- 1:00:00Marine Biology is
- 1:00:01one of those
- 1:00:02careers where you
- 1:00:03are driven by
- 1:00:04passion. And on
- 1:00:05today's episode
- 1:00:05of the How to
- 1:00:06Protect the Ocean
- 1:00:06podcast, I'm
- 1:00:07going to be
- 1:00:08talking to marine
- 1:00:09biologist Kenzie
- 1:00:10Horton, who is
- 1:00:11here to talk
- 1:00:12about her drive
- 1:00:13and her passion
- 1:00:14and how it's
- 1:00:15become a huge
- 1:00:16part of her life
- 1:00:17and
- 1:00:17demonstrates it
- 1:00:18in her career as
- 1:00:19a marine
- 1:00:20biologist. She
- 1:00:21works for the
- 1:00:22state government
- 1:00:22in Florida. She
- 1:00:24is doing a
- 1:00:24master's
- 1:00:25at the same
- 1:00:25time on white
- 1:00:26sharks. She is
- 1:00:28doing science
- 1:00:28communication on
- 1:00:29TikTok to talk
- 1:00:30about everything
- 1:00:31surrounding marine
- 1:00:32biology and
- 1:00:33busting up those
- 1:00:33myths and giving
- 1:00:34you advice
- 1:00:35of what to
- 1:00:36wear and what not
- 1:00:36to wear while
- 1:00:37you're swimming
- 1:00:37in the ocean.
- 1:00:38I do not wear a
- 1:00:40sequined bikini
- 1:00:41because
- 1:00:41apparently
- 1:00:41that may or
- 1:00:42may not have been
- 1:00:43a thing. But she
- 1:00:44talks about a lot
- 1:00:44of stuff
- 1:00:44on today's
- 1:00:45episode and we're
- 1:00:46gonna find out by
- 1:00:47starting the
- 1:00:47show. Hey,
- 1:00:50everybody,
- 1:00:51welcome back to
- 1:00:51another
- 1:00:51exciting episode
- 1:00:52of the How to
- 1:00:52Protect the Ocean
- 1:00:53podcast. I am
- 1:00:54your host Andrew
- 1:00:54Lewin. And this
- 1:00:55is the podcast
- 1:00:56where you find
- 1:00:56out what's
- 1:00:56happening with
- 1:00:57the ocean, how
- 1:00:57you can speak up
- 1:00:58for the ocean,
- 1:00:58what you can do
- 1:00:59to live for a
- 1:01:00better ocean by
- 1:01:01taking action.
- 1:01:03I've got a very
- 1:01:03special guest
- 1:01:04today, Kenzie
- 1:01:05Horton, who is a
- 1:01:06marine biologist.
- 1:01:07I feel like
- 1:01:07she's, you know,
- 1:01:08she's been in the
- 1:01:09career for a
- 1:01:09while. She's been
- 1:01:10in the field for
- 1:01:11a while. And
- 1:01:12she's here to
- 1:01:12talk about her
- 1:01:13experience of how
- 1:01:14she got a job
- 1:01:15coming out of
- 1:01:16universities, the
- 1:01:16struggles that
- 1:01:17she had. But
- 1:01:18she's also here
- 1:01:18to talk about the
- 1:01:19passion that she
- 1:01:20has for marine
- 1:01:21biology, how she
- 1:01:22likes to educate
- 1:01:22people through
- 1:01:23science
- 1:01:23communication,
- 1:01:24how she's doing a
- 1:01:25master's and she
- 1:01:26wants to pursue
- 1:01:27academia, which
- 1:01:28she don't see a lot of people.
- 1:01:29A lot of people
- 1:01:29doing these days,
- 1:01:30but doing a PhD,
- 1:01:31becoming
- 1:01:32professor
- 1:01:32teaching,
- 1:01:33becoming an
- 1:01:34educator, it's
- 1:01:35all here. You
- 1:01:36have everything
- 1:01:36you need in, you
- 1:01:38know, what to
- 1:01:38know about a
- 1:01:39marine biologist.
- 1:01:40Kenzie is that
- 1:01:41formula and it is
- 1:01:42fun to learn her
- 1:01:44story, even
- 1:01:45stretching from
- 1:01:46her inspiration
- 1:01:47of her
- 1:01:47grandfather and
- 1:01:48his legacy and
- 1:01:50how that's come
- 1:01:50out in her
- 1:01:51passion for
- 1:01:52marine biology.
- 1:01:52It is a great
- 1:01:53episode. I can't
- 1:01:54wait for you to
- 1:01:55see the
- 1:01:55interview. So
- 1:01:55here's the
- 1:01:56interview with
- 1:01:56Kenzie Horton
- 1:01:57talking about her
- 1:01:58career in marine
- 1:01:58biology.
- 1:01:58She's a great person to talk about science
- 1:01:59communication and
- 1:02:00doing a master's.
- 1:02:01She is amazing.
- 1:02:02You're going to
- 1:02:03love the
- 1:02:03interview. Enjoy
- 1:02:04and I will talk
- 1:02:05to you after.
- 1:02:05Hey, Kenzie.
- 1:02:06Welcome to the
- 1:02:07how to protect
- 1:02:07the ocean
- 1:02:08podcast. Are you
- 1:02:09ready to talk
- 1:02:09about the ocean?
- 1:02:10Yes, I'm really
- 1:02:11excited. Thank
- 1:02:12you for having
- 1:02:12me. No problem. I
- 1:02:14am very excited
- 1:02:15as well. I've
- 1:02:16been you've been
- 1:02:16on the bucket
- 1:02:17list for the
- 1:02:18podcast for quite
- 1:02:18some time since I
- 1:02:19discovered you on
- 1:02:20TikTok in your
- 1:02:21videos. It's been a real treat to get to know you through through TikTok. But now we're really going to get to know each other through this through this podcast. And I'm very, very excited. Thank you for having me.
- 1:02:28I'm very excited
- 1:02:29because I get I
- 1:02:29want the audience
- 1:02:30to know who you
- 1:02:31are as well.
- 1:02:32Hopefully they'll
- 1:02:32follow you on on
- 1:02:33TikTok as well.
- 1:02:34And we get to see
- 1:02:36what you're doing
- 1:02:36on those videos
- 1:02:38talking about
- 1:02:38sharks talking
- 1:02:39about the ocean,
- 1:02:40making sure
- 1:02:40people are doing
- 1:02:41the right things
- 1:02:42when they swim
- 1:02:42and wearing the
- 1:02:43right things when
- 1:02:43they swim. We'll
- 1:02:44talk about that
- 1:02:44in a second as
- 1:02:45well. But it's
- 1:02:47going to be a lot
- 1:02:47of fun. I'm
- 1:02:47looking forward
- 1:02:48to it and really
- 1:02:49talking about,
- 1:02:50you know, the
- 1:02:51science
- 1:02:51communication
- 1:02:52that you're
- 1:02:52doing. But also
- 1:02:53you're doing
- 1:02:54something really
- 1:02:54special and it
- 1:02:55doesn't happen
- 1:02:56often. You're
- 1:02:57working
- 1:02:57full time in.
- 1:02:58You know, the
- 1:02:59field of marine
- 1:03:00biology, but
- 1:03:01you're also doing
- 1:03:02graduate work in
- 1:03:04the field of
- 1:03:05marine biology at
- 1:03:06the same time. I
- 1:03:07don't know how
- 1:03:08you do it. We're
- 1:03:08going to find out
- 1:03:09today. I can't
- 1:03:10wait before we
- 1:03:11do. I want you to
- 1:03:12let the audience
- 1:03:12know who you are
- 1:03:13and what you do.
- 1:03:15Awesome. Yeah. So
- 1:03:15my name is Kenzie
- 1:03:16Horton. I'm a
- 1:03:17fisheries
- 1:03:17biologist with
- 1:03:18the Florida Fish
- 1:03:18and Wildlife
- 1:03:19Conservation
- 1:03:20Commission in
- 1:03:20Florida. But I
- 1:03:21also am a full
- 1:03:23time grad student
- 1:03:23at Jacksonville
- 1:03:24University where
- 1:03:25I studied the
- 1:03:25movements of
- 1:03:26white sharks in
- 1:03:27their
- 1:03:27overwintering
- 1:03:27residency phase
- 1:03:28in the
- 1:03:29Carolinas region.
- 1:03:30So full time work
- 1:03:32with fisheries
- 1:03:32biologists with
- 1:03:34the state agency
- 1:03:35as well as full
- 1:03:36time work with
- 1:03:37Jackson
- 1:03:37University. But
- 1:03:39it's really
- 1:03:39unique because
- 1:03:39the FWC office
- 1:03:40that I work in is
- 1:03:41actually in the
- 1:03:42marine science
- 1:03:43research
- 1:03:43Institute on
- 1:03:44Jay's campus. So
- 1:03:45everything is in
- 1:03:46one building.
- 1:03:46You have hit the
- 1:03:49perfect note
- 1:03:50there because
- 1:03:50that is like
- 1:03:51you're able to do
- 1:03:52the work and do
- 1:03:53your masters at
- 1:03:54the same time,
- 1:03:54which I love. I
- 1:03:55think that that's
- 1:03:56that's how you
- 1:03:57have to marry it.
- 1:03:57Right. And we'll
- 1:03:58get into that a
- 1:03:58little bit more.
- 1:03:59But that's really
- 1:04:00the key so that
- 1:04:01you don't go
- 1:04:02crazy. You know
- 1:04:03what I mean? Like
- 1:04:04doing two
- 1:04:04separate projects
- 1:04:05is is going to be
- 1:04:06very difficult.
- 1:04:07Having this. I
- 1:04:08think that's
- 1:04:08that's wonderful.
- 1:04:09We're going to
- 1:04:09dive into that. I
- 1:04:10want to get to
- 1:04:10know you a little
- 1:04:11bit more. You
- 1:04:12know, we all all
- 1:04:13marine biologists
- 1:04:13have a story of
- 1:04:14how we got into
- 1:04:15to marine biology.
- 1:04:15I want to hear
- 1:04:17your story. I
- 1:04:18want the audience
- 1:04:18to hear your
- 1:04:18story because
- 1:04:19I've read a
- 1:04:20little bit about
- 1:04:20it. It's quite
- 1:04:21quite special.
- 1:04:23Can you just talk
- 1:04:23about how you got
- 1:04:24interested? Like
- 1:04:25what was that
- 1:04:26factor that made
- 1:04:27you interested in
- 1:04:28the ocean?
- 1:04:29Yeah. So I
- 1:04:30mentioned I'm in
- 1:04:31Florida right
- 1:04:31now, but I was
- 1:04:32born and raised
- 1:04:32in Florida. I
- 1:04:33grew up in
- 1:04:33Orlando, so
- 1:04:34central Florida.
- 1:04:35But every year my
- 1:04:36parents and I
- 1:04:36would take a
- 1:04:37family vacation
- 1:04:38down to Key West
- 1:04:38and we'd always
- 1:04:39go snorkeling.
- 1:04:41And I fell in
- 1:04:42love with every
- 1:04:42all the fish and
- 1:04:43everything in the
- 1:04:44reefs. And it was right when I was in Florida.
- 1:04:44And it was right
- 1:04:45when underwater
- 1:04:46disposable
- 1:04:47cameras were
- 1:04:48becoming popular.
- 1:04:50And so I saved my
- 1:04:52allowance when I
- 1:04:52had this little
- 1:04:53piggy bank all
- 1:04:53year. I find
- 1:04:54change in the
- 1:04:55couch for my my
- 1:04:56dad's you know
- 1:04:57that you'd sit
- 1:04:57down and his
- 1:04:58change would fall
- 1:04:59to the couch and
- 1:04:59I get all those
- 1:05:00change. And then
- 1:05:01I would go and I
- 1:05:02would get my
- 1:05:02money for it. And
- 1:05:03that'd be my
- 1:05:03allowance money
- 1:05:04for this trip.
- 1:05:05And I bought a
- 1:05:07fish
- 1:05:07identification
- 1:05:08book to take down
- 1:05:09with me and I was
- 1:05:09so excited. And
- 1:05:10so I spent the
- 1:05:12entire eight hour
- 1:05:13drive reading
- 1:05:14through this
- 1:05:14book, you know,
- 1:05:15not understanding
- 1:05:15some of it, but
- 1:05:16then I was very
- 1:05:16young. So half
- 1:05:17the words I was
- 1:05:18were jargon to
- 1:05:19me, but I was
- 1:05:20looking at the
- 1:05:21pretty pictures
- 1:05:21and trying to
- 1:05:22learn as much as
- 1:05:22I could.
- 1:05:23And when we were
- 1:05:24down there, I
- 1:05:25started taking
- 1:05:26pictures of all
- 1:05:27these fish and
- 1:05:28playing the
- 1:05:28matching game in
- 1:05:29this fish ID
- 1:05:30book. And I just
- 1:05:32became so in love
- 1:05:33with just trying
- 1:05:33to figure out
- 1:05:34what they were.
- 1:05:34And I would read
- 1:05:35every bit of
- 1:05:36information I
- 1:05:37could understand
- 1:05:37about these fish.
- 1:05:38And then I would
- 1:05:38go and tell my
- 1:05:39parents about it.
- 1:05:39And then we would
- 1:05:40go out snorkeling
- 1:05:41and I would come
- 1:05:42up to the surface
- 1:05:42and I'd be like,
- 1:05:43Hey, did you see
- 1:05:44that blue
- 1:05:44parrotfish? You
- 1:05:45know, blue
- 1:05:45parrotfish, you
- 1:05:46know, eats, you
- 1:05:47know, you know,
- 1:05:48you can hear it.
- 1:05:48It has a beak and
- 1:05:49it's eating, you
- 1:05:50know, organisms
- 1:05:50off the coral.
- 1:05:51I would I would
- 1:05:52just go into
- 1:05:53these spules as a
- 1:05:54kid talking
- 1:05:55about, you know,
- 1:05:56all the different
- 1:05:57fish I was
- 1:05:57seeing. And I
- 1:05:58subconsciously at
- 1:05:59that age kind of
- 1:06:00knew that was
- 1:06:01going to be my
- 1:06:01progression. I
- 1:06:03think my parents
- 1:06:03really knew that
- 1:06:04that was what the
- 1:06:05rest of my life
- 1:06:06was going
- 1:06:06to look like.
- 1:06:06And I kind of
- 1:06:09like point it
- 1:06:11probably started
- 1:06:11at like four or
- 1:06:12five and went up
- 1:06:14to like, I mean,
- 1:06:14I mean, yeah, it
- 1:06:17was we went every
- 1:06:19year and every
- 1:06:19year I would
- 1:06:20learn something
- 1:06:20new and I would
- 1:06:21find new fish.
- 1:06:22And, you know,
- 1:06:23there we went to
- 1:06:23the dry tour to
- 1:06:24guess and I'll
- 1:06:24never forget. I
- 1:06:25actually have a
- 1:06:25couple of
- 1:06:26hogfish. So
- 1:06:26hogfish have
- 1:06:27become one of my
- 1:06:27favorite fish
- 1:06:28because of this
- 1:06:28one moment.
- 1:06:28I dove down and
- 1:06:31it was sitting
- 1:06:32there and it
- 1:06:32opened and they
- 1:06:33had a very large
- 1:06:34mouth and it
- 1:06:34freaked me out
- 1:06:35for a second when
- 1:06:36I was a kid.
- 1:06:36So I swam to the
- 1:06:37surface and I was
- 1:06:38panicking. My mom
- 1:06:38was panicking.
- 1:06:39She couldn't
- 1:06:39figure out what
- 1:06:40was going on. And
- 1:06:40I tried to tell
- 1:06:41her this fish
- 1:06:41yawned at me and
- 1:06:42had these giant
- 1:06:43teeth and they
- 1:06:44had two, you
- 1:06:45know, giant
- 1:06:45canines by the
- 1:06:46time I didn't know.
- 1:06:47And so we get
- 1:06:49back, you know,
- 1:06:50back to the hotel
- 1:06:51and I'm flipping
- 1:06:52through the book
- 1:06:52trying to find
- 1:06:52this fish and
- 1:06:53she's like, no,
- 1:06:54no, it doesn't
- 1:06:54have any teeth.
- 1:06:55It's you know,
- 1:06:56but don't worry
- 1:06:56about it.
- 1:06:57And she was just
- 1:06:57trying to calm me
- 1:06:58down. She knew
- 1:06:59what it was, but
- 1:06:59she was trying to
- 1:07:00calm me down. She
- 1:07:01was like, don't
- 1:07:02worry. And then I
- 1:07:03find it and I
- 1:07:04said, you know,
- 1:07:04too large
- 1:07:05canines.
- 1:07:05I'm pointing to
- 1:07:06the book and I'm
- 1:07:06like, see, they
- 1:07:09have teeth. I'm
- 1:07:10not crazy. Yeah.
- 1:07:12Yeah. So I mean,
- 1:07:14I did that for so many years.
- 1:07:16And, you know,
- 1:07:18not realizing
- 1:07:18that my life
- 1:07:19would end up
- 1:07:20being just that.
- 1:07:22And and another
- 1:07:24part was like I
- 1:07:25was really I
- 1:07:26always love, you
- 1:07:27know, the movies
- 1:07:28like the
- 1:07:29Living Seas.
- 1:07:30That was I was
- 1:07:31mesmerized by
- 1:07:32that. I was it
- 1:07:33talked about all
- 1:07:33these different
- 1:07:34aspects of the
- 1:07:35marine science
- 1:07:36world and it, you
- 1:07:36know, explore,
- 1:07:37you know, more
- 1:07:39uncharted areas.
- 1:07:39And I just
- 1:07:40remember I would
- 1:07:41watch that and I,
- 1:07:42you know, the
- 1:07:42sting soundtrack,
- 1:07:43you know, even to
- 1:07:44this day, I'll
- 1:07:45listen to that
- 1:07:45song fragile by
- 1:07:46sting. And I'm
- 1:07:47like transported
- 1:07:48back to being a
- 1:07:49kid sitting in
- 1:07:49front of the TV
- 1:07:50watching this.
- 1:07:51So I was
- 1:07:52influenced by so
- 1:07:53many different
- 1:07:53things. And one
- 1:07:54of that's really
- 1:07:55deeply connected
- 1:07:56to me is my
- 1:07:57grandfather. I
- 1:07:59think I mentioned
- 1:07:59this briefly in
- 1:08:00our in my email
- 1:08:01to you. Yes.
- 1:08:01But my
- 1:08:03grandfather was a
- 1:08:04submariner with
- 1:08:04the US Navy. They
- 1:08:06were coming back
- 1:08:07from the
- 1:08:07Mediterranean and
- 1:08:08the Navy lost
- 1:08:09communication
- 1:08:10with them.
- 1:08:10They're about a
- 1:08:11day out of
- 1:08:12Norfolk. They're
- 1:08:12about 100 miles, I think,
- 1:08:14southwest of
- 1:08:15the Azores.
- 1:08:16And it was on May
- 1:08:1722nd and they
- 1:08:19lost all
- 1:08:19communication.
- 1:08:20And it wasn't
- 1:08:20until about a
- 1:08:21week later that
- 1:08:22they were
- 1:08:22officially
- 1:08:23announced lost at
- 1:08:24sea. My mother
- 1:08:26was two years
- 1:08:27old. My uncle was
- 1:08:28five. So my
- 1:08:29grandmother had
- 1:08:30two very young children.
- 1:08:30Yeah. And so it
- 1:08:33was very hard for
- 1:08:34her. And she
- 1:08:34never remarried.
- 1:08:35She always wore
- 1:08:36her wedding ring.
- 1:08:38But she always
- 1:08:38talked so fondly
- 1:08:39about him. And I
- 1:08:40know, like, we've
- 1:08:40always stayed
- 1:08:41connected through
- 1:08:42memorial groups
- 1:08:43through with the
- 1:08:44scorpion. That
- 1:08:45was the sub that he was on.
- 1:08:45And she'd always
- 1:08:49tell me stories
- 1:08:50growing up of how
- 1:08:51much he loved the
- 1:08:52sea and he loved
- 1:08:53history. And he
- 1:08:54was planning this
- 1:08:55sailing trip
- 1:08:56around the world.
