- 0:08Speaker 1: Okay, it is Friday, the fourteenth of August. You might
- 0:10Speaker 1: think the most exciting thing is that we are about
- 0:13Speaker 1: to enter the era of signing new people from the teams.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But did you know on this Stone nineteen sixty five
- 0:18Speaker 1: it was the debut of that song Sonny and cher
- 0:21Speaker 1: I got you, Babe, You got us, Babe. You're on
- 0:24Speaker 1: No Dribble Distrat. Hello and welcome to No Dribble, the
- 0:39Speaker 1: podcast where we talk about before we talk about so
- 0:41Speaker 1: much more. My name's Carolyn.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Well, I'm Lose Ellis and I'm through Guardian.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Gord, he's back with us in the house. How
- 0:50Speaker 1: is your jet lag, because obviously you know it's now
- 0:53Speaker 1: several days.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It kind of feels exactly like it did on you know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: like don't get me wrong, A V drink down that
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm going, okay, no feeling fine, I for you, good
- 1:05Speaker 2: night's sleep and back on track. Jet Lag sucks, but
- 1:09Speaker 2: it's part of the job.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Did you hear that day? I think looking at banning
- 1:14Speaker 1: sales of energy drinks to under sixteenth, I think that's sensational.
- 1:19Speaker 2: That's a great thing, and I honestly I rarely, rarely
- 1:22Speaker 2: ever had them.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I had two red Bulls.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I don't drink any stimulants at all, but I had
- 1:26Speaker 2: two Red Bulls in Blasgow and I was like going
- 1:29Speaker 2: mental and this feed drink was just to get me
- 1:33Speaker 2: through Wednesday and Friday's session of dribble.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Well, we appreciate you, do you know?
- 1:38Speaker 4: When I was playing, there was a period of time
- 1:41Speaker 4: where Red Bull would send me heaps of product and
- 1:44Speaker 4: I don't know why or how, just random things happen
- 1:47Speaker 4: when you play sport. And so I went through a
- 1:50Speaker 4: stage of drinking a Red Bull before I played on
- 1:52Speaker 4: a Friday night. Back then, we used to play on
- 1:54Speaker 4: a Friday night. My performance was appalling. I would get
- 1:58Speaker 4: heart palpitations. I just did it for about three weeks
- 2:02Speaker 4: and Julie Fitzgerald was like, what is wrong with you?
- 2:05Speaker 3: I'm drinking a red Bull before a game? Like stop it? Yeah, yeah, coffee.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Would you have a day, Liz?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Like?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Now, I love coffee. I do love coffee.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I would have I tend to have no more than
- 2:15Speaker 4: three shots a day. I know I love coffee, but
- 2:17Speaker 4: I'm not a super big coffee drinker. But when I
- 2:19Speaker 4: was playing, I would have like a shot of caffeine.
- 2:24Speaker 4: When I realized the red Bull was bad for me.
- 2:26Speaker 4: A shot of caffeine was good for me, So it
- 2:28Speaker 4: would sort of I think it increases your arousal, so
- 2:32Speaker 4: you're ready to go. Your reflex is better, like an
- 2:34Speaker 4: hour or t before a game. But I'll go out
- 2:35Speaker 4: and get a shot of coffee and then I'd need
- 2:38Speaker 4: to twice the end of my career, take.
- 2:40Speaker 3: A valley and after the game to come back down
- 2:42Speaker 3: and kind of slid. No, none of that is very good.
- 2:46Speaker 4: If you're a young person listening, please do not try
- 2:48Speaker 4: this at home.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Last Friday, I hosted a Women in Rugby lunch which
- 2:54Speaker 1: was fantastics on at level forty seven of the Deloitte build,
- 2:58Speaker 1: the AMP building over looking the harbor. Absolutely magnificent, but
- 3:02Speaker 1: it takes a lot out of you when you're doing
- 3:04Speaker 1: one of those things, you're on all day. It was
- 3:06Speaker 1: four hours. It was fundraising, some hyping people up, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: then I got home and then I had to em
- 3:11Speaker 1: see a gig, which regrettably I had agreed to months ago.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It was fun. It was over at Couldie Dig because
- 3:17Speaker 1: it was a very fun gig, but I really had
- 3:20Speaker 1: to sort of try to force myself to get back up.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But I'm now at the age where I think, well,
- 3:25Speaker 1: a coffee would get me through the gig, but I
- 3:27Speaker 1: think I would be paying for it at three o'clock
- 3:29Speaker 1: in the morning, so I can't. I can't do that anymore.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So I just had to sort of lade a cock
- 3:35Speaker 1: tap instead, which was, you know, a perfect, perfect selection
- 3:40Speaker 1: at a choice. The weightlifters that our gym use it
- 3:44Speaker 1: like an ammonia thing sometimes if they're going to do
- 3:47Speaker 1: a really big lift, because they do Olympics lifting, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: I had was doing a competition once in one of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the guys said, he, I try this, and it is
- 3:55Speaker 1: it's it's the smelling salts is the idea, but it's
- 3:59Speaker 1: a very strong, moonious smell and you with it and
- 4:01Speaker 1: you get this. You should have it now, Gordy, like
- 4:04Speaker 1: it's it's awful, but it does just it's like suddenly
- 4:08Speaker 1: your mind is crystal clear. You just all right, let's
- 4:11Speaker 1: go and do this. Thing doesn't last long, but it's
- 4:13Speaker 1: not like caffeine. It stays in the system. Probably good
- 4:16Speaker 1: for you though nothing can Nothing that does that to
- 4:19Speaker 1: you can be good for you. Can it?
- 4:20Speaker 3: No, not at all.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I'll tell you what is good for you, Bloody ticket
- 4:24Speaker 4: sales at Glasgow. And I've talked a little bit about
- 4:26Speaker 4: Glasgow the last couple of weeks, but one.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Of the Segway.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Can we just pause the moment that was a world
- 4:32Speaker 1: champion Segway.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Thank you, Blizz. That's a gold medal, Thank you very much.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Gold medals for me been a bit thing for the
- 4:39Speaker 4: last twenty or so years.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So no, I'll take that.
- 4:42Speaker 4: But I saw something this week, Gordian. You might be
- 4:45Speaker 4: able to validate this for me that a quarter of
- 4:48Speaker 4: all Commonwealth Games tickets sold were for the netball.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yep, yep.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And at the end of the games, which you know
- 4:56Speaker 2: again netball probably underpromotes itself. This should have been everywhere,
- 5:01Speaker 2: So netball highest attended of any of the sports, quarter
- 5:06Speaker 2: of the ticketselves overall, biggest crowd at the gold medal game,
- 5:13Speaker 2: and if we got down to gender specific it would
- 5:15Speaker 2: probably be the highest number of females at any event.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That's my stat that it was insane. If he got
- 5:21Speaker 2: down to the best dressed it would have been at
- 5:23Speaker 2: the netball. If he got down to the loudest and
- 5:25Speaker 2: rowdiest people in the streets of Glasgow, it would have
- 5:27Speaker 2: been the netball. They just dominated and they it got bigger, bolder, brighter,
- 5:34Speaker 2: louder Sassia as.
- 5:37Speaker 3: The week went on.
- 5:37Speaker 2: As a lot sort of came up towards the back
- 5:41Speaker 2: end when we know the games get more serious and whatnot.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And you know, the gold medal day was just huge
- 5:48Speaker 2: and well done Glasgow and the entertainment, you know, the
- 5:52Speaker 2: sports entertainment team, Hayley mckella, who's the head of running
- 5:56Speaker 2: the netball up there, just did such a good job.
- 5:59Speaker 2: To know, the entertainment was great. They had the bagpipes
- 6:03Speaker 2: come out playing five hundred miles on the center cord.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It was just so themed and like the crowd were
- 6:08Speaker 2: just going mental. So do you know seriously, like I
- 6:13Speaker 2: came off when I saw that, Like there was a
- 6:15Speaker 2: couple of social talking to the stats and that lickue
- 6:19Speaker 2: and I'm just like, you know, netball should be so
- 6:22Speaker 2: bloody proud of itself that that's what we just did
- 6:24Speaker 2: at the Games. And there's always this question mark about
- 6:27Speaker 2: you know, like Olympics, you know Network going to be
- 6:30Speaker 2: in the Olympics or whatever Netble owns the Commonwealth Games,
- 6:34Speaker 2: we might only be vuying for one gold medal, not
- 6:36Speaker 2: like swimming or track and field but honest to goodness,
- 6:39Speaker 2: our fans netball fans own the sport. We are staying
- 6:44Speaker 2: and I'm here for I loved it. It was unreal.
