- 0:43Search for Elon Musk podcast. Under NASA's Artemis campaign,
- 0:47the agency and its partners will send large pieces of equipment
- 0:50to the lunar surface to enable long term scientific exploration
- 0:53of the moon for the benefit of all humanity.
- 0:57Now, NASA's human landing systems provider, SpaceX and
- 1:00Blue Origin are beginning development of lunar Landers,
- 1:03the SpaceX, Starship and Blue Origin ship as well, for large
- 1:07cargo deliveries to support these needs.
- 1:09YES has contracted SpaceX and Blue Origin to provide landing
- 1:13systems to take astronauts to the Moon surface from lunar
- 1:15orbit beginning with Artemis 3. And that's going to be someplace
- 1:19between 2028 and 2030 right now, but probably going to slip a
- 1:25little bit later than that. Now, the agency has asked the
- 1:28two companies to develop cargo versions of their human landing
- 1:31Landers as an option under their existing contracts.
- 1:34The cargo variants are expected to land approximately 26,000 to
- 1:3833,000 lbs, or 12 to 15 metric tons of payload on the lunar
- 1:44surface and be in service no earlier than the Artemis 7
- 1:48mission. Now NASA spokesperson, the Human
- 1:52Landing Systems program manager at NASA's Marshall Space Flight
- 1:55Center in Huntsville, AL, Lisa Watson Morgan, said it's
- 1:59essential that NASA has the capability to land not just
- 2:02astronauts, but large pieces of equipment such as pressurized
- 2:06Rovers on the moon for maximum return on science and
- 2:09exploration activities. And she said, beginning this
- 2:13work now allow SpaceX and Blue Origin to leverage their
- 2:15respective human landing designs to provide cargo variance that
- 2:20NASA will need in the future. Not only will they be landing.
- 2:24Rovers. On the moon, but they'll also be
- 2:28landing habitats, possibly in the future too, and these Rovers
- 2:32could transport habitats around the moon's surface.
- 2:35Now. NASA expects the cargo versions
- 2:37of the company's Landers to be modified versions of their HLS
- 2:40human landing systems that are currently being developed for
- 2:43Artemis 3-4 and five, and modifications will include
- 2:46adjustments for payload interfaces and deployment
- 2:49mechanisms. And the cargo variants will not
- 2:51have human life support systems. They're going to be autonomous,
- 2:55flying to the moon with just cargo on them.
- 2:58And this initial work allows the companies to proceed with
- 3:01development for the cargo Landers through a preliminary
- 3:03design review, the step that establishes the basis for
- 3:07proceeding with detailed design. Now SpaceX is conducting its
- 3:11work under the next step, Appendix H contract, and Blue
- 3:14Origin is conducting its work under the next step, Appendix P.
- 3:18And NASA officially exercised the options out of those
- 3:21contracts in November of 2023 to begin work on the large COCAR
- 3:25Landers. Now with Artemis, NASA will
- 3:28explore more of the Moon than ever before, learn how to live
- 3:31and work away from home, and prepare for human missions to
- 3:35the Red Planet of Mars. And Artemis requires the best of
- 3:38International Space agencies, private industries like SpaceX
- 3:41and Blue Origin, and academia to establish the infrastructure for
- 3:45a long term scientific research and exploration.
- 3:48And as of now, SpaceX is currently building their massive
- 3:53Starship program in South Texas and they're doing the 4th launch
- 3:59of the Starship program in the coming weeks, possibly a month
- 4:04from now. So stay on the lookout for that.
- 4:07Blue Origin is developing their gigantic rocket as well, the New
- 4:10Glen, and also their Lander at the same time, and we're
- 4:14expecting a launch of New Glen sometime in the next fiscal
- 4:18year. It's going to be a wild time for
- 4:21rocket and spaceflight, so stay tuned for all of that.

- 4:34Now let's get back to the Starship program.
- 4:37It seems as if the Starship Flight 4 will be a massive
- 4:41improvement over Flight 3. Now with Flight 3, they launched
- 4:45the ship, they did the return maneuver for the booster, but
- 4:50they had to detonate the booster over the Gulf of Mexico because
- 4:53something wasn't going right. We're not exactly sure.
- 4:55SpaceX didn't tell anybody what happened, but we know that the
- 5:00booster did blow up under its own accord.
- 5:03Then after the booster. Met its own fate over the Gulf
- 5:07of Mexico. The ship continued on near the
- 5:09Indian Ocean and continued its mission and they did a a test of
- 5:15the Bay doors for Starlink satellite deployment and they
- 5:18also did a fuel. Test.
- 5:21At that point too, so it. Looks like.
- 5:23Flight 4 of Starship, which is coming up, like I said, in a few
- 5:26weeks, hopefully in a few weeks, probably a month, that'll do a
- 5:30similar flight path towards the Indian Ocean.
- 5:32They may stray off that a little bit because the FAA and SpaceX
- 5:35are working closely together to finalize the plans for the next
- 5:39mission, and the new Glen Rocket System is still under
- 5:43development right now. They haven't launched 1 yet, but
- 5:47they're hoping to possibly do one by the end of this year.
- 5:52So we're looking forward to that because when they can launch the
- 5:55rocket, then they can launch their lunar Rover, their lunar
- 5:59Lander, and they can also have variants of the rocket that can
- 6:03go into the outer solar system, which will be absolutely
- 6:06amazing. O these cargo missions for NASA
- 6:10are important for Blue Origin and also imortant for SpaceX,
- 6:13but most imortantly they are important for AU presence on the
- 6:18lunar surface. Hey, thank you so much for
