Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: All right, well here on the One Leg Up Network,
• 0:08
Speaker 2: I'm Alex Garrett, and do you remember when I did
• 0:10
Speaker 2: this one Leg Up flashback with Brandon Nimmo Colin, which
• 0:15
Speaker 2: is why the Mets and Astros are tied at four
• 0:18
Speaker 2: in the bottom of the ninth in a rain delay.
• 0:21
Speaker 3: Oh two coming, and that's driven out to left center field.
• 0:24
Speaker 3: Back in the cap here the wall time hair. Brandon
• 0:28
Speaker 3: Nimmo ties the game with his one hundred career hormone,
• 0:33
Speaker 3: a two run shot for Nimmo, and the Mets have
• 0:36
Speaker 3: come back to tie at four to four.
• 0:38
  Speaker 2: Of the seventh.
• 0:44
  Speaker 1: That call courtesy of s n Y.
• 0:47
Speaker 2: That's right, Brandon Nimmo, a two run shot opposite field
• 0:51
Speaker 2: Jack his one hundredth, yes, one hundredth home run of
• 0:54
Speaker 2: his career. Now, I got to talk to him when
• 0:57
Speaker 2: he was in his younger stages, as I met back
• 1:01
Speaker 2: in twenty seventeen, thanks to doctor Dan Miller's recommendation of a
• 1:05
Speaker 2: press pass and his hook up there with WOX Radio, which.
• 1:09
  Speaker 1: This aired on.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: By the way, here, Brandon and I talked about the
• 1:14
Speaker 2: mentorship of Curtis Granderson and how yes, back in twenty seventeen,
• 1:21
Speaker 2: Nimo was looking to improve and then of course today
• 1:24
Speaker 2: he's improved so much he h at Homer one hundred.
• 1:27
Speaker 2: So Brendan, you're starting tonight at part you know, you're
• 1:30
Speaker 2: on the leadoff spot tonight. Yeah, but it's gonna be
• 1:32
Speaker 2: a line up about Curtis I feel about that, And
• 1:34
Speaker 2: how do you feel?
• 1:34
Speaker 4: You know, we all love Curtis, but you know, it's
• 1:39
Speaker 4: part of the business and so you have to you
• 1:40
Speaker 4: have to realize that. For it's it's something that you know,
• 1:45
Speaker 4: I think we all just have to go about our
• 1:46
Speaker 4: business the same way. Remember how he went about his
• 1:50
Speaker 4: Kitnatu was an incredible guy. He really led by example.
• 1:54
Speaker 4: So just trying to you know, keep his work ethic
• 1:58
Speaker 4: and his humble missile live.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: Now even back up a little while now, So what's
• 2:02
Speaker 1: it like being back up here? And what do you have?
• 2:04
Speaker 1: You said, what are you working on?
• 2:05
Speaker 4: You know, just just really having fun and and you know,
• 2:09
Speaker 4: swinging the bat, you know, working on the teeth beads.
• 2:12
Speaker 4: It's it's, you know, working on all of it. It's
• 2:15
Speaker 4: it can all be improved. I think for the day
• 2:18
Speaker 4: just stopped working, this day stopped playing. So you just
• 2:21
Speaker 4: keep working on on your whole game, trying to improve
• 2:24
  Speaker 4: it all.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: All right, Brandon, welcome luck to the rest of us
• 2:26
Speaker 2: in the rush of the away games.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: We got it, Thank you. I mean, how cool is that?
• 2:29
  Speaker 1: Brandon Nemo?
• 2:30
Speaker 2: Nice guy, one of the nicest guys and honestly a
• 2:34
  Speaker 2: cornerstone to.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: This met team until he wasn't.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: Last night Jeff passing the ESPN room breaking the news
• 2:47
Speaker 2: that Brandon Neimo waved his no trade clause in a
• 2:51
Speaker 2: trade for Tech to Texas for Marcus Simeon. I think
• 2:57
Speaker 2: it's interesting that back in twenty seventeen he recognized.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Trades are part of the business.
• 3:02
Speaker 2: Life in baseball is also business, to the point where
• 3:07
Speaker 2: eight years later in twenty twenty five, in twenty twenty five,
• 3:16
Speaker 2: he is now waves his no trade claws and gone
• 3:19
Speaker 2: to Texas. But Brandon Nimo is one of three New
• 3:24
Speaker 2: York I would say icons are really hallmarks that had
• 3:32
Speaker 2: departed because they had given the team a time, their
• 3:37
Speaker 2: time and energy and love and said well it's time
• 3:43
  Speaker 2: to move along.
• 3:46
Speaker 1: And I'm sure for Brandon making the NLCS, obviously we
• 3:50
  Speaker 1: saw the.
