Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ian Kirkpatrick: Former All Blacks captain previews the Bledisloe Cup test against Australia
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The All Blacks are facing a big text test this
- 0:02Speaker 1: weekend as the first match and the Bladderslow Cup gets
- 0:05Speaker 1: underway against the Wallabyes in Sydney. It's been almost two
- 0:07Speaker 1: weeks since the back to back losses against South Africa,
- 0:11Speaker 1: so what's going wrong and do they have time to
- 0:13Speaker 1: fix it all? Of course Australia is not looking that
- 0:15Speaker 1: great themselves, are they? And Kirkpatrick is the former All
- 0:18Speaker 1: Blacks captain. I who do you think is going to win?
- 0:22Speaker 2: You can you can say what you like about the
- 0:25Speaker 2: previous games, but this is just a different one altogether.
- 0:29Speaker 2: And so if the All Blacks can start like they
- 0:31Speaker 2: did against the spoon Box and Joeburt, I think we've
- 0:36Speaker 2: you know, wet a good chance, but you know my
- 0:38Speaker 2: take half a game to sort of wear them down
- 0:41Speaker 2: or get on top of them. Who knows, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: it's just a you know, this game now is about
- 0:47Speaker 2: it's about physicality and so the team that's up on
- 0:53Speaker 2: or will you say, up for it on the day, yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 2: they are the ones that will come out. So it's
- 0:58Speaker 2: sort of you know, it's yeah, there's I say fifty
- 1:01Speaker 2: to fifty, but we'd like to think it might be better
- 1:04Speaker 2: than that. But the point you start predicting too much
- 1:08Speaker 2: is on most cases are pretty wrong.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad we've got you on the line, And
- 1:17Speaker 1: how do you rate raise us so far? How's he doing?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Oh? Look, he's had you know, he's got the newest
- 1:24Speaker 2: team with those guys that retired after the World Cup,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and those guys are there for a long time, so
- 1:30Speaker 2: you know, there was a pretty good team bonding in
- 1:34Speaker 2: that team, and this one's you know, a new new
- 1:39Speaker 2: era just about. So yeah, it was wasn't always going
- 1:44Speaker 2: to be easy, not going over the Salaga for two
- 1:47Speaker 2: in a row there. I mean, that's that's a pretty
- 1:50Speaker 2: big call. So you know, I wouldn't I wouldn't judge raises.
- 1:54Speaker 2: You know, if it's so far, it's too early yet.
- 1:58Speaker 2: What don't these guys are? You know, they'll settle into
- 2:00Speaker 2: a pretty good, pretty good team. I think that you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: the teams. I don't think you figured a better team
- 2:06Speaker 2: than this, I would have thought. So it's really how
- 2:10Speaker 2: they come out on the day and how the opposition
- 2:14Speaker 2: sort of play against them. We don't you know, they
- 2:16Speaker 2: don't know. They're trying to work out each other what
- 2:19Speaker 2: they might be doing or what they could do, but
- 2:22Speaker 2: it doesn't always work out that way either, so it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: you know, what they're going to play with in front
- 2:26Speaker 2: of them. That's a sort of a modern sort of cliche.
- 2:32Speaker 3: In summer, you would say you're positive, cautiously optimistic about
- 2:37Speaker 3: the state of rugby and New Zealand. You think, give
- 2:39Speaker 3: it some time, let them better, and they've got the
- 2:41Speaker 3: right team. The coach will get there and eventually we'll
- 2:44Speaker 3: get one over South Africa.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, you know, I think you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: we're in New Zealand. If you look at NTC and
- 2:52Speaker 2: Super Rugby, you know the teams want to play an
- 2:55Speaker 2: open game. I don't. It's not you know, I think
- 2:58Speaker 2: there could be a better game to play. Goodness the
- 3:01Speaker 2: rules and such that it's combative. There's no space anymore,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and it's all about taking it up and trying to
- 3:08Speaker 2: get over the advantage line with you know, with Savage,
- 3:11Speaker 2: with their big men. It's sort of about size, which
- 3:15Speaker 2: is not what the game is really all about really,
- 3:18Speaker 2: to be honest. It's about running into space like we
- 3:22Speaker 2: did in you know, Post ninety six.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And that was the n Kirkpatrick, former All Blacks captain
- 3:30Speaker 1: with US twenty three minutes after five. That game. You
