- 0:08Welcome on in everybody here to the
- 0:09postgame [music] pod at Auburn
- 0:11Undercover. Nathan King joined by
- 0:13Patrick Bingham here in the Georgia
- 0:15press room. Uh you'll notice the
- 0:17obviously the Bulldog logo behind us.
- 0:19Had to get kind of creative. Not out on
- 0:20the court today because they are uh
- 0:22cleaning off with leaf blowers. So that
- 0:24tends to be a little bit loud. I
- 0:25remember they did that last time here.
- 0:27Uh Patrick, an absolutely thrilling way
- 0:30for Auburn to open SEC play. The only
- 0:33thing this game lacked, if you're
- 0:34Auburn, was a win. This one had
- 0:36absolutely everything. Um and had a
- 0:38miraculous shot and it did not Yeah, it
- 0:40didn't have neither team had defense. Uh
- 0:42it was a miraculous shot by Kevin
- 0:44Overton to send it to overtime. Uh
- 0:46Georgia led by four in it just was
- 0:49almost like a it was almost like a you
- 0:51just heave it up there at the end if
- 0:53you're if you're Keshan Hall. And they
- 0:55did the biggest no no, which is you
- 0:56foul. there on a three-point play and uh
- 1:00Kev Keshan Hall obviously misses the
- 1:01free throw. Kevin Overton with.7 less
- 1:04than a second able to gather himself and
- 1:06shoot a baseline jumper um to send
- 1:08Auburn to overtime but not able to
- 1:10prevail in the overtime period. They
- 1:13were up by three at one point. Uh Kevin
- 1:14Overton had two big shots early on in
- 1:17the overtime period, but ultimately
- 1:18defense is is what causes this loss for
- 1:22Auburn. Jeremiah Wilkinson for for
- 1:23Georgia was phenomenal with 31 points.
- 1:25Uh, Smurf Miller adds 24 as well. But as
- 1:28Steven Pearl said in his postgame,
- 1:30Patrick, I mean, the theme of this one
- 1:32was one-on-one defense. We knew this was
- 1:34going to be a guard driven. It's a guard
- 1:36attack for Georgia. And simply put, I
- 1:39mean, Auburn just couldn't stay in front
- 1:40of their man on the perimeter and and
- 1:42dribbling past those guys just sort of
- 1:44broke everything down for Auburn's
- 1:46defense.
- 1:46>> Yeah. And as much as like basketball's a
- 1:48game of runs and obviously this was a
- 1:50game of runs and momentum, it almost
- 1:51felt like it was a game of like
- 1:52individual player runs. I mean, Kevin
- 1:56obviously like made that shot, but then
- 1:57he was obviously still hot. Made the
- 1:59first few shots of overtime. Blue Kane
- 2:01had a big fourth or second half. So, it
- 2:03was a bunch of different players. But I
- 2:06think the thing that I continue to think
- 2:08about is um
- 2:10like Georgia beat you with the threes
- 2:12and that they were ranked in the 200s
- 2:14coming nationally, coming into the game.
- 2:15And it's like if you had told me they
- 2:17were going to win that stat, I was going
- 2:19to struggle to think Auburn had won.
- 2:20That being said, Auburn made I mean I
- 2:22mean you score 100 points, everyone
- 2:23makes shots, but it's the defense at the
- 2:26end of the day that you just continually
- 2:28and for so much of that second half it
- 2:30was like Auburn was down by one and they
- 2:32kept missing a shot. Georgia would go
- 2:33score and then Auburn would answer but
- 2:35they were down by one again and it was
- 2:37just like you couldn't get over that
- 2:38hump. They obviously like in a crazy way
- 2:40did
- 2:41>> but again it was just that defense.
- 2:42>> Yeah, Stephen said it after the game. I
- 2:44mean you you put yourself in position to
- 2:46win this game so many times. I meant to
- 2:47look it up afterwards what Auburn shot
- 2:49in this game when they were trailing by
- 2:51exactly one. It might have been like 0
- 2:53of 13 because there was one possession
- 2:55where they go down, they had four shots
- 2:57all at the rim uh with offensive
- 2:58rebounds, couldn't get it, missed a
- 2:59couple three-pointers, had an 0 for2
- 3:01trip at the foul line. All of those were
- 3:02with an opportunity to take the lead. Um
- 3:04it was Yeah, they had an offensive lull
- 3:06there in the second half. I think that
- 3:07that was the stretch that really killed
- 3:08them. They missed 10 straight shots.
- 3:09Yes. Um in the second half, that's what
- 3:11really came back
- 3:12>> and yet they still had a chance to win.
- 3:13>> And yet at the end of the game that they
- 3:14still have an opportunity to go to
- 3:15overtime. It is worth noting they were
- 3:17short-handed in overtime, so they didn't
- 3:18have Todd Pedford. He fouled out at the
- 3:20end of regulation. Scores 25 points.
