- 0:00I'm excited for what God has in store for us this Bible study,
- 0:04and I hope that you have a copy of God's Word with you.
- 0:06There's something about physical Bibles that that is much more
- 0:10helpful than any other medium, Not against any other medium.
- 0:13I use them, but I hope you have a physical copy of the Bible
- 0:16with you. Let's turn out together the
- 0:18Second Kings chapter 25. Second Kings chapter 25.
- 0:25What we have before us is a historical record of the final
- 0:31deportation of the people of Judah and the ultimate
- 0:37destruction of their Kingdom. To say that this is an important
- 0:45section of Scripture would be a massive understatement, because
- 0:50in actuality, this is a watershed moment for the history
- 0:55of God's people and the overarching narrative of
- 1:00redemption. And before we read any verse,
- 1:04I'd like for us to briefly think back to some of the greatest
- 1:08highlights of our study in the Old Testament so far.
- 1:13The miraculous exodus from Egypt.
- 1:19The incredible patience of God in the wilderness journey.
- 1:24The conquest of the Promised Land in the book of Joshua, the
- 1:28variety of challenges in the days of the Judges, the amazing
- 1:35covenant that Almighty God makes with David and his descendants.
- 1:40And who can forget the establishment and the
- 1:43construction of the temple, which would be the earthly
- 1:47dwelling place of the glory of God in a more permanent way than
- 1:51the Tabernacle? What great investment God made
- 1:56for this people. What tremendous long-suffering
- 2:00and steadfast love throughout their failures.
- 2:06What amazing hope is attached to this nation.
- 2:13And throughout our study of the Hebrew Scriptures, we have
- 2:17consistently recognized the Lord's pardon and protection and
- 2:24preservation, preservation of his people, namely, and
- 2:28especially towards Judah and Jerusalem.
- 2:32It's almost left us now to be expected, expecting that God's
- 2:35going to continue to do that. But what we're about to discover
- 2:39is that this time is different. This time is different.
- 2:45The northern Kingdom of Israel has already been exiled by this
- 2:49Syrian empire, and now we're about to discover that Judah is
- 2:53going to share in their faith, but it's going to be more
- 2:57devastating. Devastating because of their
- 3:01connection to the Davidic dynasty.
- 3:04And so I want us to look at Second Kings 25, verse 8 down to
- 3:09verse 10. And we'll continue at that pace
- 3:12for the rest of the evening. In the 5th month, on the 7th day
- 3:19of the month, that was the 19th year of King Nebuchadnezzar,
- 3:24king of Babylon, Nebu Zeridan, the captain of the bodyguard, a
- 3:28servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem.
- 3:32And he burned the House of the Lord and the King's house, and
- 3:37all the houses of Jerusalem. Every great house he burned
- 3:43down, and all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the
- 3:47captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.
- 3:54Father, you are the teacher, and we are your desperate, hungry
- 4:02students. We are your disciples, and we
- 4:05ask that you would illumine our minds.
- 4:07We ask, Lord, that you would fortify our faith and that Lord,
- 4:12you would cause us to fall deeper in love with You as you
- 4:16showcase the sophistication, the majesty, the brilliance, the
- 4:21wisdom, the glory of Your word. So, Lord, we pray that there
- 4:26would be nothing that would interfere with the transmission
- 4:28of truth and that we would only hear your voice.
- 4:33This is our longing. That is why we have gathered and
- 4:36we trust that You, O God, see us here as we've come to receive
- 4:40from You. In Jesus name we pray.
- 4:44Amen. If we consider the date that is
- 4:49given back in verse 3 of this chapter, then we we realize here
- 4:54that it's been about a month since Zedekiah attempted to
- 5:00escape the Babylonians who were surrounding Jerusalem only to be
- 5:05captured, blinded and then taken to Babylon to be killed.
- 5:12And what's highlighted here is that the death of the king was
- 5:17clearly not enough for Nebuchadnezzar.
- 5:20He was determined now to bring total destruction to the holy
- 5:25city and to take away anybody that is remaining in the city.
- 5:34And what's so significant is that the destruction was so
- 5:38severe that every edifice, every meaningful structure has been
- 5:46burned down to ash. This was a massive blow.
- 5:51This was unthinkable, inconceivable.
- 5:54And yet it's true. It finally happened.
- 5:59Everything that was known, that was held together by God's grace
- 6:05has now been brought down to rubble.
- 6:09And there's so many things we can comment about that.
- 6:11But what caught my eye is what we find in verse 10.
- 6:16We see here that the Babylonians are identified as the Chaldeans.
- 6:22Now, why would that be important?