- 6:47Speaker 2: There was not a train ride that I had tour
- 6:50Speaker 2: from the netball that someone would you know, would go
- 6:53Speaker 2: oh you Sue Gordion or Hi Sue or you know
- 6:56Speaker 2: the Aussie fans, they just it's just so lovely. It
- 6:59Speaker 2: was just cool. So we should be screaming it from
- 7:01Speaker 2: the rooftops.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Absolutely, And I guess this is that like the whole
- 7:05Speaker 1: underdog story of this Commonwealth Games with that gold medal
- 7:08Speaker 1: match too, It's like that that is wonderful. That's what
- 7:11Speaker 1: sport needs for people to go, oh, I've got to
- 7:13Speaker 1: be here to see this because it's an unexpected result.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I was watching the NRL on the weekend and I
- 7:18Speaker 1: know this is not everyone is an NRL fan, but
- 7:22Speaker 1: Saint George Dragons, who are going to probably get the
- 7:24Speaker 1: wooden spoon this year. We're playing the Kronella Sharks who
- 7:28Speaker 1: were sitting in fourth position. It should Saint George's only
- 7:31Speaker 1: won three games. Halfway through the crowd that the stadium
- 7:35Speaker 1: filled up because people are on their phone going our
- 7:38Speaker 1: guys might get up today get down here to see this,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and people want to be there for that. They want
- 7:43Speaker 1: to see that history. They want to see the underdog
- 7:46Speaker 1: overcoming and the like. And that's you know, I just
- 7:49Speaker 1: that was wonderful.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So that the sad game for Ossie fans. But this
- 7:53Speaker 2: stralage and make a game which I think has bought
- 7:56Speaker 2: the common around now. It's great for world netball. That
- 7:58Speaker 2: sort of seemed to be running off everyone lips, whether
- 8:01Speaker 2: you were Australian, New Zealand from Uganda, everyone was saying
- 8:06Speaker 2: the same thing. That clip at the end where Jamaica
- 8:10Speaker 2: win and then they pile on each other. I think
- 8:15Speaker 2: the second highest or if not now the highest viewed
- 8:18Speaker 2: clip from the games like that. So again like neck
- 8:23Speaker 2: bulls just killing it, you know, Like again, I get
- 8:26Speaker 2: so shitty and frustrated that, you know, we can't get
- 8:30Speaker 2: the sort of money in the game that I think
- 8:32Speaker 2: we deserve or should have. I know we're in that direction,
- 8:35Speaker 2: heading in that direction, but I just look and I go,
- 8:38Speaker 2: why wouldn't you want to jump on this product? This
- 8:40Speaker 2: product is insane?
- 8:42Speaker 1: And do you think so that that there were people
- 8:45Speaker 1: over there from the UK potentially do you think there
- 8:49Speaker 1: are people now who are going, well, I'm going to
- 8:51Speaker 1: Sitney next year. Oh who might not otherwise have.
- 8:54Speaker 2: No Olizzi, I was going to tell you this. I
- 8:56Speaker 2: think it was the most common bit of it was
- 9:00Speaker 2: the most common thing said of anyone's conversation when they
- 9:04Speaker 2: were talking about, like, you know, how good the games
- 9:08Speaker 2: had been and how much fun they'd had, and this
- 9:10Speaker 2: is unreal and I wasn't going to Sydney, but I'm
- 9:13Speaker 2: now booking my tickets. Had one lady saying, I've just
- 9:16Speaker 2: done and booked my flight, you know, like I want
- 9:18Speaker 2: my like It was honestly, everyone was talking about Sydney
- 9:22Speaker 2: next year, Netball World Cup, can't wait to get there.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And again, I know that if you're an Aussie and
- 9:29Speaker 2: you know, we desperately want gold and I want god,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I want the Aussies winning everything. But don't ever underestimate
- 9:36Speaker 2: what our ability as a country in developing the rest
- 9:40Speaker 2: of the world has done for the world game. In
- 9:43Speaker 2: the sense that there's belief in the system maybe that
- 9:46Speaker 2: never used to exist. There's belief in fans maybe that
- 9:50Speaker 2: never used to exist. There's a desperation to want to
- 9:53Speaker 2: now go to these pinnacle events because of those beliefs,
- 9:58Speaker 2: not just to be a fan it go, because actually
- 10:01Speaker 2: it's not necessarily a one horse race anymore, and we
- 10:05Speaker 2: are as a country, I've just been so accustomed to
- 10:08Speaker 2: success that we're so pissed that it's just not easy
- 10:12Speaker 2: for us anymore. But actually that's the best thing about
- 10:15Speaker 2: netball in the world system at the morning, at the moment,
- 10:19Speaker 2: which means we just got to work harder at what
- 10:20Speaker 2: we do and on any given day there's a number
- 10:23Speaker 2: of countries that could win and we should all be
- 10:26Speaker 2: bloody grateful that that's the case. So, Lizzie, I'm telling you, like,
- 10:31Speaker 2: the conversation around the World Cup next year was really
- 10:36Speaker 2: exciting because I was talking it up. I'm like, well,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you saw what we did in twenty fifteen, this will
- 10:41Speaker 2: be huge, So how exciting is that?
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's so exciting?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Right, And I think two things can be true. You
- 10:47Speaker 4: can be so disappointed as an Australian fan for the Diamonds,
- 10:50Speaker 4: but so excited about where our sport is going. I
- 10:53Speaker 4: think the World Cup next year will be a fantastic extravaganza.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Like I'm privy to some of the planning that's going
- 11:00Speaker 4: on and some of the fan engagement and planning for
- 11:03Speaker 4: that started months ago, right, So there's a whole team
- 11:06Speaker 4: who are working on hospitality and fan engagement and sponsors
- 11:10Speaker 4: and how they activate in the precinct and all that
- 11:13Speaker 4: sort of stuff. So it's going to be an unbelievable event.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And I think so all the stuff that happens around
- 11:21Speaker 4: the netball will be world class. But I think what
- 11:24Speaker 4: we've seen in Glasgow now is that it will be
- 11:26Speaker 4: a true contest between maybe five or six teams who
- 11:30Speaker 4: are all capable on the day of stepping up and
- 11:33Speaker 4: taking it. I don't know if you remember Gordy. At
- 11:35Speaker 4: the twenty fifteen World Cup, Malawi ran New Zealand within
- 11:38Speaker 4: a goal or two and it was so exciting and
- 11:41Speaker 4: everyone was talking about it and it really got a
- 11:44Speaker 4: sense of like, oh my god, we better go out
- 11:46Speaker 4: and watch Malarbi play because we don't want to miss
- 11:48Speaker 4: out on what they've done. And now there's any number
- 11:50Speaker 4: of teams that can do that.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:52Speaker 4: So, Jamaica came second and they beat Scotland by two
- 11:54Speaker 4: or three. New Zealand came first, they beat you Ganda
- 11:57Speaker 4: buy what eight so at the Commonwealth Game. So I
- 11:59Speaker 4: think we're going to see an extraordinarily close competition next year.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And the thing that has been done which I love,
- 12:09Speaker 4: after the Pool plate, the teams would be divided into
- 12:13Speaker 4: two lots. They'll be the top teams. The top ranked
- 12:15Speaker 4: teams will play for the World Cup, and then the
- 12:18Speaker 4: next level will play for the World Plate. So it's
- 12:21Speaker 4: sort of taking a bit of a leaf out of
- 12:22Speaker 4: rugby's book. When you go to sevens, they play for
- 12:24Speaker 4: the cup and the plate. And so for those teams
- 12:27Speaker 4: who don't make the top the cut to go into
- 12:29Speaker 4: the top ranked teams, they're still playing for something and
- 12:32Speaker 4: they're still playing for some silverware, which I think is
- 12:34Speaker 4: really important. So it's not just the games between Australia
- 12:38Speaker 4: and New Zealand and England and South Africa and Jamaica
- 12:41Speaker 4: and Uganda that you want to actually go and see
- 12:44Speaker 4: that next ranked team, so that you can actually have
- 12:48Speaker 4: the opportunity to see teams playing for something that's really meaningful,
- 12:53Speaker 4: right because they're playing for a piece of silverware and
- 12:55Speaker 4: they'll get to go back to their country with some silverware.
