:55Speaker 8: manager and even Fernando is yeah, this was an idea
- 31:58Speaker 8: that was kicked around a little bit in the off season.
- 32:00Speaker 8: I don't think it has anything to do with showcasing him.
- 32:03Speaker 8: I don't, you know, I think it's it's now. I
- 32:07Speaker 8: do think maybe there's more to it than well, we
- 32:11Speaker 8: just were giving Xander Bogart's a day off, and we
- 32:13Speaker 8: wanted to move Jay Cronerworth, so let's have Fernando play
- 32:17Speaker 8: a position that he's really never played in the big
- 32:19Speaker 8: leagues before. I do think that there might be a
- 32:22Speaker 8: little something to the idea that that you know, Fernando's
- 32:25Speaker 8: not been off to a great start, you know, still
- 32:27Speaker 8: doesn't have a home run as we're here on April seventeenth,
- 32:30Speaker 8: and maybe they were trying to to you know, stimulate
- 32:33Speaker 8: him mentally in some capacity. And you know, he had
- 32:36Speaker 8: five hits in the two games that he played so
- 32:39Speaker 8: up until that point, he hadn't had a ton of
- 32:41Speaker 8: offensive success, So maybe they were trying something just to
- 32:45Speaker 8: you know, move him around a little bit and you know,
- 32:48Speaker 8: challenge him in a way that he had to focus
- 32:50Speaker 8: there and not focus so much on what he was
- 32:52Speaker 8: doing in the batter's box. But I don't think it's
- 32:54Speaker 8: about showcasing so that on an MLB network didn't really
- 32:58Speaker 8: understand it. I don't think most people around here put
- 33:01Speaker 8: a ton of stock into it. But you know, as
- 33:04Speaker 8: as and now with a new owner, we don't even know.
- 33:07Speaker 8: It's generally been believed that the Potters are going to
- 33:09Speaker 8: have to take down this payroll in some capacity. It's
- 33:12Speaker 8: it's sort of been put by Ken and by others
- 33:15Speaker 8: that they're going to have to do that. Maybe this
- 33:18Speaker 8: owner doesn't necessarily agree with that, so from that, I
- 33:23Speaker 8: don't know. I think that if they were trying to
- 33:25Speaker 8: do that, all bets are off just based on a
- 33:28Speaker 8: new ownership coming through the door in a couple of weeks.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Oh man, if you want to lose your fan base
- 33:33Speaker 2: really quickly, buy the team for a ton of money
- 33:35Speaker 2: and then start gutting your first.
- 33:38Speaker 8: Move like you know, that's not got to work here.
- 33:41Speaker 8: You know that's not going to work, and you can
- 33:42Speaker 8: get back a one Soto level kind of deal. I
- 33:44Speaker 8: don't think that's going to work around these parts. So
- 33:47Speaker 8: that would be a terrible first impression if that's the
- 33:49Speaker 8: way the new owners were going to operate.
- 33:51Speaker 2: I agree, what you do in the beginning really sets
- 33:53Speaker 2: the tone for how people look at you for a
- 33:55Speaker 2: long time. So we'll see what happens, Darren, great insight.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Really appreciate you coming on with us, you know, with
- 34:00Speaker 2: the quick hit last minute here in the news.
- 34:02Speaker 1: We'll see what happens, and of course.
- 34:04Speaker 2: We'll catch you on everything you do Twitter, and then
- 34:07Speaker 2: of course Friar Territory.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Thanks Ben, have a great.
- 34:09Speaker 8: Weekend, guys, appreciate you. Thank you very much.
- 34:11Speaker 2: All Right, So a couple other things just to give
- 34:14Speaker 2: you a glimpse of what's going on this weekend. Actually
- 34:18Speaker 2: let's start here since this could affect the way that
- 34:21Speaker 2: you look the rest of the series. Here with the
- 34:24Speaker 2: Mets and the Cubs, they're just starting up now. And
- 34:27Speaker 2: also I heard the winds blown out like crazy, so
- 34:29Speaker 2: there could be a lot.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Of homers today.
