- 2:01Keri Croft: Thank you.
- 2:03Keri Croft: I feel like he's like, I think.
- 2:05Keri Croft: Who is this?
- 2:05Keri Croft: Who is this woman that is upon me?
- 2:07Keri Croft: Hi, Penelope.
- 2:09Keri Croft: Oh, wait a minute.
- 2:11Keri Croft: All of a sudden we got a little bit quiet.
- 2:14Keri Croft: But guess what?
- 2:15Keri Croft: I have proof because this has been running for the last 15 minutes to see you.
- 2:19Keri Croft: I think she'll she'll warm up.
- 2:22Keri Croft: And Kim, welcome to the show.
- 2:24Keri Croft: Thank you for having us.
- 2:25Keri Croft: You know, I am just I am honored that you guys have taken time out of your day for little old moi.
- 2:29Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 2:30Keri Croft: Now, Max, do you know what we're doing for cancer-free kids in August?
- 2:33Keri Croft: I'm gonna educate you.
- 2:34Keri Croft: Okay.
- 2:35Keri Croft: So Little Legends Lemonade is a lemonade stand that we've created.
- 2:39Keri Croft: This is our third year that we've been doing this.
- 2:41Keri Croft: So all the little kids get their shirts on, get their entrepreneurial hats on, they're giving hats, and they have fun, and we've done it in front of my house for the last two years.
- 2:51Keri Croft: And now this place called Tupelo Honey on Lane has been kind enough to say, we would like to give you our entire patio on Lane Avenue to raise money for this amazing cause.
- 3:02Keri Croft: Is that exciting?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:04Keri Croft: So I'm gonna ask you this because you're cool.
- 3:05Keri Croft: I'm gonna show this to you.
- 3:06Keri Croft: Do you think I should get this?
- 3:08Keri Croft: I'm going back and forth on whether or not I should buy this for the lemonade stand and have an adult.
- 3:16Keri Croft: I I might have a couple of these, they're not very expensive.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Oh can it be me?
- 3:21Keri Croft: Could you would you do it?
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you'd wear it?
- 3:23Keri Croft: Can I be?
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: I definitely do it.
- 3:24Keri Croft: So these are like adult costumes.
- 3:26Keri Croft: And so what we like to do is we wanna we wanna maximize the idea that we're on Lane Avenue, right?
- 3:32Keri Croft: Because there's a lot of eyeballs, hearts, feet.
- 3:36Keri Croft: There's people everywhere.
- 3:37Keri Croft: And so the more signs we can create and the more ruckus we can create, and you know what that's called?
- 3:42Keri Croft: It's called gorilla marketing.
- 3:43Keri Croft: Oh.
- 3:44Keri Croft: I'm gonna teach you a little business, little business here too.
- 3:46Keri Croft: So the more we make a hot, you know, make a ruckus on Lane, the more somebody who's like driving home from Whole Foods with their organic produce, they'll say, Oh, wait, what is this lemonade stand you speak of?
- 3:57Keri Croft: And we'll say, Well, we're raising five grand in two hours for cancer-free kids.
- 4:01Keri Croft: Stop and give us some money.
- 4:03Keri Croft: Give us some coins.
- 4:06Keri Croft: Do you think that's too lofty of a goal?
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: No.
- 4:08Keri Croft: I think we can do it, don't you?
- 4:10Keri Croft: We got an incredible, I mean, the community always shows up and shows out, right?
- 4:14Keri Croft: And you're gonna you're gonna be a big part of right now helping, you know, helping to get people into their purses, if you will.
- 4:21Keri Croft: So welcome.
- 4:22Keri Croft: What'd you say?
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: I can be a lemon, right?
- 4:24Keri Croft: Uh you can be whatever you want that day.
- 4:25Keri Croft: Are you gonna come?
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:27Keri Croft: Are you guys coming?