- 12:58Speaker 4: So I think the World Cup is exciting. I don't
- 13:01Speaker 4: know if any of you guys saw over the weekend
- 13:04Speaker 4: David Chris of Foley, the Premiere of Queensland, on his
- 13:07Speaker 4: Instagram page had a great post he went along to
- 13:09Speaker 4: the Vicky Wilson Cup and really I think Vicky Wilson
- 13:12Speaker 4: is the Queen of Queensland and so obviously she got
- 13:16Speaker 4: him along to the Vicky Wilson Cup and he made
- 13:18Speaker 4: a speech and he talked about the fact that nothing
- 13:21Speaker 4: would make him happier than to see netball in the Olympics.
- 13:23Speaker 4: And you know, he spoke about perhaps one of the
- 13:26Speaker 4: kids playing here today or a number of those girls
- 13:29Speaker 4: and young men might step up and play the Olympics
- 13:32Speaker 4: one day.
- 13:32Speaker 3: And it was so exciting.
- 13:34Speaker 4: It was such a great validation of the work that
- 13:36Speaker 4: the sport has done. And now we're not just see
- 13:39Speaker 4: an echo chamber right people around the sport and people
- 13:42Speaker 4: in government and power are starting to see that. So
- 13:44Speaker 4: that was really exciting. So if you get the opportunity
- 13:47Speaker 4: to goar and engage with his posts, please do and
- 13:49Speaker 4: please tell him he's on a winner.
- 13:50Speaker 1: It's amazing. The difference actually is having worked on the
- 13:53Speaker 1: twenty fifteen World Cup. So we're fifty four weeks out
- 13:56Speaker 1: from the Netball World Cup here in Sydney and in
- 13:59Speaker 1: twenty fifth been. One of the things we try to
- 14:01Speaker 1: do is encourage people to choose a second team. So
- 14:03Speaker 1: get behind another team. Yep, you're a Diamonds fan or
- 14:06Speaker 1: you're a Sewer Ferns fan, but choose another team. But
- 14:09Speaker 1: what was happening then is it's sort of just like, oh,
- 14:11Speaker 1: we'll pick one out of the e because you don't
- 14:12Speaker 1: know any of the players. Now we know players in
- 14:16Speaker 1: so many different national teams, so actually choosing a second
- 14:21Speaker 1: team is a much more viable thing for netball fans
- 14:24Speaker 1: to do because they're doing it on the basis I
- 14:26Speaker 1: have a connection with this. So I'm going to choose
- 14:29Speaker 1: the Tongue of Talas as my second team. I'm going
- 14:31Speaker 1: to choose Malawi. I'm going to choose South Africa. You know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: there's we know so much about these teams now, these
- 14:37Speaker 1: different players as a result of the highly controversial internationals
- 14:42Speaker 1: coming into Super Network. But I just I think, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 1: from a tournament perspective and not just from the people
- 14:48Speaker 1: running the tournament and trying to get people engaged. But
- 14:51Speaker 1: as a fan, it's going to be better for us
- 14:53Speaker 1: to go along and go I'm going to walk into
- 14:56Speaker 1: a random game now with my ticket and it's so
- 14:59Speaker 1: I know someone on said these teams and teamy, Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Do you know I don't think we again, we should
- 15:05Speaker 2: be more proud than worried about Suncorp super Netball and
- 15:10Speaker 2: like all you have to do and I like, I help,
- 15:12Speaker 2: blessed am I Like, I'm just a I'm just a
- 15:15Speaker 2: commentator at Suncorp super Netball. But I get over to
- 15:19Speaker 2: Glasgow and like I'm treated like a bloody superstar all right,
- 15:25Speaker 2: And I'm not This is not me being arrogant or anything,
- 15:27Speaker 2: but how much people love Suncorp super Netball as a product.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Like it's like I've always I believe in it, right,
- 15:36Speaker 2: Like I'm a massive believer in it. I'm a massive
- 15:38Speaker 2: believer in us running the world's best netball competition. And
- 15:41Speaker 2: I'm a massive believer in an open import policy because
- 15:44Speaker 2: it's the only way we get to keep that label
- 15:47Speaker 2: right as the world's best. And you go and plunk
- 15:50Speaker 2: yourself outside of Australia in another event and people are
- 15:54Speaker 2: envious of what we're doing, they're proud of what we're doing.
- 15:58Speaker 2: They are massive fans of what we're doing, and like, again.
- 16:02Speaker 3: It just I don't.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I think we sit in our little bubble over here
- 16:07Speaker 2: and are so privileged to have what we have that
- 16:10Speaker 2: we truly are underestimating its value globally. And you know,
- 16:16Speaker 2: it's on us to find a way to make sure
- 16:19Speaker 2: that Australia remains number one. But if and sun Corps
- 16:23Speaker 2: Supernipple is the vehicle to develop the rest of the world,
- 16:26Speaker 2: there's no two ways about it. But we're still developing
- 16:28Speaker 2: us and I know that, yes, the imports are taking
- 16:31Speaker 2: positions and whatnot, but it just puts pressure on our
- 16:35Speaker 2: system to be better in other ways because all those
- 16:37Speaker 2: other countries are still having to develop their depth as well.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Right, It's about depth in your system. So but I
- 16:43Speaker 3: I just.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Want to say, like SSN as a product is doing
- 16:47Speaker 2: amazing things for the world game, and then you know
- 16:50Speaker 2: Glasgow as a tournament is catapulting people towards World Cup
- 16:55Speaker 2: in twenty twenty seven. It's just a really nice little
- 16:58Speaker 2: period of time in netball on the world stage at
- 17:02Speaker 2: the moment. And again you go to like knowing players
- 17:05Speaker 2: in other teams. You should have heard the bloody raw
- 17:08Speaker 2: and unique Polavi walked out onto the court for the
- 17:11Speaker 2: Tongatalas and doing her uniquey things and the crowd of
- 17:15Speaker 2: just loving her. Now, historically they'd be like, who the
- 17:17Speaker 2: hell's your need? She was a superstar people loving her.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Talk about choosing your second team Jamaica where everybody's second
- 17:26Speaker 2: team all week? When Jamaica beat Australia, the number of
- 17:29Speaker 2: people that ran out of the stadium and formed a
- 17:32Speaker 2: guard for Jamaica to walk out of like you know,
- 17:36Speaker 2: you know, like after a rock concert and they all
- 17:39Speaker 2: sort of want to see that rock stars hopping onto
- 17:41Speaker 2: the bus and it's just like chaos that was I
- 17:46Speaker 2: can't it's it's just crazy at another level. So we
- 17:49Speaker 2: should we should hold our heads tight. It's and twenty.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Get your bloody tickets quickly because the Poms are coming
- 17:55Speaker 2: as an example, and when.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Tickets go and sale, I think soon.
