- 0:01What's up y'all? You're listening to the Extra
- 0:02Point College Football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnage,
- 0:06joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:09Daniel, we've had 12 or 12 weeks, 14 weeks of regular
- 0:13season games. It's been a month and 1/2 in
- 0:16this playoff and bowl season. We've got one game left for the
- 0:20national championship. It's Indiana, it's Miami.
- 0:24We're going to break down both of their semi final wins as well
- 0:28as preview and make a pick against the spread and for the
- 0:30game for the National championship on January 19th.
- 0:35Next time you will see us after this episode will be after the
- 0:39national championship. We'll do a natty recap and
- 0:42little post mortem on the 2025 season.
- 0:44I've got some things I'm sure you need to.
- 0:46I've got some thoughts I want to get off my chest on the state of
- 0:49college football. We've got a full offseason for
- 0:52it so but we still have one more game left.
- 0:54Is it just me or does it feel like I like I felt the same for
- 0:59the semies 2 Daniel that I'm like, man, there's a semi final
- 1:02game tonight. It just I can't believe football
- 1:04still going on. It feels like it's dragging its
- 1:06feet. Yeah, it's it's weird because
- 1:08the you know, when there's not, and this is not an indictment on
- 1:13the teams that were there. Of course, we talked about how
- 1:15this is kind of new kids on the block a little bit, but you're
- 1:18lacking some of those bigger brands that bring eyeballs,
- 1:21whether it be, I mean, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia,
- 1:24Alabama, whoever, whoever. It just lacked a little bit of
- 1:28that big game punch, I feel like.
- 1:31And when you've got that coupled with a very busy NFL cycle, very
- 1:38big head coaches moving in the NFL and, you know, obviously the
- 1:41NFL playoffs, anytime college football going up gets NFL
- 1:44playoffs. I know we'll talk about this
- 1:46more in the offseason, but that kind of, you know, they weren't
- 1:50timed out, you know, at the same time, but because they're, you
- 1:53know, on a different day of the week, NFL kind of takes over
- 1:56Saturdays in January. It kind of becomes, you know,
- 2:00one of those things where if your team isn't playing, it does
- 2:04not feel like, oh, I need to stop what I'm doing.
- 2:07And you make sure I have my game day snacks and I have all this
- 2:10stuff set aside like you normally would.
- 2:12It was kind of a, you know, I don't want to say underwhelming.
- 2:16That's, I don't think that's the right term, but it definitely
- 2:18did not feel as big of a production as you would hope it
- 2:23to be. Well, and I mean TV viewership
- 2:26numbers just came out like a couple days ago.
- 2:28Did you see these by chance? Actually this came out today.
- 2:33The Thursday night game, the Fiesta Bowl was down 11% from
- 2:39the Thursday night semi last year and the Friday night game
- 2:42was down 13% from the Friday semi final game last year.
- 2:46Look bottom line is big brands being out definitely affected
- 2:50this. Like last year that Friday game
- 2:52was Ohio State in Texas. Like it or not, more people are
- 2:57going to watch that game. I don't think TV viewership
- 3:00ratings and numbers should determine what we do because,
- 3:05yeah, the wrong way to look at this is we need more big brands
- 3:08in. Let's expand to 24 for the love
- 3:10of God, we've only had this thing.
- 3:12Please don't hear God. Can we stop?
- 3:14But I, I do think it's just interesting that again, I, I
- 3:19think that, you know, college football's growth and explosion
- 3:22in popularity is not guaranteed. And so this is this is the
- 3:27NASCAR thing, man, is don't don't count on the on the your
- 3:31diehards always showing up. You got to make sure you take
- 3:34care of your diehards and not just try to attack, attract
- 3:36casuals and count on your diehards to always be there.
- 3:40Bill Conley read about this in his latest book for Progress.
- 3:43And I thought it was he made some really good points about
- 3:45it. Ryan McGee was quoted in it
- 3:47because I didn't realize this. He was working for NASCAR at the
- 3:51time and he even heard like in meetings them say like, don't
- 3:55worry about the die hards, They'll always be there.
- 3:57And when as they're making these changes, like that was set out
- 4:00the, you know, the quiet part was set out loud.
- 4:02Yeah, And NASCAR lost their audience.
- 4:03All that being said, look, this is a football podcast.
- 4:06I think it's the greatest sport in the world.
- 4:07Still still think it's the greatest sport in the world.
- 4:10Just interesting the semi final numbers.
