Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Miller & Condon 5-22-26
Transcript
- 0:16All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:19Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:21Network. Ken Miller solo for the next
- 0:24couple of hours. It's Trent Scott, the day off
- 0:26today, getting a little medical attention to that shoulder that
- 0:30he's been bothering him over the last week.
- 0:33So I will get you through the next couple of hours.
- 0:35In the next few minutes, our good friend, my good friend Bama
- 0:38Bob, who joins us during the football season.
- 0:41Well, there's no football season for me this year, so Bama's
- 0:44going to spend a little time here doing some of the stories
- 0:48that are percolating in college football.
- 0:51At about 10 minutes or so after after the noon hour, look
- 0:55forward to catching up with Bama.
- 0:57We'll do that. Mike Palm's going to join me at
- 0:59about 12:30, Off to Vegas we will go.
- 1:02The latest on Behind the COUNTER with Mike Palm, what he saw last
- 1:06night in the NHL, in the NBA. We'll do that.
- 1:09Some baseball stuff. And obviously, the contests have
- 1:12been announced and the contests are open, open in there
- 1:14accepting entries into Survivor, Million Millions and
- 1:18Grandissimo. So Mike Palm coming up here at
- 1:2112:30. If we have time in the first
- 1:23hour, we'll do the chicken coop contest.
- 1:26If not, we'll put that in our number three.
- 1:29I mean, our number 2, I beg your pardon, guessing that that's
- 1:32probably going to happen just before we slide out of here at
- 1:361:55 or thereabouts. So we will do the chicken coop
- 1:39at some time in our number 2. Tom Kaker will kick it off on
- 1:43Iowa and then Eugene repay on Iowa State.
- 1:46I saw Eugene's piece in the paper yesterday pursuant to the
- 1:49Seihawk game, that contract coming to an end in 2027 when I
- 1:53saw the headlines. I don't mind this ominous.
- 1:55I don't want this game to ever end.
- 1:56I love the game. I know that a lot of you don't,
- 2:00but I think it's fantastic for the state.
- 2:01I hope it never ends. I hope they play it every single
- 2:03year. And if I could wave my magic
- 2:06wand, if both teams are somehow in a spot to play in a bowl game
- 2:09despite having the fact they played in the regular season,
- 2:12I'm all for that as well. So that's the show here today.
- 2:15No picks at the end of it, as Trent is.
- 2:17I don't think he's going to send anything along.
- 2:19If he does, we'll read those on the air, his plays of the day.
- 2:24So Bam and Bob coming up. But I have a couple of minutes
- 2:26and and luckily Connor Ferguson is with me in studio today.
- 2:31He's behind the class doing the producing of the show, but very
- 2:33timely on his part with the passing.
- 2:36We don't do a lot of ton of NASCAR on the show, but we do
- 2:39have the NASCAR guy in the building sitting what 15 feet
- 2:43away from me. So why wouldn't I bring him in?
- 2:46So obviously this was 41 years old is, I mean, you don't have
- 2:50to tell anybody this, which is crazy that it's happened.
- 2:52It's awful. He's got two young boys and he
- 2:55raced last weekend. And then you saw the tweets
- 3:01earlier in the day yesterday that it started to sound more
- 3:05ominous as the day went on. Connor, that's how I first saw
- 3:09of it and I saw it. And I mean, there were people
- 3:13that were in the industry that would then respond to those
- 3:15tweets or put on a tweet of their own, kind of making it
- 3:19feel like he's probably not going to make it.
- 3:22When did you first become aware of it and what have you heard,
- 3:28if if anything? Yeah, so he's got a a young son
- 3:34named Braxton and the daughter I just wanted.
- 3:35To oh son and the daughter. Yeah, Lennox is the daughter's
- 3:38name and they had her actually through IVF and he's a huge
- 3:43propone, a huge voice in that space.
- 3:46And I think they have a foundation going on right now
- 3:49that people are donating to. I'll find the name of it to say
- 3:52later, But yeah, obviously you hear out for the weekend and
- 3:59it's not good when it's an illness.
- 4:01And we're saying that on, you know, what, yesterday was
- 4:04Thursday, that he's not going to race on Sunday.
- 4:08So that's never a good sign. But I'm in a journal group chat,
- 4:12I guess, with a bunch of journalists in the NASCAR space.
- 4:16And I think around 2:30 or so, we kind of got a message that
- 4:21was like, I, I heard something that's not good.
- 4:23I don't know the accuracy of it, so I won't put it in here.
- 4:26And I'm, yeah, I'm kind of sitting here thinking like, wow,
- 4:31that doesn't sound great. I wonder what that could be.
- 4:35And you, you know, you you watch Kyle Busch along his career.
- 4:38And I don't think anyone's invincible.
- 4:39But if anyone was, it'd be that guy.
- 4:43And then another message kind of trickled in about an hour later
- 4:46along the same lines. And then I started to kind of
- 4:49get worried. And as quickly as you know, some
- 4:52of the unfortunately, you know that rumor was out there
- 4:56probably 3 fifty 4:00-ish and NASCAR put it up at 4:41, so.
- 5:03Was he a good? Was he a fan favorite?
- 5:05Yeah, I think so. I think he was.
- 5:08I think he commanded attention more than any driver that I've
- 5:12ever covered ever seen in my life.
- 5:15Why? Kyle had a way of no matter what
- 5:21he was doing, whether you hated it or whether you loved what he
- 5:24was saying and what he was sticking up for, that eyeballs
- 5:27went to Kyle Busch. And beyond that, he backed up on
- 5:30the race track better than any driver I've ever seen.
- 5:32That's running his mouth as much as Kyle was back in the day.
- 5:36Along with that he's been he was under the spotlight since before
- 5:40he was 18. Since that they NASCAR had to
- 5:43put in the first of multiple Kyle Busch rules.
- 5:46They had to make so that he couldn't race a truck when he
- 5:49was 16 years old. And once he eventually got
- 5:52there, you know, straight away, I think one of his first in what
- 5:56is now the O'Reilly series. But what one of his first wins,
- 6:00he they got a guitar that was like hand painted by Sam Bass, a
- 6:05really well known artist in the Motorsports landscape.
- 6:10In this guitar he got for winning the race at Nashville.
- 6:12He smashed it all over the ground in Victory Lane.
