- 0:16Hello, and welcome everybody to episode forty two of Cards and Categories. I
- 0:21am Mike Coolard from bras Ball, joined as always by my very good friend
- 0:25Jeremy Brewer from ras Ball brew. Since we talked last week, we've had
- 0:30a huge development in Major League Baseball and that is three brand new, super
- 0:37awesome mascots have hit the floor. So I got to know which one is
- 0:42your favorite? Between the Rays skateboarding Ray logo, the Arizona Beekeeper, and
- 0:49of course, I mean I'm gonna maybe sway you a little bit in this
- 0:53vote, but my favorite the Minnesota Summer Sausage. So, of these three
- 0:58mascots, which one is by far your favorite? That's tough. I mean,
- 1:06I'm I'm gonna have to go with the beekeeper personally, your beekeeper guy,
- 1:08Okay, I'm a beekeeper guy. You know anybody that you know?
- 1:14Can I, if I rig correctly, can race across town forty minutes away
- 1:19at kids ballgame, make it thirty minutes through Arizona traffic and what should have
- 1:25taken you Phoenix traffic in forty minutes and then saved the day by removing the
- 1:30bees and then throw out the first pitch like I mean the beekeeper, like
- 1:37it's Arizona Diamondbacks is now the Arizona Bees, Like there's no question we the
- 1:42Houston killer Bees have lost all name at this point. So I don't I'm
- 1:47liking the beekeeper. How about so to tell me summer sausage you explained?
- 1:52You tell me why so well? I mean, for one, it's just
- 1:55a bunch of dudes like throwing around and slapping a giant like five pounds summer
- 2:00sausage, and all the quotes from it are the ending windows are amazing in
- 2:05terms of just the amount of times that the Minnesota Twins over the past week
- 2:09have talked about sausages in all their media interviews, and you can see this
- 2:15sausage like in their dugout that so I summer sausage is self or like shelf
- 2:22stable. They've actually The Athletic had some pretty good coverage of this where they
- 2:25actually interviewed like sausage makers to get research on how I can't believe I'm explaining
- 2:35this. This is so amazing that our viewerships just dropped. I think it's
- 2:40up. I think it's up because this baseball is all about this weird stuff,
- 2:45and so the sausage is technically like shelf stable, but you can see
- 2:51this thing looks sweaty and greasy on the inside of the packaging, and I'm
- 2:55sure it's no good at this point that you know it's been compromised in some
- 3:00way. I'm just waiting for it to pop and like see what smells them
- 3:04in eight. But I'm pro summer sausage just because the Twins, if you
- 3:08remember last year, they tried to like force celebrations with the fishing vest and
- 3:15like the fishing rod and stuff. And when you bring it just the sausage
- 3:21involved, and like, let guys be guys. I think you get just
- 3:23much more funny situations. And yeah, I'm here for the sausage, especially
- 3:28considering the rally that it's led to the Twins on over the past week and
- 3:31a half. You know, at least you have say it's natural, it's
- 3:36real. It's not the force celebrations with the big you know hats or the
- 3:42big you know what was it the Reds had like a Vikings helmet or something
- 3:47like that in their dug out celebrations. It's it's not over the top.
- 3:53It's what we have, the fridge available, what I want to know.
- 4:00I guess I haven't looked a well enough. What started this, like,
- 4:03was somebody like, I don't we have nothing to celebrate today. Summer sawage.
- 4:09Yeah, one of the players received it as a gift at some point,
- 4:15So I will look that up. But I was I thought we were
- 4:18gonna say that it's organic, unlike the skateboarding Devil ray, which is very
- 4:26forced. I I like it, but I will say that the execution could
- 4:30have been slightly better because if you look at the logo too, like,
- 4:33it just looks wonky in terms of the skateboard design. That and the fin
- 4:39of the ray is like coming over one of the wheels. That's not how
- 4:42you ride a skateboard. I mean, like I know, so I did
- 4:45look it up. The Summer Sausage or origins here. Kyle Farmer left a
- 4:49summer sauage received on a table in the clubhouse. He received from you know,
- 4:55somebody gift, some gift, fast package. Then the hitting coach you
- 5:00grabbed it brunt of the dugout. I'm assuming it's a snack, and then
- 5:05the rest is history. The rest is innuendo filled history. And so yeah,
- 5:14I'm going with longevity. The bee keeper maybe I'm biased because that one
- 5:17can last more than summer sausage. And if somebody tells me the summer sausage
- 5:23is go longer, I've got to take a lot of questions. Yeah,
- 5:26and TOPS agrees with you here, as the bee keeper guy has gotten his
- 5:30own tops Now card and somehow TOPS signed his rights that he's autographed cards,
- 5:35So I think they're sticker autographs if you're really worried about whether they're sticker on
- 5:41card. But on top of it too, it looks like I don't know
- 5:45if you've realized this with tops Now, but they've been running short print parallels
- 5:48with all the cards that go out. So the short print parallel for this
- 5:55one is just the huddle of the bees. So if you were to order
- 6:00this card and get the short print parallel, you would get the normal Matt
- 6:03Hilton bee Keeper card of him throwing out that first pitch when he's hyping out
- 6:08the crowd, and then also that short print parallel of the bee swarm on
- 6:14the netting. Also, try go for the full rainbow here. You've got
- 6:17a rainbow of blue, purple, red, orange gold to knock out on
- 6:21the Matt Hilton bee Keeper rainbow out there. I'm I'm kind of disappointed that
- 6:28Tops now hasn't done a summer sausage card, but maybe that's too much in
- 6:32the window for Tops. I just don't know the autographs on the summer sausage.
- 6:36I just I don't know how those play for summer sausage relics. There's
- 6:44a lawsuit waiting to happen somebody gets salmonella from a summer sage they pull from
- 6:48a pack two years from now. So those redemptions, let me tell you
- 6:54the redemptions on those things. That was a great segue there. Yes,
- 6:58that's another bit of news that we did get out to Tops this week is
- 7:00that they are changing the redemption process. So if you've been out there ripping
- 7:05cards, and I know this has held people back in the past from ripping
- 7:10older card sets because if you have a redemption, they always had dates on
- 7:14them that usually expired in three ish years. I don't know if it was
- 7:18necessarily always super consistent, and then if it did to go past the expiration
- 7:24date, you just had to hope that when you sent it in to TOPS
- 7:28they would somehow hook you up with some sort of equivalent ish autograph or some
- 7:32sort of goodie package. But they did announce that they will make redemptions go
- 7:40out to ten years now, which I think is going to be really huge,
- 7:44maybe partly for I also wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of this
- 7:48is facetious on Tops's part, that they've got a lot of twenty and twenty
- 7:53one product laying around that they need to get out the door eventually and don't
- 7:58want to have all these data expirations because I do think that there is a
- 8:03lot of unripped wax from the era that we've been in the past couple of
- 8:07years. As production numbers have gone up, the popularity of the overall hobby
- 8:13has gone up, and for some reason people love to sit on the wax,
- 8:16which I mean I never could because I love ripping them. But this
- 8:20is the other reason, Like, if you're sitting on any sort of redemption,
- 8:24you need to get into them quickly. But I guess you've got you
- 8:28know, another seven or eight years if you really want to. At this
- 8:30point, yeah, I think you're right to the point where I think it
- 8:33is more marketing playploy than anything. You know, you have to think that
- 8:37they've with the prevalence of sticker autos that they have a massive stock hold of
- 8:48these sticker autos because redemptions don't seem to be as common as they once were,
- 8:52and so I think it's kind of a risk mitigation technique because they didn't
- 8:54say they're going to actually fill these. They're saying that it's just up to
- 8:58ten years that you could have the it's not going to expire, and so,
- 9:03you know, just because it's a redemption does not guarantee that it's gonna
- 9:09get gonna get filled, even though it should. So I do think that
- 9:13there's a little bit of a play to this that they've got their their redemption
- 9:18strategy under control, so now they can just open it up because there's just
- 9:20not that much left that they have, you know. I think with the
- 9:22announcement, they said that about a year ago they had seventy thousand outstanding redemptions
- 9:28that they owed and now it's ten thousand, so they've cut that significantly,
- 9:31and so I think it's to the point where like, we've got all the
- 9:33backstock ready, so we know we're gonna make it. But I especially with
- 9:39some of those you know, twenty twenty one card, twenty twenty two's you
- 9:45know it's it's kind of a nice kicker that you don't have to be worried
- 9:48about getting stuck with your one auto out of your hobby box not getting getting
- 9:52fulfilled. So all the way out to twenty thirty three now on redemptions,
- 10:00twenty thirty four actually for what we're gonna talk about later day with Bowman,
- 10:05Yeah, exactly, So that is going to be our bigger talk after we
- 10:09get through our news and notes sections. Here is Bowman. Twenty twenty four
- 10:13drops on May seventh, So we're going to give you a little bit of
- 10:16a preview this week so that you're ready to get out there and buy it
- 10:20when it drops next Wednesday on the seventh. I guess depends on when you're
- 10:24listening to this, but we are recording this on May first, and we'll
- 10:30just get into the news right now, because I'm not sure if there's a
- 10:33fun way to segue into the injury news that we have this week. That
- 10:37we've got another very lengthy list of players that are hitting injured lists and messing
- 10:45up our fantasy pools up there out there once again. And the big one
- 10:48right off the bat, Mike Trout goes down with a torn meniscus and is
- 10:54having surgery. They haven't announced a timeline yet because I would imagine miniscus surgeries
- 11:00are a little finicky that you know, when you get in there, you
- 11:03don't exactly know the full stand of the damage until you've opened up the knee,
- 11:07and so it depends on how extensive that surgery needs to be when they're
- 11:11in Mike Trout's knee to determine his timeline for return. So currently I think
- 11:18people are starting to pay it for early to mid August, so you're looking
- 11:24at Trout being down for another good two ish months. And this certainly really
- 11:30hurts because if you had Trout, you had to have been really excited for
- 11:33the production you were getting out of him at the beginning of this year.
- 11:37Yeah, you're You're absolutely right, And you know, I think I've seen
- 11:39that the best case scenario is four to six weeks, which is I think
- 11:43absolutely best case. I'm if I'm gonna take the optimistic route here, which
- 11:50I think I would, is that there wasn't really a very clear instance of
- 11:54when this happened. It was more he had some soreness. They went and
- 11:58took checked it out. So to me that means that the severity is hopefully
- 12:03not as bad because you can just take your biscuits and just just go,
- 12:09and you know that's it is dangerous and so that when that happens, it's
- 12:13it usually is a little bit longer. But to your point, you know,
- 12:16Trout was off to an absolutely fantastic start. Sure he wasn't his average
- 12:22was a little bit lacking, but I mean he'd already surpassed like half of
- 12:26the power total from last year. He's the more small and more basis this
- 12:28year he had the last three years combined. Like he looked like he was
- 12:33a man on a mission. And I mean, if he would have kept
- 12:35up what he was doing so far, like he was back. He's back
- 12:39in the MVP talks, and we talked about in the preseason, right like
- 12:43this was the first time in probably a decade that Trout was like underpriced in
- 12:48drafts and so you could actually get Mike Trout, actually plug him in and
- 12:54hope for the best, knowing the injury is always a risk. And yeah,
- 12:58unfortunately here we are and it's a sad day for fantasy baseball. Was
- 13:03also just a sad day for baseball because Mike Trout was is one of the
- 13:05best things that ever happened to baseball, and it is sad to see him
- 13:09not on the field. So I don't know, you have to cheer four
- 13:13for the Angels now, no Atani, no Trout. Well, it's Joe
- 13:18Brandy, it is Joey Dell's season, like full fledged. I think at
- 13:22this point, who has opened with a three sixteen, three sixty five six
- 13:26fourteen line with that's a one seventy two WRC plus out of Joe Adell,
- 13:31who has also added four homers and five stolen bases. So this really opens
- 13:37up that pathway to jo Adell playing full time. I'm starting to believe in
- 13:43this new version of Jodell. I don't think he's going to keep hitting three
- 13:48sixteen, that the batting average will certainly sink down to the two forti ish
- 13:52range, But I think that he's proven enough over this month to show that
- 13:58he's made that extra developments. You can see it actually just in his contact
- 14:01rates. His contact rates over the past month have been the best he's shown
- 14:05in the majors. So I don't know if it's just better control of the
- 14:09zone or a better I or what is finally, clicked for Joe Adell specifically,
- 14:13but I think that you're looking at an outfielder that's going to be usable
- 14:18in just about every league for the rest of the season. Like I said,
- 14:22the batting average might be a little bit low, but you're looking at
- 14:24somebody who over a full season, could give you something like twenty twenty or
- 14:31twenty five twenty ish sort of lined with equivalent runs. And RBIs hitting at
- 14:35the top of the Angels lineup. Yeah, I'm very torn on Joe Adell,
- 14:39Like I've spent some time looking at him just yesterday, and he's done
- 14:45this before, Like I think he's come out of the gate like this before.
- 14:50The metrics all look similar, and then he just fell off the face
- 14:52of the earth. The one difference being his strikeout rate is significantly better than
- 14:56it was at that time in past season. So that's the one thing I'm
- 15:01watching right now. First of all, you can't watch with Jodell at this
- 15:05point, like you have to go pick him up if he's still available.
- 15:07It's not like I'm just like, well, let's see what happens, like
- 15:09you have to make that move. But I would be watching very closely to
- 15:13see if those strikeouts stay intact. If they do, yeah, we're onto
- 15:18something. If they start to spike back in the mid twenties, maybe even
- 15:20worse than I'm I'm selling high at that point. That is a very one
- 15:26dimensional analysis here. I'm looking at the strikeout right only for Joe Adell.
- 15:30If it's high, I'm all out. If it's low, I'm in.
