- 0:04Welcome to Domer and Sons, a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:08I'm Matthew Rose, the Domer, and I'm joined by my two sons and co-hosts, William Rose.
- 0:14Hey, William.
- 0:14Hey, Dad.
- 0:16And Calvin Rose.
- 0:17Cal, what's up?
- 0:18Nothing much.
- 0:18How are you?
- 0:19I'm great.
- 0:20Today is Tuesday, September 8th, and this is episode two, our Wisconsin recap and Rice preview.
- 0:27We'll be joined later on the pod by Uncle Tony, Tony Fonseca, who will hand out game balls from the Wisconsin game and give us a Rice prediction.
- 0:36So boys, it's Tuesday.
- 0:38We got back from Lambeau yesterday.
- 0:41Yep.
- 0:42Had a pretty good time.
- 0:43Great time.
- 0:44Yeah.
- 0:44Yeah?
- 0:45Tell me about it.
- 0:45What was your favorite part of the trip?
- 0:47think my favorite part of the trip was seeing the uniforms, the Irish rushing out of the tunnel, and, Lambeau Field I thought was amazing.
- 0:56The stadium was great.
- 0:57We'll talk later about the field, but the stadium and the atmosphere was great.
- 1:01Yeah.
- 1:01What about the stadium itself did you enjoy?
- 1:03It was kind of, it was built higher up than Notre Dame.
- 1:06Yeah.
- 1:06We had to take an elevator to get to our seats, and, it was like a bowl.
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:10Mm-hmm.
- 1:11Yeah.
- 1:11Yeah It was pretty cool.
- 1:12And it seemed they tried to split the stadium in half, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, right?
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:17It worked pretty well.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:18It did work well.
- 1:19Cal, what about you?
- 1:19What did you enjoy most about the trip?
- 1:21The end, the alma mater, I thought that was cool.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:24Yeah, I agree.
- 1:24The r- the Green Bay jump, the Lambeau jump- The Lambeau jump after, that was pretty cool.
- 1:29And- They call that the leap.
- 1:31Oh.
- 1:31Lam- yeah, Lambeau leap, Cal.
- 1:34Okay.
- 1:36Just do your homework.
- 1:37It's okay.
- 1:38You enjoyed the leap at the end.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:39What else?
- 1:40And then, I think running out was really cool.
- 1:42But, The bus ride there was probably my favorite.
- 1:44Yeah, bus ride was pretty great.
- 1:46Pretty, pretty fun.
- 1:47You know, I don't know if you know this about our trips we usually win the bus ride.
- 1:52So before we even get off the bus, we've won.
- 1:55it's nice to clock a W before the game even starts.
- 1:58Yep.
- 1:59so one of the really cool things about Lambeau that I enjoyed was it felt almost like a European soccer stadium in the sense that it was in the middle of a residential area.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:10That was kinda wild how we got off the bus, we were going to look for some friends that we were gonna tailgate with- Yeah and we found their spot, and- It's houses houses were- Yeah everywhere right across the street from the stadium itself.
- 2:21Mm-hmm.
- 2:22Yeah.
- 2:22And I don't recall being in a football environment like that in the US where you're right smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
- 2:30Yeah, not even, South Bend's not even like that.
- 2:32You have the houses that are near the campus, but nothing that's like close to the stadium.
- 2:36Like, literally directly across the street- Yeah from the stadium.
- 2:39Well, there were houses, but there was like a kinda built out town that had, uh, other tourist stuff there.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:45Yeah, the, the little Titletown area was a- Yeah commercial area that was full of restaurants and bars and things like that, and that was, that was cool.
- 2:53But that's not as kinda authentic as- Yeah a residential neighborhood, right?
- 2:58Mm-hmm.
- 2:58No.
- 2:59Yeah, it was a pretty neat experience all around.
- 3:01I loved it.
- 3:02That was my first time at Lambeau.
- 3:03Cal, you mentioned the alma mater.
- 3:05Did you have any exception with the fact that the Wisconsin band- wouldn't stop playing?
- 3:11Sore losers, sore losers.
- 3:12I actually hated that part.
- 3:13Everybody started booing them.
- 3:15They deserved exactly that.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:17Second half we turned up.
- 3:19Yeah.
- 3:19First half was a little rocky.
- 3:20We'll, we'll talk about that in a second.
- 3:22Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 3:22Yeah, we'll talk about that in a second.
- 3:23Um, final score 41-13 Irish.
- 3:28It was 13-10 at halftime.
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:30So as you alluded to, Cal- 20- It was, uh- 28-3.
- 3:3428-3.
- 3:35Un- unfortunately we're quite familiar with 28-3, here in this household.
- 3:39But, and I'm sure Tony will remind us.
- 3:42That second half, completely different game.
- 3:45Finally the depth, of the Irish showed up and we were able to put it away very, very convincingly.
- 3:51Cal, let's talk about the game.
- 3:53Give us a offensive side of the ball recap.
- 3:56Our offense first half was super you know, shaky.
- 3:58A little iffy.
- 3:59I think...
- 4:01I don't think we were even supposed to have a touchdown that half.
- 4:03Maybe we would've scored one, but that muffed kick, uh, the little kickoff incident, h- that really just set us up.
- 4:10And, you know, the touchdown pass by CJ Carr honestly was very good to James Flanagan.
- 4:15It was a good play call.
- 4:16I mean- the, the RPO near the goal line is kinda like the Notre Dame special in the past two years.
- 4:20No, definitely.
- 4:21Remember Riley Leonard and Jayden Thomas, was it?
- 4:25They would spam that kind of like slant route and inside zone right on the goal line.
- 4:29I think the tight end rollout, when you k- It's kind of a curved route.
- 4:33I think that's scary'cause that's like pick six territory, but I think that if it's executed well it's definitely lethal.
- 4:39Yeah, definitely.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41and then, running the ball we had the little struggle in the first half.
- 4:44Their defensive line and their linebackers played great.
- 4:47Their entire defense played great, to be honest.
- 4:49They really gave us all their effort I should say.
- 4:51And then the second half came around, we were running the ball effectively towards the end, passing the ball very well.
- 4:57Yeah, Cal, how many how many three tight end sets did you see out there?
- 5:00Not a lot.
- 5:01It was a lot of two tight end sets and they were motioning them around.
