- 0:00How do you drive the fucking thing?
- 0:02This week on that car show, we're joined by guest and friend
- 0:05of the show Jorge Aquino from Tormenting Tarmac.
- 0:08He tells us why we're wrong about Corvettes and why the
- 0:12world needs just as many Corvettes as there are Porsche
- 0:149/11 variants. Lindsay talks to us about her
- 0:18track car and how a gremlin for five years gets solved within an
- 0:23hour. I lose all dignity when I talk
- 0:28about climbing out of a Lotus Elise.
- 0:31Luckily, no one was watching, but CCTV and Ryan gives us the
- 0:36full nuts and bolts story about what it's like to drive one of
- 0:40the most legendary Porsches of all time, the Carrera GT.
- 0:44We learn about the tires, we learn about the seats, we learn
- 0:47about the upholstery. But what's really important is
- 0:50we learn how you drive these things.
- 0:53All this and more on this week's Car Show.
- 0:56That car show Always Be Driving. Welcome to this weeks episode of
- 1:01that car show. The gang is all here as well as
- 1:04a special guest. But before I get to the special
- 1:07guest, just a quick overview of what the team are up to right
- 1:11now. Firstly, we'll be talking about
- 1:13Lindsay and not only has she found new love, but she's also
- 1:18rekindled old love. But we'll talk about that in a
- 1:20minute, Ryan. I'm curious.
- 1:23Ryan should be floating about 10 feet above his desk because the
- 1:26day he's had is probably one of the best car days of his whole
- 1:30life. He's on cloud 9 but.
- 1:33Before we get to that. It's all all Ryan.
- 1:36You might as well just pack up and go home, but we'll talk
- 1:38about that in a while. Well, we've got a special guest,
- 1:41Jorge Aquino from the podcast Tormenting Tarmac.
- 1:45Welcome. Hey, what's?
- 1:47Going on everybody, it's great to see you guys.
- 1:49Great to have you on the show. Good to see you, yeah.
- 1:52It's my first time on the on the new show, I think.
- 1:54Yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 1:57It is, but we got a text before last week's show that said,
- 2:01guys, if you're going to talk about Corvettes, I won't in
- 2:05Yeah. Then we talked about Corvettes.
- 2:07Then we got 10 more texts the next morning.
- 2:11The show. I think just to put in the
- 2:14balloon of context, we weren't saying we didn't like the
- 2:17Corvette. I think, and it was mainly me, I
- 2:20was saying I didn't understand why they were bringing out
- 2:23another super hot quick all-wheel drive when there's
- 2:28already an oil drive, there's already a super hot quick one.
- 2:31And Jorge is a bit of a subject matter expert on Corvettes.
- 2:33So welcome to the podcast and yeah, educate us why.
- 2:38Sure. Well, first of all, I wouldn't
- 2:39call myself a subject matter expert on Corvettes in any way,
- 2:41shape or form. I I on the record right now for
- 2:46anybody who listens to that car show.
- 2:48I appreciate Corvettes in the same way that I appreciate
- 2:51almost every sports car known to man.
- 2:54I have a little bit of a special relationship with Corvette right
- 2:58now because my best friend and one of my and my Co founder of
- 3:01tormenting tarmac run works at General Motors for GM
- 3:05performance and he's had actually a lot to do with the
- 3:09hot versions of the CA to the last couple of years.
- 3:11So it's more of like a special relationship, if you will.
- 3:14Like it's like my best friend worked on it.
- 3:16So like I get a little bit like, hey, yo, which what you say, go
- 3:21back up. You know it's kind of like that,
- 3:24but you know DP and you know, first of all, Lindsay and Ryan,
- 3:28you guys don't get off Scott free.
- 3:29Let me tell you right now. I listened to the entire episode
- 3:31last week. I heard I have everything y'all
- 3:33had to say. OK, I was I I I literally I sent
- 3:38Dan the the GIF of Optimus Prime saying I'll take you all on.
- 3:42That was the whole thing. So you guys don't get Scott free
- 3:45but can? We just put it back.
- 3:46We were talking about the ZR1X. Yes, we're going to talk.
- 3:49I'm going to. I'm just going to talk about
- 3:51ZR1X and whatnot, so. Let me say I'm just, I'm just
- 3:56trying to have a good time. I'm here for a good time, not a
- 4:00long time exactly. You 2 fight it out.
- 4:03Well, because like I want to answer Dan's question, Dan said.
- 4:07What's the point of Chevrolet bringing out another hot
- 4:10Corvette, right? None of you, and I know the
- 4:14three of you pretty gosh darn well at this point.
- 4:17None of you have ever questioned why Porsche brings out another
- 4:21hot 911. Tell me what I'm like.
- 4:24No, no, you're absolutely correct.
- 4:26Let me. Let me stop you there.
- 4:28Right. So Corvette.
- 4:30That's not true. There are there are there's a
- 4:33Corvette for people over the age of 70.
- 4:36There's a Corvette for the rental companies so you can hire
- 4:39one. There's.
- 4:41There's scan for example. Like me, like there are there
- 4:46are corvettes for people who want to do track days, but why
- 4:49is why is there a 01/01 X and what's the electric one?
- 4:58The E. Ray the E Ray, why do you need
- 5:00all three? Why can't you have one car that
- 5:02does everything? All right DP, why is there a
- 5:059/11 Turbo S and a 9/11 GT2 Rs you?
- 5:09Know that's easy, right? One's for real estate brokers
- 5:12and the others for track people. Right, so the you.
- 5:15Know problem solve I look. At it as Chevrolet sure right.
- 5:19I consider the E Ray the one for a 65 year old who has always
- 5:24trashed hybrids for the longest time.
- 5:26But they put one in a hot Corvette and they're like, ah,
- 5:30bloody. So this is what all-wheel drive
- 5:32feels like. And then doing it on the ZR1,
- 5:35it's like, I think it's for the hot boys with a lot of money.
- 5:40But then just to me, the ZR1X can go to a lot of different
- 5:44people, to be quite honest with you.
- 5:46I think it can go for those who are the ultimate Corvette
- 5:49enthusiast. Who this, because I think we'd
- 5:53be dumb to not say that this is the most insane Corvette ever
- 5:57made. They have.
- 5:58Let's breakdown. The specs real quick, sorry.
- 6:00Before we get any further sure, tell us what we don't know.
- 6:04My understanding is it's a 5 point.
- 6:05It's the 5.5 liter out of the ZO6 but now strapped with the
- 6:09twin turbos. It's the exact same engine as
- 6:12the ZR1 which is the 5.5 liter V8.
- 6:16I think it's I think red line is down from 8600 to like maybe
- 6:20closer to like very low like maybe 8K in total.
- 6:23So you don't explode, Yeah. Correct.
- 6:25Yeah, twin turbo with the E ray electric motors.
- 6:30So instead of making the 10 64, it's making a total of I believe
- 6:351250. Which is comical, Which is?
- 6:38Which is. Hilarious.
- 6:40Mind you I don't know what prices are because they haven't
- 6:43announced it yet, but considering that MSRP on a
- 6:45regular ZR1 yeah is like littles makes no difference.
- 6:49Let's call it with options 2 to 210 when you're not charging
- 6:53double on the adjusted market inflation as we have seen.
- 6:57Saw one for sale for $500,000 this evening.
- 6:59Sale exactly. By the way, 2 days ago I saw a
- 7:029/11 St. it was ridiculous but I saw a 9/11 St. going for 800
- 7:06like 3 days ago so like. Well, you know that's worth it,
- 7:08Jorge of. Course.
- 7:11Lindsay knows that a 9/11 GT3 Touring is on my 10 car garage
- 7:15list because we had this conversation two months ago.
- 7:17This is very true, right? But yeah, so that those are the
- 7:20specs, right? And if I don't know what they're
- 7:24going to sell it for, it would, if they sell this car at like
- 7:26300 grand, I think that they're cooking.
- 7:30I think that that's a good number to sell, which is a lot.
- 7:34I know it's a lot, Lindsay. It's crazy to go ahead and think
- 7:37a Corvette. Sorry, was my expression that
- 7:39loud? A $300,000 Mustang would be OK
- 7:44though, right Lindsay? Listen.
- 7:47The dark horse, right? Maybe.
- 7:49Well, that was, you know, that was the announced price.
- 7:52When they gave you, I'm sorry, the GTD the.
- 7:54GTD they said it was 300, but even the most dedicated.
- 7:59Must have, which it's not. Were were that was giving
- 8:02everybody pause and then I think by the time they were like
- 8:06before they were delivered, the price increased.
- 8:08It's I mean that's a big number, right?
- 8:13Like that's a big number. Period.
- 8:15I mean, I mean no besmirchment when I say this because I love a
- 8:19Mustang just as much as anybody else does.
