- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly. The podcast that keeps you up to date with all the
- 0:06money, business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once
- 0:10in their lives, and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me
- 0:14in. I love the art that you're wearing today. Thanks, I'm channeling very 7T's vibes.
- 0:20Yeah, it's good. It's almost festival-esque. Yeah. This one is going to Glastonbury.
- 0:25Really, really fun. It's been happening here everywhere I go. Yoga, Pilates, walk here
- 0:31on the street. People are like, oh, Glastonbury, that's Glastonbury. Yeah.
- 0:35It looks insane though. It looks so big. I know. So many people. I always thought it was something
- 0:41I wanted to go to. It was always on my list of to-dos. Yeah. But I don't know if I could handle
- 0:46a five-day festival. Have you seen the crowds as well? The crowds at Alton John? I was like,
- 0:52imagine needing to go pee. Oh, you couldn't. You'd crouch down and go on the floor shortly.
- 0:58Yuck. Oh, gosh. That's such a adult. Imagine having to go pee. You're not like, imagine enjoying
- 1:06the music at Alton John when you're like the best artist in the world. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:12So I've got to buy and to pick with you stuff. Oh, gosh. Yeah, what kind of thing? I also hate that
- 1:17saying I've got to bone to pet with you. I don't even get where it comes from. I don't know,
- 1:20maybe it's like when people were so cavemen, woman e-bibes and they had to like pet bones and eat
- 1:26them or something. You know, like I want to pick a bone with you. Let's eat together. Or like,
- 1:31maybe it's like, excuse me. Yeah. And I'm picking your bone. I don't know. Anyway, what is happening?
- 1:38So there's been some money spent on the care card again. Sorry, sorry, Mum from accounts.
- 1:43I love that you're bringing this up in a public forum. No backing away.
- 1:51I don't know what one you're talking about. The other one?
- 1:55Oh, yes. How much was it? 150 bucks. Okay. Yes. So that last weekend, I was sitting at home,
- 2:06I needed a weekend to myself and I had no money to speak but be my social battery was dead.
- 2:11You bought a movie for 150 dollars? Wait, geez. So I made myself nachos. I was watching
- 2:16bridesmaids on the couch by myself and then I decided to reactivate my hinge.
- 2:22Anyway, I was swiping. Oh my god. And then we had through about 15, quite good-looking men,
- 2:27I must say. And then I got a pop-up saying, you must upgrade to keep swiping. And I was like,
- 2:34oh, no, no, no, no, I'm not going to go. I'm going to wear that chick that pays for the app.
- 2:38So I didn't. And then like, I'll go through the movie. I was like, I think maybe I invested my
- 2:44dating line. Oh my god. And then you became that chick that paid $150. Yes, definitely.
- 2:50And I accidentally put it on the curved card. So I'll have to transfer back for that.
- 2:53I was like, Apple was like, surely that's some kind of like laptop charger or something. Oh my god.
- 3:00Dan, I totally could have got that through as well. Yeah, what have been so
- 3:03many of it came through as hinge? $100 for hinge. I would have been like, oh my gosh.
- 3:09I lane. So that slums our accountant. Can you imagine? She messages you as well when there's
- 3:14a random thing. I know. I think what's this? Oh, just telling her to transfer.
- 3:18Yes, yeah. And I'm a bit so funny. Oh my god, that's funny.
- 3:22Anyway, the curve weekly. In any way, finance chat. Yes, you always get like so caught up in
- 3:29other chat. I know. Surprisingly we've got so much to talk about considering we see each
- 3:32time every day. I know. I know. But then you think about people who've been on radio shows or whatever.
- 3:39I mean, hey, missionary, you've been talking by the way, not comparing us to them. I'm saying,
- 3:43wow, okay. But I mean, they've been on a radio show together for 15 years. I mean, how would they
- 3:49have anything to talk about? It's kind of the more you hang out, the more you have to talk about.
- 3:53Maybe we just don't talk when we hang out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll just say we're productive.