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: Good.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: Well, uh, my dad's birthday is the day after, so I wasn't, we're it's the 70th.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_05: But it might be the following weekend.
- 4:38Keri Croft: Tell us a little bit about your story.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Like, what about it though?
- 4:44Keri Croft: Well, okay, Kim, do you want to tee it up?
- 4:46Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 4:47Keri Croft: We'll let your mom we'll let your mom tee it up, and then you can kind of add in, and then I think you'll get to flow after that.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: Well, do you want to start with how old you were?
- 4:55SPEAKER_05: So it was right seven?
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was right before his eighth birthday.
- 4:59SPEAKER_05: Um he was diagnosed with leukemia about two weeks before.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: But we were kind of had like a run-up of not feeling very well and body pain and trying to figure things out.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Because of football.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because of football, we were kind of we kind of thought sports were the problem.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: But he was diagnosed with leukemia uh after a couple tests, thinking it was a bone infection, a bone marrow biopsy, and and all of that.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: So that kicked off two and a half years of treatment.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Some no, but before that, someone said it was just gas.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: It was gas.
- 5:41SPEAKER_05: It was it was a football injury.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 5:44Keri Croft: Well, usually it's you know that you don't jump straight to cancer, you diagnose all the other things that possibly could be.
- 5:50Keri Croft: But what were you feeling at the time?
- 5:51Keri Croft: Were you just feeling tired?
- 5:52Keri Croft: Like what was happening?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Chill.
- 5:56Keri Croft: Chill?
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like laid back.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: So you were but like sitting on the couch a lot, not really doing anything.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Like he was a kid that normally like ran everywhere that he went, you know.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: You couldn't get him to just walk anywhere.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: He was jogging everywhere he went, and then he was he went from that to uh just sitting on the couch all day and watching TV.
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: And well, he didn't start Fortnite until after you got sick, but yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: So he just stopped moving around as much.
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: And then uh and he was just tired.
- 6:32SPEAKER_05: And we were trying to because he he they thought that he like pulled something in his hip.
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: Go ahead, talk.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Well, you have to finish your sentence.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: So he thought something that he pulled something.
- 6:41Keri Croft: I'll tell you what, this age, I'll tell you, I've got a I've got a seven almost eight-year-old who's already starting this stuff with me.
- 6:46Keri Croft: I'm gonna tell you something.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna tell you these kids.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: That's uh he usually is like, Mom, tell dad what happened today.
- 6:55SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, you tell him.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: And he's like, no, you tell him.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: So then I start.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: And then it's like, why can't I tell him?
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's like, Oh, you're not saying it right.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: But uh they thought it was uh he like pulled a muscle, and then we got x-rays and imaging and blood tests, and the blood tests were all fine, um, which really made us not think that it was anything cancer related, and then uh just more pain, more pain.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: And then one morning he sneezed in the shower and just Oh yeah, but that happened again in when I was outside.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and just fell to his knees, like couldn't catch his breath.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: He was in so much pain.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: And then he uh didn't walk on his own after that for another two months because he was just in so much pain.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: He had a small fracture in his spine just from and from the leukemia cells um building up inside of his bones.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and his the inside of one side of his pelvis was like really um there's bits of bone in his marrow just from all of the cells kind of trying to break his bones from the inside.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: So thinking about when I sneezed and hurt my back, whenever I was in school, um like after that, I kept on saying banana so I wouldn't sneeze.
- 8:04Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 8:04Keri Croft: Did it work?
- 8:05Keri Croft: Yeah, yeah, it does.
- 8:07Keri Croft: So when you when you were diagnosed with cancer, did people were people at school like did they were they nice and kind and did they act like were you just feeling weird or were you feeling normal?
- 8:18Keri Croft: Or how did that feel?