• 3:50
Speaker 2: Emotions in his face when they made the NLCS against
• 3:53
  Speaker 2: the Dodgers.
• 3:56
Speaker 1: I mean, he was on that one hundred and one
• 3:58
Speaker 1: win team again and.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: That got swip the by the Padres, which was unbelievable
• 4:05
Speaker 2: at home. So then a couple of years later making
• 4:08
Speaker 2: it to the NLCS versus the hot Dodgers just last
• 4:12
Speaker 2: year and beating Philly of course, but in his seven
• 4:20
Speaker 2: eight years actually I believe nine because he came in
• 4:24
Speaker 2: twenty sixteen, what uh part of this met team. But
• 4:33
Speaker 2: he waved his no trade class And that's what I
• 4:35
Speaker 2: want to highlight tonight. Brandon Nimmo joining Chris Crider who
• 4:39
Speaker 2: waved his trade no trade class to go to Anaheim.
• 4:43
Speaker 2: And then of course John Tavares, who basically told the
• 4:46
Speaker 2: Aliders he was gonna stay, of course does not stay,
• 4:52
Speaker 2: basically requests to trade to Toronto. It begs the question here,
• 5:02
Speaker 2: what do we do to make these teams more.
• 5:08
Speaker 1: Staying power. I mean the Rangers, I guess told them
• 5:13
Speaker 1: we're gonna trade them. So christ said, okay, trade me.
• 5:16
Speaker 1: That's it. That was it.
• 5:19
Speaker 2: But the no trade clause waving is the thing that
• 5:22
Speaker 2: I wanna highlight because quite frankly, it means that these
• 5:30
Speaker 2: guys are giving their heart and soul for a point
• 5:34
Speaker 2: a period of time till they realize, maybe we cannot
• 5:38
Speaker 2: win here, Maybe we do have to move along. Maybe
• 5:43
Speaker 2: it is time to spread our wings and go elsewhere
• 5:46
Speaker 2: and see if we can win that vaunted championship.
• 5:52
  Speaker 1: Toronto struggled.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: Toronto has struggled even with Austin Matthews, to get to
• 5:57
Speaker 2: that point as a.
• 5:59
Speaker 1: Franchise, to get near the Stanley Cup final finals.
• 6:05
Speaker 2: The Ducks, they're sort of rebuilding, and now criters come
• 6:07
Speaker 2: in and electrified that team.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: And now Brandon Nimmo.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: Of the three leaving a Mets team that, yes, has
• 6:18
Speaker 2: won Soto, but what pitching do they have?
• 6:23
Speaker 1: What pitching do they have?
• 6:28
Speaker 2: And so what's it going to take for our New
• 6:29
Speaker 2: York teams to either not blow up the whole core
• 6:34
Speaker 2: so that other guys don't want to be there anymore,
• 6:37
Speaker 2: or start to focus on winning and not tanking and
• 6:41
Speaker 2: non on draft picks and none on.
• 6:43
Speaker 1: Who can be the next best guy.
• 6:47
Speaker 2: We call up on the farm, you know, we we
• 6:53
Speaker 2: calledivate on the farm, or next best free agent signing
• 6:56
Speaker 2: we can grab the read no trade clause waves here
• 7:05
Speaker 2: feel like a similar theme. New York does not have
• 7:10
Speaker 2: the staying power we thought it once did.
• 7:15
  Speaker 1: Aaron Judge stayed.
• 7:16
Speaker 2: Because I think he knew in his heart he's a
• 7:18
Speaker 2: Yankee through and through Derek Jeter, lifelong Yankee through and
• 7:25
Speaker 2: through David Wright. If he wasn't injured, yes, and of
• 7:30
Speaker 2: his career has meant, but he would have been even
• 7:32
Speaker 2: more successful as a Met if he didn't injure his
• 7:34
Speaker 2: back like he did. There are lifelongers, we're just seeing
• 7:43
Speaker 2: far and few between of them. And part of it
• 7:49
Speaker 2: is a decision on management parts to blow up a
• 7:52
Speaker 2: team now when you could have kept Goodro, you could
• 7:55
Speaker 2: have kept Cocko, you could have kept well Truba was
• 7:59
Speaker 2: a problem, but you could have kept those guys on
• 8:01
Speaker 2: the Rangers. But you didn't, and Crider's gone. Now the
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Mets need to rebuild, and clearly getting rid of Nemo was.
• 8:11
Speaker 1: Part of the rebuilt. It's a sad day though, to
• 8:14
  Speaker 1: see Nimo go.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: He was a decent player, a decent guy on and
• 8:19
Speaker 2: off the field. He was a He bled the orange
• 8:23
Speaker 2: and blue pinstripes right there. And so my question to
• 8:30
Speaker 2: you at Alex at alex ganyc dot com, Alex at
• 8:34
Speaker 2: alexanyc dot com, what will make the city have staying power?
