- 0:02Tell me, Mr. Franklin, have you ever?
- 0:04Known anyone with Alzheimer's? No.
- 0:08What if you could end all that suffering with a single?
- 0:11Pill. Give me till Monday.
- 0:12Morning 48 hours. I'll give you a result.
- 0:14That'll skyrocket your stock price.
- 0:16In the most Advanced Research facility in the world.
- 0:20Wow. Beneath it's glassy surface, a
- 0:24world of gliding. Monsters.
- 0:26A team of. Specialists is working against.
- 0:28The clock. Did someone order the fish?
- 0:32Or an experiment to benefit. Mankind.
- 0:35Sharks never show any loss of brain.
- 0:36Activity as they age with this close to the reactivation of
- 0:40human brain cell. But before they can save
- 0:44millions of lives. Tell me I didn't.
- 0:47See that they recognize that girl that's.
- 0:49Impossible. Sharks do not swim back if they
- 0:51can't. They'll have to find a way to
- 0:54save their. Own.
- 1:12Just what the hell did? You do to those sharks.
- 1:14Did you feel something? Jim and I used gene therapist to
- 1:19increase their brain mass. What is that as a side?
- 1:22Effect The Sharks got smarter. Somebody.
- 1:29Please tell me. What that is?
- 1:42Go. Go.
- 2:16Welcome to the Hamster Film Club.
- 2:20My name is Joe Ford, and if I sound very confused, it's
- 2:24because we're doing this on the hoof after our very first live
- 2:28watch through of a film for the Hamster Patreon page.
- 2:32I'm here with four fabulous people and we just sat and
- 2:36watched the film. Thanks to one of us, and that is
- 2:40Miss Lucy McCall. Hello.
- 2:41Lucy, hello. What film do we watch tonight?
- 2:45We watch deep blue sea. Explain yourself.
- 2:50I like films with sharks where people get eaten and explosions
- 2:54and stuff. It's I find it relaxing because
- 2:58I don't have to think about it. I've also got here with me
- 3:01lovely Luke Sims Jenkins. Hello, Luke.
- 3:04Hello Exploding. Sharks.
- 3:06Do you like exploding sharks? Yeah, I do.
- 3:10It's it's very satisfying despite they're not being they.
- 3:14You shouldn't have been able to explode that much, but you know,
- 3:17you want to see the blood. It was like the Exxon spill at
- 3:20the end. And I have also got here the
- 3:23gorgeous Doctor Simon Exton. Hello, Simon.
- 3:26Hello. Do you like exploding sharks?
- 3:28Do you like shark movies? I like sharks, I like
- 3:31explosions. What's not to love?
- 3:34I was expecting a bit more Terence Rattigan to be honest,
- 3:36but. I was hoping more people would
- 3:40get eaten, but most of the cast was eaten so I can't be can't
- 3:43complain too much. And last but not least, finally
- 3:47face to face with the magnificent Mr. Jeff Richardson.
- 3:52Hello, Jeff. Hello, Joe Ford.
- 3:56Hello. It's happy to be here.
- 3:58I'm happy to be here. God damn.
- 3:59It ask you a question, all right, because when you heard we
- 4:02were watching Deep Blue Sea tonight, your immediate reaction
- 4:05on the group chat was oh, Jesus Christ or something of that ilk.
- 4:10I'm terrible with action movies. Like I'll watch him but my
- 4:14physics brain checks in and he's useless during an action movie.
- 4:20You. Know.
- 4:22The whole time I'm like, that hatch wouldn't close, they would
- 4:24have died of hypothermia by now. That shark would have got them
- 4:29seconds ago. But it was so much fun,
- 4:33especially to hang out with people and watch like these
- 4:36gorgeous visuals have the sound down and the caption so I can
- 4:42see all the terrible dialogue. It was fantastic.
- 4:46Somehow it looks worse written on the screen, doesn't it, than
- 4:48when you hear it? Oh boy boy, it gave me a chance
- 4:51to say some of the lies while we're watching it as well.
- 4:53It's worth noting as well Paul Jeff got his timings wrong so
- 4:56joined us half an hour into the movie.
- 4:59Don't trust Google AI for your time zone conversions.
- 5:04We'll see what I'm going to get. I'm going to do a quick round
- 5:07Robin of what everybody thought of this masterpiece that we've
- 5:11watched tonight. And let's start with Simon.
- 5:16It was incredibly entertaining rubbish.
- 5:21But yeah, you leave science brain, you leave medicine brain
- 5:24at the at the door, but you go into a movie like this knowing
- 5:28that you're going to do that. Some of the dialogue was
- 5:32hilariously terrible. There were bits that were just
- 5:36really, you're doing that, you're doing that on top of
- 5:40that, on top of that. And then he's got a Zippo that's
- 5:45still going to light. But I, I really loved it.
