- 0:01Speaker 1: It's their Happy Family's podcast. Oh love You, No, it's
- 0:09Speaker 1: as you wish, Oh.
- 0:11Speaker 2: You Wish, and the Oscar goes to.
- 0:19Speaker 1: My mom and dad. Last week, with the help of JR.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Our magnificent producer, we put together what I think was
- 0:28Speaker 1: one of the best podcasts that we've ever done.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It was like we had our first trip to the Oscars.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Let's be serious. Did you like my speech at the end?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh, seriously, please don't do that again.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I didn't thank you. You didn't when I listen. I
- 0:39Speaker 1: didn't thank my wife where you did.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I just got like an honorable mention it tagged on
- 0:43Speaker 2: the end of everybody else. So I'm thinking, thank you
- 0:46Speaker 2: mom and dad before you thanked me? Well, I was
- 0:48Speaker 2: you thanked our children before you thanked me.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I was just following a script. I should have thought
- 0:53Speaker 1: about it more. I'm so sorry, but I'm thanking you.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Just haven't even dedicated a book to me.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Oh gosh, we should. We should just get on the
- 1:03Speaker 1: podcast before this degenerates in there's something really bad. My
- 1:07Speaker 1: name's Justin Colson. I'm a doctor of psychology and I
- 1:09Speaker 1: written six books about how to make your family happy.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And you're spending the night in the doghouse, Kylie.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So long as I'm watching a movie in the doghouse
- 1:15Speaker 1: with you, that'll be fine. Kylie is my wife.
- 1:18Speaker 2: The problem is we don't actually like the same movies.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We're in big trouble.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We don't even have a doghouse. We've got six daughters
- 1:25Speaker 1: and we just we did a podcast last week about
- 1:28Speaker 1: the movies that you must watch with your little kids.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It was kind of like a primary school aged and
- 1:34Speaker 1: younger movie list, and oh ge, it was fun and
- 1:37Speaker 1: the podcast was amazing. We'll link to it in the
- 1:39Speaker 1: show notes. Please go back and listen to it. It
- 1:41Speaker 1: was just great to listen to. Today. We've decided to
- 1:45Speaker 1: extend the movie watching list because, i mean, let's face it,
- 1:49Speaker 1: it's a really great shortcut to spending quality time with
- 1:51Speaker 1: the kids. And sometimes when you can't get quality time,
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's good to just sit down with the kids and
- 1:56Speaker 1: watch a movie and it brings you closer. Now, we
- 1:58Speaker 1: need to make a disclaimer before we be in fact,
- 2:01Speaker 1: probably two disclaimers. Number one, a lot of the movies
- 2:03Speaker 1: that we're going to share with you, and we're going
- 2:05Speaker 1: to share all the best bits that we can remember,
- 2:07Speaker 1: but we haven't actually watched a few of these movies
- 2:09Speaker 1: for a while, so our memories might be a little
- 2:11Speaker 1: bit shabby. Number two, we just want to put an acknowledgement.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You suggesting that we may have memories of these watching
- 2:18Speaker 2: them as teenagers as opposed to watching them as parents.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Is that what you mean?
- 2:21Speaker 1: What I mean is that some movies seemed really good
- 2:24Speaker 1: when we watched them, but when we go back and
- 2:26Speaker 1: watch them later, they're not nearly as good as we
- 2:28Speaker 1: thought they were. Like the Gooni's they with the bottles
- 2:31Speaker 1: face you get home? No, No, what di movie dinner?
- 2:35Speaker 1: I may like this, The Genies, I remember thinking this
- 2:42Speaker 1: is a movie for kids. Or Greece Grease, Grease, Gotchee,
- 2:48Speaker 1: They're multiplying.
- 2:50Speaker 2: We took my sister to the was it the twenty
- 2:53Speaker 2: years anniversary?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, she was twelve.
- 2:55Speaker 2: We just gotten married and she was staying with us,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and we took her to Greece and my mom was mortified.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's not as innocent as it seems.
- 3:02Speaker 4: No.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I was sitting in there and as a now married woman,
- 3:05Speaker 2: knowing every innuendo and where it was leading, and I
- 3:10Speaker 2: was thinking, my goodness.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Me, my sister's only twelve. Yeah, well, what have my
- 3:14Speaker 1: daughter's posed to friend?
