- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear smokew S Barbacue.
- 0:02Speaker 2: It is the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show, our first of
- 0:04Speaker 2: the year, as we preview the twenty five, twenty sixth
- 0:07Speaker 2: edition of the Ice Bus. It starts this weekend at
- 0:10Speaker 2: Colorado College and they'll take a week off and then
- 0:12Speaker 2: the home opener is on October seventeenth against the Buckeyes
- 0:16Speaker 2: of the Ohio State University Friday game and stores Saturday
- 0:19Speaker 2: game at the Excel. We're hoping, let's go Red Sox
- 0:23Speaker 2: that our first radio broadcast for hockey is October seventeenth,
- 0:26Speaker 2: because as long as the Yankees go, that makes life.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Tough for us, so let's eliminate them exactly. And that
- 0:32Speaker 1: starts tomorrow night.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Speaking of which, the Football Show will be six five
- 0:35Speaker 2: to six tomorrow night on the network, So if you'd
- 0:38Speaker 2: like to listen to the Football Show before Yankees Red Sox,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you get that chance.
- 0:41Speaker 1: To do that, all right.
- 0:43Speaker 2: A lot of familiar faces, obviously, the offensive weaponry is
- 0:48Speaker 2: there from last year, led by Joey muldonne, Jake Richard
- 0:51Speaker 2: and Ryan Taddle, but there's also a lot of new
- 0:54Speaker 2: faces and some new rules that were in a place
- 0:57Speaker 2: we talked about last year, like the major junior hockey
- 0:59Speaker 2: leagues in Canada now our fair game for college. You
- 1:02Speaker 2: have a couple of those you did not hit the
- 1:04Speaker 2: portal this year, now, Now, was that part of it
- 1:07Speaker 2: because of roster size and the fact that you got
- 1:09Speaker 2: the kids from the major junior you know, a couple
- 1:11Speaker 2: of the junior hockey leagues the major leagues that you
- 1:13Speaker 2: got or is that just just didn't work out this year.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think the portal is our first choice
- 1:21Speaker 3: in bringing players into the you know program. I think
- 1:27Speaker 3: it's certainly I'm not Dabo Sweeney where I'm gonna say
- 1:31Speaker 3: we're never going to take a transfer, yep. But if
- 1:34Speaker 3: it's the right one and it's the right fit, maybe
- 1:36Speaker 3: we'll take it. I think the majority of the transfers
- 1:39Speaker 3: we have taken over the last few years were more
- 1:43Speaker 3: COVID kids, you know, whether it was you know, Tai
- 1:48Speaker 3: Amanti or Kevin O'Neill or Justin Pearson or Nick Carabin.
- 1:52Speaker 3: There were all kids that you know, graduated from school
- 1:56Speaker 3: Darien Hansen and they wanted to play one more year,
- 2:00Speaker 3: so they had already graduated from the university they were at.
- 2:03Speaker 3: They weren't allowed to go back to those universities of
- 2:07Speaker 3: most of them IVY leagues because they graduate. There's no
- 2:11Speaker 3: fifth year in the IVY leagues. So it worked out great.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I think I'm not saying I would never do it,
- 2:18Speaker 3: but I think you've got to be very, very careful
- 2:20Speaker 3: when you're looking at an undergraduate transfer, because why do
- 2:24Speaker 3: they want to leave? You know, if a coach leaves,
- 2:27Speaker 3: that's a different story. Like Viking, we took as a transfer,
- 2:30Speaker 3: but his coach left. You know, he was coaching the
- 2:33Speaker 3: Hartford Wolfpack now, so the guy that recruited him wasn't there.
- 2:36Speaker 3: So I think that made sense. But if it's a
- 2:39Speaker 3: situation where a guy's not happy with his playing time
- 2:42Speaker 3: at school X, you know a lot of times I
- 2:46Speaker 3: think that's just going to become my problem after that. Yes, right, Really,
- 2:50Speaker 3: I think you really have to do your homework on
- 2:52Speaker 3: in college hockey. I think you really have to do
- 2:55Speaker 3: your homework on undergraduate transfers.