- 5:04That's what I think when Cooper Flanagan was just on the field, it was normally just a pass, but you saw James Flanagan motioning in and out.
- 5:12Um- We saw regular formations that we've seen throughout the years.
- 5:16Yeah But the five wide, the gun empty five wide where they had the running back motion out to the sideline was definitely prevalent.
- 5:23Yeah, it was very effective.
- 5:24I, I loved it personally.
- 5:26I think that's very- Yeah, that was the most empty backfields looks I've can recall seeing from Notre Dame in a long, long time.
- 5:34To your point, William, it was unique and kind of refreshing.
- 5:38And Cal, the 12 personnel there where,, the last couple years we just haven't had been able to have two really strong blocking tight ends in the game.
- 5:47It wasn't s- basically been since Mayer.
- 5:50Actually, I think Mitchell Evans and then someone, uh, even Reardon I think.
- 5:54Uh, no, Cooper Flanagan and Reardon.
- 5:56This wasn't really- Reardon Cooper Flanagan.
- 5:57Yeah, but Reardon, I mean, I, my sense is Reardon, Reardon's a good blocking tight end, but not an elite blocking tight end.
- 6:02Not, not like these two.
- 6:03And I feel like we got two elite blocking tight ends.
- 6:06You know, Micah Gilbert, he played 62 snaps.
- 6:09So he missed out on two snaps for our offense the entire game.
- 6:13And he played great.
- 6:14He did.
- 6:14He had some good receptions, but Jordan Faizon I think was the star of the show.
- 6:20I think you'll hear about the game balls later.
- 6:22Spoiler alert, he's one of mine.
- 6:24He's super-duper shifty.
- 6:26We saw it.
- 6:26There was one catch where I think he lost yardage and just gained it back'cause he juked out these two defenders.
- 6:33And then- I think what's great about his shiftiness is he's also quick, so he can, like, kinda run behind guys and angle himself.
- 6:39I think we saw that on the one play where he cut across the middle.
- 6:42He, he wasn't, juking them out, he was changing directions with speed going up and down the field.
- 6:47Definitely.
- 6:48And then last thing I'm gonna say, Greathouse and Milen Graham, they got 30 and 16 snaps.
- 6:54I would like to see Greathouse be more involved in the offense.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:57I think we've talked about how if we get this playoff Greathouse, we're gonna get a great version of Jayden Greathouse, and probably an 1,000-yard receiver.
- 7:06He had one reception the entire game.
- 7:07It was on a curl.
- 7:08Yeah, how many targets did he have?
- 7:09Did he have two or three?
- 7:10I don't, I don't know if he even had a lot of targets.
- 7:13And then CJ Carr First half was not a good half for him.
- 7:17After the strip sack, I think we talked about it on the ride back, he was very, very, you know, first read I'm gonna throw- Conservative, yeah yeah.
- 7:26First read I'm gonna throw it.
- 7:27I don't really trust my offensive line.
- 7:28Second half, whatever happened in the locker room worked because he was stepping up, he was scanning the entire field, and that was crucial.
- 7:36And then lastly, our offensive line I thought it was good after the first half.
- 7:39Um, obviously Will Black, he's a sophomore but he's getting better with freshman- First career Yeah I mean, yeah, effectively a freshman.
- 7:48First career start.
- 7:50That, that edge rush he gave up in the first quarter, like you said Cal, obviously I think that shook up Carr a little bit'cause he came from his blind side.
- 7:57And what we had talked about earlier in the week about,"Hey, what we have to do, we have to protect 13." Well, that obviously didn't give a lot of confidence in the line for Carr initially.
- 8:07But like you said, came out at halftime and, I think everybody settled down but starting with Will Black which allowed then Carr to be a little bit more effective.
- 8:16And I will say one thing about the lack of deep shots.
- 8:19I think everybody's a little bit frustrated with that but- It's the safeties, right?
- 8:23Yeah It was the safeties.
- 8:24Yeah, two high safeties They were playing two high safeties.
- 8:26A lot of times when Wisconsin was playing outside man they were giving 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.
- 8:33Yeah So those curl routes Carr was using what the defense was giving him.
- 8:38And what was really nice for me personally about watching Carr is there was a couple times where last year Carr would've tried to make something out of nothing.
- 8:47Forced it, yeah Forced it Exactly Thrown an interception, you know, put it, put the ball at risk.
- 8:53This time he made the right reads, he checked down when he needed to check down, and once the play wasn't there and he didn't even have, the safety option open he just would throw it away.
- 9:05And that's to me a massive step from week one last year to this year.
- 9:11Or Definitely you know, what we saw in the USC game last year when he made a really bad turnover- Yeah that cost Notre Dame points, in the second quarter last year.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:19And then the last thing I'm gonna talk about, or I have two more things I wanna talk about real quick.
- 9:23Styles Prescod, he started the game at the right guard position and then, the first half, and then Sullivan Absher came in in the second half.
- 9:31I thought Absher did a very good job, so we'll see that.
- 9:34And then our running backs, um, Aneyas Williams, he had 20 carries for 90 yards.
- 9:40I think Notre Dame still thinks we're in this Jeremiah Love era where, we can just run the ball and it'll be effective even with two high safeties, and I just don't think that's there.
- 9:49But Nolan James Jr., effective a little bit in the run but more effective in the pass which is nice to see.
- 9:54And then even we even saw Keidron Young get in there a little But yeah, I think that's my view on the offense I kinda wanna return to the CJ Carr thing for a little bit.
- 10:02I think when people were talking about...
- 10:04I mean, I was blaming him too, but when CJ was not going through his progressions and throwing the curls, they were open.
- 10:11The thing about a curl route is once it's open, you have to throw it'cause if you don't throw it immediately, they're on it.
- 10:17So I think he was just nervous about getting hit and he...
- 10:21And with the curl route, you have to throw it immediately, so I think that's what was going on in the first half.
- 10:25No, I definitely agree with you.
- 10:27Um, yeah, I just think after this strip sack, like we said, he was a little scared, and that's perfectly fine.
- 10:32Everybody settled down, you know?
- 10:34Yeah Um, first game of the season, and I think sometimes we forget that, the other team wants to play competitive football.
- 10:40Yep You know?