- 4:12And I'm like even me as a die hard, I thought it was
- 4:14interesting that I'm like, man, I feel like the the hype to the
- 4:18national championship is not, you know, like, dude, heading
- 4:22into conference championship weekend, it's like all the
- 4:24momentum, yeah, football back-to-back to back,
- 4:26back-to-back. I want it to feel that way
- 4:28hitting into the natty and not just.
- 4:30Yeah. That's a really, you know what I
- 4:31mean, way to think about it. Yeah.
- 4:34That's why that's why I like the and we can we can do a whole
- 4:36episode on this, but I like the I guess we're calling it the
- 4:39landing model of just keep going week to week, like regular
- 4:42season ends, commerce championship weekend ends.
- 4:45If we still have that that next Saturday playoff games, the next
- 4:48Saturday playoff games and what's in January 1st and we can
- 4:52end the season before the portal window opens.
- 4:55Look at that. That'd be that.
- 4:57'D be great. Solves all your problems right
- 4:59there. It solves one of the problems
- 5:02anyway, Daniel, we had some semifinal games.
- 5:05I'll start with the first one. Miami outlasts Ole Miss.
- 5:09The Cinderella story comes to an end with Ole Miss Postling
- 5:13Kiffin. Miami was favored by three there
- 5:15at the end. They win by 4.
- 5:18You took Ole Miss, didn't you? You take Ole Miss I.
- 5:20Took Ole Miss and a prayer. Just thinking, hey, Miami's
- 5:25probably better team, but Chambliss, the way he was
- 5:27playing and there was moments, man, this one went back and
- 5:31forth. And then of course, just the
- 5:34Miami being able to sustain drives at the end, being able to
- 5:37run the ball. I really think, I mean, hot
- 5:40take, you know, Carson Beck ran the last touchdown in.
- 5:43But Carson Beck and his legs have been a difference the past
- 5:47two games for Miami where he converted like a third and
- 5:5011:00. There's a third and 19, I think
- 5:53where he scrambled and made it a fourth and two, you know, stuff
- 5:57like that where it's like hidden yards.
- 5:59Where before he may have been reluctant, now with the game and
- 6:03the season on the line, he's really kind of stepped up in
- 6:07that area. You know, you and I, of course,
- 6:10Georgia fans, Carson Beck, was that Georgia?
- 6:13But I actually remember the lore of like his high school, but
- 6:16when he was a junior was when he exploded as a football player.
- 6:19He was really more of a a baseball player, of course,
- 6:21getting recruited as such. You know, he's in a
- 6:24classification for Florida and he was player of the year his
- 6:27junior year, which is what made him get recruited as a
- 6:30quarterback to all the SEC schools.
- 6:32And he had a cast of just so many D1 guys are around him at
- 6:38Mandarin High School. Well, his senior year, he
- 6:42actually lost like 90% of their production.
- 6:45And I don't know if you remember, but that was he
- 6:47actually started to focus on scrambling and doing that kind
- 6:51of stuff. And I remember when he was
- 6:52coming into Georgia thinking, Oh, he's a dual threat.
- 6:54Like because he did all that, then he didn't really do that at
- 6:57Georgia. He did it in, in certain spots,
- 6:59He felt he picked his spots, but it really felt like in this
- 7:02game, that's what would the difference was he was getting
- 7:05first downs and then ultimately that, that touchdown that that
- 7:08sealed it, that put Miami ahead and, and really gave them the
- 7:12nudge that they needed, you know, cuz their run game with
- 7:16Fletcher is phenomenal. So having that component from a
- 7:19quarterback, I think really puts defenses, you know, in a bad
- 7:23place. Yeah, he obviously was clutching
- 7:25the last drive. Dude, Chambliss looked cold for
- 7:28a little bit and then I mean, it felt like it even in the third
- 7:32quarter. I mean, it kind of with the way
- 7:35of the Georgia Olmus game of man, it feels like Miami should
- 7:38be up 14 right now and they're just letting Ole Miss stay in
- 7:42the game where I'm like, like Miami felt like they were
- 7:44dominating. And it's like they're just like,
- 7:47don't let them come back into it.
- 7:48They let Ole Miss come back into it and they let him keep
- 7:51fighting. They let Chambliss get hot.
- 7:53I was laughing at it's like, why should Georgia have run the ball
- 7:58there or let the clock roll on that last drive?
- 8:01It's because Chambliss only needed 18 seconds and he still
- 8:04had a throw into the end zone from only the 35.
- 8:07Like it wasn't like it was this from his own 40 having to heave
- 8:10it. I mean, that was a second normal
- 8:14touchdown pass, you know, or what, what could have been.
