- 0:00Speaker 1: Marks them all.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Mr.
- 0:01Speaker 1: New York.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Now three hours every weekday from 9 till noon on 710WOR. Well,
- 0:09Speaker 2: Roger Friedman, the great entertainment reporter, you can check out
- 0:13Speaker 2: his website. A lot of great stories there. Showbiz411. com. Showbiz411. com.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Roger Friedman, how you doing?
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm great. Good morning. How are you? Good.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hey, Ed Sheeran. Got to be the nicest guy in
- 0:29Speaker 2: the music business. What the hell is he doing with
- 0:32Speaker 2: Macklemore as an opening act?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Well, he didn't pick Macklemore. The promoter of the tour
- 0:41Speaker 1: picked Macklemore and picked a few other people to go
- 0:45Speaker 1: on the bill. And I don't think that Ed Sheeran
- 0:49Speaker 1: really understood what was going on. Macklemore really had his
- 0:54Speaker 1: only hits about in 2011 and 2012. Yeah. It's a long,
- 0:58Speaker 1: long time ago. And more recently, I mean, he had
- 1:02Speaker 1: no career at all. And more recently, he kind of
- 1:07Speaker 1: revived himself by turning into this free Palestine guy. And
- 1:13Speaker 1: he became very vehemently anti-Israel. And we didn't really hear
- 1:18Speaker 1: about it because it really sort of reached New York.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It wasn't a big deal. He lives in Seattle. And,
- 1:24Speaker 1: you know, nobody really cared about him. But then he
- 1:26Speaker 1: played two shows with Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: suddenly everyone knew about it, because when you come to
- 1:36Speaker 1: New York, you know, that's the stage for everything. And
- 1:41Speaker 1: Ed Sheeran was smart. He said, the promoter said, this
- 1:45Speaker 1: is not going to work out. He cannot go on
- 1:47Speaker 1: to do eight more shows at stadiums. These stadiums are 60,000,
- 1:53Speaker 1: 70,000 people. It's not like, you know, just even Madison
- 1:55Speaker 1: Square Garden. They're huge. They're huge. And you're going to
- 2:01Speaker 1: have such a big part of the audience offended by
- 2:04Speaker 1: walking into a political rally that they didn't expect. Now,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's not like Macklemore can't have his point of view.
- 2:11Speaker 1: He can, but he has to do it. He has
- 2:14Speaker 1: to tell people that's what it's going to be when
- 2:16Speaker 1: they come to the show. And his host was Ed Sheeran,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and he wasn't really respecting his host. So now it's
- 2:26Speaker 1: very interesting what's happened, isn't it? You know, Robert Kraft,
- 2:30Speaker 1: who owns Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots play, said, well,
- 2:34Speaker 1: you can't come to my stadium that way. And he
- 2:38Speaker 1: got the other NFL owners to say the same thing
- 2:41Speaker 1: about their stadiums. So, of course, McLemore was dropped from
- 2:45Speaker 1: the tour. Now everyone's shouting, oh, freedom of speech, all this.
- 2:48Speaker 1: This is ridiculous. If Macklemore wants to have his own concerts,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm sure he has plenty of places where he can
- 2:55Speaker 1: have them. And people will come, and if they agree
- 2:58Speaker 1: with him, that's great. But this was a wrong look
- 3:02Speaker 1: for Ed Sheeran. And I feel bad for Ed Sheeran
- 3:05Speaker 1: that he's getting blamed for this now. He shouldn't be.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's a big mistake because he's a nice guy, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: I don't think he doesn't agree with any of this. Um,
- 3:16Speaker 1: of course now he and Robert Kraft are each giving
- 3:19Speaker 1: $ 2 million to, uh, Gaza relief, which is a good thing.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Gaza relief is a good thing. Nobody disagreed with that. And, uh,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and Macklemore is giving a million dollars to Gaza relief.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So $ 5 million, although no one really knows what Gaza relief,
- 3:36Speaker 1: where it's going to go, it's going to go to
- 3:37Speaker 1: the red cross or I don't know who's working on there,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but you know, but obviously Gaza needs the relief, but, um,
- 3:45Speaker 1: Macklemore is not really apologizing for anything he says. And
- 3:53Speaker 1: it's unfortunate for Ed Sheeran.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but all these guys, even Bruce Springsteen, it's a concert.