• 8:41
Speaker 2: We've lost it. Teams are even not not even afraid
• 8:46
Speaker 2: to come into New York anymore because they might They
• 8:48
Speaker 2: know they have a chance to win, a very good
• 8:49
  Speaker 2: chance to win.
• 8:51
Speaker 1: We used to be a feared city.
• 8:53
Speaker 2: We used to be the city no one ever wanted
• 8:55
Speaker 2: to wave their no trade clause for. We used to
• 8:59
Speaker 2: be the city that said, yes, we're gonna keep winning,
• 9:01
Speaker 2: You're gonna keep staying here, We're gonna keep building. No,
• 9:05
Speaker 2: it's all about imploding and sticking with coaches till the
• 9:10
Speaker 2: very last second. I mean, Bowen should have been fired
• 9:15
Speaker 2: after the Denver collapse.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: It happened today. Fine, But it's just this systematic, systematic.
• 9:29
Speaker 2: Problem of staying power that Brendan Nimo now joins Chris
• 9:34
Speaker 2: Krider and John Deaveres in highlighting here.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: In New York Sports.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: So maybe the goal now is, instead of blowing up teams,
• 9:45
Speaker 2: is to have one leg up on staying power for
• 9:48
Speaker 2: our New York sports, one leg up on staying power
• 9:54
Speaker 2: for New York sports.
• 9:55
Speaker 1: How do we get there? How do we achieve it?
• 9:58
Speaker 2: For the Yankees, you don't stick with the Devin Williams
• 10:02
Speaker 2: for nine more times in the next season.
• 10:04
Speaker 1: Maybe you do, Maybe you do resign them. I don't
• 10:06
Speaker 1: like that reunion idea. But if I'm aren't judge and
• 10:16
Speaker 1: I signed into a nine year.
• 10:17
Speaker 2: Deal, one that did include a World's aias appearance, I
• 10:26
Speaker 2: would want to see my management making the right moves here,
• 10:30
Speaker 2: bringing the right guys.
• 10:31
Speaker 1: In, and as fans.
• 10:35
Speaker 2: As fans, we should want our teams to play with
• 10:40
Speaker 2: respect and pride. It was five blown losses too long,
• 10:46
Speaker 2: It was two blown losses too long for the Giants
• 10:50
Speaker 2: to make the move of getting rid of Bowen. But
• 10:55
  Speaker 2: we make these.
• 10:56
Speaker 1: Moves as a city way too late, way too late.
• 11:04
Speaker 2: And maybe when you see a crider, when you see
• 11:07
Speaker 2: a demo, when you see it Tavaris wave their no
• 11:11
Speaker 2: trade clause. Basically, you're seeing these guys saying we don't
• 11:15
  Speaker 2: like the.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: Way these teams are run.
• 11:17
Speaker 2: And if they're not happy with the way the teams
• 11:19
Speaker 2: are run, we sure as hell should be upset too.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: We the fans should be upset, if our players are upset,
• 11:28
Speaker 2: we should be upset, and we should want our teams
• 11:33
Speaker 2: to strive for better, not be in the dumpster for
• 11:37
Speaker 2: another draft pick because another rebuild.
• 11:41
Speaker 1: I think Nemo is thinking, like I did, I'm getting
• 11:43
Speaker 1: too old for this shit. I gotta move along before
• 11:48
Speaker 1: especially now that started just kind of pushing me out
• 11:49
Speaker 1: the door. I'm getting too old for this. I gotta
• 11:51
Speaker 1: move along and do what's best for right for me.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: What the business move for me. You don't want me here, fine,
• 11:57
  Speaker 1: I'm gone.
• 12:02
Speaker 2: But that again goes to not having enough staying power.
• 12:09
Speaker 2: At the same time, Trent Grisham signs a twenty two
• 12:14
Speaker 2: million dollar deal to stay with the Yankees. To stay
• 12:19
Speaker 2: with the Yankees, he believes in something here. He took
• 12:22
  Speaker 2: that deal.
• 12:24
Speaker 1: People could be pissed, but I think the.