- 10:41They're trying to win the game, too, and just because they had a really rough season last year doesn't mean that they're not looking to come out and, and try to get an upset.
- 10:49So, second half, completely different game.
- 10:51We were actually running the ball, running the ball much, much more effectively.
- 10:56Kudos to Wisconsin.
- 10:57They put up a heck of a fight early, and then over the course of time, just the quality and the number of bodies we can trot out there, and give us really quality reps showed up, and that's, in my view, what happened offensively.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11I'm sorry but three of nine from the third down marker is not good.
- 11:16No.
- 11:16We definitely need to change it.
- 11:18But on a bright spot, I thought the second half we didn't have a lot of third downs- Yeah because we were moving the ball- That's true effectively.
- 11:25So three of nine, that's mostly in the first half, maybe a couple in the second half.
- 11:29Yeah, I mean, I have some complaints, but not a lot.
- 11:34It's the first game and, get better over time.
- 11:37Absolutely.
- 11:37We know Notre Dame football will.
- 11:38Absolutely.
- 11:39William, defense.
- 11:40Defense.
- 11:41What, what do you think?
- 11:42Okay, so on the first drive I remember thinking, you know that three and out, the, we deferred off a kickoff- Yes the three and out on the first drive.
- 11:50I was like,"Wow, okay, this is the defense we've been talking about." Great coverage.
- 11:54Three and out.
- 11:55I think two incomplete passes and a rush for about two yards.
- 11:59It was great.
- 11:59They punt, we get the ball, then they have the strip sack.
- 12:03The secondary was shaky.
- 12:06I think the transfer out of Michigan jaden Sanders?
- 12:09Yeah, Sanders.
- 12:10He got burned.
- 12:11I've seen that everywhere on the internet, kinda clowning us because the secondary's been put on a pedestal and they didn't really live up to that in that moment.
- 12:21But yeah, no, Sanders got fried.
- 12:22But other than that, I thought it was great.
- 12:25Leonard Moore, oh my God, he had such a good game.
- 12:28Four tackles, and three of his tackles were coming from across the field on, like, a rush, and he was getting them by the shoelaces.
- 12:36Great game.
- 12:38That one play where he had towards the sideline where he reached his arm up and tried to pull it in, he almost had it.
- 12:43This- Almost had a one-handed interception.
- 12:44Yeah.
- 12:45Yeah, it was a- Off of one foot, too, leaning backwards.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:48No, definitely.
- 12:49When you talk about Jaden Sanders, I think also before he got burned, he had two breakups.
- 12:54Yeah.
- 12:54Yeah, he was a little bit feaster famine.
- 12:56And, you know, guys, when you're playing man and you're playing as aggressively as our guys play- Mm-hmm if you don't have Freeman talked about this in his press conference yesterday, but if you don't have good eye discipline, you are susceptible to biting on a double move, and that's what happened a couple of times.
- 13:11Both him and, Christian Gray got, got burned one time- Yeah it just wasn't for a touchdown.
- 13:17But that's gonna happen first game of the season.
- 13:20You know, you're still working out some kinks, and you're just, you're You are hungry, man.
- 13:24Those guys wanted to go and, and get some balls, and that's also coming after McKinney's- Yeah pick six.
- 13:31Awesome.
- 13:32Great.
- 13:33On the play, if you look back at it, the receiver didn't really see the ball.
- 13:36McKinney he was tracking it the whole time.
- 13:39He saw it, came down with the pick, then he was gone, that explosive speed right towards the end zone.
- 13:46He had a great game.
- 13:47I don't think he let up Maybe one, one pass, two passes Maybe, I- Maybe, maybe zero Yeah I think he was, he was outstanding.
- 13:57You know, corner two it's a little bit different than like, um, nickel You mean cover two?
- 14:03Or No, I'm saying he's, he's corner two Oh, sorry So the receiver he has on him.
- 14:07Yeah, he was playing field Yeah You know?
- 14:09Yeah.
- 14:09And that is, that's a, that's a completely different deal, for sure.
- 14:14Yeah, it was clear to me that Ash's game plan was to take away Colton Joseph's legs Yeah, and- And so that's what you saw in our rushing.
- 14:23Our D-line, even though we only had two sacks, they had really good lane discipline.
- 14:28Kept- And pressure kept Colton Joseph contained.
- 14:32Joseph, who had had torched so many teams last year with his legs.
- 14:37I read a statistic today.
- 14:38He had, every game last year he at least had a 10-yard run at some point 10 or more yards, excuse me Yeah And this game he didn't even have, or his longest run was eight yards.
- 14:48Yeah, I think we did a great job kind of pushing him to the outside.
- 14:52Dude, Adan Schuler was tracking him the whole time.
- 14:55Adan Schuler played amazing.
- 14:57He was my favorite out on the field.
- 14:59He was a ball hawk.
- 15:00He was tackling great in the open field by the ankles.
- 15:04Really textbook game.
- 15:06Things I want to give credit to our linebackers and corners and, uh, safeties for.
- 15:11The field, I don't know if anybody, any viewers noticed this when they were watching the game, everybody was slipping.
- 15:17Christian slipped on that big, I think, 20-yard pass gain.
- 15:21Everyone was slipping on the field.
- 15:22I saw McKinney slip, I saw Gray slip, I saw Drake Brown slip, I saw Sneed slip.
- 15:28I saw Leonard Moore slip.
- 15:30That's how you know it's bad.
- 15:32Um, no, the field, I don't know if that's just a Lambeau thing or the specific grass because they, they're getting ready for the Packers or something.
- 15:40Everybody was slipping.
- 15:42So all in all we did a great job.
- 15:44On the defensive line, Bryce Young had a great game.
- 15:48I think PPR he was the best on the defense.
- 15:51I think that's PPF, buddy.
- 15:52PPF.
- 15:53It's actually PFF- It's PFF you two are clowns.
- 15:59Oh, God, not points for reception.
- 16:02No, Bryce Young had a great game.
- 16:06Onyea, aw, he's hurt.
- 16:07Injury reports says several weeks.
- 16:09That's super-duper sad for me.
- 16:11And Taye And Taye And Taye.
- 16:13I was gonna get to that.
- 16:15Onyea was out.
- 16:16He played, was it 19 snaps?