- 34:31Speaker 2: A couple of injury updates, though I don't even remember
- 34:35Speaker 2: if we mentioned this with Ken, so I'll mention it again.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Jorge Polanco is going through multiple injury issues now, so
- 34:43Speaker 2: he's getting imaging right wrist soreness on top of the
- 34:46Speaker 2: achilles versitis. For the new met who signed a two
- 34:50Speaker 2: year forty he's going through it right now.
- 34:53Speaker 1: He's had an injury history.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I mean, this is a player who's definitely dealt with
- 34:58Speaker 2: a lot, a lot, a lot, so he is dealing
- 35:00Speaker 2: with more now. And you know, the news gets tougher.
- 35:04Speaker 2: In that same series, the Cubs keep losing arms. We
- 35:08Speaker 2: talked about this yesterday with not just the starters, but
- 35:11Speaker 2: the bullpen arms going down, Film Aton and Hunter Harvey.
- 35:14Speaker 2: We just got this news that Danny Poalentia is going
- 35:16Speaker 2: on the shelf. They're a big fireballer, A strained oblique,
- 35:21Speaker 2: strained left oblique for him.
- 35:23Speaker 1: That's a tough blow crats for a Cubs.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Team that I would say, weakness wise, doesn't have a
- 35:29Speaker 2: ton of swing and miss firepower in their bullpen, especially
- 35:34Speaker 2: now with all these guys out and Porter Hodge, you
- 35:36Speaker 2: know they lost for the year. I mean the big
- 35:39Speaker 2: like swing and miss arms are just either out for
- 35:43Speaker 2: the year.
- 35:43Speaker 6: Or out for a while, and I mean, I guess,
- 35:47Speaker 6: I guess you would say, I guess it's glass half
- 35:50Speaker 6: four or half empty. Chicago can be a place that
- 35:53Speaker 6: you just need contact pictures. You don't necessarily need strikeouts.
- 35:57Speaker 6: So but the wind's blowing out and you have contact guys,
- 36:02Speaker 6: then rig League turns into a slam fest. So Palencia
- 36:06Speaker 6: being hurt to me, I thought, I honestly thought, until
- 36:09Speaker 6: Polencia came on the scene part way through last year,
- 36:13Speaker 6: is like dominant, dominant. I thought Porter Hodge was going
- 36:16Speaker 6: to be the guy. I mean, this dude was coming
- 36:18Speaker 6: in just throwing ridiculous bowling ball cutters up there that
- 36:22Speaker 6: were like nobody was touching. And now you lose both
- 36:26Speaker 6: those guys for any any amount of time. Very few
- 36:31Speaker 6: bullpens can sustain that, you know, besides the Padres, Padres
- 36:35Speaker 6: could probably lose two high end upper echelon arms and
- 36:40Speaker 6: still be able to sustain it. But even then, like
- 36:43Speaker 6: it just changes how your team is going to look
- 36:45Speaker 6: in For the Cubs, I talked about it the other day.
- 36:48Speaker 6: With the Padres bullpen, the Cubs now lose two guys
- 36:52Speaker 6: at the end of their at the end of the game,
- 36:54Speaker 6: somebody has to step up for those big innings.
- 36:57Speaker 5: But also.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Who in their roation is going to give them six
- 37:02Speaker 6: or seven innings every other time through the rotation? Like,
- 37:06Speaker 6: to me, is tyn gonna be able to step up?
- 37:09Speaker 6: Is this what they got in Edward Cabrera? Are they even?
- 37:13Speaker 6: Is Craig Counsel even gonna be allowed to let those
- 37:16Speaker 6: guys go that long?
- 37:18Speaker 1: You know?