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Well, some of my friends were like protecting me, but then some of them were just like treating me like an average kid, and then um there was like this one kid name Oh you don't have to say his name.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: But we'll we'll edit his name.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Um well I just okay, it's just a kid.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: And um he called me um when I was gone in the hospital.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: He called me a little cancer freak because like he I got to skip school.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: That's not very good.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: He was jealous, and then um he got expelled and I didn't I never s I've never seen him again.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't seen him since.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: But your friends kind of uh told him what was up, huh?
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I wasn't there.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd have been lying.
- 9:04Keri Croft: Yeah, your your your crew handled it, put it that way.
- 9:07Keri Croft: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:08Keri Croft: So for you though, as a mom, when you the reality set in, and it's like it's not the 20 other things that we that we thought, and it's this, yeah, and I can't control this for my kid.
- 9:18Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 9:19Keri Croft: What I mean It was just devastating.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: Um I I had a cousin that had a kid that had uh leukemia as well, and I thought that was the last thing that could happen to us because how could it strike twice in one family?
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: Um but it did, and I mean that was kind of naive of me to think that.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: But I just was grieving so much for his childhood, you know, just all of the stuff that the path that we thought we were on.
- 9:48SPEAKER_05: He was uh playing football, he just joined a travel baseball team, and um I just knew that wasn't a possibility anymore.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: And he really loved to play those sports, and I just didn't know what his childhood would look like um in the beginning.
- 10:06SPEAKER_05: But I think we have we've kind of we've come back.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I'm now just remembering how like how much money we spent on like toys.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_05: So it was like try to find any kind of joy you can, but we were really limited on what we we couldn't go out and do things or you know, be in public very much because of his compromised immune system.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: Uh so you know, we were kind of correcting that um, you know, happiness is buying things.
- 10:33Keri Croft: Well, you wanted to you you probably were trying to do everything you could to to take it away, right?
- 10:38Keri Croft: You know, and just try to I I I can only imagine what I would be doing in that scenario.
- 10:42SPEAKER_05: Yep, and you're just he's you know, you're so bored, and then you're and then you're why why us?
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: Why is this happening?
- 10:49SPEAKER_05: And then you're just trying to, yeah, just bring any joy you can into the family.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: And that meant buying things because it wasn't experiences really.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: So and then we also had to bribe him for treatment too.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we had a whole pay whole pay structure.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: My dad said when I got um spinolaps, he'd give me a hundred dollars if I um didn't go under, and then somehow I got him to give me three hundred.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: Oh well, because you're on the table and they're telling you that you have to be still, and you're like, no, no, no, and you're negotiating.
- 11:20SPEAKER_05: You're like, I'll do it for 200.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: No, I negotiated.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: That's a good that's actually you had a lot of leverage.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: I negotiated before I said 300, and then he said sure, and then I said 350, and then he said 300, and I was like, and then and I was like, okay.
- 11:34Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 11:34Keri Croft: Were you so were you so scared when you had to do that?
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: After the first one, not really.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Well, it was I equate the first one and then a few times after that.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: It wasn't like I wasn't really scared, but then after not doing it for a while, yeah.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Kind of got Yeah, have you had a chunk of time in between?
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because you go in the beginning it's like once every week or every ten days.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: Um, but he was under anesthesia for those, and then once it was once a month or once every three months, then he was able to be awake for those just to reduce the amount of anesthesia events.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, because 20 in a couple of months was a lot.
- 12:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I equate trying to talk him into uh getting a spinal tap just be to be ready for it, you know, because you can't be wiggling, they can't hold you down.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and you have to be in like a certain position.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Like a week before my mom always made me sleep, or like whenever I decided to lay down in like where the position I had to be in a spinal tap, which I didn't really understand.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: We were just practicing.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Well, that doesn't make sense.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: Holding your knees in.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: I mean, it might not make sense now, but it didn't, it didn't do anything.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: You don't think it helped?
- 12:43SPEAKER_05: No We tried.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: I mean we do what we can, kid.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: We do what we can.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: I just I equated it to trying to convince him to just jump off a building.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: Like that's what you're you know, he is so nervous and scared.