- 2:57Speaker 4: When looking at the returning talent Rishard, Joey Muldowney, two
- 3:02Speaker 4: really incredible forwards, and the missing Lincoln there is Hudson
- 3:05Speaker 4: schandor how do you go about positioning a third person
- 3:10Speaker 4: between those or maybe even exploring the offense. The option
- 3:13Speaker 4: of breaking those two up, which based on their friendship,
- 3:16Speaker 4: doesn't really seem like an option.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Well, it has nothing to do with their friendship. I
- 3:19Speaker 3: don't really care about that. It's there. The way they
- 3:22Speaker 3: work together on the ice, it's more important. So and
- 3:27Speaker 3: they have great chemistry on the ice, so that's one
- 3:29Speaker 3: of the reasons why they're together. But you don't replace
- 3:33Speaker 3: Hudson Chandor as a player. Maybe, you know, we ken
- 3:36Speaker 3: Hudson was certainly good player, but there's a lot of
- 3:39Speaker 3: good players. I don't think we replace his leadership and
- 3:43Speaker 3: what he brought to this program. That's just and that's okay,
- 3:48Speaker 3: because you know we can I don't want Tabor. He
- 3:51Speaker 3: slipped to be Hudson Chandor. I want Tabor he slipped
- 3:54Speaker 3: to be Tabor. He slipped and he has a lot
- 3:55Speaker 3: of great qualities in his own right that is going
- 3:58Speaker 3: to be beneficial for our team. So we'll find somebody though,
- 4:02Speaker 3: that can play with Jake Richard and Joey Muldowney. That's
- 4:06Speaker 3: that's not one of my concerns this season.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You know, number nine did a pretty good Jeb filling
- 4:10Speaker 2: in for him last year, especially in the Hockey East tournament.
- 4:13Speaker 2: They have that and because of that mentality that you
- 4:15Speaker 2: have now, because you are so much quicker than you
- 4:18Speaker 2: were even a few years ago, the four check game
- 4:22Speaker 2: was part of the success.
- 4:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of reasons why you were so good
- 4:25Speaker 1: last year.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Power play obviously was big, but the way your team
- 4:28Speaker 2: four checked, and I'll use the bu game in the
- 4:31Speaker 2: Hockey E.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Semifinals as exhibit a of that though.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I think the last goal that Joey scored, or the
- 4:36Speaker 2: second goal that Joey scored, was just off great four
- 4:39Speaker 2: check with tats On along the boards. He gets it
- 4:42Speaker 2: to Jake Rashard, who's got that long long stick. I
- 4:45Speaker 2: don't know if people have ever really focused on that.
- 4:47Speaker 2: He's got a super long stick. He just waited out
- 4:50Speaker 2: your go off and there was Joey Muldowney open. But
- 4:52Speaker 2: the four check was so good last year.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think that's a staple of our team.
- 4:58Speaker 3: You know, when we're four checking, well, we're well and
- 5:01Speaker 3: you know we're a team that doesn't trap. We're pretty aggressive.
- 5:06Speaker 3: We're going to come after you. And when we are
- 5:09Speaker 3: playing really well, we're creating turnovers off the fore check.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Joey Muldowney is someone who talked to the assembled media
- 5:17Speaker 4: a week ago and he was asked about a twenty
- 5:22Speaker 4: nine goal, eighteen assist forty seven point season numbers that
- 5:26Speaker 4: are off the chart.
- 5:27Speaker 1: How do you get.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Somebody like him to improve without maybe necessarily worrying about
- 5:33Speaker 4: some numbers last year that you'd love for him to replicate.
- 5:36Speaker 4: But he could still be as good of a player
- 5:39Speaker 4: even if he's not maybe hitting all those marks.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, Joey and I have spoken about it and actually
- 5:49Speaker 3: holds true to a lot of our players. Just keep
- 5:52Speaker 3: becoming a better two hundred foot player. I don't I
- 5:56Speaker 3: mentioned it last week. I don't care if Joey gets
- 5:59Speaker 3: twenty nine thirty nine goals, nineteen goals. If he's playing
- 6:04Speaker 3: the right way and he's creating a lot more scoring chances,
- 6:09Speaker 3: then he's giving up when he's on the ice than
- 6:12Speaker 3: those are the things that we're concerned about. That to
- 6:15Speaker 3: me is more telling, because sometimes goal scoring is lucky,
- 6:19Speaker 3: like sometimes the puck goes in, you know, and you
- 6:23Speaker 3: make great shots and you hit a post, or you
- 6:25Speaker 3: make a great shot and it hits a stick. I
- 6:27Speaker 3: mean he had he hits a post against Penn Stadia
- 6:29Speaker 3: is another one that hits a defenseman stick that's going
- 6:31Speaker 3: in the net. So you know those didn't go in
- 6:34Speaker 3: for him. That doesn't mean he's not playing well. He's
- 6:38Speaker 3: creating great chances. So and Joey's not going to put
- 6:41Speaker 3: that type of pressure on himself, and I'm certainly not
- 6:43Speaker 3: going to put that pressure on him either.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Senior class, you got a lot of seniors and I
- 6:47Speaker 2: think of three of them are off the top of
- 6:49Speaker 2: my head, Jake Personval Tabor, Heath Slip and Tristan Fraser.
- 6:53Speaker 2: They have been through the wars. I like to call
- 6:56Speaker 2: him your foot soldiers is because of the way they play.
- 6:58Speaker 2: They grind, they get after it. They're good defensive four
- 7:01Speaker 2: as they play two hundred feet. So, well, what are
- 7:03Speaker 2: your expectations for them to take their next step in
- 7:05Speaker 2: their development for this year? Mae, because now now they're seniors.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I mean, everybody's a leader, as they said in the
- 7:10Speaker 2: press conference last week, But what would you like to
- 7:13Speaker 2: see from these guys now?