- 8:22This is how we know it's about to get good to.
- 8:23Compare them. I need like a vocabulary button
- 8:27to press. You want to hear a word like
- 8:29that? To compare any Mustang.
- 8:32To compare any Mustang, regardless of whether or not
- 8:34Multimatic is building it or not.
- 8:36To compare that to the hottest Corvette on sale is blasphemous.
- 8:40And Miss Jess, you should know better.
- 8:42You know what I'm saying? Like it's it's, it's it's rough
- 8:45to it's it's, I think it's crazy to try and compare the two.
- 8:48I mean on the, on the, on the well.
- 8:52OK, but name. Name 3500 lbs.
- 8:56Name two more direct competitors, though.
- 8:59I've never considered the Mustang direct competitor to the
- 9:01Corvette. I consider the 9/11 or a Cayman
- 9:04more of a direct competitor to the Corvette than I ever would a
- 9:06Mustang. Mustang Camaro to me is more of
- 9:09has always been more the competitors respectfully.
- 9:11Yeah, Now Firebird, I think GTD is a little bit different.
- 9:16You're absolutely right. I think GTD is somewhat
- 9:19different. Now these are the same people
- 9:20that built the the the GT 10 years ago, the four GTS.
- 9:23It's multi matic, right? But I still, you know, the
- 9:27Corvette to me has been especially with C8 in the last
- 9:30five years, it's been moved so far past beyond what it's ever
- 9:34been with the mid, with the mid engine configuration that I
- 9:38think GM is looking at this exactly.
- 9:41It helps them be able to go ahead and pull off this crazy
- 9:45ass idea of we're going to quadruple the horsepower from
- 9:49where it is as a base C8Z51-A base Z850Z8Z51 is 495
- 9:56horsepower. Guys like that's already a fast
- 9:58car that's doing zero to 60 in under 3 seconds and it's running
- 10:02a very high 11 quarter mile for I don't know, you buy a 2LT and
- 10:07you're looking at 70 grand and you're cooking.
- 10:09We're good, right? We are so far beyond that it's
- 10:12not even funny. Corvette has always been that
- 10:16type of car that's always punched so far above its weight
- 10:20because it's their bread and butter.
- 10:22It's their, you know, it's, it's their Halo, it is their Halo
- 10:27product. And I think that they look at it
- 10:29as a way of, you know, if we can make, if we can take all the
- 10:33cool crazy parts and put it all together and just sell it, there
- 10:37will be a buyer. I think that's the way that they
- 10:40look. Who is that buyer?
- 10:42Well, OK. So we were we discussed that
- 10:44earlier. I think the one of the buyers
- 10:47will be the most up, most crazy Corvette enthusiast who has a
- 10:52ton of cash, who's got every single Corvette imaginable and
- 10:55every single cool Corvette imaginable.
- 10:57So it's going to be that person that has AC7ZR1 that with A7
- 11:00speed manual or AC6ZR1 and AC6ZO6 with like the crazy cool
- 11:07packages. They'll probably have a 63 split
- 11:11window in the collection too. You know a 454 big block 68C3,
- 11:16you know it'll be that person that also I don't listen, I'm
- 11:22not this guy, but I can imagine someone with the Mustang GTD
- 11:26also buying AZR 1X like because they have that cash flow.
- 11:30So I think. There's have they said how many
- 11:33have they said how many they're going to make?
- 11:36They haven't. And that's where it scares me,
- 11:38Lindsay. That's that's where I'm at.
- 11:40That's where I get afraid. This.
- 11:42Could be up at night. What's?
- 11:43No, no. What I mean by?
- 11:45That say more about what are you what what are these?
- 11:47Fears that you're having. What am I afraid?
- 11:49I'll tell you. And you know, if my buddy Ron
- 11:52listens to this, I hope he doesn't take offense to it.
- 11:54But I think Corvette has a bad habit of over making the cars.
- 12:02And what I mean by that is they make too many of them that it
- 12:05loses the luster. I think that if you're going to
- 12:08make a ZR1 ZZR one XI think you should make it limited.
- 12:12I really do. You can cause.
- 12:14And even with the ZR1, I think they should make ZR ones
- 12:17relatively limited. You look at C7 ZR ones, for
- 12:21example, especially the ones with the seven speed manual.
- 12:24Those are going for stupid money.
- 12:26Stupid money. I'm talking like mid 300
- 12:29thousands right now. They can buy one.
- 12:31Yeah, they're going nuts. And because they, I think so
- 12:35many, so little people ordered that car.
- 12:38There's not a lot of C7 ZR ones with a manual.
- 12:40There's tons with an 8 speed automatic.
- 12:42Interesting their whole value. But it's the seven manuals that
- 12:46are going for crazy money. And why I say it scares me is I
- 12:50want people to be able to enjoy this car, but I also don't want
- 12:56it to be that in seven or eight years time, doubt that this will
- 12:59happen. But just bear with me for one
- 13:01second that all of a sudden we have a 12150 horsepower V8
- 13:05Corvette out on the streets. That someone with relatively
- 13:08good credit and all of a sudden, oh, because it's come down so
- 13:12down in value, I can get into AZR 1X.
- 13:15You have no right of getting into that car because you are an
- 13:20ignoramus. Like what's up?
- 13:21You know what I mean? I I I want the ZR1X to be far
- 13:26away. From you.
- 13:28You presuppose, though, that income has a correlation with
- 13:32driving ability. I mean, I'm not lying.
- 13:37Well, maybe a little bit, but but you're 1200 horse, is that
- 13:43what 1200 horsepower? 50.
- 13:45Well, like, that is insane power.
- 13:47Yeah, I. Don't know what they were
- 13:48thinking, like I genuinely. I'm a fan of this.
- 13:51I'm a fan of this, but I'll tell you right now I have no idea
- 13:54what in the actual thought they were thinking.
- 13:56Guys, that is a great, yeah, Bugatti power, right?
- 14:00That's, you know, that's Pagani power, right?
- 14:03Like that's that's crazy power. Like, is that even fun?
- 14:07I don't know. I've never driven a car with
- 14:081200 horsepower. I would assume so.
- 14:13I think you have to like I heard here, I look at it this way
- 14:16because I heard you guys talk about it last week and you guys
- 14:18were saying like where do you use this?
- 14:19I think that if someone were to because there will be people who
- 14:22track their ZR ones for sure. There's zero sixes and ZR1 XS.
- 14:26I think you have to go ahead and choose the right track.
- 14:29Like are you going to take this to Laguna?
- 14:30No, I don't think so. Like you'd have to be nuts to
- 14:32want to take this to Laguna. You got to take this out to like
- 14:34Coda. You got to go ahead and take
- 14:36this out to somewhere where you got a ton of space.
- 14:39Like, I don't know, Lindsay. Like how do you think this will
- 14:41do a big Willow once it's done? Like the straights would be
- 14:45anus. The straights, it would be
- 14:47insane, but I feel like you might like you would be so quick
- 14:51on them. You I think it would probably be
- 14:55really fun at big Willow because it is so open and you have, you
- 14:58know, the big sweeping turn before the front straight.
- 15:01Like you could definitely open it up but Willow is not
- 15:06forgiving if you go off and it is like let there's no walls.
- 15:11Yeah, how are the brakes on this thing?
- 15:13Well, I mean, over the last 15 years, I think Chevy, Chevy,
- 15:17Chevy Corvettes brakes, whether it's the carbon ceramics or not,
- 15:20the carbon ceramics are some of the best brakes in sports cars.
- 15:24And I'm not just saying that. So the brakes to me.
- 15:26Are the bigger concern, I think the bigger concern would be
- 15:30like, is the person driving it like do they have the skills do
- 15:35it that you know that's going to be the biggest determinate
- 15:38factor. I just think, but on a positive
- 15:41end, I look at it as what a time to be alive genuinely, because
- 15:46now we we've entered an era. Amen.
- 15:49You know, I mean, we've entered this.
- 15:50We're in a really cool spot where, you know, I think the
- 15:53four of us have always had this conversation of like cars or
- 15:56there is too much going on. We like to analog feel like
- 16:00Lindsay, you drive an E36 DP, you had the GR for a while.
- 16:04Ryan, you've got the GT4, like those are like some great
- 16:07driver's car. I have a great Kia Sorento,
- 16:10which is obviously the best driving SUV on the market today
- 16:14and whatnot. But we have no questions.
- 16:18Hands down. Obviously I had to go and put
- 16:19that in there. Guys, come on now.
- 16:22We live in this era where, yeah, there's a lot of nannies and the
- 16:24computers are, are they're all over the place, right?