- 6:15And so from day one, there's people, you know, that hated
- 6:18that. There's people that loved it.
- 6:19You know, it was, you know, like the epitome of Kyle's career was
- 6:24he's going to do something, you're going to hate it, you're
- 6:26going to love it. But.
- 6:26Kind of a lightning ride type of type of driver, huh?
- 6:29Absolutely. Yeah, and but but could back it
- 6:31up and had a ton of ability. You won a lot of races.
- 6:34So I know nothing about it. I don't follow the sport.
- 6:37So that's why I'm deferring to you.
- 6:38His, I mean, here I probably wouldn't have brought it up.
- 6:40Yeah, no, you're good. So Richard Petty had two hundred
- 6:43wins in his career across the three series.
- 6:46Kyle Busch finished with 234. Wow.
- 6:49It won't. I don't think that record will
- 6:51ever be changed. And would he have got there?
- 6:54Well, he got he got to 2:34. I don't know what number he was
- 6:59ever focusing on for the end of his career, but he did have a
- 7:03quote after his last one. And he said he was asked what
- 7:07makes you know a random Truck Series when, as it feels at
- 7:11Dover on a Saturday? What makes it, you know, so
- 7:14special? And he said, because you never
- 7:16know when the last one's going to be.
- 7:18Yeah, I get it, I get it. Well, good stuff, Not good stuff
- 7:21on his part, but obviously a lot of people I shook up about the
- 7:26answer. Thank you for that, Connor.
- 7:28I appreciate you coming on. All right, Bama, Bob coming on
- 7:30here momentarily. We will get to Bama lined up.
- 7:32In fact, we are as we speak. Just a couple of notes from
- 7:35yesterday that the Cavs, they, they had their opportunity,
- 7:39right? This is, this is goes back for a
- 7:41couple of days and game #1 how you blow that lead.
- 7:44How are you going to be able to pick yourself up and, and
- 7:47perform in Game 2 knowing that you let game, you choked away.
- 7:51That's what they did. They choked away game #1 sure,
- 7:54fatigue playing a factor, but God sakes you're up 22 for
- 7:56crying out loud with with 7 minutes or so left in the in the
- 8:02basketball game. The hockey has been
- 8:03unbelievable. The two teams that most thought,
- 8:06myself included, were just going to.
- 8:08It's inevitable. Let's just get through this
- 8:11round. Let's get Colorado and Carolina
- 8:12for all the marbles because these are the two best teams
- 8:15playing ball. Hold everything because Vegas is
- 8:17now up one game to nothing. And Montreal, this young hockey
- 8:21team, as young as the team as there is in the in the NHL, they
- 8:25are so quick and they are so skilled and I don't think that
- 8:29they realize the stage that they're on.
- 8:30Montreal is giving Carolina all they want.
- 8:32I know Carolina had a long layoff, but man, the Canadians
- 8:36looked unbelievable last night. I'm not so sure.
- 8:40Well, I think one of the favourites will ultimately
- 8:42prevail, I think. I don't know which one.
- 8:45I really don't. Kel Mccarr's not going to play
- 8:47again tonight for Caroline. Let's get Bama Bob in here, as
- 8:50we mentioned, see if we can play his music if he got his music.
- 8:53Connor, it's not a show with Alda Bama's music.
- 8:56Give me 20 seconds. I can't find Sweet home Alabama.
- 8:59Don't play it. I don't know.
- 9:00Keep on hold for 20 seconds. Hey Bama, how are you?
- 9:03I'm doing great, boy. Out of sight, out of mind, huh?
- 9:06Yeah, you know what it is, right?
- 9:07So they forget about you very quickly around here.
- 9:10Well, I don't Bam. And I'm appreciative of what
- 9:13you've done. So just for our audience out
- 9:16there, my final week is I think the 13th of June through the
- 9:2219th of June. Then I got a couple of days the
- 9:24following week and Trent happens to be off that entire week
- 9:27beforehand. So what I'm going to do in in in
- 9:30addition to our, you know, our normal Monday to my normal
- 9:33trend, I'm normal Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 9:35Friday. I'm going to reach back and even
- 9:38if it hasn't happened to be the season, I'm going to reach out
- 9:41to guests that I've had on over the years just to thank them.
- 9:44And of course, one of those guys is joining me right now.
- 9:46And this does not, this is not preclude you by the way, Bama,
- 9:50of joining me on that final week because as you do 1:00 on
- 9:54Fridays, you know how I feel about the segment.
- 9:56I think it's my favorite segment throughout the entire year about
- 9:59Fridays to preview and Mondays to recap.
- 10:02I love college football. I didn't grow up with college
- 10:05football. And when I really kind of grasp
- 10:07college football, it was very apparent to me, Oh my God, what
- 10:10was I missing? And just how good it is.
- 10:13And I've enjoyed our conversations for 25 years.
- 10:16And as I'm going to do with, you know, a lot of my guests, I'm
- 10:19going to do some of the bigger stories, right?
- 10:21The time that we've been on the air, you know, I'm going to I'll
- 10:25throw this one out to you right now.
- 10:26Not that I want you to answer today, just, you know, one or
- 10:28two of the more impactful college, like a Tebow, for
- 10:32instance, right? If we put that out there, top
- 10:34five impactful college football players during our discussion
- 10:38period on the air, Johnny Manziel, right?
- 10:43Yeah, those of them, I'm guessing we're going to see a
- 10:44lot of SC because then there's another SEC quarterback that
- 10:48pops up into my Gene Chesit coached.
- 10:50But we'll save that for for another day.
- 10:53So I guess the big story Bama that's that's been in the news
- 10:59over the last, I don't know, a couple of weeks is the playoff
- 11:02expansion. We're at 12 now.
- 11:05It seems like the Big 10 joined by the ACC and the Big 12 are
- 11:10all fine with expanding the playoffs to 24.
- 11:14I'm of the camp that I don't think it's going to minimize the
- 11:19regular season in any way because I think it's going to
- 11:21make those for seeding purposes, a game in November between, you
- 11:26know, two teams that look as though they're ticketed for an 8
- 11:29and four type of finish. They're going to be playing
- 11:33first for seeding. And so I don't think it's going
- 11:35to diminish. But what are your thoughts and
- 11:38is 24 the right number in your mind?