- 17:59Speaker 2: So yeah, get ready, very excited.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Save your pennies, save your pany All right, Well, this
- 18:04Speaker 1: isn't even our netble segment, so we have a little
- 18:06Speaker 1: break and we're going to come back. Corty, I've got
- 18:07Speaker 1: a question for you in our netball segment. So, Gordy,
- 18:23Speaker 1: since we have you here and we're so lucky that
- 18:26Speaker 1: you will come on from time to time, and help
- 18:28Speaker 1: us out not just that you are a great chat
- 18:30Speaker 1: but you are an absolute font of information about things
- 18:34Speaker 1: we want to know about. And I know there's a
- 18:36Speaker 1: lot of questions in the dribbler community about the salary
- 18:40Speaker 1: cap and how it works and how you can build
- 18:45Speaker 1: a team around that, and I would just love for
- 18:48Speaker 1: you to be able to give us the idiot's guide
- 18:52Speaker 1: to the super Netble salary cap and from a team
- 18:56Speaker 1: administrator's point of view, how that guides your deceis making.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so, okay, salary tough one. It's always tough. You've
- 19:05Speaker 2: got your minimum spend and your maximum spend, which every
- 19:08Speaker 2: club has, and it's in different categories. And so those
- 19:12Speaker 2: different categories, there's two or three categories that you have
- 19:16Speaker 2: to spend in a No. One category, you have to
- 19:19Speaker 2: spend in two other categories that you can choose to
- 19:22Speaker 2: spend in, but one of those two categories does have
- 19:25Speaker 2: a minimum spind So theory you're spending across two categories,
- 19:29Speaker 2: but players might only be in one of those two categories.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And then the third category is kind of where I
- 19:37Speaker 2: think probably your best area is that if you're trying
- 19:41Speaker 2: to snag a player, you're trying to build in that
- 19:44Speaker 2: third category. So there's a bit of manipulation that goes
- 19:47Speaker 2: through the categories, always knowing that there's a minimum spend
- 19:50Speaker 2: in the maximum spend, and then there's a minimum salary,
- 19:53Speaker 2: which that salary has lifted through the latest CPA. And
- 19:57Speaker 2: so are you about to tell us what the three
- 19:59Speaker 2: categories are?
- 20:00Speaker 4: Oh?
- 20:00Speaker 2: So, well, there's there's the there's the actual so like
- 20:04Speaker 2: what's the best way. There's the total ploer salary, so
- 20:07Speaker 2: that's your top of player payments. Then there's your part
- 20:09Speaker 2: as which is basically like what you call your marketing category.
- 20:14Speaker 2: So it's basically clubs have to have a minimum spend
- 20:17Speaker 2: in that category and a maximum spend and it's you know,
- 20:20Speaker 2: it's value adding to a players ability to help you
- 20:23Speaker 2: market the game, I guess. And then there's a third
- 20:26Speaker 2: category which is kind of your you're like your additional
- 20:29Speaker 2: service agreements which come through a lot of your your
- 20:32Speaker 2: sponsors and whatnot. So players might be targeted by a
- 20:36Speaker 2: sponsor to service a sponsor specifically, or that's as an example,
- 20:41Speaker 2: or you know, it might be a car sponsor or
- 20:43Speaker 2: something like that. That's outside of the vehicles that you're
- 20:46Speaker 2: entitled to have within the salary cap. And that's sort
- 20:49Speaker 2: of like your third category, which you don't have to
- 20:51Speaker 2: spend in, but you can if you so need to.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Or there's a so.
- 20:55Speaker 1: That marketing spend. For instance, so some clubs, if they've
- 20:58Speaker 1: got ten players, they've got eleven players, they're probably going
- 21:01Speaker 1: to try to use three or four of those players,
- 21:03Speaker 1: the most hope, high profile ones in a lot of
- 21:06Speaker 1: their marketing. And so that means that those players, this
- 21:11Speaker 1: is a consideration for those players that their image gets
- 21:15Speaker 1: used more. Would that be?
- 21:16Speaker 4: Is that?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Am I understand how correctly well?
- 21:18Speaker 2: I mean that in that in theory that in theory,
- 21:22Speaker 2: that's a really good way of theorizing what that category is.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But there are a certain number of hours that the
- 21:28Speaker 2: players are required to achieve under their total player payment,
- 21:32Speaker 2: so their salary, and then on top of that you
- 21:35Speaker 2: add the marketing. But you know, where you use the
- 21:38Speaker 2: hours and how you use them is sort of club specific,
- 21:42Speaker 2: but you know, so, so I mean it helps, it helps.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Category two helps category one, I guess is the best
- 21:49Speaker 2: way of looking at it. And they're important. I mean,
- 21:53Speaker 2: you know, like I can again share with you from
- 21:54Speaker 2: a fever perspective, like we don't get bums on seats.
- 21:57Speaker 2: You know, like we have a big venue, we have
- 21:59Speaker 2: to fill a lot of on seats, and we're pretty
- 22:01Speaker 2: good at doing it, but you know, we don't do
- 22:03Speaker 2: it without players contributing to marketing the game. And you know,
- 22:07Speaker 2: it's becoming tougher because players are asking for more to
- 22:12Speaker 2: do less, right, So it's so, you know, like that
- 22:15Speaker 2: might be great to the players, but if you look
- 22:17Speaker 2: at it from a club perspective, it becomes increasingly more
- 22:19Speaker 2: difficult for a club when you're still trying to achieve
- 22:22Speaker 2: the same outcome, but the people that you're required to
- 22:26Speaker 2: use you have less access to unless you start paying
- 22:29Speaker 2: them in addition to that access. So once they're hours
- 22:33Speaker 2: are complete, then there's a requirement for the clubs to
- 22:35Speaker 2: pay on top of that. Again, you know, money doesn't
- 22:37Speaker 2: come on trees, so this balancing act through the CPA
- 22:40Speaker 2: is always going to benefit and hurt in different ways.
- 22:44Speaker 2: So then when you're building your list within that salary cap,
- 22:48Speaker 2: there are different there are different methodologies that clubs might use.
- 22:52Speaker 2: So there's a divide and concer methodology, which basically says,
- 22:55Speaker 2: you know, like we just kind of take everyone on
- 22:57Speaker 2: equal measures or there's a marque coach, which I think
- 23:00Speaker 2: most clubs or most sports would commonly use, which basically
- 23:04Speaker 2: is you hunt down your marquees, you pay them, and
- 23:06Speaker 2: then you know, you build the rest of your list out.
- 23:09Speaker 2: There's a and that's kind of prioritization approach, you know,
- 23:13Speaker 2: so you know, once you know what your marketes are
- 23:15Speaker 2: going to cost you, then you kind of have to
- 23:16Speaker 2: prioritize what's next.
- 23:18Speaker 3: And then you've also.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Got to probably find a number of rookies that sit
- 23:22Speaker 2: within your system that sit around that sort of base
- 23:25Speaker 2: base level as well. And I think the best part
- 23:27Speaker 2: of the latest CPA has been the increase of the
- 23:30Speaker 2: base salary. So you know, we're pushing we're pushing our
- 23:33Speaker 2: least paid athletes up. But that in itself, because we
- 23:37Speaker 2: haven't had the biggest increase at the top level, that's
- 23:40Speaker 2: got a bit of a squeezed effect through this latest
- 23:43Speaker 2: I guess salary cap or mismanagement build. And so some
- 23:47Speaker 2: clubs that might have been pressing on the precipice and
- 23:51Speaker 2: now I've had their base lifted are probably under a
- 23:53Speaker 2: bit of pressure and so and I'm aware of that
- 23:56Speaker 2: through a couple of clubs. So but again, it's kind
- 24:00Speaker 2: of a good thing that the base has gone up,
- 24:03Speaker 2: is it.
- 24:04Speaker 1: This might not be I don't know if this is
- 24:06Speaker 1: in the public to make Is it the same salary
- 24:07Speaker 1: cap for all a clubs? Do they all have the
- 24:09Speaker 1: same dollar figure that they have to work to.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Same there's no same dollar figure within that first and
- 24:14Speaker 2: second category where there's that minimum maximum spend. Yeap. The
- 24:18Speaker 2: third category has the same maximum dollar figure, but not
- 24:20Speaker 2: a requirement. There's a zero figure, so you don't have
- 24:23Speaker 2: to spend within that category.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Okay, but what you might find then for clubs that
- 24:27Speaker 1: sit in a town with a higher cost of living
- 24:30Speaker 1: like Sydney or Perth, that that third category, whether you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: those same cities might have more opportunities with different arrange
- 24:38Speaker 1: of sponsors and things, so that that can be made
- 24:41Speaker 1: up for there or.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Tragic historically that comment historically, Carolyn, that comment probably sat
- 24:47Speaker 2: true current day and the pressure on the system and
- 24:52Speaker 2: list management probably speaks to the fact that that third
- 24:55Speaker 2: category is fundamentally being used by all clubs. Yeah, and
- 25:00Speaker 2: pretty significantly. So we're using money, we're using money, we're
- 25:05Speaker 2: having to use money, We're having to find ways to
- 25:08Speaker 2: use third categories to get to land cliots.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It's the beast.