- 37:18Speaker 6: I think to me, if somebody's gonna give you some length,
- 37:20Speaker 6: it would be Ti on Showta. Maybe maybe he regains
- 37:25Speaker 6: his Rookie of the Year or his rookie year status
- 37:28Speaker 6: where he was going complete game. Maybe he gives you innings,
- 37:31Speaker 6: but you need somebody to give you innings to mitigate
- 37:34Speaker 6: the loss of two big bullpen pieces, no matter how
- 37:38Speaker 6: good their bullpen is or isn't.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I heard you guys, what was it
- 37:45Speaker 3: yesterday or the day before with Todd Father, You guys
- 37:48Speaker 3: were talking about Lucas Giolito and a fit, And I
- 37:52Speaker 3: feel like it's even more of a fit now because
- 37:54Speaker 3: you do need some more depth than your rotation, which
- 37:57Speaker 3: could move a guy like a Sod into the bullpen
- 37:59Speaker 3: and kind of be a more of a long relief guy.
- 38:02Speaker 3: When some of these starters don't go deep into the game.
- 38:05Speaker 3: But also to Cratz's point too, if there's ever a
- 38:08Speaker 3: time in the year, and I know you only play
- 38:09Speaker 3: half your games at home and the wind is blowing
- 38:12Speaker 3: out today, but historically and Wrigley Field, early on in
- 38:15Speaker 3: the season, you can get away with less swing and
- 38:18Speaker 3: miss and a little bit more contact because that win
- 38:21Speaker 3: acts as like a tenth defender out there.
- 38:23Speaker 4: But at some.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Point it's just too much to overcome. And it's just
- 38:27Speaker 3: like it feels like and I think we talked about
- 38:30Speaker 3: this last time a Zonkratzeat's you know, sometimes the difficulty
- 38:33Speaker 3: early in the year is when you go from these
- 38:35Speaker 3: warm places like Florida and Arizona and then you get
- 38:38Speaker 3: into a cold climate like Chicago, and then you go
- 38:40Speaker 3: on the road and you come back. It's just it's
- 38:43Speaker 3: a very difficult thing that an athlete has to deal with,
- 38:45Speaker 3: you know, going from cold to warm back to cold,
- 38:48Speaker 3: and sometimes the body just can't handle it.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Good analysis and one more game.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I just wanted to throw out there, a weekend set
- 38:57Speaker 2: that I think will be good. Rangers Miners nine and
- 39:00Speaker 2: forty Eastern Tonight, you've got the grom matching up with
- 39:03Speaker 2: Logan Gilbert. That's a good little opener there to start
- 39:08Speaker 2: the series.
- 39:09Speaker 1: You know, good little first gamer.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Also Mariners coming off being swept by the Padres, including
- 39:15Speaker 2: that tough loss for them where the Padres blitzed them
- 39:18Speaker 2: in the ninth we talked about the other day, and
- 39:20Speaker 2: then again Padres got the job done last night against Sattle.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Will see how they bounced back. All right, home run bets,
- 39:26Speaker 2: no sweat home run tokens. That could be your answer
- 39:29Speaker 2: to get your stake back in bonus bets.
- 39:32Speaker 1: You don't have to worry if your bet didn't clear
- 39:34Speaker 1: the fences.
- 39:34Speaker 2: You activate that token when you bet on any player
- 39:36Speaker 2: to hit a home run in any MLB game. If
- 39:38Speaker 2: that player does not go yard, you get your stake
- 39:40Speaker 2: back in bonus bets. Keep the action in scoring position
- 39:44Speaker 2: with bet MGM. The King of the Big Swing gambling
- 39:46Speaker 2: problem more concern. There's help call one eight hundred gambler. Hey,
- 40:02Speaker 2: let's slap and this is sad news to pass along
- 40:05Speaker 2: that broke during our show. Garrett Anderson, who is really
- 40:09Speaker 2: an angel's legend for all. We talked about Trout earlier
- 40:13Speaker 2: in the show, the all time leader in games, Hits, Runs, RBIs,
- 40:16Speaker 2: many more categories.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Garrett Anderson staple.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Out in Anaheim, super well respected, great dude, kind soul
- 40:26Speaker 2: passes away at the age of fifty three. Awful and
- 40:30Speaker 2: you know when you say that, you're like, what the
- 40:31Speaker 2: heck happened? The only thing I've seen so far John
- 40:34Speaker 2: Hayman said, heart attack is suspected, so something medically just terrible, terrible.
- 40:38Speaker 1: So we're thinking about.
