- 0:24Lisa Hopkins: Hey there, I hope that wherever you are, you are enjoying some downtime and some peace.
- 0:32Lisa Hopkins: I just wanted to come on tonight and share just a little something with you that might just shine some perspective on where you're at in this moment, or maybe with somebody that could use it.
- 0:49Lisa Hopkins: So I'm just going to share this little parable.
- 0:51Lisa Hopkins: It's from a collection called the Zen Monkey and the Lotus Flower by Tenpa Yeshe.
- 1:00Lisa Hopkins: And these are just parables, yeah.
- 1:06Lisa Hopkins: So I'm just going to share this with you.
- 1:08Lisa Hopkins: If you're somewhere where you can just close your eyes for a moment, go ahead and do that.
- 1:13Lisa Hopkins: It'll just take three or four minutes, and if not, that's okay too.
- 1:19Lisa Hopkins: What I've chosen to read is the Sunset and the Twilight In a remote monastery on top of a mountain.
- 1:30Lisa Hopkins: To read is the Sunset and the Twilight.
- 1:35Lisa Hopkins: In a remote monastery on top of a mountain lived a young monk named Shen.
- 1:39Lisa Hopkins: Shen was an eager student, but he struggled with a problem Every time he made a mistake or failed in his practice.
- 1:54Lisa Hopkins: He could not let it go.
- 1:55Lisa Hopkins: He dwelled on his disappointment and let it dominate his thoughts and emotions.
- 2:04Lisa Hopkins: One day, after a particularly difficult training session, shen was feeling especially down.
- 2:09Lisa Hopkins: His master, master Wang, noticed this and led Shen to a cliff overlooking the western sky.
- 2:15Lisa Hopkins: They sat together watching the sun slowly set, bathing the sky in colors of red and gold.
- 2:25Lisa Hopkins: The sky in colors of red and gold.
- 2:30Lisa Hopkins: What do you see?
- 2:32Lisa Hopkins: Shen asked Master Wong, I see a sunset.
- 2:38Lisa Hopkins: Master Shen replied and how does that make you feel?
- 2:47Lisa Hopkins: Continued Master Wong, I feel sadness, master.
- 2:49Lisa Hopkins: The day is ending and darkness will come, shen said.
- 2:53Lisa Hopkins: Master Wong nodded and said yes, sunset marks the end of the day and darkness will follow.
- 3:06Lisa Hopkins: But what comes after darkness, shen?
- 3:10Lisa Hopkins: Shen thought for a moment and then replied Dawn, master.
- 3:15Lisa Hopkins: That's right, shen.
- 3:19Lisa Hopkins: Master Wong said with a smile After darkness always comes dawn, the beginning of a new day.
- 3:27Lisa Hopkins: That is the natural cycle of the world, and so it is with our mistakes and failures, shen.
- 3:39Lisa Hopkins: Master Wong continued when we make a mistake, when we fail, it's like the sunset.
- 3:47Lisa Hopkins: A mistake.
- 3:52Lisa Hopkins: When we fail, it's like the sunset.
- 3:53Lisa Hopkins: It's an ending, yes, but it is also the beginning of something new.
- 3:57Lisa Hopkins: With every mistake, with every failure, we have the opportunity to learn and grow.
- 4:07Lisa Hopkins: We have the opportunity to make a new beginning.
- 4:14Lisa Hopkins: The darkness is only temporary.
- 4:21Lisa Hopkins: The dawn will always come.
- 4:29Lisa Hopkins: Shen sat looking at the now starry sky and let his master's words sink in.
- 4:36Lisa Hopkins: He now understood that failures and mistakes were just part of the learning process, part of the natural cycle of life.
- 4:53Lisa Hopkins: He could see them as opportunities for improvement and growth rather than end points.
- 5:02Lisa Hopkins: So, from that day on, every time Shen made a mistake or failed in his practice, he remembered the sunset and the dawn.
- 5:16Lisa Hopkins: He let go of the darkness, joyfully anticipating the new day that would come with the next sunrise.
- 5:34Lisa Hopkins: And so, my friends, I encourage you to take this little lesson and recognize how important it is to remember that there is always dawn after darkness, dawn after darkness, and that, even though it feels sometimes like an ending until it comes, another beginning will not dawn.
- 6:06Lisa Hopkins: It's the cycle of life.
- 6:09Lisa Hopkins: Let it go, give these things that you hold so deeply a little less weight and remember the simplicity of the sun rising and the sun setting, and take comfort in the regularity, in the fact that you can count on that, just as you can count on you breathing.
- 6:36Lisa Hopkins: I hope this helped you shift.
- 6:44Lisa Hopkins: I hope that this helps you recognize everything will be okay.
- 6:51Lisa Hopkins: I wish you love, light and all the joy that comes with the dawn.
- 7:01Lisa Hopkins: I'm Lisa Hopkins.
- 7:05Lisa Hopkins: Thanks so much for listening.
- 7:07Lisa Hopkins: Stay safe and healthy everyone and remember to live in the moment.