- 12:57SPEAKER_05: No, but that's what I mean.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: You were just so scared and nervous, and we're trying to calm you down and telling you to do this really scary thing.
- 13:06Keri Croft: Note to everyone Max was not scared, okay?
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: He was not scared at all.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: Nervous, more just nervous.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: They're putting a needle in your spine.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: Mom, you're cooked.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: It makes sense, yeah.
- 13:16Keri Croft: It makes sense that you would be in your pride.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 13:19Keri Croft: Hey Penelope, how did you feel when you found out all this out about your brother?
- 13:25Keri Croft: You can talk.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: No, she thought, she th thought, um, well, it was hard for her because I was getting all the attention.
- 13:34Keri Croft: Let's just come out with the real facts.
- 13:36Keri Croft: Okay, I like that you're giving us the real facts here.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: And then she was kind of sad.
- 13:41unknown: No.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: She didn't ever cry.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: Did she cry?
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: Well, I think in the beginning, she took it.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_05: You're like, you you just think Yeah, she wasn't she didn't get quite the weight of it, but she talked to her teachers a lot.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: She was in first grade and Max was in second.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: So she talked to her teachers a lot, and they uh would always comment just how well she coped with it.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Or no, not before?
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Didn't Luna die or something?
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, that was that summer.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we had a Did I beat cancer before?
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Before that, yeah, before that.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: Our dog.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: We had a dog that passed away.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: And it was Penelope's three Bestie.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: So yeah, she went through a lot.
- 14:30Keri Croft: Stress and inflammation take a toll on your body and your wellness.

- 15:45SPEAKER_05: She did not.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: Where did this that's not what we're here to talk about?
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: You brought Ms.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Clifford up because she gave no wait.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: I'm confused.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: So, but uh we really try to keep Penelope close during everything.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: We had a lot of friends that, you know, they're like offered to have Penelope come stay with them.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: My family, you know, offered Aunt Sabrina.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: She gave her the big seal thing.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: And my sister, you know, said that she could stay with her for a couple of weeks.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: But we thought it was really important to not let her feel like she was on the outside of all of it and just shipped off because we had this really hard thing to do.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: Um, and I know that can't work for everybody, but it really worked for us to just kind of my husband and I took turns in the hospital.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: Shush.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: Took turns in the hospital.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: You know, my husband would stay and I would be home with her, and then we'd uh switch.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, you always used to bring me a cheap.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: But it worked well for us.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: What is it?
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Mac and cheese and I I eat mac and cheese and then I put peas in them.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's uh yeah.
- 16:45Keri Croft: Have you ever eaten mac and cheese with ketchup?
- 16:47Keri Croft: Oh, it's delicious.
- 16:49Keri Croft: You gotta get the box mac and cheese and macaroni because ketchup.
- 16:57Keri Croft: Penelope, what do you eat with ketchup?
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Apples and pizza.
- 17:02Keri Croft: Oh yeah.
- 17:03Keri Croft: So Kim, yes, now that you've gone through this and you understand what Cancer Free Kids does, you know, like maybe talking to someone out there who doesn't have, has never experienced this, yeah, but yet can you know, we would like to compel people not to scroll when they see the word cancer, like child cancer, stay in this, listen to the stories, and like what they're doing is so important because they're getting the early stage, you know, scientific, the this the smart people that are making shit happen.
- 17:33Keri Croft: Oops, I said I said the S-word.
- 17:36Keri Croft: You know, so it's so important, right?
- 17:39Keri Croft: So, but from your perspective, why is it so important?
- 17:41Keri Croft: I just think they're changing the game.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: I think the way to hook them is like it's to say your kid could get cancer.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: Well, that's well, we're not gonna deep.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're not gonna not scare tactics, but I just think I think they're changing the game.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're making a lot of advances and giving a lot more kids a chance to go through treatment successfully and effectively and hopefully more gentler because it was pretty rough on you.