- 3:58So I thought it was good to start with kind of a six month chicken. So we're kind of halfway
- 4:05through the year now, which geez, take half a leaf. And so I thought we kind of do a halfway
- 4:11chicken. Yeah, not with years tracking. Love that. So the ESM P500 is up 14%. So this is sorry,
- 4:19just to clarify. Yeah. So we're talking about when you say it's up 14% is that comparatively
- 4:24to the start of the year. So you're you're taking the price that the market is at today.
- 4:30And you're comparing that to six months ago. So if you're like, if it's this year, then you're
- 4:36comparing it to a year ago, if you're like, you know, this two years, it's two years ago. So you're
- 4:42taking it. Sorry, I'm sick. It's not covered, hopefully. You're taking the price of the market
- 4:49today. And you're comparing it with the end of December. Okay. So the market is up 14%.
- 4:55The ESM P500 is up 14%. Right. So does that mean that if my portfolio is up around 40%.
- 5:02You're out performing the market. Yes. Hold on. Moly. That's quite cool. Depends what you're
- 5:09investing though, because the NASDAQ, which is the more growth focused index. And that's on
- 5:14with lots of tech companies. Lots of tech companies. Yeah. That's up 37% this year. Oh,
- 5:20because I think I had an investor in a few tech companies. But that's incredible considering
- 5:25on a baby investor. Or are we talking about the market? I was incredible. Both were incredible.
- 5:30You and the markets. No, but it's like the fact that the market's up 37% this year. I reckon it's
- 5:36also a chat GBTP, GPT. Well, it's because we had a shock last year. So the markets fell
- 5:44at the end of December. It was, it was struggling. Yeah. It was low. And then now it's rebounded
- 5:49strongly. But I just want to take a second to say for anyone who panics when the market goes down.
- 5:56Exactly. You haven't got to take a chill pill. Unless you need that money, which you shouldn't
- 6:01be investing it really anyway, should you actually need to be taking it out quickly? This is like a
- 6:07bloody roller coaster. Totally. And this is up. It's down. It's down. There's kind of two things I
- 6:11think also from that we can take away from this, because the Australian market is up 2% and the
- 6:17New Zealand markets flat. So you can see the difference between different countries and how they
- 6:24all right. Wait, hold on. So you're saying the US stock market is up 14%. Yeah. The Nasdex up 37.
- 6:32Australia's up to and New Zealand is flat. Crazy to think Australia and New Zealand are kind of
- 6:38just like ho-harm. Yes. And yet the States is absolutely booming. Yeah. But then last year,
- 6:43the US stock market fell a lot and New Zealand Australia didn't do much. So it's kind of,
- 6:48I want to have I want to have a little piece of all the pies around the world. But if some people
- 6:52don't like volatility, then that's when diversification is really good. If I volatility just mean,
- 6:57you know, when prices go up and down. And so does that mean if you were looking at your portfolio,
- 7:00so say you've invested in shares or hatch or whatever online and you've picked a few stocks?
- 7:05It would be quite clever to look at where those stocks or companies are listed, i.e.
- 7:10If it's Microsoft, is that on the Nasdex i.e. One tick for America? Yeah. Is one on the Australian
- 7:18stock exchange i.e. one tick for Australia? Like just having a quick scan over what even
- 7:22invested in what countries those companies are like in terms of the region? Definitely. And it also
- 7:29goes to show like different sectors perform different ways as well. So this is just why
- 7:33your diversification is key. But also the other thing to learn from this is that
- 7:39this is why we talk about, you know, taking that long-term view, you know, not being consumed by what's
- 7:45happening in the day-to-day movements of the markets all the year-to-year movements of the market
- 7:50to take that fire to you. Yeah. Because it's like you would have had a panic attack last year
- 7:55and you'd be celebrating this year. You were just the stress, the financial stress. No one needs it
- 8:00and they're like, we've got enough uncertainties. We're in stress and other parts of our lives.
- 8:04Just leave the stock market beta to go up and down. If you're invested in 2020 and kind of shut your
- 8:10eyes and then woken up today, you'd be like, what happened? Oh, my stocks are up. I don't care.
- 8:15You don't have to. Yeah, you kind of need to put it in there and have a net. Yeah.
- 8:21But still listen to the curve weekly. You see. And still we just can't use our other still learn.