- 6:23It may not seem like anything worth underlying, but Chaldeans
- 6:29here don't just appear in this verse, but a total of seven
- 6:32times in the single chapter. And it seems as though this
- 6:39repeated identification of the Babylonians as the Chaldeans is
- 6:42a strong reminder of how far the people of God have fallen from
- 6:47their original calling. What do I mean by that?
- 6:53Well, do you recall what God said to Abram, Abraham before he
- 6:59was ready to make a covenant with him in Genesis 15?
- 7:03Here's an important verse, Genesis 15, verse 7.
- 7:08It says here the Lord spoke to him.
- 7:12I am the Lord who brought you out from ur of the Chaldeans to
- 7:17give you this land to possess. And so the Lord is reminding
- 7:22Abraham in this text that I revealed myself to you.
- 7:27I called you from a specific location.
- 7:31And for us reading this, we are reminded where Israel's story
- 7:35began. It began in this place, God
- 7:38calling the Father of this nation from the UR of the
- 7:41Chaldeans to this new promised land.
- 7:44And here's what's so striking. Centuries go by, and now we find
- 7:49the same God who is calling the Chaldeans to come to this
- 7:56promised land and to remove Abraham's descendants and to
- 8:00bring them back to where it all began.
- 8:05It's as though in an indirect way, it's as though the Spirit
- 8:09of God is giving us hints to recognize how massive this exile
- 8:15is, how significant. And I began to meditate when
- 8:23looking at this, thinking, what was it that brought Abraham out
- 8:28of Ur of the Chaldeans to begin with?
- 8:31Why would he leave his home, his idols, his family to follow God
- 8:35into the unknown? And the Bible actually gives us
- 8:39an answer. It's actually found in the New
- 8:41Testament. So turn with me to Acts 7
- 8:44because this is worth seeing with our own eyes.
- 8:46And looking at Stephen's speech, his sermon really, he gives us
- 8:52an insight as he recalls the history of the people of Israel.
- 8:59Look here in Acts 7 verse 2, and Stephen said, Brothers and
- 9:06fathers, hear me, the God of glory appeared to our father
- 9:11Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in
- 9:15Haran, and said to him, Go out from your land and from your
- 9:18kindred and go into the land that I will show you.
- 9:21Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in
- 9:24Haran, and after his father died, God removed them from
- 9:28there into this land in which you are now living.
- 9:34Stephen was so specific. He was clearly led by the
- 9:36Spirit. Out of all the ways that he
- 9:38could have referenced God, he chose the God of glory.
- 9:44The God of glory appeared to Abraham and Mesopotamia and the
- 9:49land of the Chaldeans. So what happened, though not
- 9:53explicitly explained to us, is that at some point in Abraham's
- 9:57older age, God manifested his glory to him.
- 10:02Was it 1 encounter? Was it repeated encounters?
- 10:05We're not told, but it served as a catalyst for this man to pick
- 10:09up everything and to head into the horizon of the unknown, to
- 10:13follow the true God and to worship him alone.
- 10:16And here's what I want to argue that Abraham's descendants,
- 10:24after so many failures, so many offenses, have clearly proven
- 10:28that they have lost sight of the glory of God.
- 10:34And This is why they are where they are now.
- 10:37This is why they are collapsing. This is why they are paying a
- 10:41very high price for their disobedience.
- 10:44As Romans one tells us, they exchanged the glory of the
- 10:49immortal God for idols, for created things.
- 10:56Here's the lesson for you and I. If you and I want to avoid
- 11:00regressing spiritually, you must be determined to be fixated on
- 11:04the glory of God always. His Holiness, His love, His
- 11:11goodness, His justice, His purity, His faithfulness.
- 11:19Keep that ever before you. Keep discovering it, keep
- 11:23tasting it. Keep asking the Lord to make it
- 11:26real to you, because the moment your vision of His glory
- 11:30diminishes, the more temptation will become alluring and will
- 11:35convince you that there is something greater then savouring
- 11:38His glory. Abraham came out of the land of
- 11:42the Chaldeans because he got a glimpse of God's glory, and now
- 11:46his descendants are going back to that land because they have
- 11:50lost sight of that very same glory.
- 11:54This is remarkable. But then we come back here to
- 11:58our main texts, and we read in verse 11 Babylon not only
- 12:06destroyed the temple, the homes, and the city walls, we read how
- 12:09they dealt with the people who survived the previous
- 12:11deportations. He reads here in verse 11.
- 12:14And the rest of the people who are left in the city and the
- 12:17deserters who are deserted to the king of Babylon, together
- 12:20with the rest of the multitude. Nebu Zerodan, the captain of the
- 12:24guard, carried into exile, but the captain of the guard left
- 12:28some of the poorest of the land to be vine dressers and plowmen.
