- Canon Stogner: Welcome back to another episode of the Saturday Slate Show. Andrew, we're coming off a massive episode where we had Jordan Kay from the state newspaper. And this show may be even bigger. great weekend of football. it was honestly too great because I was Andrew Wright: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: just a sack of flesh all day yesterday. Just nothing positive going from me. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So, yeah, we're gonna talk about some of the games this past weekend. we are going to do our re-rankings of our top twelve college ball playoff halfway through the season, through six games. got a couple things I gotta address myself from our last episode. made a mathematical error. Pretty embarrassing on my part. we do have a voicemail, and Andrew, I think it's tailored specifically to you. So yeah, and then of course, you know what we're gonna do? We're gonna dive into a little bit of the arch arch manning. and you know, we'll get into that later. So let's go ahead and I'm gonna go ahead and address last week call apparently caught some flack for it. so we were talking about the QBR and how bad Dylan Reola was last week, which bounced back game form last night and somewhat. so we were talking about the QBR and When I was looking up like the average QBR for a quarterback, I was trying to make a point of how bad Dylan Rayola was. And we were making I felt like it was a pretty good point. And then when I did the math, I did it wrong. because if you look it up, the average passer rating for a starting QBs typically hovers between a hundred and thirty and a hundred and thirty-eight over the course of a season. So when I saw the course of a season, I thought, okay, well, season's twelve games, let me divide that number by twelve. And the number ended up being like eleven or twelve something. So which is horrible. Horrible. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: And I actually didn't make Dylan Rayo look that bad. but yeah, I did that bad and I did the math wrong and bad. And that was what the average comes out for 130 is what he totals like more than that and less than that in a game, and that's what it gets usually between 130, 138. So I do apologize for that. which honestly defends our point. The quarterback average for a QB rating over the course of a season is a hundred and thirty, one hundred and thirty eight. And he had a like what, two point four or something? Andrew Wright: Two point two point four, yeah. Canon Stogner: So yeah, horrible, horrible, horrible. But one week does not determine a season. Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: so yeah. so yeah, I do apologize for that. but Andrew, let's go ahead and play this voicemail. Now, this voicemail was left on Wednesday night. we actually recorded the episode with Jordan on Wednesday morning. so this voicemail didn't get posted on the last episode and it kinda Taylor's tours last Sunday because Andrew is a Commanders fan. so yeah, let's go ahead and play the The episode from Monday night we were talking about what, South Carolina? Andrew Wright: yeah, we've been right after the forty game, so yeah. Canon Stogner: All right. a lot to unpack from that. first of all, Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: he did throw some shade at you for those who didn't know what he's talking about. Andrew did travel to a game with my family to a Panthers Commanders game because obviously we're a Panthers fan. He's a Commanders fan. and after the Commanders won the game, we were walking outside the stadium and Andrew was high-fiving people and slapping hands with all these Commanders fans. And it was really just a classless. lack of it was a lack of just everything. which it makes a lot of sense coming from Andrew because I don't know if this was the same year. It may have been a few years later, we were sitting in some corporate seats that were given to my dad from you know job or something and they were playing the forty niners. My dad said Please tell Andrew not to wear his commander's gear or anything that is not representing the Panthers. So you could even get away with Black. Doesn't even have to be a Panther shirt. Well, Andrew Wright: Yep. Yep. Canon Stogner: Andrew pulls up t Andrew pulls up to the house. Mind you, the plane of the 49ers, he doesn't come in a commander's gear. So he listened, we thought. Well, here comes Andrew walking towards the front door, and he has on a red hoodie. And it's like, like, Andrew Wright: Yeah. Yeah. Canon Stogner: Some people you can't help and some people just have no class. And it's just a miserable way to live. So yeah, that's the first thing that he's talking about. The second thing he's talking about is Shane Beamer, people calling for his head. Andrew, we were gonna do the biggest winner and the biggest loser of this past weekend. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Well, since we're kinda already talking about it and this is bias and kind of a joke in some way. My biggest winner from the weekend was Shane Beamer. Because Kentucky looks like an absolute powerhouse. Not a powerhouse, but they look elite. elites maybe stretched as well, but they look very good. They beat Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yep. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: some really good teams. Their only loss right now is is to Alabama. Shane goes into Florida, coming off a three game losing streak where everybody's calling for his job. Everybody has every reason to, you know, just turn it in and completely fuck fade the season. He goes into Florida and wears them out. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Wears them out. And now I think I don't I mean, I don't know who's still calling for Beamers Head. And even Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: when we talked to Jordan the other day, I can't remember the last qu I can't remember how I asked the last question, but he pretty much said if they make a bowl game, he'll be the head coach next year. which I firmly stand by. This is the hardest year it it is ever to win in college football. And I think yesterday showed us a great example of that case. so yeah, that's what he's talking about there. And then the last part was the Big Ten SEC. I mean I think yesterday still proved our point that SEC is much deeper. I mean, you have Auburn going into Georgia where they very rarely lose at all, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: especially at home. And then you have Auburn who has lost to Florida, has lost to some other SEC teams that haven't been that great and they go in there and pre I mean beat them. so and then you have Tennessee who lost to Texas and now Texas looks horrible. Tennessee beats Alabama at home, wears them out. Alabama couldn't do anything on offense. so yeah, I mean I think that proves the point that SEC is deeper. so yeah, that kind of answers the phone call. Andrew, any comment to any of that? Andrew Wright: I would just like to for the for my self what is self viewpoint for a viewpoint of me from the outside, the commander celebration, no issues with that. I was well within the right to celebrate with fans. Now for the incident with the red hoodie, that was completely on me. Didn't even realize it. Did have on a Terry McLaurin T jersey underneath the red hoodie. Bad play by me. Shay Beamer, like yeah, definitely don't know who's calling for his head anymore at this point. Kind of a lot of positive momentum momentum building back into the program, even on the bye week. Kind of a lot of good juices flowing back around. Seems like everybody's kind of cohesive and together again on kind of how we want the season to play out. And then I do still think the SEC is a little bit deeper than the Big Ten. just college football as a whole is so deep this season. And I d I do still think just because of what we saw yesterday, like we've seen with the Kentuckys this year with the Auburn upset this year that yeah, the SEC is just still A touch bit deeper that could obviously change if we get into the playoff and we have some more SEC Big Ten matchups to kinda decide that. But yeah, I would still definitely agree. SEC just a touch deeper and a touch better. Canon Stogner: Yeah. I mean I've said this a couple of times, but like I said earlier this year that I I thought like Alabama matched up well against Georgia. I thought South Carolina matched up well against South Carolina, which it kind of showed in the second half. I didn't think it was a great matchup against Mississippi Mississippi State. I thought they matched up really good against Florida. but I think right now it's really proven that. The SEC is all about matchups. I mean, you have two really bad teams between Arkansas and Vanderbilt. And really other than that, it's still up for grabs. Up for grabs who's gonna take that number two seed. I still think Georgia gets it. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: either them or Ole Miss. but if one of them just happens to collapse, I really think the number two spot's up for grabs. And that goes for teams like South Carolina, teams like Oklahoma that has three losses. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Now, Oklahoma, I think, is out of it, but you know, teams like that who have maybe two or three losses, because really anybody can go get it at this point. And I think South Carolina matches up well against Tennessee, and we'll get into that on Thursday. but yeah, I think they match up well against Tennessee. Tennessee obviously has a very good defense, very good defense. but I think South Carolina's defense, they I think they're better than Alabama's defense. Tennessee doesn't really stretch the ball down the field as much as they used to. and South South Carolina's done really well against the run. And obviously I don't McIntyre's not that elite hybrid quarterback that Camario Taylor and Keelan Russell is. So yeah, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I think they match up pretty well against South Carolina and Tennessee and Yeah. So we'll see. We'll kind of get into that. now, Andrew, I obviously we gotta talk about it. There's been some bad quarterback play this year, and especially Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. There has. Canon Stogner: this past weekend from guys who were expected to maybe even be the top draft pick coming up. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: And the first one is obviously Arch Manning at Texas. if I don't know if anybody's ever killed their draft stock as bad as he has outside of like character issues. Obviously, character issues people have Completely ruined their draft stop because of that. But for what he's actually doing on the field and putting on the field Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: is we're enjoying it just because we have a long bet, which Andrew Wright: Right. Yeah. Canon Stogner: is kind of looking good for us now, but we're enjoying it. So it's funny to us, but you I really feel bad for all these guys who really truly believed in him because he just doesn't have it. I mean Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. No, he does not. Canon Stogner: He cannot put a game or a drive together. You'll see a couple times he'll make some good throws. He made a good throw yesterday when they were down. Two scores with like what eight, six or eight minutes left. Andrew Wright: Mm. Yep. Canon Stogner: He threw that ball with the pressure in his face. But man, he is like one for every 20 throws. It's horrible to watch. And he, yes, the stat line's not as bad as what he at how he actually played yesterday. I think he was like 14 for 20. 173 yards. yeah. Andrew Wright: No, yeah. He's fourteen for twenty, yeah, for a hundred and seventy three yards. But that one that one throw was like sixty five. So Canon Stogner: So if you take that one throw away, he's barely over a hundred. He had an interception that was dropped. that was a horrible throw. He threw it into double, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: maybe even triple coverage. They c could have taken the ball down to the two-minute warning. Go if you go down and score a touchdown, you take the lead against Florida. You could have taken the play down to the two-minute warning. He snaps it, fumbles the ball on a very inexcusable fumble. I mean, the guy was clearly there and was gonna sack him. He just doesn't control the ball, which ends up leading to one of the funniest pictures, maybe a college football season. maybe it'll be our thumbnail. but yeah, he's just he like I said a couple weeks ago when they played I think it was probably the Tennessee game, he just has no awareness. Andrew