- 0:35SPEAKER_01: This is Ekta, and I have a phenomenal guest for you guys today.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Her line is one of my favorites.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: It is truly an up-and-coming line.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: And I really, if I could, I would give it to all of you because it's it's so wonderful.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founder of The Feelest Skin Care, Shay Marie.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Shay.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited that you're here and I'm so excited to talk about your line.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: You've really created something extraordinary.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: That means so much to me.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: I'm so excited to be talking with you as well.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, I, you know, I've been really looking forward to um speaking with you because, you know, as we were just chatting right before the interview, um, you know, your line, see, I really believe in the, you know, we talk about skincare, we talk about self-care, right?
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: And this like intertwined connection between the two.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: And I feel like you've just hit that sweet spot with this line because, you know, from the packaging to the feel of the products to the way they actually work for you on your skin and your body, it all resonates.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And it's, you know, I was telling Shay for everyone listening, her bath, like she has a bath product.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's it's uh like little rocks that are for what are they, bath salts, Shay?
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Or what what exactly are they?
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, bath salts.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I I used them, I had a really hard day, and I and I was using like I just had one of those days, you know what I mean?
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Every part of my body was hurting and aching.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And I remember I put a little bit into my bath, and I'm telling you, as someone who suffered from clinical anxiety my entire life, I have never had a product do that for me before.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, that's my rant, but I want to get started and I want Shay, I want you to tell us all about Yeah, no, I I I really love it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: And I want you to start us off and tell us really your whole journey and what got you um into skin health and what really started all of this.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so just like a quick background on me.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: I've been um working in like the fashion and beauty space for the past 10 years, mainly in like social media.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: I was really at the forefront kind of of blogging and then Instagram, and I, you know, amassed this major following of women um kind of in the luxury fashion and beauty space.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: And I've always really, really loved skincare, but I have very sensitive skin.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Um, so I probably about five years ago, really, I was using a lot of uh, I guess at the you know, clean, more natural products, but they were never like really, they were not the beautiful products that you were seeing like in my Instagram feed.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: So like the products I was actually using where I was getting from like health food stores and hiding them in the back of my medicine cabinet, and then I was just shooting pictures of all these, you know, brands that had really, really a beautiful aesthetic.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: And I felt like there was kind of um a place missing in the market of like plant-powered, clean, natural skincare and body care that works, but that also looks luxurious and that could be on your top shelf and sit next to your Chanel.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: So uh so that was kind of what we set out to create.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: And um, the thing that's the most important thing to me is that I would never ever like build and create and sell something that I didn't believe in a million percent.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: And I do everything for the brand from I I've been everything from like, you know, the male woman to the creator of the formula and everything in between that I really feel like to be like a personality or any kind of celebrity for your brand to be really successful in the long run, you can't just be the face of it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Like that's never what I wanted to do.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: I wanted to do it all and learn it all and like build something that I would use every day.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think you've you've definitely done it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: You've definitely done that because you know, your first of all, your fashion background definitely reflects in the packaging.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: It is absolutely stunning.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: I am one of those people that I love a very clean design.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: I love, for example, one of my favorite cities in the world is Copenhagen.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: I love Copenhagen designers.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I love um, you know, the the whole feel of the design and fashion industry in that part of the world and and the whole clean look and the beautiful, it's just it's simple, simple colors, clean, you know what it is, and you're right, you can put it up next to the you know highest of luxury products you have.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think I've shot about 18 different videos of just your uh body creams alone.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Just because I love looking at the packaging.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: And I like I'm I'm such an aesthetic person and I'm also a minimalist, and I wanted it to just be like beautiful and you could leave it in your house anywhere.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Like I have our body creams like on all my coffee tables in little like marble baskets around the house.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: And you know, people are always, if they don't know it, they're picking it up and they're like, What is this?