- 12:32So the king of Babylon says enough is enough.
- 12:36We're going to take every single person out and bring him to our
- 12:39land. Now, what's interesting is that
- 12:41he chooses to leave behind a certain demographic, the poorest
- 12:45of the land, those who had nothing to offer, those who had
- 12:48no noble standing in society. And we're left to wonder, why
- 12:52would he do this? And I don't think there's some
- 12:55deep, mysterious truth to it. I think it's political.
- 12:58It's economic. Babylon, who was already in
- 13:01control of Jerusalem, might have wanted this place to remain as a
- 13:05agricultural asset. And so he chooses the
- 13:09unfortunate to remain in the land and to tend the land and to
- 13:13maintain it so that there would be produce and things that they
- 13:15can benefit from. So that's what it's been reduced
- 13:19to. Now.
- 13:21Most of the people are taken out, a small population stays
- 13:23back. They're just managing the
- 13:25property really, to the benefit of the Babylonians.
- 13:32And yet there's one person I'm thinking about wondering what
- 13:34happened to him, a person that we have referenced many times,
- 13:38at least his writings. Jeremiah, remember him?
- 13:45If we read here that everybody was taken, you might be
- 13:49wondering, did Jeremiah follow in the same direction of Daniel
- 13:54in the first deportation, Ezekiel in the second
- 13:57deportation? Is it Jeremiah's turn now?
- 13:59Is he now going to Babylon to join the other prophets with a
- 14:03new chapter in his ministry? Well, the Scriptures again give
- 14:07us an answer, and the answer actually might surprise you.
- 14:09But the only way you'll discover it is if you go to Jeremiah 40.
- 14:13Look what happens here in Jeremiah 40, beginning in verse
- 14:15one. Jeremiah 40 verse one, the word
- 14:27that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebu Zaradan the
- 14:33captain of the guard, had let him go from Rama when he took
- 14:37him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem
- 14:40and Judah who are being exiled to Babylon.
- 14:43Pause. So what happens here?
- 14:45Well, Jeremiah was mixed in the crowd.
- 14:47He was included among the captives and after some distance
- 14:51the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- 14:56And this is something significant because God is
- 15:00obviously superintending this. He's obviously working
- 15:03providentially, but the captain of the guard now singles out
- 15:07Jeremiah and he says something quite remarkable.
- 15:09Look at verse 2. The captain of the guard took
- 15:12Jeremiah and said to him, The Lord your God pronounce this
- 15:17disaster against this place. The Lord has brought it about
- 15:20and has done as he said, because you sinned against the Lord and
- 15:24did not obey his voice. This thing has come upon you.
- 15:29Now we can keep reading on because he's about to give
- 15:31Jeremiah an offer, but it's worth pausing here and examining
- 15:35some of these comments. Notice that this leader, a Pagan
- 15:41leader, looks at Jeremiah and he admits that he acknowledges
- 15:48God's hand behind Judah's defeat.
- 15:54How did he arrive to this conclusion?
- 15:58I think the most logical answer is that both he and the other
- 16:01leaders in Babylon were very well acquainted with Jeremiah's
- 16:06prophecies, and you can make that case from chapter 39, which
- 16:10we won't turn to because Nebuchadnezzar himself heard
- 16:14about Jeremiah. He in fact gave instruction that
- 16:17he would be left alone. So Nebuchadnezzar himself knew
- 16:23about this prophet, and surely he and the others understood
- 16:27what he proclaimed against his own city.
- 16:32Here's why this is so striking, because the people of God here
- 16:38are humbled by this. They should be.
- 16:39At least these Babylonians demonstrated more faith in the
- 16:44word of the Lord than those who claim to be in covenant with
- 16:46God. Hey, Jeremiah, you know what you
- 16:52said? You know what God said
- 16:54ultimately about this place? It happened.
- 16:58It happened. God kept his word.
- 17:02This this is humbling. Why?
- 17:04Because the crowd in Jerusalem were mocking Jeremiah.
- 17:09They were lining up to the prophets who were saying,
- 17:11there's no way Babylon is going to take over this place.
- 17:15And yet in contrast, you have these unbelievers who say, yeah,
- 17:20God's word said it, and he did it.
- 17:24What a strange sight to see the word of God making a deeper
- 17:27impression on those outside of covenant with God than those who
- 17:34claim to be in relationship with him.
- 17:38This is startling. But moreover, what's even more
- 17:41shocking is how this unbeliever who worship false God, false
- 17:45gods, and maybe he recognized that every land has their own
- 17:48deity or deities, sure, but he looks at Jeremiah and he speaks
- 17:55him as a representative of this people, and he calls them
- 18:00sinners. Looking into verse 3, the Lord
- 18:05has brought it about and has done as he said, because you
- 18:08sinned against the Lord and did not obey His voice, this thing
- 18:11has come upon you. If the destruction of the holy
- 18:16city weren't humbling enough, how much more humiliating is it
- 18:20for a Pagan to call out the disobedience of those who claim
- 18:23to follow the true God? You sinned.