- 3:16Speaker 4: You can use my virgin pit.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's nice to know it's good for something.
- 3:19Speaker 2: As a kid, all I remembered was the music. I
- 3:22Speaker 2: didn't know any of that stuff.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So the disclaimers are a number one. Some of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: movies we know that we loved at some point and
- 3:29Speaker 1: we think that we would love to watch them with
- 3:31Speaker 1: our teens, or we have watched them with the teens
- 3:32Speaker 1: and they did love them. But disclaim a number two.
- 3:36Speaker 1: In terms of content. You're on your own, do your
- 3:38Speaker 1: own research. Your values might be different to ours, and
- 3:40Speaker 1: you might sort of think, hang on, you didn't talk
- 3:42Speaker 1: about X, Y and Z. Well they are because our
- 3:44Speaker 1: values are different to yours. And there are some like
- 3:46Speaker 1: I don't like watching movies with a whole lot of
- 3:48Speaker 1: course language full stop in a story, just I don't
- 3:50Speaker 1: like it.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, one of the things that we've done with our kids,
- 3:53Speaker 2: and I think that it's been really, really helpful because
- 3:55Speaker 2: even as a young married couple, I remember us going
- 3:57Speaker 2: and watching a movie that was rated PG and we
- 3:59Speaker 2: looked at each other and went.
- 4:01Speaker 1: WHOA, how did that make a PG?
- 4:04Speaker 2: And so as parents, we've just decided that those ratings
- 4:08Speaker 2: are really just a guide, and just because it says
- 4:10Speaker 2: it's PG does not mean, by any circumstances that we
- 4:13Speaker 2: let our children watch it unless we feel like it's right.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Okay, disclaimers are out of the way. Let's go through
- 4:18Speaker 1: the list now. Last week you did five in a row.
- 4:21Speaker 1: In fact, you did about fifty three because you just
- 4:23Speaker 1: couldn't help yourself. Take turns.
- 4:25Speaker 2: We'll take turns.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Okay, let's take turns. You go first, ladies before gentlemen.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Are you okay, I'll go first. That's fine, I'll go first.
- 4:31Speaker 1: My number one movie was also in last week's list,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but I love it so much, and I think that
- 4:35Speaker 1: every teenager should watch it if they missed it in
- 4:36Speaker 1: their childhood, and they should watch it multiple times anyway, even.
- 4:40Speaker 2: If they I love you.
- 4:44Speaker 1: No, it's as you wish, oh, as you wish, she.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Didn't fall inconceivable you came here sent the Horde.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I do not think I miss what you're thinking, missed
- 4:56Speaker 1: the Princess Briane. It's the top of my list for everybody,
- 4:59Speaker 1: no matter who, no matter where you are. Princess Bride,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I love the Pit of Despair.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Don't even think about.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Trying to escape.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Then I'm here to I die.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. Should I share my two teenage favorites,
- 5:18Speaker 2: like as a teenager?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Okay, well, if you're doing that, so Princess Bride was
- 5:21Speaker 1: one of mine, I'm gonna share my other one. It
- 5:23Speaker 1: was called north Shore and it was a surfing movie.
- 5:25Speaker 4: For okay, bra restarts just about here, and it stretches
- 5:35Speaker 4: all the way down there. So when a wave breaks here,
- 5:37Speaker 4: don't be there.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Are you going to get drilled? Even to this day,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I can still recite almost the entire.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Watched that once. Yeah, he very unmemorable.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Hi, how do you two? He's so hardly here? Doesn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: even know he's Harley.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Now, yeah, you don't belong over here.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Beat it, Harley, buddy, this is our waves. Oh yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 1: well I don't see your name. I could just keep
- 5:57Speaker 1: on going at what are your two favorites?
- 6:00Speaker 2: I hope my mum's not listening.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Oh really, what are we going to hear? Missus Colson?