- 8:17Attempts, yeah. I mean, I was telling someone
- 8:19they were like, I went to bed, like what happened?
- 8:21And I'm like, I think I want to get it right because I was like
- 8:25the game was where was it with let's see here It was 17 to 16
- 8:33with what 10 minutes to go and it ended 3120.
- 8:37So it was just like the I mean, the the fourth quarter field
- 8:39goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown.
- 8:41And then, you know, failed him at Hail Mary attempt.
- 8:43End of the game was just electric.
- 8:46My name is playing for a national championship.
- 8:48I Ding of this. I just, I need to get this off
- 8:52my chest and we have a podcast so I can I'm allowed to say it.
- 8:56Say it. I'm not OK, I'm going to.
- 9:00We're going to talk about Indiana, Oregon.
- 9:02I'm rooting for Indiana. All right, I'm not going to tell
- 9:05you I'm picking yet, but here's why.
- 9:08Football for so long has rewarded the best team and with
- 9:13with the playoff structure or championship structure or
- 9:16whatever. Most of the time, the best team
- 9:19through the regular season in college football was crowned the
- 9:22national champion eventually, whether it be they play in a big
- 9:25bowl game and the voters vote on it.
- 9:28And sure, you had some years where that didn't work and you
- 9:30had split national championships, sure.
- 9:32But if it was the BCS, you know, through 1213 games, you got the
- 9:37best two teams and one game to prove which one of you is
- 9:40better. And I mean, I would say over 90%
- 9:43of the time the team that was the best or 12 games won the
- 9:46national championship last year. I did.
- 9:49I did not think that happened. And if Miami were to win the
- 9:52title game on the night, which we're more than capable of, I do
- 9:54think the spreads of when I first saw it, I thought it was a
- 9:57little high. I just, I, I don't like that
- 10:00we're giving, you know, a lot's been written about and said
- 10:03about Miami and this amazing run.
- 10:06And I think people are acting like Miami's the little guy.
- 10:09My gosh. When Miami started the season
- 10:12Labor Day weekend, they had a top 6 roster in the sport,
- 10:16bottom line. So they had 12 games to prove
- 10:19that they can. That doesn't mean everything,
- 10:20but they can turn that top 6 roster on paper into a
- 10:23championship contender. They lost two of those games and
- 10:27in a previous era they would not have been rewarded with the
- 10:31chance to compete for a championship.
- 10:32I've never doubted Miami could compete for a championship.
- 10:35I doubted they could actually earn it through 12 games and
- 10:39play their way in. And I know this, I know we get
- 10:41expansion now, but I don't like that Miami, who is unarguably
- 10:45not one of the best teams in the country through 12 games, is 1
- 10:49game away from saying basically we we were the best team in 2025
- 10:54and that wasn't the case. Indiana, on the other hand, has
- 10:57absolutely been the best team all season.
- 11:00So I'm rooting for them. I'm rooting for college
- 11:01football. Best team to win the national
- 11:05championship on Monday night. That's my rooting interest.
- 11:07Is that fair? My being too harsh?
- 11:09My being too critical. No, I mean, that's like the
- 11:11ultimate indictment on the sport.
- 11:13Like what everybody wanted, or at least the stated goal, was
- 11:20Indiana, and the unintended consequence is Miami.
- 11:24It's fair. Well said, Daniel.
- 11:26Well said. OK, Indiana.
- 11:30I mean, I had the feeling someone said this on Twitter.
- 11:34I don't know who it was. I wish I could give them credit
- 11:37when Oregon, you know, pick six in the first play and you're
- 11:40like, oh, wow. And they start to show these
- 11:42crowd shots and it's like, wow, like that place is berserk.
- 11:46It might be 95% Indiana fans. Unbelievable.
- 11:50Like scenes Dante Moore drives down with an immediate answer
- 11:55for a touchdown and I'm like, here we go.
- 11:57What an answer. 2 quarterbacks playing their best game.
- 12:00And someone said after the fact they were like, this was like
- 12:02when TCU scored the touchdown to go down 10, seven against
- 12:06Georgia and the natty and everyone was like, here we go.
- 12:11We got a game. We got a game.
- 12:13We. Got out of it yet and we know
- 12:16how that went and we know how this game went.
- 12:18I mean, I, I said it, I was like here we go 7 all you know, let's
- 12:22see Indiana's response. Well, Indy Indiana's response
- 12:26was 35 seven at halftime. And it's like, oh man.
- 12:29And they didn't need to do anything in the second-half, but
- 12:31the final score was I mean, believe it or not, 56 to 22.