- 18:10SPEAKER_05: Gentler?
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: It is gentle ear.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: It's gentle ear.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Did you get pretty pretty much did you get pretty sick?
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: But then I found a friend named Darius when I was up there.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: In the hospital.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: That made it better?
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: A lot better.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: Did you guys hang out?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: We hung out.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: And they played video games together a lot.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: He lived in West Virginia, so but he was being treated in children's.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: I couldn't.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Um, I was watching.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I used to watch um this like YouTubers member the the son and the son and the dad.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Undoing toys and like and if I laughed it hurt, so we had to turn it off.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: And then I couldn't laugh.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: And then I had to figure out how to laugh again.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you forgot.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: So steroids are just really they're a beast.
- 18:56SPEAKER_05: I I think they're just as rough as chemo.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: Um and they're really hard.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: But they kind of just changed.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: Oh, that wasn't a steroid.
- 19:08SPEAKER_05: That wasn't a steroid.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: That was a mover.
- 19:12unknown: What?
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Don't say anything.
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: Don't say anything more.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: But steroid, anyway, so they just like kind of changed his whole personality.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: They and he didn't laugh for uh like six weeks.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: And then when he seems fine, yeah, now yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: But then when he got off steroids, he tried to laugh for the first time and he had to almost figure out how to do it again.
- 19:37Keri Croft: Show us.
- 19:41Keri Croft: So, Max, in all seriousness, first of all, what would you say to another child right now who's going through cancer, who's where you were, and maybe needs a little word of encouragement or two?
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: You don't know, you have nothing.
- 20:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Or um, oh, you know what um helped me with my um spinal taps?
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Is um I recorded a video of when it was over for my past self so when I could watch it in the future so I wouldn't be scared.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Well, that's a really good idea.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Did you think of that on your own?
- 20:22unknown: No.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Not did you?
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: I can't remember.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: I think because uh it's over, he's like, Oh, that wasn't so bad.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I wasn't so bad because I got like$300.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:34Keri Croft: Well, that makes it a lot better.
- 20:36Keri Croft: That makes it a lot better.
- 20:37Keri Croft: So, how has you know having cancer so young, now that you're the ripe old age of 12?
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: 11.
- 20:44Keri Croft: Eleven.
- 20:46Keri Croft: How's it affected you?
- 20:47Keri Croft: How are you different?
- 20:49Keri Croft: Do you notice anything about yourself in terms of like do you have more perspective?
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I can't run as fast as I used to.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Um, I can't do a lot of things that I used to be able to do.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Is yeah.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: But how do you think that your experience of treat it like beating cancer changed kind of how you look at the world?
- 21:09Keri Croft: Like mentally, do you feel like you have a little more wisdom, a little more perspective than your average 11-year-old?
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 21:17Keri Croft: Like when you see kids whining and complaining about trifling trivial things, are you like kind of like being like that's just having a cold?
- 21:27Keri Croft: People are allowed to have colds and be bummed about it.
- 21:31Keri Croft: No.
- 21:33Keri Croft: Miss Penelope, I think you're gonna be upset if you watch this back and you didn't say one word.
- 21:37Keri Croft: You're gonna be like, why didn't I make a peep?
- 21:39Keri Croft: I didn't say anything.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Panel say, just say, just say um just say I'm a peanut.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: No.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: What you said something?
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: You said something.
- 21:49Keri Croft: All right.
- 21:49Keri Croft: Tell me, okay, so let's move on to something more important.
- 21:52Keri Croft: What's the what's what's hot with music?
- 21:55Keri Croft: Like what do you listen to?
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: My dad's songs.
- 22:00Keri Croft: So what's the name of his Oh Echo Hawk?
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: We should play a song.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: It wouldn't be a copyright.
- 22:04Keri Croft: Hold on.
- 22:05Keri Croft: We're gonna play some.
- 22:06Keri Croft: We're gonna look.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: How do you spell it, Penelope?
