- 0:00What if I told you that some of the things making your
- 0:02Parkinson's symptoms worse aren't actually your symptoms at
- 0:06all? They're habits.
- 0:08Sneaky, quiet, everyday habits that start small and before you
- 0:12know it, they built themselves right into your routine.
- 0:15And don't worry, I'm not about to preach about smoking or
- 0:19drinking or kale smoothies. I'm talking about 5 hidden
- 0:22Parkinson's habits that almost every one of us slips into.
- 0:25I've done them all, and some of them nearly ran my life for
- 0:29years. Well, today I'm going to walk
- 0:31you through all five, with the science behind why they happen
- 0:34and the stories that prove it, and some simple ways to flip the
- 0:37script and stick with me till the very end.
- 0:39Because I've got a challenge for you, and one that might
- 0:42completely change your next month.
- 0:45Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 0:49and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:53community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:58Hey everyone, I'm Bryce and this is living with Parkinson's.
- 1:00The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 1:02Now, if you're new here, welcome to the family.
- 1:05I was diagnosed with Parkinson's when I was 40 years old and for
- 1:08a long time, I just tried to power through it.
- 1:11It's a long 15 years. I told myself I didn't need to
- 1:14talk about it and then I can handle it alone.
- 1:16But the truth is, Parkinson's doesn't just challenge your
- 1:19body, it rewires your habits, your confidence, your energy,
- 1:22and your mindset. And that's why this channel
- 1:24exists. Because none of us should have
- 1:26to figure this out alone. Now, if you've been around here
- 1:29for a while, you already know this community is growing fast.
- 1:32Thousands of people are tuning in because they've tired of
- 1:35surviving and they want to live. So that's you too.
- 1:38Hit subscribe and stay with me because we have got some work to
- 1:41do. But let's get into these five
- 1:43habits that you might not even realize you're doing.
- 1:46And let's start with the let's start with habit #5 and this is
- 1:50a big one. It's the I'll rest when I feel
- 1:52better habit. Now here's how that one looked
- 1:55for me. I remember one day I sat down
- 1:57after breakfast thinking I'll just rest a minute before I
- 2:00stretch. I blinked and suddenly it was
- 2:03lunch. I convinced myself I was too
- 2:05tired to move, but in reality, not moving was why I was tired.
- 2:11Now here's the science. Dopamine doesn't just control
- 2:13how we move, it controls our drive to move.
- 2:17When dopamine drops, your brain starts rewarding rest instead of
- 2:21activity. It says you've done enough, stay
- 2:24still. I don't mind that one.
- 2:26Right, but what that really means is your brain is tricking
- 2:31you. It's giving you permission to
- 2:33slow down and when what your body actually needs is momentum.
- 2:37And trust me, I've fallen for that trick more than once.
- 2:40I remember one time I told Carmen I think I needed a rest
- 2:44day and she said, Bryce, you've had a rest week.
- 2:46And that's when I realized the difference between tired and
- 2:49stuck. Now, if that sounds familiar, I
- 2:53want you to comment right now and tell me how this habit shows
- 2:56up for you. Because when we name it, we can
- 2:58change it. Now here's the fix.
- 3:02Don't wait for your energy. Don't wait for energy before you
- 3:05move. Let movement create energy.
- 3:08It's kind of opposite to how we think, isn't it?
- 3:10Do something small, walk, you know during commercials, stretch
- 3:14in bed before you stand up. Do laps around the kitchen
- 3:18island, right? Yes, laps.
- 3:20I do it all the time. Carmen laughs every time she
- 3:22catches me passing the fridge for the fifth time.
- 3:25We've got, we can walk through our kitchen, through our dining
- 3:27room, like in the hallway and around.
- 3:29And I just keep, I do laps. It's, it's like a, it's like a
- 3:32routine because every step you take, your brain is relearning
- 3:36movement. And once you start, it's a lot
- 3:38easier to keep going. OK, so let's talk about this,
- 3:42about the habit #4 right. And we're making our way up here
- 3:45to #1 but the I can do it myself habit.
- 3:49Now this one hits home. I used to be terrible for this
- 3:53and I sometimes still can slip into this one very easily.