- 15:31No. I think that's fair because I think that is the indicator of the
- 15:35overall kind of plate discipline for Joe Odell there. So we will certainly keep
- 15:39an eye on him the rest of the summer. We've got a little bit
- 15:43of a similar situation I would say almost in Chicago, as he's just about
- 15:48right after we recorded the pod early last week. Cody Bellinger then subsequently ran
- 15:54into the brick wall at Wrigley Field. He left that game and that night
- 15:58they did an initial X ray but didn't find any damage. Did another X
- 16:03ray the next morning and found a couple fractured ribs. Looks like he should
- 16:07be out four to six weeks. But Cody Bellinger certainly is not a stranger
- 16:15to the il either, as that shoulder and knee have bothered him over the
- 16:19years, and so this just kind of adds to that litany of injuries for
- 16:23Cody Bellinger. I'm also just kind of all these rib and kind of oblique
- 16:30injuries are also just really worrisome in terms of the timeline getting back because you
- 16:34just don't fully know how they're going to react. But what that doesn't do
- 16:38is it opens center field in Chicago for PCA. Pete crow Armstrong is being
- 16:44called up and looks to be getting pretty much full time in centerfield for the
- 16:49Cubs until Bellinger is back. So, brew, what do you think this
- 16:53portends for Bellinger's value the rest of this year? And what do you do
- 16:59in in leagues where PA might be available. Yeah, I think Bellinger's value
- 17:03I think definitely takes a pretty significant hit here, you know, from a
- 17:07a actual power perspective getting back in the in the box. You know,
- 17:11rib injuries do since seem to take some time to think you can come back,
- 17:15but to actually be folded back is a different piece. And Bellinger,
- 17:18I don't know, it feels like you're gonna right walk in a tightrope with
- 17:22Bellinger last year this year just what the production and you just don't want anything
- 17:26to tip the wrong way on that tightrope. So I'm a little worried for
- 17:30Bellinger that said, there's not much you can do. You gotta wait.
- 17:33Help hopefully gets back, hopefully gets off to hearts hot start, and you're
- 17:37able to, you know, look forward. But on the other hand,
- 17:40Pete crow Armstrong, I really do like Pete crow Armstrong for the long haul,
- 17:45not for twenty twenty four. He is a glove first prospect. He's
- 17:48got some good speed, but that bat's gonna take some time to come around.
- 17:53You know, we're talking to guy that it in the miners this year.
- 17:56I think he was walking three percent of the time, which is not
- 18:02like I have to look at the leader words like that. That is very
- 18:06impressive to walk that little. The power is still very very early. He
- 18:14feels like he's still a kid that needs to fill out for this despite being
- 18:19twenty two. I mean he's a he's six Like it's been a long time
- 18:25since I was six one, considering I've never been six to one. But
- 18:30besides that issue, like he it's just gonna take some time. I I
- 18:33I like him long term. You know. He makes me think more of
- 18:37like a Kevin Kiermeier something like that. Really great glove, good speed,
- 18:41He's gonna eventually be ten to fifteen homers. But I think he's good.
- 18:45He's a better real world player then he has a fantasy player, and there's
- 18:51nothing wrong with that. I think that's actually great for the Cubs. I
- 18:52think he's going to be a really good fit for them and a really good
- 18:55player long term for them. I'm just not too excited from a fantasy perspective.
- 18:59So you're the Chicago guy. Tell me I'm wrong, No, Crow,
- 19:03I think there's I don't know if I'm quite as negative as you,
- 19:07but I do think that, like from a fantasy perspective, it's going to
- 19:11be a little tough to roster Pete Crow Armstrong over these next few weeks while
- 19:15Ballenger is out, unless you are desperate for the steals, because I think
- 19:19that is the one component of PCA's game that could be dynamic for fantasy.
- 19:26He is going to be hitting ninth in this Cubs lineup. I think he's
- 19:29going to be like a two forty s hitter. I am a little bit.
- 19:33When I wrote about him this past weekend for my Waiver Wire report on
- 19:37Saturday, I was also worried about that strikeout rate. But I've subsequently found
- 19:41out that, like it's kind of also his first taste of the automated ball
- 19:45strike zone down in Triple A, so I think that might have been driving
- 19:48some of that discomfort. I chalked it up in my column to you see
- 19:52these types of players where I always think about Francisco Lindor being this where they
- 19:56just were so good that they got bored in Triple A and knew that they
- 20:02belonged to the majors. And so you maybe hope that PCA had a little
- 20:07bit of that going on when he was hitting two oh three down Triple A
- 20:08before his call up. But yeah, I'm not looking for the ceiling to
- 20:14be super high here, but I think he's maybe essentially like if you are
- 20:18in a league where Harrison Baiter is usable, PCA is usable. That is
- 20:25the the epitome of a comparison right there. If you're in a league with
- 20:29Harrison Baders is usable. First of all, that's deep league right there.
- 20:33I don't know, pretty solid of late they like, yeah, but like
- 20:37I think he's that type of mold where good glove, good speed, a
- 20:41little bit of pop just can hit a ball. But like, yeah,
- 20:47you're not going to count on a huge amount of production now of that bad
- 20:51I see a Waiver Wire article about PCA playing in corps Field at some point
- 20:56down the line. I should look that up when they when the US are
- 21:00going out there, because he would be fun to watch in Cooers Field,
- 21:03like just play center gios. All right, Well, I alluded to this
- 21:11other injury a little bit with Cody Bellinger, and that is Tristan Cossas also
- 21:14went now with an injury like right after we recorded last week, and this
- 21:18one was very serious that it seems that he like essentially like tore a rib
- 21:25and fractured it, like out of the ribcage. There's like cartilage damage and
- 21:30just it just seems really gross and nasty that Tristan Cossas popped that ribout when
- 21:34he was swinging the bat last week and things really went south at first p
- 21:41S for Boston since then, as they have actually picked up Garrett Cooper from
- 21:45the Cubs, and they just picked up Dominic Smith to day from the Tampa
- 21:51Bay Race. So that is the platoon they're rolling out there with a little
- 21:55bit of Bobby Dolbeck mixed in. It's really gonna test what the Red Sox
- 22:00depth is gonna be over the next couple of weeks as this this four through
- 22:06nine is absurd right now in the Boston lineup on roster resource, the cleanup
- 22:11hitter is will you abray you? With Connor Wong hitting fifth, Dom Smith
- 22:15hitting sixth, Garrett Cooper hitting seventh, Emanuel Valdez at second, which should
- 22:19turn into Von Grissom pretty soon, who's working his way back from flu,
- 22:22should be back a few days yep. Yeah, and then Saddan Rafaela at
- 22:26shortstop in the nine hole, and so yes, what are you doing with
- 22:32Tristan Cassis, you know, for rest of season? And then also are
- 22:37you reconsidering like any of your Boston Red Sox assets, maybe in Duran Devers
- 22:41O'Neill if you have them, because that lineup around them has gone to shreds
- 22:47pretty quickly. Yeah. I so with casas I this this injury is really
- 22:52worrisome just because of the variability on their return. Like with the cartilage injury,
- 22:56you can't, like muscle back, you can't try to rehab extra like
- 23:02you just have to sit around until it heals. And it's your midsection,
- 23:07it's not like it's gonna heal easily, and they you know, I saw
- 23:10an interview with Costas and they said, like, how long did the doctors
- 23:12tell you? And they said, well somewhere from three to six to nine
- 23:15weeks, as long as it takes. Like I'm like, well, that's
- 23:19really clear, either one, two or four three months, and and he
- 23:23said like, well it hurts to breathe. Well, I'm no expert,
- 23:26but that's hard to play baseball if you can't breathe. And so I'm concerned,
- 23:33like, I think this is going to be a nagulant. I think
- 23:36it's going to take him a longer to get back. Then you know,
- 23:38he's he's hopeful, he wants to get back, he wants to play,
- 23:41and so I am not you know, I'm I'm booking this as a three
- 23:45month injury. You know, we're we're talking August when when when he gets
- 23:52back. And so if there's anybody that's wanting to try to buy low or
- 23:56something on him, I'm I'm all for it. But to your point,
- 24:00I mean, I yeah, I'm I'm concerned with with what's going on in
- 24:03Boston. Like he you you got a good top top three there. Duran
- 24:07Devers O'Neill, But talk about streaky hitters. O'Neill and even duran To a
- 24:14bit could be streaky hitters. So like, if I'm a Raffie Devers owner,
- 24:18I'm sitting here going like there is no protection for for him, and
- 24:22there's not like you're not getting gonna have the guys on base. He's not
- 24:25gonna get knocked in like it's gonna he's gonna have an empty batting line.
- 24:29He's gonna have the power and things like that. He's gonna hit for a
- 24:32good average, but he's just not gonna have the counting stats that we're used
- 24:33to from a Raphael Devers. So I think you, like you have to
- 24:37knock him down a few pegs, not because of him, just because the
- 24:41scenario of where he's at, he just he has no protection at this point.
- 24:47Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think if there's one player
- 24:51in that lineup that has an up arrow, though, it's Will, you're
- 24:53a bray you because this injury certainly locks him in for some pretty long term
- 25:00playing time. And I mean he's now over one hundred and seventy two played
- 25:04appearances on his career Slash three sixteen three ninety five hundred. That's an eight
- 25:10ninety ops. So he's been a pretty solid hitter. So I guess that
- 25:14might be like the one kind of upside. And I guess something to keep
- 25:18in mind as you're looking for, honestly, even filling out for the Bellinger
- 25:22and Trout injuries, because William or Bray you should also kind of be usable
- 25:26in twelve teamers as long as he's hitting cleanup. Yes, very true,
- 25:30Like there's I guess there's silver lining everywhere, is in there exactly? Yeah,
- 25:34there's a good and a bad push and pull. Okay, Well,
- 25:37we're gonna go down the coast a little bit in the al East to Baltimore,
- 25:44where this one kind of dropped out of nowhere. Today, Grayson Rodriguez
- 25:48is being placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. So this looks a lot
- 25:53like what happened to Bobby Miller a couple of weeks ago, which is kind
- 25:57of serendipitous considering that they were both so high up in the velocity readings on
- 26:06fastballs and kind of right next to each other that they also are on that
- 26:10list of players with high velocities on those fast balls that are have hit the
- 26:17ils over the past couple of weeks, but we'll see kind of where this
- 26:21shakes out for Grace and Rodriguez. Currently I would expect him out maybe two
- 26:25to four weeks, but shoulders are always worrisome. With the corresponding transaction,
- 26:30the Orioles activated John Means from his rehab stint down in Triple A as he
- 26:38is recovering from Tommy John surgery. No, not Tommy John. That was
- 26:44last year, but he was ramping back up. I think from Tommy John
- 26:48again. Yeah, a forum strain. He's coming from forum strain. I
- 26:52believe that's why I had it with the and the results have been awful.
- 27:00John Means down in Triple A, He's pitched six games, eighteen innings with
- 27:03an eight point six year ARRA, but it's mostly been driven by a two
- 27:07point four home run per nine, which is just brutal. So, uh,
- 27:12Brew, what are you doing in leagues where you might own Grayson Rodriguez
- 27:17and any interest in John Means? Yeah? I first of all, no,
- 27:22yeah, I mean neither. Let's just start there. No no interest
- 27:26in John Means. This one's really tough for me with Grayson because there's there's
- 27:30very little data, very little detail he looks fantastic come into the season,
- 27:34but he's he's not looked that good this season. His his XCRA is about
- 27:41four and a half. His his Baseball Savant page is mostly blue outside velocity.
- 27:45His ground ball rates dropped, Like there's things have it looked so so
- 27:51great for Grayson so far. Again we're talking six games, could be small
- 27:53sample, but it's been kind of mass because he's got four wins in those
- 27:57games and he's out and kind of lucky to agree with guys getting left on
- 28:03base uh velst he's down a little. So there's just a number of warning
- 28:07signs as I look at this and now it's it's landed an injury, Like
- 28:11how bad is this? Is really really my concern. So I don't think
- 28:15there's much you can do besides wait and wait for the information, because it's
- 28:18still if you there's so many pitcher injuries this year, you are absolutely holding
- 28:25like if you haven't lost a number one and two starter, like you got
- 28:26to go play the lottery at this point, because you're you're walking on water.
- 28:32But you know there's a number of folks have lost there one and two
- 28:34starters. But I'm waiting on Grayson to kind of see what comes out of
- 28:38it. But I am a little concerned that he's been hurt for for a
- 28:44while now and they're just like that we now, we got to put some
- 28:47rest on it. And I just I don't like those injuries where you end
- 28:49up on the ail for rest and let it heal itself, because those just
- 28:55seems to drag so long and there's just no information, and like, let's
- 29:00just look at somewhere else in the rotation with Kyle Bradis, who's just making
- 29:03it back, and he was shut down and got some rest and come back,
- 29:10and that was like a two month, you know, ordeal just to
- 29:14kind of make it back, And so I hope it's short, but I'm
- 29:18not kind of my good graces here. Yeah, I agree, And you
- 29:22can see a little bit like in the game blog where it has degraded a
- 29:26little bit for Grayson over the past couple weeks. I do wonder if it
- 29:30just got to a point where he had to finally kind of tap out and
- 29:33say I need a little time off. But it is certainly concerning. I
- 29:37do think that, like if you've got any chance to move on from him
- 29:41in Dynasty, like at eighty ish since on the dollar that maybe I would
- 29:45consider doing it, because I just don't think that this is gonna be like
- 29:52a great trajectory for Grace and Rodriguez as he moves through the next couple of
- 29:56years trying to get stretched out and kind of the way that injuries are shaping
- 30:02up and forming our playerpool for pitching. Yeah, there's a lot of promise
- 30:07here. There's just a there's gotta be some like I don't know where to
- 30:10look right now for correlation with injuries. Is it how our pitchers is it?