- 1:08:57And he had these
- 1:08:58maps and he was
- 1:08:58chartering it. He
- 1:08:59had a sex that he
- 1:09:00was learning how
- 1:09:01to navigate using
- 1:09:02the stars. I
- 1:09:04actually still
- 1:09:04have. I actually
- 1:09:05have his the sex
- 1:09:06that he used. He
- 1:09:07was trying to
- 1:09:08learn on.
- 1:09:09And she always
- 1:09:12told me that I
- 1:09:13had his spirit.
- 1:09:14She's always said
- 1:09:15that I feel like
- 1:09:15I'm talking to
- 1:09:16George again.
- 1:09:17She's like, when
- 1:09:18I talk to you and
- 1:09:18I see how you
- 1:09:20light up when you
- 1:09:21talk about the
- 1:09:21ocean and you're
- 1:09:22talking about
- 1:09:22these fish, she's
- 1:09:23like, I see him
- 1:09:23through you. And
- 1:09:24so that growing
- 1:09:26up and not
- 1:09:27knowing this
- 1:09:27person and
- 1:09:28knowing that I
- 1:09:29would have loved
- 1:09:29this person, we
- 1:09:30would have been
- 1:09:30two peas in a
- 1:09:31pod, but just
- 1:09:32still feeling
- 1:09:32connected to
- 1:09:33someone I've
- 1:09:33never met.
- 1:09:35But because we
- 1:09:36shared so many
- 1:09:37similar interests
- 1:09:38and loves for the
- 1:09:39ocean and
- 1:09:39learning and
- 1:09:40history and just
- 1:09:41being surrounded
- 1:09:42by the ocean. So
- 1:09:43I think with all
- 1:09:45those factors of
- 1:09:46just growing up
- 1:09:47and being
- 1:09:47surrounded by the
- 1:09:48ocean and the sea
- 1:09:49and learning, my
- 1:09:51natural
- 1:09:51progression into
- 1:09:52marine science
- 1:09:52was just always
- 1:09:54going to be
- 1:09:54there. And I knew
- 1:09:55that that was my
- 1:09:56passion. You
- 1:09:57know, I always
- 1:09:58say, you know,
- 1:09:59you never work a
- 1:10:00day in your life
- 1:10:00if you truly love
- 1:10:01what you do. And
- 1:10:02I truly
- 1:10:03love what I do.
- 1:10:03I do every day.
- 1:10:05You know, there
- 1:10:05are days when
- 1:10:06I've been in the
- 1:10:06mud and I'm
- 1:10:08looking at myself
- 1:10:08going, what am I
- 1:10:09doing? Why am I
- 1:10:12here? But then
- 1:10:13there are days
- 1:10:14I'm not at sea
- 1:10:14and I've been out
- 1:10:16for days on end
- 1:10:17and it's a
- 1:10:17beautiful sunset.
- 1:10:19And I'm just
- 1:10:20sitting there
- 1:10:21looking out and
- 1:10:21I'm 100 miles
- 1:10:22offshore and the
- 1:10:24stars come out at
- 1:10:25night. And I'm
- 1:10:25like, wow, this
- 1:10:26is my job. I am
- 1:10:28getting paid to
- 1:10:29do what people
- 1:10:30pay to do.
- 1:10:30And I get to see
- 1:10:32things that
- 1:10:33people don't
- 1:10:33normally get to
- 1:10:34see or interact
- 1:10:35with animals that
- 1:10:36you don't
- 1:10:36normally get to
- 1:10:37interact with. So
- 1:10:38that's just kind
- 1:10:40of how my life
- 1:10:41has led me up
- 1:10:42into this point.
- 1:10:43So I think I'm
- 1:10:44very fortunate in
- 1:10:45that. But that's
- 1:10:46kind of my story.
- 1:10:47And I feel like
- 1:10:48that's why
- 1:10:49I'm here.
- 1:10:49Well, I love and
- 1:10:51I love it. I love
- 1:10:51you can obviously
- 1:10:52see the passion,
- 1:10:53you know, through
- 1:10:54just the story
- 1:10:55that you told it.
- 1:10:57It's it's
- 1:10:57amazing. It's
- 1:10:58shared by a lot
- 1:10:59of marine
- 1:10:59biologists like
- 1:11:00who get to the
- 1:11:01point where
- 1:11:01you're at, which
- 1:11:02is not easy.
- 1:11:03Let's be honest.
- 1:11:04It's not an easy
- 1:11:05road. You know,
- 1:11:06we talk about
- 1:11:07passion. We talk
- 1:11:07about how that
- 1:11:08takes you. And it
- 1:11:09does take you
- 1:11:09far. It does take
- 1:11:10you through the
- 1:11:11hard times. It
- 1:11:12does take you
- 1:11:12through the
- 1:11:12nicest studying
- 1:11:13the staying up
- 1:11:14late. The long
- 1:11:15days at sea.
- 1:11:16Those are never
- 1:11:16easy. You know,
- 1:11:17sometimes the sea works with you.
- 1:11:18And sometimes it
- 1:11:20works against you
- 1:11:21and it can be
- 1:11:22dangerous and you
- 1:11:23know, you have to
- 1:11:24be careful. And
- 1:11:24so there's a lot
- 1:11:25of things that go
- 1:11:27with the job,
- 1:11:27like any job
- 1:11:28where there's
- 1:11:28some good days
- 1:11:29and some bad days
- 1:11:30and so forth. But
- 1:11:31to get to where
- 1:11:32you are, like I
- 1:11:34mentioned before,
- 1:11:34is not easy. You
- 1:11:35know, the
- 1:11:36schooling is can
- 1:11:37be difficult.
- 1:11:37Just getting in
- 1:11:38to university in college can be difficult.
- 1:11:40Going through
- 1:11:43college, you
- 1:11:44know, in a marine
- 1:11:45biology program
- 1:11:46is difficult,
- 1:11:47right? Getting
- 1:11:47that job
- 1:11:48afterwards is not
- 1:11:49easy. You know,
- 1:11:50you have to be
- 1:11:51vigilant. You
- 1:11:52have to be
- 1:11:53connected. You
- 1:11:54know, you have to
- 1:11:54have a network. I
- 1:11:55talk about this
- 1:11:56all the time. Was
- 1:11:58there any knowing
- 1:11:59since you were
- 1:12:00like four or five that you had this passion in you?
- 1:12:01I had it when I
- 1:12:04was 14. You know,
- 1:12:05that's when I
- 1:12:06realized like I
- 1:12:06want to be marine
- 1:12:07biologist. Were
- 1:12:08there any points
- 1:12:10in that time
- 1:12:11where you
- 1:12:12wavered, you
- 1:12:13know, once you
- 1:12:14discovered that,
- 1:12:14hey, well, I
- 1:12:15guess the first
- 1:12:15thing when did
- 1:12:16you discover that
- 1:12:16you could do this
- 1:12:17for a living and
- 1:12:18get paid to do
- 1:12:18this? And then
- 1:12:20were there any
- 1:12:20those at any
- 1:12:21point in time
- 1:12:22during schooling,
- 1:12:23whether it be
- 1:12:23high school,
- 1:12:24whether it be
- 1:12:24university that
- 1:12:25you struggled at
- 1:12:26and you were
- 1:12:27like, maybe this isn't for me.
- 1:12:28I would say there
- 1:12:32was never a time
- 1:12:33that I was like,
- 1:12:33this is not for
- 1:12:34me, but there
- 1:12:35were times where
- 1:12:36I thought, can I
- 1:12:37really do this?
- 1:12:38You know, and I
- 1:12:38found out early
- 1:12:39on is my parents,
- 1:12:40you know, they
- 1:12:41were my, you
- 1:12:41know, my dad was
- 1:12:42in the Navy. So
- 1:12:42my parents grew
- 1:12:44up around the
- 1:12:45ocean. So they I
- 1:12:46knew that jobs in
- 1:12:47the marine world
- 1:12:48were there. I
- 1:12:50didn't know how
- 1:12:50many I didn't
- 1:12:51learn about how
- 1:12:53vast the industry
- 1:12:54really is. You
- 1:12:55know, you always
- 1:12:55think about a
- 1:12:56dolphin trainer
- 1:12:56or, you know, being a dolphin trainer.
- 1:12:57Or, you know,
- 1:12:57being working in
- 1:12:58aquarium, which
- 1:12:59are amazing
- 1:12:59positions, but
- 1:13:01those the only
- 1:13:02two that when you
- 1:13:03grow up that you
- 1:13:03think of and they
- 1:13:04don't they don't
- 1:13:05tell you all the
- 1:13:06small, you know,
- 1:13:07that you could be
- 1:13:07working with just
- 1:13:08plankton, you'd
- 1:13:09be working with
- 1:13:09mollus. You could
- 1:13:10go into the
- 1:13:11private sector,
- 1:13:12you could be an
- 1:13:12academia. There's
- 1:13:13so many things
- 1:13:14that you just
- 1:13:14aren't aware of
- 1:13:15unless you are
- 1:13:16exposed to that.
- 1:13:17And that usually
- 1:13:17happens in
- 1:13:18university. So I
- 1:13:20didn't know about
- 1:13:21options in the
- 1:13:22marine science
- 1:13:22world until high
- 1:13:23school and into
- 1:13:24university.
- 1:13:24But I will say
- 1:13:26that I have had
- 1:13:28many people, not
- 1:13:29necessarily
- 1:13:30family, just
- 1:13:30people that were
- 1:13:31outside or I
- 1:13:32would talk to
- 1:13:33them about like
- 1:13:34my jobs or even
- 1:13:34people in college
- 1:13:35and in some in
- 1:13:37high school and I
- 1:13:37would be like,
- 1:13:38Yeah, I really
- 1:13:38want to be a
- 1:13:39marine biologist
- 1:13:39and they go, so
- 1:13:40does everyone
- 1:13:41else find
- 1:13:42something else.
- 1:13:42You know, it's
- 1:13:44every nineties
- 1:13:45child, you know,
- 1:13:47dream with your
- 1:13:47Lisa Frank
- 1:13:48dolphin folders,
- 1:13:50you know,
- 1:13:51everyone wants to
- 1:13:53be a marine
- 1:13:53biologist. And
- 1:13:54and so I think a
- 1:13:55lot of people
- 1:13:56didn't realize
- 1:13:57that, you know,
- 1:13:57didn't really
- 1:13:58know my backstory
- 1:13:59and just how I
- 1:14:00grew up.
- 1:14:00You know, that
- 1:14:02was what everyone
- 1:14:02wanted to do as a
- 1:14:03kid, and
- 1:14:04especially in
- 1:14:05Florida. So, so I
- 1:14:08think hearing
- 1:14:08that early on
- 1:14:11wasn't too bad,
- 1:14:12but it was really
- 1:14:12when I got into
- 1:14:13university when I
- 1:14:14had some people
- 1:14:14that I, you know,
- 1:14:17were, were in
- 1:14:17the, you know,
- 1:14:18professors and
- 1:14:18they would be
- 1:14:18like, kind of
- 1:14:19warning you
- 1:14:20against it
- 1:14:20because it
- 1:14:21doesn't pay all that well.
- 1:14:22I mean, the main
- 1:14:24thing is marine,
- 1:14:25marine science is
- 1:14:26usually
- 1:14:26underfunded.
- 1:14:27You're always
- 1:14:28applying for
- 1:14:29grants. You're
- 1:14:29always trying to
- 1:14:30find funding. And
- 1:14:31so finding stable
- 1:14:32funds and stable
- 1:14:33grants,
- 1:14:34especially in
- 1:14:34academia is very difficult.
- 1:14:35So they always
- 1:14:39worry about that,
- 1:14:40like, Hey, you
- 1:14:40might not have
- 1:14:41an, you know, if
- 1:14:42you go into
- 1:14:42finance, if you
- 1:14:43go into business,
- 1:14:44you go into, you
- 1:14:45know, marketing
- 1:14:45accounting,
- 1:14:46you're going to
- 1:14:46have a salary,
- 1:14:48you're going to
- 1:14:48have a set
- 1:14:48paycheck, you
- 1:14:49know, you know,
- 1:14:50no matter what,
- 1:14:51nothing is
- 1:14:52necessarily
- 1:14:52changing per se.
- 1:14:53But in marine
- 1:14:54science,
- 1:14:55depending on what
- 1:14:56sector you're in,
- 1:14:58you know, you're
- 1:14:58kind of reliant
- 1:15:00on your grants,
- 1:15:01you're reliant on
- 1:15:01the funding
- 1:15:02coming in. And so
- 1:15:03there is that
- 1:15:04level of
- 1:15:05uncertainty is,
- 1:15:06you know, am I
- 1:15:08going to have
- 1:15:08money in a year?
- 1:15:09You know, is this
- 1:15:09project going to
- 1:15:10be funded in the
- 1:15:11next few years?
- 1:15:11Like, yeah, right
- 1:15:12now, it's great.
- 1:15:13But when I have,
- 1:15:13when it's up and
- 1:15:14I need to
- 1:15:14reapply, is it
- 1:15:15going to be as
- 1:15:16readily
- 1:15:17available? So
- 1:15:17those are the
- 1:15:18things I think
- 1:15:19people will
- 1:15:19warning me about
- 1:15:20that you don't,
- 1:15:21again, truly know
- 1:15:21until you're
- 1:15:22really in it.
- 1:15:22But there was a
- 1:15:24few times where I
- 1:15:25was, I would say,
- 1:15:26like, discourage
- 1:15:26where I was like,
- 1:15:27I'm a little
- 1:15:28nervous. But
- 1:15:31there's a few
- 1:15:32times that people
- 1:15:32will be like,
- 1:15:33especially with
- 1:15:33shark biology,
- 1:15:34everyone wants to
- 1:15:34work for sharks.
- 1:15:35They are the
- 1:15:36charismatic
- 1:15:37megafauna, you
- 1:15:38know, especially
- 1:15:38with all the TV
- 1:15:39shows, they, they
- 1:15:41get all you know,
- 1:15:42they're the
- 1:15:44shiny, the, you
- 1:15:45know, the
- 1:15:45impressive
- 1:15:45things, which
- 1:15:46they are, but
- 1:15:47everyone wants to
- 1:15:48do it. And so as
- 1:15:49you move through
- 1:15:50the field, you
- 1:15:50get people that
- 1:15:51are like, find backup plans.
- 1:15:51You know, and,
- 1:15:53and, you know,
- 1:15:54everyone that I,
- 1:15:55you know, on your
- 1:15:55other podcast,
- 1:15:56like the Beyond
- 1:15:56Jaws one, you
- 1:15:57know, everyone's
- 1:15:58always like, my
- 1:15:59path to sharks
- 1:16:00was never a
- 1:16:01direct line. And
- 1:16:02there may be a
- 1:16:02handful. There's
- 1:16:03always the few
- 1:16:04that just were
- 1:16:05able to, to do
- 1:16:06it. But it's
- 1:16:07usually some
- 1:16:07windy road. And
- 1:16:10so I think a lot
- 1:16:10of people were
- 1:16:11trying to tell me
- 1:16:12that and, you
- 1:16:12know, when you're
- 1:16:13early on in your
- 1:16:13career, you
- 1:16:14think, well, if I
- 1:16:15want to work for
- 1:16:15sharks,
- 1:16:16everything has to
- 1:16:17be sharks. Or I
- 1:16:18want to work
- 1:16:18with, you know,
- 1:16:19this certain type
- 1:16:19of fish,
- 1:16:20everything has to be this. Otherwise,
- 1:16:20I'm not going to
- 1:16:23be an expert in
- 1:16:24this. But the
- 1:16:24reality of it is,
- 1:16:25is you're more
- 1:16:26well rounded when
- 1:16:27you can kind of
- 1:16:28move in between
- 1:16:29animals or, you
- 1:16:31know, just
- 1:16:32different
- 1:16:32projects that
- 1:16:33might not be
- 1:16:33like, I said, I'm
- 1:16:35my most of my
- 1:16:35work is in
- 1:16:36fisheries. It's
- 1:16:37not necessarily
- 1:16:37like, quote
- 1:16:37unquote, shark
- 1:16:38biology. But I've
- 1:16:41kind of been able
- 1:16:42to maneuver my
- 1:16:43way and I've gone
- 1:16:44back to sharks.
- 1:16:46So I think the
- 1:16:47moment there was
- 1:16:48a few times early
- 1:16:49on where I was discouraged, where I was thinking, well, I'm going to do this.
- 1:16:49I was
- 1:16:50discouraged,
- 1:16:50where I was
- 1:16:50thinking that,
- 1:16:51oh, you know,
- 1:16:52maybe I'll never
- 1:16:52get a chance to
- 1:16:53work with sharks.
- 1:16:54I'll never get a
- 1:16:55chance to be in
- 1:16:55this field
- 1:16:56because, you
- 1:16:57know, everything
- 1:16:58seems so
- 1:16:58uncertain. But I
- 1:16:59just kind of use
- 1:17:00those things as
- 1:17:01tournament of
- 1:17:01motivators when
- 1:17:02people were like,
- 1:17:03I don't think you
- 1:17:03can do it. And I
- 1:17:04was like, you
- 1:17:04know what? I can
- 1:17:05do it. And I'm
- 1:17:06going to do it.
- 1:17:07I like that. And
- 1:17:09in some way, you
- 1:17:10kind of have to
- 1:17:10prove people
- 1:17:11wrong because
- 1:17:12like, look,
- 1:17:13anytime you
- 1:17:13mention anything
- 1:17:14about marine
- 1:17:15biology or really
- 1:17:16any kind of job
- 1:17:17as a young
- 1:17:18person, right?
- 1:17:19People, there's
- 1:17:20always going to
- 1:17:20be doubters.
- 1:17:20So like, is this
- 1:17:21what you really
- 1:17:22want to do? Like,
- 1:17:23yeah, it seems
- 1:17:23fun to be out on
- 1:17:24the ocean and
- 1:17:25diving and, you
- 1:17:26know, sampling
- 1:17:27and all that kind
- 1:17:28of stuff being
- 1:17:28out in the sun.
- 1:17:30But is it really
- 1:17:30like, is it
- 1:17:31stable enough?
- 1:17:32Can you have a
- 1:17:32good career like
- 1:17:34you would as a
- 1:17:34lawyer, as a
- 1:17:35doctor, as a
- 1:17:36marketer, a
- 1:17:37business person
- 1:17:37and all that
- 1:17:38stuff? And you
- 1:17:39always get that
- 1:17:40negative talk,
- 1:17:42right? And I
- 1:17:43always tell
- 1:17:43people, I had a
- 1:17:45friend of mine, I
- 1:17:47presented in
- 1:17:47front of
- 1:17:48his class.
- 1:17:48And one of the
- 1:17:50classmates was
- 1:17:51just like, yeah,
- 1:17:51like, how do you
- 1:17:52like, how do you
- 1:17:52deal with that?
- 1:17:53And I'm just
- 1:17:53like, if you want
- 1:17:54it, go for it.
- 1:17:55Like, try it.
- 1:17:57You're young. Try
- 1:17:58it. Like, if it
- 1:17:59doesn't work out,
- 1:18:00pivot. You can
- 1:18:00always go back to
- 1:18:01school or you can
- 1:18:02always do
- 1:18:02something and and
- 1:18:04work with
- 1:18:05something like
- 1:18:05you have.
- 1:18:05You'll have a
- 1:18:06degree. You'll
- 1:18:07have a university
- 1:18:07degree and you'll
- 1:18:08be able to pivot.
- 1:18:09I've done it a
- 1:18:09couple of times.
- 1:18:10I'm doing it
- 1:18:11right now and
- 1:18:11you'll be able to
- 1:18:12figure it out.
- 1:18:13But you got to
- 1:18:14try it or else
- 1:18:15you're just going
- 1:18:15to regret it for
- 1:18:16the rest of your
- 1:18:16life. Right.
- 1:18:16And it's just you
- 1:18:19have to almost
- 1:18:19tell them it like
- 1:18:20throw it back in
- 1:18:21their face like,
- 1:18:21you know what,
- 1:18:21I'm doing it. And
- 1:18:22this is and I'm
- 1:18:23having a blast.