- 12:34It was way worse than that and. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:37Indiana, it looks like Daniel that they and look, I know
- 12:43there's been cheating stuff. We shared it.
- 12:44Whatever. I don't think that I mean this
- 12:47as a compliment. It looks like they know what
- 12:49play you're in on defense. It looks like they know exactly
- 12:53what you're in and what you're going to run.
- 12:55And it seems like you're dropping 8 when it's a pass play
- 12:57and it seems like they're sending 6 when it's a run play
- 12:59in the right gaps. They're jumping flat routes
- 13:01like, and I just compliment the scouting because they are so
- 13:06prepared, so prepared and they blow Oregon out.
- 13:10I mean, it was, I couldn't believe what I was watching.
- 13:12And I, I bet there's people who turned it off and the viewership
- 13:14number say so because of how big of a blowout it was.
- 13:17And again, they they continue to prove me wrong and they've
- 13:20proven through they've played 15 games that they've been the best
- 13:23team through 15 games in college football this year.
- 13:25Yeah, I mean, OK, here's story time for me.
- 13:27OK? You and I both, you know, we're
- 13:29family men, all right? We've got beautiful wives.
- 13:32We've got children, apparently. We're fathers of young children.
- 13:37Yes, football is very important to us, all right?
- 13:41Also, there are some things that sometimes supersede in the
- 13:44moment, especially if it's not your team technically playing.
- 13:49YouTube TV is phenomenal where you can hit catch up to live
- 13:52plays through key plays and it gives you some great snippets.
- 13:57So shout out YouTube TV. Please don't take ESPN away
- 13:59again. All right, this game, All right,
- 14:03Right around bedtime, I'm getting my daughter's in bed.
- 14:07Both of them are in bed. They're, you know, 7 and now 4.
- 14:10So I'm like, all right, great. We've got, you know, I still
- 14:14call him a newborn, but I guess he's four months old.
- 14:17I'm getting him together and we're doing something.
- 14:20I think he had a diaper change. It's a whole whole situation.
- 14:24And I'm like huffing and puffing and I'm like, OK, well, do you
- 14:27know the the kickoff's delayed? So we're fine.
- 14:29Everything's fine. I'm going to make it back
- 14:31because I really like seeing the beginning of a game.
- 14:33I mean, I'm a purist. I know you are too.
- 14:35Like, dude, just let me. I want to see national anthem.
- 14:37I want this, the whole thing to start.
- 14:39I'm like, look, if I can at least see opening kickoff, we're
- 14:41fine. I don't have to, you know, if I
- 14:43need to pause at the first commercial is fine.
- 14:46Anyways, I'm saying this whole story because I finally get my
- 14:51son ready and I bring him in. I'm like, I'll just bring him in
- 14:54to watch the first couple of plays while my wife gets ready
- 14:57because then she's going to take the kid and I'll be able to
- 15:00watch this game in in peace uninterrupted.
- 15:04I I swear we're not a 1950s household, but that's how it
- 15:06goes. Anyways, that being said, I
- 15:10hustle and I'm like oh OK, I've only missed the opening kickoff
- 15:15because all I do is look at the clock.
- 15:17Oregon has the ball. I had seen that they were going
- 15:20to receive. So I saw they were going to
- 15:22receive, ran back to the room and then came back out and I saw
- 15:25the clock what was like 1414 and yeah, 14521449 and they ran a
- 15:33play. I was like oh OK.
- 15:34I was like and I still have not noticed on the score bug how it
- 15:39says 7 to nothing. I hadn't noticed.
- 15:40And I'm sitting here like, OK, I'm like, oh dude, Oregon,
- 15:44they're coming with it. And I look and I'm like 7.
- 15:47Nothing. I thought Oregon received.
- 15:49Did you say 7? And I was like maybe I missed
- 15:51some, maybe I missed something that they did not receive and
- 15:54maybe I heard wrong, but in the end received and they ran it
- 15:57back. I go back and watch because I
- 15:59missed the pick 6. And so I came back and watched
- 16:02it flabbergasted. Dude, that was an amazing play.
- 16:07And dude, it was, it was, it was so good.
- 16:10And then watching Oregon go down, same feeling that you had
- 16:14go down and score. Indiana then answers and then
- 16:16there was some go back and forth and then Oregon got a punt
- 16:20punted to them. And I don't know if they fumble
- 16:22on that play. I can't remember the exchange,
- 16:25but that was their moment to go down and like tie it up.
- 16:29It was 14 to 7 and Oregon received the ball back and then
- 16:32they didn't. I think they had a turnover as
- 16:35they were. They were, you know.