- 30:15You know guys that with a lot of Indians in the miners, it
- 30:18feels like literally everything is an indicator for an injury for a pitcher. Everybody
- 30:22that you thought was reliable just isn't. Maybe that's why Lancelim is the new
- 30:27hot thing. Yeah, he's still not all right. The next injury that
- 30:33we have, speaking of injuries to number ones and number two's Blake Snell went
- 30:37down with an abductor strain with the Giants, and so he didn't look right
- 30:42at the gate at all in any of his starts since signing with the Giants.
- 30:47There, and I'm curious, I mean, I have to imagine,
- 30:49like there's temptation and maybe slightly shallower leagues to be cutting Blake Snell. If
- 30:56you're running out of injury spots, what do you think brew is that of
- 31:00st I no, no, I mean it's I understand, I understand the
- 31:07logic there. But if you if you drafted Blake Snell for E ra A,
- 31:12then you started a from a flawed premise. Blake Snell was not there
- 31:17for your era. He was not there for your whip. He is there
- 31:18for your strikeouts. And you know, I think that if you look at
- 31:22early he's he's kind of looked a little all over the place. You know,
- 31:26there is a you know, double digits, not generally good as a
- 31:29starter from what I've heard. But you know, I do think that he's
- 31:33he's going to come back once he's healthy. He's going to deliver the strikeouts.
- 31:37He's still going to be risky, he's still going to be all over
- 31:38the place. That's just the Lake Snell profile. But it looks like there's
- 31:44a good chance, you know, he's already scheduled through a bullpen session.
- 31:47There's a good chance he could get back with relatively with the minimum. Hopefully
- 31:51that kind of restarts him from a little better, better spot here. So
- 31:56if somebody's moved on from Blake Snell, I'm I'm picking him up. I'm
- 32:00interested in him. I'm also not like chasing him by any means, because
- 32:04he's still likes this very high variability outcome guy. But you know, strikeouts
- 32:08are needed, and with all these big strikeout names going down, like a
- 32:14guy like Snell has a pretty big advantage if you have some stability elsewhere.
- 32:19Yeah, and it's a lot of like, the peripherals were still pretty solid
- 32:22for Blake Snell pitching. You know, the k's were down a little bit,
- 32:27but obviously he was working in to form. The ground ball rate was
- 32:30there though the actual like barrel percentages and hard hit rates were in line with
- 32:36the past couple of years. It's just that he had a four ten BABBP
- 32:37and I don't know if I've ever seen it this low, but his left
- 32:40on base percentage was thirty nine point six. I thought at first that was
- 32:44his ground ball rate on fandrafts, but that's his lob rate. So that's
- 32:49what's really driving that eleven fifty seven ear right right now. You can see
- 32:52that as his EXPIP is three seventy two. So I think that he is
- 32:57just normal Blake Snell and you just got to ride with it if you did
- 33:00pick him up. Don't play matches with playstyle. Just enjoy the fact he's
- 33:06on the West coast, Plug him in, go to bed, and hope
- 33:08for the best. All right, And we've got another number one or number
- 33:14two starting picture down this week, as it looks like Hazus Lozardo is out
- 33:19with a flexer strain. These are always really scary injuries because as I just
- 33:24mixed up with John, means like it's a pretty big harbinger for Tommy John
- 33:30surgery. And before he was even diagnosed with the flexer strain, Luzardo was
- 33:35originally old, you know, input on the al because of a sore elbow.
- 33:39So this isn't looking great for where it's going to go for Hazus Lozardo.
- 33:46This allows somebody who's actually he's shoving tonight, and that is a Roderie
- 33:52Munos. I've never even heard of him, but he has now entered the
- 33:55Marlin's rotation as yeah, I mean they've gotten entire rotation on the I l
- 34:02between Ocontra, Braxton, Garrett, Luzardo jury Perez A J. Puck.
- 34:07So there's still somehow managing to run starters out there in Miami. But what
- 34:14do you think this means for haz Use Lozardo and anybody maybe that you might
- 34:19be interested in Miami that's currently in the rotation or might be in the rotation
- 34:23from the minor leagues. Well, first of all, I'm just trying to
- 34:27understand Rodberie Munoz. Here is as you look at the rush resource and there's
- 34:32a nice little column says how was he acquired? And he was purchased.
- 34:37He was purchased from Pittsburgh. So, uh, that leaves lots to be
- 34:42desired to pittsforphs like just give me, give me by, buy me a
- 34:45big macmeal and a guy. But you know, yeah, I say,
- 34:51there's just not much interesting here. Uh. I'm I'm very worried about Luzardo.
- 34:57He's always been kind of injury prone guy, always been a little off
- 35:00kills. It's like, if he's healthy, he can be really good kind
- 35:02of guy. And when you go down with elbow issues and then you get
- 35:08diagnosed with Fletcher strain, doesn't take a rocket scientist to know those things are
- 35:14all connected. And I'm I'm I hate to say it, and I don't
- 35:19want to be naked Nancy, but I'm just waiting for the next one with
- 35:21Tommy John again for Jesus Lzardo. Like that's like that just is the direction
- 35:25of that that these go. And there's just very little information coming out,
- 35:30you know. I guess that there's silver lighting. I just don't don't know
- 35:34what the Marlins can do if Max Meyer gets back in this rotation. I'm
- 35:37very very excited about that because I think Max Meyers looked fantastic when he's been
- 35:42up, and he's got a fantastic pedigree, So I just don't know why
- 35:45he has not been called back up. I think maybe the Marlin's already just
- 35:50phoned in for the year and and taking a break. So there's my still
- 35:53line, I'll take Max Meyer if he if he gets back in the rotation.
- 35:58Yeah, And I think it's a lot. They're just really trying to
- 36:02taper the innings for Max Meyer because he's only pitching every seven days down in
- 36:07tripa A. So I really thought you were gonna say they're just trying to
- 36:09tank. Yeah, they're trying to just make sure that they get enough innings
- 36:15out of him and keep them semi healthy ish coming off of that Timmy John
- 36:19surgery. So that's who I was looking at too. I really think that
- 36:22Max Meyer is worth stashing on some benches out there as he is in the
- 36:28miners, because I think he should be up relatively soon, because I think
- 36:32they're going to try to do a little bit what they did with Uri Perez
- 36:37last year down to Miami, which is kind of bring Max Meyer up for
- 36:40a few weeks, pitch him on a normal MLB schedule, send him back
- 36:45down, give him more rest, and cycle through that a couple more times.
- 36:51Okay, well, part of the re I guess I should have paired
- 36:52this one up with the trist and cautious injury. But part of the reason
- 36:58that Boston Red Sox lineup look so dire running around the golf is that Masatak
- 37:01Yoshida today has also been placed on the AyL with a hand issue, and
- 37:07so this one should be a relatively short stint. I just kind of want
- 37:10to throw that out there because he's been really rough this year, and I
- 37:15don't know if like you are considering like I've moved on from him in the
- 37:22leagues that I had him either you know, trading him or trying to just
- 37:27find a different source of a bat because Yoshid has just been really disappointing and
- 37:34as the kind of resident expert on top one hundred bats, I'm wondering if
- 37:37you can decipher for me at all, like what is going on with Yoshida
- 37:42and can we have faith in him going forward when he comes back from the
- 37:45al Yeah. You usually, you know, as I'm doing rankings, you
- 37:50know, I've got i'd say about one hundred and twenty one hundred and thirty
- 37:52guys that I'm kind of playing around with them. There's I'm check is there
- 37:55anybody else that should be squeaking in or maybe playing like that? Last like
- 38:01he say, thirty spots the top one hundreds, like so squished together like
- 38:05you can, you can put anybody in there because there's a lot. It
- 38:09almost a hot streak. It gets, you know, raises intrigue. But
- 38:14for Yoshida here, like I'm I'm generally he's not generally in that one thirty
- 38:19even I'm talking about he just his overall profile is more about volume than it
- 38:24is about like being fantastic at anyone category. You know, he will he'll
- 38:30deliver an okay average. He's got a little power, maybe a little speed
- 38:35in the counting SATs are gonna be eh, especially in the lineup that we
- 38:38just talked about. So overall, like, I think he's an okay player,
- 38:45but he's more of that one of those like maybe a fourth or fifth
- 38:46outfielder. And if we're talking to hand injury, is that gonna Zapp something?
- 38:52Not the whole lot of power left to Zapp. So generally I've not
- 38:57been too excited about Yoshida in the first place, and you know, having
- 39:00a little bit more of injury here. Yeah, I think he is probably
- 39:05what he was last year. I think we're looking at a guy that hits
- 39:07maybe ten to fifteen homers, maybe stills five bases seventy RBIs. Like,
- 39:13it's not bad, it's not where you're like, it's not the kind of
- 39:16guy that you're investing in to win your league. He's the kind of guy
- 39:19you're investing in because you just lost Mike Trout. Yeah, that's where you're
- 39:22at. Yeah, I And I'm honestly like, I'm worried about Yoshida kind
- 39:27of his long term viability in the league too, because he's got a huge
- 39:31hole at the top of the zone that you can see it on his span
- 39:35Grafts heat maps, you can see it on a Savant page on his wiff
- 39:37percentage that I think he struggles a lot with velocity up in the zone,
- 39:43and the league is just exploiting it because that is what a lot of the
- 39:46league throws now, is the ninety five plus mile an hour heat at the
- 39:51top of the zone. And if you can't catch up to that, they're
- 39:53just going to keep pounding it over and over and over and until Yoshida adjusts
- 39:59and show that he can start handling that heat up in the top of the
- 40:01zone. I think he's a pretty empty batting average guy. That is probably
- 40:08where it becomes useful in a fifteen teamer, you know, because you need
- 40:12the batting average and somebody who plays every day, but not somebody you ever
- 40:16want to be rostering in a twelve team because he just produces such little in
- 40:23terms of counting stats for you when he's in your lineup. Yeah, it's
- 40:29when you're calling card like is late patience and that's it. Not a whole
- 40:35lot to the phone home. So good another good like real world player here
- 40:42and should be a you know, he's very good to be in the lineup
- 40:45for the Red Sox. There's a lot to like for a fan of the
- 40:49Red Sox. It's just not for the fantasy game. Yeah, Okay.
- 40:52The other injury that we have is Zach Geloff's second basement for the Oakland A's
- 40:57went down with a strained oblique and this one seems to be rather minor because
- 41:02he's already got a note today that he is starting to take grounders and play
- 41:07catch, so he might be feeling alright to be able to do that.
- 41:09But we'll see when he starts swinging up bad again, because that's the million
- 41:14dollar question with your oblique. There again, another oblique injury where we're not
- 41:19totally sure like where it could go, but hopefully it's pretty short. For
- 41:22Zach Geloff, he's been really solid. I think for what you where you
- 41:30drafted him coming into the year, that he's been a little bit like a
- 41:35right handed early Brandon low Laud. I knew it, yeah, but like,
- 41:43oh man, I was like say Loo, say Loo, say Low
- 41:45and Low came out. But I think like this type of player is kind
- 41:52of sneaky, useful and fantasy just because he's giving you so much power production
- 41:57and it's a little bit of the opposite of what we just talked about with
- 42:00Yoshida. And I know you've been a Gelloff fan, So what do you
- 42:05think that this kind of can how it will shape his twenty twenty four season
- 42:10going forward? Yeah, I mean, I'm right there with you, like
- 42:15I I liked, I think the Oakland penalty is a little bit more than
- 42:19what needs to be with a guy like Gelloff, you know, he he
- 42:22do. You know just last year he went fourteen, fourteen and sixty nine
- 42:24games his rookie year, and you know, he was like, well can
- 42:28he keep that up and kind of extrapolate a whole season. That's a thirty
- 42:30thirty guy. I don't think i'll's a thirty thirty guy, but he's a
- 42:34twenty He could be a twenty twenty guy without not without really squinting here,
- 42:37and he was off to that pretty well to start the season. Strikeouts were
- 42:42up a little bit. Luck wasn't necessarily going his way, wasn't hitting the
- 42:45ball incredibly hard, so things, you know, he wasn't just he wasn't
- 42:51like lighting the world on fire. But because he had, he helps you
- 42:53in the power department, in the speed department, a little bit all over.
- 42:57He's really really sneaky valuable. The oblique scares me to no end.
- 43:02To your point, taking grounders take doesn't take your oblique to take grounders?
- 43:09Is he throwing the grounders back like? That's why I want to know.
- 43:13Is he trying to turn two like that? That's where you know it really
- 43:15comes in. And so I he played catches well, so I don't know
- 43:20if he but usually when I when I say playing catch y eye and just
- 43:25catch catching. But hey, uh, never know how you can skew the
- 43:30news here. But I think he's gonna's still gonna be a little while before
- 43:35he comes back. And you know, I already traded him in a league
- 43:37that you and I are in. I flipped him pretty pretty quickly, mainly
- 43:42because somebody else was asking about him, like, well, hey, oblique
- 43:45injury scare me. It could be a month or two before it comes back
- 43:47if I can, if I can get something that I need. I also
- 43:51lost my trout the same time in that league, so I needed some outfield
- 43:54help. But you know, I'm not I'm not hating on get off here,
- 44:00but I again the oblique worries me. If you're if you're able to
- 44:04wait a month or so or somebody's you know, dropped him, absolutely pick
- 44:07him up. He will be valuable. It's just a matter. It's gonna
- 44:10it's gonna be probably June, mid June. Before that we feel him back
- 44:15full time. Yeah, definitely. Okay, Well that runs through all of
- 44:20the injuries, I believe. Let me just check him. Will be trade
- 44:22rumors one more time to see if there's there was another Tommy John injury.
