Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / This shows China has BLOOD on its HANDS, says retired US Navy commander
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Senator President Trump also responding to reports that China has
- 0:03Speaker 1: offered a deadly, has offered rather deadly support to Iran.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Wall Street Journal says satellite images from Beijing were
- 0:09Speaker 1: used in Tehran's attack on a U.S. base in Jordan
- 0:13Speaker 1: that killed three American troops. Let's bring in retired Navy
- 0:16Speaker 1: Commander Kirk Lippold. former commanding officer of the USS Cole. Kirk,
- 0:19Speaker 1: good to have you with us this afternoon. Here's what
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Wall Street Journal wrote about this in part. They said, quote,
- 0:26Speaker 1: before Iran carried out its attack that killed three U.S.
- 0:29Speaker 1: troops in July, Tehran acquired high-resolution satellite images of the
- 0:33Speaker 1: base in Jordan from Chinese entities, according to U.S. officials
- 0:37Speaker 1: familiar with the tales of the incident. It is the
- 0:39Speaker 1: clearest evidence so far that Chinese support for Iran during
- 0:42Speaker 1: the war has had lethal consequences for U.S. forces. If,
- 0:47Speaker 1: in fact, that is the case, that would seem to
- 0:49Speaker 1: be serious transgression on China's part.
- 0:54Speaker 2: John, it's more than a transgression. It shows that China
- 0:57Speaker 2: has now got blood on their hands when it comes
- 0:59Speaker 2: to them directly supporting the number one state sponsor of terrorism,
- 1:03Speaker 2: who has killed hundreds of Americans over the years. And
- 1:07Speaker 2: now they are targeting the Americans in Jordan and resulted
- 1:10Speaker 2: in three service member deaths. And we've seen over time
- 1:14Speaker 2: past failed presidents in dealing with Iran that allowed that
- 1:18Speaker 2: threat to metastasize to a point that we are dealing
- 1:20Speaker 2: with a country pursuing nuclear weapons. And here you have China...
- 1:25Speaker 2: part of the resistance, part of the axis of resistance,
- 1:28Speaker 2: working with Iran, targeting U.S. forces. And I think that
- 1:32Speaker 2: you're going to see them continue to do that until
- 1:35Speaker 2: the United States starts drawing a line. And hopefully President
- 1:38Speaker 2: Trump will do that come the 25 September meeting he
- 1:41Speaker 2: has with President Xi.
- 1:42Speaker 1: We shall see. But at the moment, at least in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the meantime, the president seems to be downplaying China's involvement.
- 1:48Speaker 1: This is what he said aboard Air Force One. You
- 1:51Speaker 1: recently reported that Chinese entities may have provided Iranians with
- 1:56Speaker 1: satellite imagery of the air bases in Jordan.
- 1:59Speaker 3: They do what we do. They basically do what we do.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I would say this. I think he's behaved reasonably well,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and we behave reasonably well. You know, when they say
- 2:11Speaker 3: that China spies on us, I say, you're right, and
- 2:14Speaker 3: we spy on them, too.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You know, I mean, obviously, we spy on China and
- 2:18Speaker 1: they spy on us. But providing targeting data to an
- 2:23Speaker 1: enemy of the United States would seem to be a
- 2:25Speaker 1: move that the president should be very concerned about.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Maybe he doesn't want to derail the summit that's coming
- 2:31Speaker 1: up at the end of the month.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He may not want to derail it, but the bottom
- 2:36Speaker 2: line is, John, I lived through the consequences of two presidents,
- 2:40Speaker 2: Clinton and Bush, who downplayed the threat of al-Qaeda after
- 2:44Speaker 2: killing 17 of my sailors on USS Cole. And what
- 2:47Speaker 2: was the result? We saw it last week with the
- 2:49Speaker 2: 25th anniversary of the attacks of 9-11. Downplaying China's involvement
- 2:54Speaker 2: in what they are doing for the sake of political
- 2:56Speaker 2: expediency is the wrong signal to be sending. Because when
- 3:00Speaker 2: you look, China is paying attention to how the United
- 3:03Speaker 2: States is dealing with the Strait of Hormuz. the Strait
- 3:07Speaker 2: of Bab al-Mandeb at the southern end of the Red Sea,
- 3:10Speaker 2: what the other allies in the region are doing, because
- 3:13Speaker 2: they look at the militarization of islands throughout the South
- 3:15Speaker 2: China Sea, and that is a signal that we don't
- 3:18Speaker 2: want to be sending. We need to draw the line
- 3:20Speaker 2: with China and tell them, do not engage in this,
- 3:23Speaker 2: do not be involved with this, and you need to
- 3:25Speaker 2: decouple yourself from Iran, because the consequences over time, the
- 3:29Speaker 2: United States is not going to allow this to continue
- 3:32Speaker 2: to grow where China can threaten the world.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if this has anything to do
- 3:37Speaker 1: with it, but apparently 10 days ago, a Chinese reconnaissance
- 3:40Speaker 1: satellite simply disintegrated in space. But, I mean, to your point,
- 3:46Speaker 1: when the president gets together with Xi at the end
- 3:48Speaker 1: of this month, he's got to have some difficult conversations
- 3:50Speaker 1: with him behind closed doors.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Absolutely. I think he needs to address the issue that's
- 3:55Speaker 2: fairly accurate, both in the news— And through sources that
- 3:59Speaker 2: I've heard, those 400 man-portable anti-aircraft missiles that China has
- 4:04Speaker 2: supposedly given Iran to protect some of their facilities, like
- 4:08Speaker 2: Pickaxe Mountain and others, you have to look at the
- 4:10Speaker 2: fact that they're providing this level of targeting data. You
- 4:13Speaker 2: need to remember that virtually every Iranian drone that flies
- 4:17Speaker 2: today flies with a Chinese-made engine. So at the end
- 4:20Speaker 2: of the day, when you look at what Russia and
- 4:22Speaker 2: especially China are providing to Iran, it is bogging us
- 4:26Speaker 2: down into the Middle East. And the United States needs
- 4:29Speaker 2: to have some of our allies in the Middle East
- 4:31Speaker 2: step up. The Saudis clearly aren't doing anything when it
- 4:34Speaker 2: comes to taking on the Houthi rebels and doing what
- 4:37Speaker 2: they need. Saudi Arabia needs to bleed for their own
- 4:40Speaker 2: national security interests. And they need to back up the
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yemeni forces and take it on. Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 1: You know, just on the subject of those man pads,
- 4:47Speaker 1: we saw how effective they could be. They took down
- 4:50Speaker 1: that F-15 back in the spring and saw that 60
- 4:53Speaker 1: Minutes piece last night with the WIZO.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Bravo. Wow.
- 4:57Speaker 1: What a moving story he has to tell. Kirk, always
- 5:00Speaker 1: good to catch up with you. Thanks so much. Really
- 5:01Speaker 1: appreciate it.
