- 3:30Lawnclock as Nick Carter, brought to you by a new post war all Dutch
- 3:34cleanser. Our story begins outside an improving napis, which seventy years ago was
- 3:39considered beautiful and luxurious. Today, with its boarded windows and air of decay,
- 3:45it is ugly and arminable. Appalled. The s English looking man stands
- 3:47on the dark porch of the mansion, banging away with a heavy bronzeknocker.
- 3:58Do you hear me? Now? I'm going on a police was good?
- 4:02What's the night sleep? And here you are off? So you've got to
- 4:06help me get into this house? Are you crazy? That's mister nis Kamanough's
- 4:11house. Nobody goes in there, but Kavanaugh locked himself up on there fifteen
- 4:15years ago and he's never come out. I know that. But more he
- 4:17don't let nobody in, nobody except his housekeeper and his lawyer. But I'm
- 4:23otis Kevanaugh's lawyer, Leonard Kelsey. You say you're his lawyer. Send,
- 4:27I've got to get in type his house, even if I have to break
- 4:30it while you're not breaking in this and not as long as I've got anything
- 4:32to say about it. But I'm afraid mister keavanois meant with follows play of
- 4:35some kind. What makes you think that I phoned here half an hour ago.
- 4:39Offic Eleanor Drew. That's mister Kevanoi's housekeeper answered the phone so hot.
- 4:43She was very excited. He said that she and mister Keanaugh had been quarreling
- 4:46and she refused to let me speak to him. Eh. Then when I
- 4:49called back a few minutes later, no one answered the phone. That is
- 4:55funny seeing his time if the Kavanaugh never goes out of the house, Officer
- 4:58Peece, you is a woman of viol He hates mister Kavanaugh, even though
- 5:00she continues to work for him. Well, we've got to get him to
- 5:03you. She may have killed him. Did you try it all? Of
- 5:06course, not at all? With kept block, Officer, I M wait,
- 5:11no, ain't block. Now, Hey, maybe something funny is going
- 5:15on in here. Hold on, let's have a look. Yeah, let's
- 5:15except me find the like is no he oh he small And it looks like
- 5:25you've been worrying about the wrong party. It's the housekeeper that's met with file
- 5:28play mister Kelthany. She's been murdered. Ke mu tell me the identity of
- 5:40the murderer is quite clear. His identity, yes, but not He's clear
- 5:44about it in other words, or do you want Nick to do is to
- 5:46find out as Kavanaugh is that at mister Kelsey's pretas leave this book. The
- 5:49police are quite capable when it comes to locating missing person's kelty, especially in
- 5:54a case like this. They can't see many places where Otis Kavanaugh can hide.
- 5:58Where'd you say that this book? That's a He's been cut off and
- 6:00everybody for the last fifteen years. I remember hearing about him when I was
- 6:04a kid. Yeah, I locked himself up in that old place that God
- 6:06to the broken heart, didn't they? Yes, mister Kevanaugh was jolted by
- 6:10the young woman he intended to marry. He's been a recluse ever since.
- 6:12Oh wasn't He also digested getting a career as a senior. I know the
- 6:15tabloids always referred to him as a hermit thrust. That's right. It was
- 6:18on the concert stage. Build is a high society ten. Yes, that's
- 6:21right. Now he's one of the murder What a wasted career, Yes,
- 6:28mister Cotton, I think it's tremendously important that we'll just be pound quickly you
- 6:32do, why, frankly? To prevent more murders. I don't believe.
- 6:36Oh this Kavanaugh is seen. No no, no, man who locks himself
- 6:41in a gloomy mansion and refuses to come out can be in full position of
- 6:44his faculties. But I'm very much afraid that though this arrangement has become permanent,
- 6:48in violent and there's real dangerous, it isn't caught my point. What
- 6:54do you say, mister Carter? Very well, mister Kelsey, I'll do
- 6:57my level best to find him, and I hope it won't be too late.
- 7:10So that's the kavan On mansion. How long is this houseman brought it
- 7:15up this way? Causey they ever? Suis winning too? Secuse him?
- 7:18And you and miss Drew were the only ones of Simon all those fifteen years.
- 7:23That's the only one. Oh that's Madison. Ah, hi, Maddie,
- 7:26we'll all be What are you doing here? Why mister Kelsey here hired
- 7:30me to lend a hand on the Drew killing any objection? A lot of
- 7:32good to do me to object? Okay, come on in. Thanks Maddie
- 7:38for the cordial invitation. Oh this is really a journey old place, isn't
- 7:44it. Yeah, this Drew dame may have called herself a housekeeper, but
- 7:47brother she never kept out and she result his private secretary is cook and his
- 7:51nurse as well. How she hated him. She hated him. You have
- 7:56to continue to work for him. Rather, this was a victis She wasn't
- 8:01the miser mist Peter her very well, I see, I was about himatic
- 8:05and the next room, next year old, I'll say, is that out
- 8:07an alarm for Kavanaugh? Yeah, we got every man on the force on
- 8:11the lookout for him. Had a chance that he's hiding somewhere in the house.
- 8:13He searched, they were insure the joint from top of the bottom.
- 8:16He's none in here. Well, it's here, got it right through the
- 8:24heart, isn't here? Yeah, huh yeah, Nick, he won't have
- 8:30any reason to believe it wasn't Kavanaugh who killed him. Which there's only one
- 8:33way that adds up. Now, Look, Kavanaugh don't budge out of the
- 8:37house for fifteen years, and then when he does bow, he leaves Uponty
- 8:41behind. To me, it's opening shut. Well, that sounds reasonable,
- 8:43Natt, especially since mister kelsey'spoken is too. Just a few moments before he
- 8:48died and she and Kavanaugh were having a quall you know what they were quarreling
- 8:50about. Kelsey. No, she didn't say, Uh, hey, why
- 8:54did you call Kavanaugh? Oh? It was about his once me ammuity chick.
- 8:58Is that it? Yes, mister Kevin O. His father left his
- 9:01money tied up in trust and to suceed in worth it. Oh. I
- 9:05called her late at night. I meant nothing to Miss Kevanaugh, and I'd
- 9:09been working late at my office, so I phoned to see whether he'd mind
- 9:13if I stopped by with his chick seeing a tip tomorrow morning. Couldn't you
- 9:16nail this? Waugh always insisted that I deliver it to it in prison.
- 9:20Uh huh, Noddy, did you find the murder weapon? A lot of
- 9:24sign of it? Least what about fingerprints? Boys will work it over.
- 9:26We'll have a report by more god. Well, what is if the only
- 9:31question is where Kavanaugh could be hiding him? Well, I might make one
- 9:35guess. We fold this in Miss Drew's pocketbook. By the telegram. Let's
- 9:39see, there's the d of Tavanah. There's arriving steamship one of the day
- 9:46on Monday, Monday. For that's today, I'll go straight to Granger's tourist
- 9:50camp on Highway forty seven, must see you Sian Oliver? Who's Oliver Coffey?
- 9:56Way, I don't know, mister Cuttter. I never heard this Kavanaugh
- 10:01mentioned anyone by that name. Well, whoever he is, what made him
- 10:03think Cava would leave the house even the meeting somewhere? I don't know,
- 10:07Maddy. There's one place where we might get the answer. Sure, stranger's
- 10:11Choris care right, come on, let's go Lock, Come on, Maddy,
- 10:24step on it. Look, Nick, I got it up to sixty
- 10:26now I want to get there in one piece. Okay, he hadn't been
- 10:31the fourth headed about Corning headquarters before we left the Kavanaugh place. Nick,
- 10:33How many times do I have to tell you I ain't one of youse private
- 10:37eyes. When I start going places, I got to let people know.
- 10:41Well, I suppose you're right, Maddy, Nick, what if you set
- 10:43the simon? If you get this Kavani? Oh, maybe we should have
- 10:48brought Chelsea along to identifyingent. I don't mind. I'd rather work without Kelsey
- 10:52around. Why you think he's nicked Stepan, I didn't say that on Mike.
- 10:56The whole deals as plain as the nose on my face. Even know
- 11:00the day how to fight Kavanaugh pucker and then beat it. And that's that.
- 11:03Maybe, Mary, maybe, But then again, Maddy, look at
- 11:07so headlights coming out in that side. He's cutting right hold of us,
- 11:11storm shooting at us watch shoes, but the fire shot out from under him.
- 11:28Matt. He tries to control the Coreneal mobile, but it's too late.
- 11:31Hand with Nick and Patsy huddle together in the back seat, the spinning
- 11:35car plunges into the bitch at the side of the road. We'll see what
- 11:37happens next in just a minute, and I'll back to the case of a
- 11:46Hermit thrush. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought you by a new post war
- 11:52all that splendor. As we pick up our story, Nick, Patsy and
- 11:56Sergeant Mattheson are just recovering from the shock of having their cars skid off road
- 12:00to high speed. You all right, all life? Look at this bump?
- 12:07What life is? Oh goy? Well, thanks Heaven. Whoever was
- 12:11shooting at us wasn't a better shot. I don't think those shots were meant
- 12:15to kill us. I was supposed to delay our arrival at Granger's camp.
- 12:18We certainly succeeded. We'll have to wait until morning to get out of this
- 12:22street. We can't wait until morning. I don't want to take accountant having
- 12:24a homicidal maniac like Kavanaugh running around ruse. Well, maybe we can hitch
- 12:28a ride after Grangers. That's that's what we're going to do, Maddie necessary.
- 12:31We'll come in dere and right. Come on, are you the proprietor
- 12:43of this purse camp? That's trade? I love, it's grangeous. My
- 12:48name is Nick Carter. This is Sergeant Mathieson of the homicide squad. Yeah,
- 12:52we're looking for a man who may have checked in here sometime yesterday.
- 12:56What was your fellow's name? Oliver? Was that he's last name? Oh?
- 13:00No, you have a registered sure, he's here's the book you books
- 13:05Timmy used to do see anything new? Yeah? Niles, Oliver Niles.
- 13:13And that's the only Oliver here. Where is he in? Like the cabin
- 13:20twenty six twenty sixty street on deck? Listen one till you lift. Thanks
- 13:24Granger. Okay, we shall see what we shall see. That's the Niles.
- 13:41That's the Nile those hope next. Nobody in there wanna be? The
- 13:46lights are on? How about looking in the windows? Thank you? Dumping
- 13:52for two lighters. I hope not. You can see inner this window here?
- 13:56Have you seen? Oh it's smoke that the guy laying on the floor,
- 14:03he looked a look at his face. Well that answers your question,
- 14:07Patter, we are too late. That man's dead. And you say you're
- 14:22not sure whether this man is Oliver or Niles Lander, No, no,
- 14:26I used to cut in. You sure can't tell much from his face,
- 14:31not after somebody shot him point blank with a shotgun. Hasn't been dead morning
- 14:37hour, Nick, Only there was some sort of identification on him. Take
- 14:41a look around, will you pat to go through everything? Who would gonna
- 14:43find? Okay, I don't get it, Nick, We already know who
- 14:48he is, Dewey, Why he was Oliver Niles? Of course? Perfectly
- 14:52clear? What happened? Yeah, well Kavanaugh found out where we were heading
- 14:56and beat us to the punch, took a couple of pot shops abbus on
- 14:58the road, and came out here and knocked rope Niles. God, why,
- 15:01Maddy, why? I don't know? He probably don't know that himself,
- 15:05didn't you yourself? Call him a homicidal media that's what? Oh a
- 15:13watch I see well something a great bullet Nick, Yeah, from m V
- 15:20to O C. Christmas nineteen thirty two. That stands for Otis Kavanaugh.
- 15:26Well, Maddy, what's this do to you? A neat middle theory?
- 15:31Oh brother, it's not sit into a cockcat, Nick. This guy ain't
- 15:35Oliver Niles at all. It's Otis Cavanaugh. Oh boy, we finally caught
- 15:39up with him. Nick Carti's office, Patty Bowne, this is it.
- 15:56I've just come from the morgue. Oh yes, mister Kelsey, will you
- 15:58tell mister Carter there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever about the men's identity it
- 16:03is I see. Well, thank you to Kelsey at Helen. Well,
- 16:10Mike, it looks as though you're out of a job, kelsee if enough,
- 16:14uh huh. And since we were hired just to find Kavanaugh, it
- 16:17looks as though we were about to be fired. That's me. I don't
- 16:19like I like it one little bit. What do you mean? Something wrong
- 16:23someplace? I don't see what's wrong? Tell me again, what happens that
- 16:29it's not from scratching. I think you will see. Well, Cavanaugh had
- 16:33a quarrel with Eleanor Drew and killed it on when he got out for the
- 16:36tourist camp, planning to lie low there. When he found out we were
- 16:40heading for the same place, he tried to stop us. But how did
- 16:41he find out where we were going? And why didn't he kill us when
- 16:47he had a chance. Well, and why didn't Nile shoot Cavanaugh in the
- 16:49face with a shotguns? The killers usually do that. No, of course
- 16:53not no, No, I'll pass you. There are too many holes,
- 16:56too many murders and attempted murders for no apparent there's something missing. I want
- 17:03to find Nick out the Tatty Bone. It's me, Patsy. Let me
- 17:07talk to Nick. I suppose you know Leonard Kelsey identified the body? Nick?
- 17:14Yeah, yeah, I just thought I checked with you before I gave
- 17:17the score to the papers. And what about the fingerprint fingerprints? Yes,
- 17:21you have a report in the ones you boys found in the Kavanaugh house.
- 17:23Oh those yeah? Any of them? Driver with a dead man? Oh
- 17:26they don't make none of them. No. I don't see why you're getting
- 17:30so hot and bothered about that. After all, the body's been identified by
- 17:33the man who knew Kavanaugh. Best luck matters. How could Kavanaugh live in
- 17:37that place for fifteen years and not leave a single fingerprint. Hey, you've
- 17:42got something there. I think I have, and I don't think we've found
- 17:47otis Kavanaugh. This Kavanaugh mansion is even spook here in the daytime, and
- 18:03it isn't nice. I don't worry. We want to go to be here
- 18:04long enough to take a look through the Tavanaugh private papers, see if we
- 18:07can find out who is Oliver Niles. Maybe maybe, yes, this looks
- 18:15might have been a study in here. Wind that crack and the shudder,
- 18:21Oh, I could have worn out of a man's eyes looking into that.
- 18:26There's no one there now, m Well, maybe the creepy old house is
- 18:33making me seeking to day. Okay, all right, let's have a look
- 18:37in this file cabinet. Oh, my goodness, makes millions to tape us.
- 18:44It'll take us for rabbit to go through all those. They're all old
- 18:47too, turning yellow ones. Oh. Here just scraped to me the reviews,
- 18:55the critics comments on Kavanaugh's day. Here are the concert to me back
- 19:00here at some society college. Oh, here's a picture of the whole family.
- 19:04Yes, readings from left right, Missus Roger Hobart, Mister Roger Hobart,
- 19:11mister, and missus James Niles Niles. Yes, and the two sons
- 19:15mister Oliver Niles and mister Otis kept Otis karenof the two sons, what does
- 19:22that mean? That's what it says, mister and missus James Niles and the
- 19:26two sons mister Oliver Niles and mister Otis Cavanaugh. Oliver Niles and Otis Kavanaugh
- 19:33were half brothers. Right. ODIs Kavanaugh's mother must have been married twice,
- 19:37the second time to a man named James Niles. Of course, look at
- 19:41that picture Otison's happened. It looks very much alive. What these means that
- 19:48the man we founded the tourist hands could have been Oliver Niles, Yes,
- 19:52could have been that. It also thinks how Chelsey could have been mistaken.
- 19:56I see it may explain a lot of miss to find out Tavanaughs. If
- 20:00we don't, who could be calling up here? I'm going to find out.
- 20:10I don't wonder where that porn is. It's over there in the alcohol
- 20:14end of the stairs. Oh, yes, I say it. I'll get
- 20:15it. Hello, I warn you to give up your investigation. Who is
- 20:22it? If you don't, you'll meet the same fate my housekeeper met your
- 20:29heartprop Yes, mine. This is Otis Kavanaugh. Hello, Hello, come
- 20:37up? And you heard what he said? Cavan must have That must be
- 20:42his face. I saw up the window. Then he went somewhere in your
- 20:45box. Wait wait wait, yes, of course is come on you got
- 20:52a hurry. Where are we going to trying to find Otis Kavanaugh? I
- 20:56think I know where he is? You crazy? Oldis Kavanaugh couldn't be down
- 21:10here in the selling You just talked to him on the phone. That wasn't
- 21:12Cavanaugh. How do you know it wasn't You don't remember how Oldis Kavanaugh was
- 21:18billed as a conscious singer. Yes, is a high society of Tanner's.
- 21:22What was it likely that a man who had John Tanner could speak in a
- 21:25deep bass voice like the one we heard on the phone. But that still
- 21:29doesn't prove that Kavanaugh is down here. Maybe he doesn't prove it that We're
- 21:33going to keep on looking. I have a feeling that the way ahead of
- 21:41thee I want down? Yeah, you done? I'm not My count is
- 21:52right. It's the murderer we've been looking for. Nicking Patty Wait Pensiley in
- 22:04the basement of the Old Kavanaugh mansion while someone descends the Fellar stairs, Whether
- 22:08or not gets the killer and who he is we'll find out in just a
- 22:11minute. Now for the conclusion of the case of a hermit crush. Today's
- 22:21adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by a new post war all that's cleanser
- 22:26huddled closely together in the basement of the old Kavanaugh mansion making tactic weight.
- 22:30If someone slowly descends the stairs here, I think you already know it.
- 22:42Why is not Otis Kavanaugh and all mister Keltys come on in, Kelsey and
- 22:52it's bowing too. What the world are you doing down here? Is I'm
- 22:56looking for Otis Kavanaugh? Is this You'll never find him here? You're mistaken,
- 23:02Kelsey. You found was great? Oh he is very down here,
- 23:07Yes, Nicole cad he's got a gun. My hunch was right at Kelsey.
- 23:11You and Ella Drew buried Cavanaugh down here fifteen years ago, knowing that
- 23:15won't do you any good. Now got cover and I'm going to kill you.
- 23:22I stand a sport. You have my secret now, that's why you
- 23:25killed Miss Drew and Oliver Niles. All right, I did Killdren Does matter
- 23:33that you two know now, because neither one of you will live to testify
- 23:37against me. I'm not so sure of that, Gelty, Okay, sagean
- 23:41madisone. It can come out. Now here's your killer. That's the same
- 23:52sus your fell for an old day. Looking around when you closed out in
- 23:56Madison, it wasn't within five miles at this place. They do it nearly.
- 24:02Our next job is to get our murderous little friend here down her headquarters
- 24:04and had him booked for murder. We'll make you well, right, I
- 24:15got a complete confession from Leonard Kelsey. Good, just as your figure,
- 24:19Nick, the whole story was a phony. Otis Kavanaugh never locked himself up
- 24:22in that house fifteen years ago. He died fifteen years ago. Yeah,
- 24:27apparently it was a natural death pat thing by Kelsey, who was the executive
- 24:32of the Kavanaugh State, saw a chance to keep on collecting Kavanaugh's large monthly
- 24:34annuity. That's true. But where did Eleanood drook me? Well, Kelsey
- 24:40apaly needed her help, first to burry Kavanaugh a cellar after he died,
- 24:44and second to maintain the fiction that orders for the live all those years.
- 24:48Well, I shouldn't see why he killed eleanor drew all right, I'll get
- 24:49back to that in just a minute. If he Oliver and Niles had been
- 24:52living in South America for twenty years. Yeah, so he, like everybody
- 24:56else, thought Kavanaugh was alive. But then when he returned to this country,
- 25:00Kelsey's game was threatened. He had to kill Niles, but the group
- 25:03game wouldn't go for that. That's right. She probably figured that fraud was
- 25:06one thing, murder another. So they quarreled and Kelsey killed it, and
- 25:08he saw a privot out for himself by claiming Kavanaugh killed it. All he
- 25:12had to do was murder Niles and identify Niles's body as Kavanaugh. That way
- 25:15the case would be closed. He thought the reason he came to me was
- 25:18to be sure Nile's body would be found. Yeah, but that telegram in
- 25:22the true woman's purse, didn't you know that would be found? Yeah,
- 25:26that's where he slipped up. Yeah, I thought she destroyed it. And
- 25:30Chelsea was the only one who could have known who were head with sall the
- 25:32tourist camp, wasn't he? That's right? And then there was that watch
- 25:36was the only identification in the cabin. Sure Kelsey claimed it there and that's
- 25:40what made me ask myself why somebody wanted me to think that Otis Kavanagh was
- 25:44dead? But what about that phone? Colin? Why did Chelsea call you
- 25:47because it he succeeded in killing me. He wanted you to testify that I
- 25:51had been threatened by cavanav Oh, Nick, I'll never forgive you for one
- 25:57thing. Why what's that that be? Not telling me that Otis was dead
- 26:00and for now pointing out his grave in the cellar. I didn't find his
- 26:03grave, that was all ablove. Sure well, I thought I was right,
- 26:08but I didn't know. I had to get Kelsey to fip his hands
- 26:11first. I'm sure Kavanaugh's grave is down there now, Yeah it is.
- 26:15Nick. We's gonna look good for you, Maddy. But Pety, don't
- 26:18ever accuse me of pulling out on you again. After all, you wouldn't
- 26:22be able to stand me if I were the kind of guy knows everything all
- 26:23the time. Nick Carter Master Detective, produced and directed by Jock McGregor,
- 26:51is controrighted by Freeden Smith's Publications Incorporated. Searlotte Manson is featured as Petty.
- 26:56Today's stript was written by Ken Pettis and Lou Scopio's original music is played by
- 27:03Henry Silvern. This program is fictional and any resemblance to actual persons living or
- 27:07dead is currently coincidental. This is Bob Martin saying, when Minnie count use
- 27:14new post war all that you cleanser. This is a mutual broadcasting system.
- 27:45Welcome back. Well, a nice little case and a good twist with him
- 27:51having actually been dead for so many years. Of course, Nick, and
- 27:55this episode has to do a double fake out, faking that Argent is on
- 28:00his way and also that he knows where the body is. So sometimes Nick
- 28:04Carter can just bluff his way through, apparently at any rate. I should
- 28:08also mention there were a couple lost episodes between last week's shows and this week's
- 28:15the Case of the Bobby Socks Racketeer and the Case of the Curious Countants Countess,
- 28:21and we've actually got five lost episodes between this week's show and next,
- 28:26so wow, these the episodes are getting kind of sparsely spaced here, all
- 28:33right. Well, on to some listener comments and feedback this regarding bold Venture.
- 28:40William comments over on Facebook, thank you for accepting my suggestion. Hope
- 28:45that others enjoyed this slight departure from a pure detective story and enjoyed the mix
- 28:49of mystery and action adventure. Adam's opening comments were most helpful and explaining the
- 28:55concept for the Bold Venture radio series. Well, thanks so much, William,
- 29:00I'm glad you enjoyed our presentation. Leo comments regarding the episode. While
- 29:07I do like this show, was it really necessary for the announcer to keep
- 29:12reminding us that it stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Becall, I think we know
- 29:18who's starting it. Well, I can only speculate on the reason that that
- 29:25is emphasized so much, And that's the reason why I would emphasize it,
- 29:30because I think people still even in the nineteen fifties, might go through the
- 29:36radio channels to see what was on. And if I didn't know what Bold
- 29:40Venture was, I wouldn't stop on a particular station where they said bold Venture's
- 29:45back. But if somebody said bold Venture starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Becall,
- 29:51that'd be another matter entirely. So I would guess that the reason it was
- 29:55repeated is in case somebody tuned in in the middle of the show, they
- 29:59would know what they were getting and have a reason to listen to the rest
- 30:03of it and maybe check their station times to find out when else it might
- 30:08be on. And then finally we have a comment from Joan who says,
- 30:14I enjoyed this episode of Bold Venture. I believe I've heard all of the
- 30:17shows too. This is a good series. Well thanks Joan, and the
- 30:22entire series of Bold Venture is available in pretty good quality audio if you go
- 30:26over to archive dot org. It used to be that there were only about
- 30:30thirty some episodes circulating a Bold Venture. Now that number is up to fifty
- 30:37seven, which is still short of the seventy eight that were made. But
- 30:41it's definitely worth listening to and a very interesting series if you're a fan of
- 30:48this very powerful Hollywood duo. All right, well, that will do it
- 30:53for today. We will be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Doller,
- 30:59and then make sure and join us again next Thursday for another episode of Nick
- 31:03Carter. In the meantime, I do encourage you to support our listener support
