- 0:00Chapter 27 from the book of Jeremiah as a reminder, we read
- 0:06scripture because all scripture is God breathed and is useful
- 0:12for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
- 0:15righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly
- 0:19equipped for every good work. That's according to Second
- 0:22Timothy 3, verses 16 through 17. The other thing about it is, as
- 0:28Romans 10/17 says, consequently faith comes from hearing the
- 0:34message, and the message is heard through the word about
- 0:38Christ. Sometimes we have Christ in our
- 0:41readings and sometimes we don't, and sometimes they're
- 0:44foreshadowings. But many of the readings do
- 0:48point to Christ even in the Old Testament.
- 0:51So it's always interesting. Now we have a new one to read
- 0:56today. And this is about the false
- 0:58prophet Hananiah. I think we could all learn from
- 1:02this because there are many false prophets.
- 1:05There's a lot of people who claim God told me this.
- 1:09And so this might give us some insight to is this from God or
- 1:14is this a false prophet that's saying things?
- 1:17So let's get started. In the 5th month of that same
- 1:21year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah, king of
- 1:30Judah, the prophet Hananiah, son of Azure, who was from Gibeon,
- 1:36said to me in the House of the Lord, in the presence of the
- 1:40priest and all the people. So he's really bold.
- 1:45This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says.
- 1:48I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon within two
- 1:53years. I will bring back to this place
- 1:56all the articles of the Lord's house that Nebuchadnezzar king
- 2:00of Babylon, removed from here and took to Babylon.
- 2:04I will also bring back to this place Jehoah Chin, son of Jehoah
- 2:10Kim king of Judah, and all the other exiles from Judah who went
- 2:16to Babylon, declares the declares the Lord.
- 2:19For I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon, completely
- 2:25opposite of what Jeremiah said. Then the prophet Jeremiah
- 2:29replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the
- 2:33people who were standing in the House of the Lord.
- 2:36He said, Amen. May the Lord do so.
- 2:41May the Lord fulfil the words you have prophesied by bringing
- 2:45the articles of the Lord's house and all exiles back to this
- 2:50place from Babylon. Nevertheless, listen to what I
- 2:55have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people
- 2:59from early times. The prophets who preceded you
- 3:03and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many
- 3:10countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophecies
- 3:16peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if
- 3:23his prediction comes true. So I guess we need to listen to
- 3:30what someone who you know hear the words at least to what they
- 3:34say. Not necessarily follow them, but
- 3:37listen to what they have to say and then be prepared for what
- 3:43may come. But we will only know afterwards
- 3:48if it was fulfilled or not. I mean, this is really like,
- 3:51there's no good way to really know.
- 3:54You have to kind of listen. And I guess you could pray about
- 3:56it and ask God about it. But quite honestly, I did see
- 4:00this recently when there was a man who prophesied that Jesus,
- 4:05the rapture would happen on September 23rd and 24th.
- 4:09And, and there were so many people who were posting public
- 4:16videos saying I got confirmation of the Lord of the same thing.
- 4:19I mean, just, there were numerous ones.
- 4:22And there was something in me that just, you know, I, I, I was
- 4:27hesitant in believing it, but I also didn't want to be prideful
- 4:31and think, well, I know. So I was like, OK, we just need
- 4:34to be prepared and then see what comes.
- 4:37And then when it came and went, then it obviously didn't happen.
- 4:42And I believe that I, I don't think someone would go out on
- 4:46the line and say those things because the outcome of what it's
- 4:54what happened would be so harsh. Like who would be bold enough or
- 4:58why would they do that? Or what benefit would they have?
- 5:01Because they were talking about getting prepared.
- 5:03They were talking about things that God said, but they were
- 5:08somehow it was either their own thoughts or it was something
- 5:12else that was influencing them to say that.
- 5:15And they didn't realize that. And hopefully their eyes are
- 5:19open now after it did not happen.
- 5:23And for all the people, unfortunately, there were some
- 5:26people who took these things to heart and they actually did
- 5:29drastic things with their lives. And that's something that we
- 5:32should never do is take drastic measures in preparation for
- 5:36anything. It's a preparation of our hearts
- 5:39and our relationship with God. That's the that's what we need
- 5:43to prepare. There's not like all these other
- 5:47things that are more important than that.
- 5:51The most important thing that we can do to prepare is to have our
- 5:55relationship with God in a good place where we are not in
- 5:59rebellion to Him and we are in communication with Him.
- 6:02We are hearing from Him, we are talking to Him, and there's
- 6:07communication back and forth like any it's that's just where
- 6:12we need to be. So anything that we hear about,
- 6:17the circumstances of what we hear about are not the important
- 6:20thing. It's about God because God can
- 6:21protect, God can provide, He can do all these things for us.