- 18:27We recognize that this is the consequence of your
- 18:29disobedience. Who's speaking?
- 18:31You're a prophet? No, an unbelieving ruler of a
- 18:35different nation. And this is yet another example
- 18:40of how the Scriptures in various places cause believers to live
- 18:44in such a way that the world cannot accuse us of
- 18:47contradiction or hypocrisy. If the world is going to
- 18:53confront us about anything, let it be because of our
- 18:56consecration to Christ, not our clear inconsistencies.
- 19:02Let it be because we take holiness seriously, not because
- 19:05we say one thing and live another.
- 19:10I wonder what the faces of these captives look like when this man
- 19:16said in their presence, You're here because you sinned.
- 19:22This is coming from the mouth of a person who does not worship
- 19:24the true God, who does not fear him, who does not submit to his
- 19:28decrees, and he says, you send, oh, May God protect us from ever
- 19:36receiving a comment from an unbeliever that says, wait,
- 19:39wait, aren't you a Christian? Oh wait, wait, didn't you?
- 19:42Didn't you just invite me to church like a couple of months
- 19:44ago? Is this what you guys do at your
- 19:46church? The embarrassing contrast
- 19:51between the Babylonians and the people of God only grows more
- 19:54striking as we continue to read. Are you still there in Jeremiah
- 19:5640? Look at verse 4.
- 20:00He continued to speaks to the prophet.
- 20:02Now behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands.
- 20:07If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I
- 20:11will look after you well. But if it seems wrong to you to
- 20:15come with me to Babylon, do not come.
- 20:17See, the whole land is before you.
- 20:19Go wherever you think it good and right to go.
- 20:25If you remain, then return to Gadalia, the son of Ahikam, son
- 20:29of Shafan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of
- 20:32the cities of Judah and dwelt with him among the people.
- 20:35Or go wherever you think it right to go.
- 20:38So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a
- 20:41present, and let him go. What's the captain of the guard
- 20:48essentially saying? We recognize that you're a
- 20:51prophet. We recognize that you speak on
- 20:55behalf of Yahweh. So we want to make you an offer.
- 20:59If you'd like to come with us to Babylon, you'll be taken care
- 21:02of, you'll be honored, you'll be provided for.
- 21:06But if we're out of whatever reason you want to stay back
- 21:08here with your people, you're free to do that as well.
- 21:11It's your choice. You know what shook me when I
- 21:18read this? How the Babylonians treated
- 21:23Jeremiah better than his own kinsmen.
- 21:27How are we to make sense of this?
- 21:29From a divine standpoint, it's clearly an act of God's mercy
- 21:33granted to one of his servants who suffered throughout his
- 21:37ministry. But from a human standpoint,
- 21:40this shows how the Babylonians held more respect for this
- 21:43prophet than the people of God. Read Jeremiah if you haven't
- 21:49read that book, and you'll find one despicable act of
- 21:53mistreatment after another towards this precious servant of
- 21:56the Lord. Coming from who?
- 21:58His own, Even from those from his own hometown.
- 22:06And yet once the Babylonians meet him, they show such honor
- 22:12and respect. Hey, you come with us.
- 22:14We'll take care of you. You want to stay back here?
- 22:16Here's an allowance and here's a gift.
- 22:22Far be it from us that the world could out give, out serve, out
- 22:31respect, out love out honour. Those who've been forgiven by
- 22:38God and sealed with His Holy Spirit may never be that one
- 22:44Christian from this place or any other place of faith would
- 22:50wrestle with his experience, because he receives kindness and
- 22:56respect and pardon and grace from those who are not connected
- 23:01to the truth than those who are. The Babylonians here are
- 23:10respecting this man of God. What a refreshing thing it must
- 23:14have been for this prophet who had received so many bruises and
- 23:18scars from his own. So he's given a choice.
- 23:24You want to stay or do you want to go?
- 23:26What choice is he going to make? Look at verse 6.
- 23:29Then Jeremiah went to Gaddalia, the son of Aikam at Mizpah, and
- 23:34lived with him among the people who were left in the land.
- 23:38What? You chose to stay?
- 23:44I mean, what did that look like? As they're having this
- 23:46conversation and behind Jeremiah as he's facing Babylon, smoke is
- 23:51rising up to the atmosphere. Flames and embers are still
- 23:57burning. Everything has been reduced to
- 24:01nothing. And the other option is a new
- 24:07life, a promise, inheritance, wonderful favor, comfort, maybe
- 24:15even luxury. And Jeremiah determines I'm
- 24:19going to stay. I'm going to stay.