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's E K K O Hawk.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: But he's in a rock band.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: He's a singer.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, that's awesome.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: So Max really loves Max and Penelope.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: They both really love his band.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: He can make really funny voices.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: He can.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: He can do Chewbacca.
- 22:23Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 22:24Keri Croft: There's only one, it's only showing one.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: One song?
- 22:28Keri Croft: Oh yeah, this is one.
- 22:29SPEAKER_05: It's a good one.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Is this copyright?
- 22:35unknown: No.
- 22:36Keri Croft: I like these colors.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Is that Neance Guy's guys?
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: He's a really good drawer.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: That's Neance Guys, yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: He could draw a lion with wings very well right now.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Wait, what was this song for?
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: What song?
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Walk-up song or something?
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: His voice is in the thing.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: It's like he does.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: Are you like a groupie?
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: My husband's a rock.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: When I first met him, uh definitely I listened to their album at the time over and over again.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: But they were, when I met him, they were He has a great voice.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: He does.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: What's his name?
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: Brent.
- 23:17Keri Croft: Brent.
- 23:17Keri Croft: Come on in here.
- 23:18Keri Croft: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:19SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: His first name's Jeffrey, but he goes by Brent.
- 23:22Keri Croft: Will he do like an acoustic like something?
- 23:25SPEAKER_05: Well, he doesn't.
- 23:25SPEAKER_05: Well, he, I mean, he can sort of play the guitar and other instruments, but they could do the four of I mean, you know, come on in.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: Or just him and like some acoustic.
- 23:34Keri Croft: Like, yeah, I've done that before.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: They I'm sure they'd love it.
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_05: His uh best friend is a guitar player.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: They've been friends longer than we've known each other.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: Echo come to come in.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Like Josh.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Josh and Terry.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Terry and Derek.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: They practice at our house, so the kids are they're buds.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 23:52Keri Croft: All with all of them.
- 23:53Keri Croft: That's great.
- 23:54Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 23:54Keri Croft: So, Kim, final words for the mom out there going through it.
- 23:58Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 23:58Keri Croft: Feels alone.
- 24:00Keri Croft: Why me?
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:01Keri Croft: Why my family?
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: Um, and it you will get to the other side and you will look back and wonder how in the world, how did you do it?
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: I'm talking.
- 24:15SPEAKER_05: Shh.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: Like, how how did you how'd you make it through?
- 24:18SPEAKER_05: But you just, you just do it.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: You move forward because you have to.
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: I just, you like my family would ask me, like, how are you, how are you doing it?
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: How are you getting through it?
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: And it's just because I have no other choice.
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: You just you push through because you have to.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Shh.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: The really annoying part is when everybody in your family, like everybody else in your family, you're like, oh, they have good blood white blood cells, and they're like, or um, what is it, A and C.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like, and they're like, what is that?
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: Having to just kind of repeat what everything means over and over again.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: But you know, we're really close to it.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: And they're just they're kind of on the yeah, they're on the outside.
- 24:55SPEAKER_05: And she does every once she always asks, he's still in remission, right?
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: I'm like, Mom, yes, since like for the past year, yes, he's been in remission.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: But why is he still getting treatment?
- 25:06SPEAKER_05: I'm like, oh, you know.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: But but anyway, to answer your question, you just push through, you can get to the other side, and uh you know, just hope the best for your family while you're doing it.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: I think the best part of it is make a wish, definitely.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: And be and just try to find as much joy as you possibly can.
- 25:26SPEAKER_05: And because we have definitely had a lot of uh moments of joy through treatment, you know, uh just from the blue jackets and all of the experiences you've gotten with them.
- 25:38SPEAKER_05: Uh make a wish.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: What else?
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: You got to meet Mechie.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: What else?
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: John Mechie and the Texans.
- 25:44SPEAKER_05: You tell me, bro.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: What else?