- 16:19Yeah, 19 snaps.
- 16:20Um, him and Gray were It's a one snap difference between the two.
- 16:25I thought Gray did amazing.
- 16:26Yeah, Tion Green did- He did really, really good Really, really well He was better than Brew.
- 16:30No, he isn't.
- 16:31He was b- he was better than Brew is what I'm saying.
- 16:33Oh, yeah.
- 16:34He was better than Brew He was better than Brew that game No, I agree with that W- why'd you say no, he- I, I feel like Brew played great Yeah I thought Gray was better No- With the snaps he had, he got right to the quarterback Yeah, yeah, yeah, five tackles, for a D tackle- Brew, Brew was playing containment Yeah, I think he did great.
- 16:50I think he did good too.
- 16:52I think Gray did better.
- 16:53Talking about the defense real quick They had their right guard missing and I just feel like two sacks is not a good reflection on what we should have had.
- 17:03We should have had more to be honest.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:05Those two sacks did come in the second half.
- 17:08'Cause like guys like- Just remember anything they were, they were playing lanes and I thought they did a great job.
- 17:13We were- They were trying to ke- keep Col- Joseph in the center of the field- Yes, yes in the pocket.
- 17:17Yeah, I'm gonna say this.
- 17:19We didn't contain them good for like the first five rushes that he had.
- 17:24Contain who well?
- 17:24Joseph.
- 17:25Joseph.
- 17:26Drake Bowen had that one TFL and then we got better as the game went on but that was in like- But contain means nothing- the third drive no big plays Yeah He only had, the longest run was 80 yards He did a great job containing So Wisconsin, 67 yards rushing that's it.
- 17:41Yeah This is a school, and guys you wouldn't remember this but- I do remember this back in my day- Jonathan Taylor Jonathan Taylor come on I know it Jonathan Taylor, Mel- Melvin Gordon this is a run first school like this is- Yes It is RVU We know man It's RVU so to hold- No it's not RVU by the way Well, I'm it in the past it has been and...
- 18:00to hold them to 67 yards rushing pretty exceptional.
- 18:04Total offense for the Badgers 284 yards.
- 18:08Yeah So I think that's a pretty awesome day in the for the Irish.
- 18:12Yeah pretty good.
- 18:13Tay being out is so sad.
- 18:15I thought Talge did good with the snaps that he had but Tay is just so special and he's great and he's more of a physical force than Talge I think.
- 18:24He's the ball hawk it's super sad that he was out.
- 18:27He missed a few tackles when he was in.
- 18:29He didn't have a great game This, I mean look the silver lining here gives Talge opportunities- Mm-hmm and then also you've been asking for Joey O'Brien Yeah dude Joey O'Brien one snap Yeah Yeah Let's see him let's see him more come on we are 0- I have a feeling we'll see him We'll see him we'll see him this week Yeah this weekend I have a feeling we'll see him this week We'll see a lot of freshmen this weekend hopefully All right so moving, moving on special teams really quickly Spencer Horvath Porath Porath Spencer Porath Horath Porath did a an exceptional job guys He did a really good job Yeah did that 52 He hit a 52 yarder dude Oh my gosh We hit a field goal I think that's the first time we hit a field goal since A&M NC State NC State It's the first time since NC State That's still a wicked long time Which is yeah it's ridiculous So really happy with, with, uh, poor ass.
- 19:19Yeah.
- 19:20And we needed that field goal too.
- 19:21We did.
- 19:22We did.
- 19:22We just needed, we needed to keep points coming on the, on the board there.
- 19:26And then, blocked punt.
- 19:29Not great.
- 19:30Oh my gosh.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:31Looking- That was so frustrating watching.
- 19:33They had, they two, they lined up.
- 19:35They didn't even look.
- 19:36They didn't even see the blocked punt.
- 19:37It was terrible.
- 19:38They, the entire line shifted right- Yeah it opened up that entire side of the line for- Yeah.
- 19:43I don't know if it was a bad snap to the left or the punter didn't run it to the right, but oh my gosh, that was horrible.
- 19:49That's usually us with those punts.
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:51And then Jasper's game, for as much as we talked about,"Hey, this guy's got a cannon," he got a ton of height.
- 19:56I think we need less height and more, you know, distance.
- 19:59Well, I think, again, first, first game, first meaningful game for that guy, that, that young man and, you know, and, and he got his punt blocked at the beginning.
- 20:09Yeah.
- 20:09So I could see how he might be a little bit skittish.
- 20:12He got out-punted.
- 20:12That other team's punter, holy- Well, that was- that punt, that was, that was special that was probably the play of the game.
- 20:18That was probably the play of the game.
- 20:18What was it?
- 20:19Where, where did he line up from?
- 20:20I don't know.
- 20:21It was a 69-yard punt.
- 20:2260 yard and a p- little bounce, bounce right on the- It was like- right pylon.
- 20:26But there was just- It was beautiful they didn't even touch it.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:28Didn't even touch it.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:29And th- there could've been two one-yard punts.
- 20:31Yeah.
- 20:32And I think the one- They had to touch it that wasn't a one-yard punt ended up being a field goal for us.
- 20:37I think.
- 20:38I, I could be wrong.
- 20:39But it's- Yeah, but the, the It was on the one.
- 20:41The guy was right there.
- 20:41He whiffed on it.
- 20:42Yeah, he whiffed on it.
- 20:43Yeah.
- 20:43That's what I mean.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44If they recovered that then we probably, I think it's probably 10 to 10 and a half.
- 20:49Yeah.
- 20:50So anyways, long story short- Irish win gave a few halves.
- 20:55Yeah.
- 20:55Irish win.
- 20:56First one in the books.
- 20:57Hopefully some momentum coming out of this.
- 21:00Unfortunately got, two defensive players, but w- we'll give an opportunity to other people to come in.
- 21:06It's, it's all fine until it's not fine.
- 21:08That's the only problem.
- 21:09So- Yep we wanna stay as healthy as possible.
- 21:13Great job, boys.
- 21:15let's do some game balls.
- 21:16Game balls.
- 21:16Game balls really quick.
- 21:17All right?
- 21:18Offense, Calvin.
- 21:19You already heard me.
- 21:20It's Faizon.
- 21:21Faizon.
- 21:22Yeah.
- 21:22Yep.