- 6:06Speaker 2: So my big girls had to be very big before
- 6:10Speaker 2: I let them watch them. But my absolute favorites as
- 6:13Speaker 2: a teenager was Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts. I tried
- 6:16Speaker 2: to go get a dress on Dale drive to day
- 6:18Speaker 2: and the women wouldn't help me.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And I have all this money now and no dress.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I can I expect you to help me, but I
- 6:24Speaker 1: had to buy a dress for dinner tonight. Nobody will
- 6:27Speaker 1: help me.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayzey.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Nobody puts people in the corner, no.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Time of.
- 6:37Speaker 1: The truth. Pretty risky for a teenager to be watching those.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Well, you know, no one has had permission to watch those.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Some people right now are listening to this and thinking,
- 6:47Speaker 1: oh my goodness, were you even allowed to watch Home
- 6:50Speaker 1: and Away in your house? I was, what do we
- 6:54Speaker 1: get on?
- 6:54Speaker 3: So?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Well? All right, so they were our favorite teenage movies.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Princess Bride is still at the top of my movie list.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Everyone should watch that. Do you want to do another one?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Or should I dive in with my second one? Okay,
- 7:04Speaker 1: my second one maybe one of the greatest movies oft time.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Captain Like Catain, Set Gown, Mister Anderson, Dead Poet Society,
- 7:12Speaker 1: Robert Willison.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It was literally at the top of my list, just
- 7:15Speaker 2: hands down, such a thought provoking and deeply meaningful movie.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Gather you rosebuds while you may. The Latin term for
- 7:24Speaker 3: that sentiment is Carpe diem, who knows what that means?
- 7:28Speaker 3: Carpe dim that sees the day so much impact.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Robin Williams, I just hands down, such an amazing
- 7:36Speaker 2: actor and devastated when he died.
- 7:40Speaker 3: A medicine, law, business engineering. These are nobel pursuits and
- 7:44Speaker 3: necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, roman love because
- 7:52Speaker 3: of what we stay alive for.
- 7:53Speaker 1: What a great movie. In just a sec We're going
- 7:55Speaker 1: to come back and share another handful of movies that
- 7:57Speaker 1: we reckon. Every parent should watch with their team. It's
- 8:00Speaker 1: the Happy Families Podcast.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Imagine a home where discipline got results without anyone having
- 8:06Speaker 5: to feel bad or in trouble. The do's and don'ts
- 8:08Speaker 5: of discipline. There's a webinar to help parents set limits
- 8:11Speaker 5: with love, compassion, and humanity. Find it now at happy
- 8:14Speaker 5: families dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's the Happy Families Podcast, the podcast for the time
- 8:20Speaker 2: poor parent who just wants answers now. And today we
- 8:22Speaker 2: are sharing some of our favorite movies for teenagers.
- 8:26Speaker 1: My next one are going to sing it You tell
- 8:28Speaker 1: me if you know what it is. Everywhere week ago,
- 8:32Speaker 1: people want to know who we are, where we come from,
- 8:36Speaker 1: so we tell them.
- 8:37Speaker 2: This is a football movie and I I can see it.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Denzel Washington. No, it's not Forever Strong. That was good,
- 8:45Speaker 1: but it's remember the title.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh I remember the Titans. Yes, brilliant.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Everybody has to watch that movie with their teenagers.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Okay, so I've got a couple that I reckon are
- 8:55Speaker 2: up there hidden figures?
- 8:57Speaker 1: Oh? Yes? And I work at dog day and night,
- 9:03Speaker 1: living off a coffee from a put none of you
- 9:05Speaker 1: want to touch.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So we watched this a few years ago with the girls,
- 9:09Speaker 2: and number one, I love the empowerment of girl power
- 9:13Speaker 2: all the way, and I just I love that this
- 9:15Speaker 2: movie celebrates a black woman and her amazing gifts.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And talents accomplishment.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Wow, it was just insane, and it was such a
- 9:24Speaker 2: great movie to watch with our girls and talk to
- 9:26Speaker 2: them about all of the things that they can do
- 9:29Speaker 2: with their potential.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And more colored reshrooms, no more white restrooms.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Pilot a few really funny ones that our girls have
- 9:38Speaker 2: just loved. She's the Man was just literally at the
- 9:41Speaker 2: top of the list for our girls.
