Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Because he wants to get to our heart.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: He wants to go straight and expose what's in there and he wants to bring hope and healing from it.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Sometimes God takes us on this long, windy road, and he teaches us things along the way and he shows us beauty and he just deepens our relationship with him.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So I don't know if you remember that story I told at the beginning where there were these steps and this long windy road next to the track by my house.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And I was thinking about how a lot of times God takes us up that longer path, right?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Like just it's easier because it's more gradual.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But sometimes we have to go up the steps and we have to do the hard work.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And so I was thinking about this concept about how sometimes he really does like take us through the shorter, more confrontational path.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And when he takes us up these steps, it often means that we are stronger and more ready to receive his correction.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And we've grown and we've developed and are mature and ready to hear his voice of truth, just speaking into these areas of our life that need work and need healing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: These steps sometimes hurt.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: They are the ones that burn, right?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: It's more of a direct shot and you're going more uphill.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: But they are given to us only when we are ready.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: His timing is perfect, right?
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You know what I noticed like after running those months and after building up like that 10 minutes at a time and 10 minutes of walking, 10 minutes of running.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but then I slowly got to a point where I could do a few miles, right?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And and I remember at that point, I didn't take the path anymore.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't take the long, long road necessarily.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: I just went straight up because I knew I could do it because I had gotten stronger.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I chose those steps.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: In the same way, we get stronger and more capable in our faith.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And God does at times ask us to go up those more steep steps.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Today I want to cover, you know, what happens when he confronts us, when he goes straight to our heart, when we he asks us to go up those steps, and what happens there, and when we have to go that quicker, more painful exposing route.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: In Hebrews 12, it says, the Lord disciplines those that he loves.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So discipline is hard, but it always comes from a place of love with him, and exposing comes from a place of him wanting to heal us.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So our big idea for the day is that God lovingly confronts what needs to be dealt with in us.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Today I want to visit the story of Jesus talking with the woman at the well, the woman in Samaria.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Going through Samaria was actually the most direct and fastest route.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: But Jews typically did not go that route because they would want to avoid Samaria and avoid the people of Samaria.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: But Jesus decided to go directly through Samaria because he had a divine appointment with this woman.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And he meets her at the well.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And we see this beautiful exchange where he talks about living water.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And I love this line.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It is one of my favorites in the Bible where Jesus says in John 4 10, if you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given it to you, and he would have given you living water.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: If she only knew the gift that was being presented here, she would have taken it.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And if only we know the gift that is being presented to us and handed to us, we would have taken it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But as Jesus continues to talk to her, I want you to notice that he goes straight to her heart.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: He goes straight to her trauma and the bad stuff that has been hidden in her past.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: The things that she would intentionally try to hide from others.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: There's no small talk here with Jesus.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: He goes into this conversation with her and he exposes, right, that her past, that she's had five husbands, and the man that she's living with is not her husband.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And she realized, like immediately realizes as soon as he said that, she starts to call him a prophet because she knows this man has to be from God.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: How does he know all this about me?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: How does he know all this personal information?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: It has to be from God.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, when I'm talking about God exposing and him exposing her and exposing you and the parts of your heart, I think when we hear this word expose, we have a lot of negative connotation with that word, right?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But the heart of Jesus is not to expose someone to wound them, but to expose in order to heal.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: The rest of this story is just a beautiful representation of the gospel, you know, where Jesus literally reveals himself to her and says, I am the Messiah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And this woman from Samaria becomes the first evangelist to her entire town.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: She tells all of them and they get saved.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and so here's what I don't want you to miss about this story.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: God confronted something, right, that was very hard in her life.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: God brought to the surface her real need for him.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: This was painful, no doubt, right?
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: She probably did not discuss this with anyone, right?
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: People probably knew her story and whispered about her and gossiped about her, but she was not out there openly telling others about this.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: But Jesus wanted to talk about it because he wants to get to our heart.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: He wants to go straight and expose what's in there, and he wants to bring hope and healing from it.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: His goal is not to expose the pain just so you're left there, wounded, hurting.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: No, he has a much bigger plan, a much more redemptive plan than that.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And he wants to see you whole again, he wants to see you resting in him again.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So sometimes he asks you to take that shorter, more difficult, more exposing, harder road.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: The more direct road to your heart.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Sometimes he exposes things that are very hard to look at, but in the process, he redeems and he does a healing work in you that only he can do.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Let me pray for us, friends.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus, it is hard to think about taking the shorter road that is exposing and shows things in us that we don't want to see.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: There's sin in there.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I know you've done this for me many times, and every time you do it, it is so painful.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: But Lord, I also know that you don't show me things or show us things unless you want to do something there.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: You want to heal, you want to work it out.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And Lord, thank you for the way that you are, the way that you think, and the way that you redeem.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Only you can do these things, God.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And I just pray that as you search our hearts, that you would show us things, that you would not overwhelm us, but that you would show us in your due time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Thank you that we're getting stronger and that we can handle these things that you're throwing at us and that we can see them and change and walk a different way and walk in the spirit.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I pray you can show us anything you want to show us this week, Lord, and that we would have eyes to see it and open hearts to listen to you.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: In your name.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Thanks for joining me today, friends.