- 44:28Toulis Patino, but he's not terribly fantasy relevant for us, so we'll get
- 44:32into some more fun. News says we're gonna start having more and more of
- 44:37these over the coming weeks. We've got call ups, and I guess this
- 44:40isn't quite as fun. It's called downs to emotions that are related to Actually
- 44:46that's what the first two are as Jackson Holiday shortstop for I guess, second
- 44:52basement for the Orioles has been demoted back to Triple A now after he struggled
- 44:57out of the gate in the Major. And really, I mean, I
- 45:01think if you're looking for the rest of twenty twenty four, this is probably
- 45:07a little bit worrisome. Considering the draft price you had to pay for Jackson
- 45:10Holiday. But this is part of the reason I wasn't paying that draft price
- 45:15for Jackson Holiday. On top of I just wasn't sure kind of where the
- 45:20Homers and stole On bases were gonna be. But I mean, you win
- 45:23some, you lose some because Jackson Curio's started pretty hot from that spot,
- 45:28and obviously Ellie's been fantastic. But what do you think you're doing with Jackson
- 45:32Holiday for the rest of twenty twenty four kind of focused on redraft leagues because
- 45:37I don't even think we entertained the dynasty side, because you know, it
- 45:40wasn't enough bight appearances to really shift the understanding of Jackson Holiday long term.
- 45:46Yeah, I mean, I don't think it to your point. Long term,
- 45:49It doesn't change my perspective on Jackson Jackson Holiday of being a you know,
- 45:52a great hitter down the line. But what it does concern me about
- 45:55is the big reason the Oriole's sent him down is they didn't really need him,
- 46:01like they needed the version of him that was going to be a breakout
- 46:06rookie and just gonna be fantastic. They didn't need him to be scuffling,
- 46:10and so send them back down, give them some more time there, get
- 46:15your super two out of them whatever, like if you're playing well. So
- 46:19I think it's gonna be a little while before he's back. I don't think
- 46:21they're just gonna send them down and then bring them right back up. I
- 46:22think they're gonna send them down. He's got to get hot again and then
- 46:25he's gonna get me come back up. So Midsummer, I wouldn't be shocked.
- 46:30If it's gonna be until Midsummer where he comes up, you're probably waiting
- 46:34for somebody to get hurt, and that would be and even then there's other
- 46:39guys. There's like there's a really good system there in Baltimore, Like they've
- 46:45got guys on the bench and sending in the miners that would be starting for
- 46:47other teams in that kind of that youth equation. So yeah, I'm I
- 46:52would assume you can find a buyer for Jackson Holliday because I think there's a
- 46:57buyer out there that thinks that you're selling low and he's going to be back
- 47:00up and just killing it, and everybody wants to find the young new guy
- 47:05that's gonna, you know, break out and say they've found Horden Carroll or
- 47:08you know whoever it may be. So yeah, I'm I'm kind of looking
- 47:13to move on from Jackson Holiday. Yeah, I think so too, because
- 47:15I mean I think at this point, honestly, Kobe Mayo probably comes up
- 47:20before Jackson Holliday gets another crack, because that is types of lightning in a
- 47:24bottle that can really carry a team. I mean, we've already seen it
- 47:28with Colton Kuncer that like he's done it, you know, for a couple
- 47:30of weeks. That if they want to do that in Baltimore now, I
- 47:35think they look at Kobe Mayo first and really let Jackson Holiday get his head
- 47:37right Hunter and Orby too. Rby's there, Aston Kyrestad, which I know
- 47:43I'm just gonna make a bear the lead and we're and jump to that.
- 47:46Aston Krestyle was called up too, And so it's not for lack of having
- 47:52guys that are there and willing to make an impact. So I say that,
- 47:57what are your thoughts on on Crestad in the same Holiday down Kerstad up?
- 48:01Is he does he get the playing time? I don't think so.
- 48:05If Colton Kowser had been or to start the season. Honestly, I had
- 48:10no expectations like this for Kowser coming into the not at all. So the
- 48:15fact, I mean he has started to scuffle that maybe that that is the
- 48:19way in is that I always thought long term Kirstad was the better bat than
- 48:24Kowser. That just a better overall profile, and Kowser has always struggled with
- 48:30strikeouts on top of it too, like Ryan O'Hearn has morphed into an all
- 48:36star level bat and just it is not going to let that opportunity go anytime
- 48:40soon, I think. And so yeah, I mean I don't own any
- 48:45kiersted sures because I am just the way you are with Jackson Holiday that I
- 48:51just don't see how all the playing time sorts out. And I'd rather have
- 48:55something steadier where I'm not having to rock some of these guys and play the
- 49:01hot hand and try to figure it out, because I figured it always doesn't
- 49:06work out well, like I figure, like it always ends up where the
- 49:09weeks where it looks like Kirstad's not gonna play, I'm sure he's gonna come
- 49:14in and like hit a couple of grand slams on my bench, But what
- 49:16are you doing with Heston Kirstad in any leagues that you might have him.
- 49:22Yeah, I mean I'm holding on to him for now. I'm just wondering,
- 49:25you know, we if you look that lineup up and down, there's
- 49:29just not a lot of space there. But I'm wondering if there's gonna be
- 49:31an opportunity for him to maybe you know, get a few of bats and
- 49:36make some noise. There's one clear week spot Romanus there. Now, I'm
- 49:43not sure how you shuffle guys around to get Kirstaid in the line up there.
- 49:49There's not a clear other you know, third basement on the team or
- 49:53enough enough. You have a lot of outfielders on that team. But you
- 50:00know, I think I'm holding him just for now. Now, if there's
- 50:02a Joe Adele out there, or there's somebody else, I will absolutely make
- 50:07that cut. But I'm giving him another week or two just to see if
- 50:09he squeaks in that plane time gets hot and then starts to try to stake
- 50:13stake his name in there. Because I hate to say it, I wouldn't
- 50:16be shocked if if Cedric Mullins is this is finally the time where he gets
- 50:21moved early summer or something like that here, because there's enough youth there,
- 50:24there's enough other guys coming up. But you know, to your point,
- 50:30Mayo or Norby getting getting called up feels imminent to me, and you know,
- 50:35yours dead trying to get some a spot in the outfield there maybe Mullins
- 50:37moves or something like that, I wouldn't be shocked. Yeah, okay,
- 50:44Well let's get into another top prospect that got demoted this week, and as
- 50:49outfielder Jordan Walker from the Cardinals getting sent down after just I'm not even sure
- 50:55like how to describe how he's struggling because the Cardinals set him down saying that
- 51:00he needs to work on hinting sliders after starting the season with a forty five
- 51:05WRC plus a one two nine two nine line. But I'm really starting to
- 51:14sour on Jordan Walker just because I don't think this is the right organization for
- 51:19him, just the way that you know, when honestly anybody has left the
- 51:22Cardinals as of late, Laine Thomas, Randy Rose, Arena, on and
- 51:29on and on in terms of just the players that have found their footing,
- 51:34because I think just Walker, it seems like a confidence thing when you're watching
- 51:38him in the box that he just doesn't seem to be sure of himself and
- 51:44like trusting in his abilities that like it's very much like armchair doctoring. But
- 51:52you it feels like when he's going to swing a lot, he's thinking about
- 51:58all the things that the coaching staff has told him and trying to like process
- 52:02that in the moment of the swing, and it just is too much that
- 52:07Like, I think it's just a bad fit in terms of organization because this
- 52:10is the type of player who I think just has to let himself play and
- 52:16just let like the tools play. And so I'm really interested in your take
- 52:22on this because I'm wondering if you're seeing the same thing or if you're still
- 52:27heartened by what Jordan Walker could be in the long term for Saint Louis.
- 52:32Yeah, I'm probably a little a little more rosy on than you are.
- 52:36I think you're make a ballot point because the Cardinals are kind of known for
- 52:39bringing like these baths seem like they're just going to be unbelievable, and they
- 52:43gets the majors and they just kind of average out right, Like Harrison Bader
- 52:47was amazing, amazing, the miners average out telling, Carlson was amazing in
- 52:51the Major you know, you know, you just keep seeing these guys that
- 52:53just can't seem to get over that hump when they get to the majors.
- 52:58From a hitting perspective, like it does feel like something with that hitting mechanism
- 53:02once you get to Saint Louis just isn't doing it. It's not the best
- 53:05ballpark to hit him by any means. But at the same time, like
- 53:08the like, absolutely the talent is there, Like I don't question the talents
- 53:13at all. He is a massive human being. He is strong, he
- 53:16has a very pretty swing. Like the things look good for him. What
- 53:21concerns me the most though, and for my favors overall outlook, even if
- 53:25he does go somewhere else, he's got some Yondi Diaz vibes for me,
- 53:30which means we don't put the ball in the air enough to take advantage of
- 53:34the fact that we're a massive human beings. And you know, his ground
- 53:37ball rate this year is fifty percent. His flyball rate's also up because he's
- 53:42hit no line drives at all. It's not how you want to get the
- 53:47fly ball right up. You should want the ground ball rate to go down
- 53:51and replace that with line drives. But who am I to talk from my
- 53:54basement, But you know, I think that talents there. I still think
- 54:00he can be a really, really good hitter, but he's actually has to
- 54:05make some adjustments. And that's where I'm a little concerned, is can that
- 54:08happen. I'm hopeful that he goes back down, he kind of figures things
- 54:13out and he comes back up. But I'm probably not buying him for the
- 54:16rest of the season. And I just don't that Cardinals line up like up
- 54:22and down. They just look lost, absolutely lost. Yeah, I mean
- 54:25I posted on this in my article on Saturday. They actually had that twenty
- 54:30seventh team, like twenty seventh rated team WRC plus offense site right now.
- 54:37It was just above the White Sox, the Rockies and the A's. I
- 54:43think. So it's not territory you want to be in. No, not
- 54:47generally where you want to be. And yeah, so speaking of some White
- 54:52Sox, that WRC might be increasing here as Tommy fam has been called up
- 54:59and it is Tommy Fam time now in Chicago. He led the into a
- 55:04sweep of the Rays over this past weekend to double their win total in the
- 55:07season, and has looked every bit as good as I think we were both
- 55:13touting all offseason. He just needed the opportunity, as in his first twenty
- 55:17four played appearances he has a homer, six runs with a one to seventy
- 55:23three WRC plus, which I mean it's twenty four plate appearances, but I
- 55:28mean he should be playing in the outfield or dhing every day for the White
- 55:30Sox and hitting second or third. So I certainly this is another reminder that
- 55:37if Tommy fam is still sitting out there on your waiver wire, go pick
- 55:40him up immediately, because I think he's viable in every league out there right
- 55:44now. Yeah, I'm absolutely with you. You know, I think he
- 55:47homewared today. I'm not sure if that was looking tood. That's if it
- 55:52counts. And what you what you ran to well, when you're doing twenty
- 55:55four flat appearances, you got to make sure you're up to the minute.
- 55:58But I mean, he's he's a solid for outfielder, like I probably over
- 56:05solid for outfielder because he he will give you a little bit all across the
- 56:07board. From a staff perspective, He's not gonna hurt you anywhere. And
- 56:12I just hope people held on long enough, like held on long enough to
- 56:16reap the rewards of him, because you know, it was it was just
- 56:21a matter of time before Fam found a job and came back and was reliable.
- 56:24So I'm all in, Tommy Fam. He should be free if he's
- 56:30still out there for you and it's gonna pay off, it's it's gonna pay
- 56:34off. I have no questions about it. He's been good really pretty much
- 56:37wherever he goes. Don't don't get me wrong. He's not gonna hit three
- 56:39hundred and thirty thirty, but we're talking, you know, two fifty fifteen
- 56:44fifteen for a guy that's free, that's that's very much a playable player.
- 56:51Yeah, absolutely, okay. And then also on the flip side of like
- 56:54a X white sock, we have jose Ah Bray You being demoted by the
- 57:00Astros with what a stretch of a month that was from JOSEA Bray You just
- 57:07absolutely struggling out of the gate with a I didn't check it recently, but
- 57:13let me pull back up. It's a negative like forty something. It might
- 57:16be negative fifty WRC plus now, oh, just negative twenty. He recovered,
- 57:21so it was a negative twenty WRC plus with the ninety nine, one
- 57:24fifty six, one thirteen line. That is so brutal, and I'm not
- 57:30sure. I think this might just about be the end of Jose bray You
- 57:36if maybe not in the league. Like I think there's a possibility he gets
- 57:40a little more run as like a second division sort of player on like an
- 57:44Oakland A's or something, But I just don't know if he has the bats
- 57:49speed to kind of hang in the majors anymore. The crazy thing here with
- 57:54a bray You two is that he got sent all the way down to the
- 57:57spring training complex, reminiscent of Alec Minoa's struggles last year with the Toronto Blue
- 58:01Jays. So that's I mean, that shows you just how down and out
- 58:05a bray You is. That he's going back to spring training and just hitting
- 58:09in the cages to grind this out with the complex league. And then the
- 58:15flip side here though in Houston, is that Joey Lo Braffdo is coming up
- 58:19and getting full time gig. We've talked about him here and praised him.
- 58:23This is actually another guy too when since we've discussed him, I've gotten a
- 58:28little bit more interested because the strikeout rate had worried me down in Triple A
- 58:32this year, but I had forgotten about that automated zone, which I think
- 58:37was playing into that a little bit. And so low Braffito should be playable
- 58:42in just about every league right now, just because you've got to take the
- 58:45shot on the upside there right group. Yeah, absolutely, I'm I'm very
- 58:49excited about Joey low Perfido. I was. I've been on for quite some
- 58:52time now, and I think there is just a lot, a lot of
- 58:57potential there in the power. It's sad for jose O Brew. I think
- 59:00you're right. I don't know what we have the Mendoza line, what's the
- 59:04what's one hundred? Like when you're hitting below one hundred? Like, is
- 59:07that a thing? Do we have a name for that? When you're when
- 59:10you're when you're ops is like an awful obp. Yeah, Like so I
- 59:15feel bad because jose Brew, like for for probably five six seven years,
- 59:20like he was just locking in, great player, great guy, Like there's
- 59:25a lot to like this. So this this is this is disheartening for a
- 59:30Brew. But obviously I'm a little biased, but I think he should be
- 59:31a Hall of Famer because like he came over when he was twenty seven.