- 5:51It was a complete turn your brain off and mellow
- 5:55individuals. Luke, what did you think?
- 6:00This is great. It, it, it is everything, Simon
- 6:04said. But it keeps you on your toes as
- 6:06well. Because the only thing I
- 6:07remembered about this was the biggest star in the movie gets
- 6:11eaten about halfway through. I thought it happened sooner,
- 6:13but it's, it's more like halfway.
- 6:16But it'll play with things like that.
- 6:18So it might be very not clever and cheesy and silly, but it'll
- 6:24keep on your toes. Like killing him off or killing
- 6:26the doctor lady you think is going to survive and make out
- 6:29with Thomas Jane at the end. No, she gets eaten as well.
- 6:32So I appreciate that it might be a little silly and cliched in
- 6:36some areas, but it takes a few chances.
- 6:39I like that. Oh, she got Ian the whole He
- 6:42just took her in his mouth in one go, took one bite and she
- 6:45was gone. No, she got bitten in half,
- 6:48didn't she? Oh, was she?
- 6:49I thought he just took her down the throat and she was gone.
- 6:53I don't think the. Leg was leftover and he went
- 6:55back for it. The seconds.
- 6:58There was quite a bit of leg twitching after people had died
- 7:01in this, wasn't there? Oh man, that CGI of his foot.
- 7:05Yeah, it looked like a. Psychographic foot, yeah.
- 7:10Jeff, come on. What did you think?
- 7:14Well, Joe, this one took me by surprise.
- 7:17I'd only ever heard like of the silly bits and the
- 7:23cinematography is incredible. I've restarted it just so I'd
- 7:27have some visuals, but this ocean on the opening shot, like
- 7:32just, I mean, the sharks look incredible.
- 7:35The lighting, especially when the people get their skin out,
- 7:39like the lighting is just glistening.
- 7:41Everybody's wet. It's just a joy to look at.
- 7:45When people get. Their skin out can.
- 7:47You please elaborate on that. Well, at one point, Dr., what's
- 7:53her name, takes her wet suit off and it it looks like a painting,
- 7:58like it's just a really, really nice.
- 8:02She she was wearing. The most?
- 8:04From the lighting, brassiere and panties.
- 8:07Imagine if she had had her like Friday or like her Tuesday,
- 8:11whatever your laundry day panties are.
- 8:14The Bridget Jones pants. Yeah.
- 8:17And of course that, you know, you chose this for us, Lucy.
- 8:20So I'm assuming you like this but summarise it.
- 8:24OK, well, I really like it. I these days I what I look for
- 8:29in a film is not necessarily silliness, hopefully a bit of
- 8:35explosion and mindless violence, and I like it to be done well.
- 8:39But I'm not looking for depth or a moving cultural experience.
- 8:48I prefer to just turn off my brain and get that sort of
- 8:51experience somewhere else rather than at the cinema.
- 8:55So I saw all this at the cinema when it first released.
- 8:59I remember seeing it at the cinema.
- 9:01I have the DVD somewhere to rent it off the telly this evening,
- 9:06but I really like it. It is daft, but it it has
- 9:11tension, it has action, it has explosions, it has people being
- 9:14eaten by sharks. Thomas James looks completely
- 9:18ridiculously hot all the way through it.
- 9:21A bonus, frankly, from my point of view, he wore.
- 9:24This sort of wet suit that was cut off at the arms, so he just
- 9:27showed off his arms throughout the whole movie.
- 9:31And yeah, it's extremely silly, but it's, I, I just really like
- 9:36it because I think it's silly, but it's done really well.
- 9:39So the effects are good. The, the visual is good, like
- 9:41you said, the ocean, the views of the sea.
- 9:44And it does mess about with the tropes of shark films.
- 9:49So at the beginning there's this boat full of young partygoers
- 9:53and the teddy bear falls into the sea and the radio falls in
- 9:56and then the sharks attacking. Oh, no, they're going to.
- 9:58And actually, no, they're not, because somebody's going to come
- 10:02and fetch the shark. So it does mess about with your
- 10:05expectations a little bit. It was also as well, one of the
- 10:09things I loved best about this was I kept going, oh, they're
- 10:12not. They wouldn't do that.
- 10:14And without fail, they did it. They turned the oven on.
- 10:18I mean, we'll get there. We'll talk about that.
- 10:21The man ended up, you know, surfing on the shark at the
- 10:26which he's done. At the beginning, so check off
- 10:28shark surfing. To be fit, I suppose the more
- 10:31important question is what is your favorite ridiculous stroke
- 10:35genius moment in this film because the line is so thin
- 10:38between those two things and let's go round in the same
- 10:41direction. Simon The.
- 10:44Oven. Oh, please elaborate.