- 3:21We'll touch on him a little bit later.
- 3:23And uh Philip Yovic quickly fouled out
- 3:25in overtime. Great game for him. 10
- 3:27rebounds. Um he had a double double,
- 3:30>> five offensive rebounds, mixed in there.
- 3:32Auburn outrebounded Georgia, which
- 3:34entered this game top 10 nally in in in
- 3:36total rebounding rate. Auburn
- 3:37outrebounded Georgia by 15 in this one.
- 3:39And Stephen Pearl went back to that in
- 3:41his postgame as another way to say this
- 3:44isn't about size. He he sort of I wish I
- 3:46had the quote from him on radio because
- 3:48he was a little bit more snarky with it.
- 3:49But it's like he he said, you know, he's
- 3:51tired of talking about the lack of size
- 3:53this team has because that was not the
- 3:55issue for them in this game as evidenced
- 3:57by their rebounding. It was the fact
- 3:58that they were beaten off the dribble so
- 3:59often. And it was different guys for
- 4:00Georgia at different moments. Blue Kane
- 4:02you mentioned at the end of of
- 4:03regulation. Uh Smurf Miller for me was
- 4:05was the MVP of the game for Georgia
- 4:08until Wilkinson at the very end came
- 4:10down with it. And so yeah, I mean
- 4:11Auburn's guards were were clearly
- 4:12outplayed. Um and this one in that
- 4:14perimeter defense remains a really big
- 4:15issue.
- 4:16>> Yeah. And I think that was the thing is
- 4:17that it was
- 4:19>> it it wasn't down low. It wasn't because
- 4:21Keshan Murphy
- 4:23>> I guess was injured. He wasn't 100%
- 4:25seemed like it. I mean, that's kind of
- 4:27he didn't say anything official after
- 4:28the game, but I mean, even though Phil
- 4:31was having a I mean, a great game, and
- 4:32that's probably why he didn't get beat
- 4:34so bad down low. It It was the guard
- 4:36play. And yes, Auburn was able to answer
- 4:39it. But like, even for me, like
- 4:40offensively, it's the weird like you
- 4:42score 100 points, the offense wasn't the
- 4:44problem. Steven said the offense was
- 4:45fine, but in a game you lost by a
- 4:49couple, you missed over
- 4:50>> 22 three-pointers. Yeah.
- 4:51>> Yeah. You miss a bunch of
- 4:52three-pointers, you miss a bunch of foul
- 4:54shots. And so it's just kind of like
- 4:57yes, like you still were able to score a
- 4:59lot of the points. And a lot of the
- 5:00stats are skewed because you played five
- 5:01extra minutes if you just look at it
- 5:03like that, but it like you just couldn't
- 5:07make the defensive play. You just
- 5:09couldn't make that last shot. And then
- 5:10they did, but it just ultimately didn't
- 5:13play out.
- 5:13>> I mean, it felt like like you're saying
- 5:14on on both ends of the floor, it just
- 5:15felt like Georgia I was talking to
- 5:17Jordan Hill who works for our our
- 5:19Georgia 247 site. Um it felt like
- 5:21Georgia won this game. Like they went
- 5:22out and took it. they went out and made
- 5:24the winning plays. You just
- 5:26>> here and there four or five different
- 5:28possessions where you just you sort of
- 5:29winced at what Auburn did, whether that
- 5:31was on the defensive end when they let
- 5:32Santos go all the way back on the on the
- 5:35that was just obviously a
- 5:36miscommunication whe whether Sebastian
- 5:38Williams Adams just didn't play that
- 5:39properly. Um the possession at the end
- 5:41of goodness I'm bl I believe this the
- 5:43end of overtime not regulation when
- 5:45Keshan Hall goes down
- 5:46>> and just kind of gets trapped in the
- 5:48corner and and has to make a pass down
- 5:49low. he's double teamed and like that
- 5:51just like steam pearl said post game
- 5:52nobody moved and it just was a pass that
- 5:54had no that had no chance. Um Todd
- 5:56Pedford was really good in this one for
- 5:57for Auburn 25 points although he faded
- 5:59down the stretch. He missed all six of
- 6:00his three-pointers in the second half
- 6:02again like you're saying just one or two
- 6:04of those goes a different way. It could
- 6:05be a different result. Um but the big
- 6:07>> story with Pedford in this game is he
- 6:09comes off the bench for the first time
- 6:10>> for Auburn this season. It was very
- 6:12clear early on it wasn't injury related.
- 6:14Like it it was obvious Magwood picked up
- 6:16two quick fouls and Pedford was in the
- 6:17game and looked like himself right away.