- 6:26And the only one that we need is God and he will make it known.
- 6:31And we just don't need to act harshly with anything, but just
- 6:36listen because you know, those words are in alignment with the
- 6:40Bible about preparation. It's just that there's some
- 6:44things that conflict and it would be hard.
- 6:47Like think about this back in the time where there were so
- 6:50many real prophets and and to know like, is this a real
- 6:54prophet or a false prophet? Just like Elijah, he was the
- 6:59only true prophet. And it seemed like at the time
- 7:03when Judah and Benjamin, I guess, were together and then
- 7:07the 10 tribes were, the northern ones were called Israel.
- 7:11They didn't have prophets that were speaking from the word of
- 7:14God because they had immersed with the Pagan cultures around
- 7:21them and they had these Ashira poles and all these other things
- 7:24that they were worshipping other gods.
- 7:27They were kind of mixing with it.
- 7:28So they weren't hearing the voice of God.
- 7:30They might have been hearing the voice of something else because
- 7:33we are in a spiritual battle. And that's what's concerning
- 7:37because the enemy of God can be very deceptive and very
- 7:41manipulative and make people think that, you know, Satan
- 7:47comes as the Angel of light. We have to remember that and
- 7:51test everything. And again, just just give it to
- 7:54God because ultimately God fights our battles.
- 7:58It's a spiritual battle. We don't have the strength of
- 8:01that. It's the Holy Spirit, it's God,
- 8:03it's the angels, the the good angels, the ones who are not in
- 8:06rebellion, who are the warriors of God.
- 8:10So that's that's really where we need to be is right with God.
- 8:17Anyway, going back to Scripture verse 10, then the prophet
- 8:20Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and
- 8:23broke it. He said before all the people.
- 8:26This is what the Lord says. In the same way I will break the
- 8:30yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon off off the neck of all
- 8:34the nations within two years. At this the prophet Jeremiah
- 8:39went on his way. After the prophet Prophet
- 8:43Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the prophet
- 8:47Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- 8:52Go and tell Hananiah. This is what the Lord says.
- 8:57You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a
- 9:04yoke of iron. This is what the Lord Almighty,
- 9:08the God of Israel says. I will put an iron yoke on the
- 9:13necks of all these nations to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar,
- 9:19king of Babylon, and they will serve him.
- 9:23I will even give him control over the wild animals.
- 9:28Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah.
- 9:31The Prophet, Listen, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you yet.
- 9:38You have persuaded this nation to trust in lies.
- 9:42Therefore this is what the Lord says.
- 9:45I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.
- 9:49This very year you are going to die because you have preached
- 9:56rebellion against the Lord. All I can say to that is, wow,
- 10:03in the 7th month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.
- 10:10God did not waste any time. So he's lying.
- 10:14And I, I don't know, you know, from this information that we're
- 10:19given, I don't know if Hananiah knew he was given information
- 10:23falsely or if he was deceived, but he was, he had to have been
- 10:30far from God in his relationship with God.
- 10:34There had to be something that was separating him from God.
- 10:38And maybe he didn't know about it, but he had to have known
- 10:43about it because God is just. And so this was a consequence of
- 10:47him lying about hearing from God.
- 10:51And he was in a sense, even though he is preaching safety
- 10:54and good things, he was preaching rebellion against the
- 10:57Lord because Jeremiah was speaking the truth.
- 11:00And so he was convincing these people to do the opposite of
- 11:04what God told Jeremiah to tell the people.
- 11:08So this gets really I, you know, who knows if we were present,
- 11:13who would we believe? Obviously the fruit of the
- 11:16Spirit helps us to discern between people like who should
- 11:20we believe? Who lives life according to
- 11:24God's suggestions, not suggestions, his commands.
- 11:28Who lives according to that? None of us are perfect.
- 11:32So not everyone fits perfectly to that, but you can see there's
- 11:37intentions with people and there's intentions where there's
- 11:40no, you know, concern at all about it.
- 11:43So anyway, I'll read through the questions and answers that are
- 11:46for this chapter 28, and then we'll conclude for today.
- 11:50So what was a why? Why was a yoke a symbol of
- 11:54oppression? Old Testament prophets often use
- 11:57this image to describe political oppression.
- 12:02A yoke was a wooden frame that was laid across the top of the
- 12:07necks of two animals or two persons as prisoners to bind
- 12:13them together. The idea is of one being subject
- 12:18to a greater and stronger power and not having freedom.
- 12:25And it also applies to like equally yoked.