- 16:27But at the same time, we're living in an era where we get
- 16:32Lamborghini Rueltoes with 1000 horsepower, we're getting
- 16:35Corvette, two different Corvettes with 1000 horsepower,
- 16:38plus we are getting a Mustang that's running the Nerberg ring.
- 16:43Oh by the way, ZR1X on the Nerberg ring would absolutely be
- 16:46a flyer, but we have Mustangs. On.
- 16:48The Nerberg ring which are running under 7 minutes.
- 16:51If that's not big energy I don't know what is.
- 16:54We have GT threes that like like you can't catch ADT 3 on a back
- 17:01Rd. like it's just impossible. So I have to look at it as we
- 17:06can complain all we want about what these cars have in the
- 17:11computers and stuff like that, but we also have to realize that
- 17:14engineering has gone so far above and beyond what we would
- 17:18could have ever imagined 20 years ago, let alone 30 or even
- 17:2240. Like it's like it is a cool time
- 17:25to be a car enthusiast, a really cool time.
- 17:29We've talked about this, right? Like just even in our lifetimes,
- 17:32like how much things have changed.
- 17:34I mean, the, the idea of a 12150 horsepower anything, much less a
- 17:38Corvette is just mind blowing. You, you're the outlier here in
- 17:42this group, having been born in 89 Jorge.
- 17:45But, you know, three of us grew up with some real crap.
- 17:49I hate. Deuces, we should be celebrating
- 17:51this. I think that's what you're
- 17:52getting at, right? We should be celebrating this.
- 17:54We should, you know, if this were anything else but a
- 17:56Corvette, we'd think this was like, you know, God's gift to,
- 17:58to us, right? Yeah, I mean, we mentioned the
- 18:00fact. That damn Corvette name gets in
- 18:02the way, yeah. But, you know, you say that, but
- 18:04you know, Lindsay was out of Lamont and like, Corvettes been
- 18:07running Lamont for like 15 years, you know?
- 18:10Yeah, Cadillac, it's been, you know, it's, well, that's the one
- 18:13thing that I always have to go ahead and point out to people
- 18:15Like it's like, oh, but it's Chevy.
- 18:16It's like, well, Chevy's been ready to sing for like 100 years
- 18:19now, guys. You know that's not to you,
- 18:21that's to anybody else. That's not new.
- 18:23They've been going to Le Mans. That's not new.
- 18:26They've been going to Le Mans for 30 plus years.
- 18:29They've won Le Mans on so many countless occasions.
- 18:32It's so funny that I'll give you a perfect example.
- 18:35I remember having a conversation with some friends about this
- 18:38when Cadillac they were trying to get in last year and F1 told
- 18:41them no. The first time there was they
- 18:44they had the audacity to say, oh, you don't have enough of a
- 18:47history to really warrant a spot of the 11th car on the grid.
- 18:51And it's like you're saying that the Cadillac who's under the
- 18:54general performance or excuse me, General Motors brand, who
- 18:59basically is main person has been Chevrolet, which has the
- 19:04most iconic American sports car in the history of our lifetime.
- 19:07And you're telling them they don't have the racing history to
- 19:10go and be allowed into F1. That's crazy to me.
- 19:14So when people I get, I get the stigma that comes along with the
- 19:19Corvette. Then the same way that there's a
- 19:21stigma with the Mustang, there's a stigma with BMWs and you can
- 19:24keep going. There's stigmas with Teslas for
- 19:27good reason. What?
- 19:27Was the word Jorge besmirchment? Besmirchment.
- 19:30I'll besmirch Tesla. Yeah.
- 19:32Yeah, but the besmirchment is that the baby boomers are the
- 19:36ones that should only be associated with Corvettes.
- 19:39But Corvettes have been making cool like Chevy has been making
- 19:42cool Corvettes for a long, long, long, long time, especially the
- 19:47last 15 years. Like, you can't, you can't hate
- 19:51them for what they're up to, No. So do we think there's enough of
- 19:54an audience like if we go with your like theory of it's, you
- 20:00know, the true Corvette enthusiasts?
- 20:03Do we think there's enough of an audience of like, dedicated
- 20:06Corvette enthusiasts with that kind of money to support
- 20:12something like this? I think there is.
- 20:18I don't think, you know, Chevrolet is such an enormous
- 20:21brand. You knew, you know that they go
- 20:24ahead and research this, right? They're not just going to go
- 20:26ahead and make a Corvette like they we would hope, right?
- 20:30I mean, they've been around for 100 years.
- 20:32You would hope that they've done some studying, right?
- 20:34No, but I think that there will be I, I do think, and you know,
- 20:38the way I look at it, ZR1 and Dan, Dan and I had this
- 20:40conversation last week was I look at ZR1X as a trim up on
- 20:45ZR1. It's AZR one plus.
- 20:47So it's not like a separate model.
- 20:49It's it I consider ZR1X the way you would almost look at is an
- 20:53Rs over AGT 3. That's kind of how I look at it
- 20:58and. I really how dare you speak the
- 21:00name of Porsche in the same Oh. My God, that's going to piss off
- 21:05a few people. No, I'm just kidding.
- 21:07No, but I think that I think there will be, I mean, there's a
- 21:13lot of people. I mean, we live in a lifetime
- 21:16where there's a lot of millionaires out there, guys,
- 21:18let alone billionaires. So I don't, I don't.
- 21:21There's been a. Consolidation.
- 21:22We're not. I think we can all agree.
- 21:25We ain't we ain't those peeps, but you know that there is.
- 21:28I think that there are going to be people who will want to buy
- 21:31this car, but I do believe that if they were to make ever a
- 21:34Corvette, any of the chapter limited ZR1X would be that one
- 21:39to make a little bit limited make more regular ZR ones.
- 21:41Although I think that the regular ZR1 to me is more of the
- 21:46car that I would go for as opposed to to the X or honestly,
- 21:50I kind of want to call it Zora, but I you know, that's not the
- 21:53game that that's not the name that they decided to give it and
- 21:55that's on them. But yeah, I think there will be
- 22:01and you know that there's going to be dealerships marking them
- 22:03up like crazy, like we're seeing regular ZR ones get, you know,
- 22:08jacked up right now, so. Who was that that sent that link
- 22:11earlier? Of the four of us, right?
- 22:12The one for 500 grand. So that was a dealership in
- 22:16Florida. Eddie X is the one that first
- 22:18shared it. But yeah, it's a dealership in
- 22:20Florida, man. Those Floridian dealerships,
- 22:22man, they sure know how to mark up like crazy, man.
- 22:25That's not the. First time.
- 22:27It really messes. With their brains in the head.
- 22:29Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it probably makes some
- 22:31type in wrong numbers wrong to be quite honest.
- 22:35But yeah, if there was ever a car that they'd want to limit, I
- 22:38would say it's this one. But there will be buyers.
- 22:42I mean, so I, I looked it up, man, there's a like at least 15
- 22:47to 20 different 9/11 models that you can go ahead and buy.
- 22:50So that means that there's a 9/11 for everybody, right?
- 22:53Which means that you know Porsche's out here charging 300
- 22:57grand MSRP wise for a three Rs, they're charging 250 for a 9/11
- 23:01Turbo S. They're charging like littles.
- 23:05Makes no difference. 400 MSRP for MST.
- 23:07If you can get one, there's a lot.
- 23:10Yeah, I'm just going to say technologically speaking, like,
- 23:12you know, this is this 01 X is probably every bit as good a a
- 23:16well engineered product as anything Porsche is doing.
- 23:18I get that right. Like and and constructed and
- 23:20everything else right. It's, it's, it's, you know, it
- 23:24it. We do have a double standard,
- 23:25admittedly. Sure, you guys know how much of
- 23:28a Porsche fan I am, you guys. Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm with you.
- 23:31Like if you gave me a 911 and a Corvette, I'm going to go ahead
- 23:34and go with the 9/11. But I also know that Corvettes,
- 23:39they're cool, man. They they, they did like they,
- 23:42they make some cool cars. And they're making a damn good
- 23:45case. I'm trying I, I, I listen the
- 23:49biggest. If you're listening, you should
- 23:51be sponsoring Tormenting Telmac. Jorge.
- 24:10How hot is it in Phoenix tonight?
- 24:14Actually it was a nice mild summer day guys I was looking at
- 24:18a high earlier I know I tried to say that was with the street was
- 24:22much of a straight face as I. Could 111 today guys.
- 24:25Oh, so it was 104 here on the West side.
- 24:28So if it was, if it's hotter in Denver than it was in 15 days,
- 24:31today I'll take. No, no, no, I'm joking.
- 24:32No, no, no, no. I just, yeah, no, we, I think we
- 24:37were a balmy 86 or something, but.
- 24:39OK, but it's, you know, with humidity, I can go ahead and get
- 24:42a little nutty, but I look at it in a good way.