- 10:48That's one bit where the the cook character is trying to
- 10:52escape from the shark in his flooded kitchen, along with his
- 10:55pet parrot. And so he climbs up the
- 10:57flimsiest shelving imaginable, and it's the.
- 11:00Only thing still standing though weirdly.
- 11:06Yeah, and his, his pet parrot jumps onto a frying pan that's
- 11:12floating on the water and the shark eats it and then knocks
- 11:17him off these shelves. So he hides in the in this
- 11:20massive oven that the shark then manages to turn on.
- 11:25So he's being cooked in this oven.
- 11:26He's got an axe with him. He knocks his way through the
- 11:29top of the oven to the oven above.
- 11:34And meanwhile, the shark, having having to have risen with the
- 11:41the floodwaters that the oven he went into is now underwater and
- 11:46sticks his head in, sticks the shark's head in the oven.
- 11:48He's in the oven above. He dives over the over the
- 11:54shark. And there's this actually,
- 11:56throughout the film, there's this really entertaining thing
- 11:59to watch where LL Cool J obviously cannot swim and has
- 12:03been taught how to doggy paddle and that's it.
- 12:06But he's stunt double swims pretty well.
- 12:09So he's stunt double swims into the the entrance to the the
- 12:13kitchen, and he has a Zippo in his pocket that despite having
- 12:18been underwater, miraculously still works.
- 12:21And he manages to blow up the the gas coming out of the oven
- 12:26and take out the shark with it without getting burnt himself.
- 12:29It is every rule of logic out of the window and it was joyous to
- 12:35watch. Look, I don't really imagine in
- 12:37the cinema that was that it was. Fabulous.
- 12:39Yeah, to. Watch.
- 12:41Especially as the parrots said bite me and then got eaten.
- 12:44You ate my bird. You ate my bird bag, he.
- 12:46Was gone and. There there's so much borderline
- 12:53filthy dog and this which kept the 12 year old child to me
- 12:58wildly entertained to. Him at the end, didn't he?
- 13:01You're lucky, didn't eat your ass.
- 13:03Took me a while to realize he was talking about the shark
- 13:08Luke. So what was the stupidest moment
- 13:11in this movie for you? Stroke genius.
- 13:14I think the oven one is like is the winner.
- 13:16But there's a thing where LL Cool J Thomas Jane and Doctor
- 13:22Lady Saffron Burrows in an airlock or something like that.
- 13:27They get to pressurize it with water and kind of shoot
- 13:30themselves up out of the thing into the onto the surface or
- 13:34something like that. Like it wouldn't make them
- 13:36explode or kind of destroy them somehow.
- 13:40No. And then like right before they
- 13:42do it. Hello, cool.
- 13:44J's got to be like, hey, we all believe in God and Jesus.
- 13:48We're going to get through this. OK, I was bit that's now.
- 13:53It wasn't out of left field. He's been like that the whole
- 13:55movie, but just the scene, it just, it didn't call for that,
- 14:00but I. Think Riza rose up into the
- 14:02ocean though, right The second he was out of there.
- 14:04He got punished for that sermon, didn't he?
- 14:06That shark got him straight away and he still fucking survived.
- 14:10I couldn't believe it. Jeff, can you top that for
- 14:15ridiculous moments? Well, I came in a little late,
- 14:19so right when I came in, the whole surface of the facility
- 14:25was exploding, and that looked pretty awesome.
- 14:30I love that shaft that they had to climb up.
- 14:33Like, climbing is really hard, especially if your hands are wet
- 14:36and they're climbing up hundreds of feet and the water level
- 14:40starts to come in and it's rising and there's a shark and
- 14:43this whole ladder for no reason. I guess there may be there was
- 14:48an explosion or something that should get.
- 14:49And the ladder breaks free from its moorings, comes down and
- 14:53hits the other side of the wall. It was very Doctor Who, I feel
- 14:57like. And the lady drops off the
- 15:00ladder, goes into the water, and dude does all this rad acrobatic
- 15:03stuff. Was it Thomas Jane?
- 15:05Yeah. And he's like hanging with his
- 15:07hands down, waiting for her to to get up high enough to grab
- 15:11him and right as their fingers are about to touch like Neo Ink
- 15:15gets her. It was exciting as hell.
- 15:19Then she we were going, where is she?
- 15:21Where is she? She got gone and then a second
- 15:23later the shark bursting out of the water with her and his jaws
- 15:30and was she chopped in half? I can't remember.
- 15:33She was the one that got chopped fully in half.
- 15:35Lovely. Stuff, Lucy.
- 15:38Well, all of it really. I mean the shark not approving
- 15:41of smoking was one of my favorite bits, but as soon as as
- 15:45soon as as soon as the the brilliant professor amazing.