- 25:14Speaker 4: So God, there's an alternative way, is there?
- 25:17Speaker 2: Not?
- 25:17Speaker 4: Like, so if you look at the methodology to perhaps
- 25:20Speaker 4: you sign your market player, then you fit in whoever
- 25:23Speaker 4: else you can around it? Is there also a bit
- 25:25Speaker 4: of a bit of a methodology where you actually get
- 25:29Speaker 4: the best players you can for the minimum and then
- 25:32Speaker 4: you look at what's left and then like you build
- 25:34Speaker 4: from the bottom up.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Is that do some clubs take that approach?
- 25:39Speaker 2: Look, I'm not aware, Liz, and it's actually it's actually
- 25:42Speaker 2: not a bad approach. But the problem you've got with
- 25:44Speaker 2: that approach is if you're taking the best players you
- 25:47Speaker 2: can for the minimum, but then you still need something
- 25:51Speaker 2: above that as you go and then you need.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Your match winners.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Right, So do you instead of having one big market player,
- 25:56Speaker 4: do you have maybe three match winners? And I don't know,
- 26:00Speaker 4: Like it's really interesting. Do you think from the top
- 26:02Speaker 4: down or the bottom up?
- 26:03Speaker 2: Again? So you know data drives a good percentage of
- 26:08Speaker 2: well it should data. Data gives you a lot of information, right,
- 26:12Speaker 2: So when you're talking about hat because my question you were,
- 26:15Speaker 2: how do you know who those players are? So you
- 26:17Speaker 2: have to know who those players are through a bit
- 26:19Speaker 2: of data and understanding and comparison across clubs, et cetera.
- 26:23Speaker 2: And so they sort of sit in that middle category
- 26:27Speaker 2: where they're above rookie rookie being you know, maybe first
- 26:29Speaker 2: year plays in or players that have less number of
- 26:33Speaker 2: games or might be sitting as peripherals, you know, plays
- 26:36Speaker 2: nine and ten within your list that get don't get
- 26:38Speaker 2: a lot of court time, and so there's kind of
- 26:40Speaker 2: a category of plays that you could probably drop into that.
- 26:43Speaker 2: But then some of those players are also players where
- 26:45Speaker 2: you like go but like take Lily Graham as an example,
- 26:49Speaker 2: so sits in the list at the Melbourne Vixen's or
- 26:52Speaker 2: even Olivia Wilkinson that gives that Fever. There are probably
- 26:55Speaker 2: two players that are out there that you kind of
- 26:57Speaker 2: go minimal minutes, probably not costing the earth for clubs,
- 27:02Speaker 2: but have unbelievable potential and so they can be hunted
- 27:07Speaker 2: by clubs pretty quickly that are looking for that have
- 27:10Speaker 2: space to give opportunities. Whether they go or don't, that's
- 27:14Speaker 2: up to them based on what they think. But then
- 27:16Speaker 2: at the same time, as an example, Fever might want
- 27:19Speaker 2: to hold on to a lib Vixens might want to
- 27:21Speaker 2: hold onto a lily Gram.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:22Speaker 2: I'm not telling you that that's the case. I'm just
- 27:24Speaker 2: giving them as really good examples. But you might be
- 27:26Speaker 2: in a game where a club sees opportunity and has spend,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and so they then kind of move into that middle
- 27:33Speaker 2: category that then you're referencing. So yeah, it's an interesting
- 27:37Speaker 2: it's an interesting scenario. I mean again, it's very like
- 27:42Speaker 2: I look at the Adelaide Thunderbirds and their list is
- 27:44Speaker 2: an exceptional list in the modern day game, where they've
- 27:48Speaker 2: got some really good quality at young age, like when
- 27:53Speaker 2: you know they're across the board there the age of
- 27:56Speaker 2: their players, their average age sits very low for the
- 28:00Speaker 2: talent and their ability to win premierships. For me, is
- 28:05Speaker 2: probably the best list, but it'll also be one of
- 28:07Speaker 2: the most hunted lists.
- 28:08Speaker 1: You'd be hard and hard too, like hard to hold lists.
- 28:13Speaker 1: If you're young and you've gone in and been a magical,
- 28:16Speaker 1: bloody superstar, you're then going to want a bit more
- 28:19Speaker 1: of the pie. But I don't think like the salary
- 28:22Speaker 1: cap doesn't increase if you've won a Grand Final, does it?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Also, two players and management then start to unlearn and
- 28:30Speaker 2: understand values, right, So there used to be, and I
- 28:33Speaker 2: don't think it exists as much anymore. But there used
- 28:35Speaker 2: to be a bit of a theory around if you
- 28:37Speaker 2: played for the Diamonds, roughly kind of a range of
- 28:39Speaker 2: what a Diamonds player might have sat in, but I
- 28:42Speaker 2: think that's gone out the window, to be honest with you,
- 28:45Speaker 2: same international Some internationals come in and demand a high
- 28:49Speaker 2: price immediately without any I guess, proven no evidence of success.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Other internationals come in and you can get them at
- 28:57Speaker 2: rock bottom prices, but very quickly when your premierships and
- 29:01Speaker 2: their values should go up very quickly, but it depends
- 29:03Speaker 2: whether or not it can be afforded. And then also
- 29:07Speaker 2: a lot of internationals will come in and don't want
- 29:10Speaker 2: to look like they're leaving clubs off the back of
- 29:12Speaker 2: one years, you know, being so good. And then yeah,
- 29:15Speaker 2: so I.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Can't imagine the Elmeray Vanderberg Elmy Association this year would
- 29:21Speaker 1: be very interesting.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I don't know what.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I don't know what the Thunderbird's got el Maray for, right,
- 29:25Speaker 2: and I would imagine a reasonable price they would have
- 29:28Speaker 2: got her for, but what she's proven to be worth
- 29:30Speaker 2: and whether they can hold her. And I think the
- 29:32Speaker 2: Adelaide the Thunderbirds will hold her, but that also becomes
- 29:35Speaker 2: part of el Moray's journey forward.
- 29:37Speaker 3: And el Moray is probably.
- 29:39Speaker 2: You could tell elm Ray was a very happy athlete.
