- 0:00Speaker 1: But we know that the Salvation Army's Red Shield appeal
- 0:04Speaker 1: is currently on and joining me on the line right
- 0:07Speaker 1: now from the Salvation Army, I have got Sally on
- 0:10Speaker 1: the line. Good morning to you.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Oh, good morning, Katie.
- 0:14Speaker 1: How's it going? And how has the red Shield appeal
- 0:17Speaker 1: been going?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Well, it's gone extremely well, I must admit. It's been
- 0:23Speaker 2: running for all of May. The actual national weekend is
- 0:27Speaker 2: the twenty eighth and twenty ninth for the Red Shield appeal,
- 0:30Speaker 2: but each state sort of does run their own program.
- 0:33Speaker 2: But in the NT we've been pretty proactive, having soldiers
- 0:38Speaker 2: and our personnel at very shopping centers every weekend through May,
- 0:43Speaker 2: including this weekend as well.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So still got them going for this weekend as well. Sally,
- 0:48Speaker 1: how do you have any idea at this point how
- 0:51Speaker 1: much money may have been raised or not?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Really? Oh, we've got yeah, pretty good idea. It's certainly
- 0:58Speaker 2: up up from last year, which is fantastic. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: we're sort of over you know, it's good over the
- 1:05Speaker 2: twenty thousand sort of mark, which is really great because
- 1:09Speaker 2: that has come from you know, people simply seeing us
- 1:13Speaker 2: in the shopping center at Bunning's doing a bit of
- 1:17Speaker 2: online stuff. As well, but that that's sort of not
- 1:19Speaker 2: really included in that total, but that's pretty much from
- 1:22Speaker 2: the public just giving us donations on the day at
- 1:27Speaker 2: our various various locations that we've been good.
- 1:31Speaker 1: That's wonderful to hear and I think that so many
- 1:34Speaker 1: around the territory understand the wonderful work that the Salvation
- 1:37Speaker 1: Army does. Talk us through what this money that's raised
- 1:41Speaker 1: throughout the Red Shield Appeal is going to go towards?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Sure, Okay, so as most people probably a where we
- 1:48Speaker 2: do run services in Alice and Catherine and Darwen, so
- 1:52Speaker 2: that money I was talking about really was just Dwan,
- 1:55Speaker 2: but we have a number of centers in Catherine and
- 1:59Speaker 2: Dearwen that are specifically for homeless people, people that are
- 2:03Speaker 2: sort of getting away from domestic violence situations where they
- 2:06Speaker 2: need urgent accommodation and relief. So that money goes pretty
- 2:14Speaker 2: much to people sell those stuff that are running these
- 2:17Speaker 2: facilities that offer straight away emergency relief because generally people
- 2:22Speaker 2: come to these centers with nothing, with absolutely nothing, so
- 2:26Speaker 2: they need all the basic items. That money goes to
- 2:29Speaker 2: that then their programs. We do run really quite extensive
- 2:34Speaker 2: outcome drug rehabilitation programs here and go on where we
- 2:37Speaker 2: accommodate those people, take them in and help them work
- 2:41Speaker 2: through that process their rehabilitation. For example, in Captain, through
- 2:46Speaker 2: our dropping center, we feed up to one hundred people
- 2:49Speaker 2: a day down there. We offer them emergency relief. Some
- 2:53Speaker 2: people are struggling borderline homeless or are homeless, so we
- 2:58Speaker 2: have a center there where they can act him come
- 3:00Speaker 2: in and wash and shower, have mills, get assistance where
- 3:04Speaker 2: they can actually get help for potential housing, paying their bills.
- 3:09Speaker 2: That's where that money goes directly into the day to
- 3:13Speaker 2: day stuff that we're offering people.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Sally, I know that you are out there this weekend.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Where can people find you? Maybe today if they're flying
- 3:22Speaker 1: around and want to make a donation. Oh?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Absolutely, So this weekend is our last weekend of having
- 3:28Speaker 2: a presence, and we're going to be just in Mitchell Street,
- 3:31Speaker 2: directly right in front of the U Shack next door
- 3:34Speaker 2: to Shenanigan. So we're hoping to catch a few other
- 3:37Speaker 2: people that might be enjoying a happy hour, I must admit.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So we'll be there from three pm on Weds today,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and we'll also be there from one tomorrow in the
- 3:46Speaker 2: same location. On Mitchell Street. You will see people their
- 3:51Speaker 2: offices or staff. They're red attire and you'll know it's
- 3:55Speaker 2: a Salvos. We'll have some signage so this will be it.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But good stuff yet just very quickly.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yep, yeah, Can I just quickly acknowledge too, the support
- 4:06Speaker 2: that we've been given is been absolutely tremendous from businesses
- 4:10Speaker 2: in the NT through our corporate launch, mcarthurers and mining
- 4:13Speaker 2: and Elders and then without the assistance of Bunnings, Caserina,
- 4:19Speaker 2: Gateway and Wallies come on board and support us in
- 4:22Speaker 2: a fantastic way with a lot of fundraisers we do
- 4:24Speaker 2: Chamber of Commerce. But extremely I must mention this Robertson
- 4:29Speaker 2: Barracks without the help of their soldiers, they have been
- 4:32Speaker 2: at every site for us for four weeks running. They volunteer.
- 4:36Speaker 2: That's our partnership that we have with the Army in
- 4:40Speaker 2: Robertson Barricks.
- 4:40Speaker 1: But wonderful stuff. Well, Sally Courtney, the public relations manager
- 4:45Speaker 1: for the Northern Territory for the Salvation Army, we really
- 4:47Speaker 1: appreciate your time this morning. Thanks so much for having
- 4:50Speaker 1: a chat with it.