- 3:56I'd wave people off costly. Nope, I've got it right.
- 3:59I didn't want to look weak or like I was giving up
- 4:03independence. But there's a big difference
- 4:05between independence and isolation.
- 4:08The truth is, social interaction literally boost dopamine.
- 4:12When you talk, when you laugh, when you connect with somebody,
- 4:15your brain lights up like you've just taken a micro dose of
- 4:18motivation, right? Isolation does the exact
- 4:21opposite. It shuts those circuits down.
- 4:25So when you push people away, you're not protecting your
- 4:27pride. You're cutting off your brain's
- 4:29chemistry. And believe me, I get it.
- 4:32The first time I asked my son to help me open a jar, it felt like
- 4:36defeat. He looked at me.
- 4:38He smiled and said, you know, Dad, I've been waiting 15 years
- 4:42for this moment. I laughed so hard I forgot to
- 4:45feel embarrassed. And that's when it clicked.
- 4:48Connection is medicine. So here's a challenge right now.
- 4:52If somebody offers to help you today, don't say no out of
- 4:56habit. Say yes.
- 4:57Let them. It doesn't make you weak, but it
- 5:00gives you both a win. You understand what I meant
- 5:02there. Let them do it, but don't do it
- 5:04just because you're just so used to say no.
- 5:06You don't want to just do it because you're going.
- 5:08You want to allow them to do it for you.
- 5:10OK, all right, let's move on to the next one.
- 5:13Now this one I I've actually preached before like we should
- 5:17do this one but the fake it till you make it habit.
- 5:21Now this one's sneaky because it looks like strength.
- 5:24We put on a brave face face. We smile through the tremors and
- 5:27we tell everyone we're fine. I used to tell people I was fine
- 5:30even when my tremor was shaking, shaking the coffee cup so bad it
- 5:35looked like I was holding a maraca.
- 5:36I'd say Nope, I'm good while secretly try not to spill it all
- 5:39over my shirt. That disconnect confused
- 5:43everyone, including me because I started to believe it.
- 5:48Now listen to this. This is the science behind this.
- 5:51When dopamine and serotonin, serotonin circuits are affected,
- 5:55your brain struggles to connect emotion to expression.
- 5:59Let me say it again, when the dopamine and the serotonin
- 6:02circuits are affected, your brain struggles to connect
- 6:05emotion to expression. And that's why we get and what
- 6:09we call facial masking. You might feel happy or angry or
- 6:12scared, but your face doesn't always show it.
- 6:15So people think you're fine. So what that means is you end up
- 6:19feeling invisible. And that is a lonely place to
- 6:23be. And being honest about how
- 6:26you're really feeling doesn't make you a burden.
- 6:29It gives people around you a chance to understand how to show
- 6:32up for you. And with that, it's time for
- 6:36Carmen's care partner corner again.
- 6:39Let Carmen read through kind of what I was going to talk about
- 6:41today. And this is what she had to say.
- 6:43Hey, everyone, it's Carmen. You know, when Bryce talks about
- 6:46pretending to be fine, I have to admit care partners are guilty
- 6:49of that too. We put on a brave face because
- 6:52we don't want to add to the stress.
- 6:54But here's the thing. You can't pour from an empty
- 6:57cup. I have to remind myself of all.
- 7:00I have to remind myself of that all the time.
- 7:02And I tell other care partners the same thing.
- 7:05Saying I'm fine when you're not doesn't protect anyone.
- 7:08It just ignores what's really going on.
- 7:10And it keeps you from getting the help or the rest that you
- 7:12need. Sometimes it's OK to say, no,
- 7:16I'm not fine. And that's not a weakness.
- 7:18That's called communication. And it's a way of saying that I
- 7:22matter too. So if your care partner watching
- 7:25this, here's my challenge to you.
- 7:28Remember how in the last episode we all said, still learning in
- 7:31the comments? Let's keep that going because
- 7:34that's exactly what we're doing here.
- 7:36We're learning that taking care of yourself is taking care of
- 7:39your person. So still learning if you're a
- 7:44care partner out there, still learning, if you agree with all
- 7:46of that, that's what karma says. In that way, it reminds us that
- 7:49we're still learning and we're not perfect.