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: It's so beautiful.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but that's so important to me as well.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: And then, as well, you know, we did you take very much into consideration trying to be eco-conscious as well, in terms of like using aluminum tubes instead of plastic, where we could uh using glass bottles instead of plastic, all of our secondary packaging, so our boxes, um, it's not only recyclable, but they're also compostable.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: And then we don't like send out any extra gimmicks because like I haven't been in the beauty industry for so long where I get these mailers that are like five feet tall and they have TV screens in them that you throw away for one lipstick.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: And it makes me feel so terrible.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Like even putting that box in the trash, I was like, my brand is never gonna be this.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: There's not gonna be any extra fluff.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be the product, it works, it's beautiful, and there's no extra, you know, tons of extra trash and waste.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: So we try to be as conscious as we can.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, you I think you've really done a great job of that.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: And I completely, completely echo and agree with what you've said there is those huge mailers.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm not gonna lie to you, Shay, honestly.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I've tried to like reuse them somehow.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, this just looks like a really bad Barbie doll house.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Like this just I can't agree into this, you know.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Like, and it's so I get you.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: I get it, there's a lot of that.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And you know, we talk about um sustainability in this industry, but it's like, you know, we have to.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I think I was on on another interview um last week, and I was talking about how sustainability really is in the details, and it's in the details of you know, how the founder approaches their line.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: And I really love the point that you made earlier, which is, you know, you have really put all of yourself into this line.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And that is something that, you know, for everyone listening out there, if you're like an inspiring or aspiring, sorry, um, entrepreneur, you want to make your own line, like please keep that in mind, what she said, because you're gonna have to do that.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Because it's not about creating a line, it's about connecting with your consumer on a very speci, like on a special level, you know, that that is it's almost like you you get to know the founder through the way you feel when you open their their package and then you open the the products and you try them.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: You're see what I'm trying to say?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Like it's very sounds very like hippie-ish, but it's true, you know.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Like I could tell before we even started, we had a conversation that you really put a lot into these products and and if it resonates because they feel great, like I said, they look great.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: And also, I want to just point out that although you're using aluminum tubes, one thing I really love is that your tubes don't do that weird, like you know how they get like some of them get really misshapen and like super denty and like just they look terrible.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Like I hate that look, they don't do that.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I really like that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we're always trying to dent them up to you know make them look cool for photos.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: But um, no, along your point, like something that I've always believed, and I think is becoming more and more true every day, is that consumers today are so intelligent and they are doing their research and they want to know who's behind the brands they're supporting and what those brands are doing, like to do their part, whether you know, being eco-friendly and vegan and clean and non-toxic, and even like conceptualizing this brand years ago when we first started thinking about it, that was so important to us.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: We are like, we want to make this brand for the modern consumer and the consumer of the future.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Um, some they like consumers want transparency now, they really want to know.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you don't a lot of people just don't go out and buy stuff now without doing some research, like who's behind this?
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Where is my money going?
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think like gimmicks that brands used to like big skincare brands in the past used to be able to get away with, consumers aren't buying it anymore.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: You know, they're not fooled.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I completely agree.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: And I think also consumerism has almost uh, you know, taken a turn um in this almost like I want to say like mental health, more spiritual direction, if you ask me, because I think with this uh, you know, saturation of the markets and and with this, you know, huge breakout of skincare and just new brands every day, people are not just looking for another cream, you know, people are looking for products that they can pick when they pick them up, they have a whole full sensorial experience with those products.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: And that includes things like feeling better, that you're using something that you trust, feeling like whatever you're putting on your skin or whatever you're doing for your self-care routine is going not only, you know, the to the length of like being good for your skin, but it's going the extra mile of doing something positive for your day overall.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of depth now, right?
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: When you look at consumerism.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: And I think that's where like, you know, I really try to shine that light and I on my podcast when I when I speak to founders such as yourself, because you know, for example, just the name of it, you know, um, you know, I'm a huge advocate for like uh mental health, like positivity and just whatever little things can you can do, you know what I mean?
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Like just to make you feel good.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And the name is literally the feelest, you know.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: And I'm I when I first uh when I first came across the brand, I I'm not gonna lie, I really, really like the name.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: So I want you to tell us like how did you come up with the name?