- 59:36If you gave him credit for all of his work in Cuba, he won
- 59:39an MVP. I mean, I think he he deserves to be a Hall
- 59:45of Famer once you kind of roll in the Cuban stats because he played started
- 59:49playing when he's super young in the professional league SOUN in Cuba. Yeah,
- 59:52if you look at it, like he has such that eight years since coming
- 59:57over starting age twenty seven, where he was basically a thirty home run one
- 1:00:00hundred RBI guy hitting two ninety three hundred, like outside of like one injury
- 1:00:08in COVID, Like, you know, he's he's definitely a fantastic player because
- 1:00:15if he was having this, you know at thirty seven, after he came
- 1:00:17up at he was twenty one, so add like six seasons to this on
- 1:00:22the front end of just call it twenty five homers. You know, we're
- 1:00:27talking about a guy that's hit four hundred homers. Like, yeah, you're
- 1:00:30you're right. It's it's a I don't think you're gonna be right, but
- 1:00:36but I think it's a very fantastic argument. But back on Loper Fito,
- 1:00:39I think he's got all day playing time, and you know, he looks
- 1:00:45like he's gonna he canna be up for good. Uh So, I've I've
- 1:00:49definitely picked up Loper Fito many places, and I'm I'm pluging him in the
- 1:00:53line up here and there still trying to figure out he does have second base
- 1:00:55eligibility a number of places as well. Uh so first base, second base,
- 1:01:00outfield eligibilities. That's just icing on the cake with Loper Fiedo. Yeah,
- 1:01:05and should pick up first too. He didn't quite he didn't quite get
- 1:01:08enough games down there at first base to start qualifying for this year. But
- 1:01:15you would think that he's gonna start getting playing time at first as they're currently
- 1:01:19playing John Singleton there and he's soon although he's actually been holding his own which
- 1:01:24has been a really great story as well. So and I even suggested picking
- 1:01:30up Jonathan John Singleton in really really deep leagues, you know, like only
- 1:01:35leagues. But it does look like he's got a path to playing time here
- 1:01:37for a little while along with Loper Fetal. Okay, the next call up
- 1:01:43that we've got is one that really tickles me because I've been excited for this
- 1:01:47guy since last year when he started stealing so many bags. That is Tyler
- 1:01:52Black for the Milwaukee Brewers currently qualifies at third base, but should get playing
- 1:02:00time kind of all over at the diamond. He's played in corner outfield spots,
- 1:02:04first base, second base in his time in the minors. I think
- 1:02:07currently it looks like the Brewers are gonna put him more so at first base.
- 1:02:13So they's been pushing reet Hoskins towards dhing and then you know they'll let
- 1:02:17Tyler Black slowly but surely push Jake Bowers out of the nest there at first
- 1:02:23base, I think. And so I think Tyler Black also makes a very
- 1:02:28interesting player for our playerpool, given there aren't many speed first corner guys in
- 1:02:34our player pool right now. So, brew how are you treating Tyler Black
- 1:02:37going forward? I's Tyler Black's really hard for me because there's there's not like
- 1:02:44if you watch him, there's nothing that jumps off the page, like it
- 1:02:47doesn't doesn't have this big crazy pedigree, like there's nothing. Tyler Black's just
- 1:02:52Tyler Black. He's a third round pick, like so you know he's he's
- 1:02:57decent, but like he just does everything just above average or maybe slightly with
- 1:03:04the speed, and so like I try to poke holes looking at his minor
- 1:03:07league approach. And we're talking about a guy that walks as much as he
- 1:03:10strikes out. You know, he's he's got real power, Like he's not
- 1:03:15crazy power, but maybe twenty homer power. Maybe maybe give a few years
- 1:03:22before that really clicks in. But he's done, you know, some some
- 1:03:27decent power. He's always hit for a pretty good average, Like you look
- 1:03:30across, it's just things just keep looking good. Like I'm having to couple
- 1:03:36poking holes in Tyler Black, and he's he's never really seemed to struggle either
- 1:03:39in the minors. He just seems that whatever he's gone, he's done well
- 1:03:44since he was a you know, since he entered the league, you know,
- 1:03:46as as a twenty year old, he's held his own. So I
- 1:03:51really like Tyler Black. I don't I don't think he gets the fanfare he
- 1:03:54deserves. And I also think he doesn't have a clear spot. But I
- 1:03:59think he's gonna every day so that, like again, he might have better
- 1:04:02you know, eligibility. So I like I like Black. I'm uh,
- 1:04:08yeah, it's gonna be fun, fun to watch a cool day of cool
- 1:04:11these days here with call ups. Yeah, And I think I also like
- 1:04:15Black too, just because I don't get the projections on him where they're all
- 1:04:19calling for like a two forty average. He's spent all last year in the
- 1:04:24miners hovering around three hundred. He was around three hundred in Triple A this
- 1:04:28year. Uh, they're all calling for him to strike out around twenty percent
- 1:04:31of the time, which I guess he did down in double A, but
- 1:04:33he cut that in Triple A. He's got great just plate discipline, which
- 1:04:39is like you said, I don't think he's got world kind of like breaking
- 1:04:44power, but he makes so much contact that the balls are going to kind
- 1:04:47of find their way into the right field bleachers, I think from time to
- 1:04:51time. And I mean certainly the upside here is that he steals something like
- 1:04:57twenty twenty five bags and maybe even more. Weren't that Like it's tough to
- 1:05:00sometimes get to read on how the stolen bases will port across from the minor
- 1:05:05leagues, But yeah, I think he's going to be extremely useful in I
- 1:05:12think maybe I'm not quite picking him up in like twelve teamers right now,
- 1:05:15but like certainly knowing that if I'm looking for stolen bases, he hit cleanup
- 1:05:20for the Brewers today. Or yesterday in his debut. So you're looking at
- 1:05:25somebody who's slotted right into the top of that lineup in Milwaukee, I will
- 1:05:30say, I am picking up in twelve teamers. Twelve teamers, yeah,
- 1:05:33you know, eligibility wise, I'm looking at, yeah, who he's he's
- 1:05:36got second and third base eligibility, he should pick up first base to your
- 1:05:41point. And you know, so I think that you know, that flexibility
- 1:05:46plus what to me looks like a good floor is a guy that I'm picking
- 1:05:51up. I maybe in weekly leagues, I might be a little bit more
- 1:05:55hesitant, uh, just because I could see him, you know, not
- 1:05:59having a clutter locked in the spot where he plays every day. But it
- 1:06:03feels like the super utility type thing might be his his calling hard to start
- 1:06:08until he really pushes Hoskins or somebody else out of the way. But yeah,
- 1:06:11I'm investing them even in twelve teamers. Okay, yeah, I think
- 1:06:15that's fair too. And another call up we've got that. I honestly,
- 1:06:19I'm a little surprised by this one that the Rockies have come through for us
- 1:06:24and they've called up Jordan Beck to play the outfield for them with Nolan Jones
- 1:06:28hitting the eel. We didn't cover Nolan Jones and the injuries just because what
- 1:06:32a disappointment. If you do have Nolan Jones that, like you want to
- 1:06:35talk maybe most disappointing fantasy players so far this year. I think Nolan Jones
- 1:06:42is in the conversation for that. But I do think a lot of the
- 1:06:46poor performance was him battling a back injury and trying to play through it.
- 1:06:50So I am hoping that if I have Nolan Jones, there are a few
- 1:06:55like shallow leagues where I've actually moved on from him. But you know,
- 1:06:58if you've invested some amount of draft capital in twelve teamers for him, I
- 1:07:03think that he's still worth holding on too if you've got the iel spots.
- 1:07:08But certainly, like yeah, if you're desperate for just a warm body,
- 1:07:12I totally understand if you've got to move on from Nolan Jones. And what
- 1:07:15about like swapping straight in for Jordan Beck. Do you think that you are
- 1:07:19moving in to Jordan Beck maybe the same way we've talked about these other guys
- 1:07:24are maybe a little more caution what Jordan Beck is to Beck's profile. Yeah,
- 1:07:29I'm moving right in as well. Okay, Jordan Beck. I all
- 1:07:33three of these guys really intrigued me. None of them are like the upper
- 1:07:38echelon prospects, but they're all guys that absolutely could be I stay top center
- 1:07:45position when you get the outfield, little questionable there, but like pure starter,
- 1:07:50clear middle, the roads, starter, kind of cornerstone of your team.
- 1:07:56And so I'm picking back up as well. I'm especially with that Colorado
- 1:08:00air. Hopefully, you know, there's something to be said. He's looked
- 1:08:03great this this year at Triple A. He's there. You know. I
- 1:08:08was looking at the leader boards of prospects, looking at guys like twenty five
- 1:08:12and under, and there was four guys the miners this year five home runs
- 1:08:16and five steals Joeylo Berfido, Jordan Beck. Then you had no Casey Schmidt
- 1:08:26out in San Francisco, who's kind of his prospect star has has faded a
- 1:08:31little bit, said Costague will do that for you too. It will Colby
- 1:08:35Thomas out for the Athletics. He's a third round pick who's really looked really
- 1:08:41good for the Athletics over the last few years, and he's all the way
- 1:08:44up in Double A. So just a quick call out to the guy to
- 1:08:46maybe keep an eye on that's kind of under the radar. Cole Colby Thomas
- 1:08:50for the twenty three for the Athletics would not be surprised to see him get
- 1:08:56a look later this year for the Athletics with a pretty well rounded profile.
- 1:09:00So siphoning Beck Beck and Low Braffito's look look great, and so both of
- 1:09:06them I'm excited about. So I've expoused a lot, a whole lot of
- 1:09:12all three of these guys. What's your if you were to rank these three,
- 1:09:15what would that look like for you? Between Low, Braffito, Black
- 1:09:18and beck Yep, I think that sounds like a law firm, by the
- 1:09:24way, and I think, I know this just goes against what I said
- 1:09:32where I was like picking up Lowprafito everywhere, but maybe not Black. But
- 1:09:36I think I go Black, Low Perfito Beck, because yeah, I do
- 1:09:42think that Black has the best kind of chance at turning into something special,
- 1:09:49especially with the stolen bases and just given where he's hitting in that Milwaukee lineup
- 1:09:55that's been fantastic. H Low Braffido and the Astros. The Astros have been
- 1:10:00struggling a bit, and that Rockies offense, Like I keep falling for it,
- 1:10:04like it's definitely like a wily coyote sort of thing with them going to
- 1:10:09Coors all the time. I mean, this past week it was brutal for
- 1:10:12some of those dudes that if you were following my waiver wires and trying to
- 1:10:15stream those Rockies bats, they didn't do so hot in Coors or in Mexico
- 1:10:19City because the team is just bad. And so that does make me worry
- 1:10:26a little bit about Beck and just kind of honestly a lot of those Rockies
- 1:10:29out there that it used to be a viable strategy to just kind of stream
- 1:10:31them at home, that the offense is so poor right now that it's becoming
- 1:10:38hard to do that. What about you? What's your order? Yeah,
- 1:10:41I'm not I mean, how can you beat that different with three guys?
- 1:10:44I'm not too different. I'm probably a low perfido black Beck. You know,
- 1:10:47I kind of kind of the order I stated them, But again I
- 1:10:51don't argue with what what you said. I think the I see a little
- 1:10:55higher ceiling for Lowperfiito a little faster than I do for Black. I think
- 1:10:59long time you could see that flip where low braffedo caps out because he's the
- 1:11:03speed, isn't I don't think he's going to translate as well. And Black
- 1:11:08has much more speed, and so low Berfedo might pop out at a twenty
- 1:11:13five fifteen type guy, whereas Black might top out a twenty forty type guy.
- 1:11:17Like there's you know, but again, I'm really excited about all three
- 1:11:23of these guys. A number of spots I've grabbed one, two or three
- 1:11:27of them and made some some tough cuts to do so. But this is
- 1:11:32these are the kind of guys that I absolutely in especially April May timeframe,
- 1:11:36I will pay extra fab for him. I'll I'll drop an extra guy for
- 1:11:42him, because I would be shocked we're sending it in the season. One
- 1:11:45of these guys is in the conversation for a Rookie of the Year. Two
- 1:11:48of these guys are in the top threes of those like. These kind of
- 1:11:53guys are the ones that you end up talking about next year's is absolutely slam
- 1:11:57dunk keepers. So I think like a Matt McClay from last year ignored the
- 1:12:00injury this year, That's what I feel like with these guys. I think,
- 1:12:04yeah, I mean, I think a lot of them have a lot
- 1:12:06of great pedigree and of kind of flowner the radar that these are the types
- 1:12:11of guys that when they start coming up in call up season, like they
- 1:12:14can really run the table for you the rest of the season, for even
- 1:12:17redraft leagues, not even with the keypro element, because they can just catch
- 1:12:24fire and stick with their teams, especially just given what aging curves look like.
- 1:12:29Contes that players seem to only be best almost like right when they hit
- 1:12:34the league half the times, just because yeah, all your physical skills are
- 1:12:39there and they kind of degrade from there because time only moves one way.