- 7:51That was really well said. I really like the last part of
- 7:53that, that she said, learning that taking care of yourself is
- 7:57taking care of your person. OK, wow.
- 8:01All right, here we go. We're making our way down to the
- 8:05to the number one. The number one here's #2 right
- 8:08#2 right. I don't need to track it.
- 8:12Oh, I was waiting for this one. Because, you know, if you've
- 8:14been watching, you know, I love tracking stuff.
- 8:16I love stats. I love stats.
- 8:18OK, confession. I used to think I could just
- 8:21feel it out, right? I take my meds whenever things
- 8:23started to feeling off. Sometimes I'd miss a dose
- 8:27because I was too busy and then wonder why I felt like a parked
- 8:30car for half the day. And here's what really is
- 8:33happening. Levodopa's half life is about 90
- 8:36minutes. After that, your dopamine levels
- 8:39start dipping again. If you're late on your meds,
- 8:42you're not just off schedule, you're off balance.
- 8:45Now, in simple terms, if you're not tracking, you're guessing.
- 8:49And guessing with Parkinson's is like guessing the weather
- 8:52without looking outside. So here's what works for me.
- 8:56I set alarms, real alarms, loud ones, not timers, I mean alarms,
- 9:00alarms that will not stop. My phone goes off and I take the
- 9:04pill right then. Well, OK, let me back up.
- 9:08I should take the pill right then if I don't take the pill
- 9:10right then within a couple of minutes, I forget.
- 9:13So I've had to as soon as it goes off no excuses.
- 9:15I have to take that pill no matter what I'm doing.
- 9:18OK, I also use that pill bottle cap timer telling you lifesaver.
- 9:23I just I know I say that a lot, but it oh so amazing sounds Now,
- 9:27all this sounds overboard, but it saved me more times than I
- 9:30can count. Matter of fact, Carmen and I
- 9:32sync our timers so that we're on the exact same time.
- 9:34So if I miss mine, she's got hers.
- 9:37And sometimes the timers stop or the power goes, I don't know,
- 9:41something can go wrong. So there's always good for
- 9:42backup. And that's how I'm that stickler
- 9:45on meds, on time every time, right?
- 9:48And I'll tell you, I'll tell you that that the the days that I
- 9:53actually follow the timing like that, I'm on time, like right on
- 9:57the nose, I'm sharper, I'm calmer and Carmen says I'm less
- 10:00annoying, which is high praise in this house.
- 10:03So if you're guilty of this one type hashtag track my meds in
- 10:08the comments right now. I want to know who's joining me
- 10:11in that club, right? So again, got to track them guys
- 10:14got to, got to, got to, got to you.
- 10:16And that brings us to the final habit.
- 10:19This is the number one habit and the one we're most guilty of
- 10:22that's actually causing us more. It's hidden.
- 10:24We're not even realize we're doing it and it's hurting us.
- 10:27And that's this. I'm fine where I am now.
- 10:33This one's easy to fall into because comfort feels safe.
- 10:36You find your routine, you get used to it, and before you know
- 10:39it, you stop challenging yourself.
- 10:42But here's the catch, your brain's ability to adapt, called
- 10:47neuroplasticity, only activates when you push it right.
- 10:50If you stay too comfortable, your brain basically says your
- 10:53brain, your brain pain, your brain basically says cool, no
- 10:57need to upgrade. For me it was exercise.
- 11:00I used to do the same short walk everyday, same route, same pace,
- 11:04same time. And one day I realized I wasn't
- 11:07getting any stronger. I was just maintaining my
- 11:09comfort zone. So I had to change it up.
- 11:12I tried boxing, I tried other things.
- 11:13And then listen, listen, picture me trying to box the first
- 11:17class. I swung at the air, lost my
- 11:18balance, and I almost punched the mirror instead.
- 11:20That's my life. That's what I do.
- 11:22You know, I heard someone say, nice form.
- 11:23I yelled back for who? But I was stuck with it.
- 11:26And guess what? I just stuck with it.
