- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and with me is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone. I'm still thinking about all those spices from last episode. Lucas: Right, we learned how to say 'I want spices' — saya mahu rempah. Let's say that together. Luna: Saya mahu rempah. Lucas: Perfect. Now, at the spice stall, you might want to ask if the spice is spicy. In Malay, 'Is this spicy?' is Rempah ini pedas? Luna: Rempah ini pedas? Lucas: Yeah, you got it. Pedas means spicy. So if a seller offers you some spice, you can ask that. Luna: That's super useful. So I could point at a pile and say Rempah ini pedas? Lucas: Exactly. Now let's look at a few specific spices. First, turmeric. In Malay, turmeric is kunyit. Luna: Kunyit. Lucas: Good. To say 'I want turmeric', it's Saya mahu kunyit. Luna: Saya mahu kunyit. Lucas: Nice. Next, curry powder — serbuk kari. So 'I want curry powder' is Saya mahu serbuk kari. Luna: Saya mahu serbuk kari. Lucas: And a little bit of black pepper — sedikit lada hitam. Lada hitam is black pepper. So 'I want a little black pepper' is Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Luna: Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Wow, that's a mouthful. Lucas: Take it slow. Saya mahu — I want. Sedikit — a little. Lada hitam — black pepper. Luna: Okay. Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Lucas: That's it. Now let's imagine a scene. You're at a market stall with lots of spices. Luna: Okay, I'm there. Lucas: You see some red powder. You ask: Rempah ini pedas? Luna: Rempah ini pedas? The seller says yes, very spicy. Lucas: Then you say: Saya mahu kunyit dan serbuk kari. Luna: Saya mahu kunyit dan serbuk kari. Lucas: And then: Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Luna: Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. I think I've got it. Lucas: You're doing great. Let's do a quick review. First, 'I want spices'. Luna: Saya mahu rempah. Lucas: 'Is this spicy?' Luna: Rempah ini pedas? Lucas: 'I want turmeric.' Luna: Saya mahu kunyit. Lucas: 'I want curry powder.' Luna: Saya mahu serbuk kari. Lucas: And 'I want a little black pepper.' Luna: Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Lucas: Awesome. You know, it's amazing how these little phrases can help you when you're out shopping. Luna: Totally. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, consider supporting the show. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going. Lucas: Yeah, it really makes a difference. Head over to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Now, back to spices. Let's say you want half a kilo of turmeric. How would you say that? Lucas: Great question. You'd say: Saya mahu setengah kilo kunyit. Setengah kilo — half a kilo. Luna: Saya mahu setengah kilo kunyit. Lucas: And if the seller asks Berapa? you can say Setengah kilo. Luna: Setengah kilo. Got it. Lucas: Let's try another one. How do you ask for a kilo of curry powder? Luna: Saya mahu satu kilo serbuk kari. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want just a little black pepper, you already know — Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Luna: So I can mix and match these. Saya mahu setengah kilo kunyit dan sedikit lada hitam. Lucas: Perfect. You're ready for the market. Let's do a quick full scene. I'll be the seller. You come up to my stall. Luna: Okay. Selamat pagi. Lucas: Selamat pagi. Nak apa? Luna: Saya mahu rempah. Rempah ini pedas? Lucas: Ya, ini pedas. Nak apa lagi? Luna: Saya mahu setengah kilo kunyit dan sedikit lada hitam. Lucas: Baik. RM10 semuanya. Luna: Okay. Terima kasih. Lucas: That was excellent. You just bought spices at a market in Malay. Luna: It felt natural. I love how these phrases build on each other. Lucas: That's the idea. Keep practicing these and you'll be a pro at the market. Thanks for joining us on Fexingo. See you next time. Luna: Selamat tinggal.