- 21:22I think he had 84 yards, um, receiving on, like, four receptions, shifty.
- 21:27You know, made some big catches, but yeah, you know.
- 21:30Mr.
- 21:30Reliable.
- 21:31What about you, William?
- 21:32Faizon.
- 21:33I was gonna give it to Nolan James and I'm like,"Nah, Faizon.
- 21:36Definitely Faizon." Yeah.
- 21:37And look, I will g- I, I will, I will zag here and- Yeah, Cal, you didn't touch on Nolan James, did you?
- 21:43Well, no.
- 21:43He, I think Nolan James is great.
- 21:45He has, he, he talks about the receptions.
- 21:47Yeah.
- 21:47Nolan James was much a bigger threat, receiving and he made some exceptional catch, catches.
- 21:52It was the catch and run.
- 21:53Absolutely.
- 21:54Yeah.
- 21:54Absolutely.
- 21:55Just cutting it up field.
- 21:56Great.
- 21:57Uh, I'm gonna go with CJ.
- 21:59Uh, I know- Aw the stat line- Yeah, I don't like that wasn't unbelievable.
- 22:0119 of 29, I believe for 239, excuse me.
- 22:07Um, but two touchdowns and for me it was just taking what the defense gave.
- 22:13A sign of maturity.
- 22:15It's not Heisman type numbers, but in a game where you're just trying to keep the ball and not turn it over and just let your team depth- Mm-hmm do the work, he did exactly what he needed to do.
- 22:28I can agree with that.
- 22:29I also thought he wasn't very creative.
- 22:30You know, he looked downfield a, not a lot, and he also didn't get out of the pocket at all.
- 22:35Yeah, he didn't.
- 22:35No attempted rushes.
- 22:37No.
- 22:37But we don't want him running.
- 22:39Well, if it's there, it's there, and there's gotta be some point of the time- Well- where it was there there wa- there was.
- 22:44Yeah.
- 22:44I, I didn't see it today.
- 22:45I wanna give a quick shout out to the Wisconsin linebackers.
- 22:47Those guys played amazing.
- 22:48Yes, they did.
- 22:49Defense.
- 22:50William, game ball.
- 22:52Don Schuler.
- 22:53Cal?
- 22:54Uh, yeah.
- 22:56The Don Schuler as well.
- 22:57It was between Moore and Schuler.
- 22:58I just think Schuler.
- 23:00Yeah, Moore didn't get targeted enough for him to get a game ball, to be honest.
- 23:02Well, why, why are you targeting Leonard Moore in the first place?
- 23:04And just to be different from you guys, I'm gonna say, Drake Bowen.
- 23:08All right.
- 23:09You know what?
- 23:09No, that's not a, that's not a bad one.
- 23:11Led the team in tackles.
- 23:12All right.
- 23:13Do you have a wild card, William?
- 23:14Oh, yeah.
- 23:15Porath.
- 23:18Porath.
- 23:18Porath.
- 23:19What about you?
- 23:20Porath.
- 23:20Um- Yeah, I'm gonna go Jayson Lanigan, to be honest.
- 23:25I think- Fair enough.
- 23:26Dude.
- 23:26Yeah.
- 23:26No, no, no, listen, he set up our lead, you know?
- 23:29He got that touchdown.
- 23:30He made it 10 to three.
- 23:32They scored again, obviously.
- 23:33But he was also very reliable in the, running game as a run blocker, which I touched about last episode, so yeah.
- 23:40Absolutely.
- 23:41And I'm gonna go with Kea.
- 23:43Kahanu Kea.
- 23:44Dude.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:44Okay, hold on.
- 23:45You can't give him a game ball if the th- okay, the thing was out of bounds, if we're being honest.
- 23:50All right, I haven't seen the replays l- the- Yes, you have.
- 23:53We were at the game.
- 23:54You saw the replays.
- 23:55The was, it, look, it was not- He was out.
- 23:56He was out it was not clear and obvious.
- 23:58You guys know how I feel.
- 24:00He was- Okay, hold on, hold on.
- 24:01No, no, no.
- 24:01If, if you can't make a decision in 30 seconds- No, no, no, no, no, no, no then the play on the field stands.
- 24:04Okay, yeah, but when, when does that- The call on the field stands nobody, no officials ever use that.
- 24:08In the, in the Michigan game, was that clear and obvious?
- 24:10Well, apparently they were on a different clock.
- 24:13That's BS.
- 24:14Oh, but agree completely.
- 24:15Yes, because the, if you listen to it, the analyst says that the endgame clock is synced with the online graphic clock.
- 24:22I, look, I'm with you.
- 24:23I'm with you.
- 24:23But yeah, no, the clear and obvious rule doesn't apply anymore.
- 24:27I really wish it did.
- 24:27I think it's a great rule, but, it was out of bounds.
- 24:31Go look at the footage, it was out.
- 24:33Yeah.
- 24:33All right.
- 24:34Let's move on.
- 24:35Rice preview Rice is super-duper run heavy.
- 24:42Um, they had, 400 something yards.
- 24:45It's, uh, kinda nuts how many rushing yards they had and yeah, they had- Who did they play, Cal?
- 24:53They played Houston Christian.
- 24:55They rushed the ball for seven- You're good.
- 24:58They rushed the ball 70 times- for 165 yards.
- 25:02It was 6.6 yards per carry.
- 25:05They only attempted nine passes.
- 25:06It was 28, passing yards.
- 25:08They have this guy named Jacory Brown, transfer from UCF.
- 25:13Before that he was at Miami.
- 25:14Former four star, he ran the ball 13 times for 98 yards.
- 25:19Um, they have- Is he power or elusive?
- 25:22He's a quarterback, so I'd assume that he's elusive.
- 25:25Um- He's 6'4", 227, so he's put together.
- 25:29Yeah, he's- He is he's a big boy.
- 25:30No, 100%.
- 25:31Um, we have Tyvon Byers, 104 yards that game.
- 25:38And then you have Stone Combs, Koa Akui, who are a linebacker and a safety.
- 25:45Those two are good.
- 25:46Preston Zinter, former Notre Dame linebacker, transferred to Rice, became a tight end.
- 25:53And there's no injuries for them specifically.
- 25:56They had, um, Justin"Jesus" Machado.