• 12:26
Speaker 2: Show's character when a guy who was a free agent
• 12:28
Speaker 2: wants to come back, wants to contribute to the Yankees
• 12:33
Speaker 2: and build off the year he had. Maybe there's something
• 12:35
Speaker 2: here that he sees that aren't judged so a few
• 12:38
Speaker 2: years ago that made him come back beyond just wearing
• 12:40
Speaker 2: the pinstripes. So in that case, we had staying power.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: But in these other cases where these guys are waving
• 12:53
Speaker 2: their no trade claws, we have to figure out a
• 12:57
Speaker 2: way to keep these guys happy they don't feel like
• 13:00
Speaker 2: they have to wave their no trade clause so that
• 13:02
Speaker 2: they do want to be in this team for the
• 13:05
Speaker 2: rest of their career, and as Lou and I talk about,
• 13:11
Speaker 2: I think getting rid of analytics and all these sports
• 13:14
Speaker 2: will be big. I think the idea of blowing up
• 13:16
Speaker 2: teams should go out the window. I think you got
• 13:19
Speaker 2: to figure out the core.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: Remember we talk about the Yankees the Core four.
• 13:24
Speaker 2: There is no core anything anymore with any of these teams,
• 13:32
Speaker 2: and the Mets lost their core. He waved his no
• 13:41
Speaker 2: trade clause. And I do not blame Brandon Nimo for this.
• 13:45
Speaker 2: I think he's doing what he needs to do his
• 13:47
Speaker 2: first family. But it should be a wake up call.
• 13:54
Speaker 2: How do we stay attractive as a market, as a
• 14:00
Speaker 2: city of all these sports teams, to make these guys
• 14:04
Speaker 2: stay through their career.
• 14:10
Speaker 1: And love it here.
• 14:14
Speaker 2: Because you'll see other career, other trade clauses might be
• 14:19
Speaker 2: waved down the road by somebody.
• 14:28
Speaker 1: I mean, this is really a big deal to me.
• 14:33
Speaker 2: That he is the third guy in a span of
• 14:37
Speaker 2: about ten years to wave as no trains that I'm moving,
• 14:44
Speaker 2: I'm leaving, I'm doing something better. I believe in what
• 14:48
Speaker 2: Texas is doing now, but we can do better as
• 14:56
Speaker 2: a city to make this more attractive for these guys
• 14:59
Speaker 2: to stay in the pin stripes. Whether it's orange and
• 15:02
Speaker 2: blue or the Yankee pin stripes. Stay in the blue shirts,
• 15:10
Speaker 2: stay in the Big blue, the game green, the Devil's red,
• 15:15
Speaker 2: the Islander's blue and orange. And it's a top down effect,
• 15:27
Speaker 2: a top down effect. The Giants have an interim firing
• 15:33
Speaker 2: a defensive coordinator. Where was the guts to fire him before?
• 15:38
Speaker 2: If Davill could have the option, whine and he to
• 15:40
Speaker 2: do it, and Marr had the option, whin, didn't you
• 15:44
Speaker 2: to do it? So if you look at this latest
• 15:50
Speaker 2: note trade Claus Wave and this trader Brandon Neimo.
• 15:57
  Speaker 1: That's a wake up call.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: That the long standing Met who's been there since twenty
• 16:06
Speaker 2: sixteen is moving along.
• 16:12
Speaker 1: The city is not gonna be meant for career year
• 16:15
  Speaker 1: career players anymore.
• 16:18
Speaker 2: On the trajectory we're going, and maybe the culture of
• 16:24
Speaker 2: winning and the culture of respect and pride on the field.
• 16:29
Speaker 2: I mean, he also went through a season where the
• 16:30
Speaker 2: Mets completely screwed up their season. They were the best
• 16:35
Speaker 2: team in June, then they just tanked Dove out of
• 16:39
  Speaker 2: the playoffs.
• 16:45
  Speaker 1: It was stunning.
• 16:46
Speaker 2: This year. I think Nemo saw that there wasn't gonna
• 16:54
Speaker 2: be much change, so he moved and he went and
• 16:58
Speaker 2: accept the not trade that waving the trade close except to.
• 17:01
Speaker 1: The deal, and he's on the greener pastures if you will.
• 17:08
Speaker 2: So all these teams watching this moment, know your career
• 17:15
Speaker 2: player wants to be happy and wants a team around
• 17:20
Speaker 2: him to make them happy so that they're not slipping
• 17:25
  Speaker 2: and falling short.
• 17:26
  Speaker 1: Every season.
• 17:28
Speaker 2: These guys will go out there just to play one
• 17:30
Speaker 2: sixty two and go home. They play to win the game,
• 17:35
Speaker 2: as Herman Edwoods said, and Brendan Nimmo was an example,
• 17:40
Speaker 2: a shining example of that. He had one leg up
• 17:44
Speaker 2: in New York sports and we will miss him dearly.
• 17:47
Speaker 2: But just think about this, how do we have staying
• 17:51
Speaker 2: power in New York City for these career athletes that
• 17:55
Speaker 2: should want to spend their time in New York and
• 17:59
Speaker 2: not want a way. There're no trade claws. Let's make
• 18:05
Speaker 2: the city more attractive and make this a sports town
• 18:11
  Speaker 2: once again.
