- 0:02What shall we say then? That the Gentiles which followed
- 0:05not after righteousness have attained to righteousness, even
- 0:08the righteousness which is of faith?
- 0:12Hey listeners, this is Nick from Scripture Central and today's
- 0:15podcast addresses the question. How did Paul understand faith?
- 0:26Faith is an essential element of righteous living, often
- 0:29emphasized in Paul's writings. The importance of faith in Jesus
- 0:33Christ has also been discussed repeatedly by modern prophets,
- 0:36including Joseph Smith, who declared it to be one of the
- 0:40basic first principles of the gospel.
- 0:43Without faith, we would not be able to fully access the saving
- 0:46grace of Jesus Christ or reap all the rewards of eternal life
- 0:50that he offers us. True to form, Paul's ancient
- 0:54discussions of faith have richer, deeper meanings than can
- 0:57be readily translated into English.
- 1:00The word faith, as it appears in the King James Version of the
- 1:03New Testament is a translation of the Greek word pistus, which
- 1:08is best understood in terms of the ancient world's patron
- 1:10client relationship. As is Grace, Brent J Schmidt has
- 1:15observed that through the Greco Roman world, Pistus meant
- 1:19knowing and understanding one's patron and developing a
- 1:22relationship based on fidelity to that patron that ideally
- 1:26resulted in a lifetime relationship.
- 1:29As such, many instances of pistols in the New Testament can
- 1:33be translated more accurately as loyalty or faithfulness, better
- 1:39reflecting this relational understanding.
- 1:41This view was also reflected in many Greco Roman attitudes
- 1:45towards humans, relations with their gods, seeing the gods as
- 1:48patrons who would forge relationships with mortals,
- 1:52often for their betterment. For Paul and other New Testament
- 1:56apostles and authors, faith likewise pertain to our
- 1:59relationship with Heavenly Father, the only true God.
- 2:04According to Schmidt, the disciple client understands that
- 2:07God is the patron, shows faithfulness towards him, and
- 2:12develops a relationship with Him.
- 2:14This relationship is mutually beneficial as God desires a
- 2:17closer relationship with us and is continually faithful
- 2:20regarding His promises, and as we are faithful and loyal to
- 2:24Him. This relationship is formed as
- 2:27we make bilateral covenants with God which are ultimately for our
- 2:30benefit. As God is faithful by whom ye
- 2:34were called unto the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our
- 2:37Lord. Just as God is faithful to His
- 2:40covenantal agreements, He expects all who come to him to
- 2:44share that faithfulness toward Him, accepting no divided
- 2:48loyalties. Disciples should be faithful
- 2:51only to God the Father and not to anyone else.
- 2:55This command to be faithful to God only was expressed in no
- 2:58uncertain terms by Paul as well as by Jesus himself.
- 3:03No man can serve 2 masters, for either he will hate the one and
- 3:07love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the
- 3:11other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.
- 3:15All the cares of the world, including money and riches, are
- 3:18not to come between us and the Lord if we expect to properly
- 3:22maintain a faithful relationship with Him and receive the
- 3:25blessings that He has promised us.
- 3:28Because loyalty is demanded for proper discipleship, faith can
- 3:32never be reduced to just passive belief in the Lord.
- 3:35It requires constant action to demonstrate our loyalty to and
- 3:40friendship with God. Thus Paul told the Philippians
- 3:44that they must stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving
- 3:48together for the faith of the Gospel.
- 3:51Paul similarly taught in Romans Chapter 9, verse 30, that the
- 3:54Gentiles which followed not after righteousness in times
- 3:58past had now attained to righteousness, even the
- 4:01righteousness which is of faith or faithfulness to their
- 4:04covenants made initially at baptism.
- 4:07This loyalty is discussed and demonstrated in depth in Hebrews
- 4:11Chapter 11. After declaring that faith is
- 4:14the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
- 4:17seen, the author of Hebrews lists multiple individuals who
- 4:21had demonstrated their loyalty to the Lord through their making
- 4:24and keeping covenants with the Lord.
- 4:27Included in this list are righteous individuals such as
- 4:30Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses,
- 4:39as well as countless others who esteemed the reproach of Christ
- 4:42greater than any earthly reward. Because of this loyalty, they
- 4:46could be sure that the Lord would deliver them into a better
- 4:50country, that is a heavenly. Wherefore God is not ashamed to
- 4:54be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city.
- 4:59For Paul, faith in Christ was more than passive belief.
- 5:02It reflected a deep commitment that was focused on action,
- 5:06according to Schmidt. According to Schmidt, obedience
- 5:09was the proper response to the relational pistis that
- 5:12characterized Christ centered patron client relationships, as
- 5:16explained in Paul's epistle to the Romans.
- 5:19Although later theologians would declare faith to be an abstract,
- 5:22passive, or mystical belief that required no action on our part,
- 5:27the relational understanding of faith would be restored through
- 5:30Joseph Smith in the Book of Mormon and other inspired
- 5:33teachings and revelations given through latter day prophets.
- 5:37Similar to Hebrews Chapter 11, Moroni teaches in the Book of
- 5:39Mormon that whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a
- 5:44better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God.
- 5:48Which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of
- 5:53men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding
- 5:57and good works being led to glorify God.
- 6:01Covenantal loyalty and faithfulness allowed righteous
- 6:03individuals in the Book of Mormon to meet with the
- 6:06resurrected Savior, break free of bonds, baptize with fire and
- 6:11the Holy Ghost, and ascend into the presence of God.
- 6:15Faith is the principle of action and of power that must be
- 6:18exercised in all we do. In the end, we are told that
- 6:22salvation is the effect of faith and that without faith it is
- 6:26impossible to please God. At the same time, God has
- 6:29declared that this is my work and my glory to bring to pass
- 6:34the immortality and eternal life of man.
- 6:37Thus, as we continue to exercise faith in Jesus Christ and in His
- 6:40Atonement, we can then rest assured that God will always be
- 6:44faithful to us. Through our loyalty and
- 6:47friendship. We can enter again into His
- 6:50presence and enjoy eternal relationships with Him and all
- 6:54the faithful. Thank you for listening to this