- 11:41No, I listen and I'm old school. I'm kind of wondering if you
- 11:45want to equate it. I'm a small Hall kind of guy
- 11:47like that. When we get like talk about Hall
- 11:49of Fame or you know, or whatever and you know, Mike Schmidt,
- 11:53Johnny Bennett shows those are Hall of farmers to me, you know,
- 11:56CC Sebastian, maybe not, but I like listen, I am OK with 12
- 12:02right now. What I think what I would like
- 12:05to see happen with 12 is you play the, you know, the
- 12:11semifinals in the, in the, in the championship game are are in
- 12:14bowl games. Everything else is on campus,
- 12:16right? And we saw that last year.
- 12:18So, you know, one of the top 8 seeds, while I'm having to go, I
- 12:23can't remember who it was, had to wind up and go play, you
- 12:27know, basically a rogue game in a bowl.
- 12:29Whereas if if, if they had been if they if we had them playing a
- 12:32home game, you know, they it would have been a better
- 12:35situation. But this is where it was always
- 12:37going to go. I thought it would cap at 16,
- 12:40the 24. I mean, it's kind of like the
- 12:43NCAA basketball tournament. Do we really need 76?
- 12:46Are we really going to fight now over 7677 and 78?
- 12:51Well, Trent, you know, can that, Yeah.
- 12:54I mean, can can the 16th team win a no?
- 12:58Can they win for the, let's say, the the 24th team?
- 13:02Can they win a national championship?
- 13:04I don't think so. I think it's not.
- 13:06It's obviously all about money and.
- 13:09It is all about money and it's it's going to listen.
- 13:13The SEC Championship game used to mean something.
- 13:17Are they going away, by the way, do you think?
- 13:19They have to they either, they either have to go away because
- 13:23how could you how if you go to 24?
- 13:25I haven't even done the math. I mean, is that five playoff
- 13:28games that you're going to have to win?
- 13:32You know, it will be at least four.
- 13:34Everybody's had to play at least 4 right now.
- 13:37You know, the the top, the buys, you know, you don't have to win
- 13:39three. Everybody's going to have to win
- 13:42four. Somebody else is going to have
- 13:43to play 5. How in the hell are you going to
- 13:45keep? Are you going to have a 12 game
- 13:46regular season? No, that's an 18 game season and
- 13:50it's it's too much. I think it's over saturation and
- 13:53I understand gambling and ratings and all this kind of
- 13:56stuff. I think it is over saturation.
- 13:58Again, this is just me. I'm 61.
- 14:00I'm the get off of my yard guy, you know, but I think 12 is
- 14:04fine. Okay, I could I could accept
- 14:071624. To me, we're going to be talking
- 14:10about 8 and four versus, you know, a big 10.
- 14:14You know, I don't, you know, pick Missouri over oh man, I
- 14:19always start to say Indiana, but that's they've changed that
- 14:22narrative a little bit old miss Yeah, over Illinois or something
- 14:28like, I mean, come on. I mean, really, who cares
- 14:31outside of those fan bases? So I I think it's just over
- 14:34saturation. I think it's going to diminish
- 14:37the conference championship games, which to me always been a
- 14:40big deal. I love I mean the Alabama,
- 14:44Georgia, the Georgia Tex. I mean, it means something and
- 14:47it those teams now you just why, why would you really if you're
- 14:51going to have to play, if you go to 16 and it sounds like this is
- 14:55like a big hang up now it's either going to be 12 or 24.
- 14:59The SEC does not want to go to 24 and everybody else doesn't
- 15:03want 16. So that's going to be an
- 15:04interesting dynamic to see who wins this because the Big 10 all
- 15:08of a sudden the last few years is kind of taking over as the
- 15:11big dog, you know, in terms of national championships.
- 15:14But I don't like it. But that's just me.
- 15:17I'm OK with 16 and let's just let's make it an even 4.
- 15:20But it doesn't that that doesn't really reward, you know, by
- 15:24weeks and regular season and that kind of thing.
- 15:26But I think it is going to kill the conference championship
- 15:28games. And I think that's a shame.
- 15:30And I just think I think we're going to get into arguments over
- 15:33teams that really have absolutely no shot at winning a
- 15:37national championship, getting into a playoff.
- 15:39And let's face it, Ken, what do we used to do?
- 15:42We argued over 4 versus 5 versus 6, and then we argued over 8
- 15:47versus 9 versus 10. And now we're arguing over 12
- 15:50versus 13 versus we're going to argue over 24 versus 25 versus
- 15:5426. And it's just, it's, it's just,
- 15:57it's too much for me. You know, it's fair.
- 16:00That's a fairpoint. You're certainly not alone in
- 16:02that. The the thing that I like about
- 16:05it is, is the fact that I mean, fingers crossed, right?
- 16:09It's going to happen for Alabama and your friends.
- 16:12You're going to get a game at home, a playoff game at home.
- 16:14I would love to see one at Kennick.
- 16:16I would love to see one at Jack Trucks just you know, the the TV
- 16:21trucks and the lights going on and and a playoff.
- 16:24Game right here. Cold weather outdoors, right?
- 16:28Absolutely. I'm I'm yeah, I agree with that.
- 16:30Totally agree, Fairpoint. Yeah, but that's selfish that
- 16:33that's selfish on my part. Since we're on the bull topic,
- 16:36Bama, there was an announcement that was made that that I'm glad
- 16:40I clicked on it because I'm when I saw Poinsettia Bowl, I
- 16:43thought, what am I stopping here for?
- 16:46But but then when I did and what I saw what the PAC 12 is going
- 16:50to do when it comes to the Poinsetti Bowl.
- 16:54And, you know, but you and I are both in our 60s.
- 16:57We both kind of love, you know, nostalgia and the Wayback
- 17:00Machine. And as I say many times, you
- 17:02know, seemingly once a week now, I, I, I can't believe that the
- 17:05newspaper doesn't show up at my door every day.
- 17:09So I love those type of things. But when I saw what the
- 17:12Poinsetti Bowl is going to do and what they're going to do,
- 17:15they're going to invite the PAC 12 champion, their new PAC 12
- 17:19champion, which is a lot of Mountain West teams, obviously
- 17:23in the Oregon State and the Washington State and the Boise
- 17:26State and etcetera, etcetera. And the team from the former PAC
- 17:3012 will then play each other. So an old PAC 12 school, either
- 17:35one now that's in the Big 10 or the Big 12 or the ACC in some
- 17:41cases, to play an existing PAC 12 game.
- 17:44I like that idea. Bama, what about you?
- 17:47No. I love it.
- 17:49I absolutely love it. I just you know, when is is the
- 17:54playoffs now going to take away those teams?
- 17:58You know that they. Some of the bulls will go away,
- 18:00yeah. Some of them, yeah.
- 18:01Yeah, so. But you're right.
- 18:03And, you know, OK, fine. So we get to, you know, we get
- 18:05to 16 or 24, whatever it is. We've listen, bowl games are
- 18:08already been diminished. We've seen that, right?
- 18:11And they're going to be diminished even further once you
- 18:14dilute the field even more. I like the idea.
- 18:17I hope they can pull it off. I hope the the two teams that
- 18:22they invite will want to play, assuming they're not part of the
- 18:25playoff field. Listen, you got to do something
- 18:29to try to make your game relevant, right?
- 18:31And if you can get a a a regional matchup like that, and
- 18:35that's that's what I like. I mean, you know, if you're
- 18:37going to have, you know, I don't know, Boise State and you know,
- 18:42Arizona, you know, play each other, OK.
- 18:45I mean, that's that's a ball game that would interest me as a
- 18:47fan, you know, outside of the gambling and all other kind.
- 18:50Of and the point set a bull is San Diego, right?
- 18:52It is right. So it's a it's a great
- 18:54destination. I mean, why wouldn't you?
- 18:56Why wouldn't you want to go to a ball game really, Diego?
- 18:58I mean, I can think of no reason why you wouldn't want to,
- 19:02especially in you know, December, January, whenever it's
- 19:04going to be. So I I do like the idea.
- 19:06I hope they can pull it off. I hope the teams that you know,
- 19:12that that are eligible, that they invite, of course, you
- 19:15know, will go if they're outside of the playoffs and you know, we
- 19:18don't get into this year. You see a lot of teams now just
- 19:20declining bowl goods because they've got to start recruiting
- 19:22their rosters again. And that really is that to me is
- 19:25a big thing because of the transfer portal.
- 19:26Whole other topic. That's one of our topics.
- 19:29Biggest story? But let's do.
- 19:31It and get to June but yeah, I just I just think that I'd like
- 19:35the idea you've got to do something you have to do or try
- 19:38something to make these bowl games relevant to the to the
- 19:43casual fan right to the end to the the eyeballs for the TV
- 19:47partners ratings all we all know where it really boils down to.
- 19:50So I hope I like the idea. I like the concept I hope it
- 19:54works because I mean you got to do something because the more
- 19:58playoff games you'd get which I hope includes more games on
- 20:01campus. Oh, has to, has to, right?
- 20:05Absolutely has to. These these other, these non
- 20:09playoff bowl games are just they're going to struggle.
- 20:11They're going to struggle for eyeballs for relevance.
- 20:14They'll always have the gambling aspect.
- 20:15You always have that. So, but I don't, I don't know
- 20:18how that's going to equate to revenue for the for the TV
- 20:22partners and all that type of thing.
- 20:24We only have a couple of minutes left.
- 20:25Bama, who's the hottest seat in college football coaching wise?
- 20:31I go back to the end of last year and I thought I saw a
- 20:33report that Mike Locksley was fired and I think I said it on
- 20:36our Monday show and you and you both corrected me.
- 20:39So his his seat has to be hot. Is there another one?
- 20:43Am I am I missing? Am I mean Miranda, Bob Baylor
- 20:46maybe? Who's got the hottest seat in
- 20:48college football? I mean, Mike Norville, OK, you
- 20:53know, I mean, he had a good bounce back.
- 20:56Yeah, well, good start, I guess, till last year, you know, from
- 21:00the 2 and 10. But, you know, I just think
- 21:05there's just not a lot of momentum there, in my opinion,
- 21:08at Florida State now they got a big one again out of the chute.
- 21:12They open in Tuscaloosa this year, which is a return game.
- 21:18And you've seen a lot of these games like I think they had a
- 21:20home in home with Georgia fall off because of the new 9 game
- 21:24SEC schedule, which I hate by the way.
- 21:26I I mean, Florida State and Georgia, come on, you know,
- 21:29regional rivals, I mean. So we're losing that one.
- 21:33That's too bad. We're losing that one, Yeah.
- 21:34And, and so I think Norvell is, you know, Trent's favorite Luke
- 21:39Fickle at Wisconsin. That's a good.
- 21:41One be on a hot seat. But I mean, do they care?
- 21:45That's that to me is the big question at Wisconsin.
- 21:48Do they care? Because he has done absolutely
- 21:51nothing since he's been there. It's been a, you know, they
- 21:54just, they have flipped from what the identity of that team
- 21:57used to. Be they used to be they used to
- 21:58be a factor every year, Bammy, you always had to.
- 22:01Every year, Every year, right and and and you know, and the
- 22:05style of play, you know, with Alvarez and and Bilma, you know,
- 22:08they just beat you up and these big 360 LB line that's just gone
- 22:13now and and I don't so but. Running back to would run
- 22:17through. You yes, and just think about,
- 22:19you know, Ron Dane and and I mean I'm losing a lot of them in
- 22:22in the mix, but I mean just go back and look, you know,
- 22:25Jonathan Taylor, I mean like, you know, or you know, whoever I
- 22:27mean whoever, it's just that he he has Monty.
- 22:32Ball. Oh yeah, he has to be on the hot
- 22:35seat, but I just wonder if they really care so.
- 22:38That's that's the answer. That's the answer.
- 22:41Yeah, I think it's got to be fickle.
- 22:43But again, do they care? Do they care enough in Madison
- 22:46to to really pull the trigger and can they eat a buyout up
- 22:49there? I don't know.
- 22:50I don't know what the situation is up there.
- 22:52Mm hmm. Hey, Runway, real quick one.
- 22:55I don't spend a lot of time in North Dakota State, but they
- 22:58they play, they play the Hawks, they play the the Cyclones over
- 23:01the years they played K State, et cetera.
- 23:03They're moving from FC as you know, they're moving from the
- 23:06FCS to the FBS. They're going to the Mountain
- 23:08West. There's a lot of people that
- 23:10think they're going to struggle. I'm not one of them.
- 23:13I mean, there's a lot of big, strong farm boys in North
- 23:15Dakota, right? These guys are always, they're
- 23:18always underrated or they're overlooked when they play those
- 23:22schools. I know it's the Mountain West
- 23:23end of North Dakota State, but I think they're going to fit right
- 23:26in. What am I?
- 23:26Where am I wrong? No, I don't think so.
- 23:29I mean just you have to look at the track record, right?
- 23:32I mean and it's sustained success.
- 23:34I know it's against FCS competition, but I mean they if
- 23:39memory serves, they've knocked off a couple of big boys point
- 23:42where they don't get scheduled by the big boys anymore.
- 23:44I mean they don't know part of them, right.
- 23:47So, and again, you know, and when you go to Division One now
- 23:51it's going to come back to nil. I don't know what their, I don't
- 23:54know what their budget is up there, but I, I got to think
- 23:56they're. What else?
- 23:57Where else you going to spend your?
- 23:58Money, not a lot of competition in North Dakota for for for nil
- 24:03dollars, so they might have to upgrade the the roster a little
- 24:06bit, recruit a little more. I have no idea what their, you
- 24:08know, recruiting, you know, path is, but it Carson Wentz went
- 24:11there. Is that right?
- 24:12Yes, I remember right. So I mean, you know, they've had
- 24:15some guys up there. Who's the other?
- 24:18One Trey Lance, he missed the year of COVID.
- 24:20Trey Lance, yeah, Remember, he didn't play the COVID year and
- 24:22it obviously. Killed.
- 24:23That's right. Killed his opportunity to play
- 24:25in the NFL. That's right.
- 24:27I, I think you're right. So yeah, I, I think they will.
- 24:30I'm not saying they're going to win the league.
- 24:31I think they'll be successful right out of the gate and I
- 24:34think they're going to wreak a little bit of havoc in that
- 24:37conference. That's a good fit for them.
- 24:39I agree. I think I agree man.
- 24:40Where else he can spend your money go to go to Grand Forks
- 24:43for the for the weekend. Right.
- 24:46Exactly. Take a drive to Winnipeg.
- 24:48Well, I've driven the other way many times.
- 24:51Winnipeg, the G Forks and Intifargo.
- 24:53I'm going to the States for the weekend.
- 24:55Look at me. Good stuff.
- 24:57Bama, June 19th, 1:00 Lock it in.
- 25:00The calendar pal. Good stuff.
- 25:02We'll go down memory lane for the last time and I can't, well,
- 25:07I can wait, but it'll be fun. It'll be kind of, you know, kind
- 25:10of emotional at the same time because we've, we've done a lot.
- 25:13Of. Good stuff pal.
- 25:15Enjoy the weekend. Thanks Bama Bob for jumping on.
- 25:17Appreciate it. Always can.
- 25:19Take care bud. Good.
- 25:20To talk to you, Bama Bob, as we talked a little college football
- 25:23in the offseason with my good friend Bama Bob.
- 25:27All right, we'll take a time out.
- 25:28Head to Vegas. I catch you up with Mike Palm,
- 25:31VP of operations at Circus Sports.
- 25:34We did have a winner in the building in this nationwide
- 25:37keyword contest earlier in the week.
- 25:39The boys in the afternoon came off the bench, gave the keyword,
- 25:43one of their audience members typed it into their website and
- 25:48$1000 is coming their way. So here's another opportunity to
- 25:51do so. Head to your station's website,
- 25:55whichever one you're listening to.
- 25:56If you are not unsure, just go to kxno.com, pop up box will
- 26:01appear and in that pop up box type the keyword win, win.
- 26:06Your chance to win $1000 in this nationwide contest.
- 26:11Mike Palm scheduled to join me next Vegas conversation.
- 26:15When I come back, Miller and Condon talking sports with you
- 26:19on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 26:35Hi, welcome back, Miller and Condon.
- 26:37Just past 12:30 on a Friday. Hour number two, Tom Caker.
- 26:41Eugene Repay. We'll do our chicken coop
- 26:43contest as well. Let's head to Vegas.
- 26:45VP of Operations. He's Mike Palm, and he joins me.
- 26:48Hello, Mike Palm, how are you? Good morning, Kenny.
- 26:51How are you? I'm.
- 26:52OK. I saw you've already got an
- 26:53entry in one of the contests and I think it's the second straight
- 26:56year that the first entry in either million Survivor and
- 26:59Grandissimo is $100,000. Buy into Grandissimo.
- 27:03You're on the board, Mike Palm. Yeah, we're on the board.
- 27:07I think we're, I think we did the grandissimo with Ian Richie
- 27:10again by the 1st entry. And then I think Jeff said we're
- 27:15about 30 other entries so far between the two.
- 27:18So between the two other contests, also a good start.
- 27:21Yeah, let's talk about the guarantees.
- 27:23Obviously the Survivor, that's the one most people play, goes
- 27:25from 15 to 20 million. You approach that number last
- 27:29year as far as because you put every dollar back in, there's no
- 27:32rake. You guys, if you take in $1000,
- 27:35none of that $1000 goes to Circa.
- 27:37It goes right into the contest. Do you anticipate you'll get
- 27:40past that number? But this year, obviously you
- 27:42must because that's where you've taken set the bar for the
- 27:45guarantee. Yeah, I think we'll get past 20
- 27:50million. We went you know, if you look at
- 27:52the history of it, we went from a million to you know to four to
- 27:566 to 8 to 10 to 14 to 18, seven last year.
- 28:01So I would suspect that we'll get in 21 or 22 million for the
- 28:07survivor that the to me the, the biggest question mark is grand
- 28:11DC mode. Does it take off?
- 28:13Where does it go from the 6.9 million that we had last year?
- 28:17We guaranteed 4 just to make it even. 3026 for the 1,000,004 for
- 28:22grandissimo. But I would be surprised if it
- 28:24doesn't double Kenny. Well, that was kind of the
- 28:27talker last year, right, is how many people are really going to
- 28:29enter this. That's a lot of money, blah,
- 28:31blah, blah. And I think the overrun, you
- 28:33were around 30, Mike, if if memory serves, that was the
- 28:36number you and obviously, I think everybody's expectations
- 28:40were blown away. You had 69 kind of without even
- 28:43trying, right? Yeah, well, I mean, it was the
- 28:47first year. So how much brand awareness was
- 28:51there? I, yeah, when we got to 11 by
- 28:58August 1st, I felt good because then people knew there it would
- 29:01be a pool and they wouldn't have to worry about, yeah, I'm going
- 29:04to put in 100,000 and there, you know, there's, I can only win
- 29:071,000,000, 1/2 or 2 million. So I think at that point I felt
- 29:11good. It was just getting that little
- 29:13bit of momentum as we saw a few trickle in in June and July and
- 29:17then in late July it started to pick up.
