So it's September and I know half of the year is gone, but it's not too late for you to make some change in some improvements. So I have an author tonight who it's gonna help us do that. Okay. So the name of his book is don't gamble on life improvements until you shift the arts. So keyword you. So we're gonna be talking tonight to author Kevin Eastman. Come on up, sir. Welcome, welcome, welcome, Thank you very much, thanks for having me. Oh, thank you for having us. So I always start off, you have to tell us a little bit about yourself. Okay, Well I'm I'm actually originally from California. I'm in southern California now. After serving over twenty years in the Air Force, I decided enough was enough, that I had enough. I got my self set up for pension for the rest of my life. So here I am retired, enjoying life and writing books and living life and enjoying time as a husband, a father, and a grandfather. Actually, oh wow, Well, first of all, thank you for your service, and also thank your family for their service. Because a lot of people think when it comes down to the military. That is only the person is serving, but it's also the family tell them, we say thank them, and the little person thank thank you, h as many a while I thank you so military to writing, that's a big difference. What made you go that route? Well, I actually my book came about by accident, so to speak at What I was doing was I was reevaluating life because it wasn't going the way that I wanted it to go. So I had to. I started writing a series of personal essays you know, that I can re reflect on. And then I started reading them as a reader and not a writer, and then it dawned on me that I can. I'm not the only one that could benefit from what I wrote, so I decided to publish them. You know what, I love the fact that you said as a reader and a writer. I am a sole believer that a reader can be a writer and a writer can be a reader. Yes, I just said that, and I just realized up if my own fitting out and you'd like to see shake your head at me now. So it's finally nice to meet someone who actually also agrees in that. So tell us about your book. Well, my book is it's it. As you said, the title is Don't Gamble on Life. What it is is I take the reader through a series of topics that I think contribute most to the chaos that we encounter in life, and I give them a systemic way of putting everything together to kind of make it easier to understand the things that we have. For example, I talk about relationships, I talk about haters, I talk about perception, the comfort zone, a lot of things that we that we encounter, and I try to get people to understand that a lot of the stress that we actually encounter we have a part in creating. And I do it in a very very intentional way to take a person from A to Z, so to speak. So we're talking from A to Z. What would a be A is actually finding out where you are now. You know what I do is I tell people established the foundation and build from there. You know. So what I do is I introduce myself in the first chapter as a person that has gone through adversity and overcome that adversity. So what I do is I have a lot of realism in my book. I can tell you and anybody that listens to me, if you read my book, ninety five percent of what you read I've personally gone through. So it's it's not one of those Oh, he went to school and he learned the theory and all of that. No, this is based on experience, logic, humor, and observation mostly. Now, see, that's the type of book that I like. I like people who actually speak about the experience. Why. Because I think that brings out the real this of the book and the hunger to get that knowledge out. Sure, I love that. I love that. And that's exactly how I wrote it. I wrote it. I didn't want it. When I wrote it. I wrote it in a way that I didn't want the reader to think they were reading a book. I wanted them to feel like they were having a conversation with somebody. Obviously it's a one sided conversation because I'm not there reading a book to you. But you will get a you will go inside of Okay, how a person that is going through this is thinking. I like to tell people my book may not help you, but it'll help you help somebody. You know, I guarantee it. Now you two season, you two season. So I'm a I'm a fast forward what author, and I don't even think I gave you this question. So this's gonna be one of those pop up questions. What author gave you this knowledge? Or what book did you read gave you this insight? For the reader, believe it or not, it was not a book. What it was it was it was my life I had to have. I had I was. It was not going the way that I wanted. And I had a wonderful supervisor when I was in the Air Force, and he sat me down and he asked me two questions. One he asked me said why do you insist on short changing yourself? And I was stuck because I didn't think I was short changing myself. And then he said, well, I hear you blaming any and everybody for your misfortune. Have you ever looked in the mirror? And I had no answer for that. Wow, okay. And what he did was he accomplished two things. He won, he pissed me off, but two he got my attention and it made me for It forced me to reevaluate the way I was thinking. And once I started doing that, it made it easy for me to go, Okay, a lot of this stuff that I'm going through, I actually put in my way I put that obstacle there, so something I did could have changed the outcome. So I started doing that, and once I started looking from within instead of instead of the surrounding area first, it made things a lot easier for me to understand it. I can't, I can't, I can't. Okay, oh wow, So let me let me tell you why you've been having technical difficulties. This is crazy, this is this is some God divine intervention right here. I've been working at a public library for eighteen years. I have the highest that you can get without a degree, and I was approach and I do way more and it's proven fact than a person who has a degree. And I was this close to saying I'm about to go get another job because they're saying working out for something. Kept on telling me, no, you're here for a reason, and my latent mentor God bless her, Cynthia Graham heard said everything that you just said out of your mind when me and her had that conversation, different words, but every single thing. So you have now renewed me. Thank you girl, You have just renewed me. Thank you God. Because I literally had my other screen up looking at other jobs, and I said I was tired of doing all this work and wondering where I was gonna go, and you just but hey, I guess I have that's a good thing. You just did that. Oh my god. Okay, okay, okay, let's go Backtreies was crazy. So if you can hirelight any part of your book two jump start someone to read your book or to gain a new reader, what part would that be, Well, actually, it would probably be the first the first chapter. And the reason I say that is because I introduce myself as a regular person, and that's what I want the reader to see. I don't want a reader to see a person that's gone through school and learned a bunch of theories and read a lot of books and all of that stuff, because that person may not know what the reader is going through. If I figured, if I introduce myself as a person that has gone through things that they may have gone through, I have a little bit more credibility. And one of the things I tell people in the first the first chapter is a lot of this stuff you are going to read in this book are going to make you mad and it and that's okay because mad people actually take action. You know, if you're uncomfortable, You're going to take action to become comfortable. So I let people know that the book is is not if you're looking for a bunch of Harvard level words and you know, being in the Harvard lecture hall and all of that, this is not the book for you. It is plain, simple, point and in plain English, so anybody can understand it. Because I figured the best information is useless if the person on the other end can't understand it. So I wrote it very simply. It's like you know, and it makes people think. And I start off with the first chapter letting people know what to expect in the book and how to apply to things that are in the book. That makes so much sense. It needs to be in plain English for that person's action. Rey, That's what I'm talking about. That's exactly what I am talking about. So hey everyone, we're coming back. We're gonna take a little commercial break. We're gonna get to little more about mister Eastman. We're gonna find out more about this book goes here, Yes on the South Carolina book. Yeah, ill to read. Listen, God listens getting longer and longer as we speak. You guys, come on back after this commercial Okay, turn off the lights go again. None on none. Imagine, let's take a shower, shower together, I wash your fucking wash mind so my boils day. Same choice. Turn off the girl, I wanna give you a special treat. You're so sweet. Turn on. I'm sorry, y'all. Every time I hear a Black Diamonds commercial, I sit in the background and I'm dancing that Teddy Peza series. Okay, so we are back when Lisz eas men. I know you're thinking this girl listen, sit up a dancing Oh no, I was. I was grooving myself. Don't worry about it. So what was your favorite part about your part of your book? Well, like we were talking before the commercial break, it's the first chapter was one of the most important things. And I I've titled the book and I've titled the chapters in the book, and the first chapter is titled why should I even listen to this guy? You know? And the reason why I put that in there and I titled it that way is to define the why. A lot of people, uh, in my experience, are content with reacting to the what, and then they ignore the why. But what I tell people is, if you define your why, you might find out that what is something that you actually occurred, what actually cause to occur. So what I tell people is the what is the easy target. You can't deny that it happened, you know, But if you define the why, A lot of people ignore the why because finding out the why it means facing the possibility there's something you did actually cause the what to occur, and that's kind of hard for a lot of people to accept. So if they stay away from the why and just concentrate on reacting to the what, because if you have the what sitting there, anything that you do to take care of the what can be easily justified. I think your book just moved up into two basiness because you just dropped all kind and g It seems like your books take you out of that comfort. It shakes you up and then be like, Okay, find your comfort level again. Well you have to get it. You have to be uncomfortable. You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, you know, you have to. You know, if you think about it this way, comfort does not it doesn't encourage action. It encourages inaction because if you lay in the bed, what do you do if you flip around till you find a comfortable position. Then once you find that position, you stop and you fall asleep. You know what, Let's go to the next question. See you just dropping right a minute? You didn't. You didn't. You didn't let me finish the other part you said it was my favorite part. I really don't have a favorite chapter in my book. I really don't. But the chapter that I've a lot of people give me feedback on is obviously a chapter on relationships. Is the longest chapter in the book. Everybody wants to skip to that chapter. It's chapter number seven. But a lot of people I always tell them, and I tell them in the front, in the front of the book, read it from front to back first, don't skip around because you might miss something because I reference a lot of things in earlier chapters in that chapter. So so it's it's it's one of those it's a step by step process basically what it is. It's each chapter is designed to be a building block on the last one, so it takes you in as it's a it's a it's a path pretty much so. I but I think the one that I had the most fun with because I get the most spirited conversations is on the chapter and relationships. So you know, after