- 0:26Speaker 1: Saints were back out on the practice field and it
- 0:29Speaker 1: was a former LSU Tiger who continues to turn heads
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the show stopper the camp darling so far is
- 0:38Speaker 1: has been continues to be former LSU wide receiver Barryon Brown,
- 0:45Speaker 1: who Kellen Moore, after practice day seven here on Thursday,
- 0:51Speaker 1: talked about Brown his continuous ability to make these plays
- 0:54Speaker 1: down the field.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think just ball tracking, you know, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: attack the football. I think he does a really good
- 1:00Speaker 2: job of that. And then yeah, obviously he's able to
- 1:03Speaker 2: utilize this speed that he has, and I think that's
- 1:05Speaker 2: obviously an asset to his man.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Kellen Moore is a very understated person. Got a call
- 1:13Speaker 1: earlier today from Ross Jackson was asking a question about
- 1:16Speaker 1: the site of Louisiana Sports and it's just about phrasing something,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and he was just gushing about Baryon Brown. And I
- 1:26Speaker 1: think the reason primarily why this is standing out so
- 1:31Speaker 1: much is because of the investment the Saints have made
- 1:35Speaker 1: at the receiver position. I mean, we know they paid
- 1:38Speaker 1: Chris Alave thirty three million dollars, Jordan Tyson was the
- 1:41Speaker 1: ninth overall pick, and we're not talking about those guys
- 1:46Speaker 1: throughout the first seven training camp practices. We were talking
- 1:49Speaker 1: about Barryon Brown, a sixth round pick who was the
- 1:53Speaker 1: third of three receivers taken in this most recent draft
- 1:56Speaker 1: by the Saints. And there was one thing that was
- 2:00Speaker 1: a certainty when the Saints picked Brown, and that was
- 2:04Speaker 1: he was gonna have a giant role on special teams.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Remember last year, in twenty twenty five, New Orleans was
- 2:12Speaker 1: twenty second in the NFL in kickoff return and punt
- 2:17Speaker 1: return average. There were twenty second in kickoff return and
- 2:20Speaker 1: twenty second in punt return average. They were at the
- 2:22Speaker 1: bottom of the league. And it makes sense, right, I mean,
- 2:25Speaker 1: they traded Rashid Shihed and after that you had a
- 2:28Speaker 1: hodgepodge of various receivers and running backs who were taken
- 2:32Speaker 1: over those duties. They were very bad in the return
- 2:34Speaker 1: game of season ago, in large part again because of
- 2:37Speaker 1: the Shiheed trade at the trade deadline and Barry and Brown.
- 2:40Speaker 1: During his college career three years at Kentucky, one year
- 2:43Speaker 1: at LSU, set an SEC record with six career kickoff
- 2:47Speaker 1: returns for touchdowns. He was one shy by the way
- 2:50Speaker 1: of tying the college football record which is seven. Math
- 2:55Speaker 1: so dude over four years was an explosive, dynamic kick
- 2:59Speaker 1: and punt returner. He did that at LSU a year ago,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and that was Look as a sixth round pick, you're
- 3:06Speaker 1: looking at a guy who was a productive receiver and
- 3:09Speaker 1: an overly productive receiver, was a productive receiver in the
- 3:13Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference, but at dynamic returnability. And that's a guy
- 3:18Speaker 1: that you look and go, Okay, well, he's probably the
- 3:21Speaker 1: number five or six receiver on the team, but he
- 3:25Speaker 1: makes the team because of his ability to help in
- 3:26Speaker 1: special teams. It gives you a receiver debth like that
- 3:28Speaker 1: was the idea. It was gonna make the team absolutely
- 3:31Speaker 1: as a return specialist. I think that would go without
- 3:34Speaker 1: saying the question was could he actually develop into a
- 3:39Speaker 1: receiver instead of just a return specialist. And that's something
- 3:43Speaker 1: that Brown talked about after practice today, is establishing himself
- 3:47Speaker 1: on offense.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Gotta keep going, man, I hate that I keep saying,
- 3:51Speaker 3: but it's the honesty guy too. Just keep going, like,
- 3:55Speaker 3: never get too high and never get to a lot.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I can't go home and be too haavy and all this,
- 4:00Speaker 3: or can't go home and be too long myself. So
- 4:02Speaker 3: just always looking to get better, whether it's good players
- 4:04Speaker 3: are bad plays, the best plays. Me and coach are
- 4:06Speaker 3: still in there. He coaching me up. Oh okay, you
- 4:08Speaker 3: can do this better. You can do this better. And
- 4:09Speaker 3: on a bad place, he's still coaching me up. So
- 4:12Speaker 3: this is always looking to get better.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Brown was last year in fall camp. If I went
- 4:20Speaker 1: back and thumbed through my notes every day, it seemed
- 4:25Speaker 1: aryan Brown hit a big play. I remember I was
- 4:29Speaker 1: doing it the day LSU played Clemson in the opener
- 4:32Speaker 1: last year. I did an interview on one of these
- 4:35Speaker 1: sports betting shows. It was the day of the game.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It was a Saturday, it was the day of the game,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and they one of the network I forg v sent
- 4:41Speaker 1: it was one of the networks, I forget, one of
- 4:42Speaker 1: the sports betting networks that produces content. They wanted me
- 4:45Speaker 1: to help preview the game, not from a sports betting standpod,
- 4:47Speaker 1: with just previewing the game, and I did give them
- 4:52Speaker 1: a prop bet. I was like, look, you want prop