- 16:37They had like a fourth down they went for they didn't get and it
- 16:41was like a turnover very quickly.
- 16:42It was just, it's like when it rains, it pours and.
- 16:45Yeah, it, it turned into, you know, very much yeah.
- 16:49Let me see here. Yeah, I'm not going to, I'm not
- 16:51going to rehash it all. Anyways.
- 16:52It was very much I, I just remember being like Oregon's in
- 16:55this. I was, of course pulling for
- 16:56Oregon because I wanted to be right.
- 16:57Picked Oregon. And then as soon as that
- 17:00happened, I was like, dude, Annie is just too good.
- 17:04You can't go 3 O in turnovers against this Indiana team.
- 17:08They're not going to beat themselves.
- 17:10You've said it, others have said it.
- 17:12And so I mean Fernando Mendoza, 77 passing yards at 5
- 17:16touchdowns. I mean, this guy's on a short
- 17:17field all game. You know, they're not, they're
- 17:19not having to, they're they're not having a good length of the
- 17:23field. They're doing the little things
- 17:24right. They're playing.
- 17:25They're good in all three phases.
- 17:27It's not just, you know, a good defense that's propping up the
- 17:30offense or vice versa, or a special team like they're
- 17:33putting themselves in position every game.
- 17:35This was the quintessential opportunity right here of a very
- 17:40good Oregon team with very many NFL players all across the
- 17:45field. So, yeah, I mean, hats off to
- 17:48Indiana. The family.
- 17:50And I went on Saturday, Jacob, I mentioned this to you and you
- 17:53and Hunter, I was driving up to Chattanooga just to go for a
- 17:57Family Day on Saturday, and I'd forgotten that.
- 18:00Oh, yeah, the Peach Bowl was in Atlanta, and we were surrounded
- 18:04by Indiana fans. I mean, there was probably, I
- 18:06mean, probably 100 people that I saw on the way that we're all
- 18:10traveling back home. So it kind of gave me a sense of
- 18:14I don't know if nostalgia is the right word, but just like, hey,
- 18:17this is really cool to see a fan base going through this for the
- 18:22first time for whatever we think about the current state of
- 18:24college football, Indiana. So I'm with you.
- 18:27I am pulling for Indiana in this championship for this for the
- 18:30reasons that you stated of wanting the a champion to be
- 18:33representative of the whole season and how they've they've
- 18:36overcome all that. But really do these Indiana
- 18:38fans, I mean, they are experiencing this for the first
- 18:41time. It's really cool story.
- 18:43And like they've been waiting for something like this to
- 18:47happen. If someone was like all these
- 18:48brand new Indiana fans, I'm like, they've been Indiana fans.
- 18:51This is a huge, you know, alumni, and I think it's the
- 18:57biggest living alumni. Someone said that.
- 19:01But these are all basketball fans that have been like, yeah,
- 19:04I mean, we'll watch Indiana football, but like, it do
- 19:08people. They haven't had anything to
- 19:10cheer about, so now they do. Congrats to them.
- 19:13This is very fun. But yeah, dude, we're here.
- 19:17They won. We've got Indiana, Miami.
- 19:20Let's not belabor the point, dude.
- 19:21Let's talk about this national championship.
- 19:24Indiana, Miami, 15 and O versus 13 and two, one more game.
- 19:33Indiana going for, I mean, it's not even controversial at this
- 19:37point. Indiana going for what could be
- 19:39one of the greatest runs ever in the sport, one of the greatest
- 19:42stories in the history of this word.
- 19:44I would say if Indiana wins, it would be the greatest story in
- 19:46the sport in my lifetime and by far since we started covering
- 19:51college football on this podcast.
- 19:54Indiana's a 8 1/2 point favorite.
- 19:56This, this started off Daniel. I thought I'd sell it at 5 1/2
- 19:59for 6 1/2, maybe start off at 6 1/2 and it is crept up to 8 1/2.
- 20:04I've seen some people pick Miami, though.
- 20:06We'll see what the late money does, but we've got it here at 8
- 20:081/2 points. It's in Miami.
- 20:12It is in or Coral Gables. I mean, it's in the stadium or
- 20:15Miami plays their home football games for the national
- 20:17championship. They're in Hard Rock Stadium.
- 20:20Daniel, who do you have winning the college football national
- 20:23championship? Yeah.
- 20:24You know what the get in price is for this?
- 20:27Have you seen it? Oh, I looked at was it like 7
- 20:30grand or something? No.