- 1:18:24You know, you're
- 1:18:25clearly having a
- 1:18:25blast doing this
- 1:18:27type of work. And
- 1:18:27you can just be
- 1:18:28like, look, I'm
- 1:18:28out. I'm out in
- 1:18:29the sun getting
- 1:18:30paid to do this.
- 1:18:31You know, this is
- 1:18:31a lot of fun. I'm
- 1:18:32learning a lot.
- 1:18:33And I feel as
- 1:18:34though there is.
- 1:18:34And you can answer this too. For me, there's a lot more to marine biology than just having a stable income. Obviously that matters. But if you look at any job, nothing stable these days, you can get laid off. Whether you're in these days, whether you're in the private sector or government, which used to be stable and it doesn't matter where you're from in whatever country, this can happen. So you never know what's going to be secure. You might as well do something you love or else you're not going to love. Life is going to be boring. And so I feel like you're going to be
- 1:19:04like, do you feel
- 1:19:05in a way like you
- 1:19:07got to
- 1:19:08just try it?
- 1:19:10Oh, 100%. I mean,
- 1:19:11that was kind of
- 1:19:12what my my
- 1:19:12thought process
- 1:19:13was, was why not?
- 1:19:15If I don't try
- 1:19:16it, I'll never
- 1:19:17know if I get it.
- 1:19:18But if I try and
- 1:19:19I get it, then it
- 1:19:20was all worth it.
- 1:19:21And if not, I'd
- 1:19:21learn something
- 1:19:22along the way. It
- 1:19:23was a fun
- 1:19:23journey. And I
- 1:19:24can say I tried.
- 1:19:25And there's no
- 1:19:26regret later on
- 1:19:27and being like,
- 1:19:27well, you know, I
- 1:19:29probably should
- 1:19:30have tried it,
- 1:19:30you know, who
- 1:19:31knows? I would
- 1:19:32rather just give
- 1:19:32it a shot, give
- 1:19:33it the best I can
- 1:19:34and just see
- 1:19:35where it goes.
- 1:19:35Yeah, I love
- 1:19:38that. I love that
- 1:19:38aspect. You know,
- 1:19:40working in
- 1:19:41fisheries and
- 1:19:42working in marine
- 1:19:43biology is always
- 1:19:44fun. And in
- 1:19:47science, just in
- 1:19:47general, it's fun
- 1:19:48because like I've
- 1:19:49talked to a lot
- 1:19:49of people,
- 1:19:50whether it be on
- 1:19:50this podcast or
- 1:19:51the Beyond Jaws
- 1:19:52podcast, where
- 1:19:54I'm not like,
- 1:19:54there's some
- 1:19:55people who have
- 1:19:56gone through
- 1:19:57their career.
- 1:19:59They've gone
- 1:19:59through like, you
- 1:20:00know, some of the
- 1:20:00people we've had,
- 1:20:01like they've been
- 1:20:02in 35 years plus
- 1:20:03of fisheries or
- 1:20:04marine biology or sharks.
- 1:20:04Or whatever that
- 1:20:06might be. But
- 1:20:08some of the
- 1:20:08pivots that
- 1:20:09they've taken
- 1:20:09within the field
- 1:20:10have really come
- 1:20:12from like a
- 1:20:12question, like a
- 1:20:13scientific
- 1:20:14question, like
- 1:20:15they want to know
- 1:20:16more about
- 1:20:16predator prey
- 1:20:17dynamics. They
- 1:20:18want to know more
- 1:20:19about like
- 1:20:19conservation or
- 1:20:20exploring how
- 1:20:21many how many
- 1:20:22species can they
- 1:20:23identify and
- 1:20:24discover, right?
- 1:20:25As my co host
- 1:20:26does Dr. David
- 1:20:27Ebert. Do you
- 1:20:30have one of
- 1:20:31those? Like, is
- 1:20:31there something
- 1:20:32that I know
- 1:20:33you're doing a master. So that's probably the most important thing.
- 1:20:33I'm a master. So
- 1:20:34that's probably
- 1:20:34your focus right
- 1:20:35now. But overall,
- 1:20:36is there are
- 1:20:37there specific
- 1:20:38questions that
- 1:20:38you're curious
- 1:20:39about that will
- 1:20:41that will drive
- 1:20:41you whether
- 1:20:42you're working on
- 1:20:42sharks or fish or
- 1:20:44mammals or
- 1:20:45whatever?
- 1:20:47I wouldn't say
- 1:20:47like a specific
- 1:20:48question to a
- 1:20:49project. I mean,
- 1:20:49I have tons of
- 1:20:50those. But in a
- 1:20:52general sense, I
- 1:20:53think it's and I
- 1:20:54think it comes
- 1:20:55with everyone
- 1:20:55else. And if
- 1:20:56people you've
- 1:20:56interviewed, it
- 1:20:57starts with like
- 1:20:58a passion. Like,
- 1:20:59we obviously love
- 1:21:00this. And there's
- 1:21:01something that
- 1:21:01draws us to it. So we have a connection with it.
- 1:21:02And then it's the
- 1:21:05curiosity part,
- 1:21:07you know, we,
- 1:21:07when we see how
- 1:21:09many questions
- 1:21:10you can ask. And
- 1:21:10it's that thing
- 1:21:11where it's like,
- 1:21:11the more you
- 1:21:12know, the more
- 1:21:13you realize you
- 1:21:13don't know. And I
- 1:21:14think that's the
- 1:21:15exciting part
- 1:21:16about science and
- 1:21:16a part of us that
- 1:21:17gets excited when
- 1:21:18we're like, you
- 1:21:19know, we learn
- 1:21:20more and then
- 1:21:20we're like, Oh,
- 1:21:21well, what about
- 1:21:21this? Well, what
- 1:21:22about that? How
- 1:21:23can this happen?
- 1:21:24So the questions
- 1:21:25start pouring in.
- 1:21:26And I think that
- 1:21:27is the excitement
- 1:21:28part. And it
- 1:21:28draws us into
- 1:21:29more and more
- 1:21:30projects. And it makes us want to do more and more projects.
- 1:21:30And it makes us
- 1:21:31want to do more
- 1:21:32and more work.
- 1:21:33Because we want
- 1:21:33to just
- 1:21:34understand our
- 1:21:34world, you know,
- 1:21:36as, as things are
- 1:21:37kind of
- 1:21:37constantly
- 1:21:38changing with the
- 1:21:39environment. And,
- 1:21:40you know, we want
- 1:21:41to understand
- 1:21:41these changes.
- 1:21:42And if we start
- 1:21:42now, we've done a
- 1:21:43really good job,
- 1:21:44you know, the
- 1:21:45past few decades,
- 1:21:46you know, in the
- 1:21:47future, you know,
- 1:21:48hopefully, we'll
- 1:21:48have these
- 1:21:49long-term
- 1:21:49datasets that,
- 1:21:51you know, we can
- 1:21:51watch these
- 1:21:52changes through
- 1:21:53time and
- 1:21:53understand these
- 1:21:54environmental
- 1:21:54changes. You
- 1:21:55know, we talk
- 1:21:55about climate
- 1:21:56change all the
- 1:21:56time. You know,
- 1:21:57it's so hard to
- 1:21:58look at climate
- 1:21:59change on such a
- 1:21:59small
- 1:22:00scale, you know.
- 1:22:00needs such
- 1:22:01a long term.
- 1:22:02So we get, I
- 1:22:03think as a
- 1:22:03scientist,
- 1:22:04we get excited
- 1:22:04because if we
- 1:22:04start things now
- 1:22:06for the future
- 1:22:07generations,
- 1:22:08we can have these
- 1:22:09data sets, we can
- 1:22:10watch
- 1:22:10them change.
- 1:22:11So those big
- 1:22:12picture questions
- 1:22:13that we are
- 1:22:13currently trying
- 1:22:14to ask
- 1:22:14and answer,
- 1:22:16we might not be
- 1:22:16able to answer in
- 1:22:17our lifetime,
- 1:22:17but we're setting
- 1:22:18it up for
- 1:22:19the future
- 1:22:19to be able to
- 1:22:20answer those
- 1:22:20questions.
- 1:22:21So I think that's
- 1:22:21also, it's like,
- 1:22:22we're trying to
- 1:22:23make our world a
- 1:22:24better place.
- 1:22:25It starts at a
- 1:22:25curiosity of just
- 1:22:26learning more,
- 1:22:27but then it's
- 1:22:27also that drive
- 1:22:28to wanting to
- 1:22:29conserve
- 1:22:30and protect what
- 1:22:31we have now and
- 1:22:32then make the
- 1:22:33world better for
- 1:22:34the future
- 1:22:34generations.
- 1:22:34I love that.
- 1:22:36That's awesome. I
- 1:22:36love that motto.
- 1:22:37Like just figure
- 1:22:38out how to make
- 1:22:39the world better.
- 1:22:39Like no matter
- 1:22:40what, like just
- 1:22:41figure it out.
- 1:22:41And you have
- 1:22:42these certain
- 1:22:42questions.
- 1:22:43I mean, I know as
- 1:22:43a marine
- 1:22:44biologist, we
- 1:22:44always have
- 1:22:45questions.
- 1:23:00She wants to go
- 1:23:00into wildlife
- 1:23:01biology. I'm
- 1:23:01like, she's not
- 1:23:02marine biology.
- 1:23:03I'm like,
- 1:23:03nobody's perfect.
- 1:23:04That's
- 1:23:04fine. I get it.
- 1:23:05You can go on
- 1:23:06land animals, but
- 1:23:07now I'm starting
- 1:23:07to like think
- 1:23:08about it.
- 1:23:08I'm starting to,
- 1:23:09we're starting to
- 1:23:10ask each other
- 1:23:10questions.
- 1:23:11Like, I wonder
- 1:23:11what would happen
- 1:23:12to this.
- 1:23:12How would we
- 1:23:12design the study
- 1:23:13to figure it out?
- 1:23:14So introducing
- 1:23:15like statistics
- 1:23:16and all that kind
- 1:23:16of stuff.
- 1:23:16So it's a lot of
- 1:23:17fun to even just
- 1:23:17think about those
- 1:23:19questions and
- 1:23:19talking
- 1:23:20about school,
- 1:23:21like you're
- 1:23:21working
- 1:23:22full time.
- 1:23:23You had your
- 1:23:23undergraduate
- 1:23:23degree, you get
- 1:23:24this job.
- 1:23:25It's wonderful.
- 1:23:27What made you
- 1:23:27decide to have
- 1:23:29this crazy idea
- 1:23:30of going
- 1:23:30back to school?
- 1:23:32What was the
- 1:23:33trigger for that?
- 1:23:35Like what made
- 1:23:35you ignite that?
- 1:23:36Oh, I want to go
- 1:23:37back. And did you
- 1:23:38always want to go
- 1:23:38back for
- 1:23:39graduate school?
- 1:23:40I'd always wanted
- 1:23:41to go back. I
- 1:23:43definitely took
- 1:23:44an
- 1:23:44untraditional route.
- 1:23:45So I graduated in
- 1:23:472016 with my
- 1:23:48undergraduate and
- 1:23:49then I got my job
- 1:23:50and I was
- 1:23:50working there.
- 1:23:51And I know I
- 1:23:51wanted to go
- 1:23:52back, but I
- 1:23:52really wanted to
- 1:23:53get some real
- 1:23:54world like
- 1:23:55experience
- 1:23:56in the field. And
- 1:23:58I was trying to
- 1:23:59also set myself
- 1:24:00apart from some
- 1:24:01of the other
- 1:24:01applicants.
- 1:24:02I was like, no
- 1:24:03going into marine
- 1:24:03science,
- 1:24:04especially when
- 1:24:04you're going into
- 1:24:05grad school,
- 1:24:05you have to be
- 1:24:06competitive. You
- 1:24:07know, there's a
- 1:24:07lot of people and
- 1:24:08there's a lot of
- 1:24:08amazing,
- 1:24:09smart people. So
- 1:24:10I was trying to
- 1:24:11find a way to set
- 1:24:12myself apart. So
- 1:24:14my thought
- 1:24:14process was,
- 1:24:15I'm going to take
- 1:24:16some time off.
- 1:24:17I'm going to kind
- 1:24:17of reframe
- 1:24:18myself, kind of
- 1:24:19get back into the
- 1:24:20mindset. I'm
- 1:24:20going to work as
- 1:24:21hard as I can,
- 1:24:22learn as much as
- 1:24:22I can through
- 1:24:22this job. And
- 1:24:24then I can
- 1:24:24go back to grad
- 1:24:24school and I can
- 1:24:25apply what I
- 1:24:26learned in my job
- 1:24:27to the grad
- 1:24:28school. And you
- 1:24:28know, maybe it'll
- 1:24:29help me because
- 1:24:29I'm these
- 1:24:30concepts are not
- 1:24:31just in the
- 1:24:32textbook.
- 1:24:32I've, I've
- 1:24:33seen the concepts
- 1:24:34in real life.
- 1:24:34I've seen them
- 1:24:35applied. So I
- 1:24:36thought that that
- 1:24:37maybe would also
- 1:24:38just just help me
- 1:24:39in general. So I
- 1:24:41went back to grad
- 1:24:42school in 2021.
- 1:24:43And it was kind
- 1:24:44of during
- 1:24:44COVID when I kind
- 1:24:45of made this
- 1:24:45decision, like
- 1:24:46this is the time
- 1:24:47because what else
- 1:24:48was I
- 1:24:48going to do?
- 1:24:49I needed to study
- 1:24:49for the GRE and
- 1:24:51everything was
- 1:24:51closed. So I
- 1:24:52might as well buy
- 1:24:53the textbook and
- 1:24:54start studying.
- 1:24:56And so that was
- 1:24:57kind of that
- 1:24:57moment where I
- 1:24:58was like, all
- 1:24:58right, this is
- 1:24:59the time,
- 1:25:00like the world,
- 1:25:00even though this
- 1:25:01is terrible, it's
- 1:25:02kind of setting
- 1:25:02me up to kind of
- 1:25:03give me the right
- 1:25:04time to, to give
- 1:25:06myself to study,
- 1:25:07get into a
- 1:25:07university and
- 1:25:08kind of figure
- 1:25:08out, you know,
- 1:25:09the next steps
- 1:25:10from there. I
- 1:25:11think that's
- 1:25:11great. I mean,
- 1:25:12it's a great, it
- 1:25:12was a great time
- 1:25:13to do it
- 1:25:13because we did,
- 1:25:14everybody had
- 1:25:15extra time,
- 1:25:15right? We're
- 1:25:16either stuck at
- 1:25:17home or, you
- 1:25:17know, things
- 1:25:18are a little bit
- 1:25:19more limited to
- 1:25:19where you can go
- 1:25:20and whether you
- 1:25:21want to be
- 1:25:21limited or not,
- 1:25:22you know,
- 1:25:22everybody had
- 1:25:23that decision to
- 1:25:23make. And I think
- 1:25:25that's, I think
- 1:25:25it's a great
- 1:25:26opportunity
- 1:25:26when I always
- 1:25:27said like, when
- 1:25:28recessions hit
- 1:25:29and stuff like
- 1:25:29that, and you
- 1:25:30have the chance,
- 1:25:31like try and do
- 1:25:31something extra,
- 1:25:32go back to
- 1:25:33school, get it
- 1:25:33like a diploma or
- 1:25:35get like a
- 1:25:36degree or even
- 1:25:37get, you know,
- 1:25:37just go back and
- 1:25:38get like a
- 1:25:39project
- 1:25:39management, you
- 1:25:40know, diploma or
- 1:25:40whatever that is,
- 1:25:41certificate, and
- 1:25:42then try and just
- 1:25:42get a little
- 1:25:43higher in that
- 1:25:44education to set
- 1:25:45yourself apart.
- 1:25:46I really like
- 1:25:46that, that, that
- 1:25:48knowledge before
- 1:25:49we just go into
- 1:25:49the, the
- 1:25:50graduates
- 1:25:50and how you
- 1:25:51balance that. Can
- 1:25:52you talk a little
- 1:25:53bit about like
- 1:25:54the methods you
- 1:25:55use to get your
- 1:25:56first job,
- 1:25:57like out of
- 1:25:57university?
- 1:25:58Because a lot of
- 1:25:58people struggle
- 1:25:59with getting
- 1:26:00that, that
- 1:26:01job, right?
- 1:26:02People all the
- 1:26:02times, like I've
- 1:26:03just graduated,
- 1:26:04I've undergrad, I
- 1:26:05don't necessarily
- 1:26:06want to go back
- 1:26:07to grad, to do a
- 1:26:08graduate degree,
- 1:26:09but God, I can't
- 1:26:10get, like, I
- 1:26:11can't get
- 1:26:11somebody to
- 1:26:12answer my, my,
- 1:26:12to my
- 1:26:13application. Like
- 1:26:14I can't get an
- 1:26:14interview. Did
- 1:26:15you do anything
- 1:26:16that, that you
- 1:26:17particularly
- 1:26:17like realized
- 1:26:18like, Oh, this
- 1:26:18actually really
- 1:26:19helped? Or did
- 1:26:20you have a
- 1:26:20network that
- 1:26:21helped
- 1:26:22you get that
- 1:26:22job? Like what
- 1:26:23did you feel you
- 1:26:24did to get that,
- 1:26:26that interview to
- 1:26:27get that job? So
- 1:26:28a few things.
- 1:26:29First off, I will
- 1:26:30say, I also
- 1:26:31struggled. I, I
- 1:26:33had two years
- 1:26:34where I, I
- 1:26:35graduated, I got
- 1:26:36my degree,
- 1:26:36and I was
- 1:26:37actively
- 1:26:37searching for
- 1:26:38jobs. I was
- 1:26:39bartending at the
- 1:26:39time, I was
- 1:26:40working odd jobs
- 1:26:41and, you know,
- 1:26:42save up some
- 1:26:43money. And, you
- 1:26:44know, there was a
- 1:26:44point where I
- 1:26:45got, I got
- 1:26:45discouraged,
- 1:26:46but I had reached
- 1:26:47out, I had some
- 1:26:48networks I
- 1:26:48created during my
- 1:26:49undergrad, I was,
- 1:26:50I was very
- 1:26:53involved in the
- 1:26:54university and
- 1:26:55biology club. And
- 1:26:56I, you know, I
- 1:26:57was an officer in
- 1:26:58there and I had,
- 1:26:58you know, I did
- 1:26:59undergrad
- 1:26:59research. So I
- 1:27:00had a lot of
- 1:27:00connections, and
- 1:27:01obviously people
- 1:27:01had moved on,
- 1:27:02but I started
- 1:27:02reaching out to
- 1:27:03people. And a
- 1:27:04friend of mine,
- 1:27:05Jordy, who
- 1:27:05actually worked
- 1:27:06for the agency,
- 1:27:06I reached out to
- 1:27:07her and we were
- 1:27:08talking. And she
- 1:27:09said that there,
- 1:27:11this group was
- 1:27:12looking for
- 1:27:12volunteers. And I
- 1:27:14was, I was
- 1:27:15fortunate enough
- 1:27:15to have, you
- 1:27:17know, the, I
- 1:27:18guess the
- 1:27:18network within
- 1:27:19the area, but
- 1:27:20also have being
- 1:27:23able to
- 1:27:23volunteer. And I
- 1:27:24know, I always
- 1:27:25say the best way
- 1:27:26to really
- 1:27:26get a job,
- 1:27:27especially in
- 1:27:27this field is
- 1:27:27volunteer. But
- 1:27:29even that I know,
- 1:27:30you know, it's
- 1:27:31privileged in
- 1:27:31itself because
- 1:27:32not everyone can
- 1:27:33work for free. I
- 1:27:34mean, it's so
- 1:27:35hard because, you
- 1:27:36know, I always
- 1:27:37say even just a
- 1:27:38few hours a day,
- 1:27:38if you can, if
- 1:27:39you can find it,
- 1:27:40is better than
- 1:27:41nothing. I was
- 1:27:42able, I kind of
- 1:27:43just gave up my
- 1:27:44weekends. So I
- 1:27:45was bartending
- 1:27:46the weekends, but
- 1:27:46my quote unquote
- 1:27:47weekends during
- 1:27:48the day, I just
- 1:27:48volunteered. So I
- 1:27:50volunteered for
- 1:27:52about six to
- 1:27:52eight hours a day
- 1:27:53for two times a
- 1:27:54week for a few
- 1:27:55months. And it
- 1:27:56was basically
- 1:27:56just training for
- 1:27:58the job. So I
- 1:28:00always tell
- 1:28:00people, I'm like,
- 1:28:01if you can
- 1:28:02volunteer at
- 1:28:02several different
- 1:28:03places, if you
- 1:28:03don't really know
- 1:28:04what you want to
- 1:28:04do, and you have
- 1:28:06the ability, try
- 1:28:07to find some
- 1:28:07places and you
- 1:28:08know, give it a
- 1:28:09month or a few
- 1:28:09months, or just
- 1:28:10let them know
- 1:28:11that you're just
- 1:28:11trying to figure
- 1:28:12out some things,
- 1:28:12but you want to,
- 1:28:13you know, give
- 1:28:13them your time
- 1:28:14and learn
- 1:28:14and learn from
- 1:28:15them. But just
- 1:28:17explore, like the
- 1:28:19time to volunteer
- 1:28:20is a time to
- 1:28:20explore and you
- 1:28:21can figure out if
- 1:28:23you, you
- 1:28:23know, if you
- 1:28:24want to be a, you
- 1:28:25know, a
- 1:28:25zookeeper, if you
- 1:28:26want to work in
- 1:28:26the aquariums,
- 1:28:27you want to do
- 1:28:27husbandry. For
- 1:28:29me, I, you know,
- 1:28:30I did an
- 1:28:30internship and I
- 1:28:31realized that
- 1:28:31husbandry full
- 1:28:32time wasn't for
- 1:28:33me. I loved
- 1:28:33husbandry, but
- 1:28:34just full time, I
- 1:28:35wanted, I wanted
- 1:28:37more research. So
- 1:28:38I knew that I
- 1:28:38needed to add
- 1:28:39that in there.