- 26:02He was denied- a seventh year of- What, uh, what you laughing about?
- 26:08Jesus, not Jesus.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:10You don't know.
- 26:11Yeah.
- 26:11You, you never know.
- 26:12Have you seen The Big Lebowski?
- 26:14No.
- 26:14Dude, it's Jesus.
- 26:15I haven't shown you The Big Lebowski?
- 26:17I've, I've watched The Big Lebowski.
- 26:18I just don't know Fujus.
- 26:20It's Jesus.
- 26:21Nobody says Jesus.
- 26:22I mean- Hey Zeus anyways, yeah, for us, we wanna get them in third and long as much as we can.
- 26:31We need to treat Jacory Brown as a runner all the time, and then expect this, expect a very slow possession game for Rice.
- 26:40They're gonna take a ton of time off the clock.
- 26:42Yeah, they had 40 minutes of game clock used.
- 26:44Yeah.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:45It's something nuts.
- 26:46Anyways, um, yeah, it's as much as we need to know about Rice.
- 26:53Yeah, it, it's g- it feels like it's gonna be another game of playing contain.
- 26:57I think we probably can be a little bit more aggressive in our lanes.
- 27:00I don't know.
- 27:01I h- have a feeling Rice's O-line won't be nearly as stout as Wisconsin's.
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:06I think they're fried.
- 27:07Yeah.
- 27:08Rice is fried.
- 27:08Yeah, fried rice.
- 27:12All right.
- 27:13Sounds delicious.
- 27:13Let's, uh, let's get Uncle Tony the horn here real quick.
- 27:17Uncle Tony.
- 27:17And let's get some, let's get some score predictions.
- 27:19We got a s- very special guest today on the pod.
- 27:23Uncle T, Tony Fonseca.
- 27:26Just a little background on Tony.
- 27:28Tony's from Providence, Rhode Island.
- 27:30If you've never met him when you do meet him you'll find out that you've s- he's from Providence in about 15 seconds.
- 27:35He'll let you know.
- 27:36Yes.
- 27:36It's one of the things, many things we love about him.
- 27:39Tony and I were teammates for one year.
- 27:41He was teammates with your mother for four years and, uh, he was probably better friends with your mom than he was with me before, we developed this lifelong friendship.
- 27:53Right, Tony?
- 27:54You think that's accurate?
- 27:54S- that sounds about right.
- 27:56Yes, and thank you for that warm welcome.
- 27:58Boys, it's great to see you and hear from you after we spent the weekend together.
- 28:02Great to see you too.
- 28:03I hope, I hope your mom, I hope your mom is still my friend.
- 28:08We had a pretty good time huh, Tony?
- 28:10Yeah, we had, we had the best time.
- 28:13We really did.
- 28:13Yeah, I was telling the boys just reminding them that, uh, we always win the bus ride so to get a W before the game even starts it's always a nice thing to do.
- 28:22Always, always a wonderful ride yes.
- 28:24No doubt.
- 28:25No doubt.
- 28:25All right so before we move on to game predictions for Rice tell me one thing you loved about the Lambeau experience Uh, so in preparation for this, you asked me to have an offensive star of the game, a defensive star of the game- Yes and a wild card, and my wild card is actually Lambeau Field.
- 28:45Yeah., I thought the experience was great.
- 28:48I thought, such a historic stadium.
- 28:50If you love football, you've gotta love Lambeau Field, even if you're a Bears fan.
- 28:54And, uh, I definitely asked about 50 police officers where I could find the Belichick trophy and the Belichick statue- since it was Titletown.
- 29:04Um, but, the most interesting thing I dug up in preparation for this was Uh, even the NBC announcer said it was the third game, for college teams ever at Lambeau Field.
- 29:15Yeah.
- 29:15And I found that not to be true.
- 29:18That was my, my deep dive today.
- 29:20So it's either four or five games, and St.
- 29:24Norbert College played three of them.
- 29:27And in 1982- Where is St.
- 29:28Norbert College?
- 29:29St.
- 29:30Norbert is somewhere in Wisconsin, not far from Green Bay.
- 29:33I am not great at geography- as everyone who knows me knows.
- 29:38Um, it is- Is it closer to Italy or the Galapagos?
- 29:42It is...
- 29:43That's a great question.
- 29:44I'm not sure.
- 29:45I'm not sure Wisconsin is closer to the Galapagos or the boot.
- 29:49But what, what I did find interesting is that in 1982 and 1983, St.
- 29:54Norbert played Fordham in back-to-back games at Lambeau Field.
- 29:59Oh.
- 29:59And it was called the Vince Lombardi Classic or the Vince Lombardi Charitable Classic.
- 30:04And in 1982, St.
- 30:06Norbert won 14 to 12, and there were about 5,000 people there.
- 30:10And in 1983, I don't have the score in front of me, but it was something like six to nothing.
- 30:15Nor- St.
- 30:16Norbert beat Fordham.
- 30:17And all the internet has the same story.
- 30:21It says there were 842 people there.
- 30:24And they said, and some of the guys from St.
- 30:26Norbert said, uh,"Lambeau Field held 56,000 people and 55,000 didn't show up." And it was a torrential rainstorm, and it was the first day of deer hunting season.
- 30:38Ah.
- 30:38And, uh, and, according to the internet, St.
- 30:41Norbert also played there in 1960.
- 30:44But St.
- 30:44Norbert played Fordham because obviously Coach Lombardi went to Fordham.
- 30:47Yes.
- 30:48But it was also where the Packers had training camp.
- 30:52And so the Packers training camp and that is St.
- 30:54Norbert College.
- 30:55Wow.
- 30:55So that, that was my fun fact.
- 30:57Uh, and then obviously Wisconsin and LSU played about 10 years before us, and, uh, Wisconsin won that game 16 to 14.
- 31:04But anyways, that was my fun fact about, Lambeau Field.
- 31:08I thought, again, to bring this back full circle, the wild card of the weekend was definitely Lambeau.
- 31:13The people are so nice.
- 31:15The stadium is just top-notch.
- 31:17We had unbelievable seats right down the middle of the field.
- 31:20And so many of these NFL stadiums are tiered, and just to be in an NFL venue that's a bowl, I thought was It, it felt like a college stadium.