- 12:28I mean, when two people are working together, I mean, that's
- 12:31what like animals that plowed together, you know, if one
- 12:36wasn't able to keep up with the other, it wouldn't work out
- 12:39well. And so that's another time when
- 12:42yoke is used, it doesn't necessarily relate to this Yoke
- 12:47here is exactly like what the study Bible said.
- 12:51But I just thought that was kind of interesting that it's used in
- 12:54a lot of several different ways. But All in all, think about this
- 12:58though, that the yoke actually represents someone in, you know,
- 13:03someone ultimately in control other than the people that are
- 13:07there. And so whose yoke do we have on
- 13:11our shoulders? Do we have the yoke of the evil
- 13:14one? Are we doing the evil 1's will?
- 13:17Or do we have the yoke of the Father, the Creator?
- 13:20Are we doing his will? Was Jeremiah being sarcastic?
- 13:25Probably. Some think Jeremiah genuinely
- 13:29wanted the temple and the nation restored, but it's more likely
- 13:32that this was a sarcastic edge to his reply when he was saying
- 13:37Amen back to Hananiah because he knew he had heard from God and
- 13:41he knew it was opposite. That was interesting how he
- 13:44replied. So why art?
- 13:47Was war so common that anyone could predict it?
- 13:51Not necessarily. Jeremiah was simply saying that
- 13:54prophets were typically sent to warn people, not comfort them.
- 13:59People could wait and see who was right.
- 14:02Hananiah's assurances of prosperity, while receiving rave
- 14:06reviews, merely restated conventional thinking.
- 14:11Jeremiah's message of doom, by contrast, opposed the tide of
- 14:16popular opinion. That's another thing where they
- 14:19say, you know, prophet is never accepted in his own town.
- 14:23When Jesus said that you know people who knew someone they
- 14:28didn't, they didn't think of them in that as a prophet.
- 14:33Did Jeremiah always wear the yoke?
- 14:35Jeremiah probably worn it since God first instructed him to put
- 14:39it on as an object lesson to people.
- 14:43However, he didn't necessarily have to wear it continually to
- 14:46make his point. Symbolic actions when performed
- 14:50at strategic moments in God's plan often leave an indelible
- 14:54impression on people. The yoke was an effective object
- 14:59lesson. This is interesting too, because
- 15:02we see that God does this with other prophets.
- 15:04I think like Ezekiel also has to do some strange things.
- 15:09And you know, everybody today likes to say, oh, I'm a prophet
- 15:13of the Lord. I heard this.
- 15:14But I wonder how many of those that claim to be the prophets of
- 15:17the Lord would be so humble to actually follow something like
- 15:23this, like put on a yoke and wear it or like the things that
- 15:27God told Ezekiel to do. Like would that prophet do that?
- 15:32Or does that prophet have this pride and this image of him or
- 15:37herself that is above that? Like they wouldn't do that.
- 15:42But here we see like Jeremiah was really humble.
- 15:44He at one point he took that linen belt, he bought it, he
- 15:48went and buried it. And, you know, these were all
- 15:50things that God was doing symbolically and putting the
- 15:55message in his mind where he's not going to forget it.
- 15:57He's going to remember going and buying that linen belt and then
- 16:00burying it and then it being worthless and useless.
- 16:03He'll remember all those things in comparison to the this
- 16:09nation, or I don't know what we call it, the Kingdom of Judah, I
- 16:11guess. How did Nebuchadnezzar tame wild
- 16:15animals? This overstatement was intended
- 16:18to illustrate the absolute dominion dominion Nebuchadnezzar
- 16:23would have over the nations. Why did Jeremiah bother with
- 16:28false prophets? Because they claimed to speak
- 16:30for God. False prophets had enormous
- 16:33potential influence. Jeremiah recognized that if they
- 16:36were left unchecked, they could push the entire nation further
- 16:41away from God. Furthermore, God is jealous
- 16:44about who speaks for Him. To falsely claim to be the
- 16:48Lord's spokesman is a grievous offence.
- 16:52Now, that is something that everyone should keep in mind.
- 16:56What happened to Hananiah, who was saying he was hearing from
- 16:59the Lord, but he really wasn't. God ended his life.
- 17:03He wasn't going to have any more of that.
- 17:05He was finished with that. That's the same thing that
- 17:08happened with the prophets who were against Ezekiel.
- 17:12They were all killed. I'm, I'm sorry, not Ezekiel,
- 17:15Elijah, they all ended up getting killed.
- 17:20They were prophesying by Baal and Elijah was prophesying by
- 17:27God. So God, God wins, He always
- 17:31wins. So it's never worth it for us to
- 17:34be in rebellion to what God's plans are and that we should
- 17:40with everything, submit to God, look for his direction and honor
- 17:45God because it's going to happen.
- 17:47God's will will happen.