- 24:44In the next couple weeks, I get a chance to go ahead and stop by
- 24:47Lai Might I may or may not be seeing Sir Daniel Pilling.
- 24:51I'm very excited. Lindsay, if you're in OCI would
- 24:55tell you to come and literally come and meet my family and meet
- 24:58up with me and hang out with us and go to Peterson if you want
- 25:00to. Just throwing that out, you
- 25:02know, and I know that I have limited time, so I'm going to go
- 25:05ahead and stop. Yeah, for sure.
- 25:08I'm going to stop ranting. I want to first of all, thank
- 25:11the three of you for letting me come and crash the party for for
- 25:1420 minutes. And you guys know how much I
- 25:16love you and I love what you're doing.
- 25:19And you guys are my my, not only my friends, but you guys are
- 25:22legends or heroes. Ryan, you're one of the best
- 25:25storytellers I've ever met in my entire life.
- 25:27Daniel, you are and a kind a gentleman and a scholar.
- 25:32And I try to be like. Apparently a knight.
- 25:35Yes, very much so. He's absolutely been knighted by
- 25:38me. I'm not royal too, but I'll be
- 25:41happy to knight you and then Lindsay you, you're an absolute
- 25:43Angel. I love talking and with the
- 25:46three of you. You guys are amazing.
- 25:47Send my love to Troy. Congratulations on the
- 25:49engagement. It's I love to see it and just
- 25:52keep doing you guys this thing. I'm I'm loving everything you
- 25:54guys are doing. So I appreciate the time.
- 25:56OK. Thanks for joining us all.
- 25:58Hey, and thank you for standing up for the the little American
- 26:02guy in jorts and New Balance. But.
- 26:05Listen, if I don't do it, we're going to have a plenty of other.
- 26:08People, we're going. To want to do it that are not
- 26:10the right messengers. You know what I'm saying?
- 26:12That's all. That's all I'm trying to say.
- 26:14We will all be that little man someday, So or woman if it's.
- 26:19Not us then who you know that's. Always.
- 26:22Exactly the things though. But to everybody listening,
- 26:26thank you all for listening to me rant about CA Corvette, ZR1
- 26:29XS. If you've got the money and you
- 26:31really are interested in one fucking me, buy one and drive
- 26:34it. Don't flip it, drive it.
- 26:36Yeah, tell us about it. Let Ryan drive it for freaking.
- 26:39For the magazine, for the website, Yeah.
- 26:42Tormenting tarmac at tormenting tarmac on Instagram give give
- 26:46the guy a follow it's a good follow I.
- 26:48Appreciate that. No, I, I I try to be.
- 26:50Check out the podcast. Thanks.
- 26:52Thanks. Thanks for everything, guys.
- 26:53Thanks for being a part of the 150 journey.
- 26:55You know, I appreciate it very much.
- 26:56You guys are the best, OK? Thanks buddy.
- 26:58Thank you. All right.
- 26:59Cheers, guys. See you soon all.
- 27:01Right, bye. And normally love the guy.
- 27:04No resume. He is such a top guy.
- 27:07We're lucky to have him as a friend.
- 27:09So I got I have to tease him. Do you think Tori's going to be
- 27:12upset about Troy? I I thought for a second about
- 27:16like, right, let's cut that again and then.
- 27:19No, it's more fun this way. The sentiment is there The
- 27:22sentiment. Brad Pitt.
- 27:24Brad Pitt was in Troy. That's where he was going maybe.
- 27:27Right. I mean, I can't argue with it.
- 27:31Lindsay my whole life I've not once been called an Angel.
- 27:35So you know that there is currency.
- 27:38Remedy right there a. Long, long time right I.
- 27:40Mean. I will take three of us.
- 27:44I want to save Ryan's story to the end because it's probably
- 27:49his highlight of the year so, well, I don't know.
- 27:52We're going to meet our week. Sorry.
- 27:54Second highlight of the year. Lindsay, you have been
- 27:57reacquainting yourself with old loves and getting something
- 28:02ready. So what have you been up to?
- 28:04So my E36M3 track car has come back to life thanks to Troy and.
- 28:12Troy Racing. Right Troy Racing, run by Tori
- 28:16Alonzo. So the car was parked in 2019,
- 28:20and at the time that it was parked, it had a decades long
- 28:25electrical gremlin or gremlin that people were slowly starting
- 28:29to suspect was electrical. Which if anybody has ever tried
- 28:32to chase one of those down, you know what a thankless nightmare
- 28:36that is. That was the era of
- 28:39biodegradable wiring harnesses, too.
- 28:41Let's just for the record, right?
- 28:44Yeah, yeah, yeah. It would stumble on the street
- 28:49and like, I would joke, you know, just trying to find the
- 28:52humor in the situation. It would be absolute perfection
- 28:55on the track. I would pull off the track to
- 28:58like go back to my spot in the paddock and it would stumble as
- 29:01I was literally pulling off the track.
- 29:02And I'm like, listen, I understand that your happy place
- 29:05is on the track, but I have to be able to get from the track
- 29:09entrance and exit to our parking spot.
- 29:12And like, you know, so just, and then got to the point where it
- 29:15was like stumbling more and more and then just different
- 29:21circumstances. The car ended up being parked in
- 29:222019 and I have dragged it behind me like a questionable
- 29:28anchor for the last few years, wondering what I was doing with
- 29:32this giant silver paperweight. And Tori and I started talking
- 29:36about it and I was describing the issue and he said, well,
- 29:39what if we just put a new battery in it and like maybe
- 29:42change out the spark plugs? And I don't think I've ever seen
- 29:47him or Cheshire Cat grin when he came upstairs with the old spark
- 29:50plugs. We're going to play a little one
- 29:54of these things. It's not like the other.
- 29:56And he started setting them down 1 by 1 and he got to the 6th one
- 29:59which had 0 electrodes left. Wow, we saw a picture of this,
- 30:03in fact. Yeah, follow Insty.
- 30:05Insty Well Lindsay on Instagram because there's a photo of this
- 30:09thing and it is gone. No election.
- 30:12Does that mean? You're going to sack your
- 30:14original mechanic. Consider him sacked.
- 30:18And you'll fire. This this ship has a new
- 30:21captain. I'm, I'm afraid we're.
- 30:23Co captains or whatever. Yeah.
- 30:26Yeah. I mean, this guy's invaluable,
- 30:29right? We should all have a a Tony, a
- 30:31Tory Troy. Right.
- 30:33In our. Lives get yourself a Troy.
- 30:35Yeah, well, one of my one of my friends in Seattle was laughing
- 30:41because she said, yeah, he posted like, all right, let's
- 30:44see, you know, let's start investigating the car.
- 30:46And she goes like an hour later, he posted.
- 30:48It was running. It was turned around.
- 30:49He's an unsolved mystery solved in record.
- 30:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:55Not much of A show, but. It's such a good looking thing
- 30:59that car and I always running the record saying the four door
- 31:03looks better than the 2 door. Well, and the the ironic part of
- 31:07the fact that it's a 4 door is that when I was looking for one,
- 31:10I said it has to be the sedan version which they only made for
- 31:13two years because I want to be able to take people.
- 31:16And the car now is a 4 door 2 seater because the backseat got
- 31:22ripped out. It's got 1/2 cage in it like.
- 31:25Yeah, that's like a GR Corolla. What was the?
- 31:28Oh, it's the Marito. W Marito Edition.
- 31:32Yes. Right, yes, a homemade marito.
- 31:35Yeah, but it's, you know, and it's funny because in the
- 31:40interim, you know, from 2019 to now, there was another, there
- 31:44was a stock one that came up and it was literally the exact
- 31:46configuration of mine. It was a 4 door silver, you
- 31:50know, integrated like stock spoiler that came with it from
- 31:53the factory and all this. And I saw that one and I'm like,
- 31:56well, maybe I just need that. So I went and test drove it and
- 32:00I hadn't driven mine in probably four years at that point.
- 32:03And I'm like, well, this will be a good test to see like, do I
- 32:06even really like these anymore? And Paul Kramer likes to
- 32:10describe when someone, when you get a car that's new to you and
- 32:14you start going like, oh, I'm going to update this and I'm
- 32:16going to update this and I'm going to make this change.
- 32:18He calls it nesting and I realized part way through the
- 32:211st test drive that mental in my head I was nesting already with
- 32:24this car so I'm like all right I still like them.
- 32:27So luckily I hung on to mine and it is now registered on the
- 32:33street as well so. Nice.
- 32:36It has been doing a lot of the school runs and delighting my
- 32:39family. I love it, I love it.
- 32:41Yeah. I mean, it's like I think.