- 20:31No, no, it's not that bad, but it is. 3 grand. $3100 yeah, 3
- 20:35grand to get in that mean there's like, you know, $30,000
- 20:40seats in the lower bowl, I mean. Super Bowl million.
- 20:43Dollar, Yeah. So this is this is a big time
- 20:46deal. It's crazy, you know, Miami
- 20:49being in it at home is crazy when Miami fans don't normally
- 20:55even go to Hard Rock Stadium. They didn't realize that they
- 20:59could do this all year and it would be cheaper.
- 21:02Their team maybe wouldn't lose at home.
- 21:05Indiana, I think this is going to be Indiana crowd again.
- 21:08I think these people have money to spend.
- 21:10They're waiting on it. So, yeah, I'm excited to see
- 21:14this one. I think that, you know, you've
- 21:16got as far as the breakdown of the game, they are very similar
- 21:21in that they're both balanced. You're not going to make it this
- 21:24far and not be balanced. They both play complimentary
- 21:26football. I think that you've got
- 21:28obviously the higher rated players from Miami that have
- 21:31been maybe higher recruited and you know, whatever you want to
- 21:34do. But Indiana has the benefit of,
- 21:37you know, having guys that have played together a lot, guys that
- 21:41are older. And I think that, you know,
- 21:44there there's been that stat going around.
- 21:46And I think we've maybe mentioned that last week about
- 21:48obviously the age of these Indiana players and just the
- 21:51product of what, you know, the portal and the, you know, being
- 21:55able to approve the additional years for some of these JMU
- 21:59players that have transferred. But their average age is 23 and
- 22:03like the Green Bay Packers average age is 25.
- 22:05So, you know, people joke about the idea of, you know, like Ohio
- 22:10State playing against the terrible Cleveland Browns, who
- 22:14would win? And it's like, dude, Miles
- 22:16Garrett would have 10 sacks by halftime.
- 22:18You know, this is you're talking about a grown man playing
- 22:21against college players. That's kind.
- 22:24That's kind of how Indiana has, you know, something that we
- 22:28haven't been paying enough attention to throughout the
- 22:29regular season just because of the brand.
- 22:32It's been right off Indiana. At least I have.
- 22:34So that's going to be a factor. Man, you've got grown men
- 22:37playing. Get some guys who are grown men,
- 22:40but they're, you know, not as physically mature.
- 22:43You know, these guys. If, if there's a 25 year old
- 22:46Indiana player going against the 19 year old in Miami player, you
- 22:50know, it doesn't matter how much higher rated the Miami guy is.
- 22:54If the Indiana player is comparable, he's got grown man's
- 22:57strength. He might have a mortgage, you
- 22:59know, so I I'm taking that into account as well, but I don't
- 23:04want that to minimize. Fernando Mendoza has been
- 23:07incredibly efficient and I think that he's just been all I talked
- 23:12about Carson Beck with his legs earlier.
- 23:14Mendoza with his legs has gotten out of a couple of bad plays
- 23:18against Oregon and you know, against Ohio, Ohio State and the
- 23:23Big 10 championship. And he throughout the throughout
- 23:26the season, he's had some big plays with his legs that I think
- 23:29have extended drives or have have given Indiana some life.
- 23:34So I am picking Indiana. They're probably hate me to do
- 23:38this. This is the first time I've
- 23:39picked them all year. I'm going to pick them to cover.
- 23:42I think that Miami has enough turnover ability or problem.
- 23:48I think they're going to run into some things with Indiana
- 23:51where Indiana's again, not going to beat themselves.
- 23:54Miami might take some chances that will lead to additional
- 23:57Indiana possessions. They've got that gene in them.
- 24:01I mean, Carson Best got 11 interceptions.
- 24:03He's been a little bit of a hot streak recently, of course,
- 24:05getting to where he is now. But I think that that is a
- 24:09possibility. If they played it straight up, I
- 24:11think Indiana wins. But the line, for it to be a
- 24:15cover for Indiana, I think there's gonna have to be
- 24:17turnovers. And I think that that happens.
- 24:19So give me the Hoosiers. I'm gonna lay the points.
- 24:22I'm also taking Indiana and I'm also laying the points, not just
- 24:25rooting for it. I'm picking them, Daniel.
- 24:27But let me say the other side, though, because this is the
- 24:29national championship, so we've got time to break this down a
- 24:31little bit. Like how does Miami win this
- 24:33game? I think it's easy.
- 24:34They continue to run the ball at the clip they've done throughout
- 24:38the playoff, which is at least 150 yards a game.