- 3:59Speaker 2: You're supposed to sing, play music. That's it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But you know going into a Bruce Springsteen show how
- 4:08Speaker 1: he feels about Trump.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, forget Trump. Forget Trump. If you're doing a concert
- 4:13Speaker 2: and in between two songs, You said to the audience,
- 4:15Speaker 2: you know, I want to talk about the Fed increasing
- 4:17Speaker 2: the interest rate a quarter. Nobody wants to hear this.
- 4:20Speaker 2: No politics. It doesn't matter whether it's Trump or whether
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's economic. You're there to sing. Just sing.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But with artists, you know going in, that's who you're
- 4:32Speaker 1: coming to. Bruce Springsteen doesn't have opening acts. With Ed Sheeran,
- 4:37Speaker 1: you go expecting a fun time, right? You just expect
- 4:41Speaker 1: a nonpolitical good time. Uh, he's playing his guitar and
- 4:45Speaker 1: telling jokes and he's, you know, very red and, uh,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you know, I mean, red hair and, uh, and, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: that's it. So you don't expect to someone, you don't
- 4:56Speaker 1: expect to suddenly be in a free Palestine rally.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Uh, wait, go back to that for a minute. Bruce
- 5:00Speaker 2: Springsteen doesn't have an opening act.
- 5:03Speaker 1: No, Bruce Springsteen has no opening. Really?
- 5:05Speaker 2: I thought you had to have one. Don't you need
- 5:07Speaker 2: it to warm up the audience?
- 5:09Speaker 1: No, he plays for three or four hours by himself.
- 5:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:13Speaker 1: E Street Band, enough for anybody, Mark.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And what is that play, Three Hours? That's a little,
- 5:19Speaker 2: you think Trump has an ego? A guy that plays
- 5:21Speaker 2: a three-hour concert, that's an ego.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I think he, well, he plays it because the audience
- 5:26Speaker 1: wants it. We love Bruce Springsteen, and I could take
- 5:29Speaker 1: a five-hour concert. Oh, my God. They're getting shorter now
- 5:33Speaker 1: as he gets older. Oh, I just read this is
- 5:37Speaker 1: terrible news. Oh, I just saw some terrible news on
- 5:39Speaker 1: the wire. Duncan Sheik. who was the great singer-songwriter who
- 5:46Speaker 1: wrote Spring Awakening on Broadway. And he also had a
- 5:51Speaker 1: great single called Barely Breathing Has Passed Away. That's very sad.
- 5:57Speaker 2: How old is he? Wasn't that old?
- 6:00Speaker 1: I would say he's in his 50s. Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 2: All right. That's terrible. Hey, your buddy Woody Allen, is
- 6:08Speaker 2: this true? He's making a new movie at 91? He's 56,
- 6:10Speaker 2: Duncan Sheep.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Um, yes. Woody Allen is going to be 91 on
- 6:18Speaker 1: November 30th. And in the meantime, uh, he's about to
- 6:23Speaker 1: start shooting a movie October 5th in Madrid. It's his
- 6:27Speaker 1: 51st movie. And right now the working title is, is Madrid.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And it's set in Spain where he's had a couple
- 6:35Speaker 1: of really cool movies. You know, he had Vicky Cristina Barcelona,
- 6:38Speaker 1: which was one, a lot of Oscars. It was a
- 6:41Speaker 1: big hit. Um, We don't know what this one's about,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but his last film, Coupe de Chance, was shot in
- 6:50Speaker 1: France and was all in French, in fact. Actually, I
- 6:55Speaker 1: don't know if you've seen it, but you should rent it.
- 6:57Speaker 1: It has a great twist. It's a wonderful film. Woody's
- 7:02Speaker 1: still got it. He had a novel that came out
- 7:07Speaker 1: last year, and he has a second novel that's coming
- 7:11Speaker 1: out next year. that he's finished, and he's also got
- 7:14Speaker 1: a play that he's finished. So he's getting a lot done.
- 7:19Speaker 1: While we're sitting around talking on the radio, Woody Allen
- 7:22Speaker 1: is busy at his manual typewriter writing all these things.