- 32:43Story as old as time, though, right like you have a car
- 32:46something you know well, you don't know something goes wrong
- 32:48with it and you just set it aside and it becomes part of the
- 32:50landscape and you know and it's it's I'm so glad that you
- 32:55revived it because it's these are so good they're.
- 32:58So good. I mean, and honestly it's like
- 33:01and and it has never run better. Truly like and it was the most
- 33:05basic fix. No, my dad did remind me the
- 33:09engine was replaced in that car because it ended up with oil
- 33:12starvation during a track day. And the engine.
- 33:14Oh really? So it's not OK?
- 33:17It's not the stock engine and obviously we don't know what the
- 33:19mileage was on the engine like the replacement engine.
- 33:23So the spark plugs that were in it came with the replacement
- 33:25engine, but. Still Oh, OK, OK.
- 33:28Was that a thing in those cars, the oil starvation?
- 33:30I mean, it's a pretty common thing, especially with like, you
- 33:32know, increasing technologies and.
- 33:34Tracking them like ideally you would put in like a baffled oil
- 33:39pan so that it, you know, holds it doesn't like all end up on
- 33:42one side, which is what happened with my car.
- 33:43Sure, sure. But that just means you were
- 33:46moving. Well, I wasn't the one driving
- 33:48it actually at that point, but yes, I can.
- 33:51I can a test that the car was not slow and it was being driven
- 33:56spiritedly at the time. So yeah.
- 33:58But yeah, I love it so much. And because it's never run
- 34:02better, like I have full confidence in it and it's like
- 34:06I'm just getting to enjoy it and get reacquainted.
- 34:08And you know my daughter, because it was a track car and
- 34:11it had no back seats and she was little.
- 34:13Like she rode in it for like 1/2 a block one time her entire life
- 34:18up until it was parked. So we're now getting to enjoy it
- 34:22together too. And like her smile when I pick
- 34:25her up at school in it. And there've been some really
- 34:28cute conversations like that we've overheard as the kids walk
- 34:32out of school. Like there was this one really
- 34:34adorable little boy. He and his friend were walking
- 34:36out and they saw it because it's got race seats and it's got
- 34:39harnesses and it's got a key. And so like if you look in the
- 34:42window, you're like, something's different here.
- 34:44And that car show podcast sticker.
- 34:48And that car show podcast sticker which adds 25
- 34:50horsepower, I'm told. I don't know according.
- 34:53To. I don't know.
- 34:54That's what Troy says. Who knows?
- 34:55But he seems to know what he's doing now.
- 34:58It's a revolving right? I know.
- 35:01And so this one, little kids or little kid, I mean, they're
- 35:05junior high, said to his friend. Like, I think it's probably a
- 35:08drift car. Yeah, I think so.
- 35:10And then he happened to walk like they happened to be walking
- 35:13by right as I started it. And then he said with great
- 35:17authority to his friend. Oh, yeah, obviously you can tell
- 35:19by how it sounds. It's a drift car.
- 35:21Yeah, yeah. What's?
- 35:22Up and then did he say and it's got new spark plugs?
- 35:25Yeah. You hear that?
- 35:27That is distinctly the sound of brand new spark plugs.
- 35:30Right. Are are Bosch platinum plugs
- 35:33still the move? Like I haven't replaced spark
- 35:35plugs in a minute. Well, so that was how, that's
- 35:39how we know that the plugs that were replaced, they were the
- 35:42original plugs on the replacement engine because they
- 35:45said made in Germany and they haven't used those in a long
- 35:48time. Oh, OK, where are they made now?
- 35:52I mean, not Germany. Not Germany.
- 35:54I'm. Going to go with not Germany.
- 35:58I mean, I would guess I feel like the default safe answer.
- 36:00Is strange. Oh yeah.
- 36:02But opened it up so it could be anywhere.
- 36:04Not Germany, yeah. So I tried to drive a car this
- 36:09weekend, try to test drive the car and test drive another car.
- 36:13I've always wanted to try the Lotus Elise and.
- 36:18Because it's wonderful. Because it appears to be
- 36:21wonderful. So I went to Beverly Hills
- 36:24Lotus. They'd organized for the car to
- 36:26be available for me to have a look at and drive.
- 36:28That's a place. It is a place, yeah, and, and
- 36:32very nice people. OK, they have a Undercroft car
- 36:35park. So I I met the sales guy in the
- 36:38Undercroft car park. What does that mean for us
- 36:39Americans? An underground.
- 36:41An underground car. Park OK?
- 36:42Yeah, OK. So it was there in this
- 36:44underground car park and they didn't have the keys, but the
- 36:48car was open. So he said to me, you know, go
- 36:52look at it, sit in there, all that sort of good stuff, and
- 36:54I'll be back with the keys. So anyway, I opened the door.
- 36:58The first thing I didn't realize is how big that seal is.
- 37:02So you've got a seal because it's a, you know, a tub.
- 37:05So you've got this seal and then you've got the seat.
- 37:09The car still has the hard top on it.
- 37:13So anyway, I managed to lower my little bottom onto the seal and
- 37:18push myself into the car. The sales guy is still not
- 37:21around and I'm like, I don't fit in this.
- 37:25The steering wheel was minute. So before he came back, I
- 37:29thought, I'll get out. Getting out of that car was it
- 37:33was an act of contortionism. It was a an act of losing my
- 37:37dignity. I literally had to crawl out
- 37:39onto the floor and. Lotus of Beverly Hills, I'd love
- 37:44to see that security video. That's you got it handy.
- 37:47Thank goodness. For not having an audience,
- 37:50right? Right.
- 37:51I'm so glad he'd gone to get the keys and when he came back I
- 37:54went, yeah, I don't fit in it. Lindsay, have you ever driven in
- 37:57the lease? I haven't, no.
- 38:00I think I would. Love to they are bucket list
- 38:03cars, but I could barely fit in when I was, you know, 30 and fit
- 38:07right. There's no way I'd be getting in
- 38:09one now much, you know, like Dan and which is a shame because
- 38:12it's just amazing. They're amazing.
- 38:15You know, there's manual steering.
- 38:17There's just I mean, it is, you know, this, this, this term like
- 38:21a go Kart, right, which has been overused for for years and years
- 38:24and years. I mean, there's nothing else
- 38:26that is that that fits that description better than.
- 38:29It's like a. Like one of the early, you know,
- 38:31distilled. Small like.
- 38:32Go karty like it was one of the only things like it at the time
- 38:37when. It came out, yeah.
- 38:38Yeah, I was so disappointed. I I didn't fit.
- 38:41I really wanted to fit. I will say I think if the top
- 38:44was if the top were off, I think you could fit.
- 38:47Yeah, but also like that steering.
- 38:49Wheel is about 12 inches across the.
- 38:50Steering wheel is minute, the pedals are so close to each
- 38:54other and the steep kind of digged in so they're.
- 38:56Like extruded aluminum, though, it's so like supercar in a way,
- 39:00you know, and but yeah, small. So so I went to test drive an M4
- 39:05convertible after that, which I did fit in perfectly.
- 39:09It's interesting because I don't know whether we've just become
- 39:13desensitized to speed, but it didn't feel that quick.
- 39:20And it, for the record, has 485 horsepower or something.
- 39:25I think it's around. It was a competition, so I think
- 39:27it's 495 maybe. OK, OK.
- 39:30So in theory, on paper, it's a quick, quick car and I was in
- 39:34sport, man. I put my foot down, but it just
- 39:36didn't like it. It was quick, but it wasn't as
- 39:40quick as I thought it was going to be, which was a real
- 39:43surprise. Do you feel like, did you feel
- 39:45like there was any hesitation in the response or do you feel like
- 39:48it's because cars have become so insulated that you don't have
- 39:53the sensation of it was responding the way that you'd
- 39:56expect, but you were insulated from it?
- 39:59It could be both, it could be both.
- 40:01I mean, you know, it's, it didn't have an instant pick up.
- 40:04It kind of took a second. But you know, comfortable car
- 40:09it, it was the other thing that I thought about was you can tell
- 40:13the lineage. So I used to have an E46 and you
- 40:16could tell you were sitting in a product that had evolved from
- 40:19the E46. Would you rather have an E46?
- 40:22Yeah, absolutely. Hands down if it was reliable
- 40:25and the the and. Now you know.
- 40:27The back falls out of them, doesn't it?
- 40:29So if that had all been sorted right.
- 40:32I'd want post back falling out of and being addressed then yes.
- 40:39Yes, yeah. So on the completely, yeah, I
- 40:42would rather yeah, can. We pose this question to the
- 40:45audience. Sorry, Lindsey, go ahead.
- 40:47That's. No, I mean, I had an E46 two for
- 40:49a time and like I still think about it.