- 24:25What choice would you make? I wonder whether you think
- 24:29Jeremiah did the right thing or not.
- 24:32I can't help but compare him to Zedekiah in this moment.
- 24:37Remember 2 weeks ago we looked at King Zedekiah?
- 24:40When Jerusalem was surrounded and finally the Babylonians made
- 24:43a breach, what did he do? He packed his bags, he got the
- 24:48army to surround him, and he evades the scene, leaving behind
- 24:51his people, the very same people he was called to shepherd, to
- 24:55watch over and to protect. A clear example of a coward, a
- 25:00failure of a leader. And yet, when Jeremiah was given
- 25:04an opportunity to move on ahead, imagine how tempting that is.
- 25:09You guys didn't listen to me. After years of preaching, this
- 25:13is what you get. I'm moving on.
- 25:16Instead, he chooses to remain with the remnant.
- 25:21He chooses to stay back. Why?
- 25:26Because he's a true shepherd. He's a true leader.
- 25:31Here's what I want to remind us about.
- 25:33A mature and genuine servant of Christ does not walk away from
- 25:38their ministry when it becomes difficult or unattractive.
- 25:47He or she will remain at their post until they receive marching
- 25:51orders from heaven. Too many people give up easily.
- 26:00I've seen it. And if you know that you have
- 26:03the tendency to just abort the call, Move on from the mission.
- 26:09Hop from church to church to church to church.
- 26:15Let me encourage you with this truth.
- 26:17God honors and rewards loyalty. He does.
- 26:25And as I was thinking about this text and this truth, my mind
- 26:29went to what Jesus said about his own disciples before he was
- 26:32arrested after instituting the Lord's Supper.
- 26:37Let me read to you this one verse in Luke 2228.
- 26:41Jesus says You are those who have stayed with me in my
- 26:47trials. You are those in Luke 2228 who
- 26:53have stayed with me in my trials.
- 26:55When I read that, I said, Lord, I want you to be able to say the
- 26:59same about me. I don't want to be faithful to
- 27:04Your word, faithful to the calling you have given me,
- 27:08faithful to the gifts that you have deposited in my life when
- 27:11things are easy or when they are celebrated.
- 27:13I want to stay close to you when it's hard, when it doesn't make
- 27:19sense, when it doesn't really benefit me.
- 27:23I want to stay close to you. Even in trials.
- 27:28Jeremiah made that decision. He didn't take the easy Rd. out.
- 27:34He said, you know, thank you, but I'm going to stay back and
- 27:38we're going to hear maybe another reason why he did that.
- 27:42But let's come back to our main text and see what happens next.
- 27:54Look here at verse 13 and the pillars of bronze that were in
- 27:59the House of the Lord, and the stands in the bronze sea that
- 28:02were in the House of the Lord. The Chaldeans broke in pieces
- 28:05and carried the bronze to Babylon.
- 28:07And they took away the pots and the shovels and the snuffers,
- 28:10and the dishes for incense, and all the vessels of bronze used
- 28:15in the temple service, the fire pans also, and the bowls.
- 28:19What was of gold, the captain of the guard took away as gold, and
- 28:22what was of silver as silver. As for the two pillars, the 1C
- 28:27and the stands that Solomon had made for the House of the Lord,
- 28:29the bronze of all these vessels was beyond weight.
- 28:33The height of the one pillar was 18 cubits, and on it was a
- 28:38capital of bronze. The height of the capital was 3
- 28:40cubits. A latticework and pomegranates
- 28:43all of bronze were all around the capital, and the second
- 28:47pillar had the same with the lattice work.
- 28:53So now the writer goes into greater detail about the
- 28:55desecration of the temple. It's almost like he wants the
- 29:00reader to feel not just speaking in general, but looking at
- 29:06significant things in the House of God being stripped down,
- 29:09being confiscated. But what's in focus here more
- 29:14than anything else, are the pillars.
- 29:18The two pillars that Solomon built and planted at the
- 29:21entrance of the House of worship.
- 29:24Here's a question for you. Does anybody remember the name
- 29:27of those two pillars? If you do, you can lift your
- 29:30hand. Who remembers the names of the
- 29:32two pillars that Solomon built? Anybody know?
- 29:44Boaz is one of them. What's the other one?
- 29:50Say that again, close. I'm not going to give you the
- 29:55answer right away. I want you to turn to see with
- 29:56your own eyes in First Kings Chapter 7.
- 30:02Obviously, these pillars are important for them to be
- 30:04mentioned even at the final part here of Second Kings.