- 29:42Speaker 2: The Adelaide Thunderbirds. They've done everything for her, and money
- 29:46Speaker 2: isn't everything. And I would imagine that el Moray would
- 29:50Speaker 2: be staying at the Adelaid Thunderbirds. That probably had to
- 29:52Speaker 2: increase his salary, but potentially she could have earned a
- 29:55Speaker 2: lot more money elsewhere, but she would be doing I
- 29:58Speaker 2: would imagine if I was her manager, I'd be saying,
- 30:00Speaker 2: stay put because you want to. You want to tell
- 30:04Speaker 2: the club that's given you the greatest opportunity and also
- 30:07Speaker 2: developed a game and also made her feel a very
- 30:10Speaker 2: cup because she was a pretty shy athlete. She spoke
- 30:12Speaker 2: openly about that when she came in. So there's a
- 30:14Speaker 2: lot of other reasons, Like you know, some players move
- 30:17Speaker 2: for money. Some players down the track decide I need
- 30:21Speaker 2: to move for money because I'm getting close to the
- 30:22Speaker 2: end of my career. I'm going to make what I can,
- 30:24Speaker 2: doesn't matter where I play, and other players will come
- 30:27Speaker 2: in and over time learn Okay, maybe you know, I
- 30:30Speaker 2: might have to move for money, but a lot of
- 30:32Speaker 2: players stay because they're happy and they're comfortable, and you know,
- 30:37Speaker 2: al Morele probably one of those.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Well, I mean it's and it's a big thing to
- 30:41Speaker 1: the still young people, most of these. So it's like okay,
- 30:44Speaker 1: now go and move, you know, for I look at
- 30:46Speaker 1: Elmmere for instance, and it's like you've moved away from
- 30:48Speaker 1: your country, so you've moved into a town. Adelaide is
- 30:51Speaker 1: a smaller town, so I think relatively easier to transition
- 30:54Speaker 1: into and sort of find find your place. And then
- 30:58Speaker 1: it's like, well do you want to move again? And
- 31:00Speaker 1: it's like, well, I've got a way up then what
- 31:03Speaker 1: that is and how that is? And then there's other
- 31:05Speaker 1: players obviously who it's like, well I can't move. I've
- 31:08Speaker 1: got a family here, so we all need jobs. Then
- 31:11Speaker 1: I mean, well presumably your children don't need jobs. But
- 31:13Speaker 1: you know, like yeah, there's there's a lot of balance,
- 31:17Speaker 1: lots to consider.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And the other thing that makes recruitment really well either
- 31:23Speaker 2: a interesting, b it becomes part of your strategy or
- 31:26Speaker 2: c sometimes really difficult for clubs is when players are
- 31:31Speaker 2: looking for combinations and so when they've got higher achievements
- 31:37Speaker 2: in mind, they start to look at well, if I
- 31:40Speaker 2: can go and play alongside this player, or I've heard
- 31:43Speaker 2: this players going, and so all of a sudden they
- 31:45Speaker 2: start moving with with longer term vision in mind, and
- 31:49Speaker 2: not a lot you can do about that. So that's
- 31:51Speaker 2: the other thing that can sometimes shape decisions of players.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And like I look at Shmier, Stirling Humphrey and Latanya
- 31:59Speaker 1: Wilson's that they play really well together. I looked at
- 32:02Speaker 1: Grace White and Grace Weki this year and I wonder,
- 32:04Speaker 1: in this new world, are those players talking to one
- 32:08Speaker 1: another and saying, let's together, try to go somewhere else
- 32:11Speaker 1: where they have that exceptional connection with another player.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's also like you know, players move for future
- 32:17Speaker 2: diamonds opportunities, players move to feed a different style of
- 32:21Speaker 2: shooter play. Like there's a whole bunch of things.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Look, I'm trying to throw.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Everything out at you to and I'm not saying that
- 32:28Speaker 2: that's currently happening in the system, but these are the
- 32:30Speaker 2: things that happen that Again, like I spoke earlier on
- 32:33Speaker 2: Wednesday around the jess Answers scenario and that you know,
- 32:36Speaker 2: there's so much information.
- 32:38Speaker 3: It's a club that you have to take into consideration.
- 32:40Speaker 2: It's it's not an easy process. And again, Lizzy, we're
- 32:44Speaker 2: talking about ten players.
- 32:45Speaker 3: You know, there's not there.
- 32:47Speaker 2: We're not talking about a lot.
- 32:49Speaker 3: There's not a lot to play with.
- 32:50Speaker 4: No, And like the other thing we haven't spoken about
- 32:53Speaker 4: is the fact that you know the Giants next year
- 32:57Speaker 4: will be something different. So but we know that their
- 33:01Speaker 4: coaching staff has been set. But I wonder if players
- 33:04Speaker 4: are looking at what se and have done with MAVs
- 33:07Speaker 4: and gone, I really like the way they've gone about that,
- 33:09Speaker 4: I'm going to do that, or if they go, oh,
- 33:11Speaker 4: that's still a bit up in the air.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 33:13Speaker 4: I would love to know after the event when you
- 33:15Speaker 4: speak to players, did any of that play a part
- 33:19Speaker 4: in their decision making, because I think that's really interesting
- 33:22Speaker 4: as well. So, yeah, it is fascinating and it's just
- 33:25Speaker 4: fascinating to get it. I guess a bit of an insight.
- 33:27Speaker 4: So thanks Gordyre. Just about your methodology, there's always a
- 33:31Speaker 4: methodology when you've got a finite amount of resources, about
- 33:34Speaker 4: how you allocate those resources across a number of players
- 33:37Speaker 4: to develop the right list and a little bit of
- 33:40Speaker 4: magic and your match winners and your domestics who do
- 33:44Speaker 4: the hard yacker and make everybody else look good.
- 33:46Speaker 3: And then there's the intangibles.
- 33:48Speaker 4: And I know you've got a ton of data, but
- 33:50Speaker 4: you also want people who are great team players and
- 33:52Speaker 4: who are good for club culture, and who are hype
- 33:56Speaker 4: girls and that sort of stuff. So there's a bit
- 33:58Speaker 4: of thinking that goes around that that maybe isn't are
- 34:00Speaker 4: driven I'm.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, oh no, like yeah, it's the you're looking
- 34:04Speaker 2: for the holistic athlete that's ideally you're hoping to get.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I would imagine all clubs do their due diligence. It's
- 34:10Speaker 2: not just oh, look, she shoots this much or she
- 34:13Speaker 2: has this many intercepts. You also want to get an
- 34:15Speaker 2: understanding to the best that you can try and understand
- 34:19Speaker 2: beyond just speaking directly to the athlete or their manager,
- 34:22Speaker 2: which often comes at times with a bias viewpoint, but
- 34:26Speaker 2: you sort of want to get a holistic understanding of
- 34:28Speaker 2: an athlete and how much of.
- 34:30Speaker 1: A chance do you get to do that, so so
- 34:32Speaker 1: you know, through through the year you're with Fever, you
- 34:35Speaker 1: played the other teams twice, you know, how much do
- 34:39Speaker 1: you get to know players from the other team as
- 34:41Speaker 1: a person and get a sense of their vibe and I.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Think you know that's where your relationships are really important.
- 34:48Speaker 2: I think you know, you want to make sure on
- 34:50Speaker 2: this management teams that you've got people that have good
- 34:53Speaker 2: connections both here in Australia and of course internationally as well, right,
- 34:57Speaker 2: so that you can seek information where possible. And I
- 35:01Speaker 2: know I can tell you know we've we certainly have
- 35:04Speaker 2: gone on a journey as a club historically where I think,
- 35:07Speaker 2: you know, potentially we didn't do as much as we
- 35:09Speaker 2: should and now we're probably a club that goes overboard,
- 35:13Speaker 2: you know, to try and truly understand.
- 35:15Speaker 3: But then there's all I was going to say.
- 35:16Speaker 2: There's also the other part of it is, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 2: you can spend a whole bunch of time on an
- 35:20Speaker 2: athlete trying to get an understanding of them, and then
- 35:23Speaker 2: you think they're coming, and they hold you and hold
- 35:25Speaker 2: you and hold you, and then eventually they don't come,
- 35:27Speaker 2: and then you know you kind of know where you
- 35:30Speaker 2: want to go next. But unfortunately, because of the time
- 35:32Speaker 2: you've been held on a particular player's decision, you go
- 35:36Speaker 2: to what's next and they're.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Gone as well.
- 35:37Speaker 2: So so I would I would be very in what
- 35:40Speaker 2: I know of where lists are landing. I would be
- 35:43Speaker 2: very confident to say very few clubs will land with
- 35:47Speaker 2: what they initially set out for. Yeah wow, And this
- 35:51Speaker 2: is should be we should point out this is the
- 35:53Speaker 2: last time we hope it will be like this. The
- 35:54Speaker 2: other club's other players can sign multi year contracts across
- 35:58Speaker 2: multiple CPAs. This is the last time, right that we
- 36:01Speaker 2: end up in this position. So it's sort of a
- 36:04Speaker 2: bit like I feel for athletes as well. We've spoken
- 36:07Speaker 2: a lot about clubs.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I feel for athletes as well, because I'm sure that
- 36:11Speaker 4: there's athletes out there who want to go somewhere, but
- 36:15Speaker 4: they're waiting for a domino to fall elsewhere. So their
- 36:17Speaker 4: whole life is being held up and they don't know
- 36:20Speaker 4: where they're going because they're waiting for somebody else to
- 36:22Speaker 4: make a decision that first domino to fall. So you know,
- 36:25Speaker 4: it's tough, really tough for them as well. So as
- 36:28Speaker 4: much as it gives us lots to talk about, I
- 36:29Speaker 4: actually feel like it's not great for anyone, and I'm
- 36:32Speaker 4: looking forward to this not being the case anymore. I mean,
- 36:35Speaker 4: it is a part of sport, and it's not unique.