- 15:49Piercing the shark had. His arm off, which I mean just
- 15:53rude really, to smoke in a laboratory and what else?
- 16:00Oh yeah, and sharks not liking motivational speakers either.
- 16:03That's because. Of the whole.
- 16:06Movie personally, so the the the the desire to just bite somebody
- 16:10into when they've been trying to G you up a bit is irresistible
- 16:14really. That speech went on longer than
- 16:16Kapoldi's regeneration speech. It went on and on and on, and
- 16:21then the shark came up and murdered him.
- 16:23And the look of relief on everyone else's face.
- 16:26I want to see that outtake from Doctor Who where a shark just
- 16:30gets Capaldi in the middle of. His place, That would be
- 16:33wonderful. Actually, what that shark was
- 16:36thinking, if we had a thought bubble, it would have been
- 16:38saying this could have been an e-mail.
- 16:46I mean, there's three people wrote this thing, right?
- 16:49Duncan Kennedy did the first pass and then, unbelievably, it
- 16:52was rewritten by Donna Powers and Wayne Powers.
- 16:57Yeah, but I think that was. Crafted this dialogue.
- 17:00To change the direction of it, because from the looks of it,
- 17:03the first version was much more, oh, like aliens.
- 17:09So more, more military setting, more guns, more explosives, more
- 17:14sort of big beefy soldiers. And they, they wanted it to be
- 17:18the director presumably wanted it to be more like it was.
- 17:22So I think they came in and sort of changed that direction of it.
- 17:29You mean we could have had more big beefy soldiers in wet suits?
- 17:33Damn. Damn man.
- 17:35Instead. Instead they got a couple of
- 17:39ladies with their outfits loose. But there were various parts of
- 17:44the movie where we were all perking up in different times.
- 17:50Do you? Guys like this genre of this
- 17:52sort of little mad B movie, hyper intelligent shark genre,
- 17:59you know, like Sharknado and all the crazy films that come with
- 18:02it. Simon.
- 18:04Yes, I absolutely love B movies I grew up on like the the
- 18:09original 1950s stuff and all the Hammer horror and it's one of my
- 18:18televisual happy places. I absolutely love it.
- 18:21Recommend like a really terrible stroke.
- 18:25Ecstatically wonderful B movie. The Trollenberg Terror.
- 18:29And why is that? It's it's wildly entertaining.
- 18:35There's a hilarious bit where they they end up running around
- 18:39this abandoned village trying to find this kid that's just
- 18:44wandered off while they're all they're trying to evacuate
- 18:47everything. It's got Hoo alumni in it.
- 18:50It was based on a an ITVTV science fiction thing, the first
- 18:56TV science fiction that ITV put out and it's just wildly
- 18:59entertaining. Alf Garnett is in it being a
- 19:01scientist. It has people getting their
- 19:04heads chopped off. Ruben from Fang Rock is there as
- 19:10a an axe wielding murderer. What that thing hasn't got is
- 19:15it's brilliant, right? Coming soon SO.
- 19:18Entertained. It's possible.
- 19:22It's also possible there's an Ex and Ross experiment episode on
- 19:25it. Just to toot my own horn.
- 19:27Check it. Out Luke B movies.
- 19:30Yeah, yeah, I love B movies. I also grew up watching Mystery
- 19:34Science Theatre 3000 as well, which introduced me to even more
- 19:39different kinds of B movies and stuff as well.
- 19:41So I think I've got a higher higher tolerance for for shit
- 19:45than most, but that's right. Accepted.
- 19:51Sensor right? With what?
- 19:52One in one sitting? Let's go.
- 19:57And do you have a dreadful B movie to recommend?
- 20:00Oh, not dreadful, but dreadfully good.
- 20:03I'd say like The Miami Connection, which is this
- 20:07schlocky kind of 80s action ninja movie for some reason
- 20:13about a group of guys who are best friends and they play music
- 20:18together and they beat up gangs as as as karate guys for some
- 20:24reason. Yeah, it's fun.
- 20:26It's silly. It's it was like a lost movie
- 20:29from the 80s and someone found it in, it's like a Doctor Who
- 20:32story. Someone found it in the garbage
- 20:34or someone found it on the shelf.
- 20:36It's lost 80s B movie and restored it and put it out into
- 20:41the world and it's it's hilarious.
- 20:43It's really it's really fun. I.
- 20:44Used to have moved down the pound shop, you know, like
- 20:47obviously for for a pound and I used to buy them and me and my
- 20:50mate would have like B movie nights.
- 20:51So I've got quite a few on the shelf.
- 20:54Jeff, are you, you know, are your tastes usually more
- 20:57sophisticated than this or do you not mind a bit of schlock?
- 21:00Well. I'm embarrassed to admit that I
- 21:03don't have a A deep, I don't know, experience with B movies.