- 30:08Look at verse 21 of First Kings 7.
- 30:15He set up the pillars at the Festival of the Temple.
- 30:18He set up the pillar on the South and called its name Jakin.
- 30:21And he set up the pillar on the north and called its name Boaz.
- 30:27So those are the two names. Now I understand that these are
- 30:31important pieces to the structure, but why name them?
- 30:36Why were they named? Well, the first one, Jakin,
- 30:39means he will establish, Boaz means in him is strength.
- 30:44That's widely accepted as the interpretation.
- 30:46He will establish in him his strength.
- 30:50And clearly the Lord wanted to convey that this truth was as
- 30:54reliable and stable as the pillar themselves.
- 30:59And so anytime someone entered into the courtyards of the
- 31:02temple, they would stand in the shadow of those wonderful
- 31:06realities God has established the people of Judah and the
- 31:09temple and God alone can sustain the people of God and this
- 31:15sacred place of worship. And the irony, right?
- 31:22You come to 2nd Kings of what? Do you realize that the
- 31:25Babylonians come and pull it apart, They throw it in a cart
- 31:31and they transport it to a new land?
- 31:36Did God betray his people? No, the people betrayed their
- 31:40God. Big difference.
- 31:45And the next question is this has God forsaken his people by
- 31:51allowing this? And the answer is yes or no.
- 31:55Clearly He has. He has removed himself, His
- 31:58protective mercy, His guiding grace.
- 32:02He didn't allow for any miraculous intervention to take
- 32:05place to shoo away the enemies of Israel and Judah.
- 32:11But is this permanent? Is this a permanent defeat?
- 32:16And we should know our Bibles well enough to say absolutely
- 32:18not. You know, as much as Jeremiah
- 32:21proclaimed judgement and exile, interwoven in those warnings
- 32:26were promises of return and restoration.
- 32:30And God's desire to communicate that hopeful future was so
- 32:36important to him that he no longer had Jeremiah just say it.
- 32:41As important as his word was, he actually had Jeremiah
- 32:45demonstrated in one of the most unique passages in the book of
- 32:49Jeremiah. He actually has Jeremiah act out
- 32:53a sermon to actually display with an act, an act of faith,
- 33:00ultimately to show just how dependable this word is of
- 33:05return. It's going to happen.
- 33:07This is disciplinary. This is not total annihilation.
- 33:12And so here's the scene, Jeremiah in the 10th year of the
- 33:16the king at the time, Zedekiah, there's a siege.
- 33:19They're surrounded and he's imprisoned.
- 33:21Like they're so sick and tired of this guy that they just put
- 33:23him behind bars. And while he is in prison, God
- 33:28speaks to him. A very strange word.
- 33:33It's in Jeremiah 32. Look at this with me in verse 6.
- 33:49So remember the setting, remember where Jeremiah is, and
- 33:53it says here in Jeremiah 32, verse 6, Jeremiah said the word
- 33:56of the Lord came to me. Behold, Hannamel, the son of
- 34:00Shalom, your uncle will come to you and say by my field that is
- 34:05at Anathong, for the right of the redemption by purchase is
- 34:10yours. Then Hannah Mel, my cousin, came
- 34:13to me in the court of the guard in accordance with the word of
- 34:16the Lord, and said to me by my field that is in Anathoth in the
- 34:20land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is
- 34:22yours. Buy it for yourself.
- 34:24Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
- 34:29Why is this a strange offer? Any idea?
- 34:37He's in prison, that's one thing.
- 34:38But think of the, the wider reality.
- 34:44Well, you can sell it if it's in your family.
- 34:46If there is the necessity of transferring it within your
- 34:50tribe, that is permitted. But think about the wider
- 34:53context. What's going on in Jerusalem and
- 34:55around Jerusalem? A siege.
- 35:00They're at war. They're surrounded by an enemy.
- 35:02This is not the time to to do real estate.
- 35:08More than that, Anna thought, geographically speaking, was a
- 35:13few miles outside of Jerusalem, so it's likely that Babylon had
- 35:17already taken it over. So you're offering me a piece of
- 35:22land that has been already conquered?
- 35:27It's not very helpful. So you can imagine how troubling
- 35:31this was for Jeremiah. In fact, he even says it here at
- 35:35the at the end of verse 8. Then I knew that it was the word
- 35:38of the Lord. It's like this word was so
- 35:40unbelievable. I don't know if it was me or God
- 35:42until my cousin showed up to my jail cell.
- 35:45Can now I know this is God and his cousin obviously probably
- 35:50wanted to make some kind of money in the dire situation that
- 35:53the city was in. So he chooses to honor God's
- 35:55word as much as possible and give that right of redemption to
- 35:58a family member. So he offers it to the prophet,
- 36:03and the Lord says buy it. That's foolish.