Wright: Yeah, no. Canon Stogner: And Texas Texas won the Tennessee game the defense did. and they the offense played pretty well in the second half against O Ohio State, but the defense also won that. And also you got to remember Iowa State's kicker missed the field goal to take to make it a two-score game. so it's more of a Ohio State loss and it was a Texas win. but yeah, their next four games are against ranked teams. Teams that are playing much better than them right now. You got Ole Miss, you got LSU, you got Missouri, and then Alabama. Andrew Wright: Mississippi State's in Mississippi State's in there somewhere. Canon Stogner: Mississippi State. So I don't I really don't know where they're gonna get a win out of the next four games. And with him playing the way he is. Which no confidence. And then with Colin Simmons probably being out for a year, it looked like it looked like a torn ACO. I haven't seen any announcement. and they I don't college teams don't really announce stuff like that. with Colin Simmons out, you could tell the defense took a massive drop yesterday whenever Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: he got hurt. just the game plan completely shifts when he's out of the game. So you kind of feel for that that you really don't know where their production is gonna come from on the defensive side or like the threat. Of having that edge rusher. But yeah, other than that, I don't feel sorry for Texas at all. And they're honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he gets benched recent soon if he starts playing. I I do believe he'll start this week or their next game. but they have a five star freshman quarterback, Diabelle, who's sitting right behind him who fans are probably gonna be calling for soon, just like they were when Quinn Ewers is playing. So Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: just to kind of give you an example on how bad. Arch Manning has been this year. If you look at Florida's four SEC games they've played so far, you have Byron Brown through for 270, who's not a throwing quarterback, threw Andrew Wright: Mm. Nope. Canon Stogner: for 270 and three touchdowns, and ran for 18 for 65. So he had a very good game against Florida. Florida's defense. Then you go Trinidad, the best quarterback in the SEC. He throws for 300. Has a touchdown and interception and has seven carries for 44 yards against Florida's defense. He's not really, he doesn't really use his legs as much. He's he can, but he doesn't use them as much as he probably should. All right. Then you got Missouri. Austin Simmons throws for 340 and two touchdowns. So throws the ball over him, averaging 11 yards to throw. Lenora Sellers, who's probably one of the s one of the worst throwing QBs in the SEC, he throws for 280. With four touchdowns and rushes for 14 carries for 20 yards with a touchdown. So we had five total touchdowns against that Florida defense. So all those numbers sound very similar. And then you Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: look at Arch Manning, the number one projected pick at times, the number one projected quarterback off out of the draft. He goes fourteen for twenty, a hundred and seventy-three yards. and if you take away that one big throw, I mean he's thrown for one ten, one hundred. So Awful game for him, awful look. Steve Sarkeesian's probably on the hot seat, honestly. Can't be as bad as you are with that roster. so yeah, things are really gonna get interesting over there. I did not see what's his name? The actor that's always on the sideline. Andrew Wright: Matthew McCallagher. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I did not see McConaughey yesterday. I don't know. I can't remember if they showed him, but just from when I was watching, I did not see him. So yeah, maybe people are starting to give up on Texas, including their biggest idiot fan. but we'll get into that another day. but outside of that, yeah, you have Rocco back who played horrible. in the same game, you've got Bryce Underwood who was benched. Looks Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like Michigan has their new QB one. and then you have Gunnar Stockton, who a of people had thought said that was probably the next best quarterback outside of Trinidad at this point. And he played bad too. He's very Has very poor, poor turnovers. Just a couple of those interceptions he threw yesterday were horrible. The fumble was very similar to Arch. I mean, the guy's right there in front of you, and you failed to protect the ball in a big moment. If you go down there, if you hold the ball, you're probably gonna go down there and score and take the lead against Auburn. And we're not looking at this upset. So very bad quarterback play yesterday. Aaron Fowlow, do you think his job's on the line, Andrew? Andrew Wright: Yeah, I think so. I would have to say just because of kind of the way they've slacked on offense lately and then Tremel Jones comes in there and gets a humongous road win, I would definitely think if it's anything like our Dynasty League, it would be an open competition in QB this week. If it were me. Canon Stogner: Yeah. I mean Tremel Jones, he looked really good. Especially Andrew Wright: Yeah, he did. Canon Stogner: in his first game starting at Florida. I mean at Texas. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: That's a very big game for him. didn't turn the ball over, I don't think at all, right? He didn't turn the ball over at all. Andrew Wright: Done. No. Canon Stogner: He was off to a little bit of a slow start, but once he started to feel it, he was feeling it and he used his legs. Now Filo can run too. And he's probably a better thrower than Tremel Jones. So I I still see him starting, but he's probably one of those guys where he knows he's gonna play like very careful because he knows if he makes one mistake it's probably gonna be Tremail Jones time. which puts it put really puts you in a tough spot 'cause you miss a game because of an injury. Nobody was either any even talking about Tramail Jones and then you get injured and he starts and now he goes and beats Texas in Andrew Wright: It alm it almost to me kind of feels like when Billy Napier was and they had Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway both there. And Graham Mertz got hurt and DJ Lagway had to come in and play and then played well. Now you have kind of the balance between, Hey, do I go back to my guy that started the season? That's my QB one or do I kind of play the hot hand here. So that'd be very kinda interesting for some rough to kind of Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: maneuver and find a good balance for. Canon Stogner: Yeah. so let's kinda get into how yesterday's yesterday's Saturday slate went. A lot of big games yesterday and like I said, I was a sack of flesh, was just watching football all day and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very good football. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: But my only complaint is and it's not anybody's fault, my only complaint is there were a couple of games where Andrew Wright: Things were Canon Stogner: if the starting QB was playing, it would have been a whole lot better. And my main one that I'm talking about is Miss Mississippi State and LSU. LSU Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: absolutely thrashed Mississippi State and Mississippi State's now out of the rankings. which Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I feel I feel very bad for them because they were rolling, you know, they only game they had lost was against Alabama. Tough game, bad matchup for them. but yeah, he doesn't play at all and they get thrashed. So kinda that game was kind of overshadowed by him not playing and them getting beat up on. Then you got Miami and Florida State. I thought that was a very good game. Andrew, what were your thoughts on the Hail Mary? Andrew Wright: it's just such a such a tough play to call. It was kind of very identical to the Fail Mary play with the Seahawks and Packers forever ago. I will say I was much more calm than Jason Wright, who was the much bigger Far State fan than me. He was very upset and he thought the replay review was very poorly handled. So he was very upset by that. But just very just weird play. I s I still don't know to at this moment. I still have no idea who I think caught that football. you put it if you Told me I had to make a decision, I would say Deuce Robinson caught it and then the guy fought for it on the ground. But I thought that was just such a tough play for those officials to call. And then once the call on the field is interception, that was never getting overturned under any scenario. So yeah, really tough way for Florida State to lose that game. And a game that really nobody expected them to compete in. So they did show some kind of fight. They're still playing for their head coach, who's probably on the way out. But yeah, just really, really tough way to end that one. Especially after the what I thought Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: was a pitiful holding call, by the way. I will say I thought that was an awful holding call. The play before. Canon Stogner: Yeah, that's what I was gonna say that as well. I f when you get into those moments at the end of the game, it's kinda like basketball where like you can pretty much play very rough defense and they're not gonna call it. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and so obviously there's a Hail Mary about to be thrown. It's fourth down and what, like fifteen or twenty. They had to throw it. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: very little time left. My biggest issue with that is All this pushing and shoving and tackling goes on in the end zone on Hail Mary's. And you decide to call a holding call. 50 yards away from where the play happens. And it was honestly kind of a late flag thrown to. Andrew Wright: It was. Yep. Canon Stogner: I mean, Florida State was celebrating. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and then you see the flag come out. And so I thought it was a very cheap call. You can't call that. And I really don't think the guy was even fighting to try to get the quarterback. I think he just kind of pulled him down by his horse collar or by his neck a little bit. so yeah, didn't love that call. But I mean, for one, I think Miami is the easiest place to play. It is Andrew Wright: Yeah, it is. Canon Stogner: an in-state rival, a massive rival for those two teams. But I do think that makes Miami better because, you know, they're starting to learn, you know, they the first several weeks they were blowing everybody out. Then they had to go into Clemson, a tough environment. And The game was a lot closer than I think the score was, at least for the first three quarters. so they're back to last two games, they've had some very tough matchups, which I think is good for them because you have to know that you're not gonna blow everybody out. Ohio State and Indiana final score is nineteen fifteen. I was very glad Ohio State won this game. just for the fact that they were winning. And then when Julian Saiyan goes down, that's kind of when everything turned for Ohio Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: State. I mean And for Indiana. And Saiyan didn't play great by any means, but there was Andrew Wright: No. Canon Stogner: a massive difference when he was in the game than when the backup came in. So I'm very glad Ohio State won because if they would have lost, not a lot would have been held against them. I mean, yeah, they would have had two losses, but you go into Indiana and then your quarterback goes out. So it's kinda like how much can you look at it? Because Indiana really couldn't do anything. And Ohio State is still really good. It really blows my mind how they lost to Texas. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: but You know, I've I've said it a bunch of times this year. A lot of these games at twelve o'clock, the road team is heavily favored. Going in or they have an advantage going into the games like that. So, I mean, Ohio State goes into Indiana at twelve and beats them. Florida goes into Texas and beats them. So you can kind of see where I'm coming from when I say that. So yeah, very good game. What were your thoughts on that? Andrew Wright: yeah, I d I didn't think Julian Saiyan or Josh Hoover either one played really well. Saiyan was fifteen of twenty nine, had two picks and two touchdowns, and then Josh Hoover only had a fifty percent completion percentage. He did get up near three hundred yards because it's couple big, like long passing plays. But yeah, didn't think either one of those two played played good at all. They were both really, really shaky at the beginning, and that kind of just progressed until Saiyan got hurt. And yeah, was definitely glad to see Ohio State win that and kind of not have those two losses because of the Saiyan injury. And now They'll be battle tested in these next couple weeks with him being out for a little while and those I think their next couple of games are USC and Oregon. So they'll kinda have some they'll have some tests there. But just overall, two really good defenses. what just a brutal way for Indiana to lose that game. Just I mean, literally by a foot. And I I think most people are probably in agreement that there was plenty of time left for Ohio State to go down the field. It is highly unlikely they were going to, just because of Luke Fehey having to come in and play. But really good game and I think just kinda as of now, I know UCLA's record and they're in first in the Big Ten and everything, but I do think this will be the Big Ten Championship game again. In Indianapolis. Canon Stogner: Yeah, and I kinda feel b I feel bad for UCLA as well because Nico got hurt. and he's probably done for the year. Andrew Wright: Yeah. So like I just it's very yeah, very weird. Canon Stogner: So, yeah, it's just one of those things where quarterback play does kind of haunt you and w how the season plays out. And which Julian Saints gonna be out for a while and they got some big games coming up. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: so that would be interesting to see how they judge that. I had a guy that was talking to me on Thursday night. He was a Florida State fan. He lived in Florida. but don't quote me on this stat because I'm not 100% sure. but you may know just because y'all are more of a Florida State family. he told me that Florida State has not won a road game since 2023. The last road game they won, they weren't even like it wasn't really a road game. It was the ACC championship a couple years ago when Jordan Travis. Andrew Wright: Yeah, that's yeah, that's a that's a fact. Canon Stogner: That's unbelievable. Andrew Wright: Yeah, that's unreal. Canon Stogner: And I kind of feel bad for Mike Norvell because he I mean he's he's caught a lot of slack the last couple years, but his team is actually pretty competitive this year, it feels like. Ash Andrew Wright: They are they are, yeah, they did they have been. Canon Stogner: Ash and Daniels is I think a pretty decent quarterback, at least. so he's not bad. let's jump into Auburn and Georgia. Auburn obviously goes into Georgia and beats the number one team. Byron Brown's absolute superman yesterday. carried Auburn. on offense. he was running all over them. He made some big time throws. I kinda chirped him a little bit before the season started about how his throwing motion is. It is still very hideous. Andrew Wright: Yes, I is still just as bad. Canon Stogner: It's a horrible throw emotion, but I mean, hey, it's working for him. Now, I would say a very big win for Alex Goolish. And that emotional press conference was pretty cool, like seeing his son and stuff on the field. But Georgia did beat themselves. They had awful penalties, which is very uncharacteristic for them. Gunner made some boneheaded plays. they missed a field goal. So as much as you want to credit Auburn, yeah, Georgia did kind of beat. shoot themselves in the foot multiple times. but still, regardless, I mean you wake up Monday morning crowds going to see Auburn one. And, you know, that's a big win for them. Tennessee absolutely thrashed Keelan Russell and Alabama as a whole. it was pretty cool like watching the game, like Kellen Board, like he was he was very positive the whole game and had like a good attitude and was like pretty much just cheering him on. Like you could tell it was kind of that energy like our offense is going to get it going soon. Like Just keep playing defense, keep going out there and holding on to three. And then it kinda I think in the fourth quarter he kind of started to realize like, like this isn't gonna happen. so very big win for Tennessee, which is one of my favorite rivalries in college football, is watching Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: these two teams play. So yeah, massive loss for Alabama. They have to pretty much run the table now. But so do a lot of SEC teams. So somebody's gonna do it. Just a matter of who. Texas Tech absolutely Demolished Arizona State. I I hate Kenny Dillingham, by the way. I don't like him. Not much to say on that game, but I don't like him. Ole Miss Trinidad and Ole Miss's offense was a juggernaut yesterday. Missouri could not stop him. Missouri's offense, who been pretty high on this year with Austin Simmons and Jamal Roberts, or whatever the running back's name is, they were shut down yesterday, held to three points, didn't even score a touchdown. So pretty big, important loss for them. Very big win for Ole Miss. You kind of feel like a lot of people have I don't want to say forgotten, but kinda written off Ole Miss just because their last game was against Florida. Then they had the bye week. so yeah, good to see them bounce back. They still look really good. Utah scrap scraped by Colorado twenty seven, twenty four. Kentucky went into Oklahoma. Oklahoma's defense is still very good. It's it's a shame how bad John Mateo is. It really is. Andrew Wright: Yeah, it is. Canon Stogner: It's a shame. It's a shame how bad he is. but big win for Kentucky. Then LSU shut out Miss Mississippi State 31 0. You got Houston and Oklahoma State, which was a very good game. Oklahoma Andrew Wright: It was. Canon Stogner: State was really just a possession behind the whole game. so they just couldn't catch up. Connor Wagman, the legs on that Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: young man, there was one play where he absolutely ran by everybody. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: He's a dog. Andrew Wright: Yes, he's he's a he's very good. Canon Stogner: He's just very good and the Big twelve is getting interesting. Andrew Wright: The Big Twelve is getting very interesting. Canon Stogner: I mean, there's four, maybe even five teams still with Oklahoma State that are s like up there because you got BYU, you got Texas Tech, you got Oklahoma State, you got Houston, and then you got Utah. So those are five teams that are very good. And I would say probably two or maybe three of those teams are gonna be very upset by the end Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: of the season. but yeah, that kind of leads me into our last game we wanted to talk about, which was BYU in Notre Dame. I'm kinda gonna going to defend Notre Dame and then also harp on them a little bit. I thought defense is really good. I mean, BYU had to pull out all the stops yesterday to score on them, which is good for them. I mean, they won the game. Place was rocking. I didn't think CJ Carr looked great. I thought he made some uncharacteristic throws or like just off timing a little bit. but one thing about Notre Dame is Your schedule is very, very weak. And I wish they would just join a conference because next year when they move to a twenty fourteen playoff, now granted, they may change the ruling for Notre Dame and like how their schedule has to be or you know, whatever the case may be. But Notre Dame they only have one or two tough more tough games. They got Miami and then they got SMU. but other than that, they They really they have to run the table because if they lose another game, they're gonna be out of the rankings and it is because of their schedule because they're not in conference. Any of these other teams, there's gonna be probably at least a team or two that makes the college ball playoff with two, maybe three losses. and it's all because of the scheduling. Notre Dame does not have to wake up every week and go play a gauntlet of the schedule. Like, like we said, all these SEC teams who we thought were at the top all lost yesterday. That's because every week you have to bring your best because every game at this point is the teams the opposing team's Super Bowl. so yeah. Notre Dame I I I can't stand them. I wish they wouldn't even put in the FBS. I wish they'd just go play the FCS. Go beat up on South Dakota State in their conference if you're not gonna play real teams. 'Cause they're trying to schedule these ACC teams who are obviously a step behind in the portal and NIL stuff. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And I think they're trying to use that as like we are playing power for teams, but Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: In reality, you're really not playing great teams other than Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: two or three a year. so yeah, it kinda sucks. but yeah, so that's all for the week recap. Andrew, let's jump into our mid season playoff rank rankings. so give me your four conference winners and then we'll go from there. Andrew Wright: All right. So I will four conference winners. in the ACC, I have Miami. just don't really see anybody being able to pull off something over them. And Othur State played close, but still think they are the the clear Canon Stogner: Is this the one seat or four? Andrew Wright: one, one seed. my two seed, I will go Ohio State to still somehow get out of the big ten. I think just kind of the level of play we've seen from US C and Oregon this year, I think they'll be able to get by and get through those games. And then when Julian Sang comes back, I do believe they'll be able to knock off what I think will be Indiana again. And obviously if Indiana slips up again somewhere in Ohio State gets kind of a lesser opponent in that spot, then even better for them. But I do have them at two. three, I'll take BYU to completely run the table and finish this season undefeated. And kinda I I picked them in the p at the beginning of the season to kind of be above Texas Tech. And they've shown they've not given me any reason to kind of back off of that. So I'll go there at the three and then I'll go Georgia at the four to run the table there and win the SEC. I still think it's gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I still think that Georgia is the best team in college football coming out of last week. I I have Miami as the one because they'll f I think they'll go undefeated. So obviously that kind of gives them priority at number one. But I still think I came away watching that game thinking that Georgia is still the best team in the country. So I still have a lot of faith and belief in them. Canon Stogner: Yeah, so my top four I had Ohio State at one. Like you said, I I I do think they're really good. Just still can't believe they lost to Texas. At number two, I have Miami. just kind of bouncing off what you said. Number three, I have Ole Miss as my SEC champion. Still think they're the best team. You know, they came off the bye week and you kinda mentioned it about Pete Golden getting the defense back and running. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And yesterday didn't give up a touchdown against a very good Missouri offense. So Think they're starting figure things out. So I have Ole Miss at three and then number four I have BYU. Which, like you said, I thought they looked really good last night. but they're still they still have a pretty tough schedule and they have to find ways to win without running those trick plays because you know now the teams are going to be looking for stuff like that. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: so if they w and then they also, I mean, they ran like a fake punt yesterday that Notre Dame couldn't capitalize off of, I don't think, or maybe Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: they scored a field goal. But yeah, so those are my four seeds. At five, I have Georgia. At six, I have Indiana, just based off their they don't really play anybody else the rest of year. number seven, I do have Notre Dame on there. Number eight is Utah. Number nine is Texas Tech. So I have three Big Twelve teams joining. And Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: then at number 10, 11, and 12, I kind of had some fun with this. I had Iowa. Just looking off their schedule, I don't Really see they don't I don't really see another loss. and then I have number eleven, I have UCLA. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: yesterday was a pretty tough game for them against Wisconsin and they defense is really good. I mean, they won the game seventeen seven and their schedule is pretty I think they have USC at the end of the year and maybe Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Ohio State. But they can win one of those games, they'll probably be in. And then number twelve, I have Alabama. Andrew Wright: Okay. So five. We kind of flip-flop SEC teams here. I went Ole Miss at five. I had Indiana at six. We're very similar there. I have Utah at seven. I'm like you again. I have three Big 12 teams. I have Utah seven, Texas Tech eight. Just think whoever is the runner up in the conference championship will get the spot up on the third team. But I do think both those teams do get in. number nine, I have UCLA. Like you said, their defense is just playing really, really good. now without Nico, obviously it'll be a little tough for them to kind of get the offense rolling the same way they had when he was in there, but I do still think they find a way to get in. number ten, I have Tennessee. Just they gave me a lot to believe in. That defense is legit. Deshaun Bishop is an absolute animal in the backfield. And I think he can run them into a CFP berth. I really do. eleven, I had Alabama. I do still think Alabama's really good. I think they have the ability to run the table. And then at twelve I did throw in a G six team. Give me Billy Napier and the fighting dukes of James Madison to get in as a G six team. Canon Stogner: my god, I didn't throw in the G sixteen. Andrew Wright: You do not throw in a G sixteen. Canon Stogner: And I thought about it earlier too. I don't know why I forgot, but my G sixteen was Boise State. Andrew Wright: Okay. That mean you kick Alabama out? Canon Stogner: Yeah. I'll kick Alabama out. Wow, I can't believe Andrew Wright: Okay. All right. Thank you. Canon Stogner: I forgot that. Which I thought it was very weird. I mean, we've been hyping up the SEC the whole time and I only have three teams and they're making it, which now only Andrew Wright: Yeah, it's just Canon Stogner: two. Andrew Wright: it's just a bloodbath. It's just Canon Stogner: But you don't you really don't know. I mean honestly I could see Kentucky sneaking in. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: you still have Texas if they run the table. You still have L SU if they run the table, you still have Tennessee if they run the table. Still so many teams. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. I mean there's a there's a yeah, there's a real world where we end up with like three two loss SEC teams and then like six three loss SEC teams. Canon Stogner: Yeah, so and those three losses could very well be to like top ten, top fifteen teams. So it's it's it's Andrew Wright: Yeah, like it it's crazy. Just the way the season's played out. Canon Stogner: tough. but I will give a lot of credit to Will Stein. I mean, you had all those upsets yesterday and Oklahoma's coming off a big win against Texas, and then you go into Oklahoma and beat them. That is a big time win. Andrew Wright: And and they trailed f they trailed for a lot of that game. I actually I probably spent just as much time watching that last night as I did Notre Dame BYU. Just because like we kind of talked about it in our preview ahead of last week, how crazy it was so Oklahoma was a touchdown favorite against them. And then the game kinda played out like we said it would need to for Oklahoma to win. John Mateo played a really clean game for three quarters and their defense is legit. It always like it will be as long as Brett Venables is there. And then the John Material we discussed in the preseason has gotten too big and can't throw. Shut up in the fourth quarter and Kentucky found a way to get out of there with the win as a touchdown underdog. Yeah, I don't know. It was Canon Stogner: Yeah, I mean, that was probably the s that was probably the second biggest coaching win of the weekend behind Alex Goelish. Andrew Wright: Yeah, I yeah, a hundred percent agree. I think I saw it was Kentucky's first time winning three straight SEC road games since like two thousand and six. So just insane. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I don't I don't know what what's left for Kentucky to do to gain respect. Cause like, you know, they they went into Williams Bryce and beat South Carolina. And then they dropped out of the rankings. And dropped Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Got down seven to nothing. Yeah, and came back and beat South Carolina. Canon Stogner: out of the rankings. So I don't know what else they have to do, but I mean they're starting to get their love now. So and then one thing I did laugh at yesterday was you told me on the last episode that Eli Drankowicz like made a comment like Andrew Wright: About the SEC. Yeah. Canon Stogner: See y'all at 3 30 on the SEC network. And then you go on the SEC network and don't even score a touchdown. Which is just so fitting. Andrew Wright: Yeah, it got passed on the SEC network. Canon Stogner: So fitting for him. There's so many times his mouth gets in his own way. And I really do think he's one of the best coaches in the SEC. So horrible look on him. all right, Andrew, let's get into our biggest winner and biggest loser. I did already say my biggest winner, but I'll pick another one. this could be any coach, any player, or any team. on either the winning side or the losing side, let's go ahead and start with your biggest winner. Andrew Wright: My biggest winner, I'll go with Kalani Sataki at BYU, having that game at home and kind of the reputation they built up for themselves last year, and we saw them play two games against the same team that was a really good team and they got embarrassed twice and ended up costing them their spot in the playoff. And that's kinda that's kind of been like the national outlook. They haven't played anybody since then. They haven't given anybody a reason to kind of think that's not what we were gonna see again. And I thought, quite frankly, for two and a half quarters, I thought they dominated Notre Dame. I thought they came out, I thought they punched them in the mouth and I thought they kinda I don't think Notre Dame was expecting BYU to kind of come out as physical and as fast and as clean and as good as they did. And I think it kind of stunned them and kind of threw them off their game a little bit. And BYU, like I said, I if you follow some of the social media stuff, I kinda said, like, hey, what a big win for them and kinda as far as I'm concerned, until further notice, the Big Twelve runs through Provo. And somebody has got to show they can go in there and beat them. So yeah, I'll take Kalani Sataki as my biggest winner