- 4:54Speaker 1: better to take the under because I thought the under
- 4:56Speaker 1: would hit, And well that wasn't a prop, it was
- 4:58Speaker 1: total but to take the under. In the game, everyone
- 5:00Speaker 1: was betting the over, and that just screamed a defensive game.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And ultimately it was I said, and bet Barryon Brown
- 5:07Speaker 1: and trade as green anytime touchdown if you can find
- 5:09Speaker 1: it well, trade has scored as you remember, and Barryon
- 5:13Speaker 1: got robbed. He had a touchdown taken off the board
- 5:15Speaker 1: by a controversial review. But the point was, like we
- 5:20Speaker 1: saw that every day in camp. Nush trusted him, They
- 5:24Speaker 1: took shots with him, and he delivered over and over again.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The odd thing about Barryon Brown is the numbers never
- 5:33Speaker 1: really supported that. In his college career, over four college seasons,
- 5:38Speaker 1: he had a total of twenty and sixty receiving yards.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I heard Hunt say this. He wrote it at Louisiana
- 5:43Speaker 1: Sports dot Net earlier in the week, Barryon Brown, in
- 5:46Speaker 1: three years at Kentucky had fewer receiving yards combined in
- 5:51Speaker 1: the three years than Malik Neighbors had in twenty twenty three.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Neighbors had more receiving yards in one year than Brown
- 5:57Speaker 1: had three years at Kentucky. Well, why is that? Well,
- 5:59Speaker 1: his quarterbacks were Will Levis, Devin Leary, and then the
- 6:02Speaker 1: combination of Brock vander Griff and Cutter Bowling. That'll do it.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So the thought was a year ago, barry On Brown
- 6:10Speaker 1: comes to LSU, nuss Meyer was a four thousand yard passer,
- 6:13Speaker 1: plug and play. This explosive receiver is going to have
- 6:15Speaker 1: this monster year. And then we know what happened with
- 6:18Speaker 1: the LSU passing game. Nuss had the cyst on his back,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it limited him and the passing game never got going.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Last year for LSU, Nuss and then Michael Van Buren
- 6:27Speaker 1: wasn't very good either. So Brown was sort of plagued
- 6:31Speaker 1: during his college career despite his great ability by drops,
- 6:36Speaker 1: which were a thing for Brown throughout his career, but
- 6:39Speaker 1: also very poor quarterback playing bad offenses, and as a result,
- 6:43Speaker 1: he ended up being a six round pick and a
- 6:45Speaker 1: guy never really popped statistically, but now you're seeing it
- 6:49Speaker 1: in a receiver friendly offense where he has opportunity after
- 6:55Speaker 1: the first two guys with a quarterback who's established and
- 6:59Speaker 1: settled to get in there and spread his wings, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: so you're seeing it. I mean, we know a Lave
- 7:06Speaker 1: is there after signing the thirty three million dollar extension,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and Jordan Tyson's going to be featured as well because
- 7:12Speaker 1: you use the ninth pick and the draft on him.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But we asked the question after Jalen Polk retired, who
- 7:18Speaker 1: benefits the most because everybody has the opportunity now sorted
- 7:22Speaker 1: to move up a chair, and the early answer is
- 7:25Speaker 1: barry On Brown. We could say Devon Vlay, but remember
- 7:30Speaker 1: Devon Vley was atrocious for two thirds of the season,
- 7:32Speaker 1: that the portion of which he played in the last
- 7:35Speaker 1: few games before he got injured. He started to become
- 7:37Speaker 1: a more productive player. But he has to prove he
- 7:39Speaker 1: can do it over seventeen weeks. He is not. Bryce
- 7:42Speaker 1: Lance is in the same boat as barry On Brown.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Now he was drafted higher than Brown, but both the
- 7:50Speaker 1: rookies coming in Brown played four years of major college football.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Lance is coming in from North Dakota, state different levels entirely,
- 7:57Speaker 1: So maybe you're talking about a clearer path to Brown,
- 8:00Speaker 1: for Brown possibly to even be the number three. I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: not trying to get ahead of myself. I'm just saying
- 8:05Speaker 1: it is very clear that so far, through seven practices,
- 8:09Speaker 1: every day Barrion Brown is making plays. He's talking about it,
- 8:13Speaker 1: the coaches are talking about it, teammates are talking about it.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Media's writing and talking about it. Now he's got to
- 8:19Speaker 1: go do it preseason games first as a week from
- 8:21Speaker 1: Saturday against Jacksonville, and then all lot have to carry
- 8:23Speaker 1: it into the regular season. So you continue this ramp
- 8:25Speaker 1: up of intensity and expectation and all that sort of
- 8:28Speaker 1: stuff and the opportunity to liver. But so far Barry
- 8:33Speaker 1: and Brown has earned those opportunities to be that first
- 8:36Speaker 1: guy after a Lave and Jordan Tyson. It's gonna be
- 8:40Speaker 1: fascinating to watch. Baron Brown is gonna be the returns back.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He's gonna make this team as a return special. It's
- 8:44Speaker 1: like that's almost that's almost a certainty. He's healthy, he's
- 8:46Speaker 1: that guy. He's making the team. But canny factor in
- 8:50Speaker 1: to the offense as well. He's fighting for elbow room
- 8:54Speaker 1: at the table and winning a lot. Right now, it's
- 8:56Speaker 1: gonna be an interesting to watch. I want to watch
- 8:58Speaker 1: as training camp rolls along for the New World and
- 9:00Speaker 1: Saints