- 36:37Speaker 2: It happens in other sport as in contracting exists in
- 36:41Speaker 2: all sports, right, but unfortunately for us, it's this predicament
- 36:44Speaker 2: historically where everyone's come off contract.
- 36:46Speaker 3: And you're right, hopefully we won't have to do this again.
- 36:49Speaker 2: But what I was going to say to you is,
- 36:51Speaker 2: you know, there are circumstances, and I can tell you
- 36:54Speaker 2: there are circumstances that you are going to hear about
- 36:56Speaker 2: where players have been let go by clubs and they're
- 37:00Speaker 2: shitting themselves and they're forced to take like the only
- 37:05Speaker 2: contract that they can get, which means they're going to
- 37:07Speaker 2: have to move, and all of a sudden they're weighing up. Buddie. Hell, look,
- 37:10Speaker 2: I've got to find a way to shift gears here
- 37:13Speaker 2: in both my you know, my netball life, my partner's life,
- 37:16Speaker 2: my work circumstances.
- 37:19Speaker 3: So it's it.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Can be really daunting. It's dawning across the board. And
- 37:24Speaker 2: that's we're speaking about players. What about what about staff
- 37:29Speaker 2: as well? You know, like it's stuff stuff change as well.
- 37:32Speaker 2: I mean, we saw the signing of Maddie Brown going
- 37:34Speaker 2: to assistant coach at the Sunshine Coast Lightning, which I
- 37:37Speaker 2: think is like I really do think Maddie's got a
- 37:40Speaker 2: great young but great coaching head on it, and so
- 37:43Speaker 2: I think this is an enormous pick up for the
- 37:45Speaker 2: Sunny Coast. But can you imagine the conversations going on
- 37:49Speaker 2: behind the scenes between the Sunshine Coast Lightning and Maddie,
- 37:52Speaker 2: because Mattie is now lifting her family up from Melbourne
- 37:55Speaker 2: to move up to the Sunny Coast, and I don't
- 37:58Speaker 2: think Maddie would be moving with a short vision in mind.
- 38:01Speaker 2: So then you go a hold on, there's there's just
- 38:03Speaker 2: so much that plays out. It's it's a really tough
- 38:06Speaker 2: time in our sport. It's tough for the fans because
- 38:09Speaker 2: you know, they like certain players and certain players land
- 38:12Speaker 2: in different.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's great for the fans, but it's bad.
- 38:16Speaker 3: You two.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I've sitting here thinking, yeah, but I love it.
- 38:20Speaker 2: It's like this every day.
- 38:22Speaker 1: It's like, what it's I think it's I It's so
- 38:27Speaker 1: stressful for everyone, but also so exciting. I love the
- 38:31Speaker 1: fact that next year it's sort of almost like how
- 38:34Speaker 1: are we how are we going at the beginning of
- 38:36Speaker 1: the year to go, oh, what's the ladder going to
- 38:38Speaker 1: look like at the end of the year, because it's
- 38:40Speaker 1: going to be so different. It's not like we can go, oh, well,
- 38:43Speaker 1: what happened last year is is blah, And I don't know.
- 38:47Speaker 1: I think it's really exciting and it's a I'm going
- 38:51Speaker 1: to savor it as the last time that our sport
- 38:53Speaker 1: has to go through this trauma.
- 38:55Speaker 3: But my group.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Chats everyone any tiny little, completely unsubstantiated sniff of the
- 39:04Speaker 1: rumor which is made up by someone who wants the
- 39:07Speaker 1: top and is doing a Sue Gordion manifesting things out
- 39:11Speaker 1: into the world. And here's John Stevens walking into the
- 39:15Speaker 1: Conas Club to sit next to her, you know that
- 39:17Speaker 1: where we're all doing that, and it's just it's so
- 39:20Speaker 1: much fun. But it is that whole nature of haores
- 39:23Speaker 1: of vacuum, doesn't We don't have the information yet, so oh,
- 39:26Speaker 1: let's just make some stuff up.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, yeah, I think we're going to have
- 39:31Speaker 2: a couple of very exciting weeks ahead. And then as
- 39:34Speaker 2: clubs start to announce, and then you settle into you
- 39:38Speaker 2: settle into your new look team and your new look players,
- 39:41Speaker 2: and you know, clubs, all fans of clubs shoot embrace, right,
- 39:45Speaker 2: and that's that's the reality. And for some clubs, or
- 39:49Speaker 2: for most clubs, they'll hope to get the list that
- 39:51Speaker 2: they want, but knowing that probably there's players that sit
- 39:53Speaker 2: within some of their lists that you know, we're going
- 39:56Speaker 2: to have to learn about pretty quickly because it wasn't
- 39:58Speaker 2: part of their plan.
- 39:59Speaker 3: And that's that's reality.
- 40:01Speaker 2: We're going to have to go to a break.
- 40:02Speaker 1: But it would be remiss of us not to talk
- 40:04Speaker 1: about what's happening with the Giants. And I know a
- 40:07Speaker 1: lot of Giants fans, particularly the foundation members who've been
- 40:10Speaker 1: there for ten years, are feeling are feeling sad. I'm
- 40:15Speaker 1: really sad. I'm sad that we're losing all of that heritage.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I really hoped that we could have kept the name,
- 40:21Speaker 1: given that we didn't invent the bloody name anyway, AFL.
- 40:24Speaker 1: It's like it's been lifted from another sport. But whatever,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I understand, fresh start and look at what has happened
- 40:30Speaker 1: with the MAVs in the last three years. I love it.
- 40:32Speaker 1: It's really exciting. But I just and impassion plea to
- 40:36Speaker 1: Giants members get behind the new what's it called the
- 40:41Speaker 1: new club? Yeah, get behind whatever it is. Join early,
- 40:48Speaker 1: you know, get the merch and lean into it because
- 40:54Speaker 1: it is I'm very sad about the loss of that heritage,
- 40:57Speaker 1: but let's try to keep that heritage and go. So
- 41:00Speaker 1: this is the new iteration of the Giants and and
- 41:03Speaker 1: maybe try to remember that, but build it together like
- 41:07Speaker 1: it's it's it's very exciting times. And yeah, you're not
- 41:13Speaker 1: gonna we need them. We need them to do well.
- 41:15Speaker 1: We all need this club to do well. We need
- 41:18Speaker 1: eight strong clubs so we can then build to ten
- 41:21Speaker 1: strong clubs. That's it has to happen.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Well, here's a little insight. Their list is looking very impressive.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Oh, very little teaser from the g train.
- 41:34Speaker 1: That's very exciting. There is talk on the No Dribble
- 41:37Speaker 1: pages to what should it be. We have a lot
- 41:39Speaker 1: of clubs named after birds, so of course this is
- 41:42Speaker 1: a little bit tongue in chick The b Bin Chickens,
- 41:45Speaker 1: Western City Bin Chickens, Eastern Rosella's has got a bit
- 41:48Speaker 1: of a run sleep because that's Daryl Milton hitting the
- 41:51Speaker 1: zeitgeist there for us. And but yeah, well I'm sure
- 41:55Speaker 1: come up with a a fab new identity. And the
- 41:58Speaker 1: one thing I won't be sad is to see Gea
- 42:01Speaker 1: the Giant gone.
- 42:03Speaker 3: I look at that unicorn the MAVs have and go.
- 42:05Speaker 1: This is a new exciting day for us to give
- 42:09Speaker 1: dear gea a rest.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Can I just say though, my understanding is that one
- 42:17Speaker 4: of the critical components of this of the franchise, it
- 42:19Speaker 4: will be based in Western Sydney and based out of Blacktown.
- 42:23Speaker 4: I went to school at Blacktown. I am so. I
- 42:26Speaker 4: was so excited when I heard that, because that is
- 42:29Speaker 4: just a growth center of Sydney. It's a great place
- 42:33Speaker 4: to be, so just world on to se and for going.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Yet we're staying in Western Sydney, and I think that's
- 42:38Speaker 4: just so important.