from this week. Canon Stogner: Okay. my biggest winner is Will Stein. I just dove into that, so I'm not gonna get into it any further. But yeah, Will Stein's my biggest winner. Biggest loser. Mind you, this could be any player, any team, or any coach or anything that is associated with the loser of the weekend. Andrew Wright: Uh-huh. I don't think people have to guess too hard about who the biggest loser this week was. Come on down, Arch Manning. Just really just really Texas as a whole. this sea like it's it really feels like you said, we we're enjoying this kind of these last two weeks because it really feels like this season for Texas is playing out the exact way we laid it out before the season. And it feels so good to be right about something thus far. kinda that was such an unpopular opinion, an unpopular take, especially considering the luck that we have, especially myself, with predicting things and kind of saying things that go the complete opposite way. Like they have all the talent in the world. It just we said it in the pre we s we Canon Stogner: So good. They're they're so good. Andrew Wright: said it in the preseason. We said it after the Ohio State game. We don't trust the quarterback. And he still has not given us a reason to yet. And like Yeah, Canon Stogner: He doesn't have it, Andrew. He doesn't have it. He Andrew Wright: like it's like time's ticking. Canon Stogner: Every time I watch him play, I think of for one, all the commentators still just glaze him and hype him up, and they're always showing his parents, which I feel bad for his parents, they're showing him. Because they don't deserve that. but they're always talking about how high of a profile and draft pick he is. He's giving off Zach Wilson vibes so easily for me. You know, but Zach Wilson was better in college. Andrew Wright: Right. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So it's really it's funny to me to watch how bad he is. Andrew Wright: Yeah, like you said, he's just so hot and cold and inconsistent. It's ridiculous. Canon Stogner: I mean, yeah, I can't I can't remember exactly where it is. I think it was late third quarter or early fourth, but they pulled up a stat and it was like he's averaging point eight yards on a throw so far, the like in the game. Andrew Wright: Yeah, it was it was nuts. Canon Stogner: So it's like he's not even stretching the ball downfield, and he's actually not a horrible deep ball thrower. He just he he just Andrew Wright: He's not. He does a really good ball. It's just Canon Stogner: can't put it together. but yes, that was your biggest loser. My biggest loser is going to be Eli Dranquets. I ain't even gotta say no. Andrew Wright: Shout out, shout out Josh Hipel too, by the way. That's a humongous win for Shout out Josh Hypel. Canon Stogner: Yeah, they come to Willie B Saturday though. Andrew Wright: That's right. Yeah, they you're dang right they are. Canon Stogner: so we're gonna see. all right, Andrew, final thing of the podcast. Let's do our review of the spread picks from this weekend. Andrew Wright: Alright, so Mr. Stogner, you were the winner this week on the spread picks. You had a three and two week. you had two underdogs that you picked, just straight up win outright in Florida and Kentucky. And then you had Oklahoma State to cover four and a half, lost by three. So you those were your three wins, two losses. You had Baylor, minus six. They kind of just laid an egg against TCU. And then I told you, this last one, I've told you to stay away from it. Canon Stogner: I didn't know Saga Patule's not playing. Andrew Wright: I didn't know that either. But yeah, Cal just Canon Stogner: That was crazy. Andrew Wright: completely got dog walked by Wake Forest. So yeah, three and two week for you. that puts you at twenty and fifteen on the year. So five games above five hundred, not bad. And then myself, Canon Stogner: Pretty good hit, right? Andrew Wright: I was two and three this week. hit on Washington as an outright underdog. We kinda didn't understand why Purdue was favored against them the way they were. Even without Demon Williams, they kinda still went in there and played a really good football game. And then my other winner was Nebraska plus seven and a half. I thought they would win the game. They didn't, but they still ultimately covered. So I'll take that. And then my three losses, I had Missouri, who I talked about Thursday, thought they were gonna win. I honestly really did. And they showed no fight, no offense, no anything. missed on Duke, minus three and a half. I don't want to get into that. And then I had Notre Dame, minus ten and a half, and yeah, I was completely off on that one as well. So that puts me at nineteen, fifteen and one on the season. Canon Stogner: Okay. Well, I didn't know you took Notre Dame at minus ten and a half. Andrew Wright: I did. Canon Stogner: Okay. all right. Well, thank you guys for tuning in. make sure you like, comment, subscribe. Let's keep building this foundation. Let's keep building building this follow base. on Thursday we'll have our preview show for next week, another big weekend of college football. I will be boots on the ground in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday at three thirty against Tennessee. gonna be a massive weekend. Brother Blair will not be in attendance, father dad will be in attendance, and he does need a ride. So if anybody we gotta figure that out. And he doesn't he he he can drive, he does have his license, but his car will be somebody else will be driving his car to another location. So he will not have it. so yeah, it's gonna be me, dad, Lucas, and Presley, and we're gonna give it all we got. We always bring our best, most games, at least in the a the A grade. Sometimes it Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: might be just a solid A or an A minus. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: but you know what I'm gonna have. It's gonna be the A plus. My dad's gonna have Andrew Wright: That's right. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: his A plus. He's always an A plus. so yeah. And Presley and Lucas giving me their word. They're bringing their A game. So, but I don't need their A game, I need their A plus game. So, Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: yeah. but anyways, thank you guys for tuning in, and we'll see you all Thursday.