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, thank you so much.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: So when you know, when we were first talking about the brand, I mean, I think so many times in our internal conversations, we were like, we want this to make people feel good.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: And so feel was a word that came up a lot.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Um, and so I I had I wanted to do a play on feel, and so it kind of came off the idea of a realist, for example, would you know see the world as it really is, very, very real.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: And then a feelist would kind of view the world by how they feel.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: Um that's where this is Oh my god, I love that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: So we kind of made up the word, but um, and we were just like our team was like, This, that's it.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what we're trying to do.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So no, I love that.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, sorry, totally like freaked out on you for a minute, but no, I really I really love that, and I think that's that's uh, you know, like I love names like that.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: You know, I was talking to another brand, and um, I don't I don't really think they're your competitor because they make adopt products, they're totally different, but like care skincare.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: And I remember when I was speaking to them, I was like, I love that your name is literally care, period.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: You know, so it's like the name goes a long way.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, we can all sit here and pretend like it doesn't, but it does, you know.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: So I want to talk to you about how um all of this was for you.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: You know, you come from a fashion background.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: I know that um must have been an interesting uh transition into entrepreneurship.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: So I I actually I have another brand.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: It's a it's a luxury swimwear brand.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: It's called Same that I've had for uh almost seven years now.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: So I um yeah, so I did kind of know a lot about building a brand and kind of a lot of the mistakes I did make there.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: So that was really helpful when I started the feelless.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: But obviously, the skincare industry is so different.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Um, and I've learned so much and and how much time it takes to really create a product from scratch.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: All of our products we've like literally created from scratch, it takes at least two years from start to finish when you're creating a skincare product, and especially when you're a new brand and you're small and like you're trying to find all the right people to work with, it takes even longer.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: So, really, from when we first started putting it together till we launched our first product was about three years, and just the pace patience that's required, you know, to do something for three years before you even see it live anywhere, was um, I had no idea really, kind of, you know, and there's just so much that goes into it in terms of uh all the testing and the regulations.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: And as you know, some of our products contain CBD, which is an ingredient that I've loved and and I've believed in for a really long time.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but the hurdles there just because of the regulations around it have been unbelievable.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: So, and then you know, we had planned, we started working on this in 2018, and our plan was to launch in the beginning of 2020, and that was like right when the pandemic hit, kind of at the worst, and all of our factories were just like, oh yeah, we're shut down and we have no idea when we're gonna reopen.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: And we had put so much time and yeah, and money, and we had raised money for this project, and then we hadn't factored into the budget a whole nother year of not being able to launch and still having to, you know, pay our employees that we hired.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: And so it was really, really scary.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: And there were, I mean, there were so many mental breakdowns, I think, in that period of like, do we just give up?
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Do we just call it quits?
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: When are we ever gonna be able to launch?
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: And we had, you know, different pieces of our packaging coming from all over the world, and just no answers, and everyone was just like, we honestly don't know.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: So there were many days where I thought, like, oh man, I I put two years into this and it's not gonna, it's never gonna come to life.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Um, we finally were able to launch in in August of 2020.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: So it's been just like a little over a year now, but um, it's been a it's been a crazy road.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I think the best things, you know, uh you always end up having to wait for them, and they're always things that, you know, there's so many hurdles along the way.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, it the I I can tell you honestly, as a consumer, I I think the the wait was definitely worth it.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: You've created something very, very magical.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I say that, I don't say that lightly.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: You know, for me, like I come from like I I think maybe I don't know if you know or not, but like I was born in India, I was raised in um rural India.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Um, my grandmothers and um my family are from rural North India.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: So a lot of the stuff that I was exposed to as a child, and like you know how we have memories of scent and like um different things from when we were very, very young, and we were like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I remember that.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: So I have a lot of those um from just growing up in this area that was very rich in agricultural land, very rich in like, you know, the herbs that my grandmothers would use.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: And I want to say this is that, you know, for example, like your hand cream or your body cream rather, um, it's called necessity, by the way, for everyone listening.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Um, when I first put it on my hands and I smelled it, I'm not joking.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Like it was almost as if like it's it was nostalgia because it took me back um being very young.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: And I don't know what it is in it, like which ingredient exactly, but the scent of it was so subtle, but so like just it was it's it's like a uh plant scent, right?
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: It's a very organic scent, but it's like it took me back to a place of feeling, you know, like wow, okay, this really reminds me of something I've I cherish.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And that, like, you know, it yeah, you're gonna have some consumers that feel like that, you know.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I'm just telling you my story, you know, uh with the brand, but like it, it really that meant a lot to me.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: So, like, you know, um, I wanna like I want you to talk a little bit about these ingredients because I know you have some amazing ones.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: You mentioned the CBD, and I would love to um really learn more about that as well because you said there's a lot of hurdles around CBD and getting it into products.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: So maybe we can start there and you can tell us a little bit about that.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, definitely.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: So I have been using um CBD for a long time, uh at first as uh an ingestible kind of to help with anxiety.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: I've always had anxiety, and so I really believed in its power, and then more and more research was coming out about it in skincare.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: But really, the only stuff that you could find was kind of from a weird store.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: It was like brother buds, and it was like a like a gunk that you put on.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: But like I was like, this stuff is like working, and I mean, I heard many personal close stories of people with you know, much uh more serious ailments, like serious arthritis, who it was really helping.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: And um, I was like, I want to, you know, use this in something and make it really, really beautiful.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: And so that's where we kind of got the idea to make products with CBD, and um, but we never wanted to be just a C BD brand because the whole idea of the feelist is using like incredible botanicals, um, and CBD just being one of them.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: So now we're, you know, well, like part four of our products have CBD.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: We have three others that don't.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: We have like four more products coming out in the next year that don't have C BD, but that have other really innovative plant-based ingredients.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: So there's so much about the brand now that has been become like researching botanicals.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and to go to your point about the fragrance, we we do, we don't use any um, we we use all like essential oils and so all natural fragrance.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: There's no fake fragrance in there at all.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Um and we work with this amazing uh fragrance house that that specializes in natural essential oil blends.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: And to we created, you know, these formulas that really make you feel something and to take you to that place of like calm, relax, like yeah, yeah, you know, just pleasant, just pleasant, like it was genuinely like meditative.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Like, like if I could like put a scent to like you know, those apps like Calm App or like Headspace, like I really I feel like I've been saying this forever.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Like, I know that people know this because anyone listening to this podcast, I've been saying this forever.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Honestly, Shay, like one of those apps needs to like partner up with a line like yours because honestly, like this is like the perfect scent to like have on your body and just to like have lingering when you're like meditating, like it's so coming, it's so coming.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: And my favorite thing to do, I mean, people are using our body cream for like everything, like I said, after working out, arthritis, cramps, but like for me, I put it on the back of my neck before bed, and it's like it just makes me sleep so well.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: There's something about it that like you know will releases tension.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, CBD is an anti-inflammatory for sure, um, which is why it's also incredible in skincare.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: And you know, we I would also love to talk about our face oil, which really has been like our hero product and put us um on the map as like a skincare brand to watch.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: And we've kind of really shifted a little more into facial and facial skincare products since then, just because we it just the response to our face oil has been unbelievable.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's sold out in the first year five times and we couldn't even make enough of it.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: And the reviews that people are leaving, we've had people send us videos crying that it's just completely changed their skin.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Um so it like, I mean, it's the greatest joy of my career by far to like create have created products that are actually changing people's lives and making them feel better or more confident.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's really really, really special.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: And now, now it's become kind of like my my life passion right now, I guess.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I can definitely see that.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: And that's such a beautiful thing.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I love that you've had such an amazing response, very well deserved, by the way.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: And I, and yeah, I was gonna actually get to your serum and face oil because they are absolutely wonderful.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, the serum is just so luxurious.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I remember um what you know, every time I try a new line, I really try to make it like very clean palette, you know what I mean?
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Like I'm really trying to cut the line.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And I I remember like one night, I just like, you know, I was like, I'm gonna have to, I need to try her products and I need to really put them on her face and try them.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: And I had all I did that night was just wash my face, put on your serum, and then put on the oil on top.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And my skin in the morning was plumped, it was dewy, it was glowing, it was like everything you want from like a nighttime skincare routine with just two products.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: That's crazy good.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, I I can honestly attest to what you said about your oil being really, really amazing, but.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: So is the serum, you know what I mean?
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: So it's like they go so perfectly together.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: And you know, I know a lot of people wonder, um, a lot of listeners out there, they wonder like, what's the best way to layer your products?
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, I think I have a very strong appreciation for brands such as yours because you've created this um facial routine, which I can honestly say is a beautiful nighttime routine for everyone listening.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you just put on the serum, you know, unless you're super, super dehydrated and you need an extra moisturizer, that's fine.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: But if you just put on the serum and the oil on top, it really will be enough for a nighttime routine.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: It's it's really that good.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: So um I want to uh talk about that.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: How was that the hardest thing to formulate for you?
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Or what what was the process for that?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: The facial uh products.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so the the oil we I really we wanted to be able to create an oil.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: We call it the the face oil for people who can't use face oils, because I think that there has been this kind of stigma around face oils that it's not for people with problematic skin or acne-prone skin or sensitive skin.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: I obviously knew how the what how incredible the benefits of CBD are in skincare.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Um so we really kind of researched from there to find oils that work really great with sensitive skin that don't clog your pores, and to build like a beautiful blend that's gonna soak into your skin naturally, but not clog your, you know, clog your skin at all.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: And so um, I mean, we probably spent a year like reformulating it.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: And it's it's not a crazy formula, you know, it's all natural oils, um, but it's just finding the right blend of oils that you know mimics the pH balance of your skin and isn't going to, you know, it's all about like keeping your skin balanced.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, and I think with oils, I think with oils, I just want to like intervene a little bit and just to uh educate the audience a little bit was is that people often don't understand why oils are so good for your skin.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: I just want to mention that um oils are made up of lipids and a lot of these are fatty acids, you know, the derivative of these oils.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So those are acids, so they're gonna keep your skin at the pH it's supposed to be at because the lipophilic structures are acidic in nature.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: So an oil for your skin is actually one of the best things you can put on your skin because it's going to keep your skin in that normal, you know, more acidic environment that it's supposed to be in.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to add that in for everyone listening.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: But yes, please continue.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: No, a hundred percent.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: And I mean, not all oils are created equally, right?
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: Like there are certain oils I would never put on my face.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't put coconut oil on my face.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Um, doesn't work well with the pH of your skin.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but this blend was like formulated to, you know, balance your skin perfectly.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: And then the CBD really helps with any inflammation.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: So it helps with redness, you know, irritation, acne, dermatitis.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, men are using it for aftershave for razor burn.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: It really has so many, you know, incredible benefit incredible benefits.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: And so people really became obsessed with this this product.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: And I think in deciding, you know, what product to create after that, which eventually became the serum, I wanted something that was going to work, you know, really well together with the oil.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: And people ask me, they're like, why doesn't the serum have CBD?
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: So there's no reason that you need to layer multiple layers of C BD on your face.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: That's just like a gimmick.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: You do not need a C BD face wash because C BD is redundant.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, so I mean, when people ask me that question, I'm like, our oil has C BD in it.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: The serum didn't need to also have C B D.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Um, but something that I learned along the way that I found very interesting.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: So I lived between Miami and New York, but most of the time we were working on the theolist, I was in Miami, and I literally was only using the oil on my skin.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: I would wash my face, use the oil, and that's all I was using, and my skin was perfect.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: And then I was in New York for about a month straight during the winter last year, I want to say in January, and I was just doing my same routine, and my skin started acting up, and I was like, what's going on?