- 8:27There was actually a really good saying that a really great investor once said that I remember and he
- 8:33said, I only invest in companies that I would be happy to go and live on a desert island and come
- 8:40back and be happy to still on. And like over five years. And I was like, that's such a good
- 8:45way to think about it. If you invested your money and then had to go away with desert island,
- 8:48had no idea what was going on, you want to be confident when you come back from that desert
- 8:52island in five, ten years time. So tell Wilson moment. Yeah. If we're Tom Hanks, stranded. I love
- 9:00that. The Wilson strategy. We just coined that up there. I think I know I sound like just a
- 9:06crazy feminist, but I would really love to think of a fine man for that. Yeah, like Willow.
- 9:11Yeah, the Willow strategy. Willow, why is it that? Well, so the Wilson.
- 9:16Yeah, I was like, oh, I got one last thing. What else has been happening in the market?
- 9:21So we've had a bit of noise and stuff going on with Bitcoin. So remember Bitcoin was up at about
- 9:29$64,000 US dollars in November 21. So that was its peak. And I do have you
- 9:34earned a whole bit coin. Yeah. You'd be happy then. But oh, wait, what's it worth now? So then
- 9:40it fell to $16,000. That is so unbelievable. Yeah. Shit. Imagine how gutted you'd be
- 9:46at diversified. Yeah, well, a year later. So it fell to $16,000 a year later in November
- 9:52between the two. And now it's had a resurgence. So it's back up to $31,000. I can't
- 10:00I wish we'd invested more when it was low. Well, that's what I say by low sell high. We do
- 10:05we. I thought we said don't do that. But like if you are. No, but it's just more. Yeah,
- 10:10if you're going, if everyone's panicking, that's kind of when you should be investing.
- 10:15I believe Bitcoin will be around. I don't know what it will look like. I would like us to
- 10:20invest when it's low again. When it has the next like, oh, God, another 10 banks have collapsed.
- 10:25Let's get in there. Oh, no, that's the opposite. And this is why, yes, it had your real
- 10:33resurgence once banks were collapsing. Then it had all that inquiry regulation, the securities
- 10:41and exchange commission from the US was looking at it. There's lots of companies that were being
- 10:45investigated and it fell a bit. But I think the fact that it's up 90% this year just shows
- 10:53its resiliency. And I think this just shows that the scandals they haven't left too much of a
- 10:58dent. And I think it shows, I don't know, I'm I'm becoming more. Oh, she takes while to get on
- 11:04board. But when she gets on board guys, it's been through so much. It's kind of like it's been
- 11:11kicked when it's been down. It keeps coming back up. It's like those games. They just pop up
- 11:16somewhere else. Fuck off. Anyway, that's what I feel like when I think of Bitcoin. Fuck off.
- 11:23Just keep coming back, which shows you know what? Maybe she's on board. She is on board everyone.
- 11:30But yeah, so it's kind of, I think there's a lot of people there saying, I told you so. I knew
- 11:35it would come back. And yeah, I think after everything it's been through, I mean, still very
- 11:40risky investment. But the fact that it's still up 90% this year is quite remarkable. Yeah.
- 11:46And so there's been also a bit of news in the health care space. So we're on tech talk.
- 11:52We are on tech talk when it viral recently. With her. With my interest rates. With interest rates.
- 11:59You're just like, your friends going viral with their skin care and their dating lives.
- 12:02And I'm going viral for interest rates. Whoa, it sums up my life.
- 12:06The next month was like, I can't believe you've told you about, you know, how much you're
- 12:09paying on your mortgage. And it's like, actually quite cool to see people first. Are you being so
- 12:14honest about it? Because I think it means other people have something to compare their own
- 12:17situations to. But technically, we were viral. She also said, isn't tech talk just for dancing?
- 12:24And I was like, oh gosh, stop the boomer. Yeah, I like this. It's a serious year time today.
- 12:31So for those who aren't familiar with tech talk. So there's a craze that has gone viral on tech
- 12:39talk. Well, it's actually a drug and it's a weight loss drug. And I'm going to butcher the name,
- 12:44but it's ozim, ozim pick. And it's actually diabetes medication. But a lot of people on tech talk
- 12:52using it to lose weight or using different varieties of it or
- 12:58drugs that are very similar to help them lose weight. And so people are trying to get this drug.