- 6:19We knew it was probably some sort of
- 6:20team decision and and Steven Pearl says
- 6:22after the game um it was a quote failure
- 6:24to meet team standards and and Steven
- 6:27kind of used that question about Todd
- 6:29and and that explanation as an
- 6:30opportunity
- 6:32>> it seemed like to me sort of challenged
- 6:33the team. He said when they came back
- 6:35from Purdue it was a little bit more
- 6:37>> hey guys we got to tighten up. He
- 6:38mentioned like you know get to meetings
- 6:39on time things like that and he said
- 6:41about Tahad look you know this is the
- 6:42team leader um his exact quote was he's
- 6:45got to stop putting me in positions to
- 6:47make difficult decisions. So, it's I
- 6:50think it's a it's a minor thing right
- 6:52now that people probably shouldn't latch
- 6:54on to too too much, but it does sort of
- 6:56underscore that Steven Pearl's not going
- 6:58to back down in terms of his challenge
- 7:00of this team in a lot of different ways.
- 7:01He's challenging them on defense. He's
- 7:02obviously challenging them off the court
- 7:04to to to be a little bit tighter. And
- 7:06so, room to improve for this Auburn team
- 7:09for sure. I think you saw a lot of
- 7:11positives in this game. you saw a lot of
- 7:12things where you you were just one or
- 7:13two possessions away from getting this
- 7:15one, but yet at the same time, just like
- 7:17we said after non-conference play,
- 7:19>> it feels like there's just still so much
- 7:21unknown and still so much room to grow
- 7:22for this team.
- 7:23>> Well, and that's the thing is like I
- 7:24think it can go both ways of like, oh,
- 7:26you were so close. You make literally
- 7:29one more foul shot, you win the game. I
- 7:31mean, like there's so many different
- 7:32like you were so close, but at the same
- 7:33time it's like
- 7:35>> glaring issues. Yeah, there was glaring
- 7:37issues and Georgia was oh, just a couple
- 7:39shots away from it really not being
- 7:41close either because you missed those
- 7:43like 10 straight shots or whatever. And
- 7:45so it's kind of like how can you
- 7:48I guess meet in the middle of that. But
- 7:51um that I mean that's just where we go
- 7:53from here is now you're on to Texas A&M
- 7:55and can you take advantage? I think the
- 7:57thing that hurts the most from this
- 7:58because we were talking about it I guess
- 7:59after the Queens game was like this and
- 8:01obviously it turned into that kind of
- 8:03game but like this is one you really
- 8:04could have stole um and you're obviously
- 8:08unable to Georgia has a really good team
- 8:09their offense is as advertised but at
- 8:11the same time like there's so many
- 8:12things where you're looking back like if
- 8:13we could have just done this one thing
- 8:15we come out with the win and we get to
- 8:17fix all the issues off of that.
- 8:19>> Yeah. That same conversation we had you
- 8:20mentioned after Queens about SEC play in
- 8:23in particular this beginning stretch of
- 8:25SEC play. it still applies. We knew this
- 8:28game was going to be really difficult.
- 8:29Like we knew this was going to be one of
- 8:30the toughest games for them early on.
- 8:32Probably I mean this is in terms of
- 8:34venue and team this might be the
- 8:36toughest. Obviously Arkansas is analy
- 8:38analytically and and and you know the
- 8:40way they look they're probably a better
- 8:41team than Georgia but you get them at
- 8:43home and so obviously not the end of the
- 8:45world for Auburn to drop this one. You
- 8:46know they got 17 SEC games left. Of
- 8:48course it's not the end of the world but
- 8:49as you mentioned it will be nice for
- 8:51them to have an opportunity to get right
- 8:52at home. And I think those are a couple
- 8:54games next week that look Arkansas's,
- 8:56you know, Texas&M has had their
- 8:57struggles. Arkansas is is a is a much
- 8:59better team
- 9:00>> than the Aggies, but you would love to
- 9:02get some win back in your sales there
- 9:03because right now you're feeling like
- 9:05>> your last few opportunities to play away
- 9:07from home, particularly on defense.
- 9:09You've just had a lot of struggles. And
- 9:10so, um, that's obviously first and
- 9:12foremost. If if Steven Pearl didn't make
- 9:13it clear enough, um, which if you're
- 9:15watching this on the YouTube channel,
- 9:16you can go watch his press conference as
- 9:18well, that that is that remains their
- 9:19focus. He said before the year, early on
- 9:21in the year, they needed to be what, top
- 9:2250, top 60 analytically and defense,
- 9:24something like that. And and they're
- 9:26they were number 78 before this game,
- 9:27and they're probably going going further
- 9:29backwards. And so that remains the uh
- 9:31the struggle right now for Auburn
- 9:32basketball. Uh 104 to 100. They dropped
- 9:34this game in overtime in Athens here in
- 9:36Stigman Coliseum. For Patrick Bingham, I