- 29:18So I think now people know it was 6.9 last year.
- 29:22There's No Fear that it's going to be be tiny.
- 29:25And usually if something successful, it grows the most
- 29:27between year one or two or year 2 and 3.
- 29:30I know that with the with the Westgate being taken over by
- 29:34Caesar's, that can't hurt your contest, correct?
- 29:37Because we don't know what Caesar's wants to do.
- 29:40And and yes, the Westgate would dip their tone a little bit to
- 29:42to they wouldn't come close to, you know, cutting into your
- 29:45business, at least I don't think, but to what business it
- 29:48did. It's got to come your way I
- 29:50would assume, right? Well, yeah, right.
- 29:52I think it's a, it's a tailwind for us.
- 29:54And, and just we've known Caesar's hasn't been apartment
- 29:57to run contests. And so in other words, they had
- 30:01some Survivor from last year, right?
- 30:03And they and they had their traditional super contest that
- 30:07you know, so it may be some folks will migrate over or some
- 30:12that did both will just consolidate their entries into
- 30:15Circa. Yeah, makes sense.
- 30:17So, so when you guys are in the boardroom throughout the year,
- 30:20when the the survivors been awarded, you passed out the
- 30:22checks, you've had the awards banquet and you start looking
- 30:25ahead to this year. Obviously we're waiting for the
- 30:27schedule to become finalized, become official before you could
- 30:30ultimately decide what we you were going to do.
- 30:33Could you take us into maybe some of the more not spirited
- 30:36discussions, but maybe some of the more back and forth and
- 30:39ultimately were there major tweaks that were talked about
- 30:42that didn't get implemented? Take us kind of behind that,
- 30:46behind those scenes, if you would.
- 30:49Well, I do want to mention that the Max number of entries in the
- 30:521,000,000 is now 10, so it matches survivors.
- 30:55So folks that wanted to do more than 5 entries in the millions
- 30:58can do that. What was debated was the
- 31:02guarantee amount that there was an argument for no guarantees.
- 31:07There was an argument to go to 35 and do 21/8 and 621,000,000
- 31:17per and then Derek just thought the 20 and 30 was was a better
- 31:20number, it would be more marketable.
- 31:24The other real debate was about the Friday game for the contest
- 31:27for the holiday week. Whether that.
- 31:29Black. Steelers game on Black Friday,
- 31:32would we put it with 12A or 12B? Because you still had four
- 31:35games, one Wednesday and three Thursday, and that weekend is
- 31:38very tough. There's only two teams that are
- 31:40favored by 5 or more, although that's not a great gaming right
- 31:43now. It's lined at 1 1/2, right?
- 31:45Because Denver's on the road. I, I, Jeff Benson and I were
- 31:50started and they can't leave it with 12 B and let the four games
- 31:53stand. So you'll have 4 Thanksgiving
- 31:55and four on Christmas. But Derek wanted to include it
- 31:58with the with the Wednesday and Thursday game.
- 32:00Yeah. And he made the point that when
- 32:02you get to Week 12 B, which is the Sunday slash Monday slate of
- 32:06Thanksgiving weekend, it's really difficult.
- 32:10I mean, if you're going to play in Survivor, not only do you
- 32:13need to, like in the past, look ahead to Thanksgiving slash
- 32:16Christmas. Now I think you got to look
- 32:18ahead to 12 B because there's no quote lay up in there, I don't
- 32:22think, Mike. I don't think there's any layup
- 32:26either. There's like 3 weeks where
- 32:29there's only one or two. Big favorite things change too,
- 32:32Kenny. Sure.
- 32:32Injuries schedule, we said all, all the games on Thanksgiving
- 32:36are going to be pick or one or two and end up Baltimore with a
- 32:40nine point favorite and they lost, right.
- 32:42So sometimes you play the game the way it's supposed to and it
- 32:45doesn't work out. Yeah, that's that was fat,
- 32:48didn't everybody? Wasn't there a whole bunch of
- 32:50carnage last Thanksgiving weekend in surviving?
- 32:53We went from, we went from 900 to 49 in Survivor and we went
- 32:57from, from, I think I don't know whether you had 13 or something
- 33:04in, in the great DD moment being over.
- 33:09It was over because everybody got eliminated with it.
- 33:12They had Philadelphia and they had Baltimore.
- 33:15Let's obviously sign ups are going on now and you have to go
- 33:19in person, get a proxy. We'll go over those details
- 33:21threat and I will repeatedly in the weeks weeks ahead.
- 33:25Want to talk NHL with you, Mike. I I'm shocked by the both of the
- 33:28results, especially the way Carolina came out and how good
- 33:32Montreal just they just out skated them, outplayed them.
- 33:35I'm thinking that, you know, a minute into the game, Jarvis
- 33:37lights the lamp. Here we go, Carolina.
- 33:39But Montreal had other plans. And then Vegas, I don't know if
- 33:43it's just not having killed Mccar and they won't again
- 33:45tonight. Vegas might get Mark Stone,
- 33:47their captain back tonight. Mike, I thought it was just
- 33:50let's get past this round. Let's get to Carolina and
- 33:53Colorado and let's give us what we think we're going to get.
- 33:56I'm not sure sure either of those teams are going to
- 33:58advance. How about you?
- 34:01Were you? I wasn't so sure before anything
- 34:03happened. And I mean.
- 34:05Look. Let's start with the overall
- 34:08principle of the two big favorites.
- 34:11Are you sure that Freddie Anderson is the guy that's going
- 34:15to lead Carolina to a Stanley Cup championship?
- 34:19I was with him for his first three or four years in Anaheim,
- 34:22the last two in Anaheim. Terrible around so terrible.
- 34:25And he hasn't been good in Carolina.
- 34:27So, and then Scott Wedgwood been a career #2 goalie, is he the
- 34:32guy that's going to lead a seat? So that's, that's Tuesday.