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: And so I spoke with like a lot of different uh dermatologists and some, you know, of the dermatologists and researchers we had been working with, and they were like, you know, your skin really needs hydration from two places.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: It needs water-based hydration and it needs oil-based hydration.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: So maybe while you're in Miami where it's very humid and your skin already has like a lot of next, there's like a lot of humidity in the air, that the balance that your skin needs there maybe is just the oil.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: But right now you're in New York in the dead of winter, it's dry, your heater is drying out your skin, and you're missing that step of water-based hydration.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Um, so then I was like, okay, I want to create a serum that's super hydrating.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, it has, you know, like hyaluronic acid and ceramides and all those things.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: And then it also has incredible plant-based ingredients that everything from like calming, it's it has an ingredient in it called lutein that comes from the marigold plant, and um it helps protect against blue light rays.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: So, like the light rays from your computer, from your phone screen.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and it's lightweight, but it's super, super hydrating.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: And it it, you know, I use so in the morning, I just use I wash my face and I use the serum.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: And then at night, I wash my face, I use the serum, and I use the oil.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: And that's my routine.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: I don't use any, I mean, barely any other products on my skin ever.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: We just actually two days ago launched our newest product, which is uh an exfoliating facial polish, but it's it's very hydrating, so it doesn't strip your skin at all.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: We wanted to exfoliating a couple times a week is important to get those dead skin cells off, to like keep your skin clean and fresh.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but I felt like a lot of exfoliators out there really stripped your skin dry, and then you're trying to, you know, build back up your natural balance.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Um, and so this exfoliator that we just launched, it's called juice shot.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: It's incredible.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: You literally could use it by yourself and it moisturizes your skin enough where you could just use it and then just leave and not put anything else on if you didn't want to.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Um, but it has a lot of amazing plant-based ingredients in it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: It has like, we call it juice shot because it's literally like a wellness boost for your skin.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: It has papaya and pineapple enzymes, and it has turmeric, uh, black pepper, and ginger oils, which all have incredible antibacterial properties.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: So it also helps with you know keeping your skin clear and blemish-free.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: And all of our products, we the the number one thing that we really are looking at when we're starting to create a product is keeping all skin types in mind.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: So sensitive skin.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: I've always had extremely sensitive skin.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Everything makes my skin red.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously there's exceptions to everything, but for the majority of people out there with sensitive skin, like our products aren't gonna irritate your skin, they're all calming.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's kind of you know, and they're for everybody, they're for men, they're for women, all tones, all types.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I really love that you mentioned um what was it?
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Uh black salts or black pepper.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: What did you mention?
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Black pepper, yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, black pepper.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was there's I think I was reading a study or something about um the anti-uh enzyolytic effects of I don't know if it was black salt or black pepper, but it was one of those.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And I yeah, there's definitely a lot of um, there's a lot of potential there.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And I really like that you've explored such unique ingredients because, you know, um, I think in the world of skin health and especially like plant-based products, uh, people love to go to, you know, big just names like Ayurveda, and they'll put that on their packaging and they'll be like, oh, we're inspired by Ayurveda.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, that tells me nothing, you know, that tells me that you're inspired by an ancient collection of literature that is very vast.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I'm glad that you're going into the actual ingredients because um, you know, a lot of these a lot of these things are um actually very, very uh beneficial and they're they're uh undiscovered gems when it comes to not only skin health, but just overall wellness and homeostasis.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: And so I really uh you know I appreciate brands.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: I know that you also include mango, uh mango seed oil, I believe, in your in your formulation.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Um in which in which one?
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: In our body cream.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: In our cream, in our body cream, yeah.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so mango I know is a very um it's a it's a very, very good like uh source of like obviously there's like vitamin C and stuff that comes from it, but like I there's a lot of studies out there about like the potential for like mango to be like just even better than like for example when you think of vitamin C and fruits, right?
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: You think of like oranges or kiwi, right?
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: But mango has like, I think I was reading it has like this ability to like regenerate cells, like it works on cells to cause like actual, like just better regeneration and stuff.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: So I mean, I you know, you're using ingredients, and the whole point of this spiel is you're using ingredients that are truly um, they're very I you know, I would even say safe, but also very untapped in terms of potential.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: So that's very cool to me.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I love seeing brands do that, you know, and I I know there's a lot of clinicians out there, there's a lot of people that are like, well, where's all the science?