- 36:06Humanly speaking, it makes zero sense.
- 36:12The thing that makes most sense is to keep as much money to
- 36:16yourself as possible, not to give it for something that you
- 36:19can't even enjoy, that might not ever be yours.
- 36:22Especially for Jeremiah. He knows that the people are
- 36:24going to go to exile for decades.
- 36:26There is no sense in this whole thing.
- 36:30But he's trusting God. So Scroll down to verse 12 and
- 36:34notice what happens. And I gave the deed of purchase
- 36:38to Baruch the son of Nariah, son of Massia, in the presence of
- 36:44Hanamel, my cousin, in the presence of the witnesses who
- 36:47signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all the
- 36:51Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard.
- 36:53I charge Baruch in their presence, saying, Thus says the
- 36:57Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, take these deeds, both
- 37:01the sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in
- 37:05an earthenware vessel, that they may last for a long time.
- 37:08For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, houses and
- 37:13fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.
- 37:17Do you see what he's saying here, Jeremiah?
- 37:23I want there to be witnesses of this truth.
- 37:28You're buying a piece of property because you believe
- 37:31what I have told you to say to everyone, that although they are
- 37:34going to be removed from this land, they will one day return.
- 37:41That's how much God wanted to drill into the hearts of these
- 37:44people, even in their discipline, that He still has a
- 37:48hope for them, a future for them.
- 37:51It's not going to remain this way.
- 37:54There are too many covenants made, promises made over and
- 37:59over again for God to to break them.
- 38:05God is trying to say here in another sense, I have not
- 38:08forgotten, and I want to put a down payment on my promise now.
- 38:13Even in a text like this, there are wonderful practical,
- 38:16personal lessons. Here's the first thing that we
- 38:19can take from this in order for our message to the skeptic, to
- 38:26the compromising, to the unbeliever to be more
- 38:29persuasive, we must be willing to practice what we preach.
- 38:34Up to this point, Jeremiah has been saying God is going to
- 38:37bring you back. God is going to take you away,
- 38:39but he will in his grace bring you back.
- 38:44And that's, it's as though the Lord says, I, I want you now,
- 38:46Jeremiah, to actually live out that message.
- 38:50You've been preaching it. Now I want you to prove it.
- 38:54I want you to show your audience that you believe what you're
- 38:56saying from the pulpit. So buy the land.
- 39:01Buy it. And he did.
- 39:08If you were not allowed to say a word for a few weeks, maybe
- 39:12months, your family, your friends, people who know you,
- 39:19watching you, will they be able to conclude this person serves
- 39:24God? Would they be able to even say
- 39:27this person lives for eternity? The proclaimed word is vital.
- 39:35God uses it to win souls. God uses it to transmit His
- 39:39truth. But what is necessary is that
- 39:43whatever is proclaimed is backed up with practice, is performed.
- 39:51And so Jeremiah, prove it. Let people see where your money
- 39:57goes. Let people see that you actually
- 40:00trust in the word that I give to you to give to them.
- 40:02And there were witnesses there. This was a public act.
- 40:09But the second thing here to be reminded of is that the
- 40:12Christian life is very much about making events invest
- 40:16investments that don't make sense to the world around us.
- 40:21You got to remember the context this looks.
- 40:24Foolish. Why are you purchasing land?
- 40:29You're never going to know it. In fact, whenever an exile like
- 40:32this would take place, the revival of a nation was
- 40:38miraculous if it ever happened. Unlikely.
- 40:43And yet Jeremiah is showing something here by way of
- 40:47principle, though it may not look like this is the best way
- 40:53to utilize your time, your energy, and your resources.
- 40:56God said it. So I'm going to show that it's
- 40:58worth it. And that's what you and I do as
- 41:01believers, day in and day out. The people that know you may
- 41:07look at you and say, what are you doing?
- 41:09You only have one life, Use it well, live it up.
- 41:12Why are you spending your Friday nights like that?
- 41:14Why are you spending your money like that?
- 41:17Why do you even waste your mornings like that?
- 41:19There's much more that you can do with that hour or 20 minutes
- 41:22or 30 minutes that you spend in your room talking to God and
- 41:26knowing His Word. And this is a miniature
- 41:31illustration found. Whatever we are called to invest
- 41:36in, it's in alignment with God's Word is never in vain.
- 41:41God always vindicates us. Those who watch us may mock us,
- 41:47they may never understand, but Jeremiah shows here that it's
- 41:52always worth it. And this also may give us
- 41:56insight to why he decided to stay back instead of going into
- 42:00Babylon. I believe Jeremiah's heart was
- 42:03so much for the people that he chose to remain as a physical
- 42:12demonstration and message of hope.