- 34:35I said earlier today, I said Freddie Anderson is who I
- 34:38thought Freddie Anderson was. Now then you talk about a car,
- 34:43you cannot underestimate how damaging Mccarby now it is.
- 34:47Take Quinn Hughes off the wild and the cars better than Hughes.
- 34:50Think about that. He's the best defenseman in the
- 34:52world. I mean, I say if he's not
- 34:55injured every year, he should win the Norris Trophy.
- 34:57They miss that. They miss that offense from the
- 35:01blue line and they're not as fast without him.
- 35:04And Vegas is not weak down the middle like Minnesota was.
- 35:07Vegas is very strong down the middle with their centers and
- 35:10it's a professional team, the Stanley Cup winning team.
- 35:14It's a team that trusted each other with the Stanley Cup
- 35:16winning coach. It's going to be a hard grind
- 35:18for Colorado to get through this series.
- 35:20So do you in your mind, is Vegas the favorites to win the Cup
- 35:24this year? If my car does not return for
- 35:27this series, I make Vegas a 6040 chance of winning it.
- 35:31If let's say my cards back for game three and he's healthy and
- 35:34beyond. I think it's I think it's a
- 35:36slight advantage to Colorado. Look, I thought Montreal's best
- 35:39shot to win was last night, 2 weeks off.
- 35:42No one's ever had two weeks off before in the modern era of
- 35:44hockey. I bet Montreal plus 138 first
- 35:47period last night, right? And then of course, they score a
- 35:49goal 40 seconds in as what am I doing?
- 35:52It was interesting, I thought listening to Rob Brenda Moore's
- 35:55comments, you know, he said I didn't pull Anderson because
- 35:59three of the four goals were on the breakaway.
- 36:00If I could have sat every defenseman I had, I would have.
- 36:02All right, so that's a legitimate point.
- 36:05He also said we weren't prepared for the speed Of Montreal.
- 36:07I don't think Montreal that fast for the team.
- 36:09What they are is quick with the fuck out of their own zone,
- 36:12quick passing, right. I thought Montreal had very
- 36:15quick to other than the second period where Carolina hand the
- 36:18men and Dobush had to be good. I thought Montreal was very good
- 36:21at the breakout. And when have you ever seen a
- 36:23team down to go into the third period only get one shot on goal
- 36:26in the period? That's unheard of.
- 36:28Caroline had one shot the third period.
- 36:30That's an excellent point really is in get through, get through
- 36:33Game 2 and off to Montreal and it is a different animal up
- 36:36there, no doubt about it. What Brett Howden ask if is, is
- 36:41Howden healthy? I was just asked to ask you
- 36:43this, is Brett Howden healthy do you know?
- 36:45As far as far as I haven't heard anything, Kenny, I haven't heard
- 36:49anything. So I can't give you any info on.
- 36:51It right and stone will he play tonight?
- 36:52He's skating. Do you know?
- 36:53Does that mean he's going to play?
- 36:55I mean, Mccar skated today and he's out.
- 36:58I know, I believe we will see Stone tonight.
- 37:01I'm 7525 on that. Got you to the NBA.
- 37:05The Spurs team fascinates no end and they're not going away.
- 37:09Whether they win it this year or not, this team is built for
- 37:12they're about to go on, I think anyways, one of those runs with
- 37:15a 2221 and a 20 year old leading the way.
- 37:19Where are you on the Spurs, Mike?
- 37:21OKC, Obviously the series tied up at 1 apiece.
- 37:25Well, it's been as high a level of basketball as I remember in
- 37:30quite some time. Kenny, watching those first two
- 37:32games. I mean when I have my four TV's
- 37:35and I'm watching 2 baseball games, Stanley Cup in the NBA,
- 37:39it's rare that my attention is on the NBA game.
- 37:42But for those games one and two, my eyes were on that game.
- 37:48I think Fox and Harper are really troublesome for them.
- 37:53I really, I think if those two guys were healthy, I think
- 37:55there's a better team. That being said, Oklahoma City
- 37:58is really good. They have all these
- 37:59interchangeable parts. I think Oklahoma advantage
- 38:03Oklahoma City, unless they get both box, I think Fox is going
- 38:06to try to go tonight out of the Harper.
- 38:09You know, to me, watching Harper play, how did Rutgers never make
- 38:13a turn? It's unbelievable.
- 38:14If they did 2 lottery picks, those guys must not have got
- 38:17along. Those two, those two guys that
- 38:20Ace Bailey and Harp, they must not have.
- 38:22Yeah. I mean, we watched them play
- 38:23plenty in the Big 10. How did they not make it to the
- 38:26NCAA tournament? Anyhow, I think both of these
- 38:29two teams are here for a long time to come.
- 38:31This might be this is like in the decade, like from 80 to
- 38:35what? It's a 87.
- 38:37It was Lakers, Celtics 5 out of seven years in the finals that
- 38:40we might see a run in the next 7 years where it's these two teams
- 38:43in the Western Conference finals.
- 38:46And by the way, game one was the highest rated conference finals
- 38:49game in NBA history. I know there's more people now
- 38:52and all that, but that should dispel the method the small
- 38:55market teams can't be. No, you kind of remind me of
- 38:58about to remind me of Cowboys, Niners in the NFC Championship
- 39:02game year after year after year, I think.
- 39:04That's well, you know, that whole NFC when when Johnson got
- 39:07the Cowboys good, it was this, but it was the whole same
- 39:10bracket. It was Cowboys, Eagles, Packers,
- 39:1349ers. There was no variation of that.
- 39:15It was just that Cowboys 40. It was so same 14 but the Final
- 39:19Four was the same every year. The Knicks are going to come out
- 39:22of the East. Do they have a chance whoever
- 39:24comes out of the West? 0.
- 39:26Yeah, I feel the same way. It's fun to watch.
- 39:29I'm glad Madison Square Garden's going to have a big event, but.
- 39:33Yeah. I can't see it.
- 39:35Hey, last thing since you know, we've the schedule's been out
- 39:38for a week and you said that when you joined us last week.
- 39:41Now that some of the players have the schedule that we know
- 39:43who they're playing, but now we know where they're playing in
- 39:45the buys, etcetera. Is there an NFL team that's seen
- 39:47some some major futures movement this week at your place?