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: I'm like, well, it has it's yet to come, you know, you know, it's it's coming.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: So um I want to actually ask you, and I actually want to mention that um the concentration of C BD in your products is actually uh very, very um, you know, well thought out because your facial oil has 500 milligrams of C BD in it.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: And that's a really good um it's a really good concentration.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: So I would love for you to speak a little bit about that um in terms of the education around it, because I think very little is known about that in terms of how much um, you know, is recommended to be used in products, especially because, you know, we know that like, you know, the skin has endoc it has a whole endocannabinoid system um in place as well.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: There's receptors on the skin for you know uh cannabinoid cannabinoid uh products.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: So um I want to know what you learned when you were formulating um with CBD, like what the best concentrations are and all that, if you can share that with us.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, definitely.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, gosh, we learned so much in trying to you know seek out kind of the people that knew the most and had done the most research on CBD and skincare, and especially at the time, like you know, we were it it you're getting so much mixed information, and um, you know, we really had to kind of talk to as many people in the space that we could as we could.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: And then what we really started realizing that was happening in the CBD space is because the most important thing, you're you want to find an incredible formulator and a manufacturer, and um yeah, a lot of them weren't touching CBD at the time, and so the ones who were were like this one shop, like one-stop shop that they already had all these pre-made formulas and they were just like, oh, here you can buy it, and then just slap your label on it, which is a lot of what which is what a lot of CBD brands are doing, which is why I don't like the the term CBD brand, um, which I why is why I think it has kind of gotten like a bad uh rep lately.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: But um, we were like, no, we want to build it ourselves from scratch, trying to, you know, learn as much as we could.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: And CBD as an ingredient is very expensive.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: So you really have to look at how much C BD is in a product because you could like line up our face oil to another face oil that's the same exact size and the same exact price, and it only has a hundred milligrams of CBD.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: And the reason they're doing that is not because it's more effective, it's because it's five times five times cheaper, right?
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: Um so but people aren't, you know, they're not really educated, so they don't really understand exactly what that means.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: From all of our research, what we found is that 500 milligrams is a really good place for skincare.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Um, so we I I would, I mean, pretty much all the products I use with C BD, I make sure that you know they have 500 milligrams.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: Um, and the only, like I said, the only reason they would have less is to save money.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: So that's that makes sense.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, you don't want to people, and that's really important because people always focus on the inky list, but it's like you really that's why I asked you this, is because like you are being very transparent and saying exactly how many milligrams are in there.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: And really, I wanted to lead down this path because I don't know.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Um, like yeah, I just wanna I always try to incorporate as much science as I can into my interviews.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: And I I wanted to mention to you that I before our interview, I read into a paper that was published in 2020.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and I believe the the authors are Bosswan and Boswan et al.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: And they have this amazing uh diagram in their figure that is really showing you that um the CBD mechanism that is like the mechanism of the uh cannabinoid receptors in our skin goes, it extends from all the way to the very surface where the corneocytes are, all the way down into the dermis.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: So it's going, it's it's like you know, those receptors are found in your keratinocytes, they're found in your sweat glands, they're found in um sebaceous glands, you know, and fibroblasts and melanocytes, uh, they're everywhere.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: So that's why I think this conversation is very important and that you've really created a CBD product that is efficacious, because and that's why this conversation matters, is to really uh get behind brands that are putting that extra money into their formulations, because you want, you don't want just an ingredient to say this has this in it.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: No, you want it to have an ingredient in therapeutic um levels.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: And I can honestly say, like 500 milligrams, like if you really go into the the little literature that's out there, but it is there, you know, it's published literature, that is a good amount.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And it will go and activate these receptors and it will go and, you know what I mean, work on different levels of the skin.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: So I think that that's a very, very key thing to point out.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: It's not just about like, well, yeah, okay, you're right, you put in more money and you've really truly made this like a brand that's based on quality, right?
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: But it's also the science supports you, the science backs up your decision, you know.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: So that's very important to point out.
- 37:07unknown: Yeah.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: And you know, when we started formulating the face oil, I mean, almost four years ago now, there wasn't nearly as much science as there was now.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: So a lot of it was trial and error.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: We were like, okay, let's make this oil at different different concentrations of CBD and let's try it on ourselves and you know, a select group of people and let's see like at what place it really becomes effective.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Um, so there was a lot of like, you know, us doing our own trials and research along the process uh through the whole process.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: Um now they're like, like you're saying, there's a lot more research out there.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Uh another thing that I was gonna say is if for anyone buying any C BD products, you should always look on their website um to see their certificate of analysis to make sure that you know what is it there's what they're saying is in their product is actually in there.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: So on our website, any of our products that contain C BD, if you look under our ingredients section, you can click to see our uh our COAs um that come from accredited labs that test the potency of the CBD.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: Um, because it's really important because you can't always just believe what people are saying because no one is regulating that, no one's checking that.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: No, that is an excellent point.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Excellent point.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: And I completely agree.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: I think that, you know, um, yeah, that like right now we're still in that phase in the skincare industry where we're trying to figure out, like, you know, how do we really regulate things and how do we get um some sort of credentials behind claims, right?