- 42:38Speaker 3: It's such a great area.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Well, but said, it's a smart move, right, It's just
- 42:43Speaker 2: a smart move. It's smart move, smart move as a business,
- 42:47Speaker 2: smart move understanding the Sydney demographics, understanding capture zone, trying
- 42:54Speaker 2: to find a way to have real clear separation from
- 42:57Speaker 2: their crosstown rivals.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and as Swifts really grew out of Kringa, which
- 43:03Speaker 4: is north northern Sydney. So I think it's like I
- 43:06Speaker 4: think back I was reading about the fact that they're
- 43:08Speaker 4: going to be based at Blacktown, I thought, my god,
- 43:10Speaker 4: like when I was an eighteen year old and just
- 43:13Speaker 4: sort of starting to come through, I would have been
- 43:16Speaker 4: beside myself to think that there was a professional netball
- 43:18Speaker 4: team like in my backyard, and that's it's such a
- 43:22Speaker 4: massive backyard, like it's the fastest one of the fastest
- 43:25Speaker 4: growing popular population areas in Australia. So I just think
- 43:28Speaker 4: it's terrific. And I think there's a whole lot of
- 43:30Speaker 4: young women out of Blacktown in Western Sydney now going hah,
- 43:34Speaker 4: there's a team for us.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, amazing.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Well it's for me too. The day that memberships go
- 43:38Speaker 1: on sale for the new franchise, I will be buying one.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I have been a Giant's member for several years, you know,
- 43:43Speaker 1: as well as as well as the Swifts. But I
- 43:45Speaker 1: am going to be getting on board with this and
- 43:48Speaker 1: then I'm going to be a pain in the ass
- 43:50Speaker 1: until the end of time by going well, I was
- 43:52Speaker 1: one of the first members.
- 43:52Speaker 2: I got on board on the very first day, so
- 43:55Speaker 2: I will be doing that.
- 43:57Speaker 1: So look out for that. Anyway, let's take a little break.
- 44:12Speaker 2: This is Friday.
- 44:13Speaker 1: IM gonna watch a bit of TV on the weekend.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Yes, well, I just wanted to follow up on a
- 44:17Speaker 4: well a Julie Fitzgerald recommendation. Do you remember she set
- 44:21Speaker 4: me your message and said, look, I've just come back
- 44:23Speaker 4: from New Zealand and I watched ted Lasso. I think
- 44:26Speaker 4: your kids could watch it, and I think the only
- 44:29Speaker 4: thing you might need to explain to them is wanker.
- 44:32Speaker 4: What wanker means? And I thought, hang on, there's I mean.
- 44:35Speaker 4: The first time I watched it, the kids called it
- 44:37Speaker 4: that we wouldn't let them watch it, and they called
- 44:38Speaker 4: it the sweary show. I thought, waker is the last
- 44:40Speaker 4: thing I need to explain. And then as we watched it,
- 44:44Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, that's right. He constantly Ted Lasso constantly
- 44:48Speaker 4: gets called wanker, and so last night we'll see you
- 44:50Speaker 4: there and Austin goes, what's a wanker? I'm like, well,
- 44:55Speaker 4: and I've always it's always been my policy to explain
- 44:58Speaker 4: things using proper words and the scientific word, and so
- 45:03Speaker 4: I explained it to him and he was like, you
- 45:06Speaker 4: could just see his little ten year old brain going.
- 45:07Speaker 3: I wish I.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Didn't ask that question, but anyway, now he knows. So
- 45:12Speaker 4: look at his We have to stop and talk about
- 45:13Speaker 4: a lot of the jokes, explain a lot of theicks,
- 45:16Speaker 4: and it's funny to see what the fourteen year old
- 45:18Speaker 4: gets compared to what the ten year old gets.
- 45:21Speaker 3: But I forgot what a great written.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Show it was, and I forgot how mean Rebecca was
- 45:26Speaker 4: at the start. By the end, I loved her. But
- 45:29Speaker 4: it's really interesting for my daughter what she's loving, the
- 45:32Speaker 4: budding of the friendship between Kealy and Rebecca, and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 45:36Speaker 4: I forgot that. There's this beautiful female friendship theme that
- 45:40Speaker 4: goes through it really nicely. So we're about five episodes
- 45:44Speaker 4: in the children's language hasn't markedly deteriorated, but I think
- 45:48Speaker 4: there's still plenty of opportunity for that. But I think
- 45:51Speaker 4: Julie Fitzgerald was right seeing this is why she's a
- 45:53Speaker 4: great coach, because she started coaching me when I was
- 45:56Speaker 4: nineteen and now I'm fifty three and she's still giving
- 45:59Speaker 4: me advice.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Giving you a tie, you know what you should show
- 46:03Speaker 2: your kids, just if they're consented wondering that what Wenker is,
- 46:06Speaker 2: go and show them Leo Wenker from from Paul. Okay,
- 46:13Speaker 2: that's a strict understanding of a wanger.
- 46:15Speaker 3: I I should.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Actually, yeah, they'd Anna Waddingham, who plays with a show
- 46:22Speaker 1: called Ride, Ride or Die. And I've only seen a
- 46:25Speaker 1: couple of episodes of it, but it's very fun and
- 46:27Speaker 1: she plays an assassin and and it's all that remember
- 46:32Speaker 1: like in the eighties, all of the James Bond movies,
- 46:34Speaker 1: they seem to all start in the ski fields with
- 46:38Speaker 1: James Bond coming through and Peopleburg and it's got that,
- 46:41Speaker 1: and it's really slick production, but it starts in the
- 46:44Speaker 1: same sort of environment and it's really got this this
- 46:47Speaker 1: high end spy thing about it. It's it's been very fun.
- 46:51Speaker 4: She can sing, have you seen Yes, Yeah, she was
- 46:54Speaker 4: a singer first, wasn't she beltzer tune?
- 46:57Speaker 2: Now?
- 46:57Speaker 1: But she's amazing. You know, she has been looking for
- 47:00Speaker 1: a long time and she's one of these, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 1: overnight success twenty five years in the making type things.
- 47:06Speaker 1: So when she was in Game of Thrones in a
- 47:09Speaker 1: key role but not a huge role, like it was
- 47:11Speaker 1: only in a couple of episodes, but it was very
- 47:14Speaker 1: impactful role. And then she came into ted Lasso, relatively
- 47:18Speaker 1: unknown there, but just has really in the last few years.
- 47:22Speaker 1: And I think she's fifty two fifty three years, I
- 47:24Speaker 1: mean she looks thirty. So so that's not great for
- 47:28Speaker 1: the rest of us, Hannah, but happy for you. But
- 47:31Speaker 1: you know, she's amazing. She is having the real prime
- 47:35Speaker 1: of her career in her fifties now, having not had
- 47:39Speaker 1: this success as a young Angenou.
- 47:41Speaker 2: You know when she gets interviewed, though, like, this is
- 47:43Speaker 2: what I like about her. She's just you can tell
- 47:45Speaker 2: she's just herself. There's no airs or graces, like she
- 47:49Speaker 2: just speaks the truth, like she calls it out.
- 47:51Speaker 3: I love it.
- 47:52Speaker 2: I love it. I reckon she's she's great so well.
- 47:55Speaker 4: One of the things that she said recently in an interviews,
- 47:58Speaker 4: she was like, you know, people always talk about my
- 48:00Speaker 4: mustly arms and my physique.
- 48:01Speaker 3: Just move yourself. That's all you got to do.
- 48:03Speaker 4: And she said there's a lot to be said for
- 48:04Speaker 4: doing squats while you're brushing your teeth.
- 48:07Speaker 3: So guess what I do.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Twice I brush my teeth that I do my Hannah squats.
- 48:13Speaker 3: And I'm like, yeah, this is good. I can do
- 48:14Speaker 3: this good.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Also, if you brush your teeth with the other hand,
- 48:18Speaker 1: it's good for sort of building your your brain capacity.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Or stand on one foot while you don't get try
- 48:25Speaker 1: to practice balance things. So brush brushing teeth can be
- 48:27Speaker 1: a very busy thing if you're trying to do all
- 48:29Speaker 1: of these things. Stand on one foot in a squat
- 48:32Speaker 1: with your toothbrush in the other hand doing your keegels
- 48:36Speaker 1: at the same time.
- 48:37Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe your a.