- 21:09I couldn't even get into Godzilla.
- 21:12So my closest analogs might be True Lies Total Recall like
- 21:22cartoons like Akira move. Your ass along.
- 21:24I was trying to. Think of the biggest wildest
- 21:27things and maybe The Force Awakens when they're trying to
- 21:32escape the the ship. But yeah, I'm a much more sedate
- 21:38person in general, I think. Well.
- 21:40You're choosing our next movie, so I can't wait to find out what
- 21:43that's going to be at the end of this episode.
- 21:46Sedate, did you say? I think I've got a clue what
- 21:48that is as well, Lucy. I mean, I'm assuming you love a
- 21:53bit of schlock. Oh yeah, I didn't always.
- 21:55I, when I was younger, I, I, I didn't realise that I liked
- 22:00films like that. But actually I do, and I've
- 22:03found that they are, for the last few years at any rate.
- 22:06The things that sort of lift my mood or restore my equilibrium
- 22:09is watching people punch 7 bells out of each other and then
- 22:12exploding things. I have a low tolerance at the
- 22:16moment, or I have for the last few years for films designed to
- 22:21touch the emotions I would prefer to avoid.
- 22:24I would prefer to see things getting blown up and people
- 22:26facing 7 bells out of each other.
- 22:28So I love the John Wick films. I think they're fantastic.
- 22:33What I particularly liked about the last John, the latest John
- 22:36Wick film, was that there were lots of fights where that was
- 22:39sort of wince inducing. But the thing that really made
- 22:42people wince was when he kept falling down the stairs because
- 22:45everybody knows what that feels like.
- 22:47Nobody's had a fist fight with somebody, you know, Kevlar or
- 22:50Jackie or got shot at, but everybody's fallen down the
- 22:53stairs at some point. So we'll go, oh, wow.
- 22:57And oh, I liked, I haven't seen the newest Deadpool, but I liked
- 23:01the first two Deadpool films. And yeah, just sort of, I mean,
- 23:09I'm a child of the 80s, but I came to the 80s movies later
- 23:12when I was in my late teens and 20s.
- 23:14So things like The Running Man and Predator and the two, two
- 23:21and three Terminator films and only accidentally all Arnold
- 23:26Schwarzenegger films, you see you're losing everything in the
- 23:2980s So what can you say? And yeah, I did the same thing.
- 23:33I used to go to the pound shop and get a what looked like a
- 23:37potentially rubbish film and have a thing called Ship Film
- 23:40Sunday where I just watch it and which are on about it on
- 23:43Facebook and they realise that nobody was paying any attention
- 23:46but didn't matter. But you do occasionally find
- 23:48some that are sort of slightly better than you think they might
- 23:51have been. So there was one called, I think
- 23:54it's called Doomsday and it's a British film and it stars Rona
- 23:59Mitra, who was the model for the the live version of Lara Croft
- 24:05at some points. And she's a a hard bitten
- 24:13soldier type with an electronic eye that comes out so she can
- 24:18see round corners and and there's a Craven government and
- 24:22a pandemic and all kinds of people who Adrian Lester's in
- 24:27it. Sean Pertwee's in it.
- 24:30I've definitely seen this. Malcolm Mcdowell's Malcolm
- 24:33McDowell Yes, Malcolm Mcdowell's in it, and I think it was
- 24:38directed by the same man who directed Dog Soldiers.
- 24:41Because short. Virtually goes on about dying in
- 24:44all these. I mean, it's not, it's not a
- 24:46spoiler to say that he's going to die.
- 24:49And yeah, it it just was, oh, Bob Hoskins was in it too,
- 24:52completely unexpectedly. That was very as a policeman and
- 24:57Alexander Siddiq was in it as the Prime Minister.
- 25:01So it's a huge, like, you know, very familiar cast.
- 25:04But actually it was, I found it a lot.
- 25:09It sounds really cheap. So I found it better than I was
- 25:11expecting. But actually it was pretty good
- 25:12and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it on its own merits
- 25:15rather than sort of at it. And I did like the fact that the
- 25:18people in it behaved like, didn't behave like people in
- 25:23action films sometimes do. So when somebody, a second
- 25:26person, jumps into the fight, the person doesn't go come on,
- 25:29they go, oh. Sake.
- 25:32Rather than. The the worst stroke.
- 25:35Best one I've ever seen, and it's the one I always talk about
- 25:38on a hamster is a nymphoid barbarian in dinosaur hell,
- 25:42which is this fabulous B movie, which was done so cheap and it's
- 25:46got this actress. I think she might have just been
- 25:48a model because she was very pretty, but they made her look
- 25:51like a Neanderthal and she's in furs and she's sort of running
- 25:54around this plate and they ain't even got money for CGI.