- 31:28It felt like a college atmosphere.
- 31:29And, uh, that was great.
- 31:31That was my takeaway from Lambeau, and that's my wild card for the weekend.
- 31:34I love it.
- 31:35I love it.
- 31:36Offensive game ball, defensive game ball?
- 31:38So I don't know who you guys picked, but my offensive game ball has to go to James Flanagan.
- 31:44I was so excited to have Cooper Flanagan come back.
- 31:47Excuse me.
- 31:47I didn't realize we had another Flanagan who played the same position.
- 31:50Going back, going back to James Flanagan.
- 31:53Ooh, bless him.
- 31:53I mean, the kid is from, the kid is from Green Bay.
- 31:57He went to high school there.
- 31:58His dad played at Notre Dame.
- 31:59His dad played for the Packers.
- 32:00His grandfather played for the Packers.
- 32:02To catch the first touchdown of the game in your hometown, in your home stadium- First starter your grandfather and your father played there.
- 32:08Unbelievable story unbelievable story.
- 32:11And, and then, for defense, Jason Onye went to my high school, Bishop Hendricken.
- 32:16And to see him get hurt, we know that Leonard Moore is so great.
- 32:20We know that Johnson and Schuler are so great in the back.
- 32:23We know Christian Gray can do it in a big spot.
- 32:25But the, the corners and the safeties are always better when there's a pass rush.
- 32:29And to have, Francis Brew, I don't know how you say his last name.
- 32:33Brew.
- 32:33Brew.
- 32:33Brew, yeah.
- 32:34Brew.
- 32:35I, I mean, I wanna call him Brew You.
- 32:37It just feels like a university where you drink beers.
- 32:40But he was fantastic.
- 32:42He really flashed on tape.
- 32:43I know Pete Samson showed a little bit of his highlights, on Twitter yesterday.
- 32:47And to see a guy that you're not counting on and then a guy we're gonna need to count on for the next four or five weeks come in and make some plays and stuff the run, I thought, I thought he, uh, he deserved my game ball.
- 32:57I like guys that we weren't necessarily expecting to come in and actually make a play, to give out game balls to.
- 33:05Yeah.
- 33:05Like that.
- 33:06I like that a lot.
- 33:07Yep.
- 33:08All right, Rice Owls.
- 33:09Do you know anything about Rice?
- 33:10Did you do some research?
- 33:11I did a little bit of research.
- 33:13They really like to run the ball.
- 33:14They're gonna have some gimmicks.
- 33:15They're going to, run, run, run to try to set up a pass.
- 33:19They're gonna pass more than the service academies.
- 33:21But man, you know, sometimes for these Notre Dame football games, we've got to set aside four hours.
- 33:25This game might be over in two hours and 45 minutes.
- 33:28Seriously.
- 33:28I mean, we're gonna run the football.
- 33:30They're gonna run the football.
- 33:31There were some of these Navy games where you only got the ball five, six times.
- 33:36I don't think this game's gonna be like that because I don't expect Rice to go up and down the field.
- 33:40We've played Rice five times, and three of the five, they didn't score a touchdown against us.
- 33:45They scored two, zero, and three points the first three times we played them.
- 33:49We've scored over 48 or more three of the five times.
- 33:52I don't know if we're gonna have the ball enough, to score 48 or more points, but I really don't expect Rice to see the end zone.
- 33:59I'm gonna say Notre Dame 46, Rice six Yep.
- 34:06Feels about right.
- 34:07I, I like that Dad- I like that you go next.
- 34:09You want me to go next?
- 34:10You go next.
- 34:10Yeah, I'm, I'm there with Uncle Tony here.
- 34:12I think it's gonna be a very similar type thing.
- 34:15The way our offense is constructed, I don't think we're gonna have a lot of explosive plays.
- 34:20Um, and so as a result, that clock's gonna be moving a lot.
- 34:25Yeah.
- 34:25And because Rice is gonna be running the ball and we're gonna be trying to establish the run earlier than we did against Wisconsin, same type thing, don't think we'll have a ton of possession.
- 34:35So I like 42 to 3.
- 34:37That's, that's my prediction.
- 34:3942, 3.
- 34:3942 to 3.
- 34:41Calvin?
- 34:44Um, I'm gonna go 49 to 6.
- 34:51You just make this up on the spot?
- 34:53Yeah.
- 34:57Yeah, 49, 49-6.
- 34:58That feels right?
- 34:59Feels just right.
- 35:01All right.
- 35:01All right.
- 35:02Ugh.
- 35:03I, I got, I got 45 to 3.
- 35:0545 to 3.
- 35:06Yeah.
- 35:07So you liked mine so much that you added a field goal and doubled it?
- 35:10Yeah.
- 35:13That's perfect.
- 35:15Yeah, it's really hard to score more than 40 points without defensive takeaways and it's really hard to get a scoop and score.
- 35:22It's easier to get a pick six as we know'cause every time we play Wisconsin they seem to come in droves.
- 35:26But, you know, we did run the ball 32 times and if you look at Nolan James' stat line, he touched the ball 11 times and he had 86 yards and I'm fine with that.
- 35:38I'm fine with him being a receiving, threat, too, out of the backfield.
- 35:43I think that we can use our running backs not just as running backs.
- 35:47We showed that last year.
- 35:48We don't have Price and Love.
- 35:50Nobody has ever had Price and Love at the same time, certainly not in the modern era of college football- two first round picks.
- 35:56But I, I think we're gonna really, really try to run the ball more than we did and hopefully we can break some long ones.
- 36:02That would be, that'd be the thing I'm looking forward to the most.
- 36:05I'm looking for as many first down runs that we can get, uh, that, that get for that get us another first down.
- 36:12That's- That's what I'm looking for.
- 36:13I'm with you, man.
- 36:14I'd, I'd like to establish the run earlier- Yeah and get this offensive line a little bit more cohesive.
- 36:19I guess in the press conference today- Coach Freeze was saying that They, they went in with the intent of trying to split snaps between Prescott and Absher I read that, yes Yeah.
- 36:29So, um, and it sounds like that's the intent for this next game.
- 36:33I wonder if they'll flip it though, if they'll start off Absher and then put Prescott in the second half.
