Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: For myself and for our nation.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I wanna thank my predecessor for all he has done
- 0:12Speaker 2: to heal our lands. In this outward and physical ceremony,
- 0:53Speaker 2: we attest once again to the entner and spiritual strength
- 0:59Speaker 2: of our nation. As my high school teacher, Miss Juji
- 1:03Speaker 2: Coleman used to say, we must adjust to changing times
- 1:10Speaker 2: and still hold to unchanging principles.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Here before me is a Bible.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Used in the inauguration of our first president in seventeen
- 1:25Speaker 2: eighty nine, and I have just taken the oath of
- 1:30Speaker 2: office on the Bible my mother gave me just a
- 1:34Speaker 2: few years ago, opened to a timeless admonition from the
- 1:41Speaker 2: ancient prophet Micah.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He has showed thee, oh Man, what is good and
- 1:50Speaker 1: what doth the.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Lord require thee but to do justly and to love mercy,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and to walk omly with Thy God. This inauguration ceremony
- 2:07Speaker 2: marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our government,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and a new spirit among us. All a president mays
- 2:20Speaker 2: sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Can provide it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Two centuries ago, our nation's birth was a milestone in
- 2:35Speaker 2: the long quest for freedom, but the bold and brilliant
- 2:40Speaker 2: dream which excited the founders of this nation, still awaits
- 2:46Speaker 2: its conservation. I have no new dream to set forth today,
- 2:54Speaker 2: but rather urge of fresh faith.
- 2:58Speaker 1: In the old dream.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Ours was the first society openly to define itself in
- 3:06Speaker 2: terms of both spirituality and human liberty. It is that
- 3:14Speaker 2: unique self definition which has given us an exceptional appeal.
- 3:21Speaker 2: But it also imposes on us a special obligation to
- 3:27Speaker 2: take on those moral duties which, when assumed, seem invariably
- 3:36Speaker 2: to be in our own best interest.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You have given me a great responsibility.
- 3:44Speaker 2: To stay close to you, to be worthy off you,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and to.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Exemplify what you are.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Let us create together a new national spirit of unity
- 4:01Speaker 2: and trust. Your strength can compensate for my weakness, and
- 4:08Speaker 2: your wisdom can help to minimize my mistakes. Let us
- 4:17Speaker 2: learn together, and life together, and work together and pray together,
- 4:26Speaker 2: confident that in the end we will triumph together in.
- 4:32Speaker 1: The right.
- 4:34Speaker 2: The American dream. The American dream endures. We must once
- 4:50Speaker 2: again have full faith in our country and in one another.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I believe America can be better.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We can be even.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Stronger than before. Let our recent mistakes bring a resurgent
- 5:10Speaker 2: commitment to the basic principles of our nation, for we
- 5:14Speaker 2: know that if we despise our own government, we have
- 5:21Speaker 2: no future.
- 5:23Speaker 1: We recall in.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Special times, but we have stood briefly, but magnificently united.
- 5:33Speaker 2: In those times, no prize was beyond our grasp. But
- 5:38Speaker 2: we cannot dwell upon remembered glory. We cannot afford to drift.
- 5:46Speaker 2: We reject the prospect of failure or mediocrity, or an
- 5:52Speaker 2: inferior quality of life for any person. Our government must,
- 5:57Speaker 2: at the same time be both competent and compassionate. We
- 6:05Speaker 2: have already found a high degree of personal liberty, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: we are now struggling to enhance equality of opportunities. Our
- 6:18Speaker 2: commitment to human rights must.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Be absolute, our laws.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Fair, our natural beauty preserve the powerful, must not persecute
- 6:33Speaker 2: the weak, and human dignity must be enhanced. We have
- 6:40Speaker 2: learned that more is not necessarily better, that even our
- 6:49Speaker 2: great nation has its recognized limits, and that we can
- 6:53Speaker 2: neither answer all questions nor solve all problems. We cannot
- 6:59Speaker 2: afford to do everything, nor can we afford to like
- 7:05Speaker 2: boldness as we meet the future.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So together, in a spirit of.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Individual sacrifice for the common good, we must.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Simply do our best.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Our nation can be strong abroad only if it is strong.