- 25:57So as people dressed up as dinosaurs attacking her, they're
- 26:00trying to shoot it in a way, and she just loses her clothes
- 26:03throughout the movie and runs her.
- 26:04I mean, it's absolutely dreadful, but it's very, very
- 26:06funny. You seen the The Langoliers,
- 26:09That's a great B movie. You seen that doesn't?
- 26:12Sound dreadful at. All I'll send you a copy look.
- 26:16Oh, the Stephen King, Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:20Balki from Perfect Strangers is a horribly annoying character in
- 26:24that 10. Yeah, Bronson.
- 26:27Pinchot Do they get murdered? Horribly on the tarmac when the
- 26:31Langoliers attack. I think so.
- 26:34He's whining the whole time. CGI.
- 26:37It looks so terrible, but it is I.
- 26:39Didn't I didn't enjoy. I don't Stephen King's creep me
- 26:42out too much generally. I have seen The Shining, which
- 26:48obviously was not really Stephen King's, it was Stanley
- 26:51Kubrick's. And I've seen Doctor Sleep,
- 26:53which had an unsatisfying ending.
- 26:55So I had to text my brother and make sure that the ending in the
- 26:57book was different to the ending in the film.
- 26:59So yeah, wait a. Stephen King's story with a bad
- 27:02ending. I don't.
- 27:03I haven't. I mean, it was unsatisfying to
- 27:05me because I wanted the character to live who died in
- 27:08the film. So I had to check with my
- 27:09brother whether whether it was the same in the book or whether
- 27:12they'd done it differently. He's got a great idea.
- 27:16He's he's got a brilliant idea and he just can't execute it
- 27:20well. I haven't read them because they
- 27:21are the the concepts creep me out too much, so I'm not going
- 27:24to do that. But I like it.
- 27:25I like B movies when they're when they're taking it
- 27:29seriously. I don't like it when they're too
- 27:31knowing and sort of, you know, ha ha, look at this nudge,
- 27:33nudge. I prefer it when they're just
- 27:37going for it. And sometimes it's funny, and
- 27:39sometimes it's actually quite good.
- 27:41I mean, there was a bit of a knowing wink, well, a bit a huge
- 27:46wink out of the screen. But like I said, it was like a
- 27:48Bee Movie on a Hollywood budget, so it was taking itself fairly
- 27:52seriously. You just all would have seen the
- 27:55room, right? Oh yeah, what's a fella's name?
- 28:00Tommy Boys now. Yeah, Tommy.
- 28:02Was that all right? I.
- 28:03Did not hurt her. I did not.
- 28:05He cannot say one line. Naturalistically, it's the worst
- 28:09movie. Oh, hi.
- 28:11Mark. Yeah, that's it.
- 28:14All right. Cool all.
- 28:16Right. The last question I'm going to
- 28:17ask you before Jeff reveals the title, the second film Club film
- 28:23book I was about to say is would you recommend this film to
- 28:28people in your circle? You know, so I'm thinking Simon
- 28:30for you, maybe for Ken, Luke for you, Andrew, Lucy for you, Si
- 28:36and Jeff for you, whoever that lovely person was when you swung
- 28:39the camera around and we saw her on the sofa.
- 28:42That's my good friend Casey. Hey.
- 28:45Casey, Simon. I do know people that I would
- 28:50recommend this film to. Absolutely.
- 28:53Ken isn't one of them. He doesn't really have an
- 28:58appreciation for this kind of kitch and this kind of if he's
- 29:05going to watch AB movie, he'll watch a A a classic 1950s B
- 29:11movie and thoroughly enjoy it. Whereas I think he'd see this as
- 29:15a bit Hollywood and probably not see beyond it.
- 29:18But I know a lot of people who would absolutely love this film,
- 29:21one of whom will be getting my DVD copy.
- 29:23Oh. Great.
- 29:24Oh, it's stood in the rounds, Luke.
- 29:27Yeah, watch it with friends, don't be sober if you don't have
- 29:31to be either and and enjoy. It's good for a laugh, but it'll
- 29:35keep you on your toes with the some of its twists.
- 29:39Like some people get eaten earlier than you think, others
- 29:42get eaten later or not at all. You know the kids don't get
- 29:47eaten at the start. It plays with you a little bit
- 29:49whilst also being cheesy fun that shows you the.
- 29:53Level of sophistication you're working with here.
- 29:55Some people get eaten earlier than others.
- 29:58That's right. Earlier than you'd expect them
- 30:00to. Yeah, Jeff.
- 30:03Is poor Casey going to be watching this before the end of
- 30:06the day? I couldn't possibly imagine her
- 30:11enjoying it. We're going to watch something
- 30:16sedate later. What do you?
- 30:18Mean by? Something sedate.
