- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:30Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32tenth annual health IT, digital health, and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Shekhar Ramanathan, who
- 0:38is the executive director of digital transformation at
- 0:40Atlantic Health. Shaker, thanks for being here today.
- 0:43Let's have you start off by sharing a
- 0:45bit about yourself and your work in health
- 0:47care. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 0:48So I've been in the, health care technology
- 0:51space for close to twenty five years now.
- 0:54I'm in all kind of different aspects of
- 0:56it from
- 0:57kind of the consulting end to the vendor
- 1:00side. I used to work at Epic and
- 1:01then having to work for a number of
- 1:03health systems,
- 1:04in between, really kind of focused on,
- 1:07digital transformation,
- 1:09digital data, AI, and how all that kinda
- 1:12comes together to really
- 1:14transform clinical and business process.
- 1:17Wonderful.
- 1:17And let's start our conversation right there actually
- 1:20with AI because nearly half of medical practices
- 1:22reported using AI in some capacity in the
- 1:25last year. And, obviously, it does remain a
- 1:27key topic for health leaders. So from your
- 1:29perspective,
- 1:30what are the use cases that are making
- 1:31a difference right now, and how are you
- 1:33leveraging them in your organization?
- 1:35Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, the AI is pretty
- 1:37much everywhere that we go nowadays.
- 1:39We go through these conferences and pretty much
- 1:41every vendor is talking about how they're leveraging
- 1:44AI, what they're doing, and all those kind
- 1:46of things.
- 1:47Ultimately, it kinda comes down to where we
- 1:49really able to drive value.
- 1:51And I I think the biggest area, especially
- 1:54right now, is really around areas where we
- 1:56can really remove some of the administrative burden
- 1:59for,
- 2:00the the health system and especially for our
- 2:02providers.
- 2:04The things like Ambient Voice,
- 2:06you know, helping with things like
- 2:08prior authorization,
- 2:10contact center automation,
- 2:12all of those areas where there's really not
- 2:14a lot of,
- 2:15immediate value to the patient, to the provider,
- 2:18or to the health system.
- 2:20There's really no reason for us to not
- 2:22look at ways for us to be able
- 2:24to speed up that process, look at more
- 2:26efficient ways to do those things,
- 2:29and really
- 2:30be able to put more focus back on
- 2:32the patient and clinical care delivery.
- 2:34And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 2:37tools and remote monitoring to broader digital health
- 2:39platforms,
- 2:40introducing new technology does bring its own challenges.
- 2:43So what advice do you have for leaders
- 2:45navigating everything from governance to patient engagement? And
- 2:47can you share an example of how your
- 2:49organization has balanced innovation with operational constraint?
- 2:52Yeah. Absolutely. And I think right now, especially
- 2:55where dollars are getting much tighter,
- 2:58and health systems have to be a lot
- 3:00more focused
- 3:01on picking the right opportunities
- 3:04and right areas to focus on.
- 3:06I think governance is incredibly important to being
- 3:09able to understand
- 3:10where are your largest value areas,
- 3:14and really focusing
- 3:16on outcomes and then kinda working backwards from
- 3:18there. What is it that you really wanna
- 3:20achieve? How are you gonna go about doing
- 3:22that? And then picking the technologies and solutions
- 3:25that are really gonna support that. And oftentimes,
- 3:29in the
- 3:30time of, like, financial constraints and operational constraints
- 3:33is usually when we actually see some of
- 3:35the best innovation.
- 3:36You know, we saw a lot of that
- 3:38during COVID. We saw everyone kind of focusing
- 3:41on the same problem,
- 3:42which allows for a greater level of innovation,
- 3:46and a really a greater opportunity for transformation.
- 3:50And shifting gears slightly, how are you seeing
- 3:53recent legislation, both state and federal, affect health
- 3:55care organizations and health care IT specifically, and
- 3:58have you adjusted strategies in response?
- 4:01I I don't think we have an option
- 4:02not to.
- 4:04I I especially right now, I mean, with
- 4:06the current government shutdown
- 4:09and the impact on things like telehealth reimbursement,
- 4:12We really have to then be able to
- 4:14shift and pivot and understand, you know, kind
- 4:17of short term strategies as well as long
- 4:19term strategies of are those type of things
- 4:22going to change.
- 4:23It's important that, we're always staying abreast of
- 4:27what is happening
- 4:28and then having contingency plans
- 4:31that allow us to
- 4:33quickly adopt and being able to stay,
- 4:36focused on clinical care.
- 4:39You know, what we constantly talked about organizationally
- 4:41is the idea of the fact that, no,
- 4:43we're not in the business of making the
- 4:44laws, but we are responsible for following them.
- 4:47So it's important that we're designing plans
- 4:49that, allow us to
- 4:51operate at a high level regardless of what
- 4:54happens.
- 4:55And as we wrap up our conversation, I'd
- 4:57love to know your top needs of advice
- 4:59for health care leaders as they prepare for
- 5:01further advancements in technology and rising demands for
- 5:03care.
- 5:04Yeah. So, I'm gonna be a little bit
- 5:06biased. I'm gonna say data is kinda where
- 5:09you wanna kinda really start. I think it's
- 5:11really important that you're in a position to
- 5:14understand what are those,
- 5:17major value drivers, and how do you understand,
- 5:21where your opportunities
- 5:22are, and,
- 5:24ultimately,
- 5:25how do you weed out the
- 5:27just the good opportunities so you really have
- 5:30the opportune so you have the the time
- 5:32and,
- 5:33ability to really focus on the great ones.
- 5:36And organizations
- 5:37often get caught up in too many things.
- 5:40So being able to be really data driven,
- 5:43understand what's gonna impact your organization,
- 5:48the most is it should be a priority.
- 5:51Wonderful. Well, Shaker, thanks so much for joining
- 5:54me today on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast. Again,
- 5:56we are recording live at the tenth annual
- 5:58Health IT Digital Health and RCM conference.
- 6:01Thank you.