- 42:16I'm, I'm going to choose to plant my feet here, even though
- 42:18there's nothing left for me really, so that the Exiles and
- 42:22even the remnant here would be constantly reminded that there
- 42:25is a future. I'm not going to, I'm not going
- 42:29to go on and indirectly communicate that this place is
- 42:33over with. I'm going to stay here.
- 42:37Now, what I love about this too, is that Jeremiah had the choice
- 42:41to say Daniel didn't, right? Did Ezekiel have a choice?
- 42:45No, they didn't. You know, how God works in each
- 42:49of His servants is so amazing. And God didn't love Daniel or
- 42:54Ezekiel less than Jeremiah because He gave Jeremiah the
- 42:56ability to remain and the others no choice.
- 43:03Be careful of comparing God's dealings in your life, what He
- 43:08gives to others and what He doesn't give to you, what He
- 43:10gives to you and what He doesn't give to others as a sign of the
- 43:13measure of His love or affection.
- 43:18God is incredibly wise and He knows what is beneficial for you
- 43:25in terms of openings and Closings.
- 43:29As much as you might want that gift that you see somebody else
- 43:32operating in, God may know you way better than you know
- 43:37yourself. He does know you way better than
- 43:40you know yourself, and He knows how that gift can actually crush
- 43:43you instead of bless you. He just knows.
- 43:48And I was thinking about that, you know, what would it have
- 43:51been like for Daniel, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah to be all in one
- 43:55place? But the Lord knows how to
- 44:00distribute His resources. He knows how to position His
- 44:04servants well, and He doesn't owe us an explanation.
- 44:10Let's read the last verses of our study here.
- 44:14Second Kings 25. Let's look at verse 18.
- 44:22And the captain of the guard took Soraya, the chief priest,
- 44:26and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the
- 44:29threshold. And from the city he took an
- 44:32officer who had been in command of the men of war, and five men
- 44:35of the King's council who were found in the city, and the
- 44:38secretary of the commander of the army who mustered the people
- 44:40of the land, and 60 men of the people of the land who were
- 44:44found in the city. So here are the notable leaders
- 44:48that remain. They're collected.
- 44:51And notice what happens in verse 20.
- 44:54And Nebu Zeradan, the captain of the guard, took them and brought
- 44:57them to the king of Babylon at Ribla.
- 44:59And the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death
- 45:03at Ribla in the land of Hamas. And here's the most sobering
- 45:08part of this section of Scripture.
- 45:10So Judah was taken into exile out of its land.
- 45:20You would think that this is where Second Kings would end,
- 45:24but you are well aware that there are still a few verses
- 45:26that remain. We will touch on these verses in
- 45:30next week's final study of this book, But for now, I want us to
- 45:37just step back and to really take in some of these truths
- 45:40that were explained to ask God to make them real in our lives.
- 45:44Can we do that? Lord, we thank you for this
- 45:47study. And we ask, oh God, that these
- 45:59truths would come alive in each of us in a way that actually
- 46:07changes things. Lord, for every person here who
- 46:16desires to serve you wholeheartedly in these very
- 46:23turbulent moments in our culture, even for the church,
- 46:30may we always remember you're watching.
- 46:34I and Lord, what you said of the disciples, we wish you would say
- 46:38to us, You are those who have stayed with me in my trials.
- 46:44And Lord, give each of us the wisdom to know when to remain
- 46:47and stay and when to pick up and go.
- 46:50But Lord, would you please inspire loyalty in each of us
- 46:56tonight? Give up so quickly to not be
- 47:00frustrated to the point of quitting.
- 47:05Oh, Lord, we even see here a great contrast between the
- 47:10Babylonians and their treatment of Jeremiah and the truth and
- 47:14the people of God who should have known better.
- 47:17Thank you for the reminder that it's possible even for those who
- 47:20are walking with Christ to have a dimmed light.
- 47:26Lord, we pray that you would add more fuel to the flame in our
- 47:29hearts and that what we do and how we act and respond would
- 47:35burn brighter and would back up what we say.
- 47:40Thank you for these practical realities.
- 47:43Thank you for the wisdom of this text.
- 47:46Thank you, O God, for the glory of your word.
- 47:49Captivate us again lest we reverse and go back to a place
- 47:54that you brought us out of. Keep your glory before our face
- 48:00every day and every night in Jesus name, Amen.
- 48:03Amen. If you want to stay seated and
- 48:06pray and speak to the Lord, confess, rejoice, you can do
- 48:12that. If you want to stand and you
- 48:13want to sing, you're free to do that as well.
- 48:20But let's just take our time in worshipping Him.