- 9:42Speaker 5: I can I am a job?
- 9:46Speaker 1: How did you when we asked them movies to watch
- 9:48Speaker 1: with parents and teens. She's the Man, She's the Man.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Just such a fun movie. But again, it really touches
- 9:55Speaker 2: on this idea that here's this girl and she's amazingly talented,
- 9:59Speaker 2: but he's not recognized because she's a girl.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Gender issues.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, great conversations, a really really good conversation.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And while we're on great soccer movies about teenagers, Benda
- 10:07Speaker 1: like Becka.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Why don't just get off a flame?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Impact she's more interested in playing football, right man? And
- 10:13Speaker 1: Chasing Boys were quite frankly, I'm over the moment about that.
- 10:16Speaker 1: How good it's a good movie.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yes, totally. Jimunji has to get a special mention.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Any last words, it's ju Munji. I got a couple more. Okay,
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'm going to give an honorable mention to Cinderella man
- 10:35Speaker 1: Russell Crowe.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Then it's not working and go back and cheap.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I thought it was just the one fake.
- 10:42Speaker 5: In front of us one hundred and Sony found dollars.
- 10:45Speaker 3: It's I can train our Dada's right there. That's a
- 10:48Speaker 3: second chance.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I just reckon. Sitting down and watching amazing sport movies
- 10:52Speaker 1: with teenagers is fantastic. And when they've got an incredible,
- 10:56Speaker 1: incredible story of persistence and doing something amazing Russell Crowe.
- 10:59Speaker 1: He's a it's the nineteen twenties.
- 11:02Speaker 2: If you're going to talk about Russell Crowe, we can't
- 11:04Speaker 2: go past laymen.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Oh, musicals are awesome. We love musicals. Okay, I'll give
- 11:09Speaker 1: you that. There is nothing on our love we share.
- 11:12Speaker 1: It is either a bush or shove. So my last couple,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I love Matt Damon and we bought a zoop. Thanks.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know anything about animals and zeus.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, it's a it is, it is what it is.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It is what it is.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Sometimes I don't know what it is it is.
- 11:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I didn't write that one down, but I was actually
- 11:33Speaker 2: thinking about that one. So it was a really good movie.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's such a great movie, this one you might not remember.
- 11:38Speaker 1: How could I possibly be expected to handle school in
- 11:40Speaker 1: a day like this? Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I've never seen it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: So much fun and such a great movie for kids
- 11:47Speaker 1: to watch, like it's such a great teenage movie, skipping
- 11:50Speaker 1: school for the day, stealing a Ferrari or borrowing a Ferrari?
- 11:52Speaker 4: What it is?
- 11:53Speaker 3: My father spent three years restoring this car.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It is his love, it is his passion, is his fault.
- 12:01Speaker 1: He didn't lack the garage. It's just such a fun
- 12:04Speaker 1: and funny movie. I asked for a car, I got
- 12:07Speaker 1: a computer. How was that for being born on a
- 12:09Speaker 1: bad saying? The Last of the Mohicans? If English Locke
- 12:12Speaker 1: and I'll be trusted. Maybe these people do better making
- 12:14Speaker 1: their own peace with the French. That is sedestion, That
- 12:17Speaker 1: is the truth. Teens love big emotions and this is
- 12:21Speaker 1: a heavy and kind of bloodthirsty movie. And my goodness,
- 12:25Speaker 1: it's tragic at every level. And yet when I was
- 12:29Speaker 1: a teenager, I loved The Last of the Mohicans Daniel
- 12:32Speaker 1: day Lewis. The soundtrack just takes you away.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Oh those soundtracks amazing.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So that's our list. Have we missed anything? Do you
- 12:41Speaker 1: want to make any more honorable mention as missus Happy Families?
- 12:43Speaker 2: No, I'm done?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Okay Jr. Thank you again for an extraordinary job putting
- 12:51Speaker 1: together a podcast for the ages. We really hope that
- 12:55Speaker 1: you've enjoyed it, and we'd love for you to join
- 12:57Speaker 1: us in the Facebook chat. What movies do you reckon
- 12:59Speaker 1: teenagers should be which shouldn't be watching? What are your