- 1:28:40But I wouldn't
- 1:28:40have known unless
- 1:28:41I tried. So I
- 1:28:42think doing the
- 1:28:42internships and
- 1:28:44volunteering was
- 1:28:45just, it set me
- 1:28:46up to figure out
- 1:28:47what I wanted to
- 1:28:48do. And it was
- 1:28:48also giving me
- 1:28:49skill sets that I
- 1:28:50could have then
- 1:28:51apply for the job
- 1:28:52applications and
- 1:28:53or give me an in
- 1:28:54with someone was
- 1:28:55once the job
- 1:28:55opened up. And if
- 1:28:56I was in an
- 1:28:56internship or
- 1:28:57volunteer
- 1:28:57position, I was
- 1:28:59basically trained
- 1:29:00for the job. So
- 1:29:01when I would
- 1:29:02instead of having
- 1:29:02to hire someone
- 1:29:03that had
- 1:29:03never been
- 1:29:04familiar with
- 1:29:05the, you know,
- 1:29:05their protocols
- 1:29:06and their
- 1:29:06procedures, I had
- 1:29:07been for months.
- 1:29:08So it was a
- 1:29:10natural
- 1:29:10progression
- 1:29:10into a position.
- 1:29:12But I know, I
- 1:29:13know with like
- 1:29:14internships, I
- 1:29:14did one paid one
- 1:29:16through Mote
- 1:29:17Marine, it was a
- 1:29:18USF Mote Marine,
- 1:29:20collab, but it
- 1:29:21was very similar
- 1:29:22to the REU
- 1:29:23program. I always
- 1:29:23tell like
- 1:29:24students that are
- 1:29:25undergrad. So I
- 1:29:26said, look
- 1:29:26at the REU
- 1:29:27program, it is a
- 1:29:28paid internship
- 1:29:28program funded
- 1:29:30through the NSF
- 1:29:30grants. And I was
- 1:29:31like, it's a
- 1:29:32great time
- 1:29:33because you
- 1:29:33get to do a
- 1:29:34full research
- 1:29:35project, you do a
- 1:29:35proposal, you do
- 1:29:36the research, you
- 1:29:37are basically a
- 1:29:38lab check that
- 1:29:39entire time, you
- 1:29:40go in the
- 1:29:40field, and you do
- 1:29:42a full poster
- 1:29:43presentation and
- 1:29:44basically like a
- 1:29:45manuscript at the
- 1:29:46end. Publishing
- 1:29:48is
- 1:29:48dependent on, you
- 1:29:49know, the, the
- 1:29:50advisor, but it
- 1:29:51gives you a
- 1:29:52chance to really
- 1:29:52see what research
- 1:29:53is from start to
- 1:29:54finish and, you
- 1:29:55know, determine
- 1:29:56if do you like
- 1:29:57research? I've
- 1:29:57had friends that
- 1:29:58have done it and
- 1:29:58been like,
- 1:29:59research isn't
- 1:29:59for me, I rather,
- 1:30:00you know, go into
- 1:30:01teaching or do
- 1:30:02consulting. So I
- 1:30:04always say like,
- 1:30:05those are the
- 1:30:05opportunities
- 1:30:05when you can get
- 1:30:06paid to do
- 1:30:07it, you can
- 1:30:08experience what
- 1:30:09research is like
- 1:30:10from a start to
- 1:30:11finish
- 1:30:11standpoint, and,
- 1:30:12and then be able
- 1:30:14to come out of
- 1:30:14that with a
- 1:30:15really good
- 1:30:15skill set and
- 1:30:17kind of set
- 1:30:17yourself up for
- 1:30:18these jobs
- 1:30:18because you've
- 1:30:19also broadened
- 1:30:20your network by
- 1:30:21just
- 1:30:21working with all
- 1:30:22these people.
- 1:30:24Yeah, it's
- 1:30:24amazing. And also
- 1:30:25like when you
- 1:30:25work for like
- 1:30:26when you
- 1:30:26volunteer in a
- 1:30:27lab, like REU
- 1:30:28program or any
- 1:30:29other lab, you
- 1:30:30work on multiple
- 1:30:31projects, you
- 1:30:32learn how to use
- 1:30:32different
- 1:30:33instrumentation,
- 1:30:33you learn
- 1:30:34different
- 1:30:34methods of
- 1:30:35analysis and
- 1:30:36statistics and
- 1:30:37all that. And you
- 1:30:38really get that
- 1:30:39experience. So I
- 1:30:39love that. I love
- 1:30:40how you you
- 1:30:41volunteer. And I
- 1:30:42think, you know,
- 1:30:43volunteering has
- 1:30:43got a bad rap
- 1:30:44over the last
- 1:30:45decade, because
- 1:30:46there's been a
- 1:30:46lot of and I call
- 1:30:47them like
- 1:30:48predatory
- 1:30:48organizations
- 1:30:49where you have to
- 1:30:50pay to do the
- 1:30:51work for them,
- 1:30:52which I don't
- 1:30:52like, I really
- 1:30:53feel like that is
- 1:30:54detrimental to to
- 1:30:56not only being a
- 1:30:57marine biologist,
- 1:30:58but just the work
- 1:30:58in general. But I
- 1:31:00liked what you
- 1:31:00did is
- 1:31:01like, look,
- 1:31:01you and look, I'm
- 1:31:02not saying this
- 1:31:03is not easy. You
- 1:31:04worked all day in
- 1:31:05the field, and
- 1:31:06then you go
- 1:31:06bartend at
- 1:31:07night, like on
- 1:31:08the weekends.
- 1:31:09That's not easy.
- 1:31:10I don't care what
- 1:31:11anybody says,
- 1:31:11that's tiring
- 1:31:12stuff. And that
- 1:31:13but you did it
- 1:31:14because you
- 1:31:14loved it, you did
- 1:31:15it because you
- 1:31:15wanted to do it.
- 1:31:16And that was the
- 1:31:16one way that you
- 1:31:17could do it.
- 1:31:18Obviously,
- 1:31:18if you could
- 1:31:18apply, get an
- 1:31:19interview and get
- 1:31:20the job right
- 1:31:21away, that would
- 1:31:22have been great
- 1:31:22too. But
- 1:31:23sometimes it just
- 1:31:24doesn't
- 1:31:24happen. For a
- 1:31:25lot of us, it
- 1:31:25just doesn't
- 1:31:26happen.
- 1:31:27Volunteering
- 1:31:27gives them the
- 1:31:28team a chance to
- 1:31:29get to know you.
- 1:31:30Are you good with
- 1:31:31the team? Do
- 1:31:32you fit in with
- 1:31:32the team? Are you
- 1:31:33hardworking? That
- 1:31:34shows you, you
- 1:31:35have a second, a
- 1:31:36long term
- 1:31:37interview that
- 1:31:38just that
- 1:31:38shows them
- 1:31:39what you can do.
- 1:31:40And I think and
- 1:31:41shows the passion
- 1:31:42going at that
- 1:31:43extra little mile
- 1:31:44and to put in,
- 1:31:45you know, a
- 1:31:46number of
- 1:31:46hours on
- 1:31:47the weekend for a
- 1:31:48couple of months
- 1:31:49or three or four
- 1:31:49months or
- 1:31:50whatever they
- 1:31:50that might be.
- 1:31:51And then you get
- 1:31:52a job, it's
- 1:31:52worth it. And
- 1:31:53even if it's not,
- 1:31:54at least you got
- 1:31:55the experience
- 1:31:55and maybe get a
- 1:31:56reference from
- 1:31:57someone else,
- 1:31:57right? That's the
- 1:31:58power of
- 1:31:59networking and
- 1:32:00the power of
- 1:32:00putting yourself
- 1:32:01out there. And
- 1:32:01what was nice is
- 1:32:02you didn't have
- 1:32:02to pay to do it.
- 1:32:04You didn't have
- 1:32:04to go away to
- 1:32:05do it. It was
- 1:32:05right in your
- 1:32:06backyard. So that
- 1:32:06helped too. I
- 1:32:07think that that
- 1:32:08was really good.
- 1:32:09And then of
- 1:32:09course,
- 1:32:09showing how how
- 1:32:10good you are and
- 1:32:11how excited you
- 1:32:12are to do the
- 1:32:12work. And like I
- 1:32:14said, working in
- 1:32:15the field is
- 1:32:15never easy at
- 1:32:16all. And so to
- 1:32:17show that
- 1:32:18you can do it and
- 1:32:18you enjoy it, I
- 1:32:19think that's
- 1:32:19that's really
- 1:32:20that's really
- 1:32:21helpful. So
- 1:32:22that's great. So
- 1:32:22let's go back to
- 1:32:23masters and
- 1:32:25job. Those are
- 1:32:26not easy to do
- 1:32:27it. We talked
- 1:32:28earlier, you
- 1:32:29married them
- 1:32:29together by, you
- 1:32:30know, doing a
- 1:32:31project that I
- 1:32:32assume
- 1:32:33was part of
- 1:32:34some of the work
- 1:32:35that you were
- 1:32:35that you were
- 1:32:36doing, or maybe a
- 1:32:37project that was
- 1:32:37going to happen.
- 1:32:38Can you just talk
- 1:32:38a little bit
- 1:32:39about how the
- 1:32:40project got
- 1:32:41married together
- 1:32:42with the masters?
- 1:32:44So it was kind of
- 1:32:45unintentional. I
- 1:32:47applied to the
- 1:32:48university,
- 1:32:49knowing that
- 1:32:50there was a field
- 1:32:51lab up in the
- 1:32:52region, but
- 1:32:53didn't
- 1:32:53know how it
- 1:32:53was gonna work. I
- 1:32:54was just going to
- 1:32:55make it work.
- 1:32:56However, I can,
- 1:32:57you know, if I
- 1:32:57was like, if I
- 1:32:58need to bump down
- 1:32:58to part time, or
- 1:32:59I was just
- 1:33:00gonna figure it
- 1:33:01out. Gotcha. But
- 1:33:02I really want I
- 1:33:03really liked the
- 1:33:03program at
- 1:33:04Jackson
- 1:33:05University. And
- 1:33:06I, again, it, I
- 1:33:08will say what
- 1:33:09drew me in
- 1:33:10was white sharks,
- 1:33:11you know, that
- 1:33:11not not very
- 1:33:13often you you get
- 1:33:15a chance to work
- 1:33:16with them. And I
- 1:33:16saw it and I was
- 1:33:17like, wow. And
- 1:33:19you know, I had
- 1:33:20been following it
- 1:33:20was her son as a
- 1:33:21kid, you know,
- 1:33:21watching them on
- 1:33:22TV and show and I
- 1:33:23was like, wow, a
- 1:33:24chance to work
- 1:33:25with these large
- 1:33:26individuals that
- 1:33:27I would never get
- 1:33:28a chance to even
- 1:33:28be near. And
- 1:33:30then, you know,
- 1:33:31working with this
- 1:33:31organization,
- 1:33:32where I could
- 1:33:32learn so
- 1:33:32much from so many
- 1:33:33different people
- 1:33:33and go to school,
- 1:33:35I was like, this
- 1:33:35this seems too
- 1:33:37good to be true.
- 1:33:37But I was like,
- 1:33:38let me go for it.
- 1:33:39So I applied
- 1:33:40and I got in. And
- 1:33:43I will say with
- 1:33:43JU's, they you
- 1:33:45don't, you don't
- 1:33:46go in with a
- 1:33:47project, you
- 1:33:48spend your first semester
- 1:33:48meeting with
- 1:33:50professors and
- 1:33:51kind of figuring
- 1:33:51out projects, and
- 1:33:53what's a good fit
- 1:33:53for you and who
- 1:33:54is taking
- 1:33:54students. So that
- 1:33:56was also nerve
- 1:33:57racking, because
- 1:33:57I didn't know if
- 1:33:58I was gonna get
- 1:33:58the project that
- 1:33:59I necessarily,
- 1:34:00you know, wanted.
- 1:34:01So, but it worked
- 1:34:03out because
- 1:34:04I, and the main
- 1:34:06reason when I was
- 1:34:06thinking about
- 1:34:07this particular
- 1:34:07project and this
- 1:34:08university for
- 1:34:09grad school is I
- 1:34:10really wanted a
- 1:34:10data heavy
- 1:34:11thesis. So I had
- 1:34:13a lot of field
- 1:34:13work through my
- 1:34:14normal work, but
- 1:34:16I was more of a
- 1:34:17field biologist.
- 1:34:18I was doing you
- 1:34:19know, some
- 1:34:19analysis. But it
- 1:34:20was more I'm more
- 1:34:21in the field, I'm
- 1:34:21in, in shore and
- 1:34:23offshore. But the
- 1:34:24analysis side, I
- 1:34:25could tell was
- 1:34:26where I was, I
- 1:34:27was lacking and I
- 1:34:28needed something
- 1:34:28for grad school.
- 1:34:29I was like, this
- 1:34:29is the time to
- 1:34:30kind of bring
- 1:34:30that up to make
- 1:34:31me more of a well
- 1:34:32rounded
- 1:34:32scientist. And so with that project, I didn't want to do that.
- 1:34:33And so with that
- 1:34:34project through
- 1:34:35what I was using
- 1:34:36the O search
- 1:34:36data, it is all
- 1:34:37tagged data.
- 1:34:38So it is all
- 1:34:39analyses.
- 1:34:41And so it worked
- 1:34:41out because the
- 1:34:42field time
- 1:34:43was more limited
- 1:34:44to certain
- 1:34:44expeditions
- 1:34:45based on
- 1:34:45time of year.
- 1:34:48But the nitty
- 1:34:50gritty of
- 1:34:50the thesis
- 1:34:51is sitting in
- 1:34:52front of a
- 1:34:52computer and
- 1:34:53learning R code
- 1:34:54and you know,
- 1:34:55manipulating the
- 1:34:55tag data and
- 1:34:56learning GIS.
- 1:34:57And that was what
- 1:34:57I wanted.
- 1:34:58So it happened to
- 1:34:59work out that
- 1:35:00what I was
- 1:35:01looking for
- 1:35:01and what I wanted to do was to work out what I was doing.
- 1:35:02And so I was looking for a way to get that kind of a master's kind
- 1:35:03of presented
- 1:35:03itself at this
- 1:35:04university and
- 1:35:05kind of gave
- 1:35:05me a chance.
- 1:35:06And I think
- 1:35:06because I had the
- 1:35:07field experience
- 1:35:08prior that this
- 1:35:10was a good
- 1:35:11project for me
- 1:35:12and kind of gave
- 1:35:13me that ability
- 1:35:14to get this
- 1:35:15project because I
- 1:35:15most times in a
- 1:35:16master's
- 1:35:17you're trying to
- 1:35:17get that field
- 1:35:18experience, but I
- 1:35:19already had it.
- 1:35:20So this kind of
- 1:35:21set me up in a
- 1:35:21unique way.
- 1:35:22So my work has
- 1:35:25nothing to do
- 1:35:26with my master's
- 1:35:28thesis in
- 1:35:28any way.
- 1:35:29There's almost no
- 1:35:30overlap except
- 1:35:30for the
- 1:35:31university and my
- 1:35:33office is in the
- 1:35:34same building.
- 1:35:34That is the only
- 1:35:35overlap.
- 1:35:36And I didn't know
- 1:35:36they were in the
- 1:35:36same building
- 1:35:37until I showed up
- 1:35:37for orientation.
- 1:35:39And I was walking
- 1:35:40down the hallway
- 1:35:40and I went, oh, I
- 1:35:43guess this is my
- 1:35:43new office.
- 1:35:46That's awesome.
- 1:35:48Well, and I think
- 1:35:48there's something
- 1:35:49to be said too,
- 1:35:50when you have all
- 1:35:50that field work
- 1:35:51experience,
- 1:35:52you know, you've
- 1:35:52worked at, so I
- 1:35:53assume, and you
- 1:35:54can correct me if
- 1:35:55I'm wrong,
- 1:35:55you were probably
- 1:35:56working at your
- 1:35:57job for about
- 1:35:57seven or
- 1:35:58eight years.
- 1:35:58And then when you
- 1:35:58started your
- 1:35:59master's, is that
- 1:35:59what we're
- 1:36:00looking at 2016
- 1:36:01in and around
- 1:36:01that time?
- 1:36:022016, I was
- 1:36:04about, I started
- 1:36:06technically
- 1:36:06in 2018.
- 1:36:08So I graduated
- 1:36:08the two
- 1:36:09years off 2018.
- 1:36:09I think it was
- 1:36:10like three and a
- 1:36:10half,
- 1:36:11three years.
- 1:36:12Yeah, which is
- 1:36:13good, a good
- 1:36:14amount of field
- 1:36:14experience,
- 1:36:15especially if
- 1:36:15you're in the
- 1:36:15field most of the
- 1:36:16time in Florida,
- 1:36:17you can be in the
- 1:36:17field all year
- 1:36:18long, not like
- 1:36:19here in Ontario,
- 1:36:19where if you're
- 1:36:20in the field all
- 1:36:20year long, you
- 1:36:21are miserable for
- 1:36:22about four to six
- 1:36:23months out of
- 1:36:24that year.
- 1:36:25But regardless,
- 1:36:26you're in the
- 1:36:26field, you got
- 1:36:26lots of field
- 1:36:27experience,
- 1:36:27and then you get
- 1:36:28to do everything
- 1:36:29in front of a
- 1:36:31computer, right?
- 1:36:32You know,
- 1:36:32multiple
- 1:36:33monitors, looking
- 1:36:33at GIS, looking
- 1:36:34at spatial
- 1:36:35analysis.
- 1:36:36Now, again, I say
- 1:36:38field work is
- 1:36:39hard until you
- 1:36:40have to
- 1:36:41learn R code.
- 1:36:43It's probably,
- 1:36:44it's like for
- 1:36:45graduate students
- 1:36:46to like torture
- 1:36:46and watching
- 1:36:47graduate students
- 1:36:47go through it,
- 1:36:48because as I have
- 1:36:49in the past and
- 1:36:50gone through it
- 1:36:51myself, it is
- 1:36:52like crying
- 1:36:53frustrating
- 1:36:54at times.