- 1:12:45All right, We've got one last call up and mostly because this is kind
- 1:12:47of a little bit of like a personal cheeseball guy that I love Asid Barger
- 1:12:51from the Toronto Blue Jays. He's getting an opportunity with Kevin Kiermyer hitting the
- 1:12:56injured list in Toronto, but he's been struggling right now. He only is
- 1:13:02really really struggling as he's over eighteen now or one for eighteen now with six
- 1:13:08k's that amounts to an oh fifty six, oh fifty six, oh fifty
- 1:13:12six line. As he's really just been very over anxious, I think with
- 1:13:18its opportunity in Toronto. And I love Barger just because I saw him in
- 1:13:23spring training. He's got spencer strider like thighs like, he's got the craziest
- 1:13:28quads I've ever seen on a actual like position player. And he's got great
- 1:13:34flexibility, which I think helps the Blue Jays that he can play the infield,
- 1:13:39he can play corner outfield. And this is a guy who was absolutely
- 1:13:43crushing triple A before he came up. He had a one sixty three WRC
- 1:13:45plus and just has a really sweet swing. So I'm just kind of throwing
- 1:13:50him out there that I know that he's struggled out the gate, but this
- 1:13:55could certainly be somebody who sticks in Toronto because another team, honestly, like
- 1:14:00the Cardinals, where the bats on the paper have not come to fruition and
- 1:14:04if they need to go a different route, I think Barger is gonna be
- 1:14:08the first person who gets that opportunity in Toronto. Yeah, you know,
- 1:14:13I don't I wouldn't say I'm very high on Barger, but I don't have
- 1:14:15a lot of negative to say either, Like he's those guys that doesn't excite
- 1:14:18me, doesn't scare me. He's definitely on the watch list is the way
- 1:14:23I would say I'm not I'm not rushing out to pick up barjar in probably
- 1:14:27even fourteen team leagues. I'm probably not doing anything there. Maybe Dynasty,
- 1:14:31I might if I'm throwing a bone, then if I got you know,
- 1:14:35a sixty day aisle spot opening something up, But otherwise I'm probably watching him,
- 1:14:40and with the current results, I think you can continue to watch him.
- 1:14:44Yeah, I don't think the next seven hits is gonna really do anything
- 1:14:48to him. He's got to get really hot before he really makes a name.
- 1:14:53But if he starts to say, make some good contact stuff like that,
- 1:14:56yeah, take a look. Yeah, he's got to cut down.
- 1:15:00Swing percentage right now is fifty seven percent, so you need to cut out
- 1:15:03on not getting on base. So yeah, yeah, when you're swinging at
- 1:15:09the pitches out of the zone, fifty seven percent not gonna do much for
- 1:15:14you. But okay, Yeah, we've got a couple more card topics before
- 1:15:17we hit a brake and then come back and talk Bowman twenty twenty four.
- 1:15:21The first is they dropped tops dropped this out of kind of nowhere, And
- 1:15:29I will admit that when I saw this release announcement, last week for Tops
- 1:15:33Heritage twenty twenty four mini. I thought it was just like a new type
- 1:15:38of like box in terms of the way that they had the small hobby boxes
- 1:15:44for twenty twenty three Stadium Club, you know, with just like the one
- 1:15:46hit. I thought that they had somehow made some smaller version of the hobby
- 1:15:50box for TOPS Heritage, but no, Tops went out and produced an entire
- 1:15:55mini set of twenty twenty four Tops Heritage and that was released today with some
- 1:16:02extra parallels, some like pink one of one parallels, and they look goofy.
- 1:16:06I like them. I mean, I think I'll enjoy like looking at
- 1:16:10them. I've never been too huge into like mini cards overall, just because
- 1:16:14they're a little bit of a pain to store. But Brewer, what do
- 1:16:18you think about this Tops Trritage Mini twenty twenty four release. I'm torn about
- 1:16:24it. Like to your point, the mini cards just don't do it for
- 1:16:26me. It feels so watered down. The sets are very small. So
- 1:16:30like I think in each each box, I think you said guaranteed three numbered
- 1:16:35cards, and I think we're talking about like a fifty dollars price point,
- 1:16:39So that part actually intrigues me, Like it's it's accessible, you're guaranteed some
- 1:16:44hits, Like there's a lot to like there. But I look at the
- 1:16:46other side and the number of times like I have almost bought a mini card
- 1:16:51by mistake because you're like on eBay, and like they look the exact same
- 1:16:56because you just zoom in differently when they take it. I was looking the
- 1:16:59other day on a printing plate of of a PC player of mine, and
- 1:17:03I was like, man, I get two printing plates of his first Bowman
- 1:17:06for like seventy bucks each, So like, why don't I do this?
- 1:17:11I look like they're minis, Like I'm like, I didn't know we had
- 1:17:14printing plates of minis. Like no, not only their printing paids of plates
- 1:17:18of pain to store mini printing plates is even worse. And so I'm very
- 1:17:23torn by the product. I like it, I like the creativity with it,
- 1:17:26but probably not something we're all spend much time at all. Yeah,
- 1:17:30I agree, and it if it wasn't, honestly for the nineteen to seventy
- 1:17:33five design on the minis, I think they would be just not quite as
- 1:17:39fun. I do enjoy the like the fantastical albument of seeing some of the
- 1:17:43the rippings I've been seeing in some of the postings with like these little mini
- 1:17:47clown colored cards that people are holding because of the seventy five design. So
- 1:17:50I'm looking forward to seeing them in the wild, but certainly not something I'll
- 1:17:54be opening myself either. And then yeah, back to the rest of the
- 1:17:59release set. Obviously, we've got Bowman coming out on May eighth, We've
- 1:18:03got another new edition, and twenty twenty three is not dead, my friend.
- 1:18:08It is a zombie in the card cat in the card collecting world will
- 1:18:13never die. As we have twenty twenty three Tops Chrome Platinum Anniversary coming out
- 1:18:16on May twenty second, so that gives you a chance to get a Corbyn
- 1:18:20Carrol in that Platinum Anniversary chrome design. I think they they've been looking pretty
- 1:18:28slick that they when they originally started like this release a couple of years ago,
- 1:18:33I was a little down on the Platinum Anniversary chromes, but as I
- 1:18:39see more and more of them, they they're fun, like, they are
- 1:18:42cool cards, and I enjoy ripping like some of them when I get my
- 1:18:46hands on them. But also they make great PC editions just because they do
- 1:18:51add a little bit of like a different element you don't see too many throwback
- 1:18:56designs in chrome very much. Yeah, it's and I'm very love hate with
- 1:19:01with anniversary. I I'm not a big collector of Hall of Fame players on
- 1:19:08modern cards. There's just something about it to me, like I want their
- 1:19:12their cards. I want the cards from when they played, and I really
- 1:19:15struggle with it, and that the you know, Platinum Aniversary is very much
- 1:19:18a mixture of those of modern versus uh, you know, your players of
- 1:19:24yesteryear, and so that that does derive from me. I do like the
- 1:19:29design this year a lot better than what we've seen in the past, and
- 1:19:32so that that is exciting. You know. There is also the look I
- 1:19:38think there's the kind of the fake signatures on these ones again which we've talked
- 1:19:43about on the show, and just waiting for all these people trying to sell
- 1:19:46all these autographed cards, uh coming coming down the pipes. So yeah,
- 1:19:51I think it's a fun It's a fun one. It's not something I would
- 1:19:55probably be ripping or anything like that, but definitely something to keep an eye
- 1:19:59on because they are kind of fun. There's some really cool parallels as they
- 1:20:03go through with a lot of the toll cream white number of different wave refractors,
- 1:20:12the many diamond refractors, so there's some really cool I didn't even have
- 1:20:15a lava refractors, but I think those are pretty rare, very cool finishes
- 1:20:19on these cards, which we can do with chrome. So there's something to
- 1:20:23like there. But beyond that, I'm probably sticking away. Yeah, okay,
- 1:20:28And we also got Series two put on the calendar as that will be
- 1:20:34released on June twelfth, is currently the date. I'm looking right now that
- 1:20:42maybe they're also already kind of building in a little bit of a wiggle room,
- 1:20:45because if you remember the Easter parallels from series one, it's more of
- 1:20:50like a summer slash Fourth of July parallel theme with hot Dog, Statue of
- 1:20:56Liberty, umbrellas, suns, fireworks waves. But yeah, we will have
- 1:21:00Series two coming at us pretty soon, just a month and a half.
- 1:21:04Massive mist on tops summer Sausage parallels. They just didn't know it was coming.
- 1:21:12Yeah, maybe they gotta get back to the printing presses get those out
- 1:21:15there, just maybe maybe only on Twins cards, like what they did with
- 1:21:17the Kevin Hart on the Phillies cards. They just put like the summer Sausage
- 1:21:21on twins cards special SSP Summer Sausage. Yeah, SSPs Summer sausage super short
- 1:21:30for it parallels. Oh geez, Okay, you're buying. Okay, B
- 1:21:35guy might have to go second, you're buying you get me over here?
- 1:21:38Yeah, okay, all right, Well with that, we will take a
- 1:21:42short break and we'll be back to discuss twenty twenty four Bowmen after that.
- 1:21:46Stick around, hello and welcome back as we get into an overview of twenty
- 1:22:08twenty four Bowmen paper. So this is a I mean, it's not technically
- 1:22:15a flagship product, but I consider it kind of a tent pole flagship product
- 1:22:18for tops. Overall is Bowman goes back to the nineteen fifties and especially has
- 1:22:24been known for its prospects and inclusion of those prospects as their up and coming.
- 1:22:30But this year, again obviously we have the base one hundred card check
- 1:22:34list before we get into those prospect inserts. Again, a pretty standard,
- 1:22:41I would say design for Bowman this year. If anything, it's kind of
- 1:22:45classic. It almost like hearkens back to like twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen ish
- 1:22:50Bowman's And this is actually I think one of the first designs has come out
- 1:22:55in some of these newer releases that I'm on board with. I approve of
- 1:22:59this design for twenty twenty four Bowmen. It feels like Bowman to me,
- 1:23:02and I'm looking forward to finding it. It should be wherever you find baseball
- 1:23:06cards because that it is released a lot like the top splagship products, you
- 1:23:12know, Series one, Series two update, where Bowman should be on shelves
- 1:23:15and all your retail stores, you know, Target, Walmart, Myers,
- 1:23:20but also you'll have all your hobby versions at your hobby stores. So you've
- 1:23:25got all sorts of choices between fat packs, loose retail packs, retail boxes,
- 1:23:30blaster boxes, megaboxes, hobby boxes, hobby jumbo boxes, so you've
- 1:23:39got lots of different ways to approach ripping Bowman. And I know this is
- 1:23:44a favorite of yours every year, brew So what are you going to do
- 1:23:46this year in terms of how you're going to approach opening some of this product?
- 1:23:50Yeah, I think I'm I'm going to probably look more retail, see
- 1:23:57what I can do, maybe more of the blaster of things. The price
- 1:24:00point, it's it's up there, Bowman. It's I feel like it's actually
- 1:24:04down from last year or so but that's not sane much when you're talking about
- 1:24:10five hundred bucks for a jumbo. So I do to your point. I
- 1:24:14think the design it's kind of like a twenty eighteen twenty nineteen mash up to
- 1:24:16a degree, like with some of those MYOCD loves the clear you know corners
- 1:24:26here, like these cards, like if they're not centered, it's gonna be
- 1:24:29so obvious that the way that they've got these designed. But I do really
- 1:24:33like that. But yeah, I'll probably be looking more to just to rip
- 1:24:36a few, just because I think the design is really cool. Really,
- 1:24:40whatever I can get my hands on first is probably the approach, especially with
- 1:24:43Bowman Bowen first, especially with your big names, Like I remember when we
- 1:24:48had Ellie. Ellie came out and when you got his Bowman and you're able
- 1:24:53to rip those like those cards were more valuable the day after you ripped than
- 1:24:57they are when he got called up or he's doing what he's doing now,
- 1:25:00right, and so the prospecting value is so significant right when these cards come
- 1:25:06out, and then it does peter off pretty quickly. So I think some
- 1:25:10of the big names here will be fun to go searching for. Yeah,
- 1:25:14and I also leave in the show notes, I found a nice little checklist
- 1:25:17of all of the Bowmen first that are in twenty twenty four Bowmen here,
- 1:25:20Because if you recall our preview of twenty twenty three Bowman Draft in the Fall,
- 1:25:27the way that the draft product works is that the number one overall pick
- 1:25:30from that draft is always in the subsequent draft product, as well as a
- 1:25:35good smattering of those other picks, but the second round or the number two
- 1:25:41overall pick is always in the subsequent Bowman set. So for twenty twenty four,
- 1:25:45that means the Bowman first for Dylan Cruz is included in all these sets,
- 1:25:50which obviously is driving those prices a little bit. But like you said,
- 1:25:55I think we also covered this when the pre orders for Bowman came out
- 1:25:58that it was absurd that two hundred and sixty dollars for a hobby box that
- 1:26:02only guarantees you one hit one autograph. And once you see like the Bowman
- 1:26:10checklist for autographs, it's a pretty standard Bowman checklist because you have obviously like
- 1:26:15the dudes like Dylan Cruz and Yoshinoba Yamamoto and other hot rookies, but you've
- 1:26:21also got depth arms like just guys who are never gonna sniff the major leagues
- 1:26:28because it is a prospect heavy product. So you've got a lot of those
- 1:26:31types of really fringe guys who are never even gonna maybe even make it past
- 1:26:36like High A or Double A included in this product. So it's really tough
- 1:26:41to swallow if you're buying a two or sixty dollars hobby box with one hit
- 1:26:45and you're getting one of those really fringe relief arms jumbo boxes if you want
- 1:26:48three hits are five hundred bucks on the pre order. So we'll see where
- 1:26:53they settle next week when the product releases in terms of the secondary market,
- 1:26:58but you've got to think that people are gonna be looking to recoup some of
- 1:27:00that money. So I think the prices are going to settle right around the
- 1:27:03pre order because that's the way most products have been working as as a plate,
- 1:27:08Yeah, I think so. I think this this is going to be
- 1:27:10really a breaker's Delight and type products not to confuse with I think they actually
- 1:27:13name some things breakers Delight, But I think this really is going to be
- 1:27:17one of those products that if you want to get into it, really go
- 1:27:19after your favorite players or think something like that. That's probably the way to
- 1:27:24go if you're looking for a certain guy, especially for a lot of collectors
- 1:27:30there that like see that the first draft pick of their team, like from
- 1:27:32that first rounder, and they want to go after that guy. You're probably
- 1:27:36best off going after some breaks and things like that to keep your keep it
- 1:27:41reasonable, because you know you can bowm in especially get them some massive breaks
- 1:27:45like I have seen where they're breaking like fifty cases of players and you can
- 1:27:51buy one player for fifty cases and to your point like it. You know
- 1:27:55that's painful. But when you're going through cases and especially jumbos, now you're
- 1:28:00talking hundreds of autographs, like you got a much better chance at going after
- 1:28:05something. Get a little bit that rainbow started. There's just a few different
- 1:28:10variations this year, so well, there's there's definitely some some guys like for
- 1:28:15you, who's is cru Is Dylan Cruz the the guy in this one?