- 30:19Will you please name and shame the film?
- 30:23Well, I mean, like, her taste is a little different from mine,
- 30:27but like Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, Marvelous.
- 30:32Not a lot of things blowing up in that sort of show.
- 30:35What's? The fellow's name who plays the
- 30:38the director. In that, he's just Martin.
- 30:41Short God I. Love him.
- 30:44If we had nobility here, he would definitely be a Sir.
- 30:48Yeah. And Lucy?
- 30:50Well, I mean, I suppose the answer's yes.
- 30:51You recommended it to us. Well, I don't, I mean it.
- 30:55It depends if you if you are up for people being chewed in half
- 31:00by sharks and things getting blown up and tension and
- 31:04underwater. Many, many CIS we talked.
- 31:08To who fans Lucy? Then yes, by all means go for
- 31:12it. But there is quite a lot of
- 31:14blood and some of it, some of the effects are pretty graphic.
- 31:18Some of them work well and therefore are more disturbing
- 31:21than others. So I would, I would place that,
- 31:24that sort of warning on it. But otherwise, yeah, go nuts.
- 31:26Why not? I forgot to mention it.
- 31:30Like the director does a great job with art direction, editing,
- 31:36sound editing. Cinematographer Stephen Winden
- 31:39is incredible. It's it's the people and their
- 31:43words that come out of their mouths.
- 31:45That is a little questionable. But yeah, it's beautiful to look
- 31:49at. Has.
- 31:49Anyone seen A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 because he directed
- 31:52that as well. Sure.
- 31:53Have die. Hard 2.
- 31:56I've definitely seen that a. Handful of films to his name.
- 32:00And a bunch of Fast and Furious which I haven't seen in the.
- 32:04One that was married to Geena Davis.
- 32:06For a minute and they. Made the pirate film with her
- 32:09and Matthew Modine in that I can't remember the name I think.
- 32:12So the long kiss. Good night as well, I think.
- 32:16What's the cutthroat Ireland? Yes, I think that was it.
- 32:20Yeah, I didn't. I never saw it, but I saw about
- 32:22it do. You know, you say about the art
- 32:25direction, I feel as if this is what we want Doctor Who to look
- 32:27like. It's under the basics and things
- 32:30like this. Because as we were going
- 32:32through, it's like, yeah, this bit on this ladder is a bit like
- 32:34Voyage of the Dam. This bit under here is a bit
- 32:37like, yeah, but they all look shit in Doctor Who, whereas they
- 32:39looked amazing in this film. Yeah.
- 32:41But Doctor Who is and always was and was television, and this is
- 32:46film. And they're certainly making
- 32:49strides, yeah. But the camera is always in
- 32:52motion, the editing is really sharp and quick.
- 32:56Jeff, there's a huge responsibility bestowed upon you
- 33:00right now. So when we return to gather in
- 33:03about a month's time, what on earth are we going to be
- 33:06watching? OK, it's one of my top five
- 33:10favorite films. It's a comedy.
- 33:13See if you can recognize this quote.
- 33:16Rodents of Unusual Size. I don't believe they exist.
- 33:21Click, click. Bang.
- 33:22There he comes. Yeah, that's Princess Bride.
- 33:24Baby can. I.
- 33:26Just see if I've got this right. Is it the one with Anne Hathaway
- 33:28in it? No, that's the Princess Diaries.
- 33:32Oh, what's The Princess Bride? OK so it's a medieval fantasy
- 33:39but like if your comedy friends put it on like at the local
- 33:44park, like all the sets are pretty generic but the acting is
- 33:49incredible. The funniest people are in it.
- 33:53Who's the guy that does Miracle Mike?
- 33:57Miracle Max? Harry Met Sally.
- 34:02Are you thinking, are you thinking about the guy from My
- 34:05Dinner with Andre? He's he's, he's one of the well,
- 34:08no. He's incredible.
- 34:09He plays Vassini, I can't remember his name either.
- 34:12Mandy. Can take him on star.
- 34:13Trek and. Wally Shawn.
- 34:16Wallace Shawn. He plays Grand Negus, doesn't
- 34:19he? He's Wallace.
- 34:19Shawn in this movie, Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:22Assault on there, Robin. Wright.
- 34:25Robin Wright is incredible. Carrie Elway's Andre the Giant,
- 34:31Did you mention him already? Mandy Patinkin from Criminal
- 34:35Minds, He. Does an ego?
- 34:37Montoya. You killed my father.
- 34:39Pray to die. Yeah, well, I've.
- 34:42Never seen it so I can't wait. I mean.
- 34:44Obviously. Everyone's got the option to
- 34:46come and watch this film with us if they want to or not, but
- 34:49story? Within a story.