- 7:25Speaker 2: And his greatest accomplishment ever is you could get a
- 7:28Speaker 2: picture of him in 1963 on the Jack Parr Show
- 7:32Speaker 2: and today at 91, and he looks exactly the same.
- 7:35Speaker 2: This guy looks exactly the same. No difference. How is
- 7:39Speaker 2: that possible? Clean living? Well.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah, really clean living. But, you know, it's funny because
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's ironic, right? Because now the Carnegie Deli, which you
- 7:49Speaker 1: hosted the other day, you were there, has reopened and
- 7:53Speaker 1: have a Broadway Danny Rose sandwich, which is named for
- 7:56Speaker 1: the famous movie, right? And the movie Broadway Danny Rose
- 8:01Speaker 1: from 1985 took place at the original Carnegie Deli. You know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: all the great comics sitting around telling their stories about
- 8:08Speaker 1: Broadway Danny Rose. And it's all pastrami, you know, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: corned beef, which we love. But Woody doesn't eat any
- 8:15Speaker 1: of that.
- 8:16Speaker 2: You know, I was talking the other day. This Carnegie,
- 8:18Speaker 2: the new Carnegie, is wonderful. But it's nothing like the
- 8:20Speaker 2: old Carnegie with the big, fat, surly waiters and the
- 8:25Speaker 2: comedian's table in front.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Go watch Broadway Danny Rose, the movie. You'll see the
- 8:29Speaker 2: old Carnegie in its prime. Broadway Danny Rose.
- 8:33Speaker 1: But isn't it nice? It's so nice to have the
- 8:35Speaker 1: sign back on 7th Avenue that says Carnegie Deli.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know, I love that.
- 8:41Speaker 2: The food's great. The sandwiches, the knish, the cheesecake, everything
- 8:45Speaker 2: is back. It's great.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Everything's great.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Have you been there yet? It's phenomenal.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I haven't been there yet, but I'll be there this weekend.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'm definitely going. I'm sure there are going to be
- 8:54Speaker 1: long lines. Yeah. But I actually wrote about it coming back.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I was actually almost the first person to write about
- 9:01Speaker 1: it on Showbiz 411. Because they dropped a little hint,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and I immediately wrote the story. I was so excited.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And I said to the publicist, are you going to
- 9:12Speaker 1: have a Broadway Danny Rose sandwich? She goes, I don't know.
- 9:14Speaker 1: She's so young, she doesn't know. I said, you better
- 9:17Speaker 1: ask them. So they've got it. Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Now, just for everybody listening, it's not where the old
- 9:22Speaker 2: Carnegie was. It's a block south of there. It's where
- 9:25Speaker 2: the stage deli was. Yeah.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Apparently, they didn't want to go. Which is actually
- 9:30Speaker 1: a nicer, it's nicer. It has a, you know, they have,
- 9:34Speaker 1: you know, enclosed glass front. It's a lot nicer than
- 9:37Speaker 1: the Carnegie Valley was.
- 9:39Speaker 2: That's a good point. Yeah, it's all windows, so it's
- 9:41Speaker 2: a lot of light. The old Carnegie had no windows
- 9:43Speaker 2: in the dining room.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah, no, the old Carnegie, you walked all the way
- 9:47Speaker 1: into the back, you know, into like a mysterious place
- 9:51Speaker 1: where you got a sandwich as tall as you were.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you still get that sandwich, but it's great. Well,
- 9:55Speaker 2: everybody read Roger Friedman's website, showbiz411. com.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I saw a great movie last night. Do you want
- 10:03Speaker 1: to hear one last thing? All right.

- 10:05Speaker 1: There's a Brad Pitt movie called Heart of the Beast.
- 10:08Speaker 1: It's opening next week on the 25th. Go see this movie.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I saw it last night. The critics loved it. I mean,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I've never seen a room Everyone was so surprised about
- 10:18Speaker 1: how terrific it is. It's a survivalist movie. It's Brad
- 10:21Speaker 1: Pitt and a dog, and the dog is going to
- 10:24Speaker 1: get nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
- 10:25Speaker 2: All right. Say the name again. Heart of the Beast?
- 10:29Speaker 1: Heart of the Beast.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Heart of the Beast. Everybody go see it. And check