- 13:04It's gone crazy for uses that it's not actually supposed to be used for. It's only supposed to
- 13:09be for people who type to diabetes. So it's gone. Absolutely bananas. And the company that owns
- 13:16ozim pick is called Nova Nordic Nordisk. Oh my gosh. You really make it. I really
- 13:22yourself. We just call it Nova. Anyway, so it's still on the London Stock Exchange. It's a
- 13:26Denmark company and it's worth about 300 billion dollars. But it's cheaper. It's up 43% of the
- 13:32last 12 months. And this weight loss drug has been one of the game changes for it. It's crazy.
- 13:39And there's a lot of other healthcare companies now trying to race to find a similar
- 13:44come on. So it's probably well, it's yeah, it's just kind of I guess this new space where
- 13:51companies are seeing how interested and how in demand, you know, this weight loss drug is.
- 13:58I know, which is quite scary. If you've got like also, did you get people that was going to make
- 14:02me annoyed? Yeah. Just because I just I'm so sick of being told I need to lose weight or thinking
- 14:07I need to based on what the world tells me is beautiful and actually so sick of it. I mean,
- 14:13I think it is good for people with diabetes like we're taking in the right dosage and the I don't
- 14:17know when things like this go mainstream and are used for what they're not actually supposed to be
- 14:20used for. That's when it gets into trouble. Yeah. But it just goes to show a lot of us could have
- 14:25been sitting there on TikTok seeing this craze and being like, Hey, is that owned by a public
- 14:31elusive company? Can I can I benefit from buying shoes in it? You know, oh my gosh, that's a really
- 14:37good point because there's so many companies that market on TikTok. Totally. Whether it's the
- 14:41random purple toothpaste that apparently doesn't oh my gosh, I see that everywhere.
- 14:46I got marketed this annoying green tea face mask thing on your border and they put it on and it
- 14:52was like, wow, amazing. Like, you know, when people close up on black kids coming out and they
- 14:56like squiggle out, amazing. And I just thought this looks so fun. So I bought it and it arrived
- 15:02and all I see it looks like a fake product. There's not even an ingredients list on it or anything.
- 15:07And I used to put a tiny bit on it didn't even go what it looked like in the ads. And I just
- 15:12thought, what a waste of money. And I wonder how many suckers have bought this as well. But a great
- 15:16idea, look and do it if it actually is doing well. Totally. And if you keep seeing it come up and
- 15:21up like more and more, more people are buying it. It's a craze, you know, that's got a flow into
- 15:26revenue eventually. Totally. So yeah. And so they've made the only three billion dollars off this drug
- 15:32in the first three months of this year. So yeah, it's a lot of money. Yeah, it's a lot of
- 15:35healthcare, other healthcare companies scrambling to try and find, you know, come up with this similar
- 15:39product. So healthcare companies doing particularly well. Also, some people may have seen in the news
- 15:46the coup in Russia. And you might think, how is that related to market's work?
- 15:51So the coup in Russia. Oh gosh. Oh my gosh. I was out with a friend and she got a text
- 15:58from another friend and she was like, oh my gosh, if you see what's happening in Russia.
- 16:02Oh my gosh. So we quickly, we turned on the TV and we were like, oh my gosh. So the fighters
- 16:08that were fighting the Ukraine got pissed off that they weren't being given enough support and
- 16:13resources. So they turned on Russia itself and on Putin and encroached on him and was attacking him
- 16:21and was like, so it was a civil war, civil unrest. So within Russia. So the kind of
- 16:26and so on. Yeah, we're going against Putin. Yes. So it was an uprising, uprising. Any run thought,
- 16:31oh my god, this is the war's over. You know, they're going to get Putin. Anyway, they came to an
- 16:35agreement. It was all a bit of a bit of nothingness. Anyway, it was quite scary because, you know,
- 16:43markets hate uncertainty and what this meant was, oh gosh, are we going to have a similar situation
- 16:50to last time when the war broke out where oil prices spiked that leads to inflation, all of
- 16:56that kind of stuff. So markets are a bit on edge, but it was all kind of a bit of a bit of a
- 17:01nothing. But if this does get worse and, you know, it does lead to Russia restricting oil again,
- 17:09then that can keep inflation high, which means it's just right to get it. Yeah. So I'm like, I just
- 17:13want to get a new story. I'm like, sorry, but it's just like, I'm just so sick of that. I know,
- 17:20but it's so ingrained in the stock market and in companies and in economies, inflation
- 17:26is just right. So it's like, every time I feel like, no, it's fine. I know that you need set.