- 39:51A. Little bit of Lion, I think
- 39:55people didn't realize that, you know, the Vikings won their last
- 39:59four games, which got them to three seed in that division and
- 40:02the Lions are playing the last play schedule.
- 40:04I think people that really came in when you're study the
- 40:07schedule and say, my God, the Lions are going to win 14 games,
- 40:10right, or something like that. The schedule is that last play
- 40:12schedule. So that's been the one team I've
- 40:15seen some some movement on. What's Memorial Day weekend like
- 40:18in Las Vegas? You guys be busy.
- 40:21Pools open, We've been, we've been open, but now all the rest
- 40:23of the pools open. So it's a big weekend because
- 40:25it's the traditional start of the summer season.
- 40:27Here, yeah, Fremont Street got some bands all, I'm guessing,
- 40:30most of the weekend. Yeah, yeah, they do.
- 40:32They have tonight and tomorrow night some bands.
- 40:34So it'll be it'll be good all the way through Monday.
- 40:36Absolutely. Will be Mike Baum.
- 40:37Thanks mine. Appreciate you coming on.
- 40:39We'll talk next week if your schedule allows.
- 40:41Thank you, Mike. Thanks.
- 40:43Kenny Yep, have a good weekend. Mike Palm, VP of operations at
- 40:47Circa Sports Course. If you haven't heard, you want
- 40:49to win a trip to Circa, do Circa the Keg.

- 40:55this is the second major prize in the in the promotion.
- 41:00Or somebody won a hot tub from WCI earlier.
- 41:03Now somebody's going to win airfare three nights, stadium
- 41:07swim accommodations, food and beverage credits hang out with
- 41:12us. We're going to have multiple,
- 41:14multiple opportunities for the private seating in the sports
- 41:19book, the world's biggest sports book.
- 41:20And if you want to enter, you go to kxno.com.
- 41:23The silver ticket promotion. The second major prize in this
- 41:27is Circa with KXNOI know the boys in the afternoon off the
- 41:31bench are going. Trent is going.
- 41:33I'm not sure if his new Co host, I'm not sure who's new Co host
- 41:36is, by the way. I kind of have an idea, but
- 41:40nothing's official. I'm not sure he'll be there or
- 41:43not. I'm going to get out there.
- 41:45They're going to go on Sunday, do their shows Monday and
- 41:48Tuesday. Our contest winners will go
- 41:50Sunday as well and it's just not one winner.
- 41:53The runner UPS will get the the whole stadium swim to stick with
- 41:57us, to hang out with us in the booths at Circa.
- 42:01You'll be staying. I think there's three or four
- 42:03people will be staying at the D them and a guest, which is their
- 42:07sister property just down Fremont Street.
- 42:10And if you've never stayed downtown, if you stayed in
- 42:13Vegas, you, you think that the hotels are right next to each
- 42:16other and you just keep walking and walking and walking and it's
- 42:19100° outside and it's 110. Whatever it is.
- 42:24He's Oh my God, I'm never going to get there.
- 42:26Well, literally on Fremont Street A, it's a two, it's two
- 42:30lanes and they're right next to each other.
- 42:33There's, there's no optical illusion, all of the property.
- 42:36It's just such a blast. There's three main stages on
- 42:39Fremont Street, so there could be a band at one end, a band in
- 42:42the middle and a band at the very end.
- 42:44And this, they bring in some major talents during the summer
- 42:48months. I never thought I'd want to stay
- 42:51at Fremont Street, never did. I was a strip snob.
- 42:54And then I kind of left the Strip, but I when I found Palm's
- 42:57place, a sister property to the Palms, I was off the strip and
- 43:01it's like condos. And it's really nice.
- 43:03Really nice. But this is just.
- 43:06This is spectacular. Take your time out, come back
- 43:09and finish up the hour. Miller in Condon on the Iowa
- 43:11Sports Radio Network. Yeah.
- 43:15So, I mean, Rudy Gobert isn't athletic enough.
- 43:18And beads never helped. Hi Mary Condon, welcome back.
- 43:42Final minute and 1/2 or so over the first hour of the program.
- 43:45Hour number two, start things off with Tom Cacert.
- 43:48hawkeyereport.com A lot of ground to cover with Tom.
- 43:52Look forward to catching up with him on Hawkeye related topics.
- 43:55One of which Jack Campbell got paid by the Detroit Lions men
- 43:58when he was drafted. Of the Lions fans, what a waste
- 44:01of a pick. You never take a linebacker like
- 44:05this with the 18th pick overall. He's been handsomely rewarded
- 44:08with contract #2 good for him. He was All Pro last year.
- 44:11I mean, he's a hell of a player. I don't have to tell you that.
- 44:14He's a terrific player. And this Lions team is.
- 44:16Mike reminded us the 4th place schedule.
- 44:19That's why I jumped the board when the Vikings did leapfrog
- 44:22them, knowing that the Detroit's schedule was going to be so cake
- 44:26or, you know, to the NFL, right, but certainly would have at
- 44:30least a little bit of an advantage scheduling wise.
- 44:34I think the Lions are going to be a major factor this year,
- 44:36Jared Goff or no Jared Goff. And he's going to be there, one
- 44:39would assume. But this is a good football
- 44:41team. This was a team that was on the
- 44:42precipice a couple of years ago, seemingly.
- 44:44The injuries have always hurt that team.
- 44:47They're due for a relatively healthy year.
- 44:49The schedule is in their favor. We shall see.
- 44:52The division's going to do them no favors because I I still
- 44:55think it's competitive wise top to bottom.
- 44:58There's no free square in the division, right?
- 45:01There's no Raiders, there's no Browns, There is no fill in the
- 45:05blanks. Although the Saints were better
- 45:07last year. I was going to use the Saints.
- 45:08They had a good year last year, but there's no bottom there, no
- 45:12Cardinals, Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings.
- 45:17All of those teams are going to be, I think good.
- 45:19I hope that. I hope they are.
- 45:20They certainly move the needle is that that division rather
- 45:23more than any other where we're situated here in the wonderful
- 45:27state of Iowa. Hour 2 is coming up next.
- 45:30Tom Keckert leads it off Eugene Repay on Iowa State chicken coop
- 45:34contest as well, Miller and Condon.
- 45:37Hour 2 is next Iowa Sports Radio Network.