- 1:28:20Is there anybody else that really has you excited from a prospect perspective? Yeah,
- 1:28:26I mean Walker Jenksins is also going to be in this product with his
- 1:28:29first card in terms of both the base paper, the chrome and then all
- 1:28:33the parallels and autographs and everything like that. So I think lots of people
- 1:28:38are really excited for Walker Jenkins because there's lots of prospectors out there that are
- 1:28:42real big into high schoolers especially. I mean, it's a very risky pool
- 1:28:46to play in. But for me, far and away, Dylan Cruz is
- 1:28:49the guy that you're looking to get. And his card also looks kind of
- 1:28:54goofy. He's got like his little goofy mustache on it, and they did
- 1:28:58do a pretty good photo shot job with it too, so like compared to
- 1:29:01some of the other ones that you sometimes see in the Bowman Prospects products,
- 1:29:06like, it's a it's a believable photo shop. So yeah, don't look
- 1:29:11at the George Lane Lombard like it's it's like like somebody drew the jersey on
- 1:29:17it is just this is bad. Yeah, it reminds me of you know,
- 1:29:20those like like those sticker books with like the the clothing like where you
- 1:29:26like, that's what it looks like. It The Lombard card is really really
- 1:29:30tough. But yeah, you've also got lots of other prospects from last year's
- 1:29:34draft. In terms of Brock Wilcan from the Milwaukee Brewers, You've got Aiden
- 1:29:39Miller from the Phillies. I'm really high on this guy, actually, uh,
- 1:29:43And I want to get your opinion on him, because I can't tell
- 1:29:45if like I'm just too high on him. It's our June Nimala. I
- 1:29:49think it's how you pronounce it. For the Toronto Blue Jays. They picked
- 1:29:54him last year as a shortstop in the draft and he was only seventeen when
- 1:29:58he was in the draft. He is of Indian like descent, and so
- 1:30:02I think he'd be like one of the first players in the league that comes
- 1:30:06from that background. And he just looks like a peer athlete that like it's
- 1:30:12a type of guy where the skills are so raw you don't know where the
- 1:30:16ceiling or where the floor is. But I've been starting to really enjoy like
- 1:30:21all the scatting reports that I've seen on Nimala. What do you know much
- 1:30:26about him and what's your opinion of him? Yeah, I don't know much
- 1:30:30about him. He's one of those that it's the guy you're trying to project,
- 1:30:33you know. I've seen reports that say he's you know, he's one
- 1:30:39of those guys that in one or two years it's gonna be a top one
- 1:30:43hundred prospect. It's just like he's got to fill out, like he's gotta
- 1:30:46still he's a high school age like he's a high school guy, but he's
- 1:30:50just really really projectable with just tons of tools. And so I think that's
- 1:30:56that's what you have to like about the guys. But that's also what blakes
- 1:30:59Bowman so interesting is this guy is so far away from the majors and it's
- 1:31:03gonna take you three four years for him to really make that impact. But
- 1:31:10you can go after him and then or forget about him and go back a
- 1:31:15few years later and you have something really exciting. So he's one of those
- 1:31:19guys that it is fun because of the hide product. Yeah, and then
- 1:31:24you've also got Kyle Teel from last year's draft with his first All these guys
- 1:31:29I've been listening, it's all there first, so it's kind of like their
- 1:31:32rookie card that you're going to be chasing. And then on top of that,
- 1:31:35you've also got real rookies in terms of this is the first kind of
- 1:31:40non strange parallel set with a Yoshinobu Yamamoto card, So I think that's gonna
- 1:31:45be a pretty big collector's item. Same thing with John cole Lee from San
- 1:31:49Francisco, first rookie card there and with we were just talking about earlier.
- 1:31:56Pete Crow, Armstrong PCA and Jordan Lawler also have keys in the one hundred
- 1:32:01card Bowman set, So lots of really fun players that are also going to
- 1:32:08because of that. This is again Bowman's pretty much like this every year.
- 1:32:14Now is that like once you get your hands on some too, you've got
- 1:32:16to open it and get your money out of it within the next like two
- 1:32:21weeks in terms of getting it up on eBay. While some of these first
- 1:32:26and rookie cards have a little bit of value in the secondary market because we
- 1:32:30haven't gotten the production stats yet. I've checked, we're kind of a week
- 1:32:33early that hopefully we can discuss it next week that our favorite Twitter account tops
- 1:32:40Production BB will have those stats. But you have to imagine that this is
- 1:32:43a pretty heavily printed set as once again, I mean, it's just your
- 1:32:47classic kind of Bowman paper where it is a little flimsier than your standard flagship.
- 1:32:51So yeah, what are you doing with maybe some of these other rookie
- 1:32:58cards and anyone else that you might be ac about. We haven't talked about
- 1:33:00Broup. Yeah, I mean the guys you mentioned the one that really there's
- 1:33:04two this step to jump out to me Kyle Teal. I'm really excited about
- 1:33:08Kyle Teal out of Boston. I think he's it was a fast moving catcher.
- 1:33:12He's already at double A and he's also one of those ones that is
- 1:33:15the market he goes into. From a card perspective, going to Boston,
- 1:33:19I think they're begging for the catcher to make make an impact there. Since
- 1:33:26Jason Vertek, you haven't had like somebody that has locked that down, and
- 1:33:30so I think they're they're begging for a lot there. The other thing is
- 1:33:33really interesting you mentioned Yamamoto, Like this Bowman's become kind of like that first
- 1:33:39rookie card for big Japanese guys like show Hey Otani that like that that rookie
- 1:33:45card is is like it croaches and encroaches on his actual rookie card up paper
- 1:33:51to paper version. And I think Yamamoto is gonna get as well because it's
- 1:33:55like the first official rookie card uh in the US. And so I think
- 1:34:01that that that's gonna be a kind of a sneaky value there that you know,
- 1:34:05people won't really think that through and then over time that's the value that's
- 1:34:10gonna climb. And so I'm definitely looking like young Moto Lee, you know,
- 1:34:15guys like that. Definitely, any parallels I think are really gonna be
- 1:34:19very, very hot or early on. So I think you hit all the
- 1:34:23right guys here. It's it's just an interesting balance of ripping this product of
- 1:34:27do you sell, do you hold, do you what do you do with
- 1:34:30these because some of these guys can take years and years to become relevant,
- 1:34:33and these are the guys that out of nowhere become relevant and others don't.
- 1:34:38But I do think it does come down to the print run. I think
- 1:34:40that's gonna be a huge factor here. Last year or so, the print
- 1:34:44run has been so massive on this it's really watered down the value of those
- 1:34:46those first first moment. Yeah, and you make a really good point with
- 1:34:50that Yamamoto rookie card that I forgot about that, you know, it's kind
- 1:34:54of like his first true rookie outside of Big League. But like the factor
- 1:35:01with that too is that I think Beckett technically considers this, and so there
- 1:35:05are lots of other collectors in the market that consider this is that like even
- 1:35:10the prospect cards, if that player gets called up in that year, that
- 1:35:15is technically their rookie card quote unquote, So it makes it a little bit
- 1:35:17extra valuable that those are maybe like the one type of card that you can
- 1:35:24hold just to see throughout the rest of the year. Like who gets called
- 1:35:28up? Is these Bowman prospect cards for the guys who don't have their first
- 1:35:33So a part of the Bowman Prospects list is you'll have the guys with their
- 1:35:38first in there, but then the rest in that checklist, it's just a
- 1:35:44unlabeled kind of card of that prospect. So for example, Jackson Holliday has
- 1:35:48one and it's not a first, it's just a Bowman paper a part of
- 1:35:53the Bowman Prospects set. So there, I know, like the Wan Soto
- 1:35:58card when Wan Soto debuted, like that one holds a little bit extra value
- 1:36:00in the kunas and stuff, and it has traditionally happened, but it is
- 1:36:04like a little bit of like a little boost to those value in cards,
- 1:36:09especially if those players end up turning into big stars. Is that that Bowman
- 1:36:15paper Bowman chrome from that prospect set in the year that they debuted becomes like
- 1:36:19another pseudo Rookie card. And one more point I want to make on like
- 1:36:26Theylmotos, there's autos here, like we're talking Chrome Rookie autos and like so
- 1:36:30that just jumps through the roof of some of the guys that you know,
- 1:36:33PCA's on there, Lailer, you know, Kurstad, Ellie, Colton,
- 1:36:40Kowser, you know Ces. There's a number of guys here that really are
- 1:36:46going to make an impact. And there is a Chrome Rookie Autographs Samurai Japan
- 1:36:55variation yam Moto autograph. I don't know what that looks like. I haven't
- 1:37:00seen it yet, but on the checklist, and so I have got to
- 1:37:02think something like that. It's it's almost like they're trying to go back to
- 1:37:05you know, when they had the uh Otani Sanskrit you know auto. It's
- 1:37:12like they're trying to create something really exciting here for young Moto that's just gonna
- 1:37:17just gonna go go crazy. So there's some there's some cool chases here.
- 1:37:23Yeah, And I mean the biggest the product chase here is the Ultimate Autograph
- 1:37:28Book card, which let me one, two, three, four, I'm
- 1:37:32I'm not even going to try to count. It's got to be like,
- 1:37:35what like twenty four autos of the hottest prospects all in one booklet. So
- 1:37:40that's the big hit that we're all looking for in this product. On top
- 1:37:45of it, though, like the autograph checklist, not only does it have
- 1:37:48the Jyl and Cruise, the Young Motos, the Brock Wilkins or anybody else
- 1:37:51that we've kind of talked about. Walker Jenkins is going to be huge.
- 1:37:56This is actually a really great checklist, I think for the top one hundreds
- 1:38:00Scouts Top one hundred autographs checklists. So that is one of the standard inserts
- 1:38:05on Bowman every year is that there is the top one hundred of the top
- 1:38:12one hundred prospects, and just given where prospects are this year, I feel
- 1:38:16like it's a really great list because I mean, obviously, just in the
- 1:38:20top five, we're looking already at Jackson Holliday, Jackson Curio, Paul Skenes,
- 1:38:25Dylan Cruz, Ethan Sallis. I mean, six is James Woods,
- 1:38:29seven is Jackson, Merrill, Wyatt Langford's on this checklist. So there's a
- 1:38:33lot of great autographs that are buried in this product. I mean that is
- 1:38:36driving the price a little bit, but hitting some of these upper echelon dames
- 1:38:41is a total like shot in the dark. So I've never like even come
- 1:38:47close to hitting one of them. That usually I'm getting the samad tailors and
- 1:38:51other kind of backup pictures of the world. So that is a consideration,
- 1:38:56like as you're going out and scoping any it breaks you might want to be
- 1:39:00entering, or any of the hobby products you might want to be picking up.
- 1:39:05Is that it is a pretty good autographs checklist. It's just very extensive
- 1:39:12from top to bottom in terms of prospects and first as well. So I
- 1:39:16know we've talked a lot about the players, but we have to hit one
- 1:39:20of your favorite things about this and I'm gonna let you do the honors today,
- 1:39:25drink. I want to run us. You gotta run us through the
- 1:39:29parallels for this set, because it is incredible the number of parallels that we're
- 1:39:34talking here, which goes back to the print run conversation. I think it's
- 1:39:38gonna tell us something. But take us through, take us through what we're
- 1:39:42looking at here from a parallel perspective, and I think I got them all.
- 1:39:45I don't know. I'm trying to compare them on the checklist from Beckett
- 1:39:49to tops ripped. And also keeping in mind in series one, like I
- 1:39:56think we ran through the list of all the parallel and then subsequently, for
- 1:40:01like two or three more weeks kept adding more parallels. So by no means
- 1:40:05is this exhaustive, as I'm sure that there will be other parallels that come
- 1:40:09out, but all right, here we go. So in terms of your
- 1:40:14paper parallels, so that's both your base one hundred card player checklists as well
- 1:40:20as off your prospect they have sky blue to forty ninety nine, neon green
- 1:40:26to three three ninety nine fushia to two ninety nine purple to two fifty purple
- 1:40:30pattern to one ninety nine pink to one seventy five blue to one fifty blue
- 1:40:36pattern to one twenty five yellow to seventy five gold to fifty orange to twenty
- 1:40:44five that's a hobby only black to fifteen. Also hobby only red to five
- 1:40:49platinum, one of one's printing plates, one of one on the chrome side,
- 1:40:56it's there's so many, this is so many, and so this is
- 1:41:00only going to be on your Prospect cards because only the Prospect cards on the
- 1:41:04set have the chrome parallels, and here we go. You got many diamond
- 1:41:10refractor parallels unnumbered Lunar Glow which are back unnumbered Basic Refractor four ninety nine,
- 1:41:17Lava Refractor three ninety nine, Speckle Refractor two ninety nine, Purple Refractor two
- 1:41:24fifty, Purple ray Wave two fifty Future Refractor one ninety nine, Fushaw Lunar
- 1:41:30Refractor one ninety nine, Blue Refractor one fifty Blue Shimmer one fifty Blue ray
- 1:41:36Wave one fifty Hobby Exclusive Aqua Lunar one twenty five, Aqua Shimer one twenty
- 1:41:44five, Green Grass ninety nine, Yellow seventy five Yellow Lunar seventy five Gold
- 1:41:51fifty Gold Shimmer of fifty, Orange Refractor of twenty five, Hobby Exclusive again,
- 1:41:58Orange Shimmer twenty five, Hobby Exclusive again Black to ten of yeah of
- 1:42:04ten. That was not Hobby Exclusive, just new. Sorry I was,
- 1:42:06I got excited about the Hobby Exclusive there rose gold to ten Rose gold,
- 1:42:12Mini Diamond to ten, Red, Lava to five, red, regular to
- 1:42:15five superfractor one of one printing plate one of one's. I feel like every
- 1:42:24time we do this, we talk about them jumping the shark, but holy
- 1:42:27cow, dude, that's basically fifty. I did the rough math, aka
- 1:42:32I counted, and there's roughly fifty perils. And I get there's difference between
- 1:42:38like your paper and your chromes and stuff, but there's fifty. Like good
- 1:42:43luck going after the rainbow and just the chrome. I think you're like,
- 1:42:45yeah, thirty one. And when we're not talking to different versions of printing
- 1:42:50plates and things like that, you know, it's it's get a little funny
- 1:42:55right when you talk you went through it's like blue refractors out of one fifty
- 1:43:00blue shimmer refractors on the one fifty raight wave blue refractions one fifty, Like
- 1:43:03exactly, there's that's four hundred and fifty blue refractors here, and I,
- 1:43:10for life, I can't tell the difference sometimes when I get these and so
- 1:43:14like it is an interesting way that like you know, it wasn't late nineties.