- 7:25Speaker 1: At home.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And we know that the best way to enhance freedom
- 7:31Speaker 2: in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic
- 7:36Speaker 2: system is worthy of emulation. To be true to ourselves,
- 7:44Speaker 2: we must be true to others. We will not behave
- 7:49Speaker 2: in foreign places so as to violate our rules and
- 7:54Speaker 2: standards here at home, for we know that the trust
- 7:59Speaker 2: which our nation earns is essential to our strength. The
- 8:06Speaker 2: world itself is now dominated by a new spirit.
- 8:13Speaker 1: People's more numerous.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And more politically aware, are craving and now demanding. They're
- 8:21Speaker 2: placing the sun not just for the benefit of their
- 8:26Speaker 2: own physical condition, but for basic human rights. The passion
- 8:34Speaker 2: for freedom is on the rise.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Tapping this new spirit.
- 8:40Speaker 2: There can be no nobler nor more ambitious tasks for
- 8:47Speaker 2: America to undertake on this day of a new beginning,
- 8:51Speaker 2: than to help shape a just and peaceful world that
- 8:57Speaker 2: is truly humane. We are a strong nation, and we
- 9:03Speaker 2: will maintain strength so sufficient that it need not be
- 9:08Speaker 2: proven in combat. A quiet strength based a quiet strength
- 9:25Speaker 2: based not merely on the size of an arsenal, but
- 9:29Speaker 2: on the nobility of ideas.
- 9:33Speaker 1: We will be ever.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Vigilant and never vulnerable, and We will fight our wars
- 9:41Speaker 2: against poverty, ignorance, and injustice for those other enemies against
- 9:59Speaker 2: which o'all horses can be honorably marshaled. We are a
- 10:05Speaker 2: proudly idealistic nation, but let no one confuse our idealism
- 10:13Speaker 2: with weakness. Because we are free, we can never be
- 10:18Speaker 2: indifferent to the fate of freedom elsewhere.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Our moral sense.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Dictates a clear cut preference.
- 10:37Speaker 1: For those societies would share.
- 10:39Speaker 2: With us an abiding respect for individual human rights.
- 10:45Speaker 1: We do not seek to intimidate, but.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It is clear that a world which others can dominate
- 10:53Speaker 2: with impunity would be inhospitable to decency and a threat
- 10:59Speaker 2: to the well being of all people.
- 11:03Speaker 1: The world is.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Still engaged in a massive armaments race designed to ensure
- 11:11Speaker 2: continuing equivalent strength among potential adversaries. We pledge perseverance and
- 11:20Speaker 2: wisdom in our efforts to limit the world's armaments to
- 11:25Speaker 2: those necessary for each nation's own domestic safety, and we.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Will move this year a step toward our ultimate.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Goal, the elimination of all nuclear weapons from this earth.
- 11:51Speaker 2: We urge all of the people to join us, for
- 11:57Speaker 2: success can mean life instead of death. Within us, the
- 12:06Speaker 2: people of the United States, there is evident, a serious
- 12:11Speaker 2: and purposeful rekindling of confidence.
- 12:15Speaker 1: And I joined in the.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Hope that when my time as your president has ended,
- 12:22Speaker 2: people might say this about our nation, that we had
- 12:27Speaker 2: remembered the words of Micah and renewed our search for humility, mercy,
- 12:36Speaker 2: and justice. That we had torn down the barriers that
- 12:40Speaker 2: separated those of different race and region and religion, and
- 12:47Speaker 2: where there had been mistrust, built unity with a respect
- 12:54Speaker 2: for diversity. That we had found productive work for those able.
- 13:00Speaker 1: To perform it.
- 13:02Speaker 2: That we had strengthened the American family, which is a
- 13:07Speaker 2: basis of our society.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That we had ensured respect for the law.
- 13:14Speaker 2: And equal treatment under the law for the weak and
- 13:19Speaker 2: the powerful, for the rich and the poor, And that
- 13:23Speaker 2: we had enabled our people to be proud of.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Their own government once again. I would hope.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I would hope that the nations of the world might
- 13:43Speaker 2: say that we had built a lasting peace based.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Not on weapons of war, but on.
- 13:51Speaker 2: International policies which reflect our own most precious values. These
- 14:01Speaker 2: are not just my goals, and they will not be
- 14:06Speaker 2: my accomplishments, but the affirmation of our nations continuing moral
- 14:13Speaker 2: strength and our belief in an undiminished ever expanding American dream.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Thank you very much,