- 11:27And guess what? My brain loved it.
- 11:30Every new movement, every new challenge, it's like sending a
- 11:33message to your brain saying we're still learning and we're
- 11:36still here. Huh.
- 11:39So if you've been sitting on something that you've been
- 11:42scared to try, maybe a class, maybe a hobby, maybe art, maybe
- 11:47joining a group, maybe jumping in the inner circle or a support
- 11:50group near you, this is your nudge.
- 11:52Do it, do it. You got to push yourself, got to
- 11:56push that brain and you have to, no one's going to do it for you.
- 11:59You have to do it. So in the comments, comfort zone
- 12:03challenge, if you're ready to push yourself, if that's you, if
- 12:06you're saying, OK, you know what?
- 12:07I'm, I know I'm going to push myself.
- 12:09I don't want to do this. I mean, I do, but I don't, you
- 12:11know that feeling. I do, but I don't comfort zone
- 12:15challenge if you're ready to push yourself, right?
- 12:18And so here's what I want you to do right now.
- 12:22Pick one of these five habits. This is a challenge.
- 12:26Pick one of these five habits and commit to breaking it this
- 12:28week, just one of them, right? Go back, Go back in the video,
- 12:32look back at the five different challenges, the five different
- 12:35habits that I've said, See which ones you're doing and give me
- 12:38like a one out of five, two out of five, three out of five,
- 12:40whatever it is. If you can recognize these in
- 12:42your daily life in the comments, one out of five or five out of
- 12:45five, whatever it is that you are actually, you can say, yeah,
- 12:48that's me, right? I want you to break one of them.
- 12:51Just one. Don't, don't try to do well.
- 12:52Five. OK, small steps.
- 12:54Small steps, just one. Then I want you to come back to
- 12:57this video next week and tell me what changed.
- 13:00And to make it fun, tag your challenge in the comments.
- 13:04How about this? Hashtag movement Monday.
- 13:07Hashtag ask for help. Hashtag track my meds.
- 13:10Hashtag real talk or hashtag comfort Zone Challenge.
- 13:15Put it in the comments and then what you did.
- 13:18And then you can actually go to YouTube and we can look for that
- 13:21hashtag. We can just search for the
- 13:23hashtag and you'll see everybody who's in it.
- 13:25So here we go in hashtag Movement Monday.
- 13:27Hashtag ask for help, hashtag track my meds.
- 13:31Hashtag real talk or hashtag comfort zone challenge.
- 13:34Remember, just pick one. Let's fill the comments with
- 13:37momentum, right? And if you're still watching,
- 13:40hit that subscribe button. Subscribe button.
- 13:41Because when you do, you're not just following a channel, you're
- 13:45joining a movement of people who are done being quiet about
- 13:47Parkinson's, done living day by day and ready to take it on.
- 13:51And if you're newly diagnosed, check out the new boot camp.
- 13:55It'll help you get, it'll help you get your footing and make
- 13:58sense of everything. There is only, I think at this,
- 14:01at the time of this airing, at the time of this airing, I think
- 14:04there's 8 spots left and then we're going.
- 14:07And if you're ready to connect with others, join me in the
- 14:09inner circle. That's where we go deeper.
- 14:11That's where the conversation isn't happening.
- 14:13That's where the real Hass happened.
- 14:15That's where the live calls happening this week.
- 14:17If you join today, you get in. We're doing the live call this
- 14:20week now ready for this? You ready for this?
- 14:25What do I call them again? Racism.
- 14:32No, I won't give you that yet. Oh, I will hold on though.
- 14:34With Parkinson's, you can't always control the symptoms, but
- 14:36you can control the story to tell yourself about them.
- 14:39You can choose to move, to speak up, to track, to grow, and to
- 14:43connect. It's all up to you.
- 14:44So here's that. Bryce hasn't even made it this
- 14:46far. Here it is.
- 14:48Small habits might not cure Parkinson's, but they sure as
- 14:51hell can cure the feeling of being stuck.
- 14:54So let's get unstuck. I'm stuck in the comments.
- 14:57And then till next time, keep showing up, keep learning, keep
- 15:00laughing and you keep doing life today.