- 1:36:54Like there's
- 1:36:55tears. It doesn't
- 1:36:56matter
- 1:36:56who you are.
- 1:36:57It doesn't matter
- 1:36:58your gender.
- 1:36:58You're going to
- 1:36:59cry at some point
- 1:37:00for that computer
- 1:37:01because this code
- 1:37:02is not working,
- 1:37:03especially I
- 1:37:04bought the
- 1:37:04spatial analysis
- 1:37:05R code book
- 1:37:08before I learned
- 1:37:09R and I
- 1:37:10looked at it.
- 1:37:10I'm like this, I
- 1:37:11can't, this is
- 1:37:11this is a
- 1:37:12different
- 1:37:12language.
- 1:37:12I don't know what
- 1:37:13this is.
- 1:37:14Like it's it is
- 1:37:14hard, right?
- 1:37:15I'm a GIS analyst
- 1:37:16as well.
- 1:37:16And so I learned
- 1:37:17a lot on that.
- 1:37:18And once you
- 1:37:19said, oh, yeah, I
- 1:37:20got tagged data
- 1:37:21like for decades
- 1:37:22of work for
- 1:37:23white sharks.
- 1:37:24That that got my
- 1:37:25GIS going like I
- 1:37:26was like, okay,
- 1:37:27this you're set.
- 1:37:28Like you've got a
- 1:37:29cool species
- 1:37:30obviously iconic
- 1:37:31and then being
- 1:37:32able to discover
- 1:37:33and identify
- 1:37:34like, you know,
- 1:37:35spatial patterns
- 1:37:36that we've
- 1:37:37discovered the
- 1:37:38last decade of
- 1:37:39this of this
- 1:37:39great white
- 1:37:40population that
- 1:37:41basically comes
- 1:37:42down to
- 1:37:42Jacksonville in
- 1:37:43the winter.
- 1:37:43And then and then
- 1:37:44goes is it
- 1:37:45Jacksonville as
- 1:37:45it come as far
- 1:37:46down as
- 1:37:46Jacksonville or
- 1:37:46is it go to
- 1:37:47Carolina's they
- 1:37:48go and well, so
- 1:37:49they're
- 1:37:49overwintering
- 1:37:50region ranges
- 1:37:51from the
- 1:37:51Carolina.
- 1:37:52So the North
- 1:37:52Carolina,
- 1:37:53especially out of
- 1:37:53the outer banks
- 1:37:54all the way along
- 1:37:55Florida into the
- 1:37:56Gulf so they can
- 1:37:57even go to
- 1:37:58the Gulf.
- 1:37:58Yeah, the
- 1:37:59furthest point
- 1:38:00and through the
- 1:38:01research tag
- 1:38:02telemetry is
- 1:38:02almost
- 1:38:03near Texas.
- 1:38:04It's only a
- 1:38:05few points.
- 1:38:05A lot of them
- 1:38:05will hang out
- 1:38:06near Louisiana,
- 1:38:07but we do see
- 1:38:07them all the way.
- 1:38:09And recently they
- 1:38:09have found out
- 1:38:10about 50% of the
- 1:38:11tag individuals
- 1:38:12that they have
- 1:38:12actually make
- 1:38:13their way into
- 1:38:14the Gulf, which I
- 1:38:16didn't know.
- 1:38:38I mean, we didn't know up until not that long ago. And then as more
- 1:38:40tag data, you
- 1:38:40know, has become
- 1:38:41readily available
- 1:38:42and the
- 1:38:42technologies have
- 1:38:43increased, we
- 1:38:44have
- 1:38:45better chance.
- 1:38:45And now we
- 1:38:46realize they're
- 1:38:47along Florida all
- 1:38:48throughout
- 1:38:48the winter.
- 1:38:49I mean, the
- 1:38:49Carolina's I
- 1:38:50mean, they use
- 1:38:51that coastline
- 1:38:51back and forth
- 1:38:52all the time.
- 1:38:53And and we don't.
- 1:38:54And the thing is,
- 1:38:54there's a lot of
- 1:38:56research being
- 1:38:56done in that New
- 1:38:57England and Nova
- 1:38:58Scotia and
- 1:38:59Newfoundland
- 1:38:59area.
- 1:39:00But this
- 1:39:01southeast part of
- 1:39:02the United
- 1:39:02States, we're
- 1:39:03beginning to get
- 1:39:03more data on.
- 1:39:04And that's kind
- 1:39:05of where my my
- 1:39:06thesis comes in
- 1:39:06is we're
- 1:39:07beginning to kind
- 1:39:08of get a better
- 1:39:09idea of how
- 1:39:09they're utilizing
- 1:39:10this area and to
- 1:39:11kind of
- 1:39:12understand their
- 1:39:12more fine scale
- 1:39:13movements.
- 1:39:14And then that we
- 1:39:14can begin to
- 1:39:15answer these
- 1:39:15questions and to
- 1:39:16understand how
- 1:39:17are they how are
- 1:39:18they using
- 1:39:18these areas?
- 1:39:19What are they
- 1:39:19doing while
- 1:39:19they're here?
- 1:39:20Or what are their
- 1:39:21diving profiles
- 1:39:22look like?
- 1:39:22Because we don't
- 1:39:23have the
- 1:39:24information that
- 1:39:24we have here as
- 1:39:26they do up
- 1:39:26in the north.
- 1:39:28Kenzie, that is
- 1:39:28so freaking cool.
- 1:39:30Like if you think
- 1:39:31about like, I
- 1:39:32know we're
- 1:39:32geeking out here,
- 1:39:33but this is so
- 1:39:34cool to be like
- 1:39:36the white shark,
- 1:39:37like Jaws, you
- 1:39:38know, everybody's
- 1:39:39afraid of it.
- 1:39:40You know, there's
- 1:39:40a whole history
- 1:39:41behind it.
- 1:39:41We're hitting 50
- 1:39:42years of Jaws in
- 1:39:43June this year.
- 1:39:46And you get to
- 1:39:47discover like in
- 1:39:48the 50th year of
- 1:39:49Jaws, that
- 1:39:50there's like what
- 1:39:51they're doing in
- 1:39:52this area that
- 1:39:53really we haven't
- 1:39:54known ever, you
- 1:39:55know, that is so
- 1:39:57cool because, you
- 1:39:58know, down
- 1:39:59the road.
- 1:39:5910 years, 20
- 1:40:00years down the
- 1:40:00road, you're
- 1:40:01going to tell
- 1:40:02people like,
- 1:40:02yeah, I helped
- 1:40:03figure this out.
- 1:40:04Like I was that
- 1:40:04was my master's.
- 1:40:05I mean, I my
- 1:40:06master's.
- 1:40:07I don't I mean,
- 1:40:09unfortunately, I
- 1:40:10don't have like
- 1:40:10amazing data in a
- 1:40:12sense that like I
- 1:40:13am not answering
- 1:40:13all of these like
- 1:40:14massively in
- 1:40:15question.
- 1:40:15But I like to
- 1:40:17think that I am a
- 1:40:18part of the
- 1:40:19stepping stones
- 1:40:19and the building
- 1:40:20blocks to kind of
- 1:40:21understanding
- 1:40:22their movements
- 1:40:22on down here.
- 1:40:23And so that's
- 1:40:24kind of cool to
- 1:40:24kind of be a part
- 1:40:25of that story.
- 1:40:25And as we learn
- 1:40:26more, I can know
- 1:40:27that like I
- 1:40:28played my
- 1:40:28part in that.
- 1:40:28So like what you
- 1:40:29were saying,
- 1:40:30yeah, but I wish
- 1:40:31I could answer
- 1:40:31some of these
- 1:40:32bigger like, you
- 1:40:33know, under like
- 1:40:34questions that we
- 1:40:34can always
- 1:40:35asking, you know,
- 1:40:36where are
- 1:40:37they mating?
- 1:40:37You know, what
- 1:40:38are they eating
- 1:40:39on down there?
- 1:40:39Are they
- 1:40:39targeting
- 1:40:40certain areas?
- 1:40:41Are there
- 1:40:41hotspots?
- 1:40:41There's like so
- 1:40:42much we
- 1:40:43want to know.
- 1:40:43And that's like
- 1:40:44when you're
- 1:40:44talking about
- 1:40:44questions, like
- 1:40:45my mind just
- 1:40:46starts reeling.
- 1:40:47I'm like, even
- 1:40:48the master's, you
- 1:40:48know, my advisor,
- 1:40:49he always tells
- 1:40:51me he's like real
- 1:40:52it in real it.
- 1:40:52And he's like,
- 1:40:53remember,
- 1:40:54remember the
- 1:40:54scope of your
- 1:40:55master's because
- 1:40:56I, I would have
- 1:40:57turned it into a
- 1:40:58PhD too quickly.
- 1:40:59I mind you. I
- 1:41:00would I'm trying
- 1:41:01to go for a PhD,
- 1:41:02but I mean, not
- 1:41:03at the
- 1:41:03university.
- 1:41:03They don't have a
- 1:41:04PhD, but but he I
- 1:41:06was naturally
- 1:41:07just turning it
- 1:41:08into and I, you
- 1:41:08know, the
- 1:41:09curiosity there,
- 1:41:09which is great.
- 1:41:10But again, you
- 1:41:11have to like reel
- 1:41:12yourself in or
- 1:41:13remind yourself,
- 1:41:13like focus on
- 1:41:14your questions at
- 1:41:15hand because when
- 1:41:16you have too many
- 1:41:17questions, you're
- 1:41:18not you're never
- 1:41:18going to answer
- 1:41:19anything because
- 1:41:20you have so many
- 1:41:20going on.
- 1:41:21You have to like
- 1:41:21focus at like the very the
- 1:41:23foundation, get
- 1:41:24that done.
- 1:41:25And then if more
- 1:41:25projects come out
- 1:41:26of that, great.
- 1:41:27But let's get the
- 1:41:28masters.
- 1:41:28Let's get that
- 1:41:29that foundation
- 1:41:30project done and
- 1:41:31then we can go
- 1:41:31from there.
- 1:41:32It's the
- 1:41:32research ADHD.
- 1:41:34I think every
- 1:41:34student I went
- 1:41:35through it.
- 1:41:35Every student
- 1:41:36goes because
- 1:41:36you're like
- 1:41:37you're asking all
- 1:41:37these questions
- 1:41:37like what
- 1:41:38about this?
- 1:41:38What about this?
- 1:41:39Can we figure out
- 1:41:39this and then
- 1:41:40every supervisor
- 1:41:41is like, hold on
- 1:41:42a second.
- 1:41:42Like let's focus
- 1:41:43on the on
- 1:41:44finishing your
- 1:41:45master's.
- 1:41:45Then we'll you
- 1:41:46know, we'll
- 1:41:46discuss other
- 1:41:47papers and other
- 1:41:48questions.
- 1:41:48And I think it's
- 1:41:49awesome.
- 1:41:50Like it's awesome
- 1:41:50to see because
- 1:41:51that's when the
- 1:41:52passion
- 1:41:52hits, right?
- 1:41:53That's when you
- 1:41:53know, like
- 1:41:54research is for
- 1:41:55me like research
- 1:41:55is is here.
- 1:41:56Like I've hit the
- 1:41:57jackpot in terms
- 1:41:58of what I want to
- 1:41:59learn and you
- 1:42:00know, what I want
- 1:42:01to find out and
- 1:42:01what I want to
- 1:42:02tell the world
- 1:42:02like the story to
- 1:42:03tell the world.
- 1:42:04It is a story is
- 1:42:05essentially what
- 1:42:06you're saying,
- 1:42:06but you're using
- 1:42:07math to kind of
- 1:42:08figure it out,
- 1:42:08you know, and
- 1:42:09geolocation to to
- 1:42:11figure it out.
- 1:42:11So I just
- 1:42:12love that.
- 1:42:13I think
- 1:42:13it's cool.
- 1:42:14And and and to be
- 1:42:14honest, like
- 1:42:15speaking of
- 1:42:15storytelling,
- 1:42:16you're
- 1:42:16doing this.
- 1:42:17You're doing a
- 1:42:18full time job.
- 1:42:19You're doing a
- 1:42:20master's and then
- 1:42:21you've taken it
- 1:42:22upon yourself to
- 1:42:23be like, hey,
- 1:42:24yeah, let's talk
- 1:42:24about it.
- 1:42:24Let's talk about
- 1:42:25to the public.
- 1:42:26Like, let's just
- 1:42:26go on social
- 1:42:27media and I'll
- 1:42:28just I'll, you
- 1:42:29know, riff on
- 1:42:29some videos and
- 1:42:30I'll just publish
- 1:42:30them so that
- 1:42:31people can get to
- 1:42:32know one
- 1:42:32what I do.
- 1:42:33But also what I
- 1:42:34love what you
- 1:42:35were doing with
- 1:42:35your parents back
- 1:42:36when you were
- 1:42:37four or five
- 1:42:37years old
- 1:42:38snorkeling in the
- 1:42:39keys and being
- 1:42:39like, hey, have
- 1:42:40you seen this
- 1:42:41like, you know,
- 1:42:41blue parrotfish?
- 1:42:42Like it does.
- 1:42:43It eats algae and
- 1:42:43it does this.
- 1:42:44You're telling
- 1:42:45that to to
- 1:42:46the people.
- 1:42:47Obviously, you're
- 1:42:47busy with a lot
- 1:42:48of things.
- 1:42:49What made you
- 1:42:49decide to be
- 1:42:50like, look, I'm
- 1:42:51going to start
- 1:42:52talking about not
- 1:42:53only the work
- 1:42:53that I'm doing,
- 1:42:54but also just
- 1:42:55science in
- 1:42:55general and
- 1:42:56marine biology
- 1:42:57and ocean in
- 1:42:57general.
- 1:42:58There's a
- 1:42:59few things.
- 1:43:00One is more of
- 1:43:01just a funnier
- 1:43:02reason is because
- 1:43:04I always said I
- 1:43:05love learning.
- 1:43:06I think it's just
- 1:43:06in all of us
- 1:43:07scientists.
- 1:43:08But, you know,
- 1:43:10we'll be in a
- 1:43:10conversation and
- 1:43:11someone's talking
- 1:43:12about something
- 1:43:12and then I know a
- 1:43:13fun fact and I'm
- 1:43:13like, oh,
- 1:43:14fun fact.
- 1:43:15And so like I
- 1:43:17love just like
- 1:43:18talking about
- 1:43:19things that I
- 1:43:19found out, you
- 1:43:20know, if it's
- 1:43:21through a paper
- 1:43:22or, you know,
- 1:43:23news article or,
- 1:43:24you know,
- 1:43:24journal, like I I
- 1:43:26love to just
- 1:43:26share the
- 1:43:26information.
- 1:43:27Some, you know,
- 1:43:28my friends share
- 1:43:29a similar
- 1:43:30interest.
- 1:43:31And so we always
- 1:43:32kind of do this
- 1:43:32back and forth.
- 1:43:33And I thought
- 1:43:33about why not
- 1:43:35just do this to
- 1:43:36the
- 1:43:36everyday public?
- 1:43:37And I and I do it
- 1:43:38with like my
- 1:43:38friends and
- 1:43:38family who are
- 1:43:39not even in
- 1:43:40this field.
- 1:43:42And, you know, I
- 1:43:42also and I start
- 1:43:43chatting and next
- 1:43:44thing I know,
- 1:43:44like I've given a
- 1:43:45full 45 minute
- 1:43:46lecture on some
- 1:43:47random topic.
- 1:43:50And I was like,
- 1:43:51why don't I just
- 1:43:51do this for for
- 1:43:53everyone?
- 1:43:54You know, what
- 1:43:55why don't I like
- 1:43:56make this
- 1:43:57accessible?
- 1:43:58And I, you know,
- 1:43:59I think, you
- 1:44:00know, I always
- 1:44:01felt education is
- 1:44:01so important
- 1:44:02because it was so
- 1:44:03inspiring to me.
- 1:44:04And I, you know,
- 1:44:04I had teachers
- 1:44:05growing up that
- 1:44:06made science fun
- 1:44:07and engaging.
- 1:44:09And I always
- 1:44:10wanted to kind of
- 1:44:11be a part of that
- 1:44:12because I feel
- 1:44:12like when
- 1:44:13science, it can
- 1:44:14be boring.
- 1:44:15It can be tough.
- 1:44:16It can be
- 1:44:16frustrating.
- 1:44:17But I think when
- 1:44:18you make it fun
- 1:44:18and engaging and
- 1:44:20you get excited
- 1:44:20about things,
- 1:44:21you're going to
- 1:44:21want to
- 1:44:22learn more.
- 1:44:22And I think
- 1:44:22that's so
- 1:44:23important is
- 1:44:24like, again,
- 1:44:25fostering this
- 1:44:26curiosity, even
- 1:44:27even doesn't have
- 1:44:28to be about
- 1:44:28marine science,
- 1:44:29but just in
- 1:44:29general, like
- 1:44:30just always
- 1:44:31questioning and
- 1:44:32asking and
- 1:44:32looking at the
- 1:44:33world and, you
- 1:44:34know, through
- 1:44:34different eyes
- 1:44:35and, you know,
- 1:44:36different
- 1:44:36perspectives.
- 1:44:37So I kind of
- 1:44:38really wanted to
- 1:44:39one, just have
- 1:44:40fun with it, but
- 1:44:41also just bring
- 1:44:42out fun facts
- 1:44:43because, you
- 1:44:43know, sometimes I
- 1:44:44have a bunch of
- 1:44:45fun facts about
- 1:44:46random fish that
- 1:44:47people have never
- 1:44:47heard of and then
- 1:44:49they get excited
- 1:44:49and they're like,
- 1:44:49oh, I've never
- 1:44:50heard about
- 1:44:50what's that fish.
- 1:44:51And I'm hoping
- 1:44:51that by kind of
- 1:44:53getting them
- 1:44:53excited and, you
- 1:44:54know, showing
- 1:44:55them something
- 1:44:55that they've
- 1:44:55never seen
- 1:44:56before, that
- 1:44:57they're more
- 1:44:57likely to go
- 1:44:58research it
- 1:44:58themselves or
- 1:44:59tell someone else
- 1:45:00about it.
- 1:45:00Or when they see,
- 1:45:01you know, an
- 1:45:02article or, you
- 1:45:03know, here, you
- 1:45:04know, around
- 1:45:05town, they'll be
- 1:45:06like, Oh, I
- 1:45:07actually have a
- 1:45:07fun fact
- 1:45:07about that.
- 1:45:08And then they'll
- 1:45:09start talking.
- 1:45:10So it just helps
- 1:45:10spread education
- 1:45:11and knowledge,
- 1:45:12but I think it's
- 1:45:12just, it's so
- 1:45:14vital right now.
- 1:45:15And I just, and
- 1:45:16again, and making
- 1:45:16it accessible
- 1:45:17because, you
- 1:45:17know, marine
- 1:45:18science can be so
- 1:45:19limiting, just,
- 1:45:20you know, certain
- 1:45:20groups or, you
- 1:45:21know, especially
- 1:45:21being around
- 1:45:22Florida, like a
- 1:45:23lot of people in,
- 1:45:24you know, in the
- 1:45:25middle of the
- 1:45:26United States and
- 1:45:26landlocked states
- 1:45:27that, you know,
- 1:45:27don't have access
- 1:45:28to the beach 30
- 1:45:29minutes
- 1:45:29down the road.
- 1:45:30And so some of
- 1:45:31these marine
- 1:45:31science classes
- 1:45:32aren't available
- 1:45:32because the water
- 1:45:33is not there. And
- 1:45:34so it's only when
- 1:45:35they come down in
- 1:45:35these states. But
- 1:45:36when with social
- 1:45:37media, we have a
- 1:45:38way to access the
- 1:45:39entire world.
- 1:45:40And so it's, it's
- 1:45:41always good to
- 1:45:42kind of just put
- 1:45:42it out there. And
- 1:45:43so that was kind
- 1:45:44of my thought
- 1:45:44process was, I
- 1:45:46love talking
- 1:45:46about science. I
- 1:45:47love educating
- 1:45:47people. Why not
- 1:45:49do it through
- 1:45:50social media and
- 1:45:51use the Internet
- 1:45:52as like the best
- 1:45:53educational tool
- 1:45:54that there is
- 1:45:55right now.