- 17:31But it's just something to watch. When you're watching the news and you see things like this play out,
- 17:34it's like, okay, shit, are we going to go back to having $140 oil prices? They're at $70 now.
- 17:41You know, are we going to head back to those levels? Because then that's going to impact inflation,
- 17:44all of that. So it's just something to be aware of. It hasn't yet, but I thought I'd just pull it
- 17:48out. And lastly, this was quite funny. Oh gosh. So I was like, we have very different sensitive
- 17:54people. Yeah. I'm like, how funny we're talking. So Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have called
- 18:01for a cage fight. No. An actual one. An actual one. Surely not. There's been tensions building
- 18:07between the Tesla CEO, so Elon Musk and the Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Because Mark Zuckerberg was
- 18:14like, you know what, we're going to create a rival social media platform. We're going to make
- 18:19Facebook amazing. And it's going to rival Twitter. And Elon Musk was like, kind of like, okay,
- 18:24cool. Let's see you do it. Kind of thing. And so it got to the point where they're calling each
- 18:30other out. And they have challenged each other to a little cage fight. I know. That is definitely a yarn.
- 18:38It's all white. I think it's a bit of both. But it happened before years ago. It was two airline
- 18:47CEOs, but they did challenge each other to an arm wrestle over something. I can't remember what
- 18:52the actual thing was that they were like, what did they do it? And they did it. Yeah. But quite
- 18:57funny. Okay. Imagine if UFC got onto this and was like, right, let's get Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg
- 19:04in for a cage fight. I'm sorry. Surely Elon would absolutely eat Mark alive. Yeah. I reckon it
- 19:09would be all like cocky. And so he wouldn't train. Whereas Mark would take it real seriously.
- 19:13It was so bright. And then he'd just be like, there's like ripped Connor McGregor type like.
- 19:19Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It just comes out of nowhere. That's quite funny. He's got like age on his side.
- 19:24He's only 39 and Elon Musk's 51. So natural ability. I'd be backing Elon. Yeah.
- 19:29But determination and like a, you know, over preparation. We're backing up.
- 19:34Quite funny. Can we get tickets if that goes? Oh gosh. I'd love to be there. Yeah. Is that weird?
- 19:41Yeah. That is quite weird, but quite, but quite fun. And lastly, let's finish with it. Would you
- 19:47rather? Okay. Go on. What is it? Would you rather? Love it. Or it already finds it funny.
- 19:54I say marry someone that was terrible at sex or marry someone who's terrible with money. Oh,
- 19:59terrible with money. Definitely. Really? Yeah. Because I would just take control of that situation.
- 20:05I'd bet my experience. I reckon terrible at sex and I'd be able to teach them how to be good at sex.
- 20:08No, absolutely not. I feel like sex is like an intuition. There needs to be more.
- 20:14You can't learn that. No, how much of a turn off is it when you're like,
- 20:17oh, a bit to the left. A bit to the right. I mean, like I'm all about communication,
- 20:21but if someone is terrible, I just way rather be. Okay. Imagine if you could not change them.
- 20:28I would still go with bad at money. Imagine being with someone that you are like in debt to your
- 20:34eyeballs because they're spending so much money. You can't afford to put your kids through school.
- 20:38You can't like all of that. No, I'd take all their cards away from them. I would.
- 20:41But you cannot change them. Yeah, I would not allow them to spend money and I would have them
- 20:46on strict instructions that like the bank can't let them have access to the money. They'd be
- 20:51treated like a 13-year-old child when it came to the bank account. I just feel like it would ruin
- 20:56a relationship. So would sex. So would bad sex. I'm so torn.
- 21:01This is like, oh, if you could not change, yeah, actually, imagine terrible sex.
- 21:06I have an open relationship. Yes. I never heard you say that and I never thought I would see
- 21:15the day this. She was like, feel like I'm in trouble. Yeah, I'm in trouble.