- 36:38I heard that-'Cause I'd just be curious to see what they can do early on with Absher there at that right guard position I also think that one of the interesting subplots from this game was we should see a backup quarterback and it'll be interesting to see if Noah or Blake comes in.
- 36:52Um- Actually- I'm interested in that Great point I think it's gonna be Teddy Gerard.
- 36:56I don't think Blake Hubert's there He- Uh, he missed a decent amount of fall camp He, he's still, he's, he could be- He missed two weeks but he c- he missed a week or two weeks but he came back.
- 37:06Yeah, so that's tr- probably true though, Cal.
- 37:08It could be Noah or Teddy.
- 37:09Oh, I think they were listed as QB two or, correct- If he wasn't 100% Noah or Teddy Yeah And so it'll be interesting to see who the number two quarterback is and I think that player will get snaps in this game on Saturday I like,, Grubbs a lot better You do?
- 37:23Just'cause of his, like, out of pocket ability to scramble Yeah.
- 37:28It's a different dynamic, a different change of pace if you will His name is so close to no scrubs that I think you could make a pretty good T-shirt out of it That's good We'll just hope for his meteoric rise here so that we can do that.
- 37:43Hey, Tony, thanks for calling, man.
- 37:45Thanks for joining the pod Thanks for hanging out, guys.
- 37:47Yeah And I think- Thanks for ha- We're gonna have you return at some point over the course of the season So I'll, I'm looking forward to it.
- 37:54My January is wide open Oh, yeah, you better keep January 25th wide open.
- 37:59Thanks a lot for g- for, making time for us.
- 38:01Say hi to, to Jenny and the girls.
- 38:03Did the g- Will do did the girls give you, by chance, a, a score prediction?
- 38:08They did not give me- Okay a score prediction.
- 38:09But considering ours were all about the same and none of us have a cover, I'm pretty sure I know where the action needs to go.
- 38:15Yeah, I think you're right.
- 38:16I think you're right.
- 38:18All right, amigo.
- 38:19It's good catching up.

- 38:26Bye.
- 38:27That was Tony Fonseca.
- 38:29It's always great to talk to Uncle Tony.
- 38:31And in our next segment, the Starting 11, we'll continue off the game that we played last week.
- 38:38Yep.
- 38:38Cal struggled a little bit last week.
- 38:40Whomp, whomp.
- 38:40He did not get the mic.
- 38:43But, he'll have an opportunity in two more weeks.
- 38:46This week we have William.
- 38:49Indeed.
- 38:50And, just to refresh you on the rules of the game, two of us agree on a player in the one or two deep on the current ND roster.
- 38:58The third has 11 questions to figure out who that player is.
- 39:03All right?
- 39:04William, let's go ahead and, kick you off here with question one.
- 39:09Okay.
- 39:10So is this player on the defensive side of the ball?
- 39:13No.
- 39:14All right.
- 39:15All right.
- 39:18Is this player above six foot one?
- 39:27What?
- 39:27C.J.'s, C.J.'s six foot two.
- 39:30Yeah, he's above six foot one.
- 39:32Okay.
- 39:33Do we have a pen?
- 39:34Yeah.
- 39:37I'm winning this So he's not a running back.
- 39:41It's not Jordan Hasan.
- 39:42So keep clowning me, I just cleared four, three people.
- 39:48Oh, I cleared three people.
- 39:49Oh.
- 39:52Jeffries ab- b- uh, or below six foot one, so I can clear him too.
- 39:56Is that a question?
- 39:57I think that's a question.
- 39:57I have no idea if that's a que- I don't know.
- 40:00And is Milan Grams below six foot one too?
- 40:04Just clown, dude.
- 40:05Okay.
- 40:07Is this player- On the line?
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:14Yes.
- 40:15So that's four questions.
- 40:17No, it's three.
- 40:18Three?
- 40:21I'm gonna win, I'm gonna win.
- 40:21Okay.
- 40:22Is this player a tackle?
- 40:24No.
- 40:25I'm so good at this game.
- 40:29Is this player a center?
- 40:35No.
- 40:35Go, go ahead.
- 40:41All right.
- 40:41So he's not a center, so he's a guard.
- 40:43That's five questions.
- 40:44He's a guard.
- 40:45Yeah.
- 40:45Okay.
- 40:46Um- That's six questions.
- 40:46No, you can't do that.
- 40:47You, you repeated You said,"Is he a nice q-..." Yes.
- 40:52Is this Sullivan Absher?
- 40:54No.
- 40:56He's a guard, dumb-dumb.
- 40:58You said it was a guard.
- 40:59No, we didn't.
- 41:00We said it- We did, we did say he was a guard.
- 41:02Oh, yeah.
- 41:02He's technically a guard.
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:02I said,"If he, if, if, if he Is he a tackle or a center?" And you said,"No." Yeah.
- 41:10"So he's a guard." Yes.
- 41:11Yeah.
- 41:11And you said,"So he's a guard?" And I said,"Yes." So that's, that's- So that was a question.
- 41:15I said,"Is he on the O line?" And you said,"Yes." So it has to be a right or a left guard, correct?
- 41:19I guess it does.
- 41:21I said,"Is he on the- That's another question.
- 41:23That's, that's eight.
- 41:24No, you can't That's eight.
- 41:26Do you have any more questions you'd like to ask?
- 41:30Every time you ask a question, I'm writing it down.
- 41:32Is this Anthony Knapp?
- 41:33No.
- 41:40Nine.
- 41:41No.
- 41:44That's nine.
- 41:44Is this Ashton Grieg?
- 41:46No.
- 41:46No.
- 41:49No, you can't do that.
- 41:52Dad.
- 41:52I thought you asked, you asked if he was a center.
- 41:54We said,"No." So?
- 41:57So?
- 41:59You got one question left.
- 42:01Okay, this isn't a question, I'm just repeating what I said.
- 42:05That's Question.
- 42:06I said,"Is this a tackle?" And you said,"No." I said,"Is this a center?" And you said,"No." And I said,"Is this on the O line?" And you said,"Yes." So it has to be Hey, son.
- 42:16We have receipts.
- 42:19We have receipts.
- 42:19Okay, well, so who is it?
- 42:21So you have this last question.

- 42:25This is it.
- 42:26No, but, um, this is, this is- No, but I would No, la, la, bye.
- 42:32Yeah.