- 40:40Speaker 2: The family, anyone that's known him and friends with him,
- 40:43Speaker 2: Angels organization, Mike Trapp just put something out on socials,
- 40:47Speaker 2: so it's very, very difficult to learn the news just
- 40:50Speaker 2: now during the show, KP. Did you run into him
- 40:52Speaker 2: at all when you were with the Angels.
- 40:54Speaker 4: Yeah, he was around.
- 40:55Speaker 3: He did some TV stuff for the team, But I
- 40:59Speaker 3: mean I grew up in some California. I was more
- 41:00Speaker 3: of a Dodger fan, but obviously the Angels were somewhat
- 41:04Speaker 3: popular at that time too, during their World Series runs,
- 41:07Speaker 3: and I just remember what a perfect guy to talk about,
- 41:10Speaker 3: you know, slowing the game down and looking like things
- 41:13Speaker 3: came easy to him, and breathing and not gripping the
- 41:15Speaker 3: bat tight because he had a sweet left handed swing
- 41:19Speaker 3: and he was he was a fun to He was
- 41:21Speaker 3: fun to watch, and you know, I would imagine, you know,
- 41:24Speaker 3: Mike was pretty close with him because you know, he's
- 41:27Speaker 3: obviously Angels royalty and he was around a ton. I
- 41:31Speaker 3: got a chance to interact with him very little during
- 41:34Speaker 3: my time there, but he was a big part of
- 41:36Speaker 3: the Angels family doing some TV and then also just
- 41:39Speaker 3: kind of being an ambassador for the Angels.
- 41:41Speaker 6: I was trying to see if it was Bobby Wilson
- 41:43Speaker 6: that said it. I think Bobby played with him, but anyway,
- 41:47Speaker 6: whatever whoever it was, it was one of Garrett Anderson's teammates,
- 41:51Speaker 6: and he goes for all. He said, I used to
- 41:54Speaker 6: just ste when I'm on deck taking practice, swing practice swing,
- 41:58Speaker 6: and he goes. One day I looked up up in
- 42:00Speaker 6: Garrett Anderson is kneeling on a knee with his bat
- 42:05Speaker 6: resting on the leg that's up, and they were like.
- 42:08Speaker 5: What are you doing.
- 42:09Speaker 6: He's like just getting ready to go hit and his
- 42:13Speaker 6: swing looked like there wasn't much effort in it, but
- 42:18Speaker 6: the results were an absolute laser show. I mean, some
- 42:21Speaker 6: of the years you need to He's a guy that
- 42:23Speaker 6: you need a baseball reference, especially on a day when
- 42:26Speaker 6: you know his family's morning is lost like pay some
- 42:30Speaker 6: pay some tribute to a sweet, swinging left handed hitter
- 42:34Speaker 6: that absolutely raked and probably was one of the most
- 42:38Speaker 6: more underrated players during that time.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Angels won a World Series in two thousand and two.
- 42:44Speaker 2: He had what ended up being the winning hit, the
- 42:46Speaker 2: difference maker in the final game. There Garrett Anderson gone
- 42:51Speaker 2: way too soon, fifty three years old. They're gonna wear
- 42:53Speaker 2: a pats. They already announced that for the rest of
- 42:55Speaker 2: the year. It just tough, especially when you learn to
- 42:59Speaker 2: someone that's passing away at that age.
- 43:03Speaker 1: That's it for us here on FT. You got a
- 43:06Speaker 1: few extra.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Minutes back, so go watch some Garrett Anderson clips for
- 43:11Speaker 2: those few extra minutes that we'd usually fill for you,
- 43:13Speaker 2: and then we'll be back with you on Monday. The
- 43:16Speaker 2: usual let's do crawts hats, get a smile on the
- 43:19Speaker 2: way out.
- 43:19Speaker 1: What do you got?
- 43:21Speaker 6: I mean the Braves one of Garrett Anderson's teams that
- 43:26Speaker 6: people didn't realize he played for.
- 43:28Speaker 1: So yep, good call.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Enjoy the weekend everyone, We'll see you Monday.