- 24:40They've done that in every playoff game.
- 24:41Their defense, a lot will be said about this.
- 24:43I'll say it here too, Their lines of scrimmage outweighs
- 24:47Indiana's lines of scrimmage. I think it's by an average of
- 24:50like 40 lbs. It's something crazy of like the
- 24:53Miami's much bigger on the lines of scrimmage in look in 2025
- 24:58that still wins football games. So I think that if Miami were to
- 25:03win this game, they dominate the line of scrimmage, which they're
- 25:05more than capable of. They're able to run the ball
- 25:08against a very stout Indiana run defense, which no one's really
- 25:12been able to do all season. And they score touchdowns in the
- 25:15red zone. And Carson Beck is going to have
- 25:17to come up clutch in that area cuz Indiana's been elite in the
- 25:21red zone. So Carson Beck, maybe he's been
- 25:24decent at that this year. When that field gets short,
- 25:27though, that Indiana defense has been locked down.
- 25:30I don't think it happens. I think Indiana's going to hold
- 25:32them to under 150 rushing yards. India.
- 25:35Look, I've said turnovers are random.
- 25:37They absolutely are. Indiana keeps forcing him.
- 25:41And I think it's it's it's not random whenever you scout so
- 25:44well that you put yourself in the position for turnovers to
- 25:48happen. It's not random when you've
- 25:51already played through two offensive lines, no three
- 25:55offensive lines, including the Big 10 Championship that are
- 25:58bigger than you this season in a row and you still for sacks and
- 26:02sack fumbles with rushing 3 or 4.
- 26:05Indiana's done it all season. They've been the best team in
- 26:07college football season. I think Fernando Mendoza
- 26:11probably has like a 24 of 30 kind of night for 2:50.
- 26:17Just nice and nice and easy. I think this guy, I think
- 26:20Indiana gets the 31st. I don't think Miami can keep up.
- 26:24That's kind of how I see the game going.
- 26:25I think this is like a 31 to 20 national championship for
- 26:31Indiana. I think Miami keeps it closer
- 26:33than Oregon did because I think that's the style of game they're
- 26:36going to play where my like my, I think there there will be
- 26:39limited possession. There wasn't no Oregon game that
- 26:41got out of hand quickly because of the the whole Oregon found
- 26:45themselves in. So they they abandoned the rush
- 26:47very quickly in that game. And so a lot more touches, a lot
- 26:51less clock running off a lot ball, ball was coming on the
- 26:54ground more stopping the clock. So I think there are less
- 26:56possessions in this game. So we'll keep it lower scoring.
- 26:59But I do think Indiana wins and covers go 16 and O first team to
- 27:02go 16 and O in college football ever.
- 27:04And that we're sitting here talking about next Wednesday.
- 27:07One of the greatest stories in college football history.
- 27:09I think of that's not being hyperbolic whenever I say that.
- 27:12So give me the Hoosiers to win and cover when the national
- 27:16championship. And Daniel, we've talked with us
- 27:18a lot on this podcast. Be the first team ever to
- 27:21breakthrough the blue chip ratio and we can talk about what
- 27:26that's. Going to say, do you think that,
- 27:27but Elliott's pulling for Miami, known Florida State guy pulling
- 27:30for Miami to keep his blue chip ratio intact.
- 27:33I don't think so. He has said even the article
- 27:35that like there will be a team that breaks this.
- 27:38But I'll say the the I was going to talk about this after the
- 27:42natty if it happens, the profile of a team that could beat it, he
- 27:46said, was always OK. Who are teams that almost did
- 27:49it? Oregon in 2010 was not a blue
- 27:52chip ratio team. It's like a Heisman level
- 27:55quarterback, which Indiana does have that like, you know, brings
- 28:00a roster, but it helps them play above that level or like a few
- 28:04skilled players to help with that.
- 28:07And I thought in the playoff era wouldn't happen.
- 28:09Here's where I think Indiana's the exception is because I still
- 28:11think they're the exception, not the rule in that how many more
- 28:15teams are we going to have to have an average age of 23 years
- 28:18old where these players have played together?
- 28:21It's been at 2 schools, but they've stayed together for Four
- 28:23Seasons under Signetti and they've kind of all just hung
- 28:25together and this is their fourth year in the system, their
- 28:28elite. This has been amazing.
- 28:30Coaching next year's Indiana team, regardless of Monday
- 28:33night's result, is going to be a fascinating case study because
- 28:38this roster just. I mean, unless the unless you're
- 28:41getting 10 years of eligibility, the rosters not hanging around
- 28:44much longer, so. Yes, this is 47 players that'll
- 28:48be out of eligibility that are currently in there.
