- 0:00Eventually, as we grow and mature, as our powers of
- 0:04reflection and self examination increase, we begin to seriously
- 0:09consider why it is we are alive, what it is we are here to do,
- 0:14and how we accomplish whatever our lives are intended to be.
- 0:20There are several aspects to this process of growth and
- 0:23development. When we are born into our human
- 0:26lives, we are immature physically, vitally, emotionally
- 0:31and mentally. In Book 1, Canto won.
- 0:35In his epic poem Savitri, a legend and a symbol, Sri
- 0:40Aurobindo hints at our situation.
- 0:43Quote. But the oblivion that succeeds
- 0:46the fall had blotted the crowded tablets of the past, and all
- 0:52that was destroyed must be rebuilt and old experience
- 0:57labored out once more. End Quote.
- 1:02We need to develop our physical, vital and mental framework and
- 1:06capacities, increase their power and perfect their action.
- 1:12This is an ongoing process in our lives.
- 1:16Much of our early focus is dedicated to this aspect of
- 1:19development, and we do not therefore usually focus our
- 1:23attention on why we are doing all this.
- 1:27If we become fully entangled in the external being and its
- 1:30activities, we may even fully lose sight of any deeper
- 1:35purpose. And we live our lives as virtual
- 1:38automatons, eating, sleeping, studying, working, enjoying
- 1:44ourselves. In many cases we stop the
- 1:48development of our powers and simply try to exist and enjoy
- 1:52ourselves. And in those cases we distract
- 1:56ourselves with intoxications of various sorts, whether they be
- 2:00drugs or alcohol, mindless entertainment, sex, etcetera.
- 2:06Others continue developing the instruments of mind, life, and
- 2:10body as a way of keeping some meaning in front of them.
- 2:14Eventually, neither dissipation nor engagement without deeper
- 2:19purpose suffices, and we then see people turning to the deeper
- 2:25questions of existence, the existential purpose that
- 2:29underlies everything we experience, everything we think,
- 2:34everything we do, everything we care about in our lives.
- 2:40Once we awaken to the existential questions, we begin
- 2:44our conscious spiritual quest, and at some point we become
- 2:48aware of our psychic being and get into touch with the
- 2:53spiritual reality, the universal consciousness that develops the
- 2:58universal manifestation for its own intention.
- 3:02Once that occurs, we can begin to sort out with intentionality
- 3:08the actions and focus that help us stay consciously connected to
- 3:11the spiritual truth of our lives and which help us determine how
- 3:16to express that in a manner that utilizes the capacities and ever
- 3:22expanding levels of perfection in action that occur when we act
- 3:27with understanding and intention.
- 3:30The mother notes quote. If we truly want to progress and
- 3:36acquire the capacity of knowing the truth of our being, that is
- 3:40to say, what we are truly created for, what we can call
- 3:45our mission upon earth, then we must, in a very regular and
- 3:50constant manner, reject from us or eliminate in US whatever
- 3:55contradicts the truth of our existence, whatever is opposed
- 4:00to it. In this way, little by little,
- 4:04all the parts, all the elements of our being can be organized
- 4:09into a homogeneous whole around our psychic center.
- 4:13This work of unification requires much time to be brought
- 4:18to some degree of perfection. Therefore, in order to
- 4:22accomplish it, we must arm ourselves with patience and
- 4:26endurance, with a determination to prolong our life as long as
- 4:31necessary for the success of our endeavour.
- 4:36As you pursue this labor of purification and unification,
- 4:40you must at the same time take great care to perfect the
- 4:44external and instrumental part of your being.
- 4:48When the higher truth manifests, it must find in you a mind that
- 4:52is supple and rich enough to be able to give the idea that seeks
- 4:57to express itself, a form of thought which preserves its
- 5:02force and clarity. This thought, again, when it
- 5:06seeks to clothe itself in words, must find in you a sufficient
- 5:12power of expression so that the words reveal the thought and do
- 5:17not deform it. And the formula in which you
- 5:21embody the truth should be manifested in all your feelings,
- 5:25all your acts of will, all your actions, in all the movements of
- 5:30your being. Finally, these movements
- 5:34themselves should, by constant effort, attain their highest
- 5:39perfection. End Quote.