we read your book, you gotta come back so we can have all those conversations. Because no, absolutely, Right now, it's like it's like, wow, you know a lot of a lot of things that have been said, and the type of day that you had trees. He is giving you these confirmations and it's coming from places that you did not think you would find it at. So the second after the show, I like to have fun with the author. Okay, so we aren't talked about the book. Okay. So I know a lot of authors use music, some use food. I spoke to an author that uses TV. So what do you do while you're writing? I do you know? I have the TV playing in the background, a real low you know. I have music that gets in the mood. I like smooth jazz pretty much. That puts me, you know, in the writing mode, so to speak. But for me, it's I'm I'm usually late at night. It's when I write, oh wow, and that that's what I do. You know that the house is quiet and I can get things out and then I go back and edit it later. Oh so you edit your own work? Well, you have to you have to and then but I actually I do have an editor that I used. I edited it so much it actually to The book actually took me almost two years to write because I wanted it to say it say things a certain way, and I had to make sure it was coming out that I wanted it to. I had test readers to read certain chapters and other readers to read other chapters and things of that nature before I actually sent it to my editor. And I was nervous about it because I never you know, I didn't want to. You know, your your look is your baby. You know. It's hard to hand your baby off to somebody you've never met before, you know. But my editor was very, very knowledgeable and what she did, and she guided me through it. She said, don't worry, we'll get we'll get you a polished product. It seems like you had a good one, because I've heard some some edited horror stories. Oh lord, I've heard seth. Well. I was lucky because my editor was was recommended to me by my fraternity brother. So fraternity go ahead and shot them out because you can't see fraternity with shout out to my brother's in Alpha Pi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. All right, Alpha pi alpha, There you go, you shot out, there you go. So one of the questions I did asks if you could choose one season, what would it be and what? You know? I actually it's a toss up. Really. I like uh, I like spring because it's not too hot, not too cold, but I I enjoy the warm weather. I'm in southern California. I'm in the desert pretty much away from about an hour away from Palm Spring, so I get, you know, little rain and warm weather all the time. You know. I laugh when I'm when I'm barbecuing, like in December, so I can post it on Facebook because I hear all my friends that I've worked with when I was in Chicago, they're all bundled up and everything. But I'm sitting here barbecue in shorts, you know, in southern California in January. So wow, okay, I can't. I'm to South Carolina. So yeah, we our weather's been bipolar lately. One minute is hot, next minute it's cold. One minute it's a monsoon. Next when the sun coming out, we do we just don't even know what to do here. So we're down until our last couple of minutes well, what would you like to say to your readers? Where can I get your books? Just close this out? What would you like to say? I? Actually, I'm appreciative of every reader that I have and those that I have yet to meet, and you know it personally or in personally through my book or actually through interaction in the social media, and that those types of things. For me, I like hearing from readers. You know, for me, it's it's it's satisfying when I get a message from a reader saying something that I wrote actually help them make positive changes in their life. So I encourage anybody to read my book because it may not help you, but it will help somebody, you know, because we all know somebody that needs something that's written in this book. I can tell you that, oh wow. But where you can get it is through through all of the major online platforms. You can find me on social media on Facebook, on Twitter X or whatever they want to call it. Now, Uh, we'll say not charging for like, well, once they do that, they're gonna lose a lot of people. But that's not that's not my concern. But I'm on Facebook. I do have a website, Kevin E. Eastman dot com and I always put my middle initie in there because the creator of the teenage mutant Ninja Turtles is also named Kevin Eastman, and that's not me, so so I have to put that in there. And and I'm on So I'm on Facebook, author Kevin E. Eastman. You can find me there. Uh, drop me a line if you have read the book, if you want to read it, want to discuss it. I'm more than willing to talk to people about it because a lot of people didn't know what I was trying to say in my first edition, so I had to release a second edition of the book to kind of clarify those things. Okay, well, you guys, we have a blog interview for Mr Kevin Eastman. All the social media it handles, everything is in there. Head over the www dot sc book Gal and Friends dot com and in the search box putting Kevin Eastman, and you will have it all. And that explains because when I went on Amazon trying to find your book, I put Kevin Eastman and all in Ninta Turtle. I was thinking, I'm not crazy, and I was trying to do it while I was at work, and I was like, I don't want to go to my blog and I just want to I had look, I said, ninta turtle, hold up saying right to see. But I actually had to turn around and go to my email and said, oh, yeah, that's it. That's the book. Put the dice on it. That's the book. Yes, you guys, I love it cover. It's very very unique. This is the first time I ever saw dice on the cover and it made plenty of sense. Well, if you if you look at if you look at the cover, and there is a blog blog entry on my website that explains the all of the imagery if you see on the cover and the dice are one of the things that people are confused about because they think the book's about gambling, and it's it's actually not.