- 28:52Yeah, they'll have 22 seniors next year.
- 28:55I did go look at it. 22 seniors. So it's a normal senior.
- 28:58It's a big senior class, but just a normal senior class.
- 29:02A normal big Senior class 22 Seniors 8.
- 29:06Juniors 41. Wow, yeah, that's it's so funny.
- 29:10That's another thing. The term freshman, sophomore,
- 29:13whatever gets so confusing when red shirts and it's just like,
- 29:16all right, how many a rule got introduced?
- 29:19We we've kind of stayed away from college football news just
- 29:21because I want to focus on the football of it all.
- 29:22And we'll have a whole offseason talk about some news and stuff.
- 29:25But the red shirt rule was approved.
- 29:28It's got coach approval for the red shirt to be extended through
- 29:31nine games. Daniel, what are we doing?
- 29:34Can we just give everyone five years of eligibility and be done
- 29:36with it like and let's just like it's.
- 29:38You're saying it got approved where they can play in nine
- 29:41games and steal red shirt? Yes, like unanimous coach
- 29:44approval at least. I don't know if the rules gone
- 29:46through yet, but I'm just like, can we just like, this is silly.
- 29:49Can we just give everyone five years and be done?
- 29:52Just like you get 5 years from the time you start and like, you
- 29:55know, if you start in 2020, you're done by 2025 period.
- 29:58You're done. Got to get kicked out anyway.
- 30:01I'm just like, what are we doing 9 games?
- 30:02What are we doing? Just give him a, just give him a
- 30:04fifth year. Much easier to keep track of.
- 30:06Then we could just be like, what year they, they're a third year
- 30:09player. They're a fourth year player.
- 30:10They're a fifth year player and we can just easy to track.
- 30:14It's too simple. Daniel.
- 30:15We've both got Indiana. Gosh, I hope we don't jinx them.
- 30:19We we've not picked India. I mean, I picked Illinois on
- 30:21this podcast. I picked Oregon on this podcast.
- 30:23We previewed a Penn State potential upset.
- 30:25Even though we didn't talk about that game.
- 30:28We both picked Ohio State. I picked Indiana gets Bama.
- 30:32You know what I did pick? Indiana gets Bama dude.
- 30:34I picked Kennesaw State to be Indiana.
- 30:36I am the most guilty of anybody for this whole.
- 30:42So Indiana fans, you know, hey, I'm sorry, but also you're
- 30:48welcome if you'd like to think about it like that.
- 30:51Did you know it was at least four games this year?
- 30:54The Indiana had a first drive Pick 6.
- 30:58I did not know that. Again, talking about scouting,
- 31:00that's jumping some route to know what's coming early.
- 31:03So look transparently. I'm rooting for them.
- 31:05They've and again, my rooting interest is they have been the
- 31:07best team through 15 games. I want to see them finish it.
- 31:11I want the best team in college football to be crowned the
- 31:13national champion, which is what I think the job of a playoff or
- 31:18playing for a national championship should do a good
- 31:20job of. All right, one quick thing.
- 31:23The funniest outcome is Miami winning because the ACC is on
- 31:28the outs and everybody thinks they're illegitimate.
- 31:31They were probably going to be left out of the playoff in and
- 31:35of itself, not just Miami, but the ACC as a whole.
- 31:38And they are currently going through turmoil.
- 31:42Miami is not even one of the big dogs in the ACC.
- 31:45Allegedly Clemson and Florida State are trying to big dog the
- 31:48ACC while imploding and it's it is a crazy scenario.
- 31:54And Miami, who did not win the ACC, potentially winning it all.
- 32:00I mean, it would be a the most ACC coastal thing for college
- 32:05football to do is for Miami to win.
- 32:08And so that's all I can think of.
- 32:10If dude, if Miami was the national championship, imagine
- 32:13what Virginia Duke could have done in this playoff.
- 32:14Considering. Manny Diaz won the ACC before
- 32:18Miami did, but Miami's about to win the natty.
- 32:23I saw that. Go ahead.
- 32:25I mean, I was just going to say like Manny Diaz, the ultimate
- 32:29Miami Hurricane, the fact that he went there and did what he
- 32:33did it do so that might he walked so Miami could run.
- 32:37That's right. Yeah.
- 32:39I love it Daniel. We will be back next Wednesday
- 32:43to recap the national championship and put a bow in
- 32:47the 2025 season. What kind of recap the whole
- 32:49season? Do a post mortem?