- 40:51I mean there was just there was something like so good about
- 40:54that, I think. And Dan, I don't know what your
- 40:57sense is about this, but like they were such a leap forward
- 41:00from the E36 too, which obviously I love the E36, but it
- 41:04was so different. You know, like the E46 was the
- 41:06first car that I experienced with like a steering wheel that
- 41:09had real, you know, diameter to it, like to the actual steering
- 41:12wheel. And it was just such a level up
- 41:14in terms of like the appointments in the interior.
- 41:17And it was like it felt incredibly luxurious and it was
- 41:22a performance car. And I think they've, I think
- 41:25they've stood the test of time in a lot of ways too.
- 41:27Yeah, yeah. Pose the question in the
- 41:31audience. What, what?
- 41:31What should Dan buy? You know, so at least it's out
- 41:35of the question. Sounds like underwhelmed by a
- 41:37new M4 comp. I'm trying to test drive
- 41:41something this weekend, yeah. But may we guess?
- 41:45Well, Mercedes-Benz of let me just say that Mercedes-Benz of
- 41:50Beverly Hills are not as good as getting information.
- 41:54I'm still waiting for a spec sheet on the car a day later,
- 41:57whereas I texted a friend of ours and he sent me the spec
- 42:00sheet of that car within 5 minutes.
- 42:03So that might help you like a. Friend of ours.
- 42:06Yeah. Can you guess?
- 42:09Well, I'm going to say GT63 because I had a revelation or a
- 42:15vision of you in this thing, and I think it might be perfect.
- 42:19But it's not convertible. Has to be convertible.
- 42:24Is that because that now that you're in LA you want something
- 42:26convertible? Yeah, I'm not going to do many
- 42:29miles. When I do do miles I want the
- 42:31top down and. Right, you want the full
- 42:33experience. That makes sense.
- 42:35Yeah. And it's a Mercedes.
- 42:38No, I didn't say it was a Mercedes and I said that a
- 42:40friend of ours got the spec sheet, so that should.
- 42:42Help. So then it's a Porsche.
- 42:43Maybe it's. A spider, right?
- 42:48I can't afford a spider. They've gone up in value so
- 42:50much. Just get yourself a GT4.
- 42:54Right. And then?
- 42:57Oh yes, I approve and. We'll see whether they let me
- 43:04test drive it after they've not given me any specs on it.
- 43:07And that is the better car for your situation than a Spyder or
- 43:11GT4. We're going to be scraping the
- 43:12shit out of the front lip everywhere you go.
- 43:14Get the GTS 4 point O. That is a wonderful car.
- 43:18Wonderful. Car the only downside?
- 43:19Is it PDK? So like I would have loved a
- 43:24manual but right? But everything else is right.
- 43:28But you're in LA, you're in LA, you're allowed.
- 43:31That's true. I'm just going to get the spec
- 43:33on it. So it's guards red.
- 43:34Oh, that's such a which is kind of a good Porsche color, isn't
- 43:39it? It is.
- 43:40Great Porsche color steering wheel.
- 43:44It's got the adaptive 18 way seats, ventilated seats, I'm not
- 43:49sure. About them, it's.
- 43:50A navigation including Porsche Connect, because that was a 2300
- 43:55option, like it's, yeah. My GT4 doesn't have it, so it
- 44:00must be NAV. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:02And and it will allow you to connect your phone, which was
- 44:05also a separate option without the NAV if I recall.
- 44:07But yeah. Interesting.
- 44:09Yeah. So I.
- 44:09Mean, I kind of like the idea of Dan getting a GT4 and then we
- 44:14can change the name of the show to the GT 4 show.
- 44:19GD4 and friends. Yeah, well, I fully support the
- 44:24GTS, you know, 40, I I think it's a wonderful car.
- 44:28And this is a Boxster. Yes, it's a Boxster.
- 44:30Would you trade in? Like would I get rid of my SQ5
- 44:34which I'd have to do based on that price?
- 44:36Like would you sacrifice? I think probably would, yeah.
- 44:40I think you'd love that car. I think you'd have it for a long
- 44:43time and and I think you'd have such amazing adventures and
- 44:47you'd meet the most interesting people in that car.
- 44:49I think that's you get all the credit, you know, good vibes.
- 44:53I I just, I think that's a great car.
- 44:54I think it's a great choice for you and it's so obvious but
- 44:58didn't think about it. Well, and the nice thing is if
- 45:00you trade in the SQ 5, then the only option is to drive the GTS,
- 45:06which is really like that's I mean, that's why we're here,
- 45:09right? It's like always be driving
- 45:12forces you to enjoy your fun car.
- 45:15Yeah, you could do that in Lai think you could get away with
- 45:17that, sure. Yeah, yeah, when I watch this
- 45:20space. We'll see if they come.
- 45:21Back to make it for you. With any details so.
- 45:24I'd love it in LA. And a red Porsche.
- 45:27Just like living your best life. Fully embracing the whole thing.
- 45:33Yeah. So Speaking of Porsches, someone
- 45:37should have biggest smile on their face.
- 45:40In the next. Month Because, Ryan, you had an
- 45:45incident a few weeks ago where you tried to drive a Diablo and
- 45:48it broke before you got behind the wheel.
- 45:50Yeah, the same owner then trusted you behind the wheel of
- 45:55something even more expensive. So what have you been up to?
- 45:57Yeah, so if you listen to the show for a while, you know that
- 46:00I write for Autoblog as well. And I've, I've, I had proposed
- 46:02this series of articles around like the poster cars of my youth
- 46:06and sort of beyond. And so I got to drive a Ferrari
- 46:09355, which I actually got to drive again today.
- 46:12If you read the article, got to drive it again today, but
- 46:14without the, the, the race seats and with the stock seats out if
- 46:17it just fine. Still weird driving position,
- 46:19but it was fine. The Diablo, thank God, I was not
- 46:22behind the wheel, but the Diablo broke some sort of of linkage in
- 46:25very dramatic fashion. And, and, and we couldn't write
- 46:28about that. So the same owner, Brian, bless
- 46:33his heart, but has been so kind to me.
- 46:35What do you want to drive next, right?
- 46:37And there was an F40 which caught my eye, but that's having
- 46:40some work done to it. So we next went to the career GT
- 46:45and and you, you both know that queer GT is a dream car, right?
- 46:49It is a, there's so much mythology around this thing,
- 46:52right? You know, the clutch, right?
- 46:55That, that it'll kill you that it's, it's you know, and, and so
- 46:59I wanted to go into driving this thing and deciding if, if these
- 47:01things, if there's any truth to these rumors, right?
- 47:04And you may know, but very recently there was a recall with
- 47:09a Courage ET and they replaced. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:14So yeah, it was, it was of course, lots of people I think
- 47:16kept driving them. But right.
- 47:18But basically they updated some suspension bits.
- 47:21And then the big thing was they fitted the car with a tire that
- 47:25it is deserved for the last 20 years, which is a Cup 2 that's
- 47:28built for the car, right. So it's an end spec, you know,
- 47:31Porsche spec, which by the way, I saw a presentation from
- 47:35Michelin on cup twos and how each model is is individually
- 47:41sort of built for different manufacturers and things.
- 47:43So like a cup 2 for like a again, a GT63 with all the
- 47:47weight up front is a very different, a differently
- 47:49constructed tire than something for like a GT3 or career GT.
- 47:52But anyway, Ryan, you. Guys on Carrera GT and then you
- 47:57started talking about tires. Come on.
- 47:58Oh. Sorry.
- 47:59OK, OK. Well, I just want to say.
- 48:00So this. Car had had yeah, this car had
- 48:04the the the the recall service done and that included these new
- 48:08Cup tires. And as we all know, if you're
- 48:10listening to this podcast, you've read the articles about
- 48:12how the Carrera GT very recently circled the Nurburgring 16
- 48:18seconds. I think it was quicker than the
- 48:21than the same car did back in 05 S 20 years ago.
- 48:24And and that's nothing but tigers basically, right.
- 48:27So this is a car that I think was had this sort of, you know,
- 48:31people thought this car was dangerous.
- 48:32Obviously there's, you know, very famously Paul Walker and
- 48:35all this. But yeah, you know, the
- 48:37consensus now seems to be that this tire or this car was was
- 48:40was way ahead of the tire, right?
- 48:42And and now this car has a tire that it it deserves.
- 48:45So so yes, to get to the point, I got to drive one of my all
- 48:49time dream cars, a Carrera GT today and talk about a car that
- 48:53probably cost more than my house, right?
- 48:55And that, that, you know, you go on with some nerves, right?
- 48:59And, and again, this is a car that has a clutch that you, I, I
- 49:03think maybe uniquely, you do not depress the accelerator as you
- 49:07are engaging the clutch, right? Once you're moving, then you
- 49:11drive it like a normal, normal, normal car, normal, normal horse
- 49:14ship. But, but it's that initial
- 49:16thing, the clutch is $40,000. And that's just for the part,
- 49:19right? So.