- 34:51The idea is that I haven't, I haven't seen all of the film,
- 34:54but I have read the novelization, the novel, which
- 34:56is brilliant too. And the idea is that an A
- 35:00grandfather is telling a grandfather or a father
- 35:03grandfather I think is telling his grandson, reading his
- 35:06grandson the story. And the grandfather is Peter
- 35:09Falk. He's reading the.
- 35:12Story. But in presumably in the film,
- 35:15but in the book, he'll get to a bit and say, oh, no, this bit's
- 35:18really boring. It's all about hacks.
- 35:20I'm going to skip this bit and go on to the next.
- 35:22So you've sort of you're reading, it's like you're seeing
- 35:25it through the eyes of the the people outside of it as well.
- 35:29But yeah, it's a sort of Rotania fantasy land with evil Princess
- 35:33and giants and yeah, the. Car sounds incredible.
- 35:39All level went quite well then. Oh, I'm just.
- 35:42Imagining scenes from it, trying to remember.
- 35:45After in a month's time, All right, It's your choice.
- 35:47You better be there. One of the most famous lines in
- 35:52it made it into a a workshop, a networking workshop, and it was
- 36:02a slide about how you should introduce yourself to somebody.
- 36:05And so it was. Tell them your name, explain
- 36:09your connection to the person, and then manage their
- 36:11expectations. So I am Inigo Montoya.
- 36:14You killed my father, prepared to die.
- 36:18Lucy, you should be a film historian.
- 36:22You've missed your calling, you know.
- 36:25Well, everybody, thank you so much for coming tonight.
- 36:28It's been an absolute blast. Very quickly, can I go around
- 36:31and ask where people can find you if they wish to find you on
- 36:34the back of this recording, Simon?
- 36:38Well the easiest place to find me is as one of the Co hosts of
- 36:41the X and MOS Experiment podcast on Doctor Who and archive
- 36:47television, Tonic Screwdriver podcast on Gin, Kinky Boots, a
- 36:51watch through of Avengers episodes and the Archive of
- 36:57Audio Antiquities where we look at audio drama.
- 37:01All with my good friend Ken Moss.
- 37:04It's some prolific content. We like to keep busy.
- 37:09And. We've been, we've been doing it
- 37:10a long time, I know. There's about 500 episodes.
- 37:13Banks as well. Including yours.
- 37:15Yeah, including. That Don't worry, I'll listen to
- 37:18it when it comes out. Luke, where are you?
- 37:21Well, the easiest way for Doctor Who people to listen to me is
- 37:27our book clubs with Oh. Yeah, I'm like.
- 37:29Over over a dozen of them now. And if for some reason you also
- 37:33like Japanese professional wrestling, I've been I've got
- 37:37over 200 episodes of that never open podcasts.
- 37:40So there I don't think the fandoms really cross the
- 37:43streams, but you never. Know until now, Jeff.
- 37:49Hello. Yeah, you can find me all over
- 37:52the Internet at El Hefe Tacoma. That's ELJEFE Tacoma.
- 37:57I've Done Everything is Awesome, which is an arts and issue
- 38:01interview podcast, and I do Shattered Worlds RPG, which is
- 38:05an actual play podcast using a space opera RPGI created.
- 38:11And I've got a new show coming up very soon called The Great
- 38:15and Secret Knowledge, a speculative fiction podcast
- 38:18where we go deep into the text. We start with Piranesi by
- 38:22Susanna Clark, and we're moving on to The X-Files, so that
- 38:28should be out within a month. You better.
- 38:29Send me a link to that please at Lucy.
- 38:33Well, I'm at Lucy McCall on Twitter and various versions of
- 38:39my name on Instagram and Blue Sky and Facebook, where I spend
- 38:42various amounts of time because I can't cope with the social
- 38:46media being all over the place and so I keep forgetting and
- 38:50just dropping to like a few things and then disappear again.
- 38:54I'm on various podcasts when people ask me to be.
- 38:57Can I? Play a game.
- 38:58Can I shout podcasts at you and you say yes or no?
- 39:00Yeah. OK.
- 39:01OK. Trap one.
- 39:02Yes. Have some blunt pen.
- 39:03Knife. Yes.
- 39:06Library of impossible things, No.
- 39:08Oh, I'll have a word with him. Caitlin.
- 39:12A bit of string. Yeah.
- 39:14What's in the box? Yes, bloody.
- 39:16Hell, you're prolific as well, wouldn't you?
- 39:18Well, no, I mean, you know, a few and also, oh.
- 39:23Strangers in space, we did. Strangers in space as well,
- 39:25didn't we? Yes, you did.
- 39:28Yeah, and I have some fan fiction which is hanging around
- 39:30on hoofit.com if anyone wants to read it.
- 39:33Guys, thank you so much for your time.
- 39:36I will see you all in a month.