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, it is gonna be I think that there's been a lot of reasons to celebrate.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: Scot we went to Scotland while I was in treatment.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: That was a lot of joy.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: No, we got like a hundred jelly cats.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Two five, three.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Five.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: She got five.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Three.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: No, I exactly remember.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: She can tell you exactly what ones she got there and where she got them.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, which ones you get.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: So I got the pink lady in Scotland, and then the octopus, and the wiener dog I got in London.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: You got one more.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: You got one more.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Buddy, she can go through all of her jelly cats and tell you where she got them.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: We got three in London, remember?
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: She had two in London.
- 26:29unknown: Okay.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: We got we're not ha we don't have to have conversation, right?
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: And then we got one in Scotland, and then we got three in London.
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, tomato tomato.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: Whatever.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: It doesn't.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Three.
- 26:45unknown: Four.
- 26:46unknown: Four.
- 26:46Keri Croft: What about you?
- 26:47Keri Croft: Are you?
- 26:47Keri Croft: You're talking about Penelope.
- 26:48Keri Croft: Are you a Swifty?
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: What?
- 26:50Keri Croft: Are you a Swifty?
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: No.
- 26:51Keri Croft: Oh.
- 26:52Keri Croft: You wouldn't be, right?
- 26:53Keri Croft: Because your dad's like a rock star.
- 26:54Keri Croft: You're probably more into the.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Hey.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Um, what are you?
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Um I am a human.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: So you're just you're just like um like Pink Pony and Sabrina Carpenter.
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: She kind of pushes away labels.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
- 27:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 27:08SPEAKER_05: Like if she is told to like something, then she kinda immediately turned off.
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: Besides for pushine.
- 27:17Keri Croft: Give me the aside from magazine.
- 27:18Keri Croft: She's a good cat.
- 27:19Keri Croft: She's not a fat cat.
- 27:20Keri Croft: Aside from cooked, fried, toasted, what are all the other?
- 27:24Keri Croft: I need some other before we close this out, I need cool words to use in the streets.
- 27:31Keri Croft: Is mid cap no cap so no cap.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:35Keri Croft: Mid.
- 27:38Keri Croft: Bet.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I use that word.
- 27:40Keri Croft: Bet is still thing?
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:42Keri Croft: What else?
- 27:43Keri Croft: What is it?
- 27:44Keri Croft: Oh yeah.
- 27:45Keri Croft: Buns?
- 27:46Keri Croft: Buns.
- 27:47Keri Croft: When do you say buns?
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: When something's bad?
- 27:50Keri Croft: Really?
- 27:50Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 27:51Keri Croft: That's buns?
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't like my food, so I called that's buns.
- 27:54unknown: Yeah.
- 27:55Keri Croft: That's great.
- 27:56Keri Croft: That's a good one for my back pocket.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:58Keri Croft: Anything else?
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: No.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: I got that W Riz.
- 28:03Keri Croft: What is that?
- 28:04Keri Croft: Yeah.
- 28:04Keri Croft: Oh, you're aura farming too.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, aura farming.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:08Keri Croft: I'm always aura farming, just so you know.
- 28:11Keri Croft: Can we?
- 28:11Keri Croft: Okay, so as we wrap this up, let's let's tell people once again how important it is to come to Lemonade Stand August 2nd from 11 to 1, Tupelo Honey on Lane Avenue.
- 28:20Keri Croft: Hopefully, Max will be there donned in a lemon costume.
- 28:23Keri Croft: If not, we'll have to find somebody else to slap it on.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: You gotta definitely gotta go.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: You'll be seeing me breakdancing or something.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Break dancing.
- 28:30Keri Croft: Do you break dance?
- 28:31unknown: No.
- 28:31unknown: Okay.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I'll learn.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll learn to do it.
- 28:34Keri Croft: Oh my god, Kim.
- 28:35Keri Croft: Thank you for coming in.

- 28:49Keri Croft: Are you done?