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: But it's like whatever is out there, if there is a certificate that your brand can get and there is someone that can test it to the best of the abilities that science has right now, then yeah, you need to go that extra mile and you need to do it because you owe that to the people that are going to trust you and buy your brand.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: So it's another reason I love your line.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I really, you know, I don't want to keep ranting.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: I feel like I've I've done a lot of ranting in the episode, but I mean I'm so happy.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I it makes me it makes me so happy.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: And I love the opportunity to interview entrepreneurs that are really doing things the right way.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And I I say this, you know, as much as I can on the show.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: I never invite on guests that I don't believe in their products.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: That's why every line I interview, I ask for your products because I need to know what it is.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: And so, like I can honestly tell you this line, everyone listening, it's called again, the feelist.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Every product is extraordinary.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Every product has a purpose.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Every product is on its own something that you can use and say, this is not redundant in my routine.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: This is not something I already have.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: It's something that is going to definitely add value to your routine, whether it's through uh self-care and mental health and like just feeling better and just the sensor helping you, or the actual CBD, like we just talked about, the science of that and you know, that helping your skin.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: So I really believe that, you know, if you're gonna be if you're like me and you love experimenting with new lines, especially indie brands, like you know, this is a really great place to start.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: And I think you guys should really all check it out, you know.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: So um, Shay, I want to thank you so much for this opportunity.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: It's been so lovely chatting with you.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: That thank you so much.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: That really means so much to me.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, we we put in so much hard work on this and we really want it to be accessible to everyone.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: We've worked so hard to keep all of our prices under$100.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: Um, our serum that came out is just came out is$68, and it's better than$300 serums out there.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: And I know because I've been in there like with our formulator in the factory, seeing what these ingredients actually cost and what brands are marking them up to.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: And I was like, absolutely not.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: Like, I want to bring something beautiful, amazing, luxurious, something that works to people that they can afford.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: And um, I I would never sell anything that I didn't use like every day myself.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: And I have access to everything.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: You know how it is.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, we get sent stuff all the time.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: Like, and so, like, then the you know, the bar is really high there when you can have everything to make something that's even better, that's yours, is really absolutely to hear people loving it is the greatest joy for me.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: I love I love that, and I think you made a really good point is that you know, when you have access to be able to try different things and try everything, you're going to make sure that what you're making is with a very refined eye, you know, and with with a very refined perspective.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: And I think that's exactly what you've done here.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: It's a beautiful, beautiful range.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, truly luxurious.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: It looks beautiful on my vanity, you know.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I just I really love it.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: And I I just want to commend you.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: I think it's it's very difficult to start a business and it's very difficult to stay true to your core values, you know.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: And I just really want to commend you as a fellow woman in business, you know.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: I I really, really enjoy what you've created.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: And like I said, you guys, I'm gonna um link everything in the description for this podcast episode.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: But Shay, where is the line available?
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Is just through the website right now, or is it in any stores um currently?
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're just on our own website.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: We've chosen to stay that way, just D2C.
- 42:09SPEAKER_03: We really want to focus on like building the brand and kind of our fan base before we uh you know go into retail.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: We've had conversations with everybody, but you know, we've done so well on our own right now, and we we kind of don't want to mess up that momentum.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, it's just the feelist.com.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's just uh www.uh feelist.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: So there's no the in front of it.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just sorry, what are you saying?
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: I was saying there's the in front of it.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: So the feelist is awesome.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: I I can access it without the the oh well it probably because we have it set that way, just in case anybody messes up, it redirects you.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Uh so you can get there either way.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, the feelist.com.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: I definitely you guys go check it out.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: And definitely, you know, it any of the products are wonderful, but this this oil is really, really nice.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: You know, everything Shay and I talked about 100% back that up.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: It's a wonderful oil.