- 49:22So you make sure I had my coffee this morning.
- 49:25You said in the garden you're about to start driving, Yes.
- 49:29So you're cutting. Clutch.
- 49:31Yes. You build up some Revs.
- 49:34No you don't. Do not build up any Revs.
- 49:36This is why they don't let me drive them come on August
- 49:38through the process of driving a CGT.
- 49:40Sure. So you get in and it's got the
- 49:42old Porsche buckets for starters, right?
- 49:45So not what you get in a 918 or, you know, GT4GT3 or whatever,
- 49:48right? So they are they're different
- 49:51and they're very comfortable and they're, I felt like they were
- 49:54quite accommodating versus the current ones like, you know, I
- 49:57didn't get the pinch in my my hips like, you know, maybe I
- 50:00would in the the newer ones. How do you?
- 50:01Drive the fucking thing, OK? So you get in and you it's just.
- 50:07But you need to wear this too. Come on, I.
- 50:09Will I will all right make it? On Spotify to see Dan's head
- 50:12explode. Yes.
- 50:14Hey, we've got time, right? We're only 49 minutes in.
- 50:17This is this is a spiritual experience.
- 50:18You've got to bear with me here. This is you know, I have seen
- 50:20the mountain and it was good, right?
- 50:23And of course it sounds amazing on cold start because it's AV
- 50:2810. I think it's 605 horsepower or
- 50:31something. I should probably check my facts
- 50:32and figures, but you know, it just it sounds unlike anything
- 50:36else right, But yet it's very Porsche like you look around it
- 50:40is everything's bespoke right. The the the radio is this little
- 50:43thing that's about 3 inches across right versus a versus a a
- 50:47standard. The thing drives amazing.
- 50:50That's what I'm hitting it. That's really good, but it's the
- 50:53whole experience. It's.
- 50:54Kind of quick the show right now.
- 50:56It's a special thing. It's not just about driving,
- 50:59it's about sitting it and taking it all in.
- 51:01And how do you start it? How do you?
- 51:02You start it like a regular car, but it's.
- 51:05What does it smell like? It smells like rich people, you
- 51:09know? It smells like dance aggravation
- 51:14and it doesn't. Smell like.
- 51:17Guys, it was so good. It was so good, but it felt like
- 51:20a Porsche. It felt like a Porsche.
- 51:22What's interesting is the flywheel must be about, you
- 51:25know, the size of a nickel because the power is immediate,
- 51:29right? The the Revs fall and and and
- 51:31you know, build like like nothing.
- 51:33It's one of those cars, and I think really only super cars
- 51:36manage this, where this thing has a red line of 8500 and it's
- 51:40just getting going when you have to shift right.
- 51:42So many cars drop off right when you have a red line.
- 51:45This this thing was an F1 engine or if I'm not mistaken, right,
- 51:48this thing was designed for Lamont.
- 51:49This thing probably had an original red line of 12,000 or
- 51:53something, right? And so they've dialed it back,
- 51:55right? And it just wanted to keep
- 51:57going. But it's that immediacy, right?
- 52:00It's just it was it was epic. It was absolutely epic.
- 52:03It was absolutely epic. I highly recommend you know the
- 52:06whole, if you have the means, make it happen because it is so
- 52:09good. Now.
- 52:09Is it a million and a half dollar driving experience,
- 52:12right? I mean, I don't know.
- 52:14We have to tune into Autoblog to find out.
- 52:18Yeah. You don't.
- 52:21So I want to understand the process in case I ever drive
- 52:25one, right? Yeah.
- 52:26So you sit there, you've turned the engine on.
- 52:28Yes. You engage the clutch.
- 52:32Yes, foot on the clutch, foot on the brake, as you would any
- 52:34other manual. Car, then you put it into gear.
- 52:38Put it into gear. Yep.
- 52:40And then you slowly just lift off the clutch without touching
- 52:43the accelerator. Yeah, first you take off the
- 52:45parking brake, which is a traditional handbrake, but it's
- 52:48on the left, right? Yes, you just slowly lift off
- 52:52the clutch and then until you know you, you don't want to put,
- 52:56you don't want to touch the accelerator until you have
- 52:58completely come off the clutch. Yeah, easier said than done
- 53:02because it is their bottom hinged, which I guess I didn't
- 53:06know. So you know, I think I thought
- 53:08bottom hinge pedals for Porsche went out with the last of the
- 53:11air cools, right. Then three, these are are bottom
- 53:14hinged. They're like again, they're
- 53:15these aluminum pedals and the clutch is is sprung very heavily
- 53:20and it's not linear. So it's a, it's a little tricky,
- 53:23right? And you know, but you do it,
- 53:25right? Because you have no choice,
- 53:27right? And there any risk of stalling?
- 53:29Like does the engine tell you it's going to stall?
- 53:32Thank God I didn't stall, right. You know, it's got so much
- 53:35power, which which which which helps, but no, it's just, I
- 53:37think it might even be a like an automated thing.
- 53:40Yeah. Where it's just, you know,
- 53:42that's, you know, it's, it's built into the programming that
- 53:45that's how it gets moving. You know, it's, it's it's weird.
- 53:49And, you know, I caught myself a couple times trying to, you
- 53:52know, ease in with. Yeah, I was going to say, did
- 53:54you have to thank God I did. Your instincts of like normal
- 53:57manual driving. Absolutely.
- 53:59And Brian, who owned the thing, you know, I caught him at least
- 54:02once, right? Doing that, right?
- 54:03Because it's just your natural you, you know, that's what
- 54:06you're taught to do. And is it a bad thing to like,
- 54:08ride the clutch? Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:11I mean, I did. I sure as hell didn't.
- 54:12Because screwed, Oh man, you know, But once you're moving,
- 54:16it's an absolutely normal car. It really is, you know, it's
- 54:21just, it's really, really good. It doesn't really drive like any
- 54:23other Porsche I've driven. It definitely feels like a GT
- 54:27car or something, but it moves around in a way.
- 54:28It's a little twitchy, even with the the recall stuff, the
- 54:31suspension bits and the tires. And as Brian, the owner says, I
- 54:35never push it to its limits. I'll push my GT3, you know, Rs
- 54:38to its limits. I'll push my 3:55 to its limits
- 54:41on the track. There's something there's like a
- 54:43little bit left that you know, it's, you know, the Angel share
- 54:47or whatever. You just don't touch, right?
- 54:48You just, you kind of just let that be you just let that be.
- 54:51And, and, and it demands respects it respect, it commands
- 54:55respect, right? It you feel that there's
- 54:56something more here that's beyond you as a driver, even if
- 55:00you're a good driver. And yeah, I mean, it, it I was
- 55:03laughing out loud, though, I mean, and that that's only
- 55:05happened a handful of times. And granted, one time it was in
- 55:07a Miata, but, you know, that's a rare, a rare thing in a car.
- 55:12No. Yeah, it was, it was, it was
- 55:15awesome, but it was also nerve wracking.
- 55:18And it also, despite its excellence, made me appreciate
- 55:21something like the GT4 at a 10th or 15th or whatever of the
- 55:25price, right? You know, it is, it is, you
- 55:27know, you get in, you just everything works as it should.
- 55:31You know it, the clutch is not $40,000, right?
- 55:35So it is, it is an excellent, excellent thing.
- 55:37You should absolutely drive one given the experience.
- 55:39If I had the money, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
- 55:42But it is a, it's an expensive car and it is a car that, again,
- 55:46Brian, the owner would say he doesn't take it on all the time
- 55:48because it's kind of a pain in the ass, right?
- 55:50Like, you know, you don't want to misstep, you don't want to
- 55:53burn the clutch. You know, you've got to be very
- 55:55careful. It's a very low right and shout
- 55:57out to our buddy Tom Moran, chair of the Colorado Grand, who
- 56:00I think owned a couple back in the day, may or may not be
- 56:02shopping for one now. But he said the first time he at
- 56:0578 miles an hour or whatever it is in the, the, the wing rose
- 56:09up. It really freaked him out right.
- 56:13Like it, it, it scared him. I mean, it's because it's a
- 56:15massive thing that all of a sudden just appears, you know,
- 56:18in the in the rear view. So epic.
- 56:21You know, I, I think almost certainly the most expensive car
- 56:24I've ever driven. And, you know, and, and it, but
- 56:28it, it, it lived up to that. It felt special.
- 56:31It felt great. It, it was amazing.
- 56:33And you know, I yeah, go drive with guys and let's compare. 10
- 56:38out of 10. 10 out of 10, you know, but as I alluded to
- 56:43before, I was able to then get back into his 355 with, with the
- 56:48factory seats and, you know, and that really kind of made sense
- 56:51to me too, in a way that it hadn't before in a very, very
- 56:53different car, but also a special.