- 1:43:17It was like a numbered card. It doesn't matter what number like there
- 1:43:20was like it was generally like three parallels. You might get like you might
- 1:43:27have like an atomic out of one hundred and something on a four hundred,
- 1:43:30and that was it. Like there was five hundred numbered cards in like a
- 1:43:32set. Yeah, like total and now we're talking about literally thousands of numbered
- 1:43:38cards and we're using the same number over like like I we're watering it down
- 1:43:45to the point here. I mean, it's still fun, it's still still
- 1:43:46gets the chance to get things, but like the what used to be the
- 1:43:50chase of a rainbow, which is kind of cut cool, like I can
- 1:43:54get all nine different variations of a card of a guy like no, you
- 1:43:57can't, good luck no, And I mean, I don't think it's also
- 1:44:01a coincidence that the three big prospect or three of the big prospect names here
- 1:44:09are all got blue color parallel matches in terms of cruise, Jenkins and Wilkin,
- 1:44:15that they will all look good in that blue that it does feel a
- 1:44:19little pandering, especially that they took that blue and blew it out to three
- 1:44:26different parallels when all, I mean it happens a couple of other spots,
- 1:44:30you know, with like purple and orange and gold where you've got the two,
- 1:44:36but yeah, to have that third blue parallel, I think it really
- 1:44:42just kind of pushes the start more so into like a clown territory than it
- 1:44:47has been before, where it's felt ridiculous. But like, yeah, when
- 1:44:50it's going a little crazy like that, and like you said, you have
- 1:44:55four hundred and fifty different blue parallels that it really kind of takes the the
- 1:45:00specialness of having just one of those blues. Well, here's a point where
- 1:45:04you start playing my guy card here, I start going, well, what's
- 1:45:06the difference between purple and fusia? Like are these just different versions of purple?
- 1:45:12Like did one just come out of the printer a little hot? And
- 1:45:15we just say, well, it's not really purple, let's just name it
- 1:45:16fusia. Right, you're getting you're getting a little little uh little technical here
- 1:45:21for for for my liking, uh as we get through, because that's that's
- 1:45:26always one of the fun things I think with some of these sets, is
- 1:45:29you get these uh. I've sold some cards. I think Chrome Platinum has
- 1:45:32the same issue where there's like a true red and then like like a red
- 1:45:36wave like and some of them and and people are like, is this the
- 1:45:40red or is this the fuchsia? And I'm like, I don't know,
- 1:45:43it looks red to me. And they're like, well, the fusia is
- 1:45:45really hard to find and it's you know, hobby only, and I'm like,
- 1:45:48not a clue, don't know what I got, is there a decoder
- 1:45:53ring? Uh for for for this product? Yeah, to be able to
- 1:45:56line up. I think what I also don't like is that like you have
- 1:46:00all of the different colors in different patterns, and like it's just so random,
- 1:46:05you know what I mean. There's not like a there's not some sort
- 1:46:10of sense of just it being structured that you know, you've got random lunars,
- 1:46:17random ray waves, random speckles, and it just like it doesn't make
- 1:46:24any rhyme or reason put it together. That I'd like to see some sort
- 1:46:29of through line that was more thought out, where you get the shimmer in
- 1:46:33the hobby, the retail, Yeah, and just bass like in everything,
- 1:46:39it's like different versions of shimmers. I feel like there should all be hobby
- 1:46:43or all the retail like it lots. I would prefer too of just like
- 1:46:47regular refractors, but in all the different patterns and maybe taking away the colors,
- 1:46:51like just something that like I know that they're trying to have fun with
- 1:46:57all these different refractor kind of variations that they can print, but like it
- 1:47:01did feel like a couple of years ago, you know, one set would
- 1:47:04have all waves, one set would have all diamonds, one set would have
- 1:47:09all ray waves and so there was consistency throughout the product, as opposed to
- 1:47:14this just feels like a printing press, like barfed all over a bunch of
- 1:47:17color foil. I was waiting for you to say one set would have all
- 1:47:20tacos, which is not a joke. Sadly, Yeah, this is a
- 1:47:29Yeah, this has become like I think part of this too is like we're
- 1:47:32just also getting old and like the world's starting to pass this by little by
- 1:47:36little, and you get to hear that this podcasts set very very honest truth.
- 1:47:44Yeah. Okay, well, let's get a little bit into the inserts
- 1:47:46before we wrap up Bowman here for twenty twenty four, just because we touched
- 1:47:51on it a little bit with the Scout inserts, which are always a part
- 1:47:57of the Bowman set. I know that you like to put that set together
- 1:48:00a lot every year, that you're gonna be doing that again this year.
- 1:48:03Yeah, that's a good chance I will. It's one of those that like,
- 1:48:06I don't, I don't plan to do it, and then I get
- 1:48:09a few of them and I'm like, well I've already started, I'm as
- 1:48:13well finish it. So you know, it definitely one of the things I
- 1:48:16like to put together. I didn't actually accomplish it last year. I got
- 1:48:20halfway through and then just ran out of steam. But there's a good chance
- 1:48:25that this is one because it is fun to build, because I always like
- 1:48:28to go back and you know, three or four years later, it's like,
- 1:48:30hey, this guy's hit it big, Like I know I've got his
- 1:48:32card. I know I've got it somewhere because I got the whole set,
- 1:48:34and so that's just kind of fun. And then the whole internal debate of
- 1:48:39do I break up my set to take that card out and look at it
- 1:48:43or something like that, But those are personal problems. So yeah, And
- 1:48:46I mean, it is an impressive looking set. To get all one hundred
- 1:48:49of them together, and if they're in like a binder or something, it's
- 1:48:51it's fun. And to be able to like go back through the old Bowman
- 1:48:56sets and see what the top one hundred prospects looked like every year. It's
- 1:48:59just kind of like a cool arc of baseball history. To put it all
- 1:49:01together, it is it's fun, and like, because it's only one hundred
- 1:49:04cards, it is pretty well defined and it's not hard. They're numbered on
- 1:49:10the front so like it's it's it's easy to see. It's like I just
- 1:49:14need fifty seven. Just give me fifty seven, I'll finish my set.
- 1:49:15Like and generally they're not they're not really highly sought after, but they're usually
- 1:49:23fun cards. Yeah, and then we've also got the Spotlights coming back this
- 1:49:28year, so that was an extremely popular insert last year and I really like
- 1:49:31it. But we'll see kind of what the design looks like this year.
- 1:49:34I haven't really seen any pictures of it yet, but last year's design was
- 1:49:40it was just a cutout of the player in their batting stance than like a
- 1:49:44back background that looked like they were on a lit stage. I think those
- 1:49:46will be extremely popular again this year, especially given that one of them is
- 1:49:50the Eli Rookie cards, so I think that's gonna be a hot commodity,
- 1:49:54along with the Jason Dominguez pca Evan Carter Rookie cards and as well. And
- 1:50:01we've also got Retrofractors back, which hasn't been very hyped because of everything else
- 1:50:06going on with Dylan Cruz and everything. But last year we had Roberto Clemente
- 1:50:12and Babe Ruth and that was in Bowman chrome. This year in regular Bowman,
- 1:50:17we've got Pete Rose of fifty Chrome Retrofractor and Bob Gibson of fifty Chrome
- 1:50:24Retrofractor, so those will be pretty big chase cards as well. And then
- 1:50:28here's where I think we're gonna start getting into a little bit of fun.
- 1:50:30Actually, these insert designs I've seen for a couple of these other sets have
- 1:50:35been I think really fun, mostly because they harken a lot back to the
- 1:50:39nineties in terms of just like some of the goofy designs used to get on
- 1:50:44Fleer especially. I felt like Fleer did a really great job of kind of
- 1:50:47mixing like a cartoonish element to a bunch of their insert designs. And that's
- 1:50:54what we're picking up here in Bowman this year as the Gladiators of the Diamond.
- 1:50:58Insert checklist will include pictures of the players like in the Colisseum like the
- 1:51:04Gladiator Colisseum from Rome with the motif. It looks pretty cool. You've got
- 1:51:10Prospect power up cards which are the player inside like a pinball machine, which
- 1:51:16I think looks kind of cool. It's a little gimmicky, but it's fun.
- 1:51:19And then my favorite of these is the Rising Infernos it's just like the
- 1:51:25player surrounded in a bunch of fire. It just really reminds me, especially
- 1:51:30of the inserts from the Basketball like Fleer sets back in the nineties, and
- 1:51:35they're just, oh man, they're just tacky and glorious in terms of like
- 1:51:41the fire usage on there. But then I think this will probably end up
- 1:51:45being the most popular inserts set, at least from what I've been seeing in
- 1:51:49terms of chatter on Reddit and Twitter. And that's the nineteen fifty five Bowman
- 1:51:54anime checklist, especially given that you have Otani and Yoshida included in that.
- 1:52:00That what it is is the nineteen fifty five Bowman design. It was like
- 1:52:04watching it on a nineteen fifties like TV set, and then they're taking these
- 1:52:10cards by drawing the players in anime fashion. So I think these are going
- 1:52:15to be hits, especially like I said, the Otani card is going to
- 1:52:17be I think a pretty big collector's piece out of that set. So,
- 1:52:23Bro, what about you, any of these insert sets really peaking your interest
- 1:52:26this year? Yeah, so maybe maybe you mentioned it, maybe I just
- 1:52:30missed it, but the AI checklist did I skipped over that, But you
- 1:52:33just got the opportunity to talk about it. Yeah, I'm I'm very torn
- 1:52:39on this because I I've I've seen one card from it, and really,
- 1:52:44so what the those twenty cards all big name prospects from Elie to Hinterry,
- 1:52:49Davis to Holiday to Jones? Would you know all those guys? And really
- 1:52:56it's supposed to be a set where the they use the Advanced Player Stats two
- 1:53:03be then AI system to say what came out of it, and they basically
- 1:53:09a I built the card and the one, the one I'm I'm looking at
- 1:53:13is you know, it's it's questionable, Like I said, what what what
- 1:53:17are we looking at? So that that's that's just interesting. I've just not
- 1:53:21seen enough examples to know what's going to come out of that. It could
- 1:53:25be really really cool. It could be we we missed the mark. The
- 1:53:29the other one that you know, it's kind of interest, like the in
- 1:53:33Bloom cards. Yeah, also and those ones I just don't get. It's
- 1:53:39like the one I'm looking at Max Clark in a flower pot. So I'm
- 1:53:45sitting here going, uh this, I just know I just can't buy that.
- 1:53:49So I'm it's it's gonna be interesting. I do personally love the Spotlight
- 1:53:54cards. I to me, they they look like they should be from maybe
- 1:53:58like a Penie set, where they should be like a case hit, and
- 1:54:00they're not, but they have that feel of it. So I think there's
- 1:54:02some really cool cool things here, and I do like the fact that they
- 1:54:06also have the hidden Gyms. Hidden Gyms is a ultrarare set that I can't
- 1:54:15remember the print run of them, but they're very very hard to find,
- 1:54:18and so if you're trying to go through all the inserts, hidden Gyms is
- 1:54:23a very tough tough poll for the hobby and I don't I haven't seen the
- 1:54:30print runs on those or the odds on those. So lots of fun stuff,
- 1:54:33lots of fun inserts, yeah, exactly. And none of us mentioned
- 1:54:38the Rookie of the Year Favorite insert because honestly, it might be my most
- 1:54:43hated insert set of the year. I think it's just weird rookie cards and
- 1:54:47they look so dumb, especially considering one of them is Ronnie Mauricio, because
- 1:54:54definitely not a Rookie of the your favorite or just like it always seems to
- 1:54:58fall apart like that, or like I've I've been working actually on the rainbow
- 1:55:00of that for Gavin Sheets, because like some of the guys that get included
- 1:55:04in this Rookie of the Year Favorites checklist in retrospect end up being quite hilarious.
- 1:55:10In Gavin Sheets is certainly amongst that. Yeah, it feels like it
- 1:55:15should be a really good set, but it's just not. Yeah, all
- 1:55:18right, Well, I think that gives a great overview of twenty twenty four
- 1:55:23Bowman. I will in the show notes have lots of links to the things
- 1:55:28that we've discussed in terms of the checklists and being able to see some of
- 1:55:31the designs of these cards so that you don't have to rely on this audio
- 1:55:36format to try and envision what the cards look like. Especially Yeah, I
- 1:55:41want you to check out those Infernal cards because the only one is pretty fantastic.
- 1:55:45I think it's gonna be quite the collector's item. So with that,
- 1:55:49let's wrap it up this Brew, wrap it up this week Brew. As