- 1:45:55You are preaching
- 1:45:56to the choir, my
- 1:45:57friend, you are
- 1:45:58preaching to the
- 1:45:59choir. And I love
- 1:45:59that, though. But
- 1:46:00I think that's
- 1:46:01the thing is it's
- 1:46:01fun for you.
- 1:46:02Again, it's fun
- 1:46:03for you. You're
- 1:46:03already doing it
- 1:46:04with your family
- 1:46:04and friends.
- 1:46:05Right. And maybe
- 1:46:06after a while,
- 1:46:07your family and
- 1:46:07friends like,
- 1:46:07okay, can do
- 1:46:08like, hold your
- 1:46:09horses. That's
- 1:46:10happened all the
- 1:46:10time. My wife
- 1:46:11will just like
- 1:46:12glaze over and be
- 1:46:13like, okay,
- 1:46:13Andrew, get it
- 1:46:14out of your
- 1:46:14system and move
- 1:46:15on. But that's
- 1:46:16the thing. You go
- 1:46:17to people like
- 1:46:17you don't know
- 1:46:18who you're gonna
- 1:46:19who you're gonna
- 1:46:19do. So is that
- 1:46:20what like when
- 1:46:20you like, what
- 1:46:21was the goal?
- 1:46:22Because because
- 1:46:23like, let's be
- 1:46:23honest, like
- 1:46:24social media is
- 1:46:24its own thing.
- 1:46:25Content is not a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's
- 1:46:25content creation
- 1:46:26is its own thing.
- 1:46:27People make their
- 1:46:28living off of
- 1:46:29content
- 1:46:29creation. Some
- 1:46:30even that are
- 1:46:30like marine
- 1:46:31biology just make
- 1:46:32like, you know,
- 1:46:33they'll have
- 1:46:33like, there's
- 1:46:34a creator fund
- 1:46:34for each platform
- 1:46:35and stuff. And
- 1:46:36they could make
- 1:46:36money off of
- 1:46:37this. What
- 1:46:38was your goal
- 1:46:39when you start,
- 1:46:40like you pick
- 1:46:40tick tock, right?
- 1:46:42Obviously,
- 1:46:42like I assume
- 1:46:43pandemic tick
- 1:46:44tock started to
- 1:46:44blow up. You
- 1:46:45started to see it
- 1:46:46like, Hey, let's
- 1:46:47start using
- 1:46:47it. It's a fun
- 1:46:48platform. What
- 1:46:50was the goal when
- 1:46:51you first started
- 1:46:52was it to
- 1:46:52get as many
- 1:46:53followers as
- 1:46:53possible? Was it
- 1:46:54get like big,
- 1:46:55that kind of
- 1:46:56stuff? What was
- 1:46:56the goal?
- 1:46:58So I mean, it's
- 1:46:58natural to want
- 1:46:59followers and a
- 1:47:01big following,
- 1:47:01but that wasn't
- 1:47:02the push. That
- 1:47:04wasn't the
- 1:47:04reasoning behind
- 1:47:05it. The followers
- 1:47:06would just be an
- 1:47:08added bonus to
- 1:47:08get the
- 1:47:09information
- 1:47:09out to a broader
- 1:47:10audience. I just
- 1:47:12wanted to promote
- 1:47:14science. I just
- 1:47:15wanted to
- 1:47:15talk. I wanted
- 1:47:16to get it out
- 1:47:16there. And I
- 1:47:18always worry
- 1:47:21about the being
- 1:47:22on social. I was
- 1:47:23so skeptical
- 1:47:25about doing
- 1:47:25this for so long.
- 1:47:26So I never wanted
- 1:47:27someone to think
- 1:47:28that I was doing
- 1:47:29it strictly for
- 1:47:30the money
- 1:47:30or to be some
- 1:47:31type of
- 1:47:31influencer
- 1:47:32personality.
- 1:47:34That's not the
- 1:47:34goal. If they
- 1:47:36were something
- 1:47:36to come up
- 1:47:37because of being
- 1:47:38on social media,
- 1:47:39great, that's
- 1:47:39just a bonus. But
- 1:47:41that's not the
- 1:47:42root of it.
- 1:47:42That's not the
- 1:47:43reason why I was
- 1:47:43doing it. I
- 1:47:44wanted to do it
- 1:47:44because I
- 1:47:45loved it.
- 1:47:46And I think, you
- 1:47:47know, we have
- 1:47:49misinformation
- 1:47:50can be spread so
- 1:47:51easily. So I want
- 1:47:52to be a part of
- 1:47:53the person, you
- 1:47:53know, people that
- 1:47:54are spreading
- 1:47:54correct
- 1:47:55information and
- 1:47:56showing
- 1:47:56people how to
- 1:47:57how to research
- 1:47:57how to look for,
- 1:47:58you know,
- 1:48:01information
- 1:48:01that's, you know,
- 1:48:02incorrect, or
- 1:48:02be able to
- 1:48:03question things.
- 1:48:04You'd be like,
- 1:48:04well, you know,
- 1:48:05that sounds a
- 1:48:06little odd.
- 1:48:06Let me look
- 1:48:07this up, you
- 1:48:08know, or oh, that
- 1:48:08was a that's a
- 1:48:09neat fact. Let me
- 1:48:10look this up. So
- 1:48:11I just
- 1:48:11wanted to be
- 1:48:13part of the push
- 1:48:13to just promote
- 1:48:16more learning.
- 1:48:17And so like the
- 1:48:18follower thing,
- 1:48:19you know,
- 1:48:19I picked
- 1:48:20TikTok just
- 1:48:20because it was so
- 1:48:23easily accessible
- 1:48:23to so many people
- 1:48:24without
- 1:48:25necessarily
- 1:48:25having to
- 1:48:25have followers,
- 1:48:26like if you have
- 1:48:27a Facebook or
- 1:48:27Instagram, they
- 1:48:28usually have to
- 1:48:28follow
- 1:48:29you for you
- 1:48:30to pop up on on
- 1:48:31their on their
- 1:48:32like page or
- 1:48:32their feed. But
- 1:48:34with TikTok, they
- 1:48:35can follow
- 1:48:35you so they
- 1:48:36can see more of
- 1:48:36your stuff, but
- 1:48:37your videos just
- 1:48:39get sent out to
- 1:48:39the world. And so
- 1:48:41I think that will
- 1:48:42experiment in
- 1:48:43front of
- 1:48:43everybody. Right?
- 1:48:44Yeah. Yeah. And
- 1:48:45it's I mean, it's
- 1:48:45nerve
- 1:48:46wracking knowing
- 1:48:46that you're
- 1:48:47putting yourself
- 1:48:47out there for
- 1:48:48millions of
- 1:48:50people to
- 1:48:51critique and
- 1:48:52criticize and,
- 1:48:53you know,
- 1:48:54question you. And
- 1:48:56so you have to
- 1:48:57like, take that into
- 1:48:57consideration.
- 1:48:58You're like, are
- 1:48:58you prepared
- 1:48:59for people to
- 1:49:01question you, you
- 1:49:02know, or they
- 1:49:03might make fun of
- 1:49:04you, you know,
- 1:49:04for whatever
- 1:49:05reason. So you
- 1:49:06kind of have
- 1:49:06it's like a
- 1:49:07mental
- 1:49:07preparation. But
- 1:49:08also, there was
- 1:49:09another part of
- 1:49:10it that I thought
- 1:49:11it'd be a good
- 1:49:11practice for me.
- 1:49:12You know, as a
- 1:49:13scientist and
- 1:49:14educator, I
- 1:49:14always feel like
- 1:49:15it's important to
- 1:49:16be able to relay
- 1:49:18science to all
- 1:49:20audiences. So we
- 1:49:21go to
- 1:49:21conferences, and
- 1:49:22we use all the
- 1:49:23scientific
- 1:49:23jargon, and we
- 1:49:24talk to
- 1:49:24people that
- 1:49:24are experts in
- 1:49:25what we do. And
- 1:49:26that's great. But
- 1:49:28we need to be
- 1:49:28able to take that
- 1:49:29to the public,
- 1:49:30because if the
- 1:49:30public gets
- 1:49:31excited, we get
- 1:49:32more people
- 1:49:32excited. That
- 1:49:33means usually
- 1:49:33more funding for
- 1:49:34us to do
- 1:49:35more work.
- 1:49:35That's true. So
- 1:49:37when more people
- 1:49:38know about it,
- 1:49:38more people are
- 1:49:39like, Well, yeah,
- 1:49:39I'll donate to
- 1:49:40that. Or yeah,
- 1:49:41I'm more
- 1:49:41likely to help
- 1:49:42pay for that. Or
- 1:49:43I'm more, you
- 1:49:43know, it creates
- 1:49:44just a better
- 1:49:45system overall.
- 1:49:47Yeah. But I
- 1:49:50just, I, I
- 1:49:51think being able
- 1:49:52to also explain
- 1:49:53concepts to
- 1:49:54experts, to the
- 1:49:57general public,
- 1:49:58and to children,
- 1:50:00just makes almost
- 1:50:00solidifies
- 1:50:01concepts in
- 1:50:02your head and
- 1:50:02makes you
- 1:50:03understand like,
- 1:50:03do I actually
- 1:50:04really know what
- 1:50:05I'm talking
- 1:50:05about? I know
- 1:50:06that sounds weird
- 1:50:06to say, but you
- 1:50:07know, you get
- 1:50:08almost
- 1:50:09regurgitating
- 1:50:09some of these
- 1:50:10textbook or, you
- 1:50:11know, scientific
- 1:50:12article
- 1:50:13sentences,
- 1:50:14because
- 1:50:14you're like,
- 1:50:14All right, this
- 1:50:15is what it says.
- 1:50:15And you just say
- 1:50:16it, and you state
- 1:50:17it. And that's
- 1:50:17just the fact.
- 1:50:18But it's not
- 1:50:19until you're
- 1:50:20talking to
- 1:50:21everyday
- 1:50:22people that don't
- 1:50:23work in that, I
- 1:50:24don't use those
- 1:50:24types of terms,
- 1:50:25or, you know,
- 1:50:25might not know
- 1:50:26the anatomy of
- 1:50:27sharks and
- 1:50:27fish. And so
- 1:50:28you're talking
- 1:50:29about, you know,
- 1:50:30cartilaginous,
- 1:50:31you know, fish
- 1:50:31and a plasma
- 1:50:32branks, you know,
- 1:50:34looking at the
- 1:50:34highway, highway
- 1:50:35arch, they
- 1:50:36don't know what
- 1:50:36that means. So
- 1:50:38being able to
- 1:50:39take those higher
- 1:50:40level concepts
- 1:50:41that you've
- 1:50:41become an expert
- 1:50:42in, and then
- 1:50:42relay them to
- 1:50:43the general
- 1:50:43public in a way
- 1:50:44that they can
- 1:50:45understand and
- 1:50:45get excited about
- 1:50:46was kind of also
- 1:50:47that push where it's
- 1:50:47like, it also
- 1:50:48helps me practice
- 1:50:49as a scientist to
- 1:50:50really understand
- 1:50:51the concepts that
- 1:50:52I'm learning, and
- 1:50:54also researching.
- 1:50:55So there were so
- 1:50:56many points to
- 1:50:56it, but none of
- 1:50:57it really ever
- 1:50:58came from, I want
- 1:50:59to get famous,
- 1:51:00and I want more
- 1:51:00followers. That
- 1:51:01was never, no, I
- 1:51:03mean, I don't
- 1:51:03even have that
- 1:51:04many followers.
- 1:51:04And that's fine.
- 1:51:05I just love doing
- 1:51:06it. And I think
- 1:51:07that if, and I
- 1:51:08always
- 1:51:09thought, is
- 1:51:09my duty as a
- 1:51:10scientist to
- 1:51:11educate people
- 1:51:12and put science
- 1:51:13out there for
- 1:51:14everyone. And so
- 1:51:16I thought, you
- 1:51:16know, if I am
- 1:51:18able to inspire
- 1:51:19or educate a
- 1:51:21handful of
- 1:51:22people, even one
- 1:51:22person, if one
- 1:51:23person got
- 1:51:24inspired,
- 1:51:24inspired by a
- 1:51:26video I made,
- 1:51:27then I have done
- 1:51:28my duty as an
- 1:51:29educator, as a
- 1:51:29scientist to, you
- 1:51:31know, help future
- 1:51:32generations or,
- 1:51:33you know, inspire
- 1:51:33someone else to
- 1:51:34kind of learn
- 1:51:34more or
- 1:51:35pursue a career.
- 1:51:37I love that. I
- 1:51:38love that. And to
- 1:51:39kind of push back
- 1:51:40on your like, I
- 1:51:40don't have many
- 1:51:41followers. I hear
- 1:51:43this a lot from a
- 1:51:44lot of people,
- 1:51:45right? It's
- 1:51:45like, I don't
- 1:51:46know. And I say
- 1:51:46the same thing. I
- 1:51:47don't have a lot
- 1:51:47of followers.
- 1:51:48Somebody told me
- 1:51:49this one time,
- 1:51:49because like,
- 1:51:50when I first
- 1:51:50started the
- 1:51:50podcast, I
- 1:51:51would get
- 1:51:51like, maybe 10
- 1:51:53downloads, you
- 1:51:54know, off the
- 1:51:54bat, and you're
- 1:51:54like, Oh,
- 1:51:55nobody's
- 1:51:55listening to my
- 1:51:56stuff. Then I get
- 1:51:57like 50
- 1:51:57downloads,
- 1:51:58I'm still
- 1:51:58complaining,
- 1:51:59because I, you
- 1:51:59know, hear other
- 1:52:00Joe Rogan gets a
- 1:52:01million and all
- 1:52:02this, and
- 1:52:02everybody thinks
- 1:52:02that, Oh, I
- 1:52:03should be getting
- 1:52:03that.
- 1:52:05Somebody told me
- 1:52:05this, if you put
- 1:52:06like, if you have
- 1:52:07100 followers,
- 1:52:08100 downloads,
- 1:52:10and you put 100
- 1:52:10people in a
- 1:52:11classroom, that's
- 1:52:12the standing room
- 1:52:13only in a
- 1:52:13classroom, right?
- 1:52:14Like, that's,
- 1:52:15that's a huge
- 1:52:15amount of people
- 1:52:16when you're
- 1:52:17presenting in
- 1:52:17front of a
- 1:52:17classroom, like
- 1:52:18in person. I'm
- 1:52:19looking at your,
- 1:52:20your, your
- 1:52:21profile here on
- 1:52:21TikTok, you have
- 1:52:22at this point,
- 1:52:23you have 691. And
- 1:52:25I'm sure that's
- 1:52:25increasing
- 1:52:26followers. That's
- 1:52:27a lecture hall.
- 1:52:28That's almost two
- 1:52:28lecture halls.
- 1:52:29That's a huge
- 1:52:29lecture hall of
- 1:52:30people that
- 1:52:31you're teaching
- 1:52:32each and every
- 1:52:33time you post
- 1:52:33that could
- 1:52:34potentially see
- 1:52:35it. And if
- 1:52:35you're on
- 1:52:35TikTok, as you
- 1:52:36mentioned, the
- 1:52:38amount is
- 1:52:38probably more
- 1:52:39than that, that
- 1:52:39are actually
- 1:52:39seeing your, your
- 1:52:41videos, right?
- 1:52:42Because it's not
- 1:52:42just to your
- 1:52:43followers, it's
- 1:52:43to everybody, you
- 1:52:45know, you just
- 1:52:46never know who
- 1:52:46you're being
- 1:52:46presented to. So
- 1:52:47I want you to
- 1:52:47think about that
- 1:52:48way too. I want
- 1:52:48everybody think
- 1:52:49about that. Like
- 1:52:50the audience here
- 1:52:50who are
- 1:52:51listening, I was
- 1:52:51like, you never
- 1:52:52know who's going
- 1:52:53to see you. You
- 1:52:54never know, like,
- 1:52:55what impact you
- 1:52:56might have. And I
- 1:52:56love that, that
- 1:52:57the thought of
- 1:52:58like, if I can
- 1:52:58just get one
- 1:52:59person to really
- 1:53:00get excited about
- 1:53:01the ocean, who
- 1:53:02knows what that
- 1:53:03person will do
- 1:53:03with that
- 1:53:04information,
- 1:53:05you just,
- 1:53:05never know. You
- 1:53:06never know who's
- 1:53:07listening. You
- 1:53:08never know what
- 1:53:08they're going to
- 1:53:08do. And I think
- 1:53:09that's the power
- 1:53:10of being a
- 1:53:11creator and, and
- 1:53:12talking about
- 1:53:13stuff. And we all
- 1:53:14get criticism. We
- 1:53:15all get bots. We
- 1:53:16all get people
- 1:53:17who take
- 1:53:17messages, you
- 1:53:18know, politically
- 1:53:19and all this kind
- 1:53:19of stuff. And
- 1:53:20they, they don't
- 1:53:21know really what
- 1:53:22they're talking
- 1:53:22about. I had a
- 1:53:23guy the other day
- 1:53:24on my, on, I
- 1:53:26forget what
- 1:53:27platform it was,
- 1:53:28but talking about
- 1:53:29the importance
- 1:53:29of, I did an
- 1:53:30episode a couple
- 1:53:31of weeks ago,
- 1:53:31talking about the
- 1:53:32importance of
- 1:53:33talking about the
- 1:53:33ocean, how
- 1:53:34important it is
- 1:53:34to talk to your
- 1:53:35friends
- 1:53:35and family.
- 1:53:35As you know,
- 1:53:36right? You do it,
- 1:53:36you do the same
- 1:53:37thing. And the
- 1:53:38guy was like,
- 1:53:38well, who cares
- 1:53:39about the ocean?
- 1:53:39Like, there are
- 1:53:40so many homeless
- 1:53:41people in
- 1:53:41California. And
- 1:53:42I'm like, okay,
- 1:53:44yeah, totally get
- 1:53:44it. Like, that's
- 1:53:46not what we're
- 1:53:46talking about
- 1:53:46here. Like
- 1:53:47completely
- 1:53:47different issues,
- 1:53:48you know, but I
- 1:53:49get it. Like,
- 1:53:49it's, there's
- 1:53:50other people have
- 1:53:51other issues. But
- 1:53:51the, you know,
- 1:53:53and, and you just
- 1:53:53never know who
- 1:53:54you're getting to
- 1:53:55watch it, what
- 1:53:55they're going to
- 1:53:56comment. And you
- 1:53:56just have to like
- 1:53:57answer those
- 1:53:58properly. And,
- 1:53:59and, you know, I,
- 1:54:01I like to try and
- 1:54:02be nice to
- 1:54:02everybody.
- 1:54:03There's some, I'm
- 1:54:04a little more
- 1:54:04aggressive with.
- 1:54:05But every
- 1:54:05once in a while,
- 1:54:06you know, there's
- 1:54:07people who are
- 1:54:07just genuinely
- 1:54:08worried about
- 1:54:08other things in
- 1:54:09the world. And
- 1:54:09you're like, I
- 1:54:10get it. I, I
- 1:54:10responded. I was
- 1:54:11like, yeah, I
- 1:54:12hope you do
- 1:54:13something about
- 1:54:13it. Like, I would
- 1:54:14love to hear. I'd
- 1:54:15love to see what
- 1:54:16you create online
- 1:54:17to help with that
- 1:54:17homeless. Because
- 1:54:18that's obviously
- 1:54:18something that's
- 1:54:19important, but
- 1:54:20not what we're
- 1:54:20talking about
- 1:54:21here. So I
- 1:54:21appreciate the
- 1:54:22comment. But, you
- 1:54:23know, thank you.
- 1:54:23Yeah, but that's,
- 1:54:24you know, but,
- 1:54:25but I've also had
- 1:54:27a lot of people
- 1:54:27who have changed
- 1:54:29their lives
- 1:54:29because of it.