- 56:56And then I got to drive across town to lunch and have have
- 56:59lunch with our buddy Dan Mcinnis and got to drive his 912 and
- 57:04that's another car. Have either of you driven a 912?
- 57:07Not yet. No, but it sounds like you did
- 57:10it in the wrong order. I know, I know, I know.
- 57:13Well, even Dan himself referred to the 912 as a palate cleanser.
- 57:17Yeah. Exactly.
- 57:19A salty cracker, if you will. Yeah.
- 57:23There's a little bite of sorbet and.
- 57:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 57:28I have one more question about the courage.
- 57:29Yeah, please. So once you get moving, then
- 57:34when you're shifting gears like after you're driving, are you
- 57:38still not? Do you still stay off the
- 57:40accelerator? And no, no, once, yeah, once you
- 57:44are, are, are moving, you're, you're good to drive it like
- 57:47anything else. And of course it has this
- 57:48amazing shifter that's up in the dashboard like an old alpha
- 57:51spider or something. It's this balsa wood or
- 57:53whatever, you know, shifter that's delicate.
- 57:56And, and you know, it's, it's like you're shifting with like a
- 57:59lollipop or something. It's just, it's the amazing.
- 58:02Sensation 917 isn't it? Yes, yes.
- 58:07And you wonder why more cars don't have that sort of position
- 58:10for the shifter and maybe it's packaging or what have you.
- 58:13And Speaking of the Corvette, to bring this full circle, you
- 58:16realize how much the, the, the the C8 apes from from the queer
- 58:21GT, right with that, you know, the, the, the bit with a call it
- 58:25the buttress or whatever that comes down the middle with it,
- 58:27with the buttons and things. It's very similar.
- 58:28It's all I could think about. But yeah, it's, it's, I don't
- 58:34know. Am I getting this GT4?
- 58:36Yeah. Am I getting this GT 4 though?
- 58:38And say, oh man, this just it doesn't feel like it used to,
- 58:41but it's a special car for special occasions.
- 58:44It's not an everyday car, right? I absolutely get why, you know
- 58:48why they're as popular as they aren't as as expensive as they
- 58:50are. This one had 9000 miles, which I
- 58:53think kind of puts it in the middle for mileage, right?
- 58:56Because so many of them just didn't get driven.
- 58:57But here's the other thing. Shocked they built 12173 of
- 59:00these things. That's nothing.
- 59:02They built more F 40s than they did career GTS which blew my
- 59:06mind. Well, is there any data on how
- 59:09many are have survived to this point?
- 59:12Yeah, I don't, I, I don't know, I don't know, but you know, a
- 59:15lot, I think at this point, unless, unless it's really gone,
- 59:18it will be rebuilt, right. So, and speaking with Brian, he
- 59:22did come across a couple of those, right.
- 59:24And in the, in the, in the search process for a, for a car.
- 59:27So they're out there as well, but they're amazing.
- 59:30I mean, they're special. You know, it's, it's rare that
- 59:32you get in a car that really does feel special, right?
- 59:35This car doesn't share parts with, you know, Cayman or 911.
- 59:39It just doesn't right. It's it's none of that thing
- 59:43there. You know, you take the target
- 59:44top pieces off, you put them in the in the in the in the in the
- 59:48front right, and they just fit perfectly.
- 59:50And then where a normal car would have the the top latch in
- 59:55the HGT has little plastic sliders to cover up, you know,
- 59:58the unsightliness that is that are the latches right?
- 1:00:02You know, I mean, you know, beat that Lotus.
- 1:00:05The eyes that are latches. Yeah, so, so sorry for the ramp,
- 1:00:09but that this was an epic, an epic day of of of driving.
- 1:00:12We just. Wanted the details.
- 1:00:14Yeah, we wanted the details. So did you guys see, you know, I
- 1:00:18think it was like the last two to three years Porsche took a
- 1:00:22career GT and like stripped it down and redid it and it's the
- 1:00:26Speedster Blue 1 and it was up for auction a few years ago.
- 1:00:30And then it was actually, I got to see it again.
- 1:00:32So I got to see it a couple years ago at one of the Haggerty
- 1:00:36locations. And then it was actually at Air
- 1:00:38Water this year, so I got to see it again.
- 1:00:40And I know what you mean, Ryan, because you walk up to it and
- 1:00:43it's like there's almost a like an aura.
- 1:00:47You know, there's a real presence to those cars and
- 1:00:49especially that one because it was such a unique example.
- 1:00:52And it was a color they never came in like I they may have
- 1:00:55even developed the color just for this project.
- 1:00:58But yeah, I mean, it's like there's almost a vibration just
- 1:01:01looking at it. So I can't imagine driving it
- 1:01:04would be, you know, just a whole another level.
- 1:01:08Yeah, it's, it is, it is everything you think it's going
- 1:01:12to be and more, you know, and that's, and that's it.
- 1:01:16But it's not something to be scared of.
- 1:01:18You follow that simple instruction of of being careful
- 1:01:20with a clutch, right? Yeah.
- 1:01:22And after that, it's a normal car.
- 1:01:24It drives like a Porsche, right? Just a really, really powerful,
- 1:01:27excellent, amazing sounding Porsche so.
- 1:01:30Well, we look forward to reading about it when you publish that
- 1:01:32article. Absolutely.
- 1:01:34Thank you. Yeah, thanks for indulging me.
- 1:01:36That was a this was a good one. This was a fun one.
- 1:01:38This was a fun day. Yeah, I kind of feel like it's
- 1:01:41my turn next. Lindsay's had a Gunther Works,
- 1:01:43Ryan's had his Carrera GT. Yeah, what's?
- 1:01:46Next, and I've got a Lotus Elise that don't fit in so right.
- 1:01:49It's got to be something soon. Well, I'm thinking, I'm thinking
- 1:01:53box your. Yeah, maybe, maybe we will say
- 1:01:58We will say it. Would it would anything else for
- 1:02:03you folks? Anything going on this weekend?
- 1:02:06You know, shout out to Avance. They're doing a little get
- 1:02:08together at Spinelli's market in Denver.
- 1:02:10If you hear this, check their website.
- 1:02:13Those are always fun. That's fuel fed I think has a
- 1:02:18cars and caffeine this weekend as well in Boulder.
- 1:02:20So do them both if you can. Nice.
- 1:02:23How about you? Dan Lindsay, you up too much?
- 1:02:26Nothing yet. OK, more more rides in the M3.
- 1:02:31Yeah, I want to drive this thing.
- 1:02:33I really, really do because I never got to drive one back in
- 1:02:36the day. You know, they were just out of
- 1:02:37my right league. Well, I mean, this one, it
- 1:02:41definitely would feel different because like all the suspension
- 1:02:44and the bushings and everything has been changed.
- 1:02:47But yeah, anytime you're in town, let me know.
- 1:02:51Yeah, there. We go make that happen.
- 1:02:53Another reason to go visit. Exactly.
- 1:02:58Well, I think. Dan, what about you?
- 1:02:59Sorry, I didn't. I don't want to pass her.
- 1:03:01What are you doing this weekend? Oh, if Beverly Hills Mercedes
- 1:03:04calls me back, I'm test driving a GTS.
- 1:03:07If they don't, I'm not well. Fingers crossed they call you
- 1:03:13back and you get to go test drive it and then we can hear
- 1:03:15all about it next week. Yes, yes, it will fit.
- 1:03:17It will be awesome. Otherwise it'll be a a complaint
- 1:03:21about a dealer next week. We might do a a complaints show.
- 1:03:27I think we could probably fill a couple of.
- 1:03:29We got lots of stories about dealers and.
- 1:03:32But just to a close circle on that, it was our good friend
- 1:03:35John Doster, who literally within two minutes was able to
- 1:03:38give me the full history on the car, the full spec.
- 1:03:41And I, I don't know whether I'm breaking him into jail for
- 1:03:44telling you that, but, you know, these guys are really good at
- 1:03:47customer service. Yeah.
- 1:03:48They are they. Are Yep, John's the best for?
- 1:03:51Sure, absolutely. Right.
- 1:03:53I think that's a show. Who's going to give us the
- 1:03:55phrase? The phrase that pays as they
- 1:03:58say. Not it.
- 1:03:59Yeah, Linds, you're good at it. All right, my turn.
- 1:04:03As we say, thanks for joining us and always be driving.
- 1:04:07A Carrera GT, Yeah, if you can, yeah.
- 1:04:13With great tires, yeah. Everyone, my dreams all night
- 1:04:16tonight. Until next week, it's that car
- 1:04:20show.