- 7:14Speaker 3: And you can add Houston Cartman to that list too,
- 7:16Speaker 3: because I think we're expecting him to, you know, add
- 7:20Speaker 3: value to our team as well. So I just think
- 7:23Speaker 3: that they have to continue again to play the right
- 7:26Speaker 3: way as long as our team is focused on winning
- 7:30Speaker 3: hockey games and not and I think that's where they
- 7:33Speaker 3: are now. They understand they've been through a freshman year
- 7:38Speaker 3: where it was a pretty good year, then a sophomore
- 7:40Speaker 3: year that was a little disappointing, and then a junior
- 7:43Speaker 3: year that was a really good year. I think they
- 7:45Speaker 3: understand we don't want to go back to a disappointing year.
- 7:50Speaker 3: So right now, I believe all they're focused on is
- 7:53Speaker 3: winning games, and they know what it takes to win games.
- 7:56Speaker 3: They know if we turn the puck over in the
- 7:58Speaker 3: neutral zone and give up odd man rush's, that's not
- 8:01Speaker 3: winning hockey. They know if we don't finish checks on
- 8:04Speaker 3: the for check, that's not winning hockey. They know if
- 8:07Speaker 3: we're out of position in the defensive zone and we're
- 8:10Speaker 3: giving up second and third chance opportunities, that's not winning hockey.
- 8:14Speaker 3: So I think it's incumbent on them to make sure
- 8:20Speaker 3: that the rest of the team and the younger guys,
- 8:22Speaker 3: the six seven younger guys that we have on our
- 8:24Speaker 3: team are new guys, that this is how we have
- 8:28Speaker 3: to play and this is what your expectations are.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Talk about the seniors, Well, last year you had Ethan Whitcomb,
- 8:35Speaker 4: Kayden Shahan, Ethan Gardula. Is the freshman line moving into
- 8:41Speaker 4: their sophomore years. What do you anticipate seeing out of
- 8:44Speaker 4: them in terms of growth?
- 8:46Speaker 3: I think more of I think they need to have
- 8:51Speaker 3: more of an impact on the game. I think last
- 8:54Speaker 3: year it was almost whatever they brought to the game
- 8:57Speaker 3: was a bonus. Now they're going to be lied on
- 9:01Speaker 3: because you can't count on Muldowney and Rashard's line every
- 9:05Speaker 3: night to carry the mail. There's gonna be some nights
- 9:09Speaker 3: that Wickcomb's line has to and they did that last year.
- 9:11Speaker 3: At times, there's gonna be some nights where Tattles line
- 9:14Speaker 3: might have to carry. You know. The thing that I
- 9:16Speaker 3: like about our team as I really believe we have
- 9:19Speaker 3: four balanced lines. When you watched the Stanley Cup playoffs
- 9:22Speaker 3: last year, I thought the biggest difference Florida's top end
- 9:27Speaker 3: players were not better than Edmonton's top end players. Mcdateavid
- 9:31Speaker 3: and dry Suttle might be the two best players in
- 9:33Speaker 3: the world, but when McDavid and dry Suttle have to
- 9:35Speaker 3: play twenty five to thirty minutes a night, for you
- 9:38Speaker 3: to be successful. And Kachuck only has to play twenty,
- 9:41Speaker 3: and Sam Bennett only has to play twenty, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: and Barkov only has to play twenty.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:47Speaker 3: They had four lines that just wore you down, and
- 9:51Speaker 3: that is something that we've tried to build. I don't
- 9:56Speaker 3: know who our first line is. I don't. Of course,
- 9:58Speaker 3: you have Joey and Ja and a lot of people
- 10:00Speaker 3: will say those are the top guys, but all right,
- 10:03Speaker 3: go concentrate on them. And Ethan Wickholm will beat you guys,
- 10:06Speaker 3: or maybe Ryan Taddles line are gonna beat you guys,
- 10:09Speaker 3: or you know Tabor, he's slipping his line's gonna beat you.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So that's what we want to create, is to have
- 10:18Speaker 3: a team that's just gonna wear you down. We might
- 10:20Speaker 3: not win the first period, we're not win the second period,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but it's eventually gonna wear you down.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I'm reminded of Paul Maurice. Start banging him. Now.
- 10:28Speaker 2: It's not for now, it's for game seven when they've
- 10:31Speaker 2: got nothing left right, ex exactly, all right, more with
- 10:34Speaker 2: cav we'll get into the fence and we'll also chat
- 10:36Speaker 2: about the newbies on this Husky team. When we continue
- 10:39Speaker 2: It's the Yukonachey Coaches Show live from Bear Smoke. How's
- 10:41Speaker 2: Barbecue on Learfield