- 1:54:30They've either
- 1:54:30gone to do a PhD
- 1:54:31or they've gone
- 1:54:32to change and
- 1:54:33start an
- 1:54:34organization and
- 1:54:35all that kind of stuff.
- 1:54:35So you just never
- 1:54:36know who's going
- 1:54:37to listen. And
- 1:54:39it's also cool.
- 1:54:40Some of the
- 1:54:41stories you
- 1:54:41cover, we just
- 1:54:42talked about this
- 1:54:43before we press
- 1:54:43record and I hope
- 1:54:44it's okay to talk
- 1:54:45about this. But
- 1:54:46one of your
- 1:54:46recent, I guess
- 1:54:47it was a series
- 1:54:47of episode, you
- 1:54:48did a couple of
- 1:54:49parts. They gave
- 1:54:49like four or five
- 1:54:50parts of this.
- 1:54:51Could you talk
- 1:54:51about this recent
- 1:54:52one? It got a lot
- 1:54:54of views, like
- 1:54:55almost 40,000
- 1:54:56views on that
- 1:54:57first video. What
- 1:54:59was the scenario
- 1:55:00and why did you
- 1:55:01feel the need to
- 1:55:01comment?
- 1:55:03So it's all so
- 1:55:05ridiculous. And
- 1:55:05it always makes
- 1:55:06me laugh. What
- 1:55:07gets popular on
- 1:55:09the internet. And
- 1:55:10it's always this
- 1:55:11just strange
- 1:55:12thing. And it's
- 1:55:12always the one
- 1:55:13thing you least
- 1:55:14expect. You know,
- 1:55:15I was I think I
- 1:55:15was telling you
- 1:55:16before this, the
- 1:55:16videos that I put
- 1:55:17the time and
- 1:55:17effort to, you
- 1:55:18know, do their
- 1:55:19background
- 1:55:19research to find
- 1:55:20the good images,
- 1:55:21then to record
- 1:55:23and then to edit,
- 1:55:23you know, their
- 1:55:24hours of time and
- 1:55:25effort. You know,
- 1:55:26they get views, I
- 1:55:27get some
- 1:55:27comments. I'm
- 1:55:27like, Yeah, it's
- 1:55:28awesome. The one
- 1:55:29that I really
- 1:55:29wake up in the
- 1:55:30morning, do a
- 1:55:31response
- 1:55:31video to.
- 1:55:32That took me five
- 1:55:34minutes maximum
- 1:55:35to do gets the
- 1:55:36most views. But
- 1:55:37the video was,
- 1:55:39and I must date
- 1:55:40this, this video,
- 1:55:41this statement is
- 1:55:43fake. It was a
- 1:55:44created
- 1:55:45statement. But at
- 1:55:45the time, I
- 1:55:46wasn't sure.
- 1:55:47Right. So this
- 1:55:49woman online
- 1:55:49stated that she
- 1:55:50was diving with
- 1:55:51sharks and was
- 1:55:52wearing a sequin
- 1:55:53bikini and had an
- 1:55:55encounter with
- 1:55:55the shark. And
- 1:55:57the internet lost
- 1:55:58its mind. You
- 1:55:58know, there's a
- 1:55:59lot of people
- 1:55:59that I was and I
- 1:56:00was I was kind of
- 1:56:01happy to
- 1:56:01see that.
- 1:56:02Everyone was
- 1:56:02like, What are
- 1:56:02you doing? You
- 1:56:03would you should
- 1:56:03never do that.
- 1:56:04You look like a
- 1:56:05giant fish. So I
- 1:56:07was happy to see
- 1:56:07that people were
- 1:56:08recognizing,
- 1:56:09Yeah, that's
- 1:56:09probably a bad
- 1:56:10idea. So I just
- 1:56:12commented one
- 1:56:13stating, Yes,
- 1:56:14everyone saying
- 1:56:15this is a bad
- 1:56:16idea. Yes, it is.
- 1:56:18You know, the
- 1:56:19sequins reflect
- 1:56:20the light and
- 1:56:21they can mimic
- 1:56:22fish scales. And
- 1:56:24when you're
- 1:56:24diving with
- 1:56:25things that eat
- 1:56:26fish, you don't
- 1:56:28want to look like
- 1:56:28that. And I'm not
- 1:56:29saying just
- 1:56:30because she was
- 1:56:30wearing that,
- 1:56:31that initiative, you know,
- 1:56:32she did that fake
- 1:56:34interaction.
- 1:56:35Right. But you
- 1:56:36don't want to put
- 1:56:37yourself in any
- 1:56:37way, shape or
- 1:56:39form in harm or
- 1:56:40in a way that
- 1:56:41could create or
- 1:56:42allow the
- 1:56:43interaction to
- 1:56:44potentially
- 1:56:44happen. I'm gonna
- 1:56:45say it that way.
- 1:56:46Yeah. So you just
- 1:56:48want to be
- 1:56:48cognizant of what
- 1:56:49you're doing.
- 1:56:50Yeah. So I stated
- 1:56:51that one. Just
- 1:56:53don't wear that.
- 1:56:54I would suggest
- 1:56:54not wearing that.
- 1:56:55If you if you
- 1:56:56really want to
- 1:56:56wear it, wear a
- 1:56:57wetsuit or wear,
- 1:56:58you know, a sun
- 1:56:59shirt, wear
- 1:56:59something that
- 1:57:01takes away that
- 1:57:01shimes. I
- 1:57:02always say the
- 1:57:02same thing with
- 1:57:03jewelry does the
- 1:57:04same thing. You
- 1:57:05know, people go
- 1:57:05swimming in
- 1:57:06jewelry and I've
- 1:57:07actually had more
- 1:57:08closer
- 1:57:09interactions with
- 1:57:10barracuda than I
- 1:57:11have with sharks
- 1:57:12and I've swam
- 1:57:12with hundreds of
- 1:57:13sharks. But the
- 1:57:15few barracuda
- 1:57:15they, you know,
- 1:57:16again, I
- 1:57:17mentioned my
- 1:57:17bracelet keeping
- 1:57:18it on and you're
- 1:57:18sitting there
- 1:57:19holding it
- 1:57:19because that
- 1:57:20little bit of
- 1:57:21shine kind of
- 1:57:22looks like a fish
- 1:57:22scale. And again,
- 1:57:23even if it's not
- 1:57:24necessarily
- 1:57:25looking like a
- 1:57:26fish, it's
- 1:57:27something
- 1:57:27different in the
- 1:57:28environment that
- 1:57:28something is
- 1:57:29gonna be curious
- 1:57:29about and then go
- 1:57:30investigate it to
- 1:57:31figure out
- 1:57:32what is this? So
- 1:57:33you don't you
- 1:57:34don't want to
- 1:57:35draw that attention that
- 1:57:36that's not the
- 1:57:36attention you're
- 1:57:37looking for about
- 1:57:37being in the
- 1:57:38ocean. And you
- 1:57:38know, most times
- 1:57:39for shark badges,
- 1:57:40we're going to
- 1:57:40find sharks, but
- 1:57:41most people that
- 1:57:41are swimming in
- 1:57:42the ocean aren't
- 1:57:43wanting, they
- 1:57:44don't want to
- 1:57:45find them. So I
- 1:57:46made the video
- 1:57:47and I wanted to
- 1:57:48make it a few
- 1:57:49part series. I
- 1:57:50wanted to want to
- 1:57:51address the
- 1:57:51video, but then I
- 1:57:52wanted to bring
- 1:57:53up some good
- 1:57:53points because it
- 1:57:54gave the perfect
- 1:57:55timing to talk
- 1:57:56about safe swim
- 1:57:57practices. You
- 1:57:58know, when you're
- 1:58:00going on the
- 1:58:00water, you have
- 1:58:01to, you know,
- 1:58:01you're going
- 1:58:02into another
- 1:58:03environment,
- 1:58:04you're going into
- 1:58:04basically the
- 1:58:05home of all these
- 1:58:06animals,
- 1:58:07including sharks,
- 1:58:08and you have to
- 1:58:09be aware of what
- 1:58:09you're doing and
- 1:58:10you want to make
- 1:58:11sure you are
- 1:58:11staying safe. You
- 1:58:13know, the reason
- 1:58:13we have those
- 1:58:14flags of the
- 1:58:14beach and we have
- 1:58:15lifeguards and we
- 1:58:15have all these
- 1:58:16signage, you
- 1:58:17know, just
- 1:58:17explaining the
- 1:58:18area is for
- 1:58:19information to
- 1:58:20make sure that
- 1:58:21you are safe as a
- 1:58:22swimmer when you
- 1:58:22when you make the
- 1:58:23decision to get
- 1:58:24in the water. And
- 1:58:25so I talked
- 1:58:26about, you know,
- 1:58:26not swimming near
- 1:58:27a fishing
- 1:58:27fishermen, you
- 1:58:29know, one, you
- 1:58:30don't want to get
- 1:58:30caught up in the
- 1:58:31line. They also
- 1:58:32have active bait.
- 1:58:33That bait is in
- 1:58:34the water, trying
- 1:58:36to attract
- 1:58:36everything in
- 1:58:37that area. The
- 1:58:38last thing you
- 1:58:38want to do is be
- 1:58:39near something
- 1:58:40that's being
- 1:58:41attracted to that
- 1:58:41area. So, so you
- 1:58:44don't so that's
- 1:58:44just unsafe and
- 1:58:45they kind of fall
- 1:58:46on the same
- 1:58:46lines, peers,
- 1:58:48people are
- 1:58:48actively fishing
- 1:58:49all along those
- 1:58:50peers, you don't
- 1:58:51want to get
- 1:58:51caught up in the
- 1:58:53lines and also
- 1:58:53there's so much
- 1:58:54fish in the water
- 1:58:55that again, it's
- 1:58:55attracting
- 1:58:56everything and
- 1:58:57anything that air
- 1:58:57to that region,
- 1:58:58you don't want to
- 1:58:59be there. And
- 1:59:00then marinas,
- 1:59:01especially,
- 1:59:01you know,
- 1:59:02a lot of people
- 1:59:02don't think,
- 1:59:03well, people are
- 1:59:03not fishing at
- 1:59:04marinas, but a
- 1:59:05lot of fishermen
- 1:59:05come off their
- 1:59:06boats and fillet
- 1:59:07their fish and
- 1:59:07throw in the
- 1:59:08carcasses. And
- 1:59:09because after
- 1:59:09days and days of
- 1:59:10this fish and
- 1:59:12sharks and other
- 1:59:12marine animals
- 1:59:13realize this is
- 1:59:14an area for easy
- 1:59:15food. So they're
- 1:59:16more likely to
- 1:59:17hang out there
- 1:59:17and be in that
- 1:59:18area trying to
- 1:59:19get free food. If
- 1:59:20you are to get in
- 1:59:21that water, they
- 1:59:22when they hear at
- 1:59:24splash, they're
- 1:59:24not going to be
- 1:59:25like, Oh, wait,
- 1:59:25that's a person I
- 1:59:26don't want. They
- 1:59:26see that they're
- 1:59:27expecting what
- 1:59:28they've expected,
- 1:59:29you know, every
- 1:59:30day that it's a
- 1:59:31fish carcass and
- 1:59:32they can get in the water.
- 1:59:32And they can eat
- 1:59:32it. So you can,
- 1:59:33you don't want to
- 1:59:34put yourself in a
- 1:59:34situation that
- 1:59:35could lead to a
- 1:59:36bad encounter.
- 1:59:38And then again,
- 1:59:39just like the
- 1:59:40sandbars and one
- 1:59:41that a lot of
- 1:59:42people don't
- 1:59:42realize is that
- 1:59:43sandbars are not
- 1:59:44a safe place to
- 1:59:45be. You know, if
- 1:59:46it's really
- 1:59:46shallow and your
- 1:59:47ankle deep and
- 1:59:47you can see
- 1:59:48everything around
- 1:59:48you, that's fine.
- 1:59:49But also getting
- 1:59:50to that sandbar,
- 1:59:51it usually drops
- 1:59:52off and there's a
- 1:59:53dip and the same
- 1:59:55thing, it falls
- 1:59:55off. And usually
- 1:59:56in those channels
- 1:59:57are a lot of bait
- 1:59:58fish runs. And
- 1:59:59what usually
- 2:00:00follow bait fish,
- 2:00:01larger fish,
- 2:00:02and sharks.
- 2:00:03Again, you don't
- 2:00:03want to put
- 2:00:04yourself in that
- 2:00:04situation while
- 2:00:05you are in the
- 2:00:06middle of a bait
- 2:00:07fish run while
- 2:00:08something is
- 2:00:08actively feeding.
- 2:00:10They're not
- 2:00:10targeting you,
- 2:00:11they're targeting
- 2:00:11that fish, but
- 2:00:12you are now
- 2:00:12caught up in
- 2:00:13that. And that's
- 2:00:14usually when
- 2:00:14those encounters
- 2:00:14happen. So I
- 2:00:16really wanted to
- 2:00:17highlight these
- 2:00:18examples and been
- 2:00:19like, Hey, you
- 2:00:20know, this is a
- 2:00:21bad scenario. I'm
- 2:00:22glad it was fake.
- 2:00:22I'm glad she's
- 2:00:23okay. But let's
- 2:00:24put out some
- 2:00:25reminders of when
- 2:00:26you're in the
- 2:00:26ocean, you are in
- 2:00:27a new environment
- 2:00:28and you have to
- 2:00:29be aware of your
- 2:00:30surroundings.
- 2:00:31And also,
- 2:00:32talk to local
- 2:00:32people, a lot of
- 2:00:33people that go
- 2:00:33and travel, you
- 2:00:35know, there are
- 2:00:35certain areas I
- 2:00:36tell you not to
- 2:00:36swim because, you
- 2:00:37know, again,
- 2:00:37people could be
- 2:00:38filleting
- 2:00:38carcasses and,
- 2:00:39you know, putting
- 2:00:40these in the
- 2:00:40water. There
- 2:00:41could just be a
- 2:00:41lot of just fish.
- 2:00:42You just never
- 2:00:42know. And you
- 2:00:43want to make sure
- 2:00:43when you're
- 2:00:44traveling and
- 2:00:44you're going
- 2:00:45swimming in an
- 2:00:45area that's not a
- 2:00:46common swimming
- 2:00:47area that you
- 2:00:47know, that area
- 2:00:48is okay. And
- 2:00:49there's nothing
- 2:00:50in that area that
- 2:00:51could create a
- 2:00:52scenario that
- 2:00:53would be
- 2:00:53negative. So I
- 2:00:55just thought that
- 2:00:56was a good time
- 2:00:56to kind of bring
- 2:00:57up these points.
- 2:00:58And again, and I
- 2:00:59was so happy that
- 2:01:00those videos
- 2:01:01actually,
- 2:01:02did well. But it
- 2:01:03was funny that
- 2:01:04they took five
- 2:01:05minutes to make
- 2:01:05up just being
- 2:01:06like, Hey, don't
- 2:01:07do this, do this.
- 2:01:08And you know, I'm
- 2:01:08glad she's safe.
- 2:01:09But just don't
- 2:01:10wear a
- 2:01:10sequin bikini.
- 2:01:11That's just
- 2:01:14that's just life
- 2:01:14lesson here. Just
- 2:01:15don't see in the
- 2:01:17ocean. But that's
- 2:01:18what I find so
- 2:01:19ironic, I think
- 2:01:20with a lot of
- 2:01:20people who, when
- 2:01:22we do stuff like
- 2:01:23this, when we do
- 2:01:24create content
- 2:01:26and we're
- 2:01:27scientists and we
- 2:01:27want to prepare,
- 2:01:28we want to make
- 2:01:28sure that one,
- 2:01:29we're factually
- 2:01:30correct, we
- 2:01:30double check, we
- 2:01:31confirm. And then
- 2:01:32we present
- 2:01:33something that's
- 2:01:33interesting. So
- 2:01:34we spend a lot of
- 2:01:35time putting
- 2:01:35together videos,
- 2:01:36whether they be
- 2:01:37three minute
- 2:01:38videos, 10 minute
- 2:01:38videos, 20 minute
- 2:01:39videos, whatever
- 2:01:40that might be.
- 2:01:41And then they
- 2:01:41never really take
- 2:01:42off the way we
- 2:01:42hope that they
- 2:01:43would. You know,
- 2:01:43you might get
- 2:01:44some views here.
- 2:01:45You get
- 2:01:45consistently good
- 2:01:46amount of views.
- 2:01:47But then every
- 2:01:48once in a while,
- 2:01:48you'll get one
- 2:01:49that's just like,
- 2:01:49Hey, like, I just
- 2:01:50want to comment
- 2:01:50on this. And then
- 2:01:51I just want to
- 2:01:52like, see what
- 2:01:52happens. And all
- 2:01:53of a sudden, 40K.
- 2:01:54You know, views
- 2:01:55all of it. You're
- 2:01:56like, what are
- 2:01:57you kidding me? I
- 2:01:58spent five
- 2:01:58minutes talking
- 2:01:59about that. But I
- 2:01:59think the thing
- 2:02:00is, is like, what
- 2:02:02we don't
- 2:02:02understand
- 2:02:02sometimes a
- 2:02:03scientist is that
- 2:02:04and even
- 2:02:04communicators
- 2:02:05that people just
- 2:02:05want, like
- 2:02:06relevant content
- 2:02:07that's like you.
- 2:02:09That's that's
- 2:02:10different. But
- 2:02:10it's also just
- 2:02:11simple, simple
- 2:02:12things that we
- 2:02:12need to say,
- 2:02:13like, you know,
- 2:02:14you and I, if we
- 2:02:14had talked about
- 2:02:15this, just the
- 2:02:16two of us just
- 2:02:16being like, or
- 2:02:17other scientists
- 2:02:17around just been
- 2:02:18like, yeah, that
- 2:02:18was not what I
- 2:02:20would have done.
- 2:02:21You know, I would
- 2:02:21not have worn
- 2:02:22like a swim
- 2:02:23trunks that were
- 2:02:23sequence, like
- 2:02:24probably not the
- 2:02:25best idea. But to
- 2:02:26some people, like
- 2:02:27they want to know
- 2:02:28more about like
- 2:02:28why it's not a
- 2:02:29good like what,
- 2:02:30like what's the
- 2:02:30problem with
- 2:02:31that, you know,
- 2:02:32other than can't
- 2:02:33be very
- 2:02:33comfortable, to
- 2:02:34be honest, like a
- 2:02:34sequence bikini
- 2:02:35or any kind of
- 2:02:36being sweet that sequence.
- 2:02:36And so like, you
- 2:02:39just, you get
- 2:02:40that like you
- 2:02:40start and then
- 2:02:41all of a sudden
- 2:02:41people are like,
- 2:02:42Oh, that's simple
- 2:02:42information.
- 2:02:43Okay, I can
- 2:02:44digest that, you
- 2:02:45know, no jargon,
- 2:02:46no facts, it's
- 2:02:47just, hey, just
- 2:02:48probably not a
- 2:02:49better good idea,
- 2:02:50set it in a nice
- 2:02:51way. You know,
- 2:02:51you're very calm,
- 2:02:52you had your
- 2:02:53coffee with you.
- 2:02:54I think that was
- 2:02:54coffee, coffee
- 2:02:55mug with you.
- 2:02:56You're just like,
- 2:02:57Okay, I'm just gonna, I got a comment on this.
- 2:02:57Like it was, it
- 2:03:00was a really like
- 2:03:01simplistic,
- 2:03:02informative,
- 2:03:03entertaining kind
- 2:03:04of video that I
- 2:03:06think people just
- 2:03:06get, get behind,
- 2:03:08right? Sometimes
- 2:03:08I think we go for
- 2:03:09so complicated
- 2:03:10that this, the
- 2:03:11simple videos are
- 2:03:12necessary to
- 2:03:13really, I guess
- 2:03:15like, because he
- 2:03:15had a good story
- 2:03:16to tell too, but
- 2:03:17it's like, it
- 2:03:18just hits people,
- 2:03:19you know, that
- 2:03:19emotion. I just
- 2:03:20love, love that
- 2:03:21aspect of it.
