- 0:32Speaker 1: fight throughout the month. And right now we have Nicole
- 0:35Speaker 1: on the phone. Good morning, Nicole, Thank you so much
- 0:37Speaker 1: for sharing your story.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Absolutely welcome.
- 0:40Speaker 2: So Nicole, take us back. You missed a mammogram. You probably,
- 0:44Speaker 2: like all of us, new I got to get in there.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But you know what, time sometimes just slips away, and
- 0:49Speaker 2: what we think is maybe a few months ends up
- 0:51Speaker 2: being a year sometimes even more so. Tell us about
- 0:54Speaker 2: your journey.
- 0:55Speaker 3: So I went into my obgyn in I think it
- 0:59Speaker 3: was this year, just for a check up, and she
- 1:03Speaker 3: reminded me that I was overdue for my mammogram, and
- 1:06Speaker 3: because there's no history in my family, I kind of
- 1:09Speaker 3: have to be honest, I blow them off a little bit.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I was six months late, but she encouraged me to
- 1:14Speaker 3: make an appointment right away, which I did, and Assenta
- 1:17Speaker 3: got me in right away, and that was the start
- 1:18Speaker 3: of my diagnosis.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Gosh, so you go in and you're probably like most
- 1:23Speaker 2: of us, it's like, yes, I have to go in here,
- 1:25Speaker 2: but really you don't think, especially with no family history,
- 1:27Speaker 2: that there would be anything wrong. What happened that day?
- 1:31Speaker 3: So I went in for the mammogram. I think it
- 1:32Speaker 3: was only a week and a half later that I
- 1:34Speaker 3: got in, And it was only a few days of
- 1:37Speaker 3: Sena had let me know on my chart that I
- 1:40Speaker 3: needed to come in for a second mammogram. I've never
- 1:43Speaker 3: had to do that.
- 1:44Speaker 2: What's going through your mind at that moment when they
- 1:45Speaker 2: say you have to go in for a second mammogram.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Everything, of course, because it's a shock, and it's like, well,
- 1:51Speaker 3: well that's weird. And I think it's normal for everyone
- 1:54Speaker 3: to like think the worst right away, of course, But
- 1:57Speaker 3: of course my husband's like, it's fine, my friends, it's fine.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It happens all the time. So I just went in
- 2:02Speaker 3: there with like, okay, it could be nothing.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And what happened.
- 2:06Speaker 3: What they did is they scheduled a second mammogram and
- 2:08Speaker 3: then an ultrasound immediately after, and of course the technician said,
- 2:12Speaker 3: most likely we won't see anything more. You probably won't
- 2:15Speaker 3: need the ultrasound. But it was shortly after the tech
- 2:19Speaker 3: read the results, I was in another room for an
- 2:22Speaker 3: ultrasound and that's when they started to see something they
- 2:28Speaker 3: didn't like.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So what did you end up getting diagnosed with?
- 2:31Speaker 3: So my diagnosis, which happened quite quickly because they did
- 2:34Speaker 3: a biopsy shortly after that, is triple negative breast cancer.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I call it the Robin Roberts cancer, and it's an
- 2:42Speaker 3: early stage but it's a very aggressive, so they call
- 2:45Speaker 3: it Grade three, so that means it's small but aggressive.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Well, Nicole, you're still so young, you're fifty two years old,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and of course you're getting this information trying to process.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But isn't it amazing how you walk into asensia and
- 2:59Speaker 2: you kind of feel like a stranger. You're just going
- 3:00Speaker 2: in for a mammogram and I and now you're probably
- 3:03Speaker 2: thinking their second family.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I love them so much. They're so
- 3:06Speaker 3: helpful and caring.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Oh I love to hear that because that's the story
- 3:10Speaker 2: we hear time and time again, and the compassion that
- 3:13Speaker 2: they offer you, because those moments can get pretty dark
- 3:17Speaker 2: and lonely when you're going through the fight.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Absolutely, and one thing I've learned is not to blame
- 3:21Speaker 3: myself when I'm having a low moment, whether it's physically
- 3:24Speaker 3: or mentally, because I think we tend to do that,
- 3:26Speaker 3: like I don't feel good, Oh what did I do
- 3:28Speaker 3: to get sick?
- 3:29Speaker 1: You know?
- 3:30Speaker 3: So I've really reached out in the last month or
- 3:33Speaker 3: so and it's made all the difference. Whether it's through
- 3:36Speaker 3: a sena or a Facebook group, support therapy, my counselor
- 3:41Speaker 3: it's made all the difference for that emotional support.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Not only am I thankful that you're sharing your story,
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm just so proud of you for being so candid
- 3:49Speaker 2: about it, because those are the real moments. I mean,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you hear so many great stories like yes, I'm fighting cancer,
- 3:54Speaker 2: I have a great support system, but the real is
- 3:58Speaker 2: there are some really hard days and I'm just glad
- 4:01Speaker 2: that you're being so open about that. And I know
- 4:02Speaker 2: there's a lot of people listening right now, a few
- 4:05Speaker 2: probably going, oh, man, I better go get my mammogram.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And that is really what this is all about, is
- 4:10Speaker 2: creating that awareness for everybody, just to make sure you
- 4:13Speaker 2: stay up to date on those appointments.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I am just so thankful for my obgyn to really push,
- 4:19Speaker 3: you know, don't wait your six months overdue. That's too long.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And I honestly, because I didn't have a history, I
- 4:25Speaker 3: didn't know it was every year after a certain age
- 4:28Speaker 3: that you need to get a mamma, grandma. I thought
- 4:29Speaker 3: it was, you know, three to five years to be
- 4:31Speaker 3: all right.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Well, it feels like things are always changing. So I'm
- 4:34Speaker 2: glad that not only you had a great obgyn, but
- 4:36Speaker 2: you were able to go over to Assensha and they
- 4:38Speaker 2: were able to handle it. I just can't thank you
- 4:40Speaker 2: enough for sharing the story with us. Thank you so much, Nicole,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and we're thinking of you. You keep fighting and I
- 4:46Speaker 2: can't wait to hear your progress here in a few months.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Thank you for having me