- 2:03:22Right. You just,
- 2:03:23you just never
- 2:03:23know what's going
- 2:03:24to go, you know,
- 2:03:25especially in
- 2:03:25TikTok, you just,
- 2:03:26it can take off. He's a great person. He's a great person. He's a great person. He's a great person. You know, and I think that's what I want to say that I think like, you know, you're going to be very, very nice, very nice. I love it. It's a really, very, very nice. I think it's a great place to see people. You know, I think it's a very nice place to be, you know, you're going to
- 2:03:27within like
- 2:03:27minutes and
- 2:03:28you're just like,
- 2:03:28"What the heck
- 2:03:29happened?" It's
- 2:03:31awesome. But I
- 2:03:32love how
- 2:03:32you did that
- 2:03:33story and it was
- 2:03:34a number part and
- 2:03:36it was just, it
- 2:03:36got good views
- 2:03:37all the way
- 2:03:38through.
- 2:03:38And I just love
- 2:03:39that aspect. So
- 2:03:41as we kind of
- 2:03:42wrap up here, the
- 2:03:43science
- 2:03:43communication, I
- 2:03:44feel like
- 2:03:44it's never going
- 2:03:45to go away from
- 2:03:45you. Something
- 2:03:46that you've
- 2:03:47really done. What
- 2:03:48do you
- 2:03:48want to do?
- 2:03:50Like this is kind
- 2:03:51of the, you're
- 2:03:51just scratching
- 2:03:52the surface right
- 2:03:52now, I feel. Do
- 2:03:54you have any
- 2:03:54plans for science
- 2:03:55communication?
- 2:03:56Something that
- 2:03:56you want to be
- 2:03:57able to
- 2:03:57accomplish, try
- 2:03:59to manifest
- 2:03:59and put it out
- 2:04:00there for us. So
- 2:04:02a few things.
- 2:04:03One, looking at a
- 2:04:04PhD to kind of
- 2:04:05continue
- 2:04:05to, you know,
- 2:04:06to go more into
- 2:04:08science and I
- 2:04:08would love to go
- 2:04:09into academia to,
- 2:04:11again, to kind of
- 2:04:12continue that
- 2:04:13science
- 2:04:13communication,
- 2:04:14you know, in the
- 2:04:15college
- 2:04:15classroom. And I
- 2:04:17also would like
- 2:04:18to be able to
- 2:04:19film my journey
- 2:04:20and also like
- 2:04:21with this
- 2:04:22podcast, you
- 2:04:22know, with the
- 2:04:23other people
- 2:04:24you've
- 2:04:24interviewed,
- 2:04:25you know, you
- 2:04:25show their
- 2:04:25journey and
- 2:04:26everyone's are
- 2:04:27either different,
- 2:04:29but there's
- 2:04:29always so
- 2:04:29there's
- 2:04:29similarities and
- 2:04:30people might be
- 2:04:31able to connect
- 2:04:31and be like,
- 2:04:32"Wow, okay, you
- 2:04:33know, I didn't
- 2:04:33get a job right
- 2:04:34away and neither
- 2:04:35did she, but
- 2:04:35she's doing this.
- 2:04:36So, you know,
- 2:04:37it's
- 2:04:37possible for me."
- 2:04:38So there's that
- 2:04:39aspect. So
- 2:04:39definitely a PhD
- 2:04:40and being able to
- 2:04:42show the journey
- 2:04:43and show the
- 2:04:43research and
- 2:04:43again, just show
- 2:04:45research that
- 2:04:45most people might
- 2:04:46not ever get a
- 2:04:47chance to
- 2:04:47see or didn't
- 2:04:47even know existed
- 2:04:48and get people
- 2:04:49excited. But
- 2:04:51with, in the
- 2:04:53meantime, I mean,
- 2:04:54the PhD
- 2:04:54search is a
- 2:04:56daunting one.
- 2:04:57I've been working
- 2:04:57for hours on top
- 2:04:59of everything
- 2:04:59else. I was, you
- 2:05:00know, in
- 2:05:00between, I'm
- 2:05:01like looking at
- 2:05:02universities and,
- 2:05:03you know, looking
- 2:05:03at finding
- 2:05:03professors, but
- 2:05:04it's, it normally
- 2:05:05tells you how
- 2:05:06hard it is to
- 2:05:06really find
- 2:05:07someone that
- 2:05:08matches your
- 2:05:09research
- 2:05:10interests.
- 2:05:11Yeah. That
- 2:05:12also will give
- 2:05:13you a chance to
- 2:05:14broaden your
- 2:05:14skill set and get
- 2:05:16you a chance to,
- 2:05:17you know,
- 2:05:18work with
- 2:05:18something that
- 2:05:18you may have
- 2:05:18worked before or,
- 2:05:19you know,
- 2:05:20continue working
- 2:05:21with what you're
- 2:05:21working
- 2:05:21with. But,
- 2:05:22but, you know, I,
- 2:05:23with my, with my
- 2:05:24white sharks
- 2:05:25stuff, like I
- 2:05:25don't always have
- 2:05:26to do white
- 2:05:26sharks. I
- 2:05:27like the
- 2:05:27shark stuff, but
- 2:05:28I would like to,
- 2:05:28you know, expand
- 2:05:29on it, work
- 2:05:30another species
- 2:05:30or, you know, I
- 2:05:32like the tagging
- 2:05:32and
- 2:05:33telemetry stuff.
- 2:05:34So maybe continue
- 2:05:35that with
- 2:05:35something
- 2:05:35different and
- 2:05:36then just hone in
- 2:05:37the skill set,
- 2:05:38but use it for,
- 2:05:39you know,
- 2:05:39variety of
- 2:05:40animals and I can
- 2:05:41learn about
- 2:05:41different
- 2:05:41behaviors. So
- 2:05:42there's that. But
- 2:05:45in the meantime,
- 2:05:46I'm up for an
- 2:05:47election. So in
- 2:05:48the, in Florida,
- 2:05:50we have Florida
- 2:05:51Marine Science
- 2:05:52Educators
- 2:05:52Association. So
- 2:05:53it's an, it's an
- 2:05:54association for
- 2:05:55all the educators
- 2:05:56that teach marine
- 2:05:57science. I mean,
- 2:05:57things for all
- 2:05:58levels. I think
- 2:05:59primarily it's
- 2:05:59more like middle
- 2:06:00school and high
- 2:06:00school teachers
- 2:06:01in it. Yeah. But
- 2:06:02I'm up for the
- 2:06:03Northeast
- 2:06:03Regional Director
- 2:06:04position. And I
- 2:06:05feel like I have
- 2:06:05a pretty good
- 2:06:06chance because
- 2:06:06I'm the only
- 2:06:07person on the
- 2:06:08ballot for that.
- 2:06:09So I'm so far,
- 2:06:10nobody else, but
- 2:06:11we just get to
- 2:06:12go. So, I mean, I
- 2:06:13think there's no
- 2:06:13one else running
- 2:06:14up against me. So
- 2:06:14I think I have a
- 2:06:15pretty good
- 2:06:15chance. Yeah. But
- 2:06:17a friend of mine,
- 2:06:19Chelsea Shaw,
- 2:06:20she's the
- 2:06:20President-elect.
- 2:06:21So she's starting
- 2:06:21this, this coming
- 2:06:23year. She reached
- 2:06:25out to me. We
- 2:06:26both had worked
- 2:06:26together in the
- 2:06:27past. And she'd
- 2:06:28asked me if I
- 2:06:29wanted to be a
- 2:06:29part of this.
- 2:06:30And, you know,
- 2:06:30part of me was a
- 2:06:31little nervous
- 2:06:31being like, do I
- 2:06:32add something
- 2:06:32else to my plate?
- 2:06:33Yeah. But it's
- 2:06:35education. And
- 2:06:36I'm like, I can
- 2:06:37spin this
- 2:06:37into my TikTok.
- 2:06:38And I already do
- 2:06:39a lot of
- 2:06:39education
- 2:06:40outreach events
- 2:06:40personally,
- 2:06:42myself. So I was
- 2:06:43like, this will
- 2:06:43just be an
- 2:06:44extension of that
- 2:06:45and kind of give
- 2:06:45me more chances
- 2:06:47or, you know, be
- 2:06:49able to reach a
- 2:06:50bigger audience
- 2:06:51in the educator
- 2:06:52circle. And so
- 2:06:54they just
- 2:06:55basically, I will
- 2:06:55be helping
- 2:06:56facilitate events
- 2:06:57in the area,
- 2:06:58putting out
- 2:06:59newsletters about
- 2:06:59events that are
- 2:07:00retained in
- 2:07:01marine science or
- 2:07:01education in the
- 2:07:02area, you know,
- 2:07:03facilitating
- 2:07:04conferences or
- 2:07:06just group
- 2:07:07meetups to make
- 2:07:07sure that you
- 2:07:08know, anyone in
- 2:07:08the area. And
- 2:07:10then it also kind
- 2:07:12of helps me in a
- 2:07:12way to have more
- 2:07:13of a board and
- 2:07:14leadership role
- 2:07:15that can, again,
- 2:07:16get me new
- 2:07:17experiences in
- 2:07:18that. So that's
- 2:07:19kind of like my,
- 2:07:20my short term and
- 2:07:22long term goals
- 2:07:23and what's
- 2:07:24currently kind of
- 2:07:25going on to
- 2:07:25continue this. So
- 2:07:26even though I'm a
- 2:07:28researcher, the
- 2:07:29education part,
- 2:07:30obviously, is
- 2:07:30so important to
- 2:07:31me. So this
- 2:07:32educator
- 2:07:33association kind
- 2:07:34of gives me that
- 2:07:34chance to do it
- 2:07:36on a bigger and
- 2:07:38again, at a
- 2:07:39professional
- 2:07:39level, on top of
- 2:07:40just the fun
- 2:07:41TikToks. But I
- 2:07:42can also use my
- 2:07:43TikToks in this
- 2:07:45and promote both
- 2:07:46the association
- 2:07:47and just talk
- 2:07:49about everything.
- 2:07:50And I think
- 2:07:50everything is so
- 2:07:50linked together
- 2:07:51that I, I feel
- 2:07:53like this was a
- 2:07:54good move. And I
- 2:07:55hope that people
- 2:07:56can benefit from
- 2:07:57this. And I hope
- 2:07:58that I can bring
- 2:07:59something new to
- 2:07:59the table.
- 2:08:00And that they,
- 2:08:02you know, I can
- 2:08:02open the doors
- 2:08:04for some people
- 2:08:04or get people
- 2:08:05together that are
- 2:08:05like minded and
- 2:08:06making, you know,
- 2:08:07again, help the
- 2:08:08Northeast Florida
- 2:08:09portion, you
- 2:08:09know, of Florida
- 2:08:10to get just
- 2:08:11excited about
- 2:08:11marine science
- 2:08:12and get more
- 2:08:13people involved.
- 2:08:14I love it. I
- 2:08:15agree with you. I
- 2:08:16think it's
- 2:08:16working. I think
- 2:08:17you're doing it
- 2:08:17and you're
- 2:08:18getting bigger
- 2:08:19and bigger
- 2:08:19things. And I
- 2:08:20just love it. You
- 2:08:21know, this has
- 2:08:22been awesome to
- 2:08:23have you on the
- 2:08:24podcast. This is
- 2:08:25the first
- 2:08:25definitely not
- 2:08:26last time I'd
- 2:08:26like to have you
- 2:08:27on the podcast.
- 2:08:27I'd love to have
- 2:08:28you back.
- 2:08:28And as you do
- 2:08:29more research, as
- 2:08:30you do more
- 2:08:31science
- 2:08:31communication,
- 2:08:32whether that be
- 2:08:32through TikToks,
- 2:08:33whether it be
- 2:08:34through like a
- 2:08:34regional area and
- 2:08:35having influence
- 2:08:36on how people,
- 2:08:37how kids are
- 2:08:38being educated. I
- 2:08:39think it's
- 2:08:39wonderful to be
- 2:08:41part of all
- 2:08:42that aspect.
- 2:08:42Because I think
- 2:08:42as as scientists,
- 2:08:44we have this this
- 2:08:45responsibility,
- 2:08:45not only to do
- 2:08:46really good
- 2:08:47research and
- 2:08:47really good
- 2:08:48science and
- 2:08:48conservation, we
- 2:08:49also have that
- 2:08:50ability with part
- 2:08:51of the
- 2:08:51conservation is
- 2:08:51to really connect
- 2:08:52with people.
- 2:08:53And I think
- 2:08:53you're doing that
- 2:08:54in a fantastic
- 2:08:54way. It's
- 2:08:55obviously
- 2:08:56working, whether
- 2:08:57you're talking
- 2:08:57about sequenced
- 2:08:58bikinis or you're
- 2:08:59talking about
- 2:08:59evolutionary
- 2:09:00advantages that
- 2:09:02fish can have. I
- 2:09:03just love it. I
- 2:09:04want to thank you
- 2:09:05so much for
- 2:09:05coming on
- 2:09:06the show.
- 2:09:06And, you know, if
- 2:09:08people want to
- 2:09:08get a hold of
- 2:09:09you, your TikTok
- 2:09:10is at Ken dot
- 2:09:12C's. So Ken Z's,
- 2:09:13but Ken dot C's
- 2:09:15will put the link
- 2:09:16in the show
- 2:09:16notes. Is there
- 2:09:17any other way
- 2:09:17that you want
- 2:09:18people to get a
- 2:09:19hold of you or?
- 2:09:20In case TikTok
- 2:09:21gets banned for
- 2:09:22whatever reason,
- 2:09:23I'm currently in
- 2:09:24the United States
- 2:09:25and I know we're
- 2:09:25all the ones
- 2:09:26dealing with it.
- 2:09:27I'm on Blue Sky.
- 2:09:29And I think
- 2:09:31there's another
- 2:09:31it's called
- 2:09:32Skylight Social,
- 2:09:33the new one that
- 2:09:34just popped up.
- 2:09:35I just added it's
- 2:09:35linked to Blue
- 2:09:36Sky, so they're
- 2:09:37kind of
- 2:09:37connected. I will
- 2:09:39be also starting
- 2:09:40a educational
- 2:09:42like Instagram,
- 2:09:43same all the same
- 2:09:44handles.
- 2:09:45I can't can dot
- 2:09:46C's or Ken dot
- 2:09:47C's or Ken dash
- 2:09:48C's. So you can
- 2:09:50follow me on all
- 2:09:50the platforms on
- 2:09:51that way.
- 2:09:52I'll put all
- 2:09:52those links in
- 2:09:53the show notes
- 2:09:53and I want to
- 2:09:54thank you again,
- 2:09:55Kenzie, for
- 2:09:55coming on the
- 2:09:55podcast. It's
- 2:09:56been great. Thank
- 2:09:57you for having
- 2:09:57me. It was a
- 2:09:57great time.
- 2:09:58Thank you,
- 2:09:58Kenzie, for
- 2:09:59joining me on
- 2:09:59today's episode
- 2:10:00of the How to
- 2:10:00Protect the Ocean
- 2:10:01podcast and
- 2:10:02sharing your
- 2:10:02story with the
- 2:10:03audience. It was
- 2:10:04great to be able
- 2:10:05to hear how you
- 2:10:06started, where
- 2:10:07you're ending up
- 2:10:07now and where
- 2:10:08you're going to
- 2:10:08go in the future
- 2:10:09and your goals.
- 2:10:10And I think it's
- 2:10:11amazing. I can't
- 2:10:11wait to see what
- 2:10:12you come up with.
- 2:10:13I can't wait to
- 2:10:13have you back on
- 2:10:14the podcast to
- 2:10:15talk more about
- 2:10:16sharks, more
- 2:10:16about fisheries,
- 2:10:18more about marine
- 2:10:18biology and
- 2:10:19science
- 2:10:19communication.
- 2:10:20It's all stuff
- 2:10:21that we love to
- 2:10:22talk about here
- 2:10:23on the podcast. I
- 2:10:24think it's really
- 2:10:24interesting just
- 2:10:25from a personal
- 2:10:25standpoint, our
- 2:10:26paths have been
- 2:10:27very similar just
- 2:10:28at different
- 2:10:28times. I'm older
- 2:10:29than her, much
- 2:10:29older than her.
- 2:10:30And we've had
- 2:10:31very similar sort
- 2:10:33of experiences
- 2:10:34learning GIS and
- 2:10:35working right
- 2:10:36after university
- 2:10:36and going back
- 2:10:37and doing
- 2:10:38graduate school.
- 2:10:38So we have that
- 2:10:39experience and we
- 2:10:40have that field
- 2:10:41experience.
- 2:10:41They were able to
- 2:10:42do a master's
- 2:10:43where we're
- 2:10:44looking at more
- 2:10:45data intense
- 2:10:45masters and
- 2:10:46research compared
- 2:10:47to field intense
- 2:10:48masters and
- 2:10:49research. And so
- 2:10:50I think it's
- 2:10:50really cool that
- 2:10:51we have that
- 2:10:51similar path.
- 2:10:52Obviously,
- 2:10:53science
- 2:10:53communication
- 2:10:53path as well. We
- 2:10:54share. So it was
- 2:10:55really great to
- 2:10:56connect with her
- 2:10:56on that.
- 2:10:57And I just love
- 2:10:58to hear that type
- 2:10:59of story and to
- 2:11:00know that, you
- 2:11:00know what, not
- 2:11:01everybody has a
- 2:11:02unique path. I
- 2:11:03mean, this is
- 2:11:03unique in her own
- 2:11:04right. But it's
- 2:11:05very similar to a
- 2:11:05lot of us who are
- 2:11:06coming out and
- 2:11:07doing more
- 2:11:07science
- 2:11:07communication. I
- 2:11:08just love to see
- 2:11:09that and enjoying
- 2:11:10it. Not having
- 2:11:11like, you know,
- 2:11:12crazy goals of
- 2:11:13earning a ton of
- 2:11:14money becoming an
- 2:11:14influencer, just
- 2:11:15educating for one
- 2:11:16person so that
- 2:11:17they can
- 2:11:17understand the
- 2:11:18ocean a little
- 2:11:19bit better. And
- 2:11:20that's made her
- 2:11:20day. I just love
- 2:11:21that aspect. You
- 2:11:22know, just
- 2:11:22keeping it real,
- 2:11:24keeping it, you
- 2:11:24know, just right
- 2:11:25in front of you
- 2:11:25and just being
- 2:11:26like, I just want
- 2:11:26to talk about that.
- 2:11:27I'm going to do
- 2:11:28it anyway. I
- 2:11:29might as well do
- 2:11:29it on a platform
- 2:11:30where people can
- 2:11:31listen. And if
- 2:11:31they're looking
- 2:11:32for that type of
- 2:11:33resource, they've
- 2:11:34got it. So I'm
- 2:11:35going to put the
- 2:11:35links to Kenzie's
- 2:11:36TikTok to her new
- 2:11:37Instagram is
- 2:11:38coming out to
- 2:11:39blue sky in the
- 2:11:40show notes. Check
- 2:11:41it out. And I'd
- 2:11:42love to hear your
- 2:11:43comment on her
- 2:11:44career. You know,
- 2:11:45are you following
- 2:11:45a similar path?
- 2:11:46Do you want to
- 2:11:47follow a similar
- 2:11:47path? Hit me up
- 2:11:47on Instagram at
- 2:11:48how to protect
- 2:11:49the ocean. Or you
- 2:11:50can hit me up in
- 2:11:50the comments. If
- 2:11:51you're watching
- 2:11:51this on YouTube,
- 2:11:53and I would love
- 2:11:53to hear your
- 2:11:54thoughts about
- 2:11:54all of this. So
- 2:11:55thank you so
- 2:11:56much, Kenzie, for your time.
- 2:11:57Thank you so much for joining us.
- 2:11:57And thank you for
- 2:11:58joining us on
- 2:11:59today's episode
- 2:11:59of the How to
- 2:12:00Protect the Ocean
- 2:12:01podcast. I'm your
- 2:12:02host, Andrew
- 2:12:02Lewin from the
- 2:12:02True North Strong
- 2:12:03and Free. Have a
- 2:12:04great day. We'll
- 2:12:05talk to you next
- 2:12:05time and happy
- 2:12:06conservation.